Olbermann Sacked As Election Anchor

Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 7:40:34 pm PDT

The most openly hostile, openly crazed partisan hack on television (and his leg-tingling friend) will no longer be anchoring MSNBC’s election coverage: MSNBC Takes Incendiary Hosts From Anchor Seat.

MSNBC tried a bold experiment this year by putting two politically incendiary hosts, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, in the anchor chair to lead the cable news channel’s coverage of the election.

That experiment appears to be over.

After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC, the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage.

The change — which comes in the home stretch of the long election cycle — is a direct result of tensions associated with the channel’s perceived shift to the political left.

“The most disappointing shift is to see the partisan attitude move from prime time into what’s supposed to be straight news programming,” said Davidson Goldin, formerly the editorial director of MSNBC and a co-founder of the reputation management firm DolceGoldin.

Olbermann has no business being associated with “news” at all. He’s a disgrace. Hopefully, this is the first step toward tossing him out on his ear.

I used to like watching Olberasshole on ESPN, but ever since he switched to "news", he has been nothing but condescending, arrogant and usually 100% wrong on everything. He is the prototypical "progressive"...so smug and so confident in his "belief system"......too bad that he and his ilk are so far off base (to use one of his old metaphors)......I hate him now, he is the worst guy on TV. MSNBC is also the worst too....I would rather get my "news" from

re: #26 Lyric

The very top story gots this little gem:

The cynicism that led to the "Southern Strategy" is not the identical cynicism that chose Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate. But it contains the same DNA. It springs from the same do-any-unprincipled-thing-to-win-and-keep-winning- no-matter-what philosophy, the political gene that has guided too many politicians, modern and ancestral.

The party that defeated the Equal Rights Amendment, that has whittled away women’s reproductive choices for 35 years, that obstructs gender pay equity, despises sports equity, worked to sabotage affirmative action, objects to guaranteed family leave, panders to right-wing religionists’ views of women, wants to invade women's privacy, thinks violence against women isn’t worthy of legislation, and embraces at almost every opportunity to maintain the "traditional" role for women in society, now dares present itself as the party of feminist enlightenment.

CogDis!

And believe it or not Mathews thinks it was a plot by the Evil Republicans.

I have always had a pretty favorable view of Brokaw and Brian Williams and I think they make a good faith effort to report news and give a non-partisan analysis. At times during the conventions, you could almost see the two of them grimace every time they tried to raise a point or make a comment which was quickly followed by Olbermann shooting off his yap hole followed by Matthews trying to one up him in Obama-praise.

It was almost like a death match between olbermann and matthews to see which one could ride a larger unicorn er.....obamacorn:)

217 Mazer  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:23:28pm

I will miss KO in the same way I miss Saved By the Bell. It was so bad it was IMPOSSIBLE not to watch.

I was a big fan of Olbermann and Patrick on ESPN, even if he did come off snotty, I didn't mind... I'm the same way sometimes. And I used to watch Countdown just as an occasional counterpoint to BO'R. But the complete dropping of any charade of balance was shocking and, worst of all, boring. Like when Maher can't get a conservative guest on Real Time. What's the fun in watching a bunch of people bash the same point over and over? None is what.

And did anyone else catch Maddow calling Palin a "laugh out loud" pick about, oh, 7 days ago? It is AWESOME watching the Left implode. The only thing that could possible have been better--- McCain/ Rice '08.

218 Areopagitica  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:24:02pm

I also say that MSNBC should yank Matthews if he refers to Obama as a young Lincoln or JFK.

219 APH  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:30:02pm

Good riddance - That guy was totally unsufferable.

re: #211 cblesz

Um, hello? DAvid Gregory? He is JUST AS BAD. Left wing hack. Geez.

Excuse me, you might correct you post to read "Left wing DRUNKEN hack" as he was seldom sober when calling in to speak with the formerly drunken Don Imus prior to the cancellation of Imus's network radio show. David Gregory is a high profile "left wing snark artist" that is about .02% BAC from oblivion.

221 spynverzyon  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:35:11pm

Wait - so Obermann was serious the whole time he was spewing his relentless, psychotic lunacy? I thought they just had him in there as a comic relief caricature of an Angry Left activist!

