Editor’s Notes: The secret war with Iran

6 lawhawk  Sat, Sep 6, 2008 8:34:58pm

HuffPo reports that the McCain campaign is lying about the flags and that the DNC handled the flags appropriately.

But according to a senior official involved in organizing the Democratic convention, the McCain camp is simply lying about the flags.

"All of the flags at Invesco were picked up and put in bags and into storage, along with the unused flags and campaign signs. The flags were going to be donated, and the signs were going to be sent out to be used elsewhere," the official said, speaking anonymously since he was not authorized to talk to the press.

Fox News' Carl Cameron and Bonney Kapp reported that they had "been told" that "a vendor at Invesco Field found the flags, which were going to be thrown out, and turned them over to the McCain campaign."

Curious that no one is going on the record with that, instead opting for the anonymous quote. Nice.

Still, more important issues to deal with - like how to get further inside Obama's OODA loop. While his minions are trying to come up with the latest Palin smear, McCain needs to pop on energy or the economy.

Overrate ’68 by Daniel Flynn, City Journal 26 August 2008

And Bill Ayers writes in his memoir, Fugitive Days, of Hayden’s altered persona when addressing closed audiences of radicals:

His voice took on an edge, somewhere between fanatical and giddy, as he described bold plans and playful pranks. But you folks—veterans of the movement and the streets—have a pivotal role to play in all of this, he continued, the color of his face deepening, his eyes once again blazing. He looked intently from person to person. He was the same articulate and thoughtful speaker as before, but these were words for only a few. This demonstration has the potential like nothing we’ve done before to expose the face of the enemy, to strip him naked, to force him to reveal himself as violent, brutal, totalitarian, and evil. It will be difficult—and dangerous—taunting the monster, stabbing him in his most exposed and vulnerable places, but it’s got to be done. And he paused. And you’re the ones to do it.

Wow. Tom Hayden sounds like a lunatic.

From the secret war with Iran link:

A few weeks ago, the White House took the unusual step of issuing a specific denial of a report on Army Radio, picked up by the Post, which claimed that a Bush official recently told his Israeli counterparts that the president is planning to strike Iran's nuclear facilities before leaving office. Only this week, a newspaper in The Netherlands claimed that Dutch intelligence has abruptly halted an "extremely successful" ongoing operation to sabotage Iran's nuclear program because of an assessment that such an American strike is indeed just weeks away.

If only. But I could see Bush ordering a take out of Iran's military capabilites to enable Israel to get at Iran's nuclear program, or take it out ourselves if Obama is elected, almost anytime between the election and the end of this year. No more than 3 weeks tops to neuter Iran militarily.

It the RNC took the flags as the DNC stated, then they should file a police report and let the LEOs handle it. That would however boomerang big time if the facts are not EXACTLY as the DNC claims. Far easier (and safer) for them to handle it with innuendo and anonymous quotes.

From the Melanie Phillips article..

The woman is a natural. Watch her performance last night here -- and you'll see why the left is in such a panic.

I was at a family party today and was subjected to some truly irrational anti-Palin nonsense about how all she did was read a well written speech. Ha. I pointed out to the person who said that for the last 8 years all we heard is that George W Bush is such a terrible speaker and now the GOP has a great speaker and all you can say is that it was a well written speech. The irrationality runs strong in this bunch.

Then I asked at what point in the Bush administration would you have done something different and where would that leave us right now. If war with Iraq was such a bad idea then what you you be doing right now seeing as Saddam would still be in power buying off UN officials and sending money to families of suicide bombers. No response.

And thats the point. The moonbats want to compare the Bush record against a Utopian vision, but not against an alternative reality had they been in charge. When you point that out to them, they got nuthin.

USF sets aside oasis for prayer - St. Petersburg Times

Garry Miller, president of the Campus Ministry Association, described the Serenity Room as a place where all students can come for quiet reflection and prayer, a space where they can "chill and have a moment."

"It's simple, it's quiet, it's away from all the busyness," Miller said. "It's just a come-as-you-are, no-reservations-necessary place."

