I'm going to be unbelievably busy with a major work deadline for the next three weeks, so if anyone notices my absence (or diminished presence, more likely) here, that's the reason. Got to put LGF on the back burner for a while. A zombie's got to make a living, after all.

In anticipation of "Talk Like a Pirate Day," "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate":

And it's hee-ho! hi-ho! Comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley, and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey! hi-hey! Farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores!

One of the really colorful pirates was Gasperella. He was a Spanish Buccaneer who worked the Gulf of Mexico. The British Navy came hard after him.
He swore not to be taken alive. True to his word when he was cornered he wrapped a chain around his neck & jumped into the Gulf.

When I was just a lad looking for my true vocation
My father said now son, this choice deserves deliberation
Though you could be a doctor or perhaps a financier
My boy why not consider a more challenging career

Hey ho ho
You'll cruise to foreign shores
And you'll keep your mind and body sound
By working out of doors

True friendship and adventure are what we can't live without
And when you're a professional pirate
That's what the job's about

(Upstage, lads! This is my ONLY number)
Now take Sir Francis Drake, the Spanish all despise him
But to the British he's a hero and they idolize him
It's how you look at buccaneers that makes them bad or good
And I see us as members of a noble brotherhood

Hey ho ho
We're honorable men
And before we lose our tempers we will always count to ten

On occasion there may be someone you have to execute
But when you're a professional pirate
You don't have to wear a suit

I could have been a surgeon
I like taking things apart
I could have been a lawyer
But I just had too much heart

I could have been in politics
Cause I've always been a big spender
And me...I could have been a contender

Some say that pirates steal and should be feared and hated
I say we're victims of bad press it's all exaggerated
We'd never stab you in the back, we'd never lie or cheat
We're just about the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet
(Tell the truth, lad. Do you really think that Captain
and the Squire are planning to share the treasure with the
likes of us? And we being the rightful owners, who shed our
blood getting it here. Join us, lad! Donate your compass to
the treasure hunt, and get a full share!)

Hey ho ho
It's one for all for one
And we'll share and share alike with you and love you like a song
We're gentlemen of fortune and that's what we're proud to be
And when you're a professional pirate
You'll be honest, brave and free
The soul of decency
You'll be loyal and fair and on the square
And most importantly

When you're a professional pirate
You're always in the best of company

Libs like to remind us that more people in the world hate us than ever before. I suspect that's true, but I doubt it's because of George Bush or our foreign policy. I think its because the libs themselves and our own media keep up a constant drumbeat of anti-America propaganda. I think anybody exposed to American media (and that's everybody) would think America is a bad country. You truly have to be an independent thinker to actually like America.

Sarah Palin Has Cooties

Apparently, McSame didn't thoroughly vett his darling little bimbot before choosing her for his running mate. Then again, the senile old man doesn't know how many houses he owns...how can he be expected to know whether or not his own Veep has cooties? He'll probably deny she even has cooties or try to bury the truth. But the folks over at Daily Kos and the Democratic Underground have it on good authority that Sarah Palin does indeed have Cooties, and that her daughter is a slut (and not even the good kind of slut - she's keeping her baby). But more importantly, Sarah Palin has Cooties.

(....)

How exactly can a Cootie-sufferer find the time to perform her duties as Vice President while raising five kids, one of whom is a slut?

(....)

No one is really sure how Cooties are transmitted, but the general consensus is that you get them by being a pro-life, pro-drilling, Christian Conservative member of the NRA...and by kissing *YUCK!* boys.

No, it's not the NYT.

I took note of the comment about oil being used to threaten economies.

Remember when opec and, I think, that fat saudi bastard saying that high oil prices wasnt their fault, that there was plenty of production and it was the action of greedy futures traders that drove up the price?

Well, it is no surprise to hear the fat bastard urge a cut back in production as the barrel price drops below $100, because they need to keep the price up.

