G*d rest Officer George Howard, Firefighter Drew "Bronc" Pearsall, and 342 other Brothers.

My own personal memory of That Day:

I stopped at Mercy Hospital on Long Island when I got off from work because I wanted to donate blood which I thought would be needed in the rescue effort. The nurse told me I could not donate because they had had so many donors during the day that they had run out of collection bags. They had called other hospitals for bags but there was not a single bag to be had in the entire tri-state area.

It was at that moment I knew that, whatever kind of war this was, we would win it because our enemy would never have such a problem.

/G*d bless all who live in the the light and may His Angels cast into Hell Satan and all the Evil spirits who wander about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

re: #16 Charles

Yes, it's taking way too long to rebuild. But those twin searchlights say, "In your face, jihadis."

A friend of mine works for the FBI and he and some others were sent to Afghanistan right after 9/11 into friendly/buyable warlord territory.

They organized teams that would go out and basically hunt down and kill Taliban leaders. They were given a stack of shoulder patches by the NYPD and NYFD when they left. Unofficially, the teams would place a patch in the mouth of each Taliban they killed as a calling card.

It was very effective psychologically.

In the months after 9/11, just about everyone in this country was willing to do such things to express our resolve.

In subsequent years, we outsourced our resolve to the Army and Marine Corps, and then had guys like Murtha turn on them.

I'd like to go back to "in your mouth" rather than "in your face".

But I also understand that this is the best we can do now.

re: #7 karmic_inquisitor

It's coming. It's taking time, but it's coming. I wish there was more urgency to rebuild, but the NYC bureaucrats and politicos simply couldn't get out of the way of the guys who build stuff like Larry Silverstein.

Like him or hate him, Silverstein is the only one out of the whole bunch who rebuilt one of the fallen towers as promised - doing it on spec - 7WTC - with no tenants signed beforehand.

Bloomberg was calling it a folly. He couldn't be more wrong.

7WTC is a huge success and is practically fully occupied.

The former Deutsche Bank building is still standing as a hulking ruin - thanks to the LMDC.

Fiterman Hall still stands - thanks to CUNY and Bloomberg.

The Port Authority is finally handing over the site to Silverstein to build, which is about time. Freedom Tower is going up, as the foundation work continues. The bathtubs have been built and prepped.

The memorial construction is also underway.

I only wish there were still more urgency in rebuilding so that more could have been built out by now, but a big problem is the local residents want to sleep at night, so work has to stop and start according to a set schedule. There were no such restrictions in rebuilding the pentagon, which was a 24/7 effort with multiple shifts to rebuild within 9 months.

It took nearly that long for the debris to be carted away so that they could start piecing together what to do next at Ground Zero.

Let's remember - McCain was GREAT tonight. Even though the moderators were obviously in the tank for Obama. Mac came out with "straight talk" and spoke from his heart and experience, whereas Obama had the opportunity to see the questions McCain was asked.

In a flat out debate - one on one - McCain will out do Obama.

And Sarah's interview with Gibson? It's becoming more and more obvious that it was a sandbag job. He asked her questions, tough ones, that no one has ever asked Obama, with the allowance of keeping on topic.

It will all even out. Then Sarah and Mac will come back out and give speeches together in Pennsylvania and Ohio and Missouri, and they will wow the crowd just as they did before.

My favorite Charlie Gibson moment:

Wrapping up his interview with Curt Shilling after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, Charlie Gibson says congratulations, great to have you with us yada yada and Shill says ""And make sure you tell everybody to vote, and vote Bush next week."

Old Charlie Boy was beside himself.

77 ciaospirit  Thu, Sep 11, 2008 6:56:44pm

On March 27, 2004, Obama had this to say:

GG:
Do you still attend Trinity?

OBAMA:
Yep. Every week. 11 oclock service.

Ever been there? Good service.

I actually wrote a book called Dreams from My Father, it’s kind of a meditation on race. There’s a whole chapter on the church in that, and my first visits to Trinity.

The Reverend Wright America's chickens have come home to roost sermon (I use that term loosely) was given on September 16, 2001. So if we are to believe Obama, he was there that Sunday. And supported the church until 2008. That tells me he agreed with Wright. So it made me sick to my stomach today to see him desecrate Ground Zero with his presence.