Jennifer Hernandez, operations manager for the student center, expects that members of many of the university's religious-based student groups, from Christian to Baha'i, will make use of the room once they find out about it.

Why do I think that this probably won't happen? And if it does, the Muslim students will put a stop to it in short order? Oh yeah, because they have been known to take over regular, religiously neutral "prayer rooms" and throw people out; why would they let infidels come into crescent moon-shaped prayer rooms made specifically for Muslims?

Me too the POTUS in the movie is a MOH recipient, Helicopter Pilot and pretty much starts with this quote.

Never again will I allow our political self-interest to deter us from doing what we know to be morally right. Atrocity and terror are not political weapons. And to those who would use them, your day is over. We will never negotiate. We will no longer tolerate and we will no longer be afraid. It's your turn to be afraid.

Hello, all Lizards!

Been out celebrating... today is the big 4-2! :)

As a lot of you know, I was born with a Congenital Heart Defect and they didn't give me much of a chance.... but I'm still here!

Truth be told, I noticed that heart was broken when I took it out of the box, and I really should have mailed it back while it was still under warranty. But dad-gummit, I lost the receipt!

Every day, I get out of bed and say "Today, I am going to feel like Superman!" And I usually do... sometimes I feel like getting out the big Red Cape and fighting crime, and other days I feel like FedEx just delivered a box full of Kryptonite! But remember, any day that no one ties a tag to your toe is a GOOD day!

I've spent most of today having fun, and now it is time for me to turn back into The Lizard Who Takes Care of his Heart and haul my tired butt to bed. It's been a GREAT day here, and I hope you can say the same!

What we need is a group that will stand up to such tactics. One that will react to attempts to throw them out with equal force. Alas, that is unlikely. Anyone resisting them in such a way would be attacked by the media and would suffer for it. I would not have had the will to do that when I was in college. I'd just avoid the situation. I know that's pathetic, but I know what I would have done.

I would say the chances are better that Israel will get the "green light" to Go before January if BO wins the election so they can get it done before the anointed one takes office.

If McCain wins (and I think he has got it) then I think the Israelis will hold and let him handle it. Either way, I believe Natanz will be toast within the next six months.

Not to mention that she had to do the same thing several times as a mayor.
I doubt if Obama even figures out his own Senate Office budget.

I remember way back in the day when I was in College, I got in many arguments with the smelly losers in the Worker's Party who were handing out pamphlets. My favorite tactic was to ask for a pamphlet and then rip it up in front of them.

I had my share of arguments with them too. Lefty losers are easy enough to get to look foolish (because they are already fools). The Islamists are a different kettle of fish. They're not impressed by anything of ours save main force. The key to confronting them is possess both the force to stop them and the will to use it.

Happy Birthday, Steve...and many more! Congrats and take care of that heart.

If Israel is going to do it, it will be done before Inauguration Day regardless of who wins the election. Why saddle a friend (McCain) with the onus of having to defend the action, even though it should not require explanation. It's easier if everyone can just blame Bush. It's enough that the next president will have to deal with the aftermath.

If the US does it, it won't be because Bush wants to spare Israel. I don't believe political leaders think that way. If the US does it, it will be because we can do it more thoroughly, comprehensively, and terminally than Israel can alone.

Increasingly though, regardless of who gets lead billing, I think this will be a joint operation.

Because they must have angst.
They have not been taught that you will have adversity in life, and it is how you deal with that adversity that makes you who you are.

Their life view is that adversity must be met and dealt with by someone else.

Another thing I have noticed, especially with the koskids is that they want what others have without making any effort to attain it.

They rail against the "rich", of which according to Obama I am one, and do not see all the hard word, long hours and sacrifice that it took to get here.

They see the house I have now, not the 3 bedroom single wide trailer I lived in and raised 3 kids in for 8 years, while starting our own business.

They see the nice car or jewelry, not the 15 hour days my husband works in order to make our business a success.

They see the successfull business, not the incredible chance we took at age 40 to start this business.