How has someone as dense as I am made it to the age of 44?

222 Jefiner  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:35:29pm

David "sloppy seconds" Gregory?

eeew.

223 ensignsj  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:38:26pm

I had no idea what a clown Olberman had become until I started watching some of NBC's election coverage this year. I only did that because I heard what a disgrace it has been. I don't think I've watched MSNBC of my own accord for years. This guy is truly an ass. He's one of the worst of the self righteous media hacks out there. He's even beneath NBC News. Dump him completely.

224 DrCruel  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:44:02pm

What a shame. I was hoping he'd cling to his post long enough to drive MSNBC into single digit ratings ...

225 tum  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:48:14pm

I really hate Olberman's approach. I don't care about his politics but his "I'm angry because I understand and care and the rest of you don't" approach really annoys me. Letterman and Stewart too. The over-the-top facial expressions ...gah!

226 RTLM  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:52:40pm

re: #213 jaxgtr

as a GE employee, I must say, this is a positive step. Now if they would just kill the whole network, I would really be happy.

What do you think of the current GE Chairman and CEO, Jeff Immelt?

227 stuiec  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 9:59:11pm

And he's a lily-livered coward to boot:

Some staff members said the tension led to the network’s decision to keep Mr. Olbermann in New York for the Republican convention, after he ran the desk in Denver during the Democratic convention. MSNBC said that he stayed in New York to anchor coverage of Hurricane Gustav. But some workers say there were other reasons — namely, that Mr. Olbermann was concerned about his safety in St. Paul, given the loud crowds at MSNBC’s set in Denver.

228 NTropy  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 10:05:24pm

Awwww, take heart Keith... You still have your diary over on DailyKos to lead you into complete irrelevance.

229 Age Of Freedom  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 10:09:01pm

This news is as good as the big 0 losing the election.
I truly h0pe Olbermann got heavily sacked, as in T-bagged.

230 slotgun  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 10:18:06pm

Goodness gracious, mercy me, it is indeed sweet to see these people get their comeuppance.

As I noted during the denver debacle at Invesco, there are few things that present greater threats to national security than 84,000 people with IQs between 115-118.

Sounds like MSNBC just downgraded 236 points' worth of intelligence.

231 tripletdad  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 10:29:35pm

I know it's a dead thread, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I wondered when MSNBC would realize what an unhinged lunatic he really was. I was passing by his show some time back and he kept saying "here kitty, kitty" with a crazed look in his eye was someone giggled hysterically off-camera. That they have to pay for his (and their own) stupidity for another 7 years is just icing on the cake.

232 captwfcall  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 10:36:19pm

amazing that they've actually admitted the bias.

233 tradewind  Sun, Sep 7, 2008 11:02:03pm

A lot to smile about tonight. I am soooo glad we won't be subjected to the Worst Person In The World and his hyperbolic tingly-legged sidekick. David Gregory has given the WH hell at press gaggles, but he is somewhat more mature now and at least decent on air.

234 Emery Calame  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 12:03:48am

The first time I saw Olberman I thought he was joking. I thought it was a "bit". But the bit kept going on and on and getting more intense, one sided, ludicrous, and at times it was even contradictory.

He sounded like Lyndon Larouche telling the Queen of England that she ought to be ashamed of being the biggest drug pusher in Europe. He sounded like Alex Jones on the phone with some sleepy sounding post master in Utah telling him that he was a filthy, terrorist, UN, Trilateral, illuminati thug trying to hide the truth that Alex and David Ickes had discovered about chemtrails for his secret Bilderberger masters by not delivering DVD orders. He sounded like a Narcissistic bipolar who was a half inch away from being pretty sure that he was Jesus 2.0. He sounded like a John Bircher in the middle of a particularly wierd rant only coming from the other poltical extreme.

It was probably the most retarded, misguided, ridiculous thing I've ever seen done by a "serious" commentator. And I've seen O'Reilly at interviewing Alf, asking some lady fashion-trapped in early 1986 about the on camera body language of somebody he sent a mobile camera guy to esentially bitch out about something O'reilly didn't like, and shaking his fist at the secret oil cartel badguys who supposedly unilaterally synchronize the prices of the oil market according to this guy at his gas station. I've seen Dan Rather asking George Bushs' deceased commanders secretary if in her opinion a faxed word document supposedly written on a super type writer in '74 was legitimate and beaming with vindication when she said yed, I believe it is and lateer STILL trying to hang on by his fingernails with "fake but accurate".