I thought she did well. She actually answered his questions. He tried very hard to get her to say that the US is justified in crossing the Afghan/Pakistan border to go after Islamic terrorists without the cooperation or authorization of Pakistan. He wanted her to repeat his words. She said the US is justified in going after terrorists who are a danger to us. She didn't give him the satisfaction of parroting what he wanted her to say, but I was left with no doubt of her position.

The second part of the interview is just starting now. He's going after her religious views.

I remember coming back from Iraq in the middle of the night. The pilot of the commercial aircraft came on the speaker and said welcome back to the USA gentlemen and the plane went nuts. Then he came on the speaker and said "I am going to circle ground zero on your left. It is nighttime so I can do this without 20000 phone calls to 911 about a plane circling the city. Welcome home boys."

That is AWESOME!

Maybe from Matt Demon, I mean, Damon. This from a guy who speaks other people's words for a living. And when he has an original thought, it's something this stupid. Do you really believe he knows anything about actuaries? I suspect he's speaking other people's lines again. He actually afraid... Sarah as President is "a really scary thing."

TORONTO — Actor Matt Damon says the selection of Sarah Palin as the Republican nominee for vice president in the United States could end up "like a really bad Disney movie" if John McCain wins the November presidential election.

"You do the actuary tables, there's a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn't survive his first term, and it'll be President Palin," said Damon, who was in town to promote ONEXONE, a Canadian children's charity expanding to the U.S., during the Toronto Film Festival.

"It's like a really bad Disney movie, "The Hockey Mom.' Oh, I'm just a hockey mom from Alaska, and she's president," said Damon. "She's facing down Vladimir Putin and using the folksy stuff she learned at the hockey rink. It's absurd."

This has been so cruelly politicized by NYC and state. Of all issues, this is the very last issue to be politicized.

I saw the lights last night as we were driving back on one of the bridges, from Brooklyn, last night.

On Fox5 NY, the anchor just said that the lights will go dark at dusk tomorrow.

They were very hard to look at. We have not been in Manhattan since 9/11, and I try not to look at the skyline whenever we visit the kids and grandkids in Brooklyn and LI. It still hurts.

Obama has done NOTHING to aid in the fight against those responsible for those buildings, and our fellow citizens, being missing. He has no business showing his face at Ground Zero.

If Obama wants to pay his respects to the lives of the fallen at GZ,let him first respect those who are in the fight to prevent another one. Until then Mr. Obama, stay away from a place that means nothing to you except a political PR photo op.

Fact Check: Palin Wrong on Former VP Credentials

During her interview with ABC News' Charlie Gibson Thursday Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin attempted to deflect a question about the fact she has never met a foreign head of state by saying that "many" other vice presidential nominees in history hadn't met a head of state either.

However Palin was mistaken, at least where recent history is concerned.

Every vice president over the last 30 years had met a foreign head of state before being elected.

OK- how many heads of state had jimmy carter met? bill clinton? Before his world tour, how many had 0bama met? And can someone tell me where in the Constitution it says a VP has to have met with a foreign head of state to meet the qualifications for office?

Women Against Sarah Palin Speak Out

With recent polls suggesting that women are flocking to the McCain/Palin ticket, there is a growing chorus of female voices who want to put a stop to this trend, and fast.

Two women in New York felt so strongly that Palin was the wrong choice they created a blog called "Women Against Sarah Palin" and are using the site to post emails from women who write in from all over the country about why they think Palin is the wrong choice as for Vice President and the wrong choice for American women.

1) Is there a Women For Sarah Palin blog?

Storm brewing between state officials and TiZA school

TiZA is a K-8 charter school in Inver Grove Heights, financed by taxpayers. Its students have scored well on standardized tests. But like all public schools, it may not encourage or endorse religion, or favor one religion over another.

A number of facts raise questions about TiZA on this score. Its executive director, Asad Zaman, is an imam, or Muslim religious leader. The school shares a building with a mosque and the Minnesota chapter of the Muslim American Society, which the Chicago Tribune has described as the American branch of the Muslim Brotherhood -- "the world's most influential Islamic fundamentalist group."

Most of TiZA's students are Muslim, many from low-income immigrant families. The school breaks daily for prayer, its cafeteria serves halal food (permissible under Islamic law), and Arabic is a required subject.

School buses do not leave until after-school Muslim Studies classes, which many students attend, have ended for the day.

