Robot Invasion Open Thread

Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 6:33:14 pm PDT

We’re being besieged by web crawlers again, trying to download every page at the site as quickly as possible, ignoring the rules in our robots.txt file, and generally being a huge pain in the posterior. They always seem to get active on weekends, probably counting on people to be less vigilant.

Here’s an open thread while Stinky and I break out the delousing tools.

I boycott any football shows with Olberant. Hes nothing but a political hack and doesn't belong in any football coverage. There should be a wall of separation between deranged ranting political operatives and NFL coverage.

22 laxmatt1984  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 6:41:41pm

New Obama ad up in the DC market. It's the "houses" ad except it includes the line "John McCain defines middle class as anyone making less than 5 million a year".

That is not taking a quote out of context.
That is not seizing upon a gaffe.
That is not political theater.

It's bald face lying.
The blogosphere has to start the pushback on the outrageous lie being peddled by Obama.

It's not on Youtube yet, (because Obama will have egg on his face when he has to explain himself) but keep an eye out. The first chance there is someone has to confront Obama on his lie.

Reposting from previous thread, I am always late to everything!

In the new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, McCain leads Obama by 54%-44% among those seen as most likely to vote. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/— 3 points for both samples
McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama by 50%-46% among registered voters, the Republican's biggest advantage since January and a turnaround from the USA TODAY poll taken just before the convention opened in St. Paul. Then, he lagged by 7 percentage points.

Not to sound too stupid, but what is the purpose of web robots?

Web robots are actually little programs designed to catalog what's on the internet, often by annoyingly sucking up huge amounts of bandwidth as they download entire websites. This causes the websites to dramatically slow down. That's what I remember hearing—feel free to correct me if anything I've said is off.

Peaceful inner struggle just got more unpleasant......

Tactical Laser Could Work Like Long-Range Napalm

For simplicity, I'll assume flesh has similar properties to water. The heat capacity of water is about 4.2 joules per gram per degree centigrade. The heat of vaporization (the energy needed to turn water at boiling point to steam) is 2261 joules per gram.

So if the beam stays on the same spot of the target for a full two seconds –- which is a very long time under the circumstances –- it would in theory boil off a disc around one centimeter deep. In real life, the laser would be much less effective, as smoke and steam would rapidly degrade the effectiveness of the beam. Also in real life, the energy is likely to be focused at the center of the beam. And flesh is not water. And nobody is going to hand around being lasered that long… But we're just trying to get a general idea of orders of magnitude here.

68 Walter L. Newton  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 6:52:06pm

Interesting story.

We just closed our production of Noel Coward's "Hayfever" today, and in two weeks we open Ron Cowan's "Summertree."

Summertree is a memory play, going back and forth in the life of a young man, as he sits underneath his favorite tree in his backyard.

It is not until far into the show, we realize that the boy has been killed in Vietnam, and we are seeing memories of this young man from the point of view of his Mom, Dad, childhood friend and girlfriend.

Of course, the show examines war and death, but not in the typical screaming, in your face, one sided “My Name Is Rachel Corrie” mode.

This week, at a rehearsal, the 19 year old star of the show, Jeff Haas, a very good up and coming regional actor, nominated a number of times for best actor awards, announced that he has enlisted in the army and will head off for boot camp after the 6 week run of the show.

Life imitates Art.

But what benefit is gained from doing this ? marketing ?

Marketing is one reason. Reputable websites and browsers try to do this without being obtrusive or annoying. They do this so that they will have up to date lists of websites to link to search terms. So when you type in "bot" in their search box they can show you the 2 million webpages that contain "bot" in them. The worst bots are from copyright infringers and people who wish to get their own copy of a website to use for nefarious reasons who just bulk download entire websites.

I pulled him into a conference room and ripped him a new one. he ended up apologizing, but I told him to apologize to HER and I walked out. you cannot believe what an ass hole he is. and I am sure he will melt down on the air some night. Maybe the night of 11/4/08.

Ahhh.... dear Marcus Aurelius...

"A man's worth is no greater than his ambitions."

and

"Begin - to begin is half the work"

Great stuff. True philosopher king.

I like the long versions because the wording is so non-habitual -- sticks in the mind.

"Every man is worth just so much as the things about which he busies himself."

Always have faith in your values. Just b/c the media, hollywood and academia tell you it's dead, look around you and ask yourself what would fix the problem, conservatism or socialism? In a liberal society, does exercising your liberty work or asking the government to assume your liberty work? In the darkest of times, I believe in myself because my G-d created me in his image (not to be too preachy).

