SC Dem Chair Brings the Ugly

Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 4:11:07 pm PDT

The word that best sums this one up is “classy.” S.C. Dem chair: Palin primary qualification is she hasn’t had an abortion.

South Carolina Democratic chairwoman Carol Fowler sharply attacked Sarah Palin today, saying John McCain had chosen a running mate “whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”  ...

Told of McCain’s boost in the new ABC/Washington Post among white women following the Palin pick, Fowler said: ”Just anecdotally, I believe that those white women are Republican women anyway."

So by analogy, does that mean that a Democrat woman's prime qualification for office must be that she has had an abortion?

6 wrenchwench  Wed, Sep 10, 2008 4:13:15pm

I believe Mr. Biden also qualifies on that basis.

What a disgusting political slap in the face to millions of American voters. As if previously winning elections as a city council woman, mayor and Governor, and her record while serving in those posts aren't qualifications! And they think the American people haven't looked into that for themselves- what idiots.

This is just proof that to the democrats- the only thing they think qualifies a woman for office is her crotch and what they've done with it. They make me sick.

The Democrats and MSM just keep on going like the energizer bunny. I have seen multiple columns by Republican analysts thanking the Dems and MSM for their juvenile and unprofessional behavior. I can't believe what Obama said yesterday about the pig. His crowd obviously knew what he was referring to. To watch Obama and the Dems self-destruct over the inclusion of a well qualified conservative female as Republican VP is the most amusing and instructive display of liberal hypocrisy in decades. They claim to the be the party of change and tolerance but they have a complete fit when conservatives field an all-star team that has shown experience, dedication, integrity and moral principles that liberals are devoid of.

Whether it’s the environment, the economy, the war or a woman’s right to choose, there are people who will cast their vote based on a single issue. That was the only point I was attempting to make."

Hi, trans!

I think what we're seeing here is the dems pull out their old standard "trump" card that's always worked on women before- abortion. I think the PUMAs and other pro-choice, independent women are not going to be fooled this time because the sexism and misogyny they're seeing from the dems is more of a turn-off than the idea of voting for pro-life candidates. The women of this country are sick of the politics of sexism, we're sick of politicians pandering to us then forgetting us once in power- and we're not going to take it anymore. A tacky, scare-monger insult like this will only strengthen the resolve of millions of American women in telling the democrat party where to shove it.

No, but according to Democrat platform, Obama's mom would definitely have been marched into the nearest PP office for a ' family planning procedure'. Teenaged, unmarried (three months into the pregnancy,) she fit all the criteria.

According to Obama I guess maybe he thinks he should have been aborted

"Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old," he said. "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information."

No, they will not. We have discussed all options and they are just disgusted with what they perceive as the takeover of the party by the extreme left wing. There was a night on CNN where Donna Brazile said the "new" party did not need white blue collar people in the new party to win as they could win with more educated whites and urban (black) voters. Big mistake on her part. Even Hillary on the ticket on top or bottom will not make them vote dem this year. My brother I doubt will ever go back but I am sure my sister will next time around if the party is purged of Pelosi, Dean, Brazile but she has mentioned that she just may register Independent. My family are all Catholic and the Black Liberation thing was a real problem with them as the church as been fighting that for years in south america and it has been discussed heavily in their parish so it didn't take them much to get pushed off the cliff by the dems anyway.

In a normal voting year, we never discuss politics. They cannot stop talking about it now.

Read this on Fox comments:

Carol Fowler and the Dark Side

So you’re thinking things are pretty messed up with the primary date scramble? However bad you may think it is, Gail Collins of the NYT sees it as even worse, at least on the Democratic side:

All the major Democratic candidates for president have signed a pledge promising they will only go to Florida or Michigan when they want to raise money.

Among the really bad ideas in the history of the Democratic Party, this ranks somewhere between butterfly ballots and William Jennings Bryan.

