The User Comments for Bellman and True warn of an important detail:

A fired computer programmer (Bernard Hill) has been hired by a gang of bank robbers to steal confidential computer information from his previous employer. The problem is, the information is encoded. He takes his son along with his payment and runs away but gets stuck when the money runs out. He returns home only to be confronted by his "new" employers. He is forced to decode the information he stole so that the robbers can use it. His son is kept hostage until he has what they want. It gets more involved when the plans change and he has to go along on the robbery to disable the alarm system. This movie is a great heist movie. The video release has been edited so much it doesn't explain important parts in the plot. There is a unedited version out there that shows more details but is usually only shown in full on TV.

That's too bad! The plotting is very important.

This user comment at IMDB really does it justice:

Brilliant British Bank Heist Movie!

I'm a huge fan of "heist" movies, a sub-species of "caper" movies. And there's something especially delicious about the British argot that makes British heist movies especially great fun. ("Sexy Beast," "The Great Train Robbery," "The General" all add to this list)

But across all heist movies "Bellman and True" is my all-time favorite. Bernard Hill gives one of his most nuanced performances as an alcoholic computer programmer who is left with his girlfriend's son ("True") when she dumps both of them. To get out of debt he's sold some information to a gang about bank security, but now he and the boy are on the run because the gang wants more than information--they want him to help plan the heist.

I won't give away anything more, but the heist itself is a white knuckle masterpiece, directed by Richard Longcraine (Richard III, with Ian McKellen, and Smiley's People, with Alec Guiness).

Through it all Russell is surrounded by more than a dozen great performances by some of the UK's finest character actors. Richard Hope as "Salto," is especially strong, as the gang member assigned to be Russell and the boy's jailer.

Trust me---the caper, which makes up the second half of the film, is worth a viewing on its own, but the strong characters and acting make it a real hidden gem of 1980s British cinema.

It's a pun, because in Cockney slang, a "bellman" is an expert on disabling alarm systems.

I posted this earlier about two threads back, but since it was #590-something, I hope nobody minds the re-post.

Bill Ayers not only babysat the Obama children, but he raised Chesa Boudin to be the fine Red-diaper Rhodes scholar that he is today. Chesa's parents went to jail while he was still an infant for their role in the robbery of a Brinks armoured truck as well as the murder of two Nyack, N.Y. police officers and one of the Brinks gaurds, Peter Paige. Interestingly enough, there were no NYT puff pieces on the hardships faced by the children of Officers Waverly Brown or Edward O'Grady growing up without their father.

In a very sad bit of irony, Brinks guard Joe Trombino was shot and seriously wounded by Bill Ayers' friends in that 1981 robbery. However, he would continue working at Brinks until he was killed at the World Trade Center in the 9/11 attacks.

I put it on my Netflix queue. The last recommendation you made, we enjoyed a lot. Maybe it was "Snatch".

In the theaters, "Tropic Thunder" is a stitch. I laughed so hard my legs would not work for 5 minutes after the credits finished.

I haven't been to an actual movie theatre in, gee, I can't count how many years. I only ever see movies in either studio preview screenings (mostly those are in LA and NY, but there are some in SF too if you know where to look -- see it for free, two months before anyone else!), or checking it out from the library, or (more rarely) renting the video.

The thought of paying $10 to see a movie gives me hives.

The scene in snatch where Cousin Avi tells his guys they are going to England is one of the funniest on film.

Dennis Farina is a demigod.

Or the one about the Caravan. "How much longer for those sausages, Charlie?"
"Five minutes, Turkish."

This is classic: No one's heard nothing? That just ain't natural. It's like one of them silent, deadly farts. No clue, and then pow, you go cross-eyed. Hah!

My favorite, when actually watching the film, was "The Mafia? I've shit 'em." The context is, he's trying to figure out which organization is wreaking havoc in his territory. Some powerful group that has him scared for the first time in his life. Some underling suggests that it's possibly the mafia, and Hoskins is so dismissive of the idea, and the mafia are so beneath his notice, that he uncorks the line.