As a former Boy Scout Leader, one of my greatest satisfactions was to get the troop to help a fellow Scout with a fairly severe case of autism.
They did it. While the kid watched his father die of liver cancer.
The kid (now 26) has a job and can stand by himself.
The helped him all the way to "Life Scout". Eagle was a bit much, but he still tried.

Democrats must learn some respect

This article is not the first to note the cultural contradiction in American liberalism, but just now the point bears restating. The election may turn on it.

Democrats speak up for the less prosperous; they have well-intentioned policies to help them; they are disturbed by inequality, and want to do something about it. Their concern is real and admirable. The trouble is, they lack respect for the objects of their solicitude. Their sympathy comes mixed with disdain, and even contempt.

Democrats regard their policies as self-evidently in the interests of the US working and middle classes. Yet those wide segments of US society keep helping to elect Republican presidents. How is one to account for this? Are those people idiots? Frankly, yes – or so many liberals are driven to conclude. Either that or bigots, clinging to guns, God and white supremacy; or else pathetic dupes, ever at the disposal of Republican strategists. If they only had the brains to vote in their interests, Democrats think, the party would never be out of power. But again and again, the Republicans tell their lies, and those stupid damned voters buy it.

It is an attitude that a good part of the US media share. The country has conservative media (Fox News, talk radio) as well as liberal media (most of the rest). Curiously, whereas the conservative media know they are conservative, much of the liberal media believe themselves to be neutral.

Their constant support for Democratic views has nothing to do with bias, in their minds, but reflects the fact that Democrats just happen to be right about everything. The result is the same: for much of the media, the fact that Republicans keep winning can only be due to the backwardness of much of the country.

Because it was so unexpected, Sarah Palin’s nomination for the vice-presidency jolted these attitudes to the surface. Ms Palin is a small-town American. It is said that she has only recently acquired a passport. Her husband is a fisherman and production worker. She represents a great slice of the country that the Democrats say they care about – yet her selection induced an apoplectic fit.

For days, the derision poured down from Democratic party talking heads and much of the media too. The idea that “this woman” might be vice-president or even president was literally incomprehensible. The popular liberal comedian Bill Maher, whose act is an endless sneer at the Republican party, noted that John McCain’s case for the presidency was that only he was capable of standing between the US and its enemies, but that should he die he had chosen “this stewardess” to take over. This joke was not – or not only – a complaint about lack of experience. It was also an expression of class disgust. I give Mr Maher credit for daring to say what many Democrats would only insinuate. ...

Sarah Palin should be proud that dregs of the Earth hate her so much. Heck it would make a good commercial for McCain to show video clips of anti-Palin rants by scum like Pam Anderson.

re: #275 jwb7605

I disagree.
I am proud of (a) the troop members, and (b) my sense of accomplishment getting the troop members to come together.

Did I just admit to being a "community organizer"? By McCain's definition, I have to plead guilty.

This is wonderful, but I'm not sure what it has to do with my point. I'm not talking about private citizens helping others. I'm talking about Presidential candidates pandering to favorite special interests. I guess it's fine if Presidential spouses have favorite special interests they support, but Presidential spouses are, after all, unelected, private citizens.

A lot of people on the left have stated that racism is still a problem in this country. I disagree. It's clear from this election season that it is sexism that is by far a greater issue. The democrats have shown that they do not care- from their treatment of Hillary and now their treatment of Sarah Palin... it's just sad. Yes, it's taking way too long to rebuild. But those twin searchlights say, "In your face, jihadis."

Not really. What they say is we've had 7 years and we have nothing but promises to show for it in the rebuilding department. We're not even all that sure we want to rebuild.

The cost of construction in NYC is far higher than the national average, because the Union Scale is mandatory and it's off the scale. Throw in the corruption, and new construction of any kind is only barely possible. A huge project is just flat impossible.

We'd brush those obstructions aside if we really wanted to rebuild. We don't. There's this sinking feeling that NYC is like New Orleans...ultimately indefensible. They'll both get hit repeatedly, the one for ideological reasons now and weather reasons by and by, the other because today it already sits below sea level in the middle of hurricane alley. These cities will survive this hit and that, but in weakened condition, and ultimately, rational homeowners and businesses will put their new investment elsewhere. New Orleans is already below sea level, but as the Greenland ice cap goes, New York will be kind of in the same boat. Even today, much of Houston would go beneath the waves in the event of a worst-case Cat V hurricane hitting from the east at high tide. Florida beach front property is not ownership of land, it's a lease. The land won't be above the waves in perpetuity.

