Another Tour De Lance?

Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 7:00:15 pm PDT

Is the best cyclist of the century going to attempt a comeback? Sources: Lance Armstrong coming back.

Lance Armstrong will come out of retirement next year to compete in five road races with the Astana team, according to sources familiar with the developing situation.

Armstrong, who turns 37 this month, will compete in the Amgen Tour of California, Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphine-Libere and the Tour de France — and will race for no salary or bonuses, the sources, who asked to remain anonymous, told VeloNews.

Armstrong’s manager, Mark Higgins, did not respond to questions. And an Astana spokesman denied the report to The Associated Press. “He is no part of our team,” Astana team press officer Philippe Maertens told The AP in an e-mail. “Team Astana has no plans with him.”

However sources close to the story have told VeloNews that an exclusive article on the matter will be published in an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, expected later this month. Vanity Fair editors did not respond to requests for comment. ...

The rumor speculates that Armstrong will reunite with former team manager Johan Bruyneel at Team Astana — a viable option given Armstrong’s long-lasting relationships not only with the Belgian director but also Trek, Astana’s bike sponsor.

According to sources, the Texan will post all of his internally tested blood work online, in an attempt to establish complete transparency and prove that he is a clean athlete.

Thank God Lance is returning to competition! Since his departure, the field has been littered with the bodies of the also-rans and has-beens, doped to the gills, and ruining the repute of the sport. It takes a hero out there to bring the American public to pay attention to cycling again! He also probably realizes that he will continue to be able to cycle circles around competitors ten years younger than he.

Hmm. Sounds like Armstrong wants to do this, again, to prove he's not using drugs. But I'm not sure it will -- despite whatever measures of transparency -- satisfy his critics.

Some kinds of suspicion can't be overcome with mere facts.

Well, if he agrees to get tested up the wazoo like swimmer Dana Torres was, that's not a bad thing. Most people will see through the French MSM attacks should that happen.

39 Tigger2005  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 7:17:24pm

I love the article about Sarah Palin in the Telegraph ... isn't it interesting that BRITISH reporters are getting the real story about this woman? In their obsessive hunt for scandalous trivia to bring her down, the U.S. media are missing the big story, and doing a big disservice to their golden boy.

Frankly, I wish we could see Palin debate Obama, not Biden. Biden is going to be child's play for Palin. Not that Obama would fare much better. She would tear both of them apart.

I saw the Tour de Georgia last year. Went right past our place, heading for the killer curves. However, to be honest, it was mostly chase vehicles and when the cyclists came by I wouldn't have known Lance from Charles, or Palin.

Whoosh, and a sore neck and trying to keep my dog from being in the news.

Lasted all of two or three minutes (after the 15 minutes of police and support staff), but if Charles decides to do it I'll offer a bit of local cheer in a green plastic cup with a lizard on it.

What in heaven's name are you rambling on about, Sharmuta? Lance isn't pulling any butts out of the fire; he is a cyclist. This means: someone who rides a bicycle. Really, really fast.
And as for your obsession about France, I say this to you, Oh, Sharmuta: I see England, I see France, I see yo' momma's underpants.
Try to focus on happy thoughts, like Lance competing, in good health and with great success.

A: One is smug, self important, tells everyone else how to handle foreign matters properly, demonstrates utter incompetence when it tries to deal with an actual situation in real time, pretends to be tough yet offers surrender to any adversary that shows the slightest bit of determination.

Q: What is the difference between the French Army and the Obama campaign?

A: One is smug, self important, tells everyone else how to handle foreign matters properly, demonstrates utter incompetence when it tries to deal with an actual situation in real time, pretends to be tough yet offers surrender to any adversary that shows the slightest bit of determination.

The other marches down the Champs-Élysées every Bastille Day.

In the 18th Century, British officers wore red coats such that if their officers were hit, the troops wouldn't see the blood and get demoralized.

To this day, French officers wear brown pants...

Well, I would like to think that when we send our military men and women to fight a war, we do so because it is morally and politically right. We pray for their safety, because we know their fate is in God's hands. But it is not "God's plan" that a decision is made to wage war. God has nothing to do with this plan. It is a human plan. When you start to believe that God is commanding you to war, that becomes the justification for jihad, and the loss of rationality.

That is why it is a frightening and dangerous thing that an otherwise honourable and respected man like John McCain made the choice that he did, and undermined the credibility of his Party. If he had wanted to make a statement about true change in government, and putting an end to the divisive bipartisan politics that have often paralyzed good governance, while at the same time making a statement about women being in a position of power, he could have made a really radical and original choice and chosen Hillary Clinton to be his running mate.

