Pakistan's New President

Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 3:07:29 pm PDT

The husband of Benazir Bhutto has been elected Pakistan’s new president.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Benazir Bhutto’s widower swept Pakistan’s presidential election on Saturday, offering hope for stability to a nuclear-armed country feeling intense U.S. pressure to crack down on Islamic militants. ...

Already head of the main ruling party, Asif Ali Zardari becomes one of the most powerful civilian leaders in Pakistan’s turbulent 61-year history. Last month, he marshaled a coalition that forced stalwart U.S. ally Pervez Musharraf to quit as head of state. However, he begins with limited goodwill among a population who recall his nickname, Mr. Ten Percent, for alleged corruption during Bhutto’s two terms in office as prime minister and doubt his political vision and leadership skills.

He is also untested on the international stage, where he must deal with mounting Western concern over how Taliban and al-Qaida militants have nested in the tribal belt along the Afghan border.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she was looking forward to working with Zardari. “I’ve been impressed by some of the things he has said about the challenges that Pakistan faces, about the centrality of fighting terrorism, about the fact that the terrorism fight is Pakistan’s fight and also his very strong words of friendship and alliance with the United States,” Rice told reporters on a trip to North Africa.

The encouraging thing in all of this is that the war with AQ and the Taliban against Pakistan now is real, and PPP can't back down and make peace the way Mushy tried. The emnity goes back too far, and they've figured out that AQ and Baitullah are head hunting; it's now a "kill them before they kill us" situation.

The US will have to work with this man as this state has the greatest potential to harm US interests, or fall into terrorist/jihadist hands.

The future is wide open and interesting.

An Islamic state (first modern state) viewed as an infidel puppet will cause a real problem among conservative/traditional elements in the region.

Yeah. Not being as up-to-date on them as you, I was wondering if the voters would balk at Zardani himself. After all, the son was installed as titular head of the party after his mother's assassination. 10% stayed (kind of officially) in the background.

Actually the great urban masses of Pakistan in the Punjab and the Sindh are pretty much better educated than most of the subcontinent. Most of them speak two to four languages (Urdu, English, Farsi, Daru etc.)

In the frontiers and among the very poor you have a different story with Saudi Wahabbist education being the indoctrination mill of last resort.

59 eon  Sat, Sep 6, 2008 3:51:50pm

Having lost his wife to assassination courtesy of the radical Islamists, Zardari should at least have a realistic view of what their victory would mean to Pakistan. Best guess- a renewed war with India in the name of "Islamic brotherhood", probably culminating in a nuclear exchange. Not to mention AQ and/or the Taliban getting a 10-15KT "orange" in their Christmas stocking, with the tag saying, "From The New Rulers of Pakistan- Please Deliver To The Great Satan on Our Behalf."

It is very unlikely that Pakistan would survive either possibility. Zardari most likely understands this- and also understands that he is facing an enemy with whom compromise or accommodation equals baring your throat for the knife.

If he's smart, his first step will be a general house-cleaning in the military and the civil government to get the Islamist sympathizers and hangers-on out. (Look for the MSM to portray this as the equivalent of McCarthyism, with some Tammany Hall thrown in.)

After that, he has to fight- and win- the war that his predecessor (Musharraf) tried to deny even existed. To attempt to placate those very elements most desirous of overthrowing him. I always considered him at best a weak reed, and at worst someone trying to keep a foot in each camp. As Len Deighton's Man from Burnley once said, you do that and in the end, they build the barbed wire right through you.

This will be interesting to watch. How much we can do other than watch, however, is open to question.

cheers

ISI ‘number one’ accused in Bhutto assassination

Pakistan's powerful intelligence service, the ISI, is the "number one accused" in the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, a senior Britain-based leader of her party has said.

"ISI is number one accused for the murder of Ms Bhutto, Pakistan's great leader," Amanullah Khan, a leader of the Pakistan People's Party, said on Wednesday night.

"Her assassination is calculated. Her killing is a fascist act and ISI and CIA should shoulder responsibility for her assassination," Khan said at a condolence meeting organised by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Third-World Solidarity at the Boothroyd Room of House of Commons.

Very OT

I have a question.
If Obama's people are doing a lot of registering of voters:
A. How many will actually vote?
B. How many will vote Dem?
C. How many has he registered (alive ones that is)?

I know of at least one staunch Republican who registered Democrat so that she could vote against Hillary in the primary by voting for Obama. I also know that she will vote for McCain in November. She's my mom.

I suspect that the surge in registered Democrats is not indicative of the number of vote for Obama in the general election.

re: #17 Pent.

A fellow George R.R. Martin reader! *high five*

To be honest, I quit in the middle of the fourth book. Bad enough that the characters I most like are continually murdered/otherwise ground into the dirt on a near-constant basis - but when I find they aren't even the characters I rooted for anymore (see: Arya)? Yeah, that's the last straw.

If I ever catch whiffs of talk that Daenerys is a Mary Sue, only then will I come back to the series. Because if a Mary Sue breaks the established laws of the series, the one law of Westeros is nobody ever gets to accomplish anything worthwhile with their life - and Daenerys is the only one with a prayer of doing so.

The state dept liked BB because they thought that she could refocus the jihadis soley on Kashmir instead of Afghanistan. Wonderful.

He is at best a thief, at worst insane.

Then the biggest differences between him and Islam's founder are that:

a. he has not had sexual relations with a 9 year old girl whom he "married" three years earlier.
b. he had an educated wife whom he did not beat.
c. he never married his step son's wife.

He therefore cannot be as great a calamity as we fear. Let us wish him a long and prosperous life.
