58 Arbalest  Thu, Sep 4, 2008 9:45:21pm

Not that I disbelieve polls, but the bottom line is now clear:

If you do not vote for McCain (and over the past few months, a few people have expressed reservations, talked about protest votes, etc.), and try to get everyone who is undecided or not completely committed to voting straight "D", then we will have 4 years of BHO and his clowns.

There are no other options. It is this simple now.

If you don't vote for McCain, then we all suffer.

59 karmic_inquisitor  Thu, Sep 4, 2008 9:45:24pm

On the whole issue of polling - much has been done this year to alter the polling models to reflect the "enthusiasm gap".

That gap is now gone. After the last week, enthusiasm is high among McCain/Palin supporters and they will be showing up.

And Rasmussen posted numbers today showing the party identification gap has closed from double digits to about 5 points.

McCain is now creating momentum around reform and restoring the brand. He will go with that message up to election day. Obama has a big problem. It may be over for him in as little as a month.

I agree, in addition to the normal campagin stress, he has all his followers telling him what he as to be for them. And a few financiers telling him he has to win. Add to that the real thread of a whacko trying to 'cause him harm --I'd say he is under a bit of stress.

Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
Thursday, Sep 4, 2008

The two party conventions showcased vastly different directions for our country. Senator Obama and Senator Biden offered the new ideas and positive change America needs and deserves after eight years of failed Republican leadership. cried like little girls after Senator McCain and Governor Palin do nothanded him his ass.

After listening to all the speeches this week, I heard nothing that suggests the Republicans are ready to fix the economy for middle class families, provide quality affordable health care for all Americans, guarantee equal pay for equal work for women, restore our nation's leadership in a complex world or tackle the myriad of challenges our country faces. roll over for Obama and the Media So, to slightly amend my comments from Denver: NO WAY, NO HOW, NO McCAIN-PALIN.if the sonofabitch would have picked me, he wouldn't be in this mess.

Talking about age and wisdom beating youth and enthusiasm.

The Royal Bank of Scotland just aired a great ad on Fox. Old man and young man on golf course. Old man says, "When I was a young man, I would hit the ball over that tree and right onto the green." Young man tries it and the tree blocks the ball. Old man says, "of course, when I was a young man, that tree was a lot shorter".

hahahahahahahahaha

good ad agency.

To me , the most heartening news I've heard in a long time came on the gay "party music" radio station in SF today. It is the de facto station of the gay community aorund here. The DJs simply couldn't stop talking about Palin ALL DAY. And here's the incredible part: they weren't being negative! They were saying, in all sincerity, "She's cool," "She kicks ass," "She is just so hot in that dress," etc. Every now and then they'd mention her political opinions, which they disagree with, but that mostly fell by the wayside and was steamrolled by uncontrollable admiration.

I was astounded. It's usually the leftiest station outside of Pacifica Radio and NPR. But It seems like most of the staff is now ready to vote Palin-McCain. If that's happening here, in the center on moonbattism, I bet it's happening acorss the country.

He is also going to lose his temper at least once with Biden in public. For all Biden tries to play sympathy on his wife's death in the traffic accident, the other vehicle was operated by a person who was not intoxicated and was not charged with any offense to my knowledge. Biden is playing "urban legend" and the family of the operator of the other vehicle are bullshit right now. I would love for them to throw a libel suit at Biden in the middle of the campaign. The guy invents himself out of whole cloth like he did when he plagiarized the Welsh politicians "life story" in 1968. Fraud, thy name is Biden. If I ever do assign myself to my most serious weakness in knowledge(besides Mathematics and intellectually evasive subjects) it is in sports. Unfortunately I would know more about Excel if it was a videogame or political arena or one where The Beatles played than if it was held for sports. Now that I know about that, it is ironic that a hockey mother whose voice sounded not so different from a native Minnesotan(Personally I loved her voice. It sounded commanding and charismatic) and who also is upfront on Energy Issues would speak at a hockey arena named the Excel Energy Center in Minnesota.

But yeah, back to what I originally flubbed on, in my garnish of sarcasm and overacting moonbattish streams of consciousness ranting, I meant to say that McCain should've had his acceptance speech on top of Mount. Olympus. Yeah, that is the ticket! (sarc. for the innocent)

Calif should be ripe for support for such a wonderful candidate. But the voices of the Calif people will not be heard.

Hockey is a life style of us in the frozen north and its demise here is that they have moved it inside.