Do you know any families with physically or mentally afflicted children? Would you please ask them if they would opt to eliminate that child from the family unit? Would you please ask the siblings if they would prefer to eliminate the child that is taking time from mommy and daddy that could be going to them?

My goodness, Chris. I didn't leave; it was late at night. I went to sleep.

You may think the post was a rant, and I am sorry if it sounded like that to you.

I understand my values may be different from yours. But let me be clear about this: I would never take my child out of high school, even if she were pregnant. I would never encourage (or permit) her to lie and state she was skipping school because of "mono" if she did not actually have mono. I would be sure she was educated about contraceptive choices. I would never compel her to carry a baby to term, but would support her if she did so, so that she could finish her education. I would never, ever, ever encourage a child at that age to marry, just to "legitimize" the baby. Honestly, I think God loves all children, whatever the sins of their parents.
When I saw Bristol's terrified face at the Convention, my heart went out to her, not to her mother.
And i don't insult Bristol by calling her "British" just because her name is an English city, any more than I appreciate being called "French" because my name is a French country.

Hello, Anne.

I don't mind trying that on for size. I welcome the invitation.

Your premise -- that God's plan is never war -- isn't bad. It's so good, in fact, that it's obvious. Of course God doesn't want war. Ever.

Many people do believe that God wants other things, though, like compassion, mercy, and -- yes -- peace. Sometimes those ideals require extraordinary action that, while it may resemble the 'war' that God detests, is actually compassionate, merciful and -- yes -- peaceful. Guerre faux, if memory serves.

I'm sure that you, if you are French, will appreciate a reference to Rwanda. The people of Rwanda fell to mutilation and horror -- true detestable war -- because the West withheld merciful action in an effort to maintain the status quo. Paix faux.

Thanks for reading. And apologies for the almost surely incorrect French.

re: #152 Charles

Probably not for much longer.

I worked with a French guy, dual-citizenship type who had come to the US because he couldn't find a decent job in France.

Not an insult, just a fact.

When the riots broke out in France, I kept reading (on various right wing extremist sites, including this one) about what I considered completely unacceptable atrocities ... stuff like dragging an old women off a bus and setting her on fire -- things like that.

The French guy would access the French newspapers, and confirmed all the stories. I don't do French, and don't intend to start.

He considered them "rabble rousers".
I told him we'd probably kill people that did that here.
He honestly thought that was over-reacting.

He was freaked out, totally freaked out, and surprised when Sarkozy won that election. In his view, it's the end of freedom for France, and people will soon be living under totalinarism.

Explains annfrance a lot to me, if that's representative of the country.

re: #126 annefrance

Now, try that on for size.

Honey - you have no fucking idea what you are talking about.

You are about as able to distinguish moral choices as you are able to laugh at yourself. In other words - utterly incapable.

You paint a picture of clear and extreme choices and then fault someone for making the "politically and morally" wrong choice.

As a Frenchie, you should know that rarely do the morally and politically right choice coincide. Richelieu is a name that comes to mind - and example of an exalted Frenchman who was able to dispense with morality to act solely in the interest of France (and that France being the one that benefited him and his faction in the French court).

The problem with Iraq was that the moral option had no political cover - it required one to simply say "screw the political consequences" and do what was right.

Let me put it another way - How was it "moral" for France to have participated in negotiating oil deals with Saddam while he was under sanctions? How was it moral for France to have participated in helping Saddam steal money from starving civilians when they corrupted the "oil for food" program? How can the word "Moral" be associated in any way (but the inverse) with Chirac?

I've tried it on for size - you have the moral development of an adolescent. Go along and play.

McCain goes with his gut, against much of his party, and makes a courageous and innovative choice to win, and as with the surge, he is right again.

Message to Annefrance.

Do you know why God gives us children with handicaps? Because He wants them to be loved just the way He loves all His children, everyone of us on this planet even though by our actions toward one another we must grieve Him so. We are sinful world and therefore by no means perfect and that is why there is sickness, imperfections, hatred, wars, you name it. We will not solve any of this by spitting in His face and saying, "no thanks, I dont want that kid, its not perfect, not wanted"

Thank the Lord He ensured Trig was born to Sarah and Todd where he will loved and cherished in a home that would not entertain, for a second, a termination.

Anne does not have to be troubled with being associated with French history, English history or even Canadian history. The Quebecois maintain separatist notions so they can avoid any accountability for history. This way they are unencumbered when judging others.