The Democrats, who are now the will hounds of the collectivist Left like to call their opponents personal pet names if you stand against them, If you use plain simple English with plain talking then you are a Red Neck, If you want to earn a living by going against union wishes at restraining your ability to earn when you want to work then you are called Selfish and a Scab, If you are patriotic and want to make sure your country and your family continues to enjoy freedom against those who wish to murder them then you are just a Baby Killer, If you adopt the principles of our founding fathers and talk of God in any way they you are just Clingers of Religion, If you want to independence and survival skills to your children as well as how to protect them selves then you are just a Gun fanatic. If you wish deal with individuals on their own merits instead of addressing them as members of their divisive collectivist group then you are a Racist and a Bigot. Apple sort of goofed with the new iTunes 8 upgrade. Apparently, they've pulled back a driver. This isn't the only problem, though. iTunes 8 doesn't work for people who have their iTunes Libraries on external hard drives.

Going back to iTunes 7.7 isn't difficult, but it's time consuming. Also, iTunes 7.7 won't accept a library that's been touched by iTunes 8, so it's necessary to reload the library which takes quite a bit of time for a large library (not to mention if you let iTunes search the internet for the artwork.)

Importing all the playlists was a snap by importing the library info that I saved repeatedly in an XML file, but another catch to all this is that Apple has also delivered an upgrade for iTouch (and iPhones) that can be offered via iTunes 7.7 but only works on iTunes 8.

So I have a Classic iPod (160gb) that still works on my reverted iTunes 7.7, but my iTouch has been upgraded to work only on iTunes 8. So it is frozen in time in its current state until Apple comes up with an iTunes 8 that works with external hard drives.

The irony, of course, is that I have my iTunes Library on an external hard drive because my iPod Classic (160gb) holds too many movies, songs, photos, etc., to fit on my laptop's internal hard drive. So I have a small portable hard drive that I carry with me so that I can update my iPods whenever I want to do so.

I'm sure Apple will get this fixed (they do know about it) and it doesn't lessen my enjoyment of my iPods. Most of the content on my iPod Classic is instructional and Hebrew studies. My iTouch is mostly movies for when I'm traveling or waiting somewhere.

Dennis Prager was talking about this on Thursday. He played different clips and said that Obama uses different accents and cadences depending on the audience he is addressing.

Obama is very skilled at manipulating his listeners. Hillary also tried playing with different accents and was completely ripped for it.

He pronounces "policy" as "policy" when he is talking to media types or giving a formal speech. When he is talking to the unwashed masses, he says "polisah" as part of his horribly fake Southern-folksy accent.

I have a neighbor, a yellow-dog Democrat and lukewarm Obama supporter, who looked up that Lebanon, VA talk to find out exactly what Obama said about lipstick. He says he's not voting for "that POS" now. It wasn't what Obama said. It was the obviously put-on accent.

Idaho potato's take offense at your comment Sir. Potato's from Main may be liberal (and small) but Idaho potato's are far from small or liberal.

Sarcasm aside, this actually isn't that bad of an idea. Potato blight is a big problem and if science can find the genetic code to develop a potato that is resistant to it, great. While Obama might have the gift of gab when reading off of a teleprompter, I've noticed that the left appears to give him a pass for his lack of eloquence when attempting to talk about things he obviously has no idea of the subject.

The cracks about the stammering & stuttering = lies really causes lots of problems for people with a real speech impediment. A person who stutters is often thought stupid by others and as such doesn't handle the comments about good speech equaling high intelligence very well.

There is a Russian community on the Kenai Peninsula (Ninilchik). During winter some dog team it out from the US side and meet cousins, friends etc. who dog team it over the frozen sea from the Russian side with Russian ladies who are having complex pregnancies. (with GPS - meeting up is a piece of cake)

They meet in the middle and xfer the ladies.

The ladies are then taken to one of the hospitals in Anchorage - introduced as one of the community members - thus no English spoken ... deliver the kids at the taxpayers expense. By Kat-Mo at [Link: ace.mu.nu...]