They want given to them what others have earned!

Because they see it as "not fair". And that is all they see.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Barack Obama took his first direct swipe at Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin on Saturday, criticizing her for supporting congressional earmarks before opposing them.

“I know the governor of Alaska has been, you know, saying she is change,” Obama said at a town hall meeting here. “And that is great. She is a skillful politician. But when you [have] been taking all these earmarks when it is convenient and then suddenly you are the champion anti-earmark person.

“That is not change, come on,” Obama continued. “I mean, words mean something. You can’t just make stuff up. You can’t just make stuff up. We have a choice to make and the choice is clear.”

Doncha know that the elites of the Left Party know what's best for all of us - even if they have no effin' idea of how to operate, say, a farm, or an oil refinary, or a hardware store or................you get the idea.
They believe that all of us in "flyover" country should do what they say (not necessarily what they DO) because they are so superior to us intellectually.
I think a major reason why they are always stepping in shit is because they are too busy looking down their noses at us to watch where they're going!

There is a tide of lefist people all of a sudden thinking women shouldn't hold high office if they have school age children.

Huh.

It won't matter who (visibly) performs the attack.
Iran will revenge itself on both the US and Israel, specifics depending mostly on its own capabilities.

in point of fact, there are a number of us who think an (undeclared) state of war has existed with Iran since 1979 when Iran tresspassed upon our internationally recognized soil (our embassy) and held our 54 people hostage for 444 days. Not to mention their arming and training Hezbollah for the attacks on the Marine Corps. barracks in Lebannon in 1983, and not to mention they're arming, training and occassionally going into Iraq to lead the "freedom fighters" to kill American Troops.

Melanie Phillips makes a mistake in her claim that ID claims only that life was originally created by the action of some intelligence. ID, as propounded by the Discovery Institute, claims that the various later major branchings in the tree of life were also the work of some intelligence.

The funny thing is, in a very strange way, they're right. Distributed intelligence gets the answer without any one mind knowing how it all goes. There doesn't even have to be a mind anywhere. Anthills are a simple example of distributed intelligence.

Now, make a big stretch. The whole of life is a kind of distributed intelligence, finding answers to the central question that life asks: how to be fruitful and multiply?

But that's not what the DI and ID'ers in general have in mind.

Given the number of targets and the cost of the Predator, I'm guessing there has to be some prioritization, and Predator would be used for identifying/ hitting mobile targets, but as you say, might be good tactic to send Predators in first to degrade their anti-aircraft radar, thus making it safer for subsequent waves of bombers.

1. ballistic missiles,
2. special 2,000+ lb bombs from long range bombers, or

None of the above will work. A systematic destruction of Iran's nuclear weapons program, much of which figures to be well hidden and currently unkown to our intelligence, would require a lot of boots on the ground. Commando raids would fail because the places that are open knowledge are surely protected by large garrisons. Commandos can work wonders, but at some point, it becomes Buth Cassidy&Sundance Kid vs. the entire Bolivian Army. The U.S. got a taste of that in Mogadishu, and though the Iranian military may not be top drawer, it's better than Somali warlord militias.

Long range bombers might be able to deliver some munitions on target, but Iran apparently (according to the link Secret War with Iran, headlined in this very thread), has a quantity of modern air defense assets. There's also the likelihood that the underground bunkers are so deep that even bunker-buster bombs won't reach, or if they do, the damage will be contained by blast doors etc. underground.

With all this, the question of what is to be done has no easy answer.

Now is the time! (203+ / 0-)

As Paul Begala says, it is not how you strike back, it's how you strike first!

Now is the time. In my opinion Barack Obama himself should - with extensive TV coverage - march into the Denver Police Department to file a report and a criminal complaint of theft. He should allege that the McCain campaign or otherwise persons unknown stole his American flags, desecrated them, called them garbage, and tried to use them for campaign purposes. He should allege that these flags were carefully bundled for continued use at other events, and that theft of items from one campaign to another is a new low and demonstrates that the McCain campaign is bankrupt of ideas for the nation and will not shy away from criminal activity and lies."
The police report should then be distributed to the media. Put the onus on the other side. Show some guts for a change!

