Incidentally, there’s a balanced position that all of America’s presidential candidates could take on the controversial abortion issue. If they want votes they shouldn’t campaign to make abortion illegal or legal. They should campaign to make it retroactive. If a kid reaches 25 and he or she is still jobless, feckless, and sitting around Starbucks acting like a — no offense — European, then whack.

Repost from the prior thread:

While I was having dinner tonight, it occurred to me that the RNC should do a spot on Obama's home turf of Chicagoland, and do an expose on precisely how things have become better under his political leadership.

I don't live there, nor have I ever strayed away from the downtown Loop when I was there, but I am thinking that the place must be a dump, despite the millions of dollars that he has funneled through there. We must ask ourselves, if this is the outcome of Mr. Obama's governance, do we really want his to do his magic on the whole nation.

Am I on to something here?

9 arrested at Xcel in antiwar march

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Police in riot gear arrested two women in their 70s and seven others taking part in an antiwar march at the Republican National Convention on Sunday after they crossed a security fence into a restricted area near Xcel Energy Center.

The nine were arrested for trespassing, said Doug Holtz, a St. Paul police commander. All but one, who did not have identification, were released by police shortly after their arrest.

They even arrested a 78 year old nun. Those bastards!

They deliberately tried to go into a restricted area, and were given a ticket.

Do many lizards train in gyms or outside by cycling like Charles, running etc.? I was wondering whether exercise-oriented threads might work here.

I get more than enough exercise jumping to conclusions, running down their friends, side-stepping responsibility, and pushing their luck!

I'm allergic to exercise, my heart races, it gets hard to breath, I get flushed and sweat.

Occasionally I get the urge to exercise, but I sit down till it passes.

51 Irene NYC  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 9:45:50pm

Met some professional people I knew while out walking today with my mom, hadn't seen them in years. Mentioned having just arrived from New York and the husband says to me, "Giuliani was such a fascist." I looked at him and politely responded, "Let's not abuse terms like fascist, which Giuliani clearly was not." He kinda took it in stride but seemed a bit bummed out that I hadn't let him get away with what was clearly something he said at the drop of a hat. Walking with his wife, I asked what the problem was with Giuliani. She replied, "He arrested minorities and didn't arrest whites." Okay, I thought to myself, I can see where this is going so I dropped politics as a subject and asked about their daughter, thinking that would be a safe subject, only to be informed that she is teaching at a private school in a city and that her kids are extremely well behaved because they are mostly from liberal families.

I am really, really tired of all this liberal presumptuousness. I wish they could hear themselves speak. They think they are the cat's meow, and instead they just sound and act like a couple of jerks.

It's difficult to find a qualifed teacher. Park District group mat classes dont' work if you haven't had previous training. It is REALLY hard. Hubby griped at first at the cost, but I gone as far as I could with Physical Therapy and I didn't want to do injections. 18 months later, I can honestly tell you that if you pay the money and stick with it, you will live free of back pain. Hubby doesn't gripe anymore because he doesn't hear me griping about my back and he likes that.

google for teachers from the NY studio, you might find one within driving distance for you.

The people who didn't like Nagin were more likely to re-establish their lives away from NOLA after the Katrina evacuation.

Work out every lunch hour at my day job: stretching; stationary bike; elliptical trainer (15 min at high resistance & speed); free weights; and some closing stretches. The whole thing takes 35 minutes, not counting the time in the locker room.

Also do long walks and the occasional 10K.

For a long time, I would go to the gym and ride the recumbant (sp?) bike (suppossed better for the knees) and put the ear phones on and listen to a book-on-tape (now Ipod). It was the best hour of my day and the only way I could get thru a book without interruptions.

Four kids? How do you manage? Before I had any kids, I wanted five. After having a kid, I decided three was the number. Then I had my second kid, and I think that might just do it.

Just curious: Does anyone here know anything about the TED conferences?

I've seen a couple of the lectures online, and they seem brilliant. Almost too good to be true. Is there something weird and shady behind the whole thing, or is it just a genuine effort to expand modern discourse?

They've featured Al Gore and Bill Clinton. Just looking at the list of speakers, it seems they're genuinely interested in expanding liberal discourse.

Work out every lunch hour at my day job: stretching; stationary bike; elliptical trainer (15 min at high resistance & speed); free weights; and some closing stretches. The whole thing takes 35 minutes, not counting the time in the locker room.

