Alaska Democratic Party Deletes Page Crediting Sarah Palin with Killing 'Bridge to Nowhere'

Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 1:16:06 pm PDT

A web site paid for by the Alaska Democratic Party says unequivocally that the state of Alaska officially abandoned the Bridge to Nowhere project, and credits Governor Sarah Palin.

Or ... it used to say that, before the page mysteriously vanished some time during the past few days.

Here’s the Google cache from September 4th: Retire Ted Stevens » Blog Archive » Ted Earmarked Funds for Bridge that Goes Nowhere.

And here’s the text that they consigned to the memory hole, because it’s embarrassingly off message:

Ted Earmarked Funds for Bridge that Goes Nowhere

* Stevens championed proposed bridge near Ketchikan that became national symbol of wasteful spending

* Sen. Murkowski’s family would benefit personally from the bridge

* State of Alaska killed bridge

The proposed Gravina Island Bridge, also known as the “Bridge to Nowhere,” became a national symbol of wasteful congressional spending and driver of earmark reform. On Sept. 21, 2007, the State of Alaska officially abandoned the controversial project.

The Gravina Island Bridge initially received $223 million in 2005 via earmarks by Alaska Senators Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski. The bridge would have connected Ketchikan, Alaska with its local airport on nearby Gravina Island (population 50). Congress stripped the earmark after a national uproar about it but appropriated the money anyway for unspecified transportation uses. Former Gov. Frank Murkowski’s administration set aside about $113 million of the appropriation for the Ketchikan bridge. However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.

UPDATE at 9/8/08 2:33:06 pm:

Now the Alaska Democratic Party has re-posted the page with a new address: Retire Ted Stevens » Gravina Bridge.

UPDATE at 9/8/08 2:35:15 pm:

re: #26 Occasional Reader

I admit, I was skeptical about the choice of Palin. But McCain, and/or his strategists, are looking more and more like they are ten steps ahead of the Dems.

It's classic Fighter Pilot.

McCain might have been flying way back in the 60's but clearly he's kept up with his reading on combat theory. Palin wasn't just a "maverick choice" or a "cynical choice" or a small-time play for the Hillary vote. She's a "game changer".

McCain, or somebody in his staff, clearly saw that the opponent isn't just Obama, but the entire Democrat-leaning media-industrial complex. Fighting on their turf was a losing battle, so the best thing to do? Make the turf fight them. Use their own weaknesses and faults as weapons. Don't just change the rules, change the playing field.

Put "that woman" in there. Play squarely to your own image as a "wily maverick outsider", throw gas on the Hillary/Obama fire, set the DeMSM up to shoot itself in the foot when they inevitably try their reactionary elitist best to "Lewisnky" Gov. Palin, energize the remnants of the party with somebody new, and bring in the Conservatives from the cold, ALL AT THE SAME TIME?

It's almost too perfect a phenomenon for a mere man to have devised!

If the Dems had done this, I'd be whistling in admiration and calling it a miracle for sure (since they're so foolish most of the time, and would drown if the media wasn't running interference for them).

It's gonna sink the entire Obama campaign if he keeps on this line of campaigning. I don't think Obama can resist it. Ego's too big.

Yeah, I'm by no means making a republican win prediction. I'll use your word and say it's pretty amazing how things are turning out up until now.

I think the McCain campaign studied the last two presidential elections closely, as well as how Obama dealt with the elections he won. Somehow, they figured out how to throw it all back in their faces, and make Obama's typcial strategy work against him.

The beauty of it is that all the attention these past 10 days has been on her, and NONE of it has been on Obama. What little attention he has gotten in the press has not been very flattering, and he gaffed at least twice this past weekend. So did Joe Biden when he completely bungled his way through an answer about the troop surge.

And the next most beautiful thing?

The 527s have yet to really get started on Obama/Wright, Obama/Rezko, Obama/Ayers, Biden/"Obama's not ready to be president" etc...