This needs to be done because if Obama does not do this, they will haul the bags of flags onto a stage - again, with TV coverage - and declare that they are "rescuing" American flags from being desecrated, and this will not be good for the Obama campaign.

OMG this is too frikken funny!

Remember, the US is the "Great Satan", while Israel is only the "Little Satan". The US is also a target for Iranian nukes, although they'd have to be delivered via container ship or something, not by missile.

Their most conventional retaliation would be missile attacks on Israel from Lebanon (with increasing capability from Gaza), possibly missile attacks on allied positions in Iraq, but Iran is a terrorist nation and much of their retaliation will not be conventional. They are already evaluating extensive kidnappings of Israelis overseas and might do similar things to Americans.

These sorts of things, however hostile, are unlikely to provoke obliteration of the Iranian nation.

Right now we don't have drones of any type that could carry the weapons needed to get to the underground bunkers and destroy Iran's centerfuges and other scientific material, but we really don't have to do that; all we have to do is blow up enough that no one can get in..........or out.
And when they try to re-open the tunnels, close 'em up again.
But I still think you'd need WAY more armament than any of our current drones carry for that. A few Tomahawk missles OTOH, yes, we could do it all.

i bet Iran could be shut down without dropping bombs, who knows what a massive information attack would do.

Thats what would scare me if i were Iran and Syria, what good is a SAM if your power stations are knocked offline by zombie bots.

I disagree, cyber attacks are good for temporary disruption. Making large holes in infrastructure and nuclear facilities is another matter. However the nuclear centrifuge cascade is a different item altogether, and a cyber attack could easily destroy the entire cascade.

The AF began a program 18 months ago to design and build large bomb shackles capable of like 30 tons to support heavy penetrators in the B-2 stealth bomber. Iran can bluster and talk BS all she wants, but the facts are the US can shut down Iran whenever we get the balls.
/McCain is not another Bush!

We've been working on super penetrating bombs. Add in the small nuke, kt range or less and some serious deep bunker busting is an option.

The small nuke is a sticky wicket, but if it goes off deep and never has significant release into the atmosphere it may be doable from a political stand point.

He should allege that the McCain campaign or otherwise persons unknown stole his American flagsThunder , desecrated them my lock on the MSM, called them garbage , and tried to use them for campaign purposes. He should allege that these flags were My image was carefully bundled for continued use at other events, and that theft of items from one campaign to another is a new low and demonstrates that the McCain campaign is bankrupt of ideas for the nation and will not shy away from criminal activity and lies."

re: #230 transient

Their most conventional retaliation would be missile attacks on Israel from Lebanon (with increasing capability from Gaza), possibly missile attacks on allied positions in Iraq, but Iran is a terrorist nation and much of their retaliation will not be conventional. They are already evaluating extensive kidnappings of Israelis overseas and might do similar things to Americans.

These sorts of things, however hostile, are unlikely to provoke obliteration of the Iranian nation.

If attacked, Iran would be expected to use its proxy Hizb'Allah in a series of terrorist attacks against American and Israeli interests all over the globe (potentially even within the USA).

We're talking kidnappings, car bombs, assassinations, that sort of thing.

How effective it would be remains to be seen, but none of these things would really undermine an American or Israeli (or joint) attack.

With all due respect,

There's also the likelihood that the underground bunkers are so deep that even bunker-buster bombs won't reach, or if they do, the damage will be contained by blast doors etc. underground.

is not necessary. See my #234. All we have to do is make sure Iran can't get into those tunnels or out of them; and I think our satellite imagery going back for a few years or so, has enabled us to determine where all the tunnels are located, though the Irans, if they were smart, built lots of phony tunnels as well. SO we destroy ALL THE TUNNELS we know about and watch what Iran tries to dig down to, then hit 'em with the so called "Super Bunker Buster Bomb".
End of game, end of war, end of Iraq as any kind of military power (cause we'd have to take out their Command and Control, Anti-Aircraft missile and gun defenses, "navy" and Air Force, drop a few hundered 500 pound bombs on the vaunted Revolutionary Guard and hell, even Kuwaitt could take Iran militarily).

how about a different approach, take out the mullah's and dinner jacket, the high military command and their nuclear scientists.