In 2004, besides Bush's "security moms" and the "evangelicals", one of the touted reasons for Bush's win in the election was what I like to call "the beer factor".

The "beer factor" is that certain something that tells the electorate that, yeah, actually, they could feel comfortable to a sit down, drink a beer and shoot the breeze with the candidate. They could talk to him (or her) and he (or she) would be interested in what they had to say. More importantly, since the candidate was "like them", they believed he or she would govern like the electorate would want.

Bush had the "good ol' boy" thing going on. If you invited him to beer and barbecue, you'd expect him to spend his time telling stupid stories about this one time he and some other fellas went huntin' and ol' what's his name tripped over a pile of cow crap and nearly blew Dick Cheney's big toe off. They ended up scaring all the game away, driving into town, ordering a steak and drinking beer. Then he'd take another swig of beer and laugh like that story was still funny fifty times later.

Of course, he had that endearing way of saying "new-kew-lar" that everyone had a good laugh at including Bush.

McCain has been lagging a bit in that area and Obama is starting to feel what it's like to be last year's news at the family barbecue. Palin has re-injected the "beer factor" by a factor of 10 into the election.

So, if we had a barbecue today, what would our candidates look like?

"Uncle John" McCain: He's that slightly cranky uncle that gets invited to all the family barbecues. "Uncle John" drinks Budweiser. Out of can. He likes to tell his war stories. Over and over and over. Everybody loves him, but nobody wants to get stuck sitting next to him at the table. Some of the family gets uncomfortable when he gets cranky, but you nearly shoot your beer out of your nose when you hear him tell "Uncle Harry" "go f*ck yourself!"

Yeah, sometimes, "Uncle John" is a pretty cool guy. Besides, he did marry "Aunt Cindy" with all those bucks who ain't too shabby for an older lady.

Psuedo-Professor, Professional Community Organizer Obama, MA, BS: Yeah, he's just that ostentatious when your star struck sister introduces him. You have no idea if he has any other name because she's always going on about "Obama this" and "Obama that" for the last year. You hardly know the guy and he already pisses you off just hearing his name.

Your sister brought him home to "meet the family" because she was sure he would impress everybody with his Harvard degree and command of the English language. On the other hand, your dad thinks she brought him home because, deep down, she really wanted to piss him off. You know, he "doesn't look like" any of her former boyfriends and he "has a funny name".

Thirty seconds after she introduces him, she runs off to talk to her girl cousins about how "dreamy" he is. While they're over in the corner "oohing" and "ahhing" over his turtle neck, tweed coat with patches wearing physique, you're stuck listening to him going "blah-blah-blah-blah" about some hopey, changey community organizing he did ten years ago to help get a light bulb changed in a condemned building. Five minutes in you're starting to glance around none to surreptitiously for a way out when you suddenly recall that "Uncle John" asked you to get him another beer.

Later on you see him holding court with a bunch of the college aged kids who listen rapturously to his empty oratory. They haven't got a clue what he's talking about, but he sounds like he does and, besides, he has an exotic name. He went to Harvard, you know, and might have an answer to healing the rift in the time-space continuum.

The adults, on the other hand, have all drifted away to the periphery of the back deck, studiously avoiding Hopey-changey guy because he just couldn't stop himself from lecturing them about the evils of barbecuing with charcoal instead of some environmentally friendly bio-fuel. Like corn husks or dried cow dung when everybody knows it takes twice as much to cook with, costs twice as much to buy and makes the steak taste like crap.

You have no idea what your sister sees in him. Seriously, the dude sounds like your old calculus teacher and drinks foreign beer that looks, smells and tastes like warm cow piss on a hot August day. Oh, crap, he's looking over your way. "Hey! Uncle John! You need another beer?"