Shopping is definitely "out", and it a constant test of one's marriage. We had to have an understanding some years ago, that when I put something in the cart, it means I want it. Want.

[Link: www.realclearpolitics.com...]

The electoral map has me worried. The map is currently identical to the 2004 Bush/Kerry final map, except Colorado, New Mexico, and Iowa have flipped to Obama (based on recent polls). It's also identical to the 2000 Bush/Gore map, except Colorado and New Hampshire are flipped.

I'm certain Iowa is going to vote Obama. They dislike McCain there because of his opposition to corn subsidies.

Bush only won New Mexico by 6000 votes in 2004, and Colorado by 100000. Both states have moved further left since then.

If New Mexico and Iowa flip blue, then McCain only has 277-261 lead. That means the only other red state he could afford to lose is Nevada. Anything else - Colorado, Virginia, Ohio - and it's over.

On the more hopeful side, McCain has a chance to flip Michigan and New Hampshire to red. Barring major game changers, I don't see anything else changing.

I guess I'm worried the debates will be a push, we won't see any more movement in the polls, and Obama will win on turnout. Bad economic news won't help.

In Iowa I don't think the majority of the people think about corn subsidies.

The erosion of small town life.
The erosion of top soil
The pollution of the water table.
Vanishing jobs.
Pressure insurance companies to help farmers ride out bad years without losing their shirts.
Loan stabilization.

The small family farm should receive some tax relief for being a national asset.

Just get Jack in the box to make a good pork sandwich and corn subsidies won't be so problem matic.

Actually Iowa needs better farming methods. Herbicides and pesticides are over used. Farmers are pressed by the terms of their loans to over exert the land and not give it time to rest. Corn subsidies would be part of that problem.

160 Purre  Fri, Sep 12, 2008 1:39:44am

Honestly, I feel ill about my country. No, I am not American. I am Finn. I feel ill about my country (which in itself is good place to live) because of both lack of testicular fortitude and adoration of the same in others. I refer specifically to standing by allies for better or worse.

On our side our politicians have absolutely no courage whatsoever in defense issues or foreign policy. Russia is forbidden topic and NATO is something that can't be talked about. Instead of applying NATO membership, because frankly said we need it, most of them keep saying it is is not timely issue and keep babbling about some "NATO-option" as if it existed. That is utter bollocks, because it is best to join there when things are calm. Vast majority of NATO countries would not admit a member that brought crisis with it and would rather let a country go down. So there is no NATO-option.

Or there just might be with Sarah Palin, though she would be unable to hammer it through. But here is the thing. What is the first reaction when even slimmest glimpse of that is shown? Horrified talks about how she's willing to go to war with Russia. Oh, my. These people just can't get it to their head that for a long time this is the only moment anyone has shown willingness to stand up and show any spine regarding the safety of countries that have border with Russia and are unaligned (yet). So not only do these jackasses refuse to get security guarantees, they also mock any possible save in case the unthinkable happens.

So I have newsflash to these people. Should Russia want to play its powergames against us, there will be no help - not with your attitude. Grow a spine and appreciate it when possible future leader of democratic nation shows spine to stand by other democratic nations. It is rare commodity.

I find the McCain's personal approach to his own campaign is more of an Altruistic approach. He talks of service, volunteering, communities, dedication, sacrifice.

Palin on the other hand comes off more like a Strong conservative, and a Capitalist. High in interity, and high in guttural instinct and honesty. Not in preaching altruism but in being and example of free individualism. They are quite contrasting. McCain has much more in common with the Democratic Male candidates. This is why Sarah is standing out alone in this election.

Nothing at Fight the Smears about his brother. He did say the "I am my brothers keeper" line at the convention, but other than that has Obama even mentioned a brother at all? Did he even know about him? My favorite smear is also true, Obama is a Muslim.