Check the article, the Secret War with Iran, linked at the top. According to the book, the Israelis and/or the US has been operating for years and has killed personnel involved in Iran's nuclear project, and sabotaged some of the parts. It's slowed down the project, but not stopped it.

(Aside: How is it possible that one government agency was actively targeting a project it knew was active, while another issues a report stating the project stopped in 2003? ...Nevermind....)

Re: assassinations: never as easy as it sounds when you are targeting paranoid types who know they are targets. Otherwise we, or the Israelis, would have killed Saddam Hussein on the first day of the war if not long before. You'd have to kill a lot of people to have a good chance of eliminating the Iranian regime (and if you succeeded, there's currently nothing to take over).

re: #211 lostlakehiker

My suspicion is that in a regime like Iran's the most efficient way to destroy an underground facility is to use a small special forces team to get the bomb inserted into the target. Different approaches will be needed for each target in the distributed network. Some will be best attacked with conventional airpower.

The Iranians have worked hard at both complicating our targeting and creating a rigid security system. To some extent these two approaches are contradictory. Also I am counting on the phenomenon that in highly authoritarian organizations the more that formal security is increased the more porous the system becomes. To some extent that can even happen in America and the dissolving of the Strategic Air Command has proven to be a security nightmare. In Iran it may be possible to penetrate their most secure locations. If they read this and attempt to make procedures even more rigid and triple secure then they will only compound their problem.

Agreed that an initial strike does not end the problem. We cannot eliminate this threat with an initial attack. That means we do not need to achieve 100% success. We can at best delay and damage the Iranian effort. If anyone believes that a surgical strike or some movie action by James Bond will solve the problem then they are in for bitter disappointment. Once we hit them we will have to coerce them into a formal surrender with the entire program exposed and destroyed. As North Korea has demonstrated signing an agreement based on trust and bribery will not work.

Yeah, I think it will require multiple sorties, and I don't think Israel is capable of doing numerous sorties over that distance, or keeping the buildings shut down. Which is why I'd rather see the US do it.

It seems as though there is a massive disinformation campaign underway between the US and Israel to keep everyone guessing who is going to do the deed, and when. The Israelis say the US will do it (while they conduct drills that look suspiciously like a long range flight and attack), and the US has different people saying we aren't going to do it, Israel's going to do it, Israel's not going to do it, we are pressuring Israel not to do it.

Well, that last link is a bundle of cheer, isn't it:

As Bergman writes in a sober concluding chapter, "Iran and Hizbullah are more sophisticated, effective and determined adversaries than Israel and the United States have previously encountered in the Middle East. These new enemies, the Shi'ites of Iran and Lebanon, have repeatedly outwitted Israel and the West, beating them across the board in politics, in intelligence gathering and in war."

Now Iran is on the brink of attaining the ultimate tool for expanding the Islamic Revolution, the nuclear bomb, and still the international community hesitates and bickers and even undermines its own ineffectual trade sanctions.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

but Iran is a terrorist nation and much of their retaliation will not be conventional. They are already evaluating extensive kidnappings of Israelis overseas and might do similar things to Americans.

However, kiddnappings and such can be prevented through conventional methods. If Iran were to try to use WMD - poison gas, bacterial warfare, dirty bombs on US Forces in Iraq or ship a dirty bomb over here and destroy a large US city then I do indeed think that would be the end of Iran.
And, btw, I don't know if you were here when a poster named "reaganite" was here, but he was in charge of one of the USAF "bomb disposal units" and
in addition to working with the USSS to protect presidents, knew more about bombs than any man I've ever had the privilige of breaking bread with. He assured me - and assured all of us out here, that all bombs, from roadside IED's to dirty nuke weapons to nuclear warheads leave a telltale "fingerprint" (or maybe it was "footprint") so that true experts could tell who constructed it and who provided the material IN it. I believe him completely on that; if Iran tries any sort of direct retaliation on US Troops or on the US itself, that would indeed be the end of Iran.