/ grumpy old fart that shoveled ice before playing:)

Whether you know it or not, I actually used to really enjoy hockey and called it my second favorite sport(Soccer was my first) a long time ago. Unfortunately Skiing took soccer's place and hockey was way too fast for me.

Because of my disability I have very slow reflex/motor skills usually and it feels like a nightmare to actually run around in a suit and to start slinging pucks left and right watching out for Furious George or somebody to run roughshod over me. And this was field hockey BTW.

This was in Maryland, though I did see it become frozen a few times.

I want to get a rock steady (Jamaica 1966-69) station, but the algorithm isn't quite geared for that specificity, at least yet. I think they just have too few songs to choose from in that category.

I also tried setting up a Jpop station, but that didn't work too well either. Too limited a playlist. That's why I had to settle for a Shibuya/P5 station instead.

They really need to beef up their non-U.S. playlists, and also expand the criteria for similar/rejected songs algorithms, which aren't perfect yet.

Christie --

Why would the Republicans spend a whole night of their convention attacking ordinary people?

With the nation watching, the Republicans mocked, dismissed, and actually laughed out loud at Americans who engage in community service and organizing.

Our convention was different. We gave the stage to everyday Americans who hunger for change and stepped up to make phone calls, knock on doors, and raise money in small amounts in their communities.

You may have missed it, but we also showed the country a video with the faces and voices of those organizers, volunteers, and donors from every corner of the country.

I would be surprised that that was a guy and not a Lesbian. I also have had a few political surprises in my life but they don't usually happen with a political outsider trying to convince, and succeeding with some, those also that there are some merits of the inside. I think that some of the best, and I include Fenway on this, writings I have seen on here are anecdotes of Lefties acting bad/showing up Lefties, but also of surprising political conversions or interesting sea changes, because I love learning about people, and listening to stories about politics in the real world. Though I tend to avoid people also.

Maybe that is why I will major in Communications.

Yeah, I think we've got our own Rock Star now. Except not only does she rock, she also rolls, and can probably make a great King Crab roll too. That might be very important as the delegates did drown out the protestors by chanting that(USA! USA!). It is also symbolic as AQ doesn't have a hockey team, but AQ and all assorted nutcases and terrorists around the world combined are the USSR of today. Thank goodness we are still doing our job even with mindless fools like Jodie Evans(one of Obama's prime donors).

I did watch Miracle, about that moment. It is a shame that Herb Brooks died before the movie came out. Perhaps with McCain's policy platform on the surge and the like the question that arises is "Do you believe in Miracles?" and I give that a Yes I can. Perhaps I should've written his speech along with him and Mark Salter.

There were a lot of curious Americans!

According to preliminary estimates, Sarah Palin's speech at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night scored a higher rating than Hillary Clinton and 'in some cases' higher than Barack Obama.

Yup, more peeps watched the governor from Alaska than Hills!

The preliminary numbers show about 37 million households were tuned in to see the GOP's VP candidate speak.

If you missed her address, though, CLICK HERE to check it out!

Be warned: her speech is filled with many many factual inaccuracies.

Update: Wow!

The final numbers are in and….

I believe that sometime in the next sixty days Obama is going to have some sort of mini-meltdown/tantrum on the campaign trail.

The stress of a presidential election campaign is nothing for McCain, compared to what he's gone through.

Don't let wishing substitute for thinking. Obama's not going to melt down. He had a tough primary and he carried the day. He isn't going to shoot enough own-goals to put the Republicans over the top.

The election is being held against a backdrop of bad news, some of it manufactured by the media, but some of it real. This makes politics an uphill struggle for the incumbent party, no matter how bad the ideas of the other side may be.

Ah, another one, another Musician who has succumbed to Obamalitis, the one hat wonder.

You know with all of these C and D letters and open disdain against the McCain campaign using any song from the modern era(Let's see, John Mellancamp possibly argued against this, Medal of Honor composer argued against parts of his score being used, Boston didn't like More Than a Feeling with another campaign, etc.), perhaps we should use songs from 300 years ago. Then again perhaps the estate of Beethoven, for example, like Ode to Joy will protest because Obama is so full of "hope and change". That is why I would really want to market myself in a few years and finally cut my teeth somewhere. I have said it and I'll say it again, if Obama is so talented and intelligent why did he pick the dumbest VP choice? And if McCain is so senile and so crazy why did he pick the smartest VP choice? That is it, I believe that in the next few months Obama will lose the woman's vote because of his stupid political thinking.