And that is a pretty horrible idea — Ms. Collins specifically uses the example of John Edwards slapping backs with fat cats in Miami, but having to run the other way if other voters approach him in that state (which sounds weirdly familiar). But I don’t have to go back to WJB, or even to Palm Beach madness.

To find an electoral idea that bad — actually, even worse — in the annals of the Democratic Party, I only have to go back to the putrid Loyalty Oath that S.C. Democrats almost, but not quite, required before allowing folks to vote in their primary in 2004.

And here’s where these moments of shame come together — with the name “Fowler.” As I recall it was Don Fowler, Carol’s husband, who thought the Great Loyalty Oath Crusade was a keen idea four years ago. He thought it wise to disenfranchise me and any other South Carolinians who would not swear to already being a Democrat. (So much for “growing the party,” huh?)

“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so.” Ronald Reagan

I clumsily was making a point about people in South Carolina who may vote based on a single issue. Whether it’s the environment, the economy, the war or a woman’s right to choose, there are people who will cast their vote based on a single issue.

And, darnit, if they're going to be single-issue, it has to end in voting for our side. Then I'd have no problem with it at all.

Actually I was looking at the sneer, the set of the jaw, and the particular expression. When you meet someone looking like that in the South, you know you are dealing with someone of low and malicious cunning.

Other people from the South might want to chime in, but I've seen that expression before a lot when my parents were stationed in NC. Think James Carville.

Fear mongering- that's what the left is having to resort to. So much for change we can believe in.

It's always worked in the past- scare the women into voting dem because they scare us by dangling the abortion card in front of us. But this election is different. Women across this country are now seeing how deeply seeded the politics of misogyny is, and they want it gone. The dems keep playing the same tune not realizing the crowd's move on to another venue, so their only option is to crank the volume of sexist rhetoric. Blowback's a bitch.

For all those dems who think that Biden will be out of the big 0 campaign and Hillary will be in soon, based on the comments Biden made today about how Hillary is better qualified to be a vice-president, I have to reasons why this is a bad move:

1. It shows poor judgment, not about picking Hillary, but about not picking Hillary the first time. To change midstream shows pandering and weakness.

2. Hillary will mobilize the right AGAINST nObama more than Palin mobilized the right FOR McCain. The votes she would pick up from the women that have switched will have an opposite reaction for those that don't like Hillary because she is who she is, a Clinton.

So, good luck!

Charles,

Here is one of the best articles, about Sarah Palin and the losing strategy of the Libs' attack, I've ever read:
Camille Paglia of Salon.com

An excerpt:

It is nonsensical and counterproductive for Democrats to imagine that pro-life values can be defeated by maliciously destroying their proponents. And it is equally foolish to expect that feminism must for all time be inextricably wed to the pro-choice agenda. There is plenty of room in modern thought for a pro-life feminism...

There are several layers of apology.

In order, from biggest asshole to smallest:

1) "No apology. In fact, you owe ME one."
2) "No apology. That's me being honest, and honest is good, right? You wouldn't want me to lie about who I am, would you?"
3) "I'm sorry others took it that way."
4) "I'm sorry I said it so that others took it that way."

6) "I'm sorry."

With any luck young men and women will look at the failed hypocricy of the current Democrats on issues of race and gender and decide not to go down the same dead end that Fowler and Obama choose. That or he's pandering. I'm going to guess pandering, because after a comment like that, it will be difficult to leave the campaign because it's too obvious. They can't claim "health" or some such because biden himself already made a case for Hill. I think it would bite 0bama in the ass to dump his veep and pick Hill simply to gain the PUMAs back. The VP selection is the first hint at how a presidential candidate makes decisions- he can't back away from biden now- it would say he can't make good executive decisions. Do they think they can afford to because they've been effectively laying the groundwork to steal this election with their get out the (dead, prison, multiple and illegal) vote?

After all, the "community organizer" has had lots of experience with Chicago-style politics and voter registration - and ACORN.

And they have the lesson of the 2000 election.

