Yahoo Goes Social

Science | Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 10:49:02 am PDT

I’ve added a button to submit LGF articles to Yahoo’s new link sharing system: Yahoo! Buzz. The moonbats don’t seem to have completely taken over Buzz yet (like they have Digg and Reddit).

Where's the button?

2 laZardo  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 10:50:48am

I suspect the moonbat monitors on this site will quickly catch on though...

3 Sharmuta  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 10:50:55am

I think that's a great idea Charles! I've seen huffpo posts make the front page of yahoo through Buzz, so here's hoping LGF is next. Look out hamsters!

4 gop_patriot  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 10:50:57am

Ha! I just noticed it, buzzed up the last post, and was going to ask how long it had been there. :)

5 Sharmuta  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 10:51:23am

I'm going to go Buzz the last article downstairs.

6 wrenchwench  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 10:51:27am

When I saw that button, I was hoping its purpose was to pull up all of Buzzsawmonkey's posts. Oh well.

It's just to the left of the 'digg' link at the bottom of the post/article. :)

it's the "buzzup" button at the top of the page, right under Charles' thread - next to Digg.

11 kynna  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 10:57:25am

You have to log in to Yahoo for your vote to count, I think.

I buzzed.

12 Cognito  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 10:58:30am

I'm way behind on tech trends, but I do wonder: Are the 'social' things getting so diffuse and random that they're losing their value? Not to LGF, I mean -- I think I understand why it's good for traffic -- but for the reader?

What I mean is this: If we keep it up, in a few years will there be a thousand 'social' widgets? And will there, then, eventually be one for every member of the population?

(Being silly, but it's toward the point.)

CHARLES -

I emailed you about this, for your evaluation of postworthiness, copied here for others:

Discussed and linked by Michelle and The Campaign Spot blog at NRO: Current Obama TV ad titled "Still" continues to run. This add criticizes McCain for his alleged lack of computer skills. Their claim is that he doesn't know how to run a computer or send an email. They end with describing him as ill equipped for the 21st century because he is stuck in 1982, before the computer revolution.

It never occurred to the geniuses at Obama's campaign that maybe McCain's torture injuries prevent him from doing these things. Turns out a Forbes Magazine story from 2000 characterizes McCain as a skilled technologist.

Jonah Goldberg at NRO and others also point out that McCain's crippling injuries prevent him from:

combing his hair
tying his shoes
typing on a keyboard

McCain described his email routine thus: he and Cindy sit together with a laptop. They read his email, he dictates responses, shy types and sends.

Nice work Obama - criticize an injured war vet for not being able to do certain tasks. I suppose FDR's inability to walk or drive an automobile should have disqualified him for the presidency.

Good Grief.

Judging from the comments, the general area looks pretty lefty to me.

When I was "young" (and indestructible ...) I never imagined that some of the things (accidents resulting from stupidity) that happened at that age wouldn't show up physically until much later.

I'm 12 years younger than McCain, and now I just don't want to imagine.

I still can't figure out why Colorado is a "battleground state".
I got this in my e-mail this morning:

CENTENNIAL, CO -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced changes to Governor Sarah Palin's visit on Monday.

Due to overwhelming demand the campaign ran out of tickets in the span of eight hours. In addition, the event has changed venues at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, moving to the Westernaires Arena, and has been changed to a morning rally instead of a pancake breakfast in order to accommodate the demand.

"Coloradans are excited about the McCain-Palin ticket," said McCain Spokesperson Tom Kise. "Our phones have been ringing off the hook and the line has been out the door and into the street. Unfortunately the campaign has no more tickets to give away."

The message was from "colorado@johnmccain.com".

True - it's not as if just anybody can go into a lab and start mixing stuff together to come up with life-saving meds.

I'll be glad when the patents on dementia meds expires (2010, IIRC). My mom takes two of them (aricept and namenda), and together they cost over $300 per month. Mom does ok financially, but for those seniors who make less than mom does, it's a stretch to shell out the co-pay of $60 per month for them.

While their effect isn't dramatic, they do help keep her more grounded in reality during the day.

I understand the economics, and I didn't mean to sound anti-cancer research (both my parents succumbed). My good grief was aimed more at the concept of taking a daily Viagra/Cialis/whatever. Reminded me of an episode of "HOUSE" where a little old lady said her paramour was hooked on the little blue pills and he's exhausting her. It was quite amusing.