Also do long walks and the occasional 10K.

You have a gym at work? I was in that situation for a couple years, and it's wonderful. My new toy is high intensity interval training---you can lose weight and improve VO2Max with only 10 minutes or so per day of actually running, because it's all in sprints at 80-100% of maximum heart rate. Works great, but there's cumulative fatigue from day to day....

I'm just completely baffled. I thought maybe someone could explain it to me?

133 lifeofthemind  Sun, Aug 31, 2008 10:05:57pm

The great paradox of Conservatism is that conservative theory says that the powers of the central government should be reduced and local communities should be free to solve their own problems. In an ideal world a marketplace of policy would evolve and vibrant local and community governments would act on behalf of people who can closely observe them. The reality is painfully different. Horrible and bloodsucking as the Federal bureaucracy is, it still can demonstrate remarkable competence and hires some people who adhere to professional standards. Local and state governments are by contrast complete disasters and awash in corruption. More important than that is the fact that people have no control over their state and local governments. Voting rates for non-national elections are a fraction of the already low percentage that vote for Congress. Therefor Republicans are in the peculiar position of advocating the shifting of real power and tax authority to bodies like local school boards that are usually controlled by a small faction of cranks. Those special interest groups that seize control of local elected and administrative bodies use them as sources of patronage and plunder while pushing policies that are anathema to conservatives. If anybody has a bright idea as to how to get Federalism working again please share it with me.

You can do high-intensity interval training in a pool, it's not limited to any specific activity. If you get your pulse up to 80%+ of maximum for a minute or a minute and a half, half a dozen times or so per day, you'll lose weight.

Checking out! Good night.

"I, in my own mind, have always thought of America as a place in the divine scheme of things that was set aside as a promised land. It was set here and the price of admission was very simple: the means of selection was very simple as to how this land should be populated. Any place in the world and any person from those places; any person with the courage, with the desire to tear up their roots, to strive for freedom, to attempt and dare to live in a strange and foreign place, to travel halfway across the world was welcome here."

Well, apparently in other quarters here I've got a reputation for never letting an argument go. So if I 'disappeared' during some back-and-forth with you -- which to be honest I can't remember -- then consider it a blessing.

Sage, Sage, Sage. In the article, Wyatt states that
"Staff from the Sultanah Aminah hospital had to drain some blood from the penis and cut away a top layer of skin before the object could be removed, the newspaper said."
Now I would say that that indicated a degree of severity of pain, that he couldn't, ah, deflate himself, ya know?
What I don't know is how the hell they managed to drain some of the blood from the penis - I mean, woudn't the blood just rush back in?
Wonder if maybe they weren't laughing so hard (pun intended) that they didn't think to use some sort of, ah, oil or other lubricant to loosen the nut!

Nice, open thread.... I have been voting since I was 18 and that was a long time ago. I have never seen the level of the vile crap that has been running out of the left as it has for the past 48 hours. Let see, they pull out a desperate housewives story along the lines that Gov. Palin has faked the birth of her daughter because it really is her teenage daughters child. Then they really go ape shit and accuse Gov. Palin of parental neglect that resulted in her ( remember, this is the daughters child) newborn being born with Downs. Now, the greatest snake ass licker in the biz (Alan Combs) is now "doing the math" in relation to her and Todd's elopement and the birth of the oldest son.

I hope that the good Governor address these issues by name during her convention speech, better yet, let Mr. Palein address them when he introduces his wife. Me personally, I would just walk up to the Fox studios and beat that snake ass licker to a cleanable stain on the carpet.

I had a weather book when I was in Boy Scouts back in coastal NC that had this little graphic that explained how the wind strength varies in the different quadrants of a hurricane. IIRC it detached from the book and was semi-transparent so you could place it over a map and see what area was going to be hardest hit. Wish I still had it but I don't need it here in AZ.

Actually you're right - since the hurricanes rotate counter-clockwise, those places to the east will get the storm surge and they think they will be 10 to 15 feet this time. By contrast, they were 30 feet with Katrina, that's why Mississippi got belted so badly. But the storm surges and flooding will be the worst on the east side of the storm.

I think I may be sort of doing that already. I like to see how far I can swim under water. I can usually make it about 1/2 way across the pool (a 50 yarder) before I have to surface but today I made it 3/4 of the way.