SMEAR: Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim

Fact: There is no secret about the fact that Obama's black because his father was black. There is also no secret that his father was a Muslim. The lie is that Obama has a choice in the matter, Sharia being what it is.

They do dance around the truth though.

Barack is a committed Christian who was sworn into the Senate on his family bible, but unscrupulous right-wing operatives are repeating the lie that he was raised a Muslim. These assertions are completely false and designed to play into the worst kind of stereotypes.

Raised Muslim or not, under Sharia if Daddy was Muslim, sons and daughters are Muslim. If only the Mother is Muslim, then I don't know.

Good morning.

Serious question: how do you older lizards keep from having heart attacks after watching the television on a night like last night?

1) Charlie Gibson condescendingly berates Sarah Palin and you sit there knowing the whole time it is going to be spun against her.

Does Israel have the right to attack Iran?
Would you support Israel attack it's neighboor just because it feels threatened?
So you would support Israel's decision to attack a neighboor if they felt threatened? WTF?

2) Wake up this morning to the National Enquirer hit piece. It was less a story and more a listing of bad acts the Palin family had done.

3) Judy Woodruff and Fritz's blantantly intolerable bias in their interviews. Not only did Obama get to hear the questions, but Woodruff constantly repeated what McCain set, setting up a rebuttal. The worst was when she said: Senator McCain said the government cannot do it all when it comes to volunteering, but what about kids who have just graduated who don't have the funds to get started?

Wow! She not only set him up to rebut McCain she did it for him!

Seriously what do you do?

Obama also knows how to say and has said that little prayer:

Saying that prayer is considered by most Muslims to be sufficient evidence that one is a Muslim and in a Islamic court would become a matter of life or death.

Where to begin? If you were raised a Catholic & then reject it, then you are no longer a Catholic, no matter what the Church says.
The issue is that you WERE a Catholic. Barry WAS a Muslim.
He did not attend a Madras, it was a public school. He registered as a Muslim & took advanced Koranic studies according to the current Head Master. It was his stepfather LoLo who registered him.

Roy L. Pearson Jr., who sued a dry cleaners for $54 million over a missing pair of pants, is getting a chance to revive the case.

More than a year after his lawsuit was rejected by a judge in D.C. Superior Court, Pearson has persuaded an appellate panel to review the case. The D.C. Court of Appeals will hear arguments Oct. 22, officials said.

Citing the strains brought on by the lawsuit and other factors, the Chungs sold the Bladensburg Road store last year.

Where to begin? If you were raised a Catholic & then reject it, then you are no longer a Catholic, no matter what the Church says.

If the Church says your Catholic then believers think you are Catholic. If the Church says you are to be killed for rejecting it then believers will kill you. Whether in the grand scheme of things you are or are not Catholic the perception of the believers is what matters on the ground. What can't be argued here is that those who follow Sharia consider Obama Muslim.

He did not attend a Madras, it was a public school.

Didn't know that, thanks.

It was his stepfather LoLo who registered him.

Didn't know that either. Was she even legally married since Daddy already had a wife? How was she divorced, by Daddy saying "I divorce you!" three or four times? I'm sure I remember Uncle, did she marry Daddy's brother?

MY source Obama is not credible? WTF are you talking about?

Sorry, not credible to me. He's a lying SOS.

In a court of law that is direct testimony. Are you suggesting that he lied about Islamic instruction?

I am suggesting that if his lips are moving...I would bet he may have underplayed or overplayed the whole experience depending on his motives at the time. Which way I don't know but that seems to be his MO.

GIBSON: Governor, let me start by asking you a question that I asked John McCain about you, and it is really the central question. Can you look the country in the eye and say "I have the experience and I have the ability to be not just vice president, but perhaps president of the United States of America?"

PALIN: I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, will be ready. I'm ready.

