New Gallup Poll: McCain Leads Obama, 54% - 44%

Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 8:04:58 pm PDT

Poll: Convention lifts McCain over Obama.

WASHINGTON — The Republican National Convention has given John McCain and his party a significant boost, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken over the weekend shows, as running mate Sarah Palin helps close an “enthusiasm gap” that has dogged the GOP all year.

McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama by 50%-46% among registered voters, the Republican’s biggest advantage since January and a turnaround from the USA TODAY poll taken just before the convention opened in St. Paul. ...

In the new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, McCain leads Obama by 54%-44% among those seen as most likely to vote. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/- 3 points for both samples.

Among the findings:

• Before the convention, Republicans by 47%-39% were less enthusiastic than usual about voting. Now, they are more enthusiastic by 60%-24%, a sweeping change that narrows a key Democratic advantage.

I was one of former and proud to be one of the latter.

-Palin is a religious fanatic who will ban all abortions (they didn't say how she will do this)

Look at the Realclearpolitics Poll average chart.

Since the end of June McCain has been trending up from 40%. It bounces up and down but he should be around 45-46% at this time without even considering convention bounces. That puts him on a steady track towards 50% by the election. Obama has been stuck bouncing between 36% and 48% since April and except for the convention bounce has been trending down since the beginning of June.

The MSM simply isn't going to tell people about the "My Muslim faith" thing. Basically the only 3 media outlets reporting this right now are the Washington Times, WorldNetDaily and the Dallas Morning News.

Not that it means anything really, I don't believe he is truly a Christian either. When he answered the questions during the Saddleback conference, I didn't hear the things that a Christian would say, especially when he described his own faith. He doesn't say that he believes Jesus is the messiah, that he is a sinner and that he is saved only through Jesus. Maybe he did this so he doesn't piss off his base, but all of us that do Believe aren't fooled.

His faith is in Marxism.

There is a slim chance, but one there of a reverse coat tail effect in WA. Dino Rossi is running again after having '04 stolen by 133 votes. Queen Gregoire has managed to foul everything up, big time. If Rossi has a good lead in the election, and McCain Palin perform well, there a small chance WA will turn Red.

Biden is in a tough pickle at their debate. On the one hand, everybody expects him to trounce Gov. Palin so if she holds her own and it's a draw, she wins big.

On the other hand, if ( I should say when ) he comes off as an arrogant know-it-all he will alienate lots of voters. Ask Rick Lazio how that works

Don't get to excited about swings up or down. Bad stuff will happen. Look at trends. This election will be fought hard the next few weeks in the key states, MI, OH, PA, CO, FL and VA. If McCain can hold on to what he has, and make an inroad in PA and MI, then at the end of the month he can mount a drive in some blue states to nail things down.

I agree, but would like to add, with this poll, maybe some will be encouraged to switch sides. A lot of people I know view these things as popularity contests and voting for someone who has 30% in a poll just is embarrassing to them. I don't care myself (I'm still GWB's biggest fan for going into Iraq), but maybe it breaks that mindset.

You're right, of course, but it's ok to get a little giddy for a minute at news like this.

PA is going to be an interesting race. There are a heck of a lot of folks here who are going to identify with the wrong end of Obama's "bitter" remarks in SF and they have long memories. There's a lot of ground in between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and Scranton is only a very small part of it.

All the other reasons why that's unlikely aside, I just don't see what would be in it for her to accept the offer, especially now. Her best chance for 2012 is to see him either lose or screw up. I'd bet she still has her eye on the prize.

It will see saw depending on the news of the day.
People are starting to see through Obama as they become interested in the election.
Palin appeals to a huge chunk of middle America.
In the Battleground poll, 60% of people consistently self identify as conservative to very conservative. (R)s have been putting up middle of the road candidates trying to appeal to the left instead of the 60%, and been losing because middle of the roaders aren't appealing to them. BHO is two far left and a lot of 60% are voting NOBama this year, and another bunch are energized by Palin.

It's now McCain's to lose, he can drive this thing to win by being solidly conservative.