"Uncle Joe" Biden: He's that uncle that married into the family. You don't know why or to whom he was married, he's just been around a long time. He's kind of creepy. He has a tendency to hug all the women too long and give them that extra squeeze at the end. He's like the persistent used car salesman that has had his teeth whitened too much and wears a bad comb over. Every time he shows up it seems like he's trying to convince you to join him in another stupid @$$ deal that is supposed to make you rich over night. Of course, you know, his fancy car is leased and he sub-leases that condo.

Right on time, Uncle Joe is pontificating on some subject too loud and, yeah, there he goes, he just put his foot in his mouth. You can tell because your mom has that half-stunned, half-mad look on her face like she wants to clobber him with the potato salad spoon. Your dad takes him by the arm real quick and leads him over to that community organizer guy. Maybe the two of them can talk each other to death.

Two minutes later, half the young women standing around Professor Cool suddenly remember they have to go help put out the food or something. Some of the guys decide to go shoot some hoops. Uncle Joe just puts off that kind of vibe. Professor Cool is looking a little annoyed that he got stuck with Uncle Joe; like he wishes he could go join the pick up game, but he's too polite and maybe just a little conceited. He won't just leave his remaining acolytes to the old wind bag.

Now they are both trying to out pontificate each other. Uncle Joe keeps interrupting Professor Cool with some stunningly stupid observations. Another half of their little college crowd drifts away and the only ones left are the real die hard "I want to be a radical change agent, I just don't want to have to go to those stupid sit ins like my hippy parents did" kids.

Uncle Joe is drinking a Heineken. He tips it up and holds it in front of him so the label shows. As if to say, "see, I drink foreign beer, too." Dude wouldn't know a foreign beer if it smacked him in his head.

Crap. Now they've lost most of their captive audience and they're looking around for their next victims. "Hey! Uncle John! How about another beer?" Seriously, if you're going to have to listen to some old guy's long @$$ story you might as well listen to Uncle John tell the one about the time when he was a POW and he flipped the guards the bird after they just finished torturing him for ten hours. Gotta admit, Uncle John had some balls back in his day and he actually DID something, not sat around and talked about it.

"Cousin Sarah" Palin: You didn't even know you had a cousin Sarah until Uncle John introduces her. Okay, yeah, he did mention something one time about a second cousin, three times removed who lived in an igloo with a bunch of kids, sewed moccasins out of moose hide from a moose she tracked ten miles through a blizzard while simultaneously running the entire state of Alaska, but you never thought you were actually going to meet her.

I've just about had it with the left. You try to debate points, and they just act like crazy nutbars.

Here's an example: On another blog site, I asked a troll what if any criticism he had of Obama. He demanded I list mine of McCain. So I did. I don't like McCain on illegal immigration, torture, ANWR, global warming and campaign finance reform. The troll kept asking where were my criticism. I kept telling the troll, scroll up. He kept demanding my criticisms. I then realized I was dealing with an absolute batshit crazy person. The sad thing is that other people on that site are even now trying to debate the nutbar.

Part III

Wow! She is smokin' hot. Except she's got that husband who won the Iron Dog something or other four times. You're not sure exactly what that entails, but anything with the word "iron" in it makes you try to keep acting like you're not looking at her while you chug your Miller Gold.

She knows how to be the perfect guest. She brought side dishes and two deserts. Your dad announces that the meat is done. Automatically, Cousin Sarah starts jumping in and organizing everybody to straighten the tables, lay out the food, set out the plates and get this show on the road. Your mom and dad are pretty impressed how fast she gets everybody moving. Usually, the family has to get browbeat for fifteen minutes while they grudgingly and grumpily bring their @$$es to the table, then sit around and wait to be served.

Uncle John's beaming like a new daddy handing out cigars. He just knew everybody was going to like Cousin Sarah. Professor Cool, community organizer guy comes over and starts in, "Now, hold on. Just hold on a second. I'm the community organizer and she's not doing it right. I mean, sure, she's shot a moose and run a state, but I know how to organize a community and this is not how you organize a community. First, we need a meeting..."

