Just left St. Paul where the protests were going on. A lot of well armed police seemed to control the crowd. There were a few altercations including some people sitting in front of an empty charter bus and they were quickly removed by some visiting Minneapolis police on horseback. The demonstrators say they were sprayed but I was right there and did not witness that. They poured water in their eyes trying to get media attention which they did get. I saw several instances of this where they were acting as they had been sprayed only looking for cameras and then giving them space to film the act once the cameras did show up.

18 Pullus Iulius  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 1:00:09pm

Everything this campaign does is outside the mold. And, unlike some other "New Ideas" campaigns I've worked on, this one seems to be run by sane individuals. I'm glad I've been able to see this.

19 pat  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 1:00:10pm

What is this about sand bags on buses? That sounds like attempted murder.

20 Alouette  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 1:00:22pm
About 200 people from a group called Funk the War noisily staged its own separate march. Wearing black clothes, bandanas and gas masks, some of their members smashed windows of cars and stores. They tipped over newspaper boxes, pulled a big trash bin into the street, bent the rear view mirrors on a bus and flipped heavy stone garbage bins on the sidewalks.

One man who seemed to be the leader of the group carried a yellow flag with the motto "Don't Tread on Me." The group chanted: "Whose streets? Our streets!"

Meanwhile, a group of about 100 anarchists pushed a trash bin filled with trash and threw garbage in the streets and at cars. They also took down orange detour road signs. One of them used a screwdriver to puncture the back tire of a limousine waiting at an intersection and threw a wooden board at the vehicle, denting its side. Another hurled a glass bottle at a charter bus that had stopped at an intersection. The bottle smashed into pieces but didn't appear to damage the bus.

Stay classy, guys!

21 rorschach  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 1:01:14pm

These conventions have become all about playing to the media, looking for the almighty "bounce".

It's about time at least one of the parties adopted a business-like attitude and focused on getting something done for a change.

McCain and Palin will do the heavy lifting, starting next weekend.

They'll do that once after getting sprayed with a fire hose. Tremendous crowd pleaser! Knocks them back about 50 to 100 feet, if done properly!

There is something interesting about having the Convention held at a place called the Excel Energy Center, as energy is a hot issue this election. Hopefully I'll get to see some of this, even if I might be horrible at live responding. I do know that I wouldn't want to miss McCain's acceptance speech.

I am very curious how Olbermann and Matthews will react to that, and how the Obamans will look at it. It is their time to prove that they are not the biased, Obama lovers that they show themselves to be, and it is time to see how the Obama is a Rock Star crowd will react. McCain isn't a bad speaker, and will probably throw some good punches.

re: #20 Alouette

Stay classy, guys!

Too bad the ART SLUTS aren't still around:

Who, you may ask, are the Art Sluts?

Once upon a time ago (during Gulf War I) when I was an active member, the Libertarian Party of Minnesota was holding their Tax Day demonstration by the west entrance of the Minneapolis post office. We were handing out our party theft day literature to our fellow victims of socialist compassion. I was at the time wearing a dress shirt and tie to distinguish myself the Grassroots Party in their more proletarian garb. This didn't always succeed, as there was one woman who thought I was pothead and exhibited a near-psychotic fear of same.

But since the Grassroots crowd were a bunch of socialists perhaps that fear wasn't so irrational.

At about ten p.m., a dozen (my estimate, I didn't get an exact count) female humanoids (they were shaped like females) in tight black somethings came marching by wearing gas masks (not something one would want to wear in cold weather) and big--like three foot wide--yellow bows with price tags marked "$60,000,000,000" They were handing out little red cards identifying themselves as "Sluts for Peace/Art/Humanity/Sanity and the Earth". (With a name like that, did they really expect to be taken seriously?)

One side of their card read:

Midnight approaches. Let's talk about death and taxes. How much did you pay? For what? We see red.

They weren't very talkative and one really can't see very much in a gas mask.

The other side of the card read as follows:

Stay where you are now silent, or
Let us assist you in asking
Universal Questions about life.
This is it, our only life on earth;
Speak to your heart.