Today I went to a moonbat music festival in Golden Gate Park called Power to the Peaceful. Zombie documented it last year I believe. A beautiful warm sunny day -- rare out there near the ocean -- brought out tens of thousands. Lots of lunatic left booths, lunatic speakers between sets (including Susie "Medea" Benjamin crowing about getting inside the RNC), and a quite prominent presence of troothers. And, surprisingly, very little in the way of "green" action. Much harder-edged than the Earth Day shindigs, or last year's Summer of Love anniversary. I will have pics to share in a day or two.

One thing that stood out is that a couple Palin smears got the most cheers of the non-musical portions, more so than the mention of Obama's name. One of the brief speakers was a "community organizer" whose organization ostensibly helps gang members in the Mission District move away from violence, drugs, etc. But it was clear that what this organization is doing is trying to politicize the gangs for possible use as revolutionary shock troops.

The musical acts were Warren Haynes solo acoustic (Gov't Mule, Allman Bros, at times Phil Lesh and Friends and The Dead, an elder in the overall "jamband" scene, Ziggy Marley (sounds just like his dad), and the headliner/organizer, Michael Franti (moonbat peacenik extraordinaire) with an expanded version of his band Spearhead.

i think the F22 is amazing, but if u leave them in a glass jar their not doing much good, i know america needs them to fight Iron Man and Transfomers and assorted aliens but they could actually be useful in the real world as well.

First order of business is to blind and defang air defense. We've got all the main radar sites mapped, it's pretty straight forward. Stealth in zap the main radar, take out the C&C. So all the missiles batteries are now operating independently. Then work them over. That has the added benefit if leaving the Iran AF blind and launching fighters into the unknown.

Uh, well the F-16 SuperHornets can, but the F-22 Raptor really is the "air superiority fighter" these days.
Regrettably, we are retiring the F-15's even though the ONLY LOSSES the F-15's incurred was in the mock airfights agains the F-22's. We are retiring a jet fighter that no other nations' fighters has been able to best in real aerial combat. Ever. And we're retiring them.
We need not fear the Russians or the Iranians or both of them with conventional forces, not even a little bit.

re: #211 lostlakehiker

Kill Ahmedinejad and everyone close to him. Cut the head off the snake. At the same time, strike known sites, and interdict heavily around any place that looks like one. Nobody gets in or out. They can't make a bomb if they die trying to get to work.

I think we ought to be working with Iranian dissidents to build (as much as possible) an entire parallel government for Iran, as part and parcel of the efforts to halt their program. Iran ceases to be a threat when the threatening types are dead or in prison. We know this from Iraq.

Do you have a link to that; I've always thought that if US citizens give birth to a child in a US Embassy anywhere, then the child is a US Citizen. And I'd appreciate the link about it not being sovereign territory also.

Was recently rather extensively trained on just this point. The child of US citizen mother is a citizen by jus sanguinis. To some extent this depends on when the person was born as the law has changed repeatedly over the last century. For example both Obama and McCain are citizens no matter where they were born. The question of eligibility for the Presidency has to due with the concept of "natural born" which goes to the concept of jus solis. We are assuming that Obama was born in Hawaii and that McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone while his father was there on orders. Both qualify although some people will try to dispute it. They are entitled to a day in court.

Interesting e-mail from my sister (NOT the moonbat one.)

She was at some pro-life election workshop today where the speaker was showing them poll results about the issue. It seems that c. 20% of "likely voters" believe Obama is opposed to abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or saving the life of the mother. Another c.30% believe he approves of it only in the first trimester. About 48% don't know. And only 10% know he supports abortion on demand all the way through 9 mos.

Geepers! I don't think our media does a very good job of informing people.