Yet, it is funny, Obama linked his speech to MLK Jr. "I Have a Dream" Speech and McCain didn't link to Herb Brooks and the Miracle On Ice. Yet he had a kind of sunny optimism and the same kind of love for his country that Herb had for it also. So I really wouldn't complain.

Things are looking much better for McCain right now, but you're right.
Obama still has the edge.

I bet they fantasize about being dominated by her. The "furries" will want to get all dressed up as huskies for her dog sled.

Well Lizards, I have been interning in one of the McCain campaign's Victory Centers in Parma, Ohio, and boy did we have a big night tonight! We held a watch party for McCain's acceptance speech, and had a lot of volunteers making phone calls beforehand. We had close to 100 people crammed into our little storefront, to standing room only capacity, and people were absolutely fired up about this campaign. Ever since McCain announced Sarah Palin as his VP selection on Friday in Dayton (which I had the awesome opportunity to go to!), our phones have been ringing off the hook, and people have been stopping in at random to look for yard signs, bumper stickers, to donate money to the campaign, and to ask how they can get involved.

It has been truly inspiring to see what Sarah Palin and the excitement surrounding the RNC has done in terms of motivating people to see this ticket through to victory. People were so enthused tonight by Sen. McCain's speech that they stayed around until close to 1 AM just talking with one another, even on a work night (I just got home very recently). What have I taken away from all of this? McCain/Palin can, and will win in November, but it is going to take passionate people on the ground to make it happen.

Now, I'm not a paid staffer, I am just an individual who is excited about this ticket, so much so that I am working full time without pay. I don't need it. If we win in November, that will be all of the payment that I desire. At the risk of sounding a little lame, I hope that all of you will go out and find your local McCain office and make some phone calls, or knock on some doors. As much or as little as you can give, it truly does make a difference.

McCain/Palin '08!

Sarah's personality is so appealing when she's speaking.

She's lovely, but it goes beyond her pleasant expression and nice looks. There's something so real about her.

The Israeli film maker who has 5 hours of raw footage taken 4 or 5 months ago has a gold mine on his hands. He was mesmerized by her and he says that America will be, too, when they get to know her better.

I hope that the McCain/Palin campaign can get some of this footage!

That's it: The election is over. If the trendsetting gay vote just switched to Palin-McCain, then Obama has no chance.

Given the appeal of Sarah P., it could happen if gay voters wake up and realize that Obama is pretty much the same on gay rights issues as the Republican candidates.

Given that there is no viable candidate for their core issue, I'm thinking some will go with the candidates their gut tells them to vote for - e.g., the ticket with Sarah P. on it. Yes!

That's great to hear, Metal Man. I'm only 27, and this is the first campaign that I have ever worked on myself. I've always enjoyed politics, but I've been in positions in election years that precluded me from participating in elections. And, quite frankly, I'm having an absolute blast. I love working directly with people, even if I disagree with them, and I've found out quickly that this is basically all that politics is about.

I've met so many people who have told me that they are excited about McCain's candidacy, but tell me that they either don't have the time to volunteer, or that they don't think they would be able to make a difference. I just wish all of these people could understand how vitally important every phone call is, or every door that is knocked on.

That said, though, man am I exhausted. This is a lot of work, but boy is it fun!

It is how we connect directly with voters.

Here in Ohio, Gerald Ford lost to Jimmy Carter in 1976 by an average of ONE vote per precinct. Conversely, George Bush defeated John Kerry in 2004 by an average of ONE vote per precinct. What made the difference in 2004 for Bush was the ground game: Bush '04 had 80,000 volunteers all over Ohio making phone calls, doing lit drops, and knocking on doors, and the margin of victory was still that thin. The moral of this story is that, yes, even the simplest of tasks does make a difference!

re: #289 cliffster

Are you sure about that?

Yes, here is an excerpt from a candidate questionnaire that she completed when she was running for governor.

10. Do you support the Alaska Supreme Court’s ruling that spousal benefits for state employees should be given to same-sex couples? Why or why not?

No, I believe spousal benefits are reserved for married citizens as defined in our constitution.

There has been some confusion, because, due to constitutional requirements, she was forced to act against her own views, but she is personally opposed to providing these benefits.

Summary: The Associated Press reported that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin "opposes gay marriage -- constitutionally banned in Alaska before her time -- but exercised a veto that essentially granted benefits to gay state employees and their partners." However, the AP did not note that Palin stated that she vetoed the bill because the Alaska attorney general had advised her that it was unconstitutional, not because she believed same-sex partners of public employees should receive benefits.