But things may not all be as they seem. There is certainly no point my posting here if no dialogue is possible.

You are not helping the dialog, by not responding to the reason you are being flamed and instead making lame critiques of the fact that you have pissed off many people and that you don't like the way you are addressed.

To open an opportunity for a diversion, why, if you are Canadian, do you choose to associate yourself with France, whether that is a real name or not?

296 wolfie  Mon, Sep 8, 2008 8:17:35pm

necessary:
number 1 : attract Reagan Democrats, blue collar, middle-income types,
especially those w/ 2 earner-families
number 2: attract Catholics among the above:
must be pro-life, w/ "family" image
number 3: solidify most activist part of base: must move right
esp on economic & fiscal issues
number 4: avoid VP associated w/ Bush or business-as-usual pols
desirable:
number 5: pick VP who can bring some excitement to campaign
number 6: given Obama's failure to do so, consider picking a female
number 7: someone with very strong pro-2nd amendment cred

I guess if you could get a good speaker, fine looks, a winning personality, and executive experience, too, that would be nice.

Yep. Hillary's the one all right!

Oh don't be silly! Charles explained at #243 why he's exposing where you're from and why he's posting that.
And no, of course we are not at war with France; France got wind of the fact that one or two US Congresspeople were thinking about going to war with France (because French troops had machine gunned to death unarmered citizens of the Republic of the Ivory Coast) and France promptly surrendered.
Frankly we were not only surprised but, never having declared war on France, didn't no what to do with France's offer of unconditional surrender. So we're saving it for possible later use.

Much here is simply in jest.

consider that the host of the MTV awards can call Bush "a retard" and gets applauded...
Where the media is loved by the left for pretty much raping a pregnant teen because her mother is conservative...
Where leftwing blogsites openly discuss how great an assassination would be...

Russia to send ships, planes to Venezuela

Russia announced on Monday that it will send a naval squadron and long-range patrol planes for the exercises later this year — a move that appeared retaliatory after the U.S. sent warships to deliver aid to Georgia following its conflict with Russia.

The U.S. government, however, appeared unconcerned.

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack poked fun at Russia's navy, saying if Russia really intends to send ships to the Caribbean, "then they found a few ships that can make it that far."

If I ever really do assemble hit teams to do my black bag jobs, they'll receive the following instructions:

1) Don't dress and act to show how tough you are. Black leather jackets, buzz cuts and three days of beard stubble? Uh, no. You should look like tourists, or businessmen, or hot dog vendors. Nobody should look at you and think, "hit man".

2) Yes, we should be in constant contact, but you're going to use regular Jawbone bluetooth earpieces, so you'll look like everyone else.

I'm a graphics programmer and used to frequent a forum for graphics programmers. Lots of the members were northern Europeans, from German, Norway, Sweden, et.al. About a year after 911 there were discussions on the board about going into Iraq. I defended America's right to self-defense and was had nothing good to say about muslims. I'd say that the vast majority of these posters disagreed with me, and came down on me vehemently. I stood my ground and then some by force of argument, so they were left with nothing but name calling. But lots of these people could not grasp the concept of self-defense, and seem to think I was "rassist" for coming down on muslims.

To be sure, there were others on my side, so I wasn't alone. Btw, one of the guys against me was Australian, but he came around to my viewpoint over time. So, that was pretty cool.

There were also some real pro-Americans, there, btw. There are pro-American Europeans.

re: #385 Occasional Reader

If I ever really do assemble hit teams to do my black bag jobs, they'll receive the following instructions:

1) Don't dress and act to show how tough you are. Black leather jackets, buzz cuts and three days of beard stubble? Uh, no. You should look like tourists, or businessmen, or hot dog vendors. Nobody should look at you and think, "hit man".

2) Yes, we should be in constant contact, but you're going to use regular Jawbone bluetooth earpieces, so you'll look like everyone else.

Heh. :)
And funny you should mention that; I was just looking at some comments about Jason Bourne earlier today, on some forum or another (sorry can't remember which one) and people were complaining that Matt Damon didn't look enough like a scary assassin dude. People who had actually read the book, and not just watched the movie, mentioned that Bourne was supposed to be someone who could blend in completely, a man next door kind of a person. Which is why Bourne was so successful at what he did. I'm reading the books now- they are so different from the movies...

