Biden to Israel: Get Used to Iranian Nukes - Update: Biden Denies

Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 8:19:56 am PDT

Israel’s Army Radio is reporting that Obama’s running mate Joe Biden told Israeli officials they would have to learn to stop worrying, and love the Iranian bomb.

Security officials expressed concern Monday over statements reportedly made by US Democratic vice presidential candidate Joseph Biden regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

Army Radio reported that the Delaware senator was heard saying in closed conversations with Jerusalem officials three years ago that he was firmly opposed to an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reportedly claimed that Israel would likely have to come to terms with a nuclear Iran. He reportedly expressed doubt over the effectiveness of economic sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic and said he was against the opening of an additional military and diplomatic front, saying that the US had more pressing problems, such as North Korea and Iraq.

Change!

UPDATE at 9/1/08 12:14:36 pm:

Biden spokesperson David Wade says this report is false.

Biden spox David Wade said the unsourced report is simply false.

“This is a lie peddled by partisan opponents of Senators Obama and Biden,” said Wade, “and we will not tolerate anyone questioning Senator Biden’s 35-year record of standing up for the security of Israel. Joe Biden’s first trip as a Senator was to Israel, he has worked with every Israeli leader from Golda Meir to Prime Minister Olmert, and he takes a back seat to no one when it comes to protecting the relationship between Israel and the US.”

I do not find this surprising at all, particularly in light of reports I read last week claiming that Zbigniew_Brzezinski had given an interview to the Russians telling them to simply ignore anything the US said about the Georgian situation. . . . I'll see if I can find it.

If it's not on tape and vouched for by credible witnesses, it's not much of a story. How is the public to distinguish this report from any random product of the rumor mill?

Biden has spent most of his career as a minority member of Senate Foreign Relations. His job has been to bluster and strut and fume and try to make the tiniest of incremental changes on policy. And mostly to be a loser. The loser mentality is strong in this one.

Biden is a Rove plant?

38 Luigi  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 8:31:13am

Frankly, it's hard to tell the true meaning of this, if the report is true at all. He may be spearheading a Democratic effort to encourage Israel and America to 'take care' of Iran before he and Obama are saddled with the problem. Or, it may be he is acting in the national interest by throwing shadows and casting confusion before a military action. Or, he may know for a fact that the action will come soon and he is pre-emptively deflecting away from the Democratic party any criticism of the action that can come from their buddies in the Muslim world.

I'm not sure this Dutch development has been covered here, but it adds to the expectation of an attack soon...

[Link: www.telegraph.co.uk...]

The Dutch intelligence service has pulled an agent out of an "ultra-secret operation" spying on Iran's military industry because spymasters in Netherlands believe a United States air attack was imminent.

I'm not going to link all the stories, long time lizards have seen them all.

Iran is working on a nuke, El Baridei has said it would be by the end of '08 or early '09.

Dinnerjacket and various members of the Mad Mullah Mob have repeatedly threatened the destruction of Israel.

Iran has been working up grading their missiles to satellite launch capability. Satellite launch if they can launch ICBMS. Accuracy is another issue but not needed, read on.

Iran has also be working on surface sea launch in the Caspian Sea.

Putting all the piece together the scenario I see coming down the pipe:
Iran launches a two prong assault, the main attack is against Tel Aviv and depending on number of war heads other targets in Israel. The other is out of the Cold War book (called depressed trajectory, it gives NORAD less than 5 minute warning), a ship in international waters off the CONUS launches, this warhead is detonated at 300nm in altitude over Kentucky. The produce a EMP which would zorch every electronic device on the East Coast. Effectively paralyzing the US.

Because there are no direct causalities in such an attack, there will be pressure on the US internally and externally not to respond.

The thinking in Iran is such a thing will prevent a US response. The problem is critical government and military hardware is hardened against EMP,

That's worst case, put there are a lot of pieces point to something like that.

Biden is worst than a fool. Such imbecilic statements encourage regimes like Iran.

60 1AmeriCAN  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 8:44:08am

Biden is priceless just like BO.

Hopefully if this is true, it makes the headlines and people start realizing that these people will be weak and ineffective leaders that won't even deliver on the few things they actually do spell out.

That's all true, hence my worst case disclaimer. My point is Iran is up to something. Something very much in the not good column.

