It doesn't matter if a lizard or a giraffe laid that egg; if a chicken hatches out of it, it's a chicken egg.

Hence, the egg came first.

The secret to making nice yellow yolks:

Put the eggs in a pot of water. Bring the water to a full boil. Turn off the heat and cover. Wait five minutes. Perfect hard boiled eggs.

Take pot off stove, replace hot water with cold, run dribble of cold water into pot for ten minutes.

Cooling the eggs keeps the outer yolk from oxidizing, if you keep the eggs around a day or three.

Also, larger eggs may need a little more time than five minutes from a full boil.

I heard about this photo process called HDR. It is time-lapse photography, but instead of one shot per time frame, it takes 7, only at different f stops, but does this very fast, within a second. Then, all 7 shots are combined together to make one picture, but that one picture has the best characteristics of all 7 shots.

Then, those shots are assembled in to the classic time lapse exposure movie.

Anti-war protest at GOP Convention turns violent

Protesters attacked members of the Connecticut delegation when they got off their buses near Xcel Center, delegates told FOX News.com and a local TV station.

A group of protesters came toward the delegation and tried to rip the credentials off their necks and sprayed them with a toxic substance that burned their eyes and stained their clothes, delegate Rob Simmons told KMSP-TV.

One 80-year-old member of the delegation had to be treated for injuries, and several other delegates had to rinse their eyes and clothing, the station reported.

re: #111 Thanos

I think you can do something like that with any existing DSLR if you have a tripod and using the bracketing option. I've never tried it with my Canon XTi, but I will often bracket shots +/-1 stop when I'm not sure how well I'm going to capture things, plus to get different feels for photos. You could conceivably run several bracketing solutions and then stitch the photos together in PShop, though I think Radiance is the system of choice.

Revenge of the Chickens:
My ex-wife can't stand chickens either, 'cause as a little girl she came home from school one day, chicken soup was on the dinner table, she ate it, then asked her mother where her favorite chicken was. Her mom said "you just ate her."
Flash forward to 1989, bitch comes to my parents' house to "try and save our marriage" (this, four months or so after she kicked me out!). The night she stormed out of the house and demanded my parents return her to Chicago...she had dinner with us. Hot dogs and Rice-a-Roni.

I am amused at the report saying that "nearly 10,000 veterans and protesters" were there. Anti-war protest at GOP Convention turns violent

This is probably as good a time as any to bring up one of my favorite scenes in all of science fiction, the Massacre of the Comet Wardens in Niven and Pournelle's classic 1977 Lucifer's Hammer.

time: late 70s
place: mostly Southern California

An amateur astronomer named Tim Hamner discovers a new comet on a course that will take it very close to the Earth. The comet nucleus will rain mountain size chunks all over the Earth if it happens to hit, causing tsunamis, drastic weather change, and effects akin go nuclear winter.
In the weeks and months after Hamner's discovery, the chances of a collision grow from one in a million to one in a hundred to one in ten. A new religious cult, the Comet Wardens, forms in Southern California. Playing on the discoverer's name, their leader declares that the comet is the "hammer of God" sent to punish humanity for its wickedness. The Wardens dress in white robes and oppose all efforts to prepare for a possible collision, insisting that only prayer and repentance will save humanity.
By the morning the comet is due, millions have already fled the LA basin for the hills and deserts. With a collision deemed ever more likely, the last hold-outs run for the hills, jamming the freeways.

In a final spectacular demonstration, the white robed Comet Wardens chain themselves across a major traffic artery, snarling traffic for miles and trapping the panic stricken hordes in the city.
The comet actually hits, dropping a huge asteroid into the ocean just off LA. It is clearly visible from the city, God's own tsunami is headed their way and thousands cannot escape.
The Comet Wardens have thrown away the keys to their chains, there is no time or equipment to cut the chains and open the highway, and the police have fled.
Thousands of would-be refugees realize that they are doomed and that they could have gotten away if not for the Comet Wardens, now helpless in their long chains as the vengeful mob pounces. They have about half an hour before the tsunami hits.

Read it, it's good.

So the consensus at the end of this Labor Day Weekend seems to be a bit mixed. The base is energized for Sarah Palin and the McCain candidacy. She will however have to navigate through some choppier waters than earlier perceived. I still love the pick and think McCain can parlay this pick into a tremendous momentum up to Nov. 4. Having said that, the long knives are out. I only hope she goes on the offensive sooner than later because the story about her daughter can be a plus rather than a negative if it is presented as affirmation for life rather than abortion. As for the DUI, well these people are Amercans and they are our neighbors next door...

re: #146 Thanos and rawmuse

Produce HDR (High Dynamic Range) Images

Once primarily a tool of video post production, High Dynamic Range photography has enjoyed a surge in popularity thanks to digital photography software, which makes it easy to produce HDR images.

Photoshop, Photomatix and other software tools make it possible to combine multiple exposures of the same subject into one image that more closely matches what the human eye sees.

If you're unfamiliar with HDR, consider the classic ending of a Hollywood western -- the cowboy rides off into the sunset while the love interest he leaves behind watches from the doorway. Such a scene has far too great a range between light and dark to be rendered by film or digital sensors. This is where HDR trickery comes in.

If this update is correct, then that's a pretty big opening night.

Submitted by haloka on Mon, 09/01/2008 - 20:50.
Police authorities said of those arrested today, 73 were charged with felonies, 42 with gross misdemeanors, and 48 with misdemeanors.

Should be a real circus at the hearings tomorrow. Do they still have Saddam's courtroom cage somewhere in storage.

