Tech Note: Comment Ratings Now Reversible

Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 12:27:18 pm PDT

A very common complaint I receive about the comment rating system is that people accidentally hit the wrong button—resulting in a plus where they intended a minus, or vice versa.

So now, after clicking the plus or minus button, the opposite button will still be active and clicking it will reverse your rating. And then all’s right with the world.

UPDATE at 9/7/08 3:48:19 pm:

Ratings for front page posts (like this one) are also now reversible.

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

You are too good to us, Charles. Thank you.

2 HelloDare  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:28:40pm

I give that a big minus, no, wait, I mean a plus.

3 schultzw  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:28:53pm

So if we mistakenly rate a post, it can be sent down the memory hole?

4 godfrey  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:28:55pm

Has this been tested? What if we reverse too many, and a black hole results?

5 Shug  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:29:11pm

I voted for that comment......before I voted against it

Thank you Charles -

Now can you get totals on the Recent Comments view? My vanity and laziness have intersected and I need someone else to do the work for me ;)

8 Chip Designer  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:29:39pm

This is good.

I only click comments I feel strongly about.
It is embarrassing to have a bad click, and be forever linked as being approving of something you disapprove of. Or vice versa.

9 Carl in Jerusalem  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:30:15pm

Thanks Charles.

Is there any way you can fix it so we can revise spinoff links after we post them (even if it's only for a limited time)?

re: #4 godfrey

Well- I've been testing with you. When I click minus, you go to minus 1, but when I click plus, you go to zero.

11 BlueCanuck  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:30:23pm

hmmmm.... I up dinged Sharmuta in comment #1, then I down dinged her because (of course) she didn't deserve an up-ding. Then, I dinged her up again because I will do (nearly) anything to get babes to like me.... and when I did, the "up-ding" tally that showed on my screen is "2", not "1".

34 godfrey  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:35:57pm

And if you're really confused, you can ding down and up and back again. The tally becomes a rolling average. We could see a post's popularity fluctuate like a VU meter.

35 jorline  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:36:10pm

Worked for godfrey on buss's post.

40 spidly  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 12:36:55pm

if you accidentally click, you can only negate your accident rather than give the rating you wanted i.e. if I accidentally click - then I can only get back to zero by adding a +, but I cannot give the positive rating I meant to. need to keep + button active for two clicks, or add a neutral button, or make the + worth two if the - were clicked.

Human-pig chimera will save you life.....
Lord Winston to farm pigs for transplants

Lord Winston, the fertility expert and Labour peer, is to begin breeding genetically modified pigs in the next three months to produce hearts, livers and kidneys for transplanting to humans.

Winston has pioneered a simplified technique to create pigs with “humanised” organs that will not be rejected by the patients’ immune systems.

He expects the technique to provide a solution to the shortage of donor organs within 10 years.
...
The pigs will be bred with about six human genes to prevent patients rejecting their organs.

Science!

re: #103 buzzdroid

there might be a bug with this.

when i hit a minus , it goes down by TWO points, not one.

I think one point is to negate the initial ding, and one is to take it in the opposite direction. So if I gave you a plus but meant to whack you, the comment reversal would take away the plus and give you a negative.

Report: UN to demand Israel pay Lebanon $1 billion in reparations

The United Nations will require Israel to pay Lebanon nearly $1 billion for environmental damages caused during the 2006 Second Lebanon War, the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported on Saturday.

The paper said that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will submit the motion to the Security Council later this month.

This is class warfare, those with up-dings just keep getting up-dinged. I submit a luxury tax on up-dings over the average up-ding income of 50%. If you are a crass hoarder of up-dings above, lets say 5, you must donate those up-dings so I can redistribute the up-dings to those who won't or cant work for need them more. Of course 80% of the tax will be retained by myself for operational costs.

Yes -- minus at first, then later changed to plus.

HUH!
You're STILL showing as a minus, and I even did a page-refresh.
Have you reversed your down-ding?

Well, all we reached was -1 for comment #209 -- two down-dings and one up-ding (?!?).

OK, that was pathetic. But now, the second half of the experiment: everybody (all two of us) reverse your ratings to up!

Just wanted to BT (back thread) to a previous one today that looks dead. This is the comment by Obama that he had to register in 1979. It is categorically BS. I graduated from high school in 1974. In those days you registered when you were 17 which happened to be the summer going into my senior year. It turned out to be the year that Nixon suspended the draft to see if the volunteer army would suffice. They were going to go through all the motions just in case it had to be fired back up. I remember staying up late, getting drunk with my buddies and watching the secretary of defense do the lottery. Just so happened that my birthday was picked 2nd......so I had to sweat out the entire year hoping and hoping that the draft wouldn't be re instituted. It wasn't and I finished my senior year went off to college and then ended up enlisting (officer hacks) anyway but it was on my terms and I was able to get a direct assignment (after boot camp) to the Army language school in Monterrey to learn Russian.

The following year they stopped requiring selective service sign up all together and I remember being annoyed.

The requirement to register for selective service by their 18th birthday was re-instated for all males born on or after January 1, 1960.   Obama was born in '61, so he would have been required to register in 1979.

Just realized I needed to add or subtract TWO from the total when a rating is reversed, so if it wasn't working as you expected, that's why. Should be cool now.

Doesn't seem we have the option to "unrate" though... like, if we clicked the wrong comment and we had no opinion either way, it'd be nice to be able to just eliminate the rating entirely.

Any chance of making the inactive button into a "zero" button instead, to get rid of your vote entirely?