Yes, I fully expect Ohio to be stolen because of the new instant registration and absentee ballot law. The Democrats assume they have a 5-10 point cushion from vote fraud.

South Carolina Democratic chairwoman Carol Fowler sharply attacked Sarah Palin today, saying John McCain had chosen a running mate “whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.” ...

Perhaps Carol would be so kind as to suggest which one of Palin's five kids she should have aborted.

McCain - please free Sarah! She keeps regurgitating the same words from last Wed night. Let this lady shine!

Now I read an article in the "Alaska Daily News" that Sarah will join him again on Sat and they will campaign together for weeks.

Does this many sense to anyone? Is John afraid that Sarah will draw larger crowds than he? This lady should have her fighting chance on the road and with the press. Let her take certain states and let McCain take certain states and cover them from East-West, North-South.

This will be the MAJOR news story next week : why doesn't McCain let her go out on her own? What are they hiding? Going to bite them in the butt, big time. I thought McCain was smarter than this.

Sam Reed in WA is doing a lot of work to that end after '04.

Reed notes there have been 180 changes to state election law and 1,100 administrative rule changes, "all designed to give you confidence in the accuracy and integrity of this process we all hold dear."

[snip]

Since 2006, more than 450,000 voter registrations were canceled; of those, nearly 95,000 were ineligible felons or dead, and almost 55,000 were canceled because they duplicated registrations that already existed. The rest were people who moved out of state, asked to be removed, or had not voted in the years covering two federal general elections.

So now, is it okay for employers to disqualify women for jobs if they have kids, and if any of the kids have health concerns or special needs, and if they do, it's okay to inquire during the interview process why they didn't abort it?

I am wondering if this long election cycle has run for the Democrats disadvantage. The American media has not helped the process one bit by anointing Obama as the "Chosen one" and refusing to ask even the simplest basic questions of his ideology and associate for the last 18 months whilst transforming themselves into pit-bulls when Palin is announced as McCain's running mate. Hillary would of won the Democrat nomination if the media had done its job professionally and ethically. They chose not to. The Democrats nominated a very weak, extremely liberal politician who cannot win if he reveals his true ideology and aspirations. The Republican's meanwhile have laid it on the line with McCain's heartfelt acceptance speech. Obama is in a death spiral and the media spin machine has the controls locked....

Isn't that what women's rights was about - that women aren't just uteruses? Well it turns out Democrat women are weirdly obsessed with Palin's reproductive history.

So now, is it okay for employers to disqualify women for jobs if they have kids, and if any of the kids have health concerns or special needs, and if they do, it's okay to inquire during the interview process why they didn't abort it?

re: #383 loflyer

I believe that there were plenty of Democratic Party members in the media who wanted to avoid the embarrassment of having the Clintons back in power, and who figured that since whoever the Democratic candidate was in 2008 was destined to win anyway, they might as well see to it that the Black guy got the nod.

They misjudged two things -- first, Hillary did have a bloc of Democratic voters who liked her, and second, Obama is a completely empty suit. The first error led to a massive schism in the Democrat Party, and the second error led to the political miscalculation that the schism wasn't going to cost the nominee any votes, as well as the political tin ear that the candidate displays when talking about and to anyone "beneath" him on the socioeconomic scale.

I see a non-problem. Not saying you are deliberately parroting a Democratic line but I do think it will be a coming talking point for their troops and as such a fraud whereby they try again into stampeding the Republicans into taking orders from the DNC. For the next couple of weeks McCain and Pallin have to hit a half dozen states repeatedly until the Democrats hemmorage electoral votes. IF McCain and his pro-team choose not to dissipate his messagfe then I'd go with his judgement. The idea of a second team of surrogates does appeal to me. That would be the Republican Ranger squad of the convention speakers Meg Whitman, Carly Fiorina, Giuliani, Romney, Hunter, Thompson, Steele. Better in a pack I'm thinking.

re: #404 protestshooter

In a way, I almost feel sorry for them.