In war, you don't bunch up. In peacetime or war, why put too many eggs in one basket, especially a leaky basket?

Your quote (point?) was

One small thing I DIDN'T like about Sarah Palin's speech was that if the Republican ticket were elected, parents with special needs children would have an advocate in the White House. I know that might make me sound like a heel, but I just don't like pandering to special interests, no matter how deserving.

MY point was that for "private citizens", I could have used all the help I could get. I guess I forgot to mention that Bill Clinton was President during my tenure. In that period, it became popular for schools and businesses to "deny access" to Scouting based on their requirements to believe in "God" and their agreement with "don't ask don't tell" (which in plain fact went a bit beyond that).

Vice Presidents (as well as the President) frequently use what both candidates referred to as the "bully pulpit" to champion causes. I could have done with some of that 12 years ago. From what I've seen, Scouts could use some of that now.

I have no idea why you have a problem with someone ... either CIC or Vice President ... being an advocate in the White House.

The "discussion" tonight was all about community service.
Neither candidate fundamentally disagreed. McCain, however, was careful to mention that community service should not be mandatory.

Scouting (Girl or Boy) qualifies in the non-mandatory category.

Women Against Sarah Palin

/bring a razor

That blog is riddled with disjointed logic such as the following:

Because of Roe v. Wade feminists, unmarried women can now have children free from the shame of previous generations. Every generation of feminists has a burden or hurdle to overcome.

WTF?

re: #309 Sharmuta

And it's quite misogynistic. Shunning and gossip/smear campaigns is a classic female-on-female misogynistic tactic.

A lot of people on the left have stated that racism is still a problem in this country. I disagree. It's clear from this election season that it is sexism that is by far a greater issue. The democrats have shown that they do not care- from their treatment of Hillary and now their treatment of Sarah Palin... it's just sad. This can't get brushed aside as feminists being hypocrites because Sarah is a republican- they did this to Hill too. It's very troubling.

Huh? The Democrats have treated Hillary more generously than fairly. A fair treatment would have been to boo her off the stage and shout Never Come Back. Same for Bill. As to how they treated Palin, that's not fair, but then, they aren't exactly fair to Bush either. They treat her as badly as they treat any Republican who has popped up into Whack-a-mole priority one.

Nobody did anything wrong to Anita Hill. She was in the same position as the girl who cried Rape at Duke...she made insupportable allegations against an innocent, and in the end, she was not believed. False accusations rejected are not a case of bad treatment. They're an instance of justice getting it right.

And if sexism were a major problem, surely it would be present on the Republican side as well as among democrats? But Republicans are highly enthusiastic about Palin, and try always to see any blemish in context and find mitigating perspectives. Not that there's that many blemishes---she's the right choice.

Australia's fighter jets 'clubbed' by Russians

The federal opposition has dismissed new doubts about the capacity of the multi-billion dollar Joint Strike Fighter to perform against jets used by Russia and China.

The JSF jets, for which Australia is likely to pay $16 billion, were comprehensively beaten in highly classified simulated dogfights against Russian-built Sukhoi fighter aircraft, it has been reported.

Teacher OK after striking bear while riding bike

MISSOULA, Mont. - A middle school teacher suffered some bruising and a big scratch on his back after he struck a bear while riding his bicycle to school.

Jim Litz said he was traveling about 25 mph Monday morning when he came upon a rise and spotted a black bear about 10 feet in front of him. He didn't have time to stop and T-boned the bruin.

He tumbled over the handlebars, his helmet hit the bear's back and the two went cartwheeling down the road.

The bear rolled over Litz's head, cracking his helmet, and scratched his back before scampering up a hill above the road.

Litz's wife drove by shortly after the crash and took her husband to the hospital. He hoped to be able to return to teaching science at Target Range Middle School on Friday.

I'm not an engineer, but looking at two 100-story buildings with their top halves in flames, I knew that moment they weren't going to be able to put out the fires, that all they could do was to try to get people out.

What a punch in the stomach that morning watching them collapse, though.

Oh, and the troofers can bite me.