I think I am exactly your age & some old injuries do act up a bit. A little more warm-up time necessary. McCain's injuries- much worse, though.

Lets see ,,,,

McCain ,,,,
teeth knocked out by rifle butt
arms tied back until shoulders pop
legs, hip, arms broken
held in solitary 23 hours a day for 5 years

ME
papercut at work
twisted my ankle stepping off the curb
seasonal allergies

naaahhh ,,,, I got it as bad as he does !

re: #77 NC State of Mind

I'd love to see Michigan go red. But I don't know if the rural area's votes could offset the big city's votes, unless there is a backlash against Kwame Kilpatrick's pecadillos.

Pennsylvania is in play, for sure. Hopefully there are a million or so PUMAs whose rejection of Obama can put McCain/Palin over the top there.

One thing is for sure: McCain's Palin maneuver has forced the Obama camp to re-evaluate their strategy. Obama thought it would be a cake-walk, that he wouldn't have to work so hard in some traditionally blue states. But now he's going to have to work hard in PA, MI and even WA, maybe even OR.

I have had a busted knee, foot, elbow, cut tendon - all of them healed fine, but are beginning to be a little stiff in the morning sometimes. I can imagine McCain's. He's lucky to be alive. Now he's going to be President.

re: #69 Intrepid

And that's a good thing. They should make enough money from Viagra, Cialis and Levitra (plus how many others?) that a cure for breast cancer will come soon, before more millions of women die.

Just wanted to mention that drug companies do have dozens of drugs on the market for breast cancer treatment. None are magic bullets. However, the one I took for five years, just as an example, has been shown to reduce recurrence by 50 percent.

The drug (tamoxifen) was so new that I heard a radio piece on it on NPR, which included an interview with a scientist at Duke, the same day that my doctor mentioned that they wanted me to take it. My biopsy material was analyzed at Duke.

Also, this is one subject on which Senators McCain and Obama agree.
They both have their own personal brushes with the subject: McCain has had skin cancer, and Obama's mother died of ovarian cancer.

You should have hat post deleted as it gives your home address. Do not give out your personal information here.

That's not my home address.  700 H St. is the address of the building that houses all the administrative offices for the Sacramento County Government.  It's some place where anyone in Sacramento could find and navigate from.  I chose it on purpose, and I alluded to that when I said:

From the Sacramento County Government building downtown it doesn't look like much of a trip at all ...

This isn't my first time on the turnip truck.  Trust me, I live scores of miles away.  They'd have to nuke the entire state capitol to get me.

Yet.

There are seriously deranged Unabomber-types out there. If you really honk one of them off, Sac County's gonna need a new building.

And thanks for the idea 'bout using a local landmark as a starting point -- that's a really good idea and I'm gonna steal it :).

Do the math - US Losses are .440/day. That includes accidents. Methinks CANADA is suffering far greater casualties/population than we are in the Afghanistan Theatre.

The moonbats don’t seem to have completely taken over Buzz yet (like they have Digg and Reddit).

Unfortunately, it is probably inevitable.
*Moonbats seem prefer social sites rather than news. Just like they prefer to listen to music rather than talk radio.
*A small handful that post a lot is all it takes.
*On the social sites (supposedly non-political) that I frequent, the moonbats love to forward "news" without checking the source. Like the "Bristol Palin is the real mother of Trig" or the "List of books Sarah Palin banned" rumors.
Moonbats also respond with vitriol to the bogus stories without checking for a source first.
*Statistically, more younger people are liberal and it seems like younger people flock to the social sites.

114 MadJadBad  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 1:14:27pm

Well, I just checked out the Yahoo! Buzz site and I predict that it will not become popular because it lacks a comment system.

115 MadJadBad  Sat, Sep 13, 2008 1:19:38pm

re: #110 hermeneutics
http://buzz.yahoo.com/about/

From that page:
How it works.
* First, we determine the most popular topics that people are searching for on Yahoo!.
* Then, we showcase the most popular stories within those topics, based on activities like voting and emailing stories to friends.
* Stories with most Buzz may be published on the Yahoo! home page - you can impact what millions will see on Yahoo!.

The last bullet point is just precious. The average Yahoo home page probably get 1 hit a day and that's from the person it belongs to.