I was thinking philosophically on the drive home. The DNC's whole campaign has been a caricature of their platform in a nutshell.

Think along the lines of quotas. In the primaries, you have a number of people applying for a job. Some you could argue, for that ticket applied with qualifications. Others applied, without the minimum requirements, and still got the interview.

In the process, the powers that be were doing their best to influence the outcome, and you have someone in the driver's seat with no business being there. There is no way, he can live up to the expectations of the job.

He is in over his head, failing, and it will be society's fault. It will be the system that never gave him a chance, despite his inability.

Apropos.

Whether it’s the environment, the economy, the war or a woman’s right to choose, there are people who will cast their vote based on a single issue. Know what the funniest part of this is? It is Lola Ogunnaike referring to the gun in the fake picture as an AK-47, when it is actually a Crosman pellet gun LOL.

re: #425 rightymouse

I left the Democrat Party in 2001 after 9/11 and I'm NEVER going back. They are barking nutters.

I was born Republican ... voted Ford in a mock school election when I was 10...endured 4 years of Carter ... thrilled when Reagan was elected in '80 ... and cast my first vote for him in '84. I then voted Bush I. But I got a bit disenchanted with the GOP when Rush Limbaugh came on the scene and the evangelicals appeared to be taking over the party. It seemed like Republicans were becoming caricatures of themselves. Reagan never had to be nasty, like Rush, to make a point, and I never felt with Reagan that one had to be religious to be conservative or Republican. Also, I honestly felt that Clinton/Gore would be better able to advance America's interests and values in the post Cold War world.

I guess the relative prosperity and peace of those years blinded me to Clinton's faults. I voted for him again in '96, and for Gore in '00. I probably would have voted for Bush in '03, but although I thought he had handled 9/11 and the aftermath well, I had been unsure of the wisdom of attacking Iraq and by that time, postwar Iraq was a mess. I really didn't care too much for either candidate but punched the card for Kerry.

It wasn't until I discovered LGF that I began to understand just how badly misinformed I was by the mainstream media. I began to regret my votes for Gore and Kerry almost immediately and giving thanks that they'd lost anyway. And I realized that, even though I still don't much care for Rush or for some Republicans' views on some issues, I can generally depend on Republicans to NOT be traitorous, defeatist, appeasing, tax-and-spend, Commie bastards. Oh, there are plenty of them that suck on various issues like energy policy and immigration and controlling spending, and I don't like it that quite a lot of them support I.D. in schools, and I hate Bush's sucking up to the Saudis and lack of a firm response to Russia's invasion of Georgia, and so on. But the Democrats have gone completely over to the dark side. They simply don't represent American values of any kind at all anymore. They are traitors, pure and simple.

I'm 54, lived through the 70' 80's and beyond (obviously!)...believe me, there are a LOT of women who were sold the "abortion is ok" meme, and are suffering emotionally today. Three of my very close friends had abortions over 30 years ago, and still talk about what a bad decision it was, and would have done things differently if they knew the emotional consequences. These women will NOT vote for someone just based on "a woman's right to choose"; and the more the dems push abortion, the more it pushes them AWAY from the democratic party. so..Dems, women aren't as easy to pigeonhole as you think we are! And I think this is a BIG reason for Sarah Palin's popularity....she chose what was right for HER and for HER family. And many women admire her for the choice that SHE made.

The only tactic he can pursue that stands any chance is to stay on message...a message of hope, that things can be better, he's the change you've been waiting for, ---huh, come again, are you ever going to say anything that actually means something?

OK, we'll make America energy independent, by developing wind, and solar, and mandating 20% of energy from solar in 4 years, up from 0.2 percent. That's an increase of a bit less than 5 percent per year, perfectly doable, and don't you dare say my arithmetic is off, because that's just racist. Any talk about how a thousandfold increase in solar cell production takes more than 4 years is racist. Racist! RACIST!