Obama does not support gay marriage, but he is in favor of civil unions, including access to benefits for domestic partners. Palin is opposed to those things, so I don't think too many gays are going to be attracted to her side.

That is not strictly true. Sarah Palin, one month into her term, vetoed a bill that would have blocked gays and lesbians from health and other benefits provided to domestic partners of state workers. She in all honesty stated she was against the benefits, but that the constitution of the state clearly showed that the issue of blocking the rights was unconstitutional, so she vetoed the bill. She was honest about her belief, and she did her duty.

Obama and Palin are both against gay marriage. The issue of marriage and civil unions is really an opinion thing for these candidates anyway. None of them support a Constitutional amendment, so they are paying lip service when they say they are for or against civil unions.

Palin actually took action that protected gay rights for an entire state's domestic partners of state workers. Barry is for stuff, and he votes "present."

Rush Limbaugh has an interesting quote from Jonathan Alter about his plans to try to get the MSM to lean on Sarah Palin:

"I'd imagine that Palin will dodge press conferences in favor of interviews with people like Sean Hannity, Larry King and Ellen DeGeneres. Then, when the media complain that she is being kept away, the McCain campaign will cite the half dozen or so interviews she has granted as proof that the campaign press is just bellyaching. Brief press 'avails' on the plane will be useless, unless reporters ask open-ended queries designed to elicit proof of real knowledge. That should get Palin through the next three weeks. By the end of the month, the McCain camp can say she has to go to ground to prepare for [her] debate, where expectations will be so low for Palin that she will likely emerge intact.

"It will be up to the press and public to raise enough of a stink about this, that Palin is forced to submit to real interviews with real questions that show whether her real-life experience is any preparation for assuming high office. In that sense, the Palin nomination is as much of a test of us as it is of her."

The press underestimates Sarah Palin even after seeing her speak.

I think she will welcome tough interviews and charm these people out of their socks (entirely against their wills.)

The MSM doesn't understand what is happening.

Governor Palin is an inspired and brilliant choice for the Republican Party but the MSM can only see her in the limited and shallow terms that they use themselves when they look at women and politics.

So. What?!

She upheld the law as she should have. Why is this a problem for you?

As I said, it's not a problem for me. I was responding to Cattt's lighthearted suggestion that gays might be attracted to the Palin candidacy because there are no significant policy differences between her views on issues of concern to gays and Obama's views. My point was that there was a significant difference and that, barring the constitutional requirement, she wouldn't have vetoed the benefits bill. Presumably, if one is choosing between candidates, one would prefer a candidate that shares your values and concerns, not just a candidate who will act in your favor when forced to do so.

McCain and Obama go ice fishing. And for days on end, McCain comes back with fish and Obama none. Finally Harry Reid tells Obama that McCain is cheating so dont fish, just follow McCain around and find out how. Obama then reports back that he has caught McCain cutting a hole in the ice!

See, you are being logical. This is not a logical liking. There is something about Sarah Palin that appeals to people, including a lot of gays. As I mentioned, for example, Perez is conflicted. He doesn't agree with her, but he is really enthusiastic about her. That kind of enthusiasm, given the cold - or cooling off - appeal of the empty ssuit that is Barry - and the total blank that is his running mate - will garner votes for Mac-Cuda. Trust me on this.

He's definitely been cooling off. The core true believers and hardcore Dems will support him, but the fervor is DEFINITELY cooling off. This will resolut in people not voting. One example - the youth vote, a demographic groups that is heavily in his favor - while still supporting him in a majority, has had a precipitous fall in the percentage that plans to vote. It's down like 20 percent. They had that initial head rush, and then bang - it was gone. Kind of the crack candidate.

Also, I personally think Obama is too too metrosexual for words. I hate that look - hate hate hate it. I like a man to look like he works for a living - for example - Todd Palin is a hunk, as far as I'm concerned.

I have to admit, though, that I really like Mrs. Obama's look. I have a feeling I would like her. The girls are cute.

The Palins, however, are GORGEOUS. They are dripping with it. Earthy, down to earth, real, even-in-dirty jeans-old sweatshirt-bill cap-cleaning a fish gorgeous.

This discussion started out w/ the idea that gay voters might be attracted to Palin because (a) she's an attractive candidate and (b) her views are not really different on issues of concern to gays than those of Obama. I merely pointed out that (b) was inaccurate, i.e., her views on policies that would benefit gays are less favorable than Obama's. I wasn't criticizing her for complying w/ the Alaska constitution.