/So, do you have any black bag jobs coming up? I could use some extra spending money. Christmas is just a few months away, you know.

re: #452 realwest

Huh, that's funny, when I went to it, it was in black mi Amiga! Charles has magic on this site.
Besides, we don't really know if that was her real e-mail anyway, do we? I mean, someone on LGF Watch did a number on me a few years back (which was actually fun to watch because someone named realwest was debating one of MY critics, and pretending to be me!) and they gave out my full name, employers name, employers snail mail addy,
my direct e-mail addy, my employers e-mail addy and my home phone number.
The only problem was that the person they identified as me wasn't me.
I always felt sorry for that poor dude whom they named as being me, though.

You're right, RW, we don't know and it's possible this was just someone's sick idea of a practical joke on the real AF. Problem is the profile does seem to match the comments. Nevertheless, she/he/it is gone now. You do have to wonder. I know you're also a lawyer. We (ok, most of us) usually try to maintain a modicum of civility in public discourse, especially if we suspect our comments can be traced back. I'm no longer with a firm so I can be a little more outspoken now but I was always very conscious of the reflections my public remarks could cast back. This one really clearly didn't give a ****.

re: #445 Archimedes

Yeah, in my experience it seems to run about 1:3 pro:anti, though a number of those 3 antis are more cynical than anti-American.

I went over to Germany in 2002 and some highlights included:

- A guy asking me a party "But why Iraq?" and at the time I had no answer because at that point, we all knew it was going to happen, but they (the "establishment") hadn't told us the rationale. Then he "zinks Bush is an esshole" and at that point the other party-goers urged him to chill out a bit.

- A serious discussion in a turkish deli in Kassel with the family village's bartender and his sister. Bartender said that really, the losses of Sep. 11th were "only two buildings" and his sister was shocked and chastised him. He didn't mean to minimize the death, but I saw his point, that it wasn't the SCALE of the destruction so much as the mental shock which caused the most damage. I told him that actually he was right, losing two office buildings in one downtown in one big city in America wouldn't even register on America's books monetarily, but it was the psychological shock that everyone was feeling which was the greatest.

- The slightly intoxicated father of one of my cousin's friends soliciting my opinion about politics and then telling me with a wave of the hand, "Yes, everone argues, but you and I know, it's just money... It's all shit, only money makes it all go around." (In light of Schroeder's taking a job at Gazpom, and what I've learned since about the Saudis shaping our State Dept. and educational curriculum, I'm inclined to agree)

- Kitchen table discussions with another of my cousin's friends, a guy who speaks English, listens to other P's of V, and sympathised with the U.S. at the time... "What if this happens in Frankfurt or Berlin, then how will we feel? We have no right to say that America shouldn't react at all."

Compared to the trash that's in the European media, I think I came away without having been abused too much. Things may be different now though, I'm afraid I'm in for it next time I go there.

The problem for movies with principle characters that look anonymous or use many disguises, is that it conflicts with stardom.

The Bourne movies are good action flicks. They strayed pretty wide and far from the books, so much so that you wouldn't have a clue that the Carlos the Jackal was principle in the first and the third book, or that the second was was mainly about a Chinese warlord trying to stir up trouble in the far-east.

The movies are star vehicles for Matt Damon. They are entertaining in their own right. The books are completely different and also very good in their own right.

Just my 2 cents.

Well yeah, actually, they were bigger than my family's village, laid down lengthwise. I think. 1100 feet end to end, roughly? I'd have to check Google Earth. Population-wise, definitely.

What he meant could be put another way: We lose as many people in traffic accidents as we did that day. And probably as many companies fail in a given week, as there were that were destroyed and/or lost office space. If it were measured by raw dollars or even dead bodiesand nothing else, we could absorb the loss without trouble, but it was such a horrid attack on so many fronts at once: not just airliners and office buildings, but on our very idea of national security, and in such a spectacular way. It was successful terrorism in that regard, in that it was an attack on the mind as well as the body of America. And that was what he was saying, that to explain our reaction it had to be understood that it was much more than just a couple of buildings at stake.

Yet, how many times were videos on the heads of terrorists shown?

That isn't just coincidence.

Here's the thing:

Most people don't want to see that video. Perhaps on very special, very somber occasions. The people on the wings -- both left and right -- embrace the notion that there's a conspiracy afoot.

Again, that's right and left.

Most people don't reside in the wings. And it's their wishes the media is following by not publishing or airing those videos and photos again and again and again. And it's not as though they're not easily accessible.

911 should be considered as a mini nuke or WMD in NYC. An aerial attack with cluster bombs over NYC would of killed more victims, but the shock of two might towers going down was very effective for the Islamists. Bush provided effective leadership for about four months and then regressed to democrat talking points. In 2007 he was got desperate and approved the surge and tactics of a proven Army.