466 hippieforlife  Wed, Sep 10, 2008 7:58:20pm

I've come in late so I apologize in advance if this has been said.

All I can see right now is both sides completely involved with excusing bad behavior with previous bad behavior.

However, I am also seeing many in the democratic party making excuses for everything. "I said that so and so is a total ass".
When presented with what they said, it becomes, no - no -no.
What I meant was "so and so is a total asset". Bah!

They just keep making themselves looking dumber and dumber. This woman knew exactly what see was saying and she did it with malice and forethought. Her apology, if possible, was even worse.

This whole ugly topic of abortion should never have become a mere political talking point. Ask any woman who has ever been in a position where she had to make a decision of that magnitude and she will tell you that it is hell. I am pro-choice because I have never felt that I had any business telling another woman what her moral decisions should be. That does not mean that I am "pro-abortion".

This woman should immediately resign her current position with democratic politics. This type of dialogue is exactly why I have remained a strong republican since I cast my first vote in 1971.

The candidates need to talk about America and our people, not trash good people.

I think a McCain/Palin win will be worth it just to watch these filthy elitist jackholes dig frantically at the bottom of the barrel for the next four years.

I see that drudge has a link with Matt Damon comparing the Sarah Palin to a very bad Disney movie.

Don't these guys remember how well their "helping" John Kerry turned out?

Is the rumor true that Biden tried to perform a healing today?

OK. I wasn't going to login. I was just going to read some comments and call it a night and then I read your comment and was immediately transported back in time almost 30 years ago to a place where a bunch of drunken idiot college boys (me and my friends) would sit around and watch Rev. Ernest Angley heal people on WGN. Too funny!

Yes. A word that can and should be avoided. BTW, wouldn't you like to be able to refer family and friends,
maybe youngins' too - to this site ? I can't anymore
and it's sad. There was a time...

I said it thought it was a bit weird .. Joe Klein, Excitable Andy, Steve Benen, Josh Marshall and E.J. Dionne .. all singing the same song. Something about honor.

Now I get it ...

Another party I'm not invited to. And you aren't either: Vlogging fogey lashes out at ur-whippersnapper Ezra Klein, upon learning that Klein has created a private Townhouse-like email group where liberal bloggers and editors hash out issues before they let the public in on the discussion.

Apparently, it was a social event by Kub Klein covered by Memeorandum.

I wonder if they sung Kumbaya before they broke up for the evening.

...but seriously, wouldn't this be a nice resource to point friends and family to since this is THE place for unbiased news ? There are still many folks still stuck on the old CBS/NBC/ABC/New York Times for their news, especially older folks not PC savvy (although many are interested and trying). Personally, I's like to send a link to my mom so she can, in turn, send it to her Seniors AARP voting block retirees. They are a very large voting block and many are stuck on AARP's politics and the MSM still. They want the new "Uncle Walter" (ya'up for that Charles ?) and what they get is "The View", MSNBC, CNN etc. in their cable line up - not to mention the AARP message (hardly conservative). Don't know about your mom or Aunt Sally by with mine the "C" word doesn't go over well. I would be way beyond mortified if I sent them a link only to find down the page in post #763 the "C" word or "C.S./M.F. etc., Not a prude here either but what I say in the company of my friends is not the way I would repeat same when speaking to Aunt Sally. Just one mans opinion on the matter. If no one else feels the same I'll just shut up and drop the matter - will have to look elsewhere for reference links for friends and family and keep my affiliation to myself. Again, it wasn't always like that here.

The phrase "A women's right to chose" rankles me.

Choice?

The right person is never asked.

Or in Sarah Palin's case by the love in her heart she asked Trig and she heard him.

God bless her.

Yeah and consider the irony of words I have seen used --NOT by posters or bloggers but in the PRESS --that Governor Palin is "uncultured and white trash."

I have yet to hear anything out of the governor's mouth as narrow minded, judgmental, intolerant and trashy as I have heard from all the elitists who want to believe they are so liberal minded.