/of course, NVG and a nonrestrictive ROE would probably take care of the problem for the rest of the RNC

This just in; Fairchild semiconductor is merging with Honeywell Industries; insiders report that the new company will be tentatively named; Fair-Well Honey-Child.

True story:

I used to work for Honeywell in the Information Systems (mainframe computer) division. This got taken over by Groupe-Bull from France and the named was changed to Honeywell-Bull.

One memorable advertising campaign featured the slogan "Know Bull".

/I kid you not

More on yahoo news headlines.

Last week, all six highlighted headlines were about Obama and the DNC. This week, only one briefly mentioning the GOP convention in connection with Gustav.

BUT, they found room for this urgent story that could not wait another moment:

Watch out for drug names that look, sound alike

I am also guessing that they will do a follow-up segment on the difference between coke(coca cola) and coke(Cocaine). AAAAAAAHHHHH! To live in this world of confusing names and languages!

One of my favorite books on the fear that drives the Media is John Stossel's Give Me a Break. Which begs the question, has Yahoo news(run by a few yahoos (tm)) run anything on the success at Anbar? OMG! Mrs. Optimizer put Communist News Network on (she's really not trained very well...), and I just heard a clip of Obama.

Obama was literally comparing HIS executive experience in running his campaign (which has many times the employees and budget) to Palin's experience in running Wasilla!

So he's not only comparing himself to his opposition's VP, but he's also stacking the deck by comparing to her experience as mayor, instead of her experience as Governor!

They're totally unhinged!

"McCain, you magnificent bastard!"

And O'Rielly was out classed by Dick Morris....and that is really saying something because Morris has no class....

Well, I can offer my analysis of it, after reading a jillion articles about the pick:

In one stroke McCain has:

1) Ursurped Obama's "Change" theme, which he, himself, has exposed as a fraud (with Biden).
2) Stolen the spightlight away from "the One", by creating a new star who's a lot more likeable than the elitist windbag. She's "poised, articulate, upbeat, likable, genuine, forceful, and physically attractive", as Bidinotto put it. Now she's even got her daughter's pregnancy going on, which steals the airtime away from The One.
3) Put the spotlight on Obama's inexperience. Every time they criticize Palin for her most obvious weakness, they expose their own. Her greatest weakness also acts as one of the ticket's greatest assets! It's genius! And - in contrast to Obama - she has real accomplishments in her short tenure.
4) Set up the Obama campaign for further alienating women voters. As they attack her for lacking what Obama also lacks, the impression will be that they are saying she's unqualified because she's a woman.
5) Highlighted the energy issue, one of the very biggest issues of the election, which Palin is at the heart of, and the Dems have been unresponsive on.
6) Reinvigorated his reputation as a "maverick". Clearly you're not some old geezer afraid of change, or some kind of Bush clone (he would never be so bold)!
7) Reassured his base.
8) Totally thrown his competition for a loop! They're already making mistakes. LOTS of them!

In summary, you have completely turned this campaign upside-down!

I've started using the phrase, "McCain, you magnificent bastard!" I'm bummed that a newbie called nukezdoc beat me to it in his/her first post!

re: #67 Sunlight

Feature suggestion for Charles:
When you put up a new post, maybe have an automatic comment be entered into any active threads saying a new post was just put up. By the time I figure it out, the whole world has moved on and it's hard for my feeble slowness to catch up. I'm kind of like the turtles in the cable commercials.

Try this: Whenever you're logged onto LGF with your username and password, you can use the LGF SPY option selection which is found in the upper left of your screen, at the top of whatever page you're on. This opens a rapidly-scrolling page which gives you a glimpse of the first few lines of each and every message that is posted on LGF.

It's fun to watch, but if it goes too fast for you to follow you can click on the COMMENTS button to turn the scrolling on or off. (You can click on several other options, too. Just experiment with it and it'll show you what it's capable of.)

If you open LGF SPY in one window, and also open a separate thread-window in your browser, and then arrange the two windows side by side so they don't obscure each other, you can watch both at once, giving you pretty much what you're asking for. It's addictive.

Anti-war protest at GOP Convention turns violent

Yes, the cops should really crack down on people using chlorine as weapons (hypochlorite is quite poisonous).

Chlorine can kill.

We had a neighbor who died in a Jacuzzi (fainted from the heat and inhaled some water). We thought he died of drowning but the coroners report indicated that the highly chlorinated water in his lungs killed him.

[Splashing of chlorine on person can kill]

Moments after being splashed with bleach on Jan. 28, Archie Dale Hall began experiencing breathing problems. Acccording to testimony Tuesday from a Cincinnati firefighter who responded to a 911 call for help, the 39-year-old Avondale man had to be assisted to an ambulance. He was rushed to University Hospital.
He was in obvious respiratory distress,” said Lt. William Neal. “He was laying on his back. His eyes were red. He was breathing heavily and he had low blood oxygen .... He wasn't able to talk well and we couldn't get a lot of information from him.” Mr. Hall lost consciousness at the hospital and died after three weeks on a respirator. Prosecutors say Mr. Hall died as a result of bleach inhalation...prosecution contends that the teen, who is not being named because of her age, intentionally threw bleach on her father during an argument over her 17-year-old boyfriend...

See: Girl on trial

[Chlorine bomb]

The chlorine gas, in canisters loaded in a small van, hit a market in Abu Sayda in Diyala province on Tuesday, in a tactic pioneered by Sunni insurgents in Ramadi last month. Diyala has seen a spike in violence since the US-Iraqi "surge" in the capital.

Hospital officials and victims said it appeared that chlorine had been used as many of those injured suffered burns, had difficulty breathing and had their sight affected....Casualty figures ranged from 32-45.

See: Attacks

[Chlorine has high toxicity if inhaled]

Toxicity Characteristics
