9/11 Presidential Forum

Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 5:05:21 pm PDT

Now airing on most cable channels, John McCain and Barack Obama at the 9/11 Presidential Forum. Here’s a thread to dissect the proceedings.

C-SPAN has a live web stream, in WMV or Real Player format.

CNN has a better Flash-based stream.

UPDATE at 9/11/08 6:05:58 pm:

Interesting; Obama’s faulting Bush for not pushing national service after 9/11, and instead telling Americans to “shop.” But unless I’m mistaken, one of the most polarizing, dangerous, and destabilizing issues during the Vietnam War was the draft.

Also known as: national service.

Has the draft become a leftist cause?

For awhile there I thought McCain wasn't going to answer the first question. Glad to hear it was a sound problem!

Ooh, good point there - you worked with Evan Bahy (D) (sp?) to institute a service policy.

Heh - get that "Maverick" meme out there.

10 lifeofthemind  Thu, Sep 11, 2008 5:09:05pm

The Latin American actions mentioned on the last thread are very serious, 19th century actions prior to formal commencement of hostilities.

11 Just_Saying  Thu, Sep 11, 2008 5:09:22pm

I missed the intro.... is Obama in a "cone of silience" ?

Q: Can we get you a glass of water?
Q: Do you get frustrated when the Republicans lie about you?
Q: What is the web page if our viewers want to learn more or send money?

31 Intrepid  Thu, Sep 11, 2008 5:14:31pm

I'm seriously wondering if the sound cut out is a "tech glitch" or not.

Most of McCain's answers were silent, because of the "sound glitch". Which I'm sure will be "fixed" by the time Obama is up.

Whew!

As things stand, RIGHT NOW, according to the most recent polls for each state (as seen on realclearpolitics), McCain would win with 270 electoral votes vs. 268 for Obama. Talk about close!

Of course the polls may be all bogus, but even if they aren't, we'd still win. (And if they are bogus, there's a 98% chance they're slanted toward the Democrats anyway.)

As I understand it there is a 6 second delay imposed by the original broadcasters to prevent possible "foul language".... supposedly if someone yells from the audience they censor it.

It sounds a lot more to me like they're censoring McCain's responses. You don't hear any shouting before or after the silence. In his first response it made him look a bit of a moron. And you definitely don't hear any applause.

I'd be willing to bet there's a lot more applause and a lot less intermittent silence for the Messiah.

Today I had the unusual frustration of listening NPR and CNN. (I rarely bother anymore.) The MSM approach to the election is to focus on whether McCain/Palin SHOULD win, and whether Obama/Biden CAN win.

Suppose they sell it to a buyer who certifies he won't resell it to the USA. That just means that another seller has oil left to sell to the USA.

You are right on target. It needs a thread, and it is far more vital than this lame assed service forum.
Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia have given 72 hour notice, ejecting our Ambassadors.

Oil, yes. Announcement by OPEC of production slowdown. Russian, South American, North Korea, Iran acting in concert, to carry out a secret compact? No, it isn't paranoid or impossible--read history, such understandings have happened and alliances forged numerous times in history.

Look for new belligerency, action from Russia (oil again). Oil is the carrot, Oil Famine is the stick, perhaps nukes are the currency of exchange? Of course, hegemony of the "international people's revolution" is the goal--but on the way to that, the U.S. is the target.

I assume the undead one has New Mexico flipping for McCain, based on the current Rasmussen #s. Real Clear has that averaged in, but not enough to flip the state.

New Mexico, Colorado and Michigan are all teetering on the brink. On the other side I am expecting Ohio to be stolen.

AlGore would have punted 9/11 to Europe/UN once he heard the plot was coordinated by Atta out of Hamburg.

We would have more friends in Europe as a result. And many, many more dead Americans.

I prefer living Americans.

Trains, too--underutilized. Use the trains for quick, mass numbers, with the buses at debarkation for multiple destination transport inland.

Remember troop trains? Huge numbers of people can move, quickly, it just takes a plan and leadership.

If you have to do it, then it is not voluntary. If you get paid, then it is a job. If you have to do it for low pay, then it is involuntary servitude.

There's also an imbalance between Republicans and Democrats in the military too. The military votes overwhelmingly for Republicans. Why don't more progressives serve?

I was a Democrat when I served. Met a few officers who were Dems, but not many. Most thought I was weird for being in because I was from California - they didn't know about the "D".

I joined because my dad and uncles served in WWII. Even a couple of aunts served. They are all dead now except for my dad. Each funeral with a flag on the casket.

I didn't leave the Democrats - they left me.

It's a volunteer force...I guess if you don't believe in any use of force EVER, you can opt out.

I will be the first to tell you that I signed up for the draft as required, but I turned down a full military scholarship based on advice from my father and uncle, both career military (though radically different careers). My father offered to pay my way through college, a which point I could join if I wished. The USAF offered me a crummy job so I declined.