Olberman really takes the cake. He is the high-king weirdo of the "newz" biz.

I kind of wish MTV'd come along and give the guy puppets, props, a green screen compositing FX crew, and a live band and just let him go nuts for an hour. And when he says something completely daft they could show a brief canned reaction shot of Gilbert Gottfried scratching his head or shrugging having his jaw go slack in amazement.

And by the by I think Glenn Beck is a bit corny and seems to be sort of a half ass wanna be limbaugh-esque pastiche of energetic but charismaless lameness. I feel he is some sort of android built by a cabal of academic-liberals from Berkely (the nice ones who like to see the guy in the giant penis hat with flashing lights who is out protesting "conflict coffee" by flipping off the police but don't like to see him hurling debris at police or trying to punch them in the junk) to conduct humane and ethical socialization experiements on the mysterious red-state.

Now I don't believe that, but I DO feel it. And that is why I don't make political decisions based on my feelings alone.

I was gonna stiff MCCain on the vote. But when Obama said he was gonna get the US economy off of foriegn oil in ten years without increasing local production massively or building nukes I knew defeating him was well worth supporting McCain. Palin seems to be unexpected icing on the cake. And it's fun watching her make the highly agressive dominant left stop their two year and six month inevitable victory charge in TWO DAYS. That "styrofoam columns" line was apt and awesome. The 40 million viewers (including PBS) slam was double fudge supreme awesome with walnuts and mint crushin's.

For a sullen, bitter, quasi-castrated, gentled Republican awaiting my certain political doom (we left the cities and dwelt alone in the barren places for an age eating small lizards and the foul bitter flesh of road squished serpents. Scorpians were a special treat that we called bite sized-sand-lobsters but we had no butter to dip them in. ) it has been a really good week to watch TV and I had a cold for most of it.

235 wiffersnapper  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 12:11:08am

239 kyleb  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 1:36:00am

It's like when the tower exploded at the end of LOTR.--the Great Eye panicking for a couple of seconds as it fell, then BLAMO! I'll bet Olberboyy had that same look in his eye. Taking a moment to bask in the sweet, sweet shock waves. Like Gimli...

OK, back to work.

240 crepuscular prick  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 2:04:19am

David Gregory is much more subtle in his intense hatred for Bush and the right.

241 radix023  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 2:46:25am

Olbermann may be a deranged lefty but that sells. Don't expect to see him out anytime soon. The relevant bit from the nyt article:

As Mr. Olbermann raised his voice, his ratings rose as well, and he now reaches more than one million viewers a night, a higher television rating than any other show in the troubled 12-year history of the network. As a result, his identity largely defines MSNBC. “They have banked the entirety of the network on Keith Olbermann,” one employee said.

The Left can't cope when reality doesn't meet their preconceptions. Look at the popularity of "The West Wing" as an example. Olbermann is just one more place for escapist fantasy for these perpetually immature child-men and child-women.

243 JAT  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 4:12:49am
Olbermann has no business being associated with “news” at all. He’s a disgrace. Hopefully, this is the first step toward tossing him out on his ear.

A little harsh - I think you are discrediting ears. He should be tossed out on his "Chris Matthews." Or is it the other way. No matter interchangeable parts.

244 riarossi  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 4:25:35am

247 Just_A_Grunt  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 6:13:08am

It ain't like David Gregory is any better, it's just that he has, like you know, asked a question of the President, from like, actually inside the White House in the press room.
At least I think he has asked a question. Most of the time he seems to be filibustering.

He still has a contract for four million a year through 2013. For that kind of money I would expect some really fine analysis which Olbermann is clearly incapable of. MSNBC is losing money over this....

More like they're taking a bath on this.

250 Kailen  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 6:24:38am

From the article:

The success of the Fox News Channel in the past decade along with the growth of political blogs have convinced many media companies that provocative commentary attracts viewers and lures Web browsers more than straight news delivered dispassionately.