For all that I dislike Jimmy Carter for, allowing Panama to take control of the canal made a lot of sense because it was going to become a political hot potato because of Panamanian unrest over the US owning the canal. Now Panama is funding a third and larger set of locks for the canal to increase the capacity of the canal. The US actually started work on a third set of locks but WWII intervened and the locks were never completed.

I used the handwritten form because I wanted to underscore my "amateur" status--not a form-letter protest type of thing. I also knew that they might think it radioactive or full of that nasty white Johnson & Johnson's baby powder. Of course, I only sent it Thursday (but from Philadelphia, so it can't take THAT long for first class missive to get to its destination) So, perhaps my letter was the spark. heh! I'm looking forward to their response: " Dear __________ We looked into the matter and we were shocked, shocked, at such blatant bias! Like "Bathtub Boy" a whole bunch less than either of them.

I'm from St. Louis, which is where Costas cut his teeth. I always liked him. However, I guess his liberalism has worn on my the last few years, so I'm not the fan I used to be. Still like him, just not so much any more.

But, they'll stay as analysts? Phooey.

Walden and Civil Disobedience

I haven't read Walden since I was 19 (I'm re-reading the same copy) but in hindsight Thoreau was a wuss. He spent a year at Walden and that's supposed to be a big deal. I could do a year in a federal prison too. It's not really that impressive. I wonder how I'll feel about it the second time through.

re: #255 experiencedtraveller

to the college graduate? know I can't do that--privacy issues with family. I think it's the "grand, profound" pot induced bullshit that has me wondering more and more about HDT. Perhaps it was just that he was the "first" to notice the obvious in the so-called mundane happenings of the world and write it down that makes us take notice.

The college graduate isn't as good of a writer, but the concepts are the same.

258 experiencedtraveller  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 8:31:07pm

Aye privacy issues...

I tend not to analyse authors so much. It generally grinds them all down to the mundane. I like to let the book stand on its own.

/Its probably a simplistic approach...

259 katemaclaren  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 8:36:35pm

Charles, I hope I'm not breaking any rules here. Please forgive me my trespasses if I did.
Well, my dumpster diving at the Daily Kos, didn't yield much--no mention of KO or CM--that I could find. What a strange site--it's hard to navigate and what the hell--diaries? Here's the current flava. This diary was teed-up on the home page and was very long-winded. I thought it was rather funny that he begins one of his early paragraphs like this:

"Some will say I am talking out of my ass. I’m not a woman, so what do I know? True enough. I do not pretend to come close to understanding the daily frustrations and fury and resentment that sexism imposes on our society. But I do know how sexism shaped and constrained my mother, how, in some of the same ways in a different era, it shaped and constrained my wife, and how it continues to shape and constrain my daughter.

Born into deep poverty, her sister and herself victims of incest, an unwed mother at 14 and again at 16, my mother faced the triple whammy of classism, sexism and racism. Yet she found the strength as a single mom before that term had appeared in the sociology texts to leave her roots and move halfway across the country, hiring out first as washer and ironer of other family’s clothes, then moving to a low-paying clerk’s job which barely paid the bills while she managed to enhance her 8th-grade education with a GED. She married a man who emotionally and financially supported her goals of attending the business school of a university at the dawn of the 1960s, when, unlike today, older non-traditional students (she was 32) were rare and ridiculed."

Good Lordy. The dawn of the 1960s? Sounds like the earth's crust was still cooling...and yet...and yet--oooooh--I was in college then. So, bottom line--I don't think anyone's told them about KO and CM.

"Web Robots"

We used to call them "spiders".

They might have one or more of the following missions:

Down-load the site for a search engine (That is how Google, et al know what is where--"indexiong, that is called).

Down-load the site for an archive ("wayback machine").

Search the site for email addresses to and to the millions or opt in addresses CD.

Search the site for vulnerable software to be penetrated (to make a zombie serving a botnet master).

Search the site for weak passwords and such for malware installation for you to get when you download a page.

And other, mostly evil stuff.

In the laser lab in the university where I got my degree in physics, there was this sign on the wall: "Do not look into laser beam with remaining eye."

The lab had a continuous-beam laser that could burn a hole through a wooden 2x4 (thinnest direction) in a few seconds. Megawatt laser? Not at all. Kilowatt laser? Nope. 10 watts.

I frequently used a 1-milliwatt He-Ne laser to make holograms. When I put my hand into the beam, I could feel the heat.

Any practioner of peaceful inner struggle who gets scanned with a 100-kilowatt laser is going to abruptly become very peaceful indeed.

I heard that a new search engine (like we need another) called CUIL was responsible for a lot of these "attacks". It made the news b/c it was actually taking sites down. It has a crawler called Twiceler, which uses an amateurish technique of guessing a lot of pages and generating a lot of unnecessary traffic. Not cuil.
