Tech Note: A Comment Markup Plugin

Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 3:20:27 pm PDT

In our comment entry form, I’m trying out a new way of inserting the HTML tags for bold, italics, etc., based on a very nice plugin for the jQuery Javascript library titled markItUp. This plugin has several improvements over the code I was using, and is more cross-browser compatible, so why reinvent the wheel? It was easy to customize the settings and install (the actual code to activate it is one short line), and seems to have no conflicts with anything else I’m currently using.

The only visible change (for now) is that the row of formatting icons shows up on the top left of the comment entry box, instead of the top right. But this little plugin has some nice extended capabilities I plan to explore.

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

Cross-browser compatible... kinky!

Charles, new report up from the convention. An "investigative" piece this time around!

Wow, the comment box is bigger. Nice!

I'll be the FIRST to confess, I have no idea what any of that means.

I can't find my icons! heh,heh

6 Noam Sayin'  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 3:23:40pm

So long as the tab key lets me exit the box, I'm fine with this.

7 Dr. Shalit  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 3:24:08pm

Charles -

Noticed the difference. Using FF 3, I used the Bold Button. No "ok" box. Just have to remember to treat it like WORD or OO Write and turn off the re formatting when done.

Oh, hey, Charles can we have an update on iPhone/Ajax fixes? I noticed the "Jump to Bottom" link -- very handy for the iPhone! Everything else seems to be working dandy, too. Nice work. I'm hittin' the jar.

Sweet. From the Stevenson story?

Yep.

One of my all-time favorites.

Of course, since it was written by a Dead White Male®, it is no longer considered literature.

25 Charles  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 3:31:15pm

I tested it on IE6 and IE7, Firefox 3 and Safari 3, works fine on all of them, although IE insists on making you confirm that you want to allow a 'scripted window'.

Zombie, the whole DWEM "critique" never made much impression on me, other than its willful stupidity. We were taught as far back as grade school that it's never right to build yourself up by tearing others down. The arguments for expanding the canon of literature are persuasively made on so many other grounds.

Yes. It is because Gov. Palins child is special needs they thought it might be looked at as making fun of him so the diarist changed it.

Glad to know LGF stays at the technical cutting edge.
Could we get an underline function?

44 Killian Bundy  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 3:46:26pm

Oh boy, one of the local lawyer listserves I subscribe to just exploded about the preemptive RNC police raids yesterday. Oh the LLL hand wringing over the brutal Gestapo tactics of the evil police violating the poor, peaceful protesters civil rights!

So I just asked them about the buckets of urine that were confiscated. This ought to be fun.

That's actually somewhat sane. Oh wow, there are pigs falling from the sky. I gotta go fire up the grill and get some BBQ sauce.

re: #39 Typicalwhitey

Sorry, I was upstairs for a second. To make them superscripts, you put sup and /sup in triangle brackets; for subscripts, it's sub and /sub. (Combining the two can do some fun stuff.)

47 pimp_conservative  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 3:53:37pm

An AWESOME comment feature would be the ability for registered used to block out or ignore other uses so that their comments are disappeared. Gosh that would be awesome, more so on other blogs, but occasionally here as well.

Charles

I have been getting errors from Firefox 2 about unresponsive scripts; I wonder if this change is the cause. (It seems to be LGF that causes the problem)
Note that I usually keep one tab open to the main page, and one open to each article I'm reading, if this helps.

I'll be away for an hour or 3 after posting this, but I wanted to let you know early.

This thread may be dead but I hope Charles checks back down here. I notice in the comment entery form that the text is no longer my default text size. My vision is very poor so I need to set my text to 200 % to read. I was hoping you could make it so the text in the comment form is default size. Please excuse any typos I'm proofreading this with my nose pressed to my computer screen.