GIBSON: And you didn't say to yourself, "Am I experienced enough? Am I ready? Do I know enough about international affairs? Do I -- will I feel comfortable enough on the national stage to do this?"

PALIN: I didn't hesitate, no.

GIBSON: Didn't that take some hubris?

PALIN: I -- I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink.

So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate.

Good Morning Everyone.

Just a one hit comment today as I will be out of office most of the day.

I want to thank everyone for the postings yesterday about 9/11. I have to admit that I had been just going about my day yesterday as if it was just another day. Not that I didn't remember or know what day it was, just not really thinking about it. When I started reading all of those accounts of where people were on 9/11 it just stopped me dead in my tracks. I noticed a lot of infrequent posters on that thread. I think it must have hit most people the same way it did me.

Thanks again. And Never Forget.

I also agree he couldn't predict how it would play if he ever became president but I bet it was written with that possibility in mind. That would at least mean after the Iran Hostage Crises so if anything he downplayed it. But actually the "not credible" line was a joke that I felt the need to defend, we are pretty much in agreement here.

Well, the annual weep-fest has begun. Can you feel it? Can you feel the sadness in the air? The sniffling remembrance shows on television, each shot carefully crafted to generate the proper tearful response, the proper feeling of sadness and respect for ‘first responders’(we used to call them firemen, cops, paramedics). We are shepherded into a nice crying jag, cathartic and safe.

We need a different version of this day.

We need a day in which we show the planes slamming into the buildings. Over and over. Intersperse it with the Muslims who danced with joy–some even in NYC. Intersperse it with the rhetoric from the left, the rhetoric from Muslims in this country, that blame us. Read off the names, and after each one say ‘This person was murdered by radical Islam, this person was murdered by terrorists. Never Again.’. And then start in on naming more terrorist attacks–from ALL terrorist sources.

Forget the weepy speeches. We need rousing speeches. We need speeches that tell our people that those who died in on 9/11 did not do so in vain, that we will hunt down their killers, that we will pursue every terrorist in the world and slaughter them. We will show the world that engaging in terrorist activity hurts the cause terrorists support more than anything else. We need to speak to our enemies. We need to tell them that they will abandon the ideology that commited this evil–or they will die. We need to speak to the nations that support the terrorists. We need to tell them that this stops NOW. Or we will destroy you. You, your people, and everything you care about will be scoured from the face of the Earth unless this stops now. Every terrorist. Every terrorist supporter. No matter what their ’cause’.

We need to stop thinking about weepy ‘memorials’ and start thinking about resounding victory–the only memorial that will let the victims of this act–and all terrorist acts–truly rest in peace.

I couldn't agree more!

Times Online-Yawning Gulf Between Obama's Words and Actions

Politician Obama rose through a Chicago machine that is notoriously the most corrupt in the country.

Politician Obama's support for abortion rights is the most extreme of any Democratic senator. In the Illinois legislature he refused to join Democrats and Republicans in supporting a Bill that would require doctors to provide medical care for babies who survived abortions. No one in the Senate - not the arch feminist Hillary Clinton nor the superliberal Edward Kennedy - opposed this same humane measure.

What the hell? There are tons of other good snippets in there as well. This is the third or fourth anti Obama article I've seen this week from the Brits. When is our media going to wake up? How scary is it when the Brits are starting to get it and we are still at the "rock star" stage!

Light Them Up Iddo

With all the news about the election one must marvel at the quiet from what had previously been a quiet front: the Iranian nuclear issue. Nothing on diplomatic discussions, nothing about sanctions, nothing about nothing.

The Russians have announced they will finish the Busheir reactor and other than the largest US naval deployments in 17 years, (just about every big ship that can sail is at sea). With Iraq stabilizing, the US military has more freed up forces in any time since 2003.

Nations go to war when their interests are threatened and all diplomatic options have been exhausted. You could call any and every phone in Iran and there is simply no one interested in diplomacy. Iran has decided that not only is terror an acceptable instrument of international diplomacy but they would like to back up the deeds of Hezbollah with nuclear might.