Gov Palin has really got to be studying her brains out in National Security, Foreign Policy and Economics. Those are the three areas they'll ask her about in interviews and in the debate.

99 runrabbitrun  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 1:51:06pm

Keep it up, Dems. Soon your entire party and its legislative record will have to be erased or steamrolled as the American public - aided by the breath of fresh air that is Sarah Palin - slowly fans away the smokescreen obscuring your destructive history.

Then McCain/Palin would have to debate and run against a couple of tailor's dummies wearing suits when the time comes. But come to think of it, they already are.

However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.

Problem is, Obama can't resist the urge to do so. Simply having Palin in the race as McCain's VP means that he appears inferior to her. Not to other people, mind you, but to himself. Obama is such a malignant narcissist that he must appear better than anyone else, period. She outshines and outclasses him in every way. Thus, she is the real threat to him, within the confines of his own mind.

US Withdraws From Nuclear Deal with Russia

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in a statement that President Bush is notifying Congress he is rescinding a request for consideration of the nuclear cooperation deal with Moscow.

The nuclear agreement, which would have required U.S. congressional approval, was signed earlier this year in Moscow and was designed to allow U.S. and Russian companies to become partners in joint ventures involving the nuclear industry. Analysts say business generated by the agreement could have been worth billions of dollars.

In the statement read by State Department spokesman Sean McCormack, Rice says U.S. nonproliferation goals contained in the agreement remain valid, but the timing is not appropriate for such an accord.

Obama is getting seriously rattled now, as his "Muslim faith" gaffe yesterday showed. He thought he could just waltz his way into the presidency like he did his other contest. Instead he is way in over his head. It appears that the campaign had no strategy to handle falling behind. so supremely confident they were. There is a chaotic element and lack of focus now to the campaign and its surrogates attacks/response to McCain-Palin, desperately grasping onto anything, no matter how far-fetched, in the hopes that it will stick.

If during the first debate Obama has anything like a repeat performance of Saddleback, it may be all over.

Earlier today I listened (for the first time) to a Dec 07 conversation Glenn and Helen at Instapundit had with McCain. What really struck me was how totally honest, straightforward, calm, and totally logical he came across in a one on one conversation like that. Yahoo News campaigning for Obama.

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

THE FACTS: Palin did abandon plans to build the nearly $400 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport. But she made her decision after the project had become an embarrassment to the state, after federal dollars for the project were pulled back and diverted to other uses in Alaska, and after she had appeared to support the bridge during her campaign for governor.

so Obama's proof that Palin is a liar is that she APPEARED to support the bridge.

Run

The one thing I do not doubt is McCains love of country.

The end of his speech at the RNC was the most inspiring thing I have ever heard.
When he said, stand up! Fight for this country, We are Americans, we don't give up....well I can tell you I stood up and clapped.

TW, I'm with you.

It's very exciting talking on the phone to voters now. Here's the interesting dynamic: when you reach a Dem/former Dem/Indie who has been electrified by Mac/Sarah, they will often say that they have been contacted by the Dems as well. They admit that they will NOT cast a vote for Obama because he's too far left or has a past that makes them suspicious of his motives. However, when you ask them if they have told this to the DNC, they reply, "No.... I haven't said that....".

It may be that they fear being branded as racists (Bradley Effect), or just that they will not admit the truth to their party yet. And it happens so often that it makes me wonder how much the current polls are out of whack.

re: #253 Dave the.....

So Mccain won the Republican nomination fairly easily, even though the Conservative chattering classes all opposed him (mostly). Did the individual voters know something the bloggers and talk radio guys didn't?

I always liked him. Kind of felt loyalty to him after he came to the Minnesota state fair in 2004 to campaign for President Bush. Did a great presentation and then walked around the fair. Even then, the lefties were going nuts.

Where would we conservatives go? Sit out? Irresponsible.

I still am not fond of McCain's immigration stance, his support for global warming BS, and probably something else that's not coming to mind at present. On defense, fiscal policy, judges....he's probably fine.