Nothing compares to a face to face discussion. When the other persona can see a neighbor, co-worker, local person giving them compelling arguments in favor of a candidate- it connects more than an impersonal TV ad. And that's why it's so vital people get involved. We all know 0bama will have Union help and community organizers out. We need to fill in the gaps for the McCain team.

Biden is a foreign policy "expert" only because he has been on the same Senate committee for all his career. The first question raised in the debates about foreign policy and I promise you Saracuda will rip him a new one.

Biden is NOT a particularly smart man. Palin is one extraordinarily smart woman. I can't wait for that first debate, it will be the deal clincher.

Yeah... and it's cheap. A volunteer with a stack of paper pamphlet costs next to nothing.

Well it did cost me a few bites out of my shorts from Kerry supporters. Feh. But, I can take that.

Do you think he would replace Biden with anyone but Hillary? I can't imagine it. It would not make much sense to bring in someone other than her. He's got a sinking ship. Of course, he already has a majority of Hillary's base in his camp by now anyway. But bringing Hillary back to life would bring back many of those who departed when Hillary was dropped off the edge of the world.

This is just all pie in the sky speculation though. I too am anxiously awaiting the VP debate. A little nervous about it actually. Sarah's a bright woman but she is going to be up against an arrogant SOBiden and I am betting it will be rough going.

The lies just a keep a coming like the "Selma" claim, this one is equally funny:

It remains whether this turns out to be Barack Obama's "Christmas in Cambodia" untruth, his Dukakis-in-tank hilarity -- or both.

Regardless, what follows is a pretty obvious "misstatement" that would not possibly be ignored if it were uttered by a conservative or a Republican.

In his hilariously titled post ("Mighta Joined If He Coulda Capped Some Cong") on Barack Obama's interview in a barn this morning (not kidding) on This Week with Georage Stephanopoulos, fellow NewsBuster Mark Finkelstein reported on Obama's answer to a viewer's question about whether he ever considered military service. You can read Mark's post for his overall thoughts, but I want to focus on something the Illinois senator said that several commenters at the post took exception to:

You know, I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. .... But keep in mind: I graduated in 1979.

There are only two "little" problems - it did not exist at that time.

A woman with symptoms like Ms. Palin’s should be examined to determine her condition, said Dr. Laura Riley of Massachusetts General Hospital. What exactly is the hit? It's unusual for a woman to keep a pregnancy secret for seven months, so that fact alone is noteworthy. There were plenty of articles in the Alaska newspapers in which people said how surprised they were that she was pregnant and that the pregnancy was so advanced. They didn't say there was anything wrong with keeping quiet about the pregancy and neither did the NYT reporters. They just said it was unusual, which it is.

They were only talking about general advice and "the odds'. Doctors do that all the time. I'd be surprised if 99 out of 100 obstetricians wouldn't recommend going to the hospital rather than getting on a plane.

Right. Say what you want, it's in the public discourse, and it's nobody's business except Palin and her doctor. Anyone else commenting on it is out of line.

I can't make you understand the written word. I know others have tried and failed.

You are obviously not a woman. And not a woman operating in a man's world, or even the business world. Pregnancy denotes weakness, sad, but VERY true. I'm a female executive and this is so NOT unusual. You say you're pregnant and you're trying to advance and you will be gently, condescendingly, patronizingly, set aside. You DO lose position and clout. It's a fact.

See that's the problem. No AIDS patients are running amok selling shit to children. LAME comparison. These are not cancer or AIDs patients. And my attitude solves one thing - ostracize and isolate these scumbags and yes some where kids that I knew before they got hooked. You're way to idealistic to think that it is a poor soul just popping a pill in the privacy of his home. I think your head is buried in the sand about the reality of these "poor afflicted" scumbags. Children are at a greater risk when you pooh pooh drugs and say one has a disease, poor soul.

Take a deep breath. Please.

This response is not rational.

Rational and realistic, sorry but jail for junkies works where I come from. Junkies are not AIDS patients.