It does sound like you've got a high-intensity interval system going there. You feel it for a day or so, but it whips you into shape fast. When I do it very intensely on the treadmill it actually does remind me of swimming under water.

You don't know that. He shoved her - big deal. She was given a lawful order to step back and she didn't. Only thing I'll concede is that she may have been hurt. That happens sometimes when you don't follow lawful commands by police officers.

That's crap. Anyone who watches the video can see that.

Why is it crap? He said "step back" - she didn't. He did not swing his club. He had the club in both hands and used it to push her - hard - and she fell. If you prove me wrong I will acknowledge. I'm not one of these internet posters who sticks to failed positions. But don't just say "it's crap". We saw the same video.
Believe it or not, police can't do just anything they like, even to the likes of a leftist.

Police follow an escalation of force, a common-sense scale. And going from a polite "step back" to smashing a woman full-force and adding "BITCH!" seems to indicate something less than common sense.

I won't waste more time with you, on this. People can watch and decide for themselves.

You were much nastier with me for daring to point out how wrong you were.

More concern is about flooding than wind damage to NOLA. Here is the NOAA website that has the sea height projections and real time sea data (you have to use the menu to the right - takes some fiddling to get what you want, etc.)

Currently highest sea is 28.5 ft above norm... this is to the north of the storm, about 65 miles south of Mobile or so. While this is pretty high, it is nowhere near as high as the worst Katrina waves, which decimated the MS coastline.

Hey, Rev. Wright is on a comeback tour.

From the article:

After the 10:30 service, a worshiper said Wright's message was powerful and persuasive.

"It was beautiful. He preached the word of God straight from the Bible," she said. Church representatives interrupted the interview before the woman could give her name.

Nice freedom of speech you've got there, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. Can't have anyone knowing what was actually said, can we now?

And can I suggest the very strange thought that this may be a blessing to the Republican Convention? (So maybe God is on our side instead? )

Follow me here.

With the bias in the 'dead tree' MSM ( and the sanity of the Republican party, given that neither McCain nor Palin think they are Caeser Augustus ) there is no way that the Republican convention would get 'good press'.

All that it would be is a chance for the MSM to spin speeches *against* the Republicans and *invent* party weakness to the matching degree that they spun speeches *for* the Obamessiah and *ignored* a degree of party chaos that exceeds anything in my memory. (And I supported Regan against Nixon - so I can remember some *nasty* fights! LOL)

By focusing on actual events ( rather than creating a divine god-king) and moving the main Republican speeches to smaller venues more locally focused this may actually improve the Republican's chance of getting their message out unfiltered.

Not saying I'm right here - but it's a thought.

Speaking of the quote by P.J. O'Rourke(who wrote the brilliant Holidays In Hell) , can there be anything more radical than a VP candidate who keeps a Down Syndrome baby instead of aborting it and a P candidate who actively votes against the Partial Birth Abortion ban, votes against the Born Alive Act and has stated that he doesn't want his daughters to be "punished" with a baby. And this is what my Liberal Lemming Jewish(If Obama gets most of the Jewish vote this time, I, a Jew, will feel angry) aunt thinks of as being "compassionate" and "sensitive" and "feminist".

That is what Jesse Jackson should've been outraged at Obama about. Oh yeah, he changed his position from Abortion being black genocide to being Pro-Choice, how convenient.

re: #133 lifeofthemind

I guess I'm not buying your premise that the Federal govt is so much better. Just look at this election, for example. There's a real chance that a guy with almost no experience, and a tainted past, could get elected to the highest office, and the woman with less than two years as governor of a small state (population-wise) has the most executive experience on either ticket.

122. What many here don’t understand. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. RUMOR IS TRUTH.

The modern laws of media hype and political warfare have a useful tenet:

Repeat ANYTHING or raise false concern over ANYTHING and it is likely to be planted in the conscious/subconscious of many voters.

If people start to think that there might be something fishy with Palin’s last kid (if hers), then that’s FINE. One more doubt (whether tied to reality or not) is another hesitation at the ballot box.

GET WITH THE PROGRAM PEOPLE. The “rising above it” bullshit has served us so well in the past, hasn’t it?

If you have problems with the story, then STFU and get out of the way of Dems who are engaged in MODERN POLITICAL WARFARE. Go tend your garden or some other pedestrian task, because the “concern trolls” are not helping shape the message.