A funny thing happened to me yesterday.

The US Embassy here sent me a list of DNC an RNC websites that offered the convention speeches.

One speech was missing. guess who's! The Republican Vice Presidential nominee's speech.

Funny that!

When I commented to the Embassy that it seemed to me that Conni Rice had not seemed to have cleaned out the partisan denizens of 'Olde foggy Bottom' I got a reply that somehow? Gov. Palin's speech had 'somehow' been forgotten! The nice 'olde foggy bottom' lady sent me the URL but when I checked with others who also got the original message from the US Embassy none of them had received the URL of Gov. Palin's speech.

Yup folks the critters down at 'olde foggy Bottom' are still doing their 'partisan darn-dest' to spike the Lady's guns!

So, if the polls continue to uptick for McCain/Palin, do you think this will have an adverse affect on Obama/Biden fundraising? Could people decide not to throw good money after bad?

I read somewhere that the Dems and Obama figured he needed to raise 100 million month to make it worth opting out of Federal financing. So far, he has not met that target which leaves the GOP and McCain with much more cash on hand.

Could the Dems have made yet another mistake?

I read the whole story which appeared I think in Time or Newsweek in the 70's and it is gut wrenching.

I cannot even imagine being in solitary confinement --a tiny little cell -with a bucket to go to the bathroom, no books, no paper or pens, no window and not being allowed to talk to anyone for 2 years! The guards came and took him out for a cold shower every couple weeks.

That was after 3 years of beatings and torture. When he became so weak and ill --they didn't want him to die so they locked him in solitary for 2 years.

One of the things he mentioned that kept him from going insane was that he read the "books" in his head. That he could recall things he had read.

See ya tomorrow lizards, time to go walk the black lab along the American. Got to share this first. I bought a new water heater this weekend and had the big empty box out on the patio. I was fooling with my two little dogs teasing them to get in the box. The boob (Luke my lab) got in that box and turned into a friggin puppy again. You had to be there but I just couldn't stop laughing with him jumping around inside that thing, darting out doing three sixties and running back in. Of course he then proceeded to chew the box to pieces, true to his breed.

Obama told the $30,800-per-person attendees -– the money goes to a joint Obama campaign-DNC fund -- that he hoped they were “up for a fight.”

“I hope you guys are game,” he said, “because I haven’t been putting up with 19 months of airplanes and hotel food and missing my babies and my wife –- I didn’t put up for that stuff just to come in second. I don’t believe in coming in second.”

Obama has another problem:
Burn Rate.

The DNC has had to rescue the convention host committee, which probably accounts for its high burn rate. Right now, the DNC has spent 96% of everything they’ve received in this cycle, while the Republicans have spent 67%

Obama and Biden Voted for Bridge to Nowhere
By John Powers, Chicago Daily Observer
Posted in Our Columns on August 31, 2008 with 7 comments.
tags: Earmarks Finance

Now that Alaska is front and center in the news again, it is a good time to catch up on a favorite story, The Bridge to Nowhere, using the Washington Post US Congress Votes Database.

Though Gov. Palin originally supported the earmark spending on the Ketchikan bridge (“to nowhere), she eventually killed the project, chosing to spend Federal money on other infrasturcture programs.

However, Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama voted for funding the Bridge, even when given a second chance by Sen. Tom Coburn, who proposed shifting earmark funds to Katrina relief.

Sen. McCain did not vote on the Coburn Amendment, though he is on record as opposing the Ketchikan bridge earmark.

Link to votes record below.

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

so Obama's proof that Palin is a liar is that she APPEARED to support the bridge.

I spoke with a couple of citizens about the bridge when I was up there.
To them, the bottom line is that it would have saved a 50-mile trip to "the other side of the Anchorage area" by cutting straight across the bay. Existing route is a road that follows the contour of the bay, although I can't verify that ... I only saw it (the island) on the train coming back from Denali, and don't know the streets/highways in the area.