Now if they really wanted an emotional conversation (Oh wow man! Reason! What a concept!) the least they could have done was to leave a phone number where they could be reached. As it is, this was simply another instance of mindless posturing, (possibly a "New Age" voodoo ceremony or a audition for a NEA or other government arts grant) interfering with rational political discourse. I had to explain to someone that I was not one of the Art Sluts before he would take one of our Libertarian theft day fliers. At the time I thought that at future demonstrations I should wear my BDU Woodland pattern cammo jacket.

The last two polls of likely voters have Obama +3 (one poll pre Dem convention, the other post). I think that's where the race is. I worry most about losing Ohio. I think Virginia and Florida go McCain.

I think the GOP can get a big bounce from their convention - they need to develop themes about Obama that stick. I recommend they focus on these:

- Focus on Obama's arrogance, past associations, voting record, and lack of accomplishment. Paint him as an ordinary politician.
- Focus on Biden's arrogance, past associations, voting record, and lack of accomplishment. No need to paint him as an ordinary politician since everyone knows he is one.
- Use the Biden pick as proof Obama is an ordinary politician. Contrast McCain's pick of Palin.
- Reform agenda. Admit past mistakes.

It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. Koskidz report rioting.....
I Was Tear Gassed By The St. Paul Police - Eyewitness Account

When they first appeared, they had dumpster on wheels in tow. They were dressed all in black and had bandanas over their faces. They kept chanting "the streets are ours" and yelled "cover!" every time they thought the police might move on them. There appeared to be about 100 to 125 of them. They dropped trash on the street behind them. Once they had emptied the dumpster, they overturned it in the street to block the police cars that were following them.

I saw them throw empty glass bottles at the police. At one point they tossed a detour sign and several sandbags off the 94 bridge at Kellogg Avenue. Luckily, the objects landed in the embankment and not in the roadway.

I saw them break windows on at least three police vehicles: a Bloominton Police SUV downtown, and State Patrol car on John Ireland Avenue in front of the Minnesota History Center and a St. Paul Police car on Rice Street. I also saw them slash the tires of a limousine on Rice Street.

They intermittently attempted to block the police from following them. On two occasions they dragged road signs into the street in an attempt to block streets. The second time they got hold of a dumpster they turned it over in the middle of Rice Street in front of the Capitol Mall to prevent to police from directly following them. This actually worked for about two minutes.

The police eventually followed them across the Rice Street bridge into downtown. There they protesters seemed to get a little more violent. Two of the three acts of violence I witnessed against a police vehicle happened here. All of the police vehicles I saw attacked were unoccupied. This coincided with the arrival of the SWAT team. The protesters pulled newspaper vending machines and road signs into the street. The police finally trapped them between two blocks. I'm not sure of the exact streets, but it was by the Gallery Exchange building.

At that point the SWAT team moved to take them down. I was directly across a narrow street from where the protesters were cornered. There were several loud pops. I saw smoke. I believe these were concussion grenades but I'm not sure. I definitely saw the protesters fired upon with rubber bullets. Then the SWAT team gassed them. Everyone in the immediate area them ran for cover, including myself. I got the gas pretty bad. A nice woman from Legal Observers washed my eyes out and gave me a drink.

HorsesAss on Palin (N.W. liberal blog)

Of the 38 men to have been elected President since 1789, eight have failed to complete their final term—more than one out of five. And at 72 years old, in remission from cancer for a second time (he had deadly melanomas removed in 1993 and 2000), the possibility of a President John McCain’s death or incapacitation in office is far from remote. Hopeful Americans stand in line to plunk down hard earned cash on a 1 in 120,000,000 chance to hit the Powerball lottery, yet if history is any guide, a Vice President Sarah Palin would stand a roughly 1 in 4.75 chance of succeeding John McCain before the end of his second term.

Those are damn good odds for Palin. And damn bad odds for the US and the world if she is unprepared to lead our nation through our current turbulent times.

Okay, Goldy, based on your logic why are you voting Obama & Biden combined with ZERO executive experience?

Well, the other night there were four "ladies" wearing lumberjack shirts at the next table in the pizza parlor. I can only make assumptions about their gender identity (NTTAWWT). They were quite large, loud, and obnoxious. But I damn sure wasn't going to tell them to quiet down. No sir.