Imagine the terrorism they would commit in the west if they have nukes, that leaves aside their willingness to be the first suicide bomber nation and attack the US, Europe and Israel. You can say whatever you want about the Soviets as a superpower but they were comparatively angels in their international behavior compared to the Iranians.

The fact the Russian invasion of Georgia makes war with Iran more of a necessity than ever. Russia and Iran are closely working together and seek to create a new oil power alliance to blackmail and threaten the world. Extending the Iranian nuclear umbrella over the Middle East is a critical first step towards blackmailing and extorting the entire world with oil. If Iran gets the bomb, the Saudis, Emirates, Omanis, Iraqis and Kuwaitis will never get the chance to get nukes of their own- the New Persian Empire will tell them what they can and cannot do. For the West, even the China, this is a dangerous threat to our collective futures.

But none are as threatened as the Jewish people. When Hezbollah opens offices in Caracas, it is not to help plan a more joyous Simhas Torah. Imagine Gestapo headquarters in Mexico City in 1938 and you have an idea of what is going on there. Whether by pinpoint terror attacks on Jews targets throughout the Americas or one big nuclear flash, the fate of the Jewish people has no less been decided in Tehran than it was in Wansee (read that last phrase again, I am in utter seriousness as to the extent of the threat against our people).

Suddenly war looks pretty good. And that brings me to the subject of various European companies but particularly the whores in the German speaking world, who did not learn the lesson of the last 60 years.

"Hearing his hosts speak of their future investments, Sneh replied quietly
"it's a shame, because Ido will light all this up." He was referring to Maj.
Gen. Ido Nehushtan, the recently appointed commander of the Israeli Air
Force. Investing in Iran in 2008, "[Ephriam] Sneh [former Israeli DM] told his Austrian hosts, "is like investing in Krups Steelworks in 1938, it's a high risk investment." The Austrians, according to Sneh, turned pale.

I say light them up Iddo. No matter how bad the war is, no matter how many homes are hit by Iranian convention missiles, the homes can be rebuilt, the people will live and Hezbollah with the Iranian puppet masters will be exterminated from the face of the earth. The price of not acting is intolerable. The price of acting will be what it will be. The question is not that lives will be lost, because the only question is how many are going to die. So it is that going on offense and taking the the fight to the enemy sooner rather than later is the best and only decision.

The silence about Iran's nukes is the silence of the Augusts. The ones of 1914 and 1939. All the talk is done. It is too late for sanctions to work and waiting for the Iranian people to rise is not possible while they fear their leaders. Destroy the myth of their invulnerability and their power and they will be swept aside but someone has to have the courage to strike first.

Light them up Iddo!

Not if he can continue to avoid doing so he won't! Don't forget that he is the single most Left Liberal in the Senate and his running mate Joe Biden was ranked the third most Liberal in the Senate by, I believe, the Heritage Foundation.
They KNOW American's don't want to hear what they really want to do if elected.

Good morning...rainy and dreary here, too, and looks to remain so over the weekend. And being Friday, as Martha Stewart says, is a very good thing! How goes all with you?

Scottishumbrella this weekend?
The very first Motorcycle Grand Prix will be at the Indy 500 track this weekend.. 4 races in one day.. You'll never guess in a million years where i'm going to be Sunday.

Good morning - I'm doing ok, sorta. This week was unusually "busy" and active for me and just when my body had started to refresh itself with naps (naps are SO underrated!) Mom tld me this morning of a few more "chores" we have to do.
Oh. Joy.
BTW, I'd be doing a LOT better if you didn't call me "sir"; makes me feel as old as I in fact feel physically! LOL!
How are you doing today?

I stole this one, but I like it so I'm going to use it:

Pamela Anderson, political pundit - float toy - tarted-up cock holster. You decide.