There's the same kind of gap w/ regard to McCain. I read not too long ago that about 50% of those surveyed believed McCain is pro-choice, which, of course, he's not. Palin's strong views will take away whatever advantage that might have given him, although that loss may be offset by people who are drawn to her.

It might look like an F22 but it has less than half its performance. And for 80 million a plane it seems very expensive.

Like alot of other projects it seems to have been built to fight a war that will never happen, one where having an all stealth airforce is paramount, and even then i doubt its stealth capabilities. The internal bomb configuration seems like overkill as well for a multirole plane.

I'm not sure if I should advertise this on the Internet, but I actually had a hand in putting GPS on the Tomahawk. [Seriously.] Back then I used to watch those awesome F-15s take off on my way to and from work.

...and come up with a wild vision of what the next 4 years could have in store for us if O'bama wins...well, am I being paranoid ? The dots are all there but they seem too fantastic to put all together into one big conspiracy.
On the other hand - tell me, after being blindsided on 9/11, that these can't all be related and equal one big massive plot to steal America right out from under our noses ? I really want to believe that no American running for the office of POTUS could really be so devious. I do not like conspiracy theories and never listen to them. I usually think the average person is basically decent and don't go for outlandish stories about an opponent simply because it works against the opponent. But, am I not to believe my eyes ? I really do want to be told "you're way off - nothing here, go to bed"
but after reading these all today I can't come up with any other conclusion. Of course there is more reading to do. I'm just praying someone will stick a giant pin in the balloon and make it all disappear with one simple fact
(or two) that I haven't considered so I can sleep comfortably tomorrow night. Anyone ?

I must be one of about 3 people who actually liked that movie. Including the shoebox ship and the beachball alien.

Sgt. Pinback vs. the "beachball".

Those scenes were filmed in the basement of the USC film school.

HuffPo reports that the McCain campaign is lying about the flags and that the DNC handled the flags appropriately.

According to the anonymous source:

"All of the flags at Invesco were picked up and put in bags and into storage, along with the unused flags and campaign signs. The flags were going to be donated, and the signs were going to be sent out to be used elsewhere," the official said, speaking anonymously since he was not authorized to talk to the press.

Were they planning on donating the trash that was mixed in with the flags as well?

re: #322 realwest

Ah my friend, there is a NEW Belleau Wood and indeed, there are, iirc, something like 8 glistening new Marine Amphibious AirCraft carriers, each one capable of carrying a full Marine Corps. Brigade with all it's equipment, but also chock a block with attack helicopters, large troop transport helicopters and some Harrier Jump Jets for close in air support. LGFer
Village Idiot's Apprentice left on one of 'em about a year or so ago, though I beleive he's now be re-ordered to another type of ship.

Thanks for getting to this before I did. There were 5 LHAs, 3 are left, the Belleau Wood sleeps with the fishes. In addition we have the LHDs now. They can each carry a Marine Battalion Landing Team (not a Brigade), a mixed air unit that can include AV8s, Cobras, Ospreys and transport, and a HQ component. The Naval medical and command facilities are extensive. The old LHA originally had three 5" guns that have since been removed. There were other experimental ideas tried in them, some worked some didn't. The climate acclimatization system was useless, that space became a huge weight room. Ships travel slow enough that the marines will get used to the weather where they are going anyways. The new LHDs can carry two of the air cushion landing craft.

I can remember these tests being release in the '80's of the TLAM. Especially he detonation over the aircraft target. And thinking it really upset the strategic balance, that degree of accuracy.

I wasn't in the military, if that's what you mean, but like to think of myself as a former "Cold Warrior" in the civilian sense. All the skill and bravery in the world isn't going to win the day if you're fighting with squirt guns!

That being said, I'm sure the superior pilots and training are no small part of the F-15s incredible record.

Curious that no one is going on the record with that, instead opting for the anonymous quote. Nice.

Still, more important issues to deal with - like how to get further inside Obama's OODA loop. While his minions are trying to come up with the latest Palin smear, McCain needs to pop on energy or the economy.

Screw Huffpo, The KosKids, and the frigging jackass they rode in on.