The interesting choice of word in his comment is PUNISHED with a baby.

I have never heard ANYONE describe a baby as "punishment" before.

Saddled with responsibility they might not be prepared for? Yes. Losing out on some of the teen years? Yes. Lots of words he COULD have used --but who on earth thinks that a baby --even an unplanned or for that matter one with a disability is a PUNISHMENT.

A burden maybe but a punishment? I find that word extremely troubling to define a baby as a punishment.

And that goes double for Jews. I'm a Jew, and I live in NYC. You ought to see the faces on other Jews when I tell them I'm voting for McCain/Palin. It's as if I had just told them that I cooked a baby and ate it for lunch.

Oh, I know. You wouldn't believe the hostility I get around the kiddush table at my Orthodox synagogue, from people you'd think would know better.

re: #456 lostlakehiker

This is the biggest problem the Obama campaign has. With friends like that, does he even need enemies?

He's about maxed out the throw-em-under-the-bus trick. Can't afford to defend it. Can't make it go away, because it bubbles up from somewhere in the sewer that passes for the dem id these days.

Racist! RACIST!

We'll put the production in New Pennsylvania, and spread the rest out over the other 56 states, including East Dakota, West Carolina, and Old York.

I fear the followers. . .

Yep, and notice that Carol Fowler's non-apology " apology" just happens to contain DNC talking points in the bargain. It's an insincere gesture - forced by the O, no doubt.

Both Fowlers should be banished from public service for their vile and disgusting remarks this past week, but let them spew forth until the election. They're gifts that just keep on giving, and the higher they climb, the more they expose their back sides to discerning voters.

As to Don Fowler, for his despicable comments re Gustav, God, and DEM fortunes, well, people here in LA died during and after the storm, and he finds it humorous, thinking that God sent this killer just to boost the DNC (he's a former head of DNC) by spoiling the RNC's convention.

Expose this, MSM! Do your real jobs and let the voters know just who and what these people are. First infanticide, now what, coerced abortions? Both amount to murder and are associated with former German fascism!

For his repulsive remarks, may Don be so lucky to one day find himself lashed to a tall pine tree on Horn Island in the Gulf of Mexico (MS) to face the wrath of God as a Camille or Katrina rolls in on him. Should he survive, he'll sing Amazing Grace and truly know humility - the rest of his days!

A for his wife, she's too clever by half and was most probably speaking on qualifications for office, based solely on her own "personal" history. Contrast her with Shara Palin and let the US public decide - it will be very easy, and it's coming soon!

These people are void of souls! The DEMS as a Party are truly on the brink and they're to smart to know it.

How do we know that the McCain campaign is more competent then other Republican ones? The new ad! We've heard and read about Obama sending slimeball lawyers, investigaters, etc to Alaska to try to dig up dirt on Palin (remember when the Democrats checked which movies Clarence Thomas rented?...or NYT trying to get Roberts kids adaption records?).
I thought "well, those 10% undecided voters will never know this.

Powerline links to a TV ad. It's pretty good. It specifically mentions Obama trying to destroy Palin.

490 Morganfrost  Thu, Sep 11, 2008 6:24:03am
South Carolina Democratic chairwoman Carol Fowler sharply attacked Sarah Palin today, saying John McCain had chosen a running mate “whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.” ...

Told of McCain’s boost in the new ABC/Washington Post among white women following the Palin pick, Fowler said: ”Just anecdotally, I believe that those white women are Republican women anyway."

Stupid, evil, fascist, jerk-wad, white racist bitches! Why won't they support us?!

Have a sneaking suspicion that attempts at verbal or physical obstructions (especially toward the elderly, those least likely to support Obama and most easily approachable by stormtroopers intent on intimidation) of polling precincts in November will go above and beyond the normal scope of such tactics. One hopes security elements will be in place or within earshot/phoneshot to ensure a fair accounting of all registered bodies. That's "bodies" independent of the all important deceased vote of course.