Now, though, I am ready for an old guy draft. I am 45 and will bring my own weapons if they like. ;)

Is this a priority issue? A govt work corps? It's not the WPA, you know.

It is a feeble attempt to appeal to nonexistent sense of duty and patriotism among the proles.
It is also an infuriating moral equivalence that is now entirely unchallenged:
1) being a social worker equals 5 years of torture as a POW or even death fighting for America
2) being a community organizer is just a worthy as being a Navy flier
3) draw the veil across what a community organizer is--especially Barack, who trained and radicalized the cadres

lame assed, blind and smug. yup. I gotta stop grinding my teeth...

What we learned from Katrina? Don't depend on government for everthing. Just cuz they pass out the cheese doesn't mean their gonna save your ass.

I've never understood where it was the Federal governments responsibility to jump right in there and save everyone. I had always believed it was the cities, counties (parish), or states responsibility, in that order. On the first order, it is the individual citizens responsiblity which includes things like evacuating when asked, taking the necessary supplies with you when evacuating, etc.
I also believe it should include such things as individuals moving dead bodies to a more private place, not leaving them in view for days and complaining about President Bush not removing the dead.

One day we needed to move some display boxes so I suggested we ask one of them to come over and help. The Supervisor got very flustered and said "Oh no, you can't ask him to do anything, he's a Volunteer." I responded, "So what?" I was a volunteer, so were most of us. She repeated "No" that he was a Volunteer, a Paid Volunteer and consequently could not be asked to work.

I don't worry about what other countries think. I'm not poll driven. The focus has to be on what we are doing and why. If countries agree, support, and follow us - great. If they don't, then that tells me a lot about them. If they oppose us, then I also know where they stand and can act accordingly.

I will not go out of my way to help or support those nations who do not support us or work against us. The issue is not the number of friends, but the quality of the friends.

243 Eric Blair  Thu, Sep 11, 2008 5:51:36pm

I am a bit skeptical about this forum which turns remembrance of the 9/11 attack into boosting "public service", because this can mean anything. There is no equivalence between military service, which is greatly needed to prevent other attacks, to "community organizing", which seems to be the bright new name for old-fashioned machine politics.

Good point. The left/liberals screamed bloody murder at our military because of the draft and used it as a lightning rod to rally the youth.

Yes- because then they think that Americans would demand less international military involvement.

And about the shopping- President Bush was trying to make sure our economy stayed strong. If he hadn't done that, they would now attack him for not shoring up our economy. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't with these people. If our economy had not stayed strong- the cost of the war would be hitting us even harder.

Has the draft become a leftist cause?

Yes. Rangel and others introduced bills in every year since 2003 calling for a draft. The rationale - not enough people are angry at the Administration and marching. They can't recreate 1968-72. What's missing is the draft. With an all volunteer military - this doesn't touch everyone. With a Draft, everyone 18-28 is potentially touched - therefore more to participate, protest, and march.

What I find interesting listening now to C-Span is that yesterday as he made that Palin pig lipstick remark, the tone of his voice in the 30 seconds leading up to the remark he sounded like Jesse Jackson, with that black lilit at the end of each word.

Here, he is talking with very eloquent enunciation, and not doing the Jesse Jackson lilt. Oprah has the same tendency, when she wants to "emphasize" something she goes into her "black" twang, as if it's hip to talk black.

Michelle's Boot Camps For Radicals

"Our alumni are more than twice as likely as 18-34 year olds to . . . engage in protest activities," Public Allies boasts in a document found with its tax filings. It has already deployed an army of 2,200 community organizers like Obama to agitate for "justice" and "equality" in his hometown of Chicago and other U.S. cities, including Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York, Phoenix, Pittsburgh and Washington. "I get to practice being an activist," and get paid for it, gushed Cincinnati recruit Amy Vincent.

For one year they get $1700 a month plus another $5000 after finishing....only toward education.

Great, that's what SS told me if I worked every day of my life till 65. However if I claimed disability (Which I could do legitmately), I would earn 1900 a month right here and now for the rest of my life from SS. This is a fracked up instution.

Oh no it isn't! The spirit of Unions is to do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and to ensure the standard is set to the lowest common denominator.

The lowest common denominator quote is direct from the Union President I am oh so blessed to spend most of my working life.

re: #319 ArmyWife

I think there is a place for public service, but no, its not like and never will be like serving in the military. It takes incredible to courage to put your life on the line to save the lives of others - especially protecting the likes of Pelosi and the Code Pink dingalings with as much fervor as those of us that get it.

So, to all those on this board who serve and have served, thank you.