Nobody's listening. Uncle Joe tries to get in on the show, too. He saunters over to where Cousin Sarah is standing, holding a baby on her hip, a bowl of baked beans in one hand and the instructions for erecting the big tent out on the lawn in the other. "Hey, little lady. That looks too hard. Let me help you." Then he takes the bowl of baked beans, sits it on the table and acts like he just successfully negotiated a treaty between Russia and Georgia.

Everybody wants to talk to Sarah. The moms about raising children and paying bills. The working moms about balancing work, children and paying the bills. Career women about the challenges of doing business, how to motivate people and the most efficient methods to get it done. The guys want to talk about fishing and hunting. The older guys about running efficient government, corruption and energy. Her husband Todd is a lucky guy. Pretty cool, too.

Over in the corner, your sister and some of her friends are making catty remarks about how she's running around with all those kids, shooting stuff *ugh* and generally making them look like a bunch of unaccomplished school girls. No one can be all of those things and definitely no woman. Women have to choose to either be a mom or a career woman. Besides, there is no way they are going to have four kids, live in a freaking igloo and shoot moose. Not that anyone asked them to, but just in case someone gets the big idea. They give all the guys the stink eye.

Did you hear? She actually wanted to pray before eating dinner! What is she? Some throw back to the 1950's? Now she's helping pick up the mess after dinner without being asked. Is she deliberately trying to make everyone look bad? What the hell is wrong with her? She is sooo setting women back like a gazillion years. Doesn't she know that the men should be helping clean up the mess and watching the babies, too? Oh. They are. That b*tch!

She drinks Pabst! Out of can! At least, it looks like she's drinking a beer. It looks like the same can she had earlier. Geez! She's a damn tee-totaler. She's just holding the beer so no one feels uncomfortable.

You just sit there drinking your beer enjoying the whole scene. This has got to be the best damn family barbecue in years. Man, you hope it doesn't end too soon. You catch Uncle John's eye and lift your beer in salute. You gotta hand it to the old guy; he's still got a few kicks in his step.

You know things have changed. Your mom is so impressed with Cousin Sarah she might actually vote Republican this year.

What? Cousin Sarah is pointing at you? She wants you to get off your @$$ and help set up the tent.

Uncle John comes over and grabs another beer, "Come on, son. Let's get'er done!"

The Liberals just ran an advertisement against John McCain. YES THE DEMS ARE TRYING TO "SWIFTBOAT" MCCAIN! I could'nt believe it. They had some vet come on and say that in the Hanoi Hilton prison he "flew off the handle" and lost his temper and that this person wouldn't want "John McCains' finger anywhere near the button"! Of course its one of those "527 PACs" or whatever they are called (not officially associated with Obama campaign.)
Maybe this is old news to most people but this is the first ive seen of that advertisment. Despicable, and yes i thought the original "swiftboating" against Kerry was also disgusting. Im no political hack or hypocrite.

That is complete BS. He is a public man, and that is part of his public record.

It (the so-called Swift Boating) was not only completely justified, it was entirely predictable to anyone with half a brain, which includes John Kerry, and most, but not all, Democrats.

Absolutely. That was fair game. On the other hand, when the Democrats focus on anything associated with McCain's POW time, all it does is show the enormous difference between McCain's commitment to country and Obama's lack thereof. Go ahead: emphasize McCain's talking points. Just like in the Oriental game of Go, you should play away from strength, not into it.

I'm watching some Ike coverage on a link somebody provided above, and one of the feeds has a reporter whining about not being allowed to go into Galveston to check out the devastation. The authorities are trying to "control" the images, he apparently thinks, because they don't want people seeing Katrina-like devastation, and so are refusing media requests for access.

Or, perhaps, just perhaps, it could be that first responders and repair-people cannot move around to do their jobs when there is a ton of traffic around. We saw that here in Baton Rouge. People got out and started driving around, and the repair crews were delayed in getting to where they needed to be. Which of course, delayed repairs to give us our electricity back, which of course, everybody complained about as they got into their cars and drove around, further delaying the repair crews, and round and round it went.