It was only after he left that it clicked - he had Down Syndrome.

I've never met a person with Down that was less than sweet - and I do mean sweet - whether child, man, or woman. They bring joy to the world in a unique way.

.045 cutoff wheel and plenty of coolant?

Actually, there is a tool called, curiously enough, a nut-splitter. Nothing more than a screw-driven wedge, provided with an anvil to support the nut. Normally used to remove nuts that are rusted onto the stud or bolt to which they were mated. I own a couple of them, and they do come in handy sometimes.

Now, a nut-splitter might just flatten a nut which was on a less-than-steel-hard object, which might smart a bit, under the circumstances. Maybe a couple of hits of Viagra might help.

re: #133 lifeofthemind

The great paradox of Conservatism is that conservative theory says that the powers of the central government should be reduced and local communities should be free to solve their own problems.
.....
If anybody has a bright idea as to how to get Federalism working again please share it with me.

Good question there. I won't claim to have all the answers, but I do think you need to reframe the premises of the question to make it more effective.

1) "Small government" (non-federal) isn't a total disaster; there are quite successful examples once you look beyond the big Chicago-type political machines.

2) People are people everywhere, so imho you'll find the same percentage of competent people in local government as you will in federal service (assuming equal pay, of course). And it's much easier to talk with them if they're 10 miles away instead of 3000. (Unless they've gone to a voicemail system, grrrr. ;-))

3) Most places elect their local pols on the same date as federal elections; the turnout problem is only usually a problem when, like here in Washington state, a tax levy (schools, say) has failed in a general election and supporters are trying for another bite at the apple by re-running a special election.

The big thing in favor of local government/conservativism as I see it is the "house odds". In a casino, for most any game you play, the house takes 5% off the top. If you want to have the feds providing local services, it'll cost you a huge house "take" to play the federal game. That extra layer of bureaucracy isn't free (US Dept of Education educates how many kids?). How much of our taxpayer dollar is actually going to come back to the doctors and nurses at our local hospital if Hillary gets her single-payer federal healthcare bureaucracy up and running?

I don't know that governments have ever been truly efficient, but there's a good case to be made that you get a lot more bang for your buck when you can keep local control of services without paying 20-50% more to a federal department. (Some govt services like Defense, of course, belong in the federal level.... like, heh -- "Saddam, your JDAM delivery will be Tuesday between 2 and 4pm, please be home to accept the parcel".)

The big thing imho is that to make local control work, we simply need to do more of it. And maybe get some competitiveness going .... charter schools, privatizing some government services, etc .... so that the good ole boy networks aren't the only game in town any more. It can be done. It won't be perfect but it'll work better than whatever fever dreams the KOS kids and the big-government creatures have planned for us.

Synchronicity time.

This afternoon, I ordered a pizza. The delivery guy was very precise, polite, and personable. He was much more helpful and nice than the norm - most pizza guys are polite, but in a hurry and sort of harried.

It was only after he left that it clicked - he had Down Syndrome.

I've never met a person with Down that was less than sweet - and I do mean sweet - whether child, man, or woman. They bring joy to the world in a unique way.

I realized I should post this when I read a similar story on National Review from Rich Lowery - a recent experience he had on an airplane.

Beautiful story.
"God bless Sarah Palin for bringing Trig into the world, and may he shower those around him with as much sunshine as the gentleman I met on that flight."
God bless, indeed. In my estimation, He already has blessed them by entrusting them with Trig. I have known a handful of Down's children. They are clearly nothing short of angels, perhaps even God's emissaries, if we would but listen, observe and learn from them!

i have been watching cnn and the weather channel for over 12 hours. maybe this type of reporting sells cars or something. but good grief. i was just standing out in my back yard and it wasn't the wind and rain that ran me back in doors. it was the lousiana state bird, the mosquito, that ran me off. i know it' coming, and i am still very happy to be bored. up to now, take all the reporting that you have seen with a small grain of salt.

it is gonna get scary but it hasn't happened yet.

But how'd that end up at images[dot]huffingtonpost[dot]com?!?!?!?!?!

re: #349 pink freud

Lafayette here, Cognito ...directly in the path of the eye.

Not even a whisper of wind outside, no frogs chirping .....nothing. Deathly still.

Full force hurricane winds expected in 24 hours.

Take care, there Pink Freud.

And I agree with Pat. That's the best nickname ever.