Biden's talk not a contrary view, it is DANGEROUS. Such talk is view in place like Tehran, Damacus, Pyongyang, and caves of Afghanistan as weakness. The unwillingness and inability to fight.

Such talk INVITES more attacks. It encourages Iran in what ever plans they have because it signals we WILL DO NOTHING!

Biden's statement is one the most reckless, dangerous, utterly incompetent things to say in such a situation.

We have to be prepared for what Iran could do if everything goes right for them. Biden has signaled surrender.

89 eon  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 9:38:38am

As David Weber and John Ringo might put it, in foreign affairs Biden is a "creature of the deal". He believes that if we find out what an enemy wants and simply give it to them, without preconditions, they will cease to be an enemy, or at least go away and stop bothering us. Sacrificing allies is just part of the "deal", as far as he's concerned; as has been said of the Clintons, "progressives" like Biden do not have friends, they have meaningful relationships with associates who can be abandoned at need. (Theirs.)

Where his theory fails is when dealing with an enemy whose "wants" include a world in which they rule, and we don't exist.

I suspect that Joe would wake up to the reality about the time we lost an American city or two to an Iranian-built, terrorist-delivered WMD of the fission type. At which point, we are right back to Wretchard's 3 Conjectures.

And even then, he would be on the phone to Ahmadinejad, or Assad Jr., or somebody, saying "what do you want?"

(At which point, they say; "A world in which America does not exist. Thank You for making it possible." And hang up.)

Far from having "foresight", Biden is incapable of hearing the train when it's two feet from him.

That's what makes him a perfect match for Obama. Rather like Ambrose Bierce's famously scurrilous definition of love, theirs is a partnership in which each of them senses dominance due to the other's stupidity.

cheers

eon

Biden wants to make the mistake we made in letting Hitler build up his war making abilities.

Moron.

And how ironic this has come on the 69th anniversary of the start of World War II. And this war and everything that came with it - 60 million deaths, the Holocaust etc, happened because the West had too many weak politicians in positions of power during the all-important 1933-38 era - politicians just like Biden who deliberately turned a Nelsonian blind eye to German rearmament and the contents of Mein Kampf, and took absolutely no notice of the inflammatory antisemitism and the promises of conquest in Hitler's speeches. The politicians of then knew what was being planned and chose to do nothing. It is obvious that if If Churchill knew what Hitler was up to, then so did the rest of the world leaders. But antiwar politicians chose to try to blacken Churchills name by denigrating him as a warmonger, in the forlorn belief that this, and giving in to Hitler at every opportunity was the way to avoid war. Instead, all these fools did was ensure that when war came, it would be far bloodier than striking pre-emptively in 1935 or 1936, when Hitler could have been toppled at far less cost. But the more you look at the world of 70 or so years ago, the more familiar it seems to get with every passing day. Many of the dynamics of the 1930s are at work today. We have spineless politicians and populations who want to do nothing about Iran. Like Hitler, Ahmadinejad and the mad mullahs are planning the mass murder of Jews, and like the Chamberlains, Baldwins, Daladiers etc, a deaf ear is being turned.

And yet it is being reported the Dutch Intelligence Service is curtailing a sneak and smash mission against the Iranian centrifuges because of a soon to happen US attack.

Dutch Infiltrators! The mullahs will be uneasy from now on, listening for the clatter of clogs on the pavement behind them.

Well then, there will likely be a strike between Nov 4 and Jan 20, by Israel, alone if necessary. What choice do they have?

Here is Joe Biden's recent statement........Nov 29, 2007 ... Joe Biden stated unequivocally that he will move to impeach President Bush if he bombs Iran without first gaining congressional approval. ...January 12th Iranian PT boats harass US ships in Straights of Hormuz.......Atta boy Joe!

I was concerned there for a moment. Age, I presume. So all Joe has to do, if he is VP, is to convince Barack that Israel should not do something illogical, like try to stop Iran or any other regime that has Israels grave marker in mind as a historical note? Wow... I feel so much better. Wait, my left arm is numb....

More and more countries are trying to obtain nukes as a talisman which they believe would disburden them from solving their problems.

The number one foreign policy nerd of the other party is trying to taboo any serious debate over the most acute case of this problem.

Europeans trying to disarm themselves from nuclear sharing deals to work out a consistent stance against the nuclear superstition will increasingly experience the foreign policy of the other party as a problem.