Yeah, some of them were pepper sprayed, and good, when they rushed the police (mostly they just hit and run all day). The altercation lasted all of five seconds. Aside from causing minor property damage, it was hardly a fair fight today.

How exactly is Palin inexperienced? Two years as governor. Years as a mayor of a city in Alaska that is comparable in size to the community organizing Obama days.

That's real executive experience. She's got a wee bit of foreign policy experience too - given that she was chair of a multistate commission on oil and gas that had foreign affiliates. She had to regularly deal with Canadian officials, and her state borders Russia as well.

She has a record in Alaska that you can actually look at - compared with Obama, whose a tabula rasa. Biden is little better, given that he's got tenure, but not the knowledgeable experience you'd hope fore. Besides, if Biden were truly a good choice to cover for Obama's flaws (namely inexperience and lack of achievements), why isn't he at the top of the ticket? Well, there's a reason for that - he's the gaffe maker.

re: #118 sattv4u2

While at work this morning, I was taking in satellite footage of a McCain/ Palin rally in St Louis. There were the requesite McCain signs, the new Palin ones but what was very VERY interetsting to me, in the cameras view I saw dozens of Hillary signs, the holders of which were cheering loudly for McCain Palin

Over the past few years I've been upset to see McCain working so closely with Hillary Clinton. I even remember a joint interview where they seemed particularly cozy with each other (I no longer remember the issue). I was furious at the time, but now, in some weird unforseen way (who would have guessed Hillary wouldn't get the nomination?), all that respectful schmoozing is going to work out well for McCain. Many Hillary supports aren't leftists, but see her as a champion of working women and working mothers. Palin, as a strong woman with both career and family, is going to play well with those voters.

I disagree with you in 163. People who came here such as you mention wanted to assimilate and become Americans. My grandfather, born in Germany, refused to speak German even though he was fluent in it, but would translate for others in a pinch.
The people coming up from Mexico have a diffrent agenda. they view south western states as part of Mexico, and their right. They do not want our culture, only our money. They import crime along with drugs, not because it is part of their culture, but because it undermines ours.

Actually, its not fear of mom, but rather grandma who will be pissed, and the neighbor who will laugh them to scorn.
Moms gonna hock the title to the mini van to post their bail and hire a good liberal lawyer who will get charges reduced and the prick will do community service for a few days.

Except the St. Paul cops aren't set to be wearing the riot gear all the time... They will have it "available" to them.

One of the many reasons that a lot of people around here HATE the St. Paul mayor.

Kinda like when he slashed all the veteran officers pay grades to less than what rookies make after their union refused to endorse him.

Pathetic.

They probably weren't St. Paul cops.

I have no doubt that they are... All I was saying was that the mayors office said they didn't want them in gear unless something went wrong, as opposed to being ready from the get go.

GAZE - To glare with silent disapproval at a troll who has intentionally attempted to derail a topic. A sign of non-acknowledgment of a particularly offensive or inflammatory post, and a sign to other commenters not to “feed the troll” (pay attention to a disruptive commenter). Usually written all capitals.

296 lawhawk  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 2:12:32pm

Curious. Very curious. The NYT wants people to think that the GOP is in tumult because Palin's daughter is pregnant. That seems to go against everything I'm reading from all the major players, to say nothing of Palin's family or the McCain campaign's reaction and knowledge that they knew about the situation before picking Palin.

RCP has a good aggregate of polls, Rasmussen is fairly good; Zogby much less so. Gallup and other organizations have results that sometimes defy description based on polling samples, sample size, and massaging of data sets to obtain results (such as oversampling D to show Obama ahead).

Still, the only poll that counts is the one national election on Nov 4 (November 5 for all those Democrats who still want to vote for the inexperienced team of Obama/Biden).