Odd tidbit:

If the entire population of the United States moved to Alaska, the population density of Alaska would be 464.71 people/square mile.

The population density of New York City is 27,147 people/square mile.

Thus, moving everyone to Alaska would give a pop density that is still 1.71% that of NYC.

What is he supposed to do? He's spoken out against Proposition 8. He's not a California voter, so there's not much more he can do about that. He did mention, briefly, something about equal rights for gays in his acceptance speech, and I don't recall that that topic came up at all at the RNC.

In the end the Dems have had their chance to give gays those rights over the past 40 years. Lip service is all gays have gotten why wouldn't they pick a new direction out of emotion. The fact minorities still vote Dem still amazes me for the same reason.

But that is what Jonathan Alter wants. Lots of interviews, open-ended questions. I don't think he's planning torture.

I don't recall anyone saying or imply that Alter was planning torture. What was described was what Alter wants for Palin. All I'm saying is I'd like to see it applied equally to Obama. So far, I haven't seen a whole lot of evidence that that is going to happen. Recent example of MSM even-handedness: NYTimes on Edwards, NYTimes on Palin's daughter.

They might not have gotten everything they want from gays, but it's not Democrats who have used gay marriage amendments as a way to draw culturally conservative voters to the polls. It will be interesting to see what happens to "Don't ask, don't tell" if Obama is elected.

Something else you need to keep in mind, jmv - there are gays who have other core issues that are more important to them. For example, the people I work with tend to be conservative. The tax plans of Obama alone are enough to send most of us screaming to the Republican ticket.

Gays in the financial field generally have benies for their partners, and they know full well that Obama wants to hit business, double the cap gains tax, and hit companies with a ton o'crap. They will vote against this en masse.

And I still think many people will vote as Michael Moore said:

Ballot:
Barack Obama
War Hero

And as he said (I don't believe I'm quoting him): This ain’t Sweden. War hero wins every time.

The NYT certainly published stories re Edwards once he confessed. The Palins, after all, announced their daughter's pregnancy. They have made her motherhood a central fact of her political identity.

Again, all Alter says is "real interviews with real questions". If Obama hasn't gotten enough of that, you should be writing to Alter or other journalists because he certainly hasn't been hiding. Did you see the O'Reilly interview this evening? If you missed it, you can check out additional segments, which will be on next Mon, Tues, Wed.

My crude response:)

One day, there was an old bull and a young bull talking to each other in the pasture. The young bull looked at the older bull and asked, “Did you hear the farmer is getting another bull?”

This upset the older bull. “Before you got here, I had 120 cows to keep me happy. Then I had to give you 50. Well I am not giving up any more of my cows!”

The younger one thought a minute. “Well, I only have 50 and he wants me to give some up. Forget it.”

Just then the farmer pulled up and unloaded the biggest, meanest and ugliest bull ever created. Frightened, the older bull said, “Well at my age I only need a few cows, so I guess he can have as many as he wants.”

The younger one started stomping and snorting and puffing out his chest. The old bull looked at him in amazement. “Are you nuts? A few cows aren’t worth your life.”

“Cows, hell,” the younger one shouted, “he can have all the cows he wants. I just want to make sure he knows I’m not one of them.

Iraq To Turn Abu Ghraib Into Museum Of Saddam’s Abuse
[Link: patdollard.com...]

The gray, stonewalled prison was one of the darkest symbols of Saddam’s regime—a place where people only suspected of plotting against him would disappear, be tortured and executed without trial.

Former inmates have told of chemical and biological weapons experiments on prisoners, and the execution of hundreds in the 1990s as part of a campaign by Saddam’s son, Qusai, to ease crowding. Others have spoken of tiny isolation cells where political detainees were kept for up to a year without seeing a single person.

But wait. We stripped them naked and put woman's underwear on their heads while flex-cuffed. Then often spanked by clothed American females in that facility.

the simplist thing to understand about his tax policies is that he's going to raise takes on the rich, who aren't paying their share now.

by "the rich", he means anyone who makes a little over $32K/year.

besides: there's nothing accurate on his web page, any more than there is in your posts.

You know, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that some gays would vote for McCain/Palin even knowing that her views on gay marriage are less than favorable. They apparently do find her very attractive, and fashionable, and if there is one gay stereotype that is somewhat valid, it is their fashion sense. And possibly they might find her honesty refreshing. They probably recognize that she cannot hurt their core cause, but she might well be good for them in other areas. Gays tend to be high-income earners. McCain/Palin won't hit their pockets as hard as Obama, and they are plenty smart enough to know that.