I agree. But, there could be a place for an organization like the WPA or CCC in today's world. A lot of public work could be achieved and people without skills would receive training and experience in useful trades. Most national and state parks constructed during the depression were built using this labor force and the work performed was awesome and are still standing as good as new.

re: #108 Joan

Of course, hegemony of the "international people's revolution" is the goal--but on the way to that, the U.S. is the target.

re: #377 Charles

The interesting thing to me is that Obama's faulting Bush for not pushing national service, and instead telling Americans to "shop." But unless I'm mistaken, one of the most polarizing, dangerous, and destabilizing issues during the Vietnam War was the draft. Also known as, national service.

Paid volunteers, we call them employees.

How about we call them volunteers then employees, and roll them up into the government. Much easier to be sure they voluntarily do what they are told.
We can then give them raises with the justified tax increases.

It's an old arguments that the size of government displaces the private sector, but the age of the argument has never been deemed a determinant of fact.

An honest debate....I would really enjoy a true debate.
Why is he refusing a face to face?

A civilian counterpart to the military is not the State Department, nor is it he Department of Agriculture. The military doctrine specifically has a civil affairs component which serves that need. A military action cannot espouse any post stabilization conflict of interest. He really needs to learn what the military needs and does in the "civil" aspect and more importantly why.

He would be a unwise C in C.

I agree with the ROTC on campus. It has courses that are good in teaching leadership principles, Military History and provides exposure to activities which can provide camaraderie and fun. No, you do not have to be in the military, but you can learn about it. More importantly, you can learn about the type of people who join.

How does a president who never served in the Military, inspire others to serve?

Aren't they called "Chickenhawks"?

So, did the "technical glitch" get taken care of before the Messiah descended upon the stage? I just got back from the campaign office and only caught the very end.

re: #528 karmic_inquisitor

I like the idea and it has romantic appeal, but the govt then did not have a problem with saying "put a Dam here" or "build a road there".

Can't happen today.

Environmental Impact Reports.

And only a small set of people are qualified to do them and they take a lot of time to complete. So your "workforce" sits around.

Barry hasn't thought it through.

Interesting point, but this seems like a surmountable obstacle. I suspect that many of the projects on the ASCE Report Card are pretty uncontroversial, especially as many of them are repairs rather than new projects.

McCain is, I believe, the only one of this year's Republican candidates who has been in he military. Huckabee, Giuliani, Thompson, Romney. None of them have been in the military. Would they be unable to inspire people to serve too?

Non military service. 2 years of indoctrination and activism, and if they need to they canset up an alternative military, like a Party SS.

The Red Guards. Zealous, righteous, ideological monsters. "Eat the Rich!"

Obama and the nutroots left would love to see the reinstatement of a draft, because it's the only thing that could get the selfish and apathetic young to actually work for them, because their own asses would then be on the line.

BTW: I voluntarily enlisted. In 1974.

580 Arkay  Thu, Sep 11, 2008 8:02:17pm

Has the draft become a leftist cause?>

Of course it has. It's all about making poor, stupid white redneks do what the leftists tell them to do. At minimum wage.

Pardon my French, but f--k that.

581 tradewind  Thu, Sep 11, 2008 8:09:03pm

I flew MAC charters, both when I was newly hired, and later in Desert Storm. The difference in quality of the military personnel was stark: late '70's were often sloppy, rude. illiterate, sullen, you name it. The men and women I came in contact with a decade later going to the ME and returning were intelligent, polite, dedicated, and a pleasure, on the whole, to serve.
Puts the draft right into context for me.

re: #377 Charles

Forcing people to serve in the military also was known as conscription, and it caused much of the rage and energy directed by young men against the Vietnam War.

Obama really is an authoritarian statist. His paramilitary government employees are reminiscent of the commissars used by the Communist Party to maintain social order in the Soviet Union. Anyone who doesn't understand the similarities is asking for trouble.

It depends on who is compelled to serve in the draft and who is served by the draft.

Barack Obama: Call to Service in Colorado Springs, CO - July 2nd, 2008.

For the Left, "service" to the community, AKA the "state", is a sacrament.
Selling service to the community is what a Community Organizer does.

Charles

To answer your question, yes the draft has become a leftist cause.

[Link: www.govtrack.us...]

There is a new bill to be debated to put the draft into effect but I can't find it, I heard it mentioned on Quinn and Rose Pittsburgh's news talk.
[Link: warroom.com...]

The skinny was that it is easier for Democrats to gain support to oppose a war with drafted soldiers than those that chose to serve which you pointed out in Vietnam.

This is true. A liberal friend revealed the very tactic when we got into a heated discussion a couple of weeks ago.Yes, the extreme left actually WANT a draft in order to foment and consolidate hatred of country.btw, judging by her calculated action of sending her son to college in Canada, this is a sample of what the elitist mob will do to protect their own.The bitter commoners will serve to be used as cannon fodder. More twisted Marxist bs.

Yes. Next Question?

BH0 can take his mandatory government service and move to Cuba, or North Korea, or some other socialist/communist paradise.

I am a free citizen, not a slave, and the government exists to serve US, the people, not vice versa.