Next this guy got onto the lack of ice, water, etc., faulting the gov't for not getting supplies to these people immediately. Well, why didn't those people leave? They were given notice, for crying out loud. Plus, the supplies are stored out of harm's way, and have to be brought into the area, and that simply takes time.

Probably a good thing I never considered a job as a reporter - I wouldn't have fit in.

The young people I spoke with last night (in their twenties and thirties) are divided. The sober ones who have real jobs and ambition are for McCain/Palin. The stoners who work at low-end jobs are worried about actually having to work harder at being stoners without benefit of gummit or family support.

The sober ones outnumbered the stoners. :)

Seeing the historic collapse of Obama before my naked eyes, I'm absolutely astonished looking back at all those huge rallies he was getting back in Feb-May period. It was truly scary, but in the back of my mind I always figured that it was just a large turnout of rabid leftists and not a sign of swing voters flocking to Obama. It turns out - I was 100% right.

i'd love to see them make an internet video ad showing Obama talking to different groups with different accents. personally i think people have a very negative reaction to this, but not everyone watches enough to pick up on it, so many are probably not aware that he does it.

after showing different clips that illustrate the accent changes, the voice-over could come on at the end of the ad and say something like "Barack Obama, deceptively packaged, not ready to lead."

People will think it's "grabbing at straws".

John F. Kerry and Obama are both similar in that, they are both men with repeated anti-American activities in their past, which are publicly documented, in their books and on film and video.

The Democrats, of course, think that this is such a plus, that they nominated both of these men for their candidate for President of the United States.

And yet, in the unfathomable depths of their almost impenetrable layers of collective ignorance, the Democrats will be outraged when the opposition uses this cornucopia of evidence against them, in a public forum.

I think she is too smart also to settle for VP at this point just to bail HIM out. But she "could" agree to save the "Democrat party" by taking the number one slot. Obama is never going to agree to do that.

If Obama loses this time around, remember, she would likely be facing him in a primary in 2012. She wants to avoid that. Much better to let him "sink his own ship" because should would have his failure to win as her ammunition should he decide to try again in 2012.

True, but I was thinking of Malbec.

Malbec is a rather tannic fellow too. It has historically been used as a blending grape, but some wineries in California are starting to make it as the dominant varietal. One of my favorites wineries, Mauritson in the Dry Creek appellation of Sonoma County, is about to release its first "named" Malbec. I tasted a barrel sample this spring: not sure that it is my style, but we'll see what happens when it is released.

Well, as my Dad used to say: "It's all good."

My house is up for sale and somebody is coming by to look at it soon. Happy trails, Lizards.

I'm thinking the only scenario that Hillary can actually be President is if McCain wins, fails badly like Bush and Democrats learn their lesson and don't nominate Obama again in 2012. However, McCain doesn't do the failin' thing to well - and he will have "POTUS in Training" to assist him aka The Palinator. Yah #140,

My understanding is that Ireland has lush and verdant soil and was one of the great bread baskets of Europe. She exported thousands of tons of dairy, beef, and lamb to England as the English confiscated all of the best land and allowed the native Irish to only use the poorest land for their survival. Hence the potato diet for the Irish which led to their near annihilation as a people when the blight occurred in the 1840's.

The English could have cared less and let them starve by the millions. Millions more emigrated (the lucky ones, even though hundreds of thousand of them died aboard ship)

I believe my facts are correct. Check them out.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the federal prosecutors' Investigative Committee, said in a television broadcast that there was a failure in one of the Boeing 737-500's two engines.

Failure of a single engine does not make 737's fly into the ground.
Radio and radar contact was lost simultaneously.

"My neighbours and other witnesses told me that it was burning in the air. It looked like a comet. It hit the ground opposite the next house, trailing like fireworks in the sky," she said.

Not indicative of engine failure, engine failure even castrophic radio and radar would have continued for awhile.