That was OK with them, when the guvmint was footing the bill, but they also seemed quite fine with not having the bridge, especially on 8 cents of each dime contributed locally.
That's when Palin said "no thanks" ... after the funding was "cut back".
Palin was ready to accept a "free bridge".

In summary, their reaction was "whatever. We don't need it bad enough to pay for it personally, though." One of them asked me why this was such a big deal in the lower 48. For some reason they seemed to think accepting a free bridge was a no-brainer.

As if I needed any additional reason to vote McCain, they give me one more.

On her Website, Streisand chimed in last week on John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin, writing, “We are not that stupid.”

She wrote, “I believe John McCain chose Gov. Palin because he truly believes that women who supported Hillary --- an experienced, brilliant, life-long public servant --- would vote for him because his Vice President has two x chromosomes. McCain’s selection of Governor Palin is a transparent and irresponsible decision all in the name of trying to win this election.”

And WTF is wrong with Spielberg? I just love Obama's grassroots donators, don't you?

Co-hosts for event include the DreamWorks team of Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, as well as political consultant Andy Spahn

And look at this list of losers she endorsed.

She had endorsed Hillary Clinton in the primary, and appeared and spoke at a fund-raiser for her in January. She also sang at a concert for John Kerry in 2004 and Al Gore in 2000.

Actually, I think it's a great idea. It plays to Senator McCains biggest strength, and the voting public remembers the last debate, not the first, when it ocmes time to pull the lever.

They both looked a little embarrassed but both said, It is an honor to serve.

Here is a thought:

If Sarah Palin is such an unqualified nobody, then presumably any ol' hockey mom in Alaska could do what she did.

So how come no other hockey mom (or dad, for that matter) has stepped up to unseat Ted Stevens? How come Sarah Palin is about the only Alaskan politician of any political or socioeconomic stripe who's been able to rally the people behind her and generate real change and reform in Alaska?

Is it just possible that she is more than a run-of-the-mill hockey mom -- that she's a shrewd, skilled politician with an unusually sharp and capacious mind?

Even the U.S. Mint is joining the environmentally “green” marketing game. The latest entry is the new dollar coin that the Mint is trying to convince consumers to use. After two failed attempts at promoting the use of dollar coins (the Susan B. Anthony and the Sacagawea coins), the Mint has unveiled the presidential coin series. At press events held in four cities including Portland, the Treasury Department made the bold announcement that this is a “green” coin and can be recycled. What they failed to mention is that virtually all coins can be recycled.

And how much is this foolishness going to cost?

BAWHAHAHAHAHAHA!

This is not 100% accurate. She could have left when the boat left but instead decided to stay to test the borders. I imagine that after getting in by violating the sea border and getting away with it, she decided she would break through the land borders. She is attempting to "leave" by going through Israel or Egypt.

I also think that she might have traded her seat on the boat, for one of the 7 unidentififed Phakestinian-Arabs that left by boat.

re: #298 jwb7605

Your summary isn't quite right.

The money was earmarked for infrastructure. The project her predecessor initiated was to use it to build the bridge.

Alaska received the earmark before she was governor.

The Bridge would have cost DOUBLE what they got. It was her decision to use the money for OTHER infrastructure projects rather than the bridge which yes, the State would have had to come with the rest.

That's just being fiscally responsible.

That's how government leaders SHOULD work. I find it difficult to believe that some cry for reduced spending, for fiscal responsibility and THEN criticize a leader who DOES do exactly what they claim they want.

This whole idea that she supported it when it was free is nonsense. Even before she was elected governor during the end of her campaign she issued a statement that she was looking at other alternatives because the costs were going to be much higher. She supported the idea --she never made a promise nor had a commitment to it.

How about Palin pointing out Obama's greed for porky goodness?

Palin, who received millions in earmarks for projects during her time as mayor of Wasilla, returned fire tonight in front of more than 6,000 supporters.