So he bull some story out of his ass about his buddies and him. The funniest part of his statement is he made it sound like he did not join because we were not at war. Like if we had been he would have been right there to enlist.
I am the same age as Obama in fact just a couple of weeks older. I not only remember registering I also remember that when I did enlist in the Navy in Oct of 80 it was a real possibility that we would be going to war when Reagan was elected.

Watch it! Uncle Sam's canoe club. I was off the coast of Iran when they made folks start registering for the draft. We were there from March of 1980 till frakkin' September. I will never forgive the Mad Mullahs for that. We were supposed to go to Perth and didn't go anywhere unless you count Diego Garcia as somewhere. South of the equator. British base, nothing there. Highest point above sea level 33 feet. 2000 miles west to Australia, about the same distance south to Antartica, same to Africa to the west and India about the same 2k to the north. Middle of the Indian Ocean.

Yeah ... at the beginning of our '64 cruise, we were looking forward to Singapore or Australia.

I don't believe in burning books, even "bad" ones. If they are good for nothing else, they serve as an object lesson in bad writing or bad lessons. Books such as Mein Kampf and Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid show us the thought process of the authors and their philosophies.

Banning or burning books is a slippery slope. In most cases objectivity is not used and books are banned or burned strictly on personal biases, such as Tom Sawyer which people wanted to ban because of a racial slur found in it. Strangely enough, the people that wanted Tom Sawyer banned because of the slur wanted the children to read other books that had the same word in it but in different context.

Purely subjective and a slippery slope indeed.

"the US threw him out on his ass after one term."

The problem is Jimmah is getting a bit senile, and his forgetting how much America hated him. He oughta be given a reminder.

Jimmy has an overinflated self-esteem and ego issues. Bill Clinton was infuriated when Carter came up with his personal treaty with NK that allowed them to build nukes. One of my school mates works at the Carter library and our last reunion was held there. Food was lousy but the friends were good!

I like how the Dems paraded him out at the convention but wouldn't let him talk.

I heard they would not let him talk, but since I had no interest in seeing the Politburo meet, I did not watch any of it. I do remember when Kerry reported for duty that he had a prominent box seat and fat ass Micheal Moore sat with him. G-D only knows how many votes that got us?

Has anyone heard about the GARBAGE the Huff Post has out, regarding the National Enquier ( scum bags) saying the Palin had an an affair with her husbands business partner...where do they come up with this vile garbage?

They can't keep it straight. I heard that Todd Palin had an affair with Sarahs campaign manager.
Hey I know, they are a swinging couple & both rumors are true. Yeah that's it, that's the ticket!"

Just read on fox news:

[Link: elections.foxnews.com...]

I thought the Bush Tax Cuts caused this recession! Is this not proof positive that tax increases cause recessions to get worse? Does this not go against everything this twit has been saying?

Why does this crap still astound me when I read it?

Exactly. When my daughter was in Catholic Grade School , a bunch of "Concerned " mothers wanted the first Harry Potter book baned & took it to the principal.
My wife advised her to call me as I was reading it to her & she to me to sharpen her reading skills.
I got the call & assured the principal that the book was a fairy tale & a really good one. Turns out none of the complainers had even read the book.

Here's one worse. My daughter's Youth Symphony played "The Harry Potter" theme at her spring concert. No words, just music. The same composer who wrote Harry Potter, also wrote Indiana Jones, Stars Wars, ET and Superman. Some people got mad and indignant that they were playing Harry Potter. And they've never even seen the movie/read one of the books.

Conservatives and Christians should love the Harry Potter books. I've read them all and they teach strong values like commitment, loyalty to friends, the need to fight evil, and so on. Evangelicals love C.S. Lewis and his Narnia books, so why would they have a problem with Harry Potter? I suppose it may be because J.K. Rowling isn't an outspoken Christian like Lewis was.

What a big man to challenge a woman to hoops. Keep it up, barry.

Probably not even true, and not smart of Obama to even invite the comparison.

Palin helped take her high school basketball team to the AK State championships, winning with a broken ankle.

Meanwhile Obama shoots hoops for fun, but he didn't even make it onto his high school basketball team!

Actually, from what I've read about this "scandal", it only cropped up after the business partner - he and his soon to be ex-wife own a property with Todd and Sarah Palin - requested that his divorce papers be sealed. He did this because his phone number and address are listed in the documents, and he didn't want the myriad of media folks who are trying to dig up dirt on the Palins to interfere with his and his son's privacy.

The judge denied his request, and he's been bombarded with calls from media folks wanting to talk to him.

After this, the National Enquirer jumped from their successful journalistic efforts in the John Edwards story back into the cesspool of super-market check out line trash tabloid.

Why do Obama's lips appear blue?

/is it lipstick?

OMG, I asked this same thing about 2 months ago on the Comast Election Forum because his lips appear blue/purple on some TV ads, I have seen.
Well let me tell you, I got ripped a new one ....I was accused of being racist and someone pointed out that back in their day the term "blue gummer" referred to an African American in which I replied I wasn't talking about his GUMS and that it appeared to e his lips were a blue/purple color and I wasn't the only one who asked. Now mind you I only asked that question AFTER an Obama freak said McCain looked like 'Uncle Fester" and an " albino chipmunk"....but of course no one said anything about that

More simply, he didn't want all the dirt from his divorce in the hands of partisan muckrackers with an agenda.

I've read now that the divorce papers in question don't mention anything about an affair with Palin. No scandal at all. . .she's totally exonerated.

I think a lot of people complaining about Harry Potter haven't, as some have suggested, actually read the books. They just see it's got witches and magic and assume it must be some New Age stuff designed to ensnare children.