Earlier this year a twister passed over my dad's neighborhood. Ripped the top off a tree in his front yard, luckily it only did some minor damage to his deck and roof. Tore apart an old playhouse in his backyard. Other neighbors fared worse ... one had an entire large tree ripped up by its roots and and then knocked right across the roof. Another had a tree land across his truck. Other large trees blew down and fell across fences and damaged roofs.

Jayker

My recollection is that the population in the various counties dropped by varying amounts. The bigger drops tended to be toward its SW corner, where my ancestors left. IIRC, it was a drop of 25%-30% in those areas, between emigration and starvation. I wouldn't call that "near annihilation", but it was still pretty bad.

Even if he doesn't, so what? He can have an assistant do it for him. I am not electing a data-entry operator for gods sake.

That's not the point -- the Dem claim was that he couldn't use a computer (really, I don't care one way or another) but the defense was that his hands wouldn't allow it, presumably from having his bones broken in captivity, so the Dem claim was a slap at what he went through in his captivity. Barring evidence that his hands preclude him from computing, I don't see it that way.

I respect the man and will definitely vote for him, but I'll be honest about why.

Anybody who missed the Bronco-Charger game probably missed the most entertaining game of the season.

Broncos (H) 39, Chargers 38
In the last 2 minutes, official 'missed a call' and blew the whistle early, letting the Broncos retain the football at the Charger 10 yard line.
Broncos scored with about :40 on the clock. (down 1, 37-38)
Went for 2 points, got it. (up 1, 39-38)
Chargers got ball back,
last play of game was incomplete Charger pass in end zone.

Chargers have lost at the end of the game twice now (0-2)
Chargers don't suck, but this doesn't seem to be a magic year.

According to the story in Forbes:

In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate's savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy.

The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. "She's a whiz on the keyboard, and I'm so laborious," McCain admits.

Turned my neighbor's stomach.

Obama has the accent of somoen who studied black English and black speechifying as an adult.

As Camille Paglia points out, Obama also uses this to sound folksy to white working class people and it comes out wrong, wrong, wrong.

Except they made fun of his NOT being able to do emails and concluded it meant he didn't use a computer.

The reason he doesn't do emails is because of his injuries. THey "assumed" he didn't type his own emails because he didn't know HOW to use a computer.

Both arms were broken as were his fingers. And they were not properly set.

He can't tie his shoelaces either and with the Democrat logic that would mean he doesn't wear shoes. He also can't throw a ball, comb his hair.

They made a false assumption........no they didn't make fun of his injuries but made fun of his not using a computer without even bothering to actually confirm WHY he is not able to type.

Exactly, and this is the party supposedly of the poor oppressed people who should not be discriminated against because of physical handicap. Add that the handicap is from being a POW, and Obama and Co. really have dug a pit for themselves.

Why in the world would we NOT remind folks why McCain is incapable of using e-mail?

Been through a number of hurricanes on NC coast. The main reason you don't leave is that the authorities won't let you back for a week or longer. So the property that could have been saved will be moldy and nasty or looted by the time you can get back. Every person in any kind of authority becomes a tin-horn dictator control-freak and who wants to deal with that? Unless it's a Cat 4, I'll stay with my home.

My thinking as well. There is a roster of the POW's and those that came back do seem to know who the others were. They better have a name for this "vet" =======

Though I find it a fishy story that ANY vet who was a prisoner of war would make a comment about another flying off the handle. I don't imagine ANY of them were exactly thrilled to be there!

If the so called vet is named you can check on whether he was a POW or not in the National Archives.

Check them out.

re: #362 christheprofessor

The Obama people heard the McCain doesn't and "can't" send email. They chose to run with that and presume it means that he doesn't understand/know email.

There are three things going on here.

1) Ageism. The underlying accusation that "McCain is an old fart and doesn't understand things like email and cell phones, like you cool youth do, so you shouldn't vote for him. He's so out-of-it."

2) McCain is ignorant of technology. Reminds me of the Bush is a moron charge. Yet they are the ones ignorant considering they couldn't find out he was the friggin CHAIRMAN of the Senate Telecommunications subcommittee.