Out of curiosity I just measured the length of my family's village in Google Earth and it's about 3,000 feet across, edge to edge.

For some reason, somebody took a picture of one of the public picnic spots at the north end of the village (Earth has a feature where local pictures can be uploaded and placed on the map for other people to see).

1. I know almost everybody in the village who would be inclined to take a picture of things like that
2. I have no idea why that spot was photographed, because nobody ever goes there
3. There is not a single picture of drunkenness, or even places where people commonly eat and/or get drunk in the village.

I'm going to have to go back through my old files and fix that little problem.

So in addition to the troofers, there's 9/11/2001 denial now, or is it all of a piece?

Soon: "They didn't kill almost 3,000 people, it was really 1,500, tops...."

Not at all? Nowhere did anybody say any such thing. Except maybe in the Arab press?

I have wondered too.

One thing that happened that day was that TV news changed forever. No one used the streaming ticker for news updates before that. Then everyone went to tem and we now have them always. Those tickers were only on stock channels before then, and only used when markets were open.

The planes plowing into the buildings was in a constant loop for about 3 or 4 days if I remember accurately. It was as if people still couldn't believe it happened. So when the video loop finally ended, most people were kinda tired of seeing it. But the complete absence since then is a little weird.

My own theory is that those who accused Bush of exploiting 9/11 won over the editorial community and they figured such images only helped the Bush administration.

No one said anything about airing those videos again and again, but I don't think "most Americans" would object to a network (they could take turns) showing them once every September 11th and those American's who don't want to see those videos won't watch. That's a pretty simple idea, but not one that the MSM apparently has ever given any thought to.

One can always turn the channel. Not showing it is censorship. And pandering to the perpetually-weak when it comes to national security Democrat party.

re: #562 christheprofessor
I don't really think they want us to forget, even the MSM isn't stupid enough to think that America will ever forget what happened on 9/11. I DO think that the MSM doesn't want to show the videos, as I implied in #561, because they are afraid Americans won't want to watch and for the video media it's all about ratings.
Plus of course it would be an annual reminder that we are in a war against terror. That we have not yet suffered another major attack on America like 9/11 is one of the things that Bush's critics won't give him any credit for at all. But those of us who can think for ourselves know, that by keeping Al-Q on the move, by not allowing them any place to set up significant training bases, recruitment "centers" and especially the time and planning needed to pull of another 9/11 type of attack Bush has in fact been responsible for preventing one. And that Bush could get something SO ESSENTIAL to America correct, just galls the hell out of them.

Right, right, right.

Except people on the left say "It's censorship! Pandering to the perpetually hawkish when it comes to national security Republican Party! We all know what happened. But they hide it because they don't want Americans to see the country brought to its knees. They want us to forget!"

Ridiculous. There is no censorship there. When the government tells us we can't publish or air the videos -- which, as I said, are accessible to any moron with a computer -- then it's censorship. Until then it's just 'pandering' to the wishes of the majority, while ignoring the spitballs from the fringes.

It's pretty arrogant of you to decide on your own that the "majority" don't want to see those images. Please cite some sources for this assertion -- because I think it's complete BS, propagated by a mainstream media that has decided to play nanny to America.

I agree with your second paragraph but not the first.

In my opinion, they recognize that we were hit hard - they just don't want us to respond, because they know what happens when we're pissed, and they are already pissed that Russia folded and there is no counter balance in their eyes.

The same journalists who support Obama today, (and they do so shamelessly), are the same ones who, after they realized nobody they know died, were silently blaming us for 9/11...

re: #487 Pawn of the Oppressor

Yeah, in my experience it seems to run about 1:3 pro:anti, though a number of those 3 antis are more cynical than anti-American.

I went over to Germany in 2002 and some highlights included:

- A guy asking me a party "But why Iraq?" and at the time I had no answer because at that point, we all knew it was going to happen, but they (the "establishment") hadn't told us the rationale. Then he "zinks Bush is an esshole" and at that point the other party-goers urged him to chill out a bit.

Germany may be better than Finland, because I've heard some stories about Finland. Then again, I know a guy who went to Denmark, and had nothing but good things to say about the Danes he met, i.e. pro-American when it came to the war and Muslims.

True, but I also had moral outrage and the desire for vengeance. Never Forgive. Never Forget.

I used to quote the movie Gladiator and add my own twist thus:

Rome is the light, everywhere else is darkness...

America is the light ...

We are the big target of Islamacists precisely because we are the light of the West. I did this also because so many of these people were vilifying the U.S.