The lefties in the media really believe Fox News is Bill O'Reilly 24/7, don't they? I for one despise Bill O'Reilly for the same reason I despise Keith Olbermann. He's a rabid political hack. No, I turn to Fox News, when Bill O'Reily's show isn't on, to GET "straight news delivered dispassionately". It's the only channel that will still give you the news, much of which other channels try to spike.

251 Thunderbottom  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 6:28:59am

Dang - too bad. From the way he was going, I was hoping to see him start foaming at the mouth and twitching before falling backwards in his chair.

The latest issue of National Review has an extensive article about how K/O is driving MSNBC and its parent corporation, NBC, even further left than where it is now.

Olbermann is there for the demographic which has aged out of the Howard Stern set. He's supposed to be Bill Maher Lite and works really hard at being outrageous because he can't say "f***" every other word. I'll be glad when the current administration is out of DC, Olbermann won't have any material, and he'll be off the air.

259 uptight  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 7:17:28am

It will be great to see his face though - when McCain/Palin romps home to easy victory.

After 2004 I sincerely thought the Democrats would get all introspective and analyse exactly why they lost so badly to president that everyone told us was stupid, violent and woefully unpopular.

I though the Dems would see that the far left, Michael Moore running Fahrenshite 9/11 on TV the night before election, all the venal Kos crap, Cindy Sheehag etc. was dragging them down. That it wasn't just the elitist, champagne socialist delegate they put up.

This time, I expected the DNC to shove all the lefties out of the window and nominate a blue dog.

Hell no - they just intensified the liberal crap and picked and even more elisist, further left candidate.

Don't they ever learn?

Their sort of person only makes up a maximum of 13% of the electorate (if the loopy choices chosen on opinion polls are anything to go by).

The rest of the Democratic party are straightforward blue collar guys who'll play along only so far.

They'll get out and vote for Obysmal in the same way we would for McCain - 'cept we've got Palin now - so they are rather stuffed.

maybe next time, huh?

re: #254 FrogMarch

what are these blow-hard left-wing hacks going to do when George W leaves office?

they, the Hollywood left and the kos kids are going to keep on ballsing it up for any future nominees - until the Democratic Party realise that left wing stupidity & elitism don't play too well in a country where 90% of the voters hate left wing stupidity and elitism.

but don't tell them

261 Noam Chumpski  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 7:42:58am

It only took MSNBC.... how long? I guess the heat and ratings were getting too bad.

I really hate the voice that Olbermann concocted for his "news gig." It's so over the top.

"Buh-Bye, Mr. Buuuusssssshhhhhhhhh."

262 jcbunga  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 7:57:08am

On a related topic, what will all those folks do with their "01-20-09" bumper stickers if McCain-Palin win?

Those suckers don't come off very easily after they've been on for 4 years.

I'm printing up a bunch that say "Obama-wa-ha-ha".

263 Clubsec  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 8:11:22am

If anyone in advertising is reading this, be informed ... The pre-game & halftime NBC Sports broadcast of the Colts-Bears game had (A shill for ObmaUH .. uh ... uhh) Olbermann on and so, I'd CHANGE channels whenever he is on. MSNBC? Another reason I find NO reason to procure cable.

264 Just sayin...  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 8:14:33am

Who needs a fairness doctrine - just let market forces sort everything out. MSNBC (or their accountants) finally realized the hard reality that bias = decreased market share = lower share value = smaller executive bonuses = Buh Bye Oberman.

265 akarra  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 8:15:53am

I don't really worry about Olbermann's bias - I'd like to see numbers that he actually does any good for the Left. I think he's a symptom of the Bush-bashing more than a cause, and given time, he looks awfully silly.

That having been said, I hate that he pollutes the airwaves. A friend blogged about the plight Olbermann causes him at length.

270 zerp  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 12:14:48pm

What took NBC so long? Correcting such an obvious blunder this late in the game provides even more proof as how poorly things are run at MSNBC. This resolves nothing. Adding Mr. Temper Tantrum (David Gregory) is no improvement, Please. What, is David Gregory going to freak out like five year old. He used to pull that nonsense with Press Secretary, Scott McSellout.