3) He "can't" type which they took as "doesn't know how" but is really that he finds it uncomfortable because of torture. Similar to when they implied he wasn't fit to be president because he "couldn't even figure out how to go to a dentist" when they were mocking his teeth, without knowing the teeth were broken out by his communist captors.

They screwed up in three ways here, and we should hammer them on all three.

Obama has the accent of somoen who studied black English and black speechifying as an adult.

As Camille Paglia points out, Obama also uses this to sound folksy to white working class people and it comes out wrong, wrong, wrong.

Yes indeed.
Southerners are often quite touchy about this, BTW.

When Obamania first started, I actually thought Obama would do better with Southern whites than John Kerry did, particularly in Appalachian areas. Kerry just screams "condescending Yankee elitist" to the average Southerner. But a black man doesn't look like a "Yankee schoolteacher," doesn't fit the stereotype. And until he started getting snarky in the heat of the campaign, Obama appeared to have a laid back temperament and good manners. An easier sell down here, IMO, if he played it straight. The fakery really is a terrible mistake.

(The Rev Wright thing and the Berlin trip destroyed his hopes here anyway, but.........)

It's a little unclear what his physical capabilities are. In an interview just this past June, he said that he was learning to use a computer for himself.

Q: But do you go on line for yourself?

Mr. McCain: They go on for me. I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don’t expect to be a great communicator, I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need – including going to my daughter’s blog first, before anything else.

He didn't seem to suggest that there was any physical limitation. The older interviews and this newer one seem to be at odds with each other. It's a puzzle.

What part of "Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications subcommittee" and "Senate's savviest member" is unclear?

Just because it isn't mentioned in one place doesn't mean the physical limitation wasn't mentioned in another.

If the Obama people were technology savvy, maybe they could have googled up more than one interview on the subject and found what we did in less than 15 minutes of the story breaking.

399 Dewie  Sun, Sep 14, 2008 5:21:59pm

There is another manerism about Obama..... the "TOUCH".
That is something that was honed as a CO.... it makes it "personal" between you and the person you are talking to. If anyone caught Obama on O'Reilly..... he leaned foreward and touched Bills knee before making a point.
Obama, I have to admit, is a very skilled politician...... perhaps one of the all time greats when it comes to "capturing the room" and that is what is so dangerous about him.......the ability to sell chain to a drowning man and having him believe that he could use it to pull himself up.... once he reached bottom.

re: #391 christheprofessor

I know what you're saying too, it's just tough for me to separate the issues that way. I firmly believe that there is an anti-American contingent in the Democratic party that center, center left dems have subconsciously chosen to ignore. I believe there are many democrats that would take great offense to this tactic because of McCain's service, age, etc. not just because of an "injury".

Re: what McCain and Palin represent, I think McCain has demonstrated a fantastic ability to walk and chew gum at the same time, i.e. I think both messages need to be sent (via e-mail or whatever ;). One could argue that they are the same message. McCain represents honor in government, Palin represents substance in government. To minimize either, especially in such a haphazard way by the Dems, is disrespectful and stupid. Frankly, the attack disqualifies the attacker of any reasonable discourse.

Anecdote, I talked with my father in law about the e-mail thing. He's a D, blue collar, former Marine. Hates "rich" people, thinks Repubs are the party of the rich. I talked to him about the e-mail thing and McCain's inability. Easy enough to get the man out to not just vote, but he's talking about it to his buddies.

re: #388 Silhouette

McCain is surging, as well he should. It's the validity of his ideas (as opposed to Obama's dearth) that is striking a chord with the American people.

There is no need to go there. If we have to pull the "He called a war hero a computer illiterate when in fact he just can't type because of the torture" card, let's do it then.

I want as many Americans as possible voting for McCain because they recognize the nihilism of the left/Dem/MSM school of thought, and the time we spend playing "Gotcha!" takes away from that.