Most polls are not to be trusted, you have to dig into the poll methods, sample size and type, and whether it's likely voters or not. Unfortunately since so many polls are being taken so fast and many are merely polls to create a story for a journo, it's hard to get a real feel with polls. Use real clear politics to look at them all for any given day if you want to get a better picture of reality.

re: #261 sattv4u2

yeah, because we KNOW all the Italians that came here didn't bring crime! (and I am 50% Italian, 1/4 Sicilian) To this day, you go to the North End section of Boston and ITALIAN is the working language. True, my grandparents assimilated to America, but they kept Italian/ Irish at home. They also for the most part only dealt with Italian merchants, Italian laborers, etc etc. It was (and for a great part) still is that way in American ethnic communities

When I think of Italians I don't think of crime. My heritage is part Swiss Italian, part German, part Polish, Part Jewish, but I'm 100% American.
I was raised in a small town that was mostly German. down the road were towns with Primarilly Polish, Danish, Dutch, and Scandanavian settlers. We assimilated, but we held our heritage festivals, and still do. Some things we keep, but some we toss away and embrace America. I've attended Santee Tribal functions as well. Its all part of our heritage.

How many of those Italian folk speak only Italian? My father spoke German among his friends, much to his FiLs dissatisfaction, and I've been in places where several languages were being spoken at once, but they all spoke Americanese, or english. (knew a guy from Liverpool who got angry every time we called it english.)
I never saw some one flying a German flag, or an Italian flag, Saw what I thought was a French flag once, but it turned out to be a clean bed sheet drying on the line. They all flew American flags.

345 offendi  Mon, Sep 1, 2008 2:29:09pm

Ding me if you will, but the Palin pregnancy and McCain's decision to suspend a full Republican convention, i.e. large scale watchable media event, pretty much means that the Republican Party will be rebuilding itself next year. Those Republicans who voted for McCain in the primaries may need to do some soul-searching as well.

Why, you may ask?

Will women view negatively a Vice Presidential candidate more focused on her political career than oversight and involvement in the lives of her children? Is the likely controversy offset by significant experience? Unless they find Joe Biden in a motel room with a sheep this will be a significant factor in the election. If McCain's people in fact knew about this, why did they even pick her? Good judgment in a Presidential candidate? Not. Married at 17? You think Hillary supporters will like that?

Additionally Obama had his Obamacropolus speech and events. McCain has overacted to New Orleans, and will not get the full benefit of people having the ability to get to know him and republican values in their own living rooms via the convention. Really poor judgment. Just don't have parties. Have a serious convention.

The guy deserved to lose in 2000. Hopefully everyone will get a chance up and coming Republicans who will hold out the hope of restoring the party to Congress and the Presidency.

In february, a friend of one of my sons friends took a point blank from a .38 in the head. Never lost consciousness, and the guy then worked to thwart the police investigation. Brain damage? No brain TO damage.

I've seen with my own eyes a case where a guy was shot point blank in the head with a 9mm, and not only lived, he was 100% fine.

Long story short, he got burned in a 2am drug deal, and was shot in the head. After being hit, he fell to the ground and played possum, and the shooter left him for dead. After he got to the hospital, he was X-rayed and the bullet was located in the soft tissue at the BACK OF HIS NECK.

What happened is that the bullet hit the front of his head at a glancing angle, then tracked around under the skin to the back of his head. Guy was 100% fine.

Apparently, this sort of thing is pretty common. The human skull is made of 3/8" dense bone, and it takes the right kind of hit to go through it. A hit at an angle may just glance off.

re: #414 goddessoftheclassroom

There seems to be some sort of meme among these dimwits that conservatives disapprove of contraception. They have confused the teaching of the desirability of abstinence prior to marriage as some sort of negation of biologic and human health education. Bill Bennett was trying to explain, but Blitzer does not get it. Protestants have nothing against contraceptives. And as a whole, they do not believe you will go to hell if you have premarital sex.

.45 ball ammo has a reputation for exiting ("overpenetration"), and I've seen it happen. Soft ammo is less likely to do this.

I've also seen more than one one-hit stops with 9mm, including a case where a guy was shot under the right armpit. Bullet went through his right lung, through his heart, through his left lung, and exited, leaving 8 separate wound holes. Needless to say the victim didn't last long.

Another one was a head shot. Unlike the last story I related, this 9mm entered the side of the victims head turning its contents to pulp.

The moral of the story is that its mostly about shot placement.
