Hurricane Gustav Hits Louisiana

Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 9:55:20 am PDT

Hurricane Gustav has reached Louisiana, but it’s decreased in intensity to a Cat 2 storm and so far the levees are holding. There’s going to be major damage, but it’s beginning to look like it may not be quite the monster everyone was fearing. Here’s the latest infrared satellite imagery from the NOAA:

So, maybe God heard the Democrat's prayers and this is his way of saying STFU?

4 lawhawk  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 9:59:06am

The main concern now, as it was during Katrina is whether the levees will hold. There's serious concerns about that. No one thought that the levees would fail during Katrina, and the storm had pretty much passed NOLA by when the levees did indeed begin failing on a massive scale.

It may be too soon to call NOLA safe, but they've dodged the first of several bullets Gustav had.

5 pat  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 9:59:13am

Lets see. We could build a city under water in a Hurricane zone and then fill it with welfare recipients and see what happens, Yup, That sounds like a good idea.

Here's a pretty thorough CNN report: Water clears levees as Gustav makes landfall.

9 Fenway_Nation  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 10:02:05am

Chances are it will miss New Orleans and the MSM will rejoice that only 'less significant' cities like Lafayette, Biloxi, Baton Rouge, Mobile or Pensacola are directly threatened.

Go to Tools->Internet Options->Security tab, click the 'Trusted Sites' icon, then the 'Sites' button, and add LGF to the list of sites. You may need to uncheck 'Require server verification.'

I thought the whole Russo/Georgia conflict would drive the cost of oil up given how jumpy the market is. There was a brief spike as Russia announced a withdrawl, but it's been steadily declining ever since then.

I don't think PeMex (the Mexican national oil company) pulled personnel from their rigs in the gulf.

Every browser has preferences or options. In Firefox, it's ->tools ->options. Under content, is block pop ups and an exceptions button. You can add websites to that list and just for that site pop ups will work.

re: #39 Fenway_Nation

I think with the American economy stabilizing and the dollar strengthening combined with demand in oil dropping, the decline in prices makes sense. Also, the summer driving season is over so we may see even lower demand. Prices may go up after the damage is assessed, but hopefully $140/barrel oil is gone for a while.

Kids are going to have sex! Raging hormones is too much for many, and I was one of them. Plus I saw little reason "hold my self back" till I got married, and that didn't happen till I was forty. Sexual abstinence is not a viable alternative when you are seventeen and horny!

53 lifeofthemind  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 10:30:02am

This garbage about the Pallin's daughter reminds me of how vested the left is in their belief that conservatives are hypocrites who are not really caring and tolerant. Remember about 5 years ago when Bush had a Yale reunion at the White House? That was not exactly a meeting of the Republican Central Committee and George Bush Fan Club. The left were salivating at the expectation that the President would be put in an awkward situation and react badly. They were terribly disappointed.

Louise Casselman, who was at that White House Yale reunion with her husband, Kirk Casselman and a Bay Area contingent, says that although Yale was still all-male in 1968, one alum has since had a sex-change operation. "You might remember me as Peter when we left Yale," said the woman upon coming face to face with the president. George W. didn't pause for a moment, reports Casselman, grabbed the alumna's hand, and said "Now you've come back as yourself."

Look, this development will actually be positive for the most part with Evangelicals. First they hear that Sarah Palin chooses the life option even though she had a Downs Syndrome baby and once again the family (and Bristol) has chosen the life option in this recent case. That’s a double “ca-ching”. Let’s call this the Evangelical daily double. If anything, this whole situation will probably make more people around the country relate to her and her family. It makes them more real. Will there by some turned off by the whole pre-marital sex thing? Of course but this type of story doesn’t sink her at all with Evangelicals

But there are very effective abstinence programs that I remember from that time. The chess club, band, debate, Dungeons and Dragons, Star Trek, and math class were all guaranteed to result in celibacy. In the service the free government issued glasses were called either STANAVUGSPECS or Birth Control Glasses because of their powerful prophylactic effect. Now I have to think of a new excuse.

If you don't select any text before clicking the icon, it simply inserts the tags with the text cursor positioned between them, so you can either type the text you want to quote or paste it in.

There is a huge difference between the demonRAT nominee and the veep for McCain. Fancy this from Obama:

“Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old,” he said. “I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. I don’t want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn’t make sense to not give them information.”

Now from Palin:

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."

Big difference.

That's the demographic reality.

But the consequences, are divorced from the action.

Abstinence is just as valid as any other and 100% effective everything it's used. It's another tool.

Abstinence is only 100 percent if used. Most kids want to find out what the mystery and excitement of sex is all about. They want to be like the adults and get laid. Birth control is the only really proven solutions, condoms are the safest, but everyone hates them.

Well the safest in terms of preventing a lot of STD, but not for birth control.
IIRC, the "pill" is like 98% effective, and condoms are only 85% effective.

True.

This is where "farm kids" have it a little different than 'city kids' - they know what the cows and goats and bunny rabbits do and what comes of it.