“Today our opponent brought up earmarks and frankly I was surprised that he raised the subject. I didn’t think he’d want to go there,” she said. “Our opponent has requested nearly one billion dollars in earmarks in just three years…about a million dollars for every working day. Just wait until President John McCain puts a stop to that.”

The state of Alaska has also requested hundreds of millions of dollars during Palin’s first year as Governor but she noted today that she “cut back earmarks in our state” this past year.

I should have added just what you said .......it's NOT a big issue in Alaska.

The earmark was used for other infrastructure projects. They still got the benefit.

And there is no reason Alaska should NOT get some federal assistance for roads -bridges. They have many more miles of federal roads and federal land that they have to take care of.

I can't remember the cost off hand but it was VERY expensive --double the estimate and more than double the amount they got.

It seems that the smears have graduated from kindergarten/primary schooll-level to jr. high.

It looks like SARA KUGLER, Associated Press Writer, is going for the next level of nuance (and possibly a promotion to Columnist):

Obama hasn't asked for any earmarks this year. Last year, he asked for $311 million worth, about $25 for every Illinois resident. Alaska asked this year for earmarks totaling $198 million, about $295 for every Alaska citizen.

But wait, doesn’t Illinois have 15-20 times as many people as Alaska? (and much shorter and easier distances to travel, certainly in the winter)

Palin has cut back on pork project requests, but under her administration, Alaska is still and by far the largest per-capita consumer of federal pet-project spending.

Sara, we need documentation for this, also see my previous comment.

But for balance, she writes:

The governor did reject plans to build the notorious "Bridge to Nowhere" after Congress had cut off its financing.

What has BHO rejected, other than Federal campaign matching funds (and why? The answer just might make the difference in getting a promotion)

There is, of course, a quote from BHO (not at the same educational level, but somewhat memorable):

I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she's change, and that's great," Obama said Saturday. "She's a skillful politician. But, you know, when you've been taking all these earmarks when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change. Come on! I mean, words mean something, you can't just make stuff up.” (emphasis mine).

re: #83 Pawn of the Oppressor

It's classic Fighter Pilot.

[snip]

What you said there reminds me more of large scale battlefield/sea strategy, rather than being a fighter pilot. Of course, McCain did have a military career after he was done being a pilot, which might have had much more importance than his days as a fighter pilot. And of course, the time he spent as a prisoner of war by a country which didn't follow the Geneva Conventions.

When you said fighter pilot, I thought you were going to talk about either energy and maneuverability or the decision cycle, which are both important concepts in fighter plane tactics. And yes, for the moment it looks like the McCain camp may be inside the decision cycle of the other side. What it means is to figure what options the opponent can take and to be prepared to react to each of them, or to have already reacted before the oponent takes the action. Thinking faster, essentially.

Although Palin as Gov cut back on pork barrel project requests (including the bridge), in her 2 years in office she requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation.

Obama requested $740 million over three years.

Keep in mind for the 2006 census, Alaska had approx 670,000 residents while Illinois had 12.8 million.

You know, I am still a supporter of President Bush. His foreign policy (as wishy washy as it has been lately) and Fed'l judges will be judged well years down the road.

But, I am ready for Change (r). I think McCain and Palin will be a bit more agressive in promoting their policies, and reforming big gov't then Bush has been. That is why it can be exciting now.

I agree with you in that I, too, think the current Bush will be well-received by History. He had war thrust upon his Administration, and handled it; I may not have agreed with the details of the plans as carried out, but I did, and still do, agree with him taking out Saddam. But I think all the anklebiting has worn him down. He truly is one serious lame-duck president. So I'll give Bush a break on not pushing reforms more thoroughly as he was a bit busy doing the right thing, and for that I am grateful. I am very disappointed with his policies vis-a-vis Iran, but he used up any political capital in going into Iraq, so there is none now to use. Plus, like I said, the anklebiting. He just didn't want to take on that fight, and not just Iran -- but the Congress and the media, so he's passing that troubling situtation to the next President. That is why McCain must win.