I'd rather we get over the "abstinence vs barriers" distraction and get back to a "preventing unwed mothers and automatically impoverished kids" debate.

Teach both, damnit! Abstinence works - and some percentage of the kids will have the nads to apply it. For those that don't, at least know how to prevent.

The problems happen when kids get out of the structure of their lives and into unfamiliar (but feeling good) territory.

Once they needed a teacher to cover a Hygiene class. It was often assigned as a 5th class to an English or Social Studies teacher who did not have a full load. No one was pretending that anyone needed to learn the mechanics or theory of the subject on an academic level. The class was a gut, a vacation for the teacher and the students. Some students came to me and asked if I was going to be assigned to teach that class. I answered that I doubted it because under me it would be a very short class. They asked what I meant by that. So I looked at them smiled and answered, "Everybody understand the definition of Statutory Rape? What part of No don't you understand?" The kids laughed and said they understood. I did not get assigned to the class.

Not true. There were several breaches following Katrina passing; most were due to seepage problems, not overtopping or even collisions of barges with levee walls.

That's what they are reporting on Fox.

Doesn't it seem like Nagin has been marginalized this time?
During Katrina I remember him with a lot of face time, whining & doing nothing.
It seems like Bobby Jindal just took control & ran with it.

He had to. Nagin would leave his people in a lurch unless he was forced by the state to evacuate....

I do hope that Jindal performs well but there's no chance he'll ever get close to the presidency. Teaching creationism in public school may play well with the republican base but nationally it isn't going to fly. Even worse is that he's performed exorcisms. He'll never get elected.

GOVERNOR BOBBY JINDAL PANICKED AND UNNECESSARILY EVACUATED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE

Governor Jindal has cost the state millions of dollars in what most experts saw as conservative scare tactics and pandering to Republican Presidential nominee to be John McCain. With the urging of President Bush, still reeling from his disastarous response to Katrina, Gov. Jindal put millions of people at risk forcing them to leave the safety of theor own homes as what amounted to no more than a tropical storm washed ashore.

Seattle can be so proud! We've joined the big leagues at last!

Of boondoggles.

Is Sound Transit really one of 'the world's biggest boondoggles'?

Denver's International Airport, which soared from $1.5 billion at announcement in 1985 to $5 billion on completion in 1995.

The English Channel Tunnel, which came in at double the bid price of 4.75 billion pounds and half the estimated revenue.

Boston's Big Dig, which ballooned from $3.7 billion to $14.6 billion.

Miami's Metrorail expansion, with costs that tripled from the initial estimate.

Sydney Opera House, which went from $7.2 million to $102 million and took ten years longer to build than expected.

Bay Area Rapid Transit, which came in at double the original cost estimate and 50 miles shorter.

I'm just bursting with pride! Say brother can you spare a dime?

Got to agree with Rove and Obama on this, bringing up the maritial and pregnancy status of candidates children is beneath a national presidential campaign. The kids are not running for the office, and making them a campaign issue is a poor choice and shows a lack of respect and judgment....

Here in Lafayette, eyewall expected within the hour. We still have electricity and have had only mild gusts of wind up to about 40 mph. Airport (five miles from me) is reporting gusts of 70 mph. The trees are swaying a bit, light intermittent rain. Frankly, this is amazing for what we were told to expect.

Was a good day to announce the Grand-baby. I think Obama wished he could have announced his VP today.

Even very good parents can have daughters who get pregnant. I do not know the Gov. enough to comment on her parenting skills but I do have a several friends who appeared to me to be good caring parents have grandkids a little earlier than expected.

She woould have done better to take Future SiL hunting a time or two. The father of a gal my son dated did that. He decided it best to keep the trousers zipped, and she dumped him for the local Marine recruiter.

Thank goodness for the Uniform Interstate Support Act that allows DA's across the nation to go after dead-beat parents no matter where they live to garnish their wages and get their tax refunds.

Hope those in LA and the gulf coast are okay. Good to hear the storm didn't intensify as it moved north of Cuba.

The power of nature is truly awesome. I was on vacation this weekend at Clearwater Beach FL and we were getting some really awesome cloud formations, torrential rains and sustained 30-40MPH winds over the weekend from the feeder bands. I thought I might have seen some cloud rotation Saturday afternoon out over the ocean.

Here is a neat video of Air Force hurricane hunters flying into Gustav.

Houma/Morgan City got the worst of it. Opelousas/St. Landry parish got alot of rain, tornado warnings.

The levees the Corps are building in NOLA should be higher than 15 ft. I just don't understand what those guys are thinking...

342 GT Charlie  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 7:55:38pm

The hurricane is supposed to walk from Alexandria over to Nacogdoches, TX over the next 2 days and then dissipate. In Northwest LA we've been getting sporatic showers since noon. The forecast says 100% rain tomorrow and Wednesday with winds 30-40 gusting 50-55.

We're battened down. No ill effects (barring a power outage) expected.
