A study of 32,000 people in the UK (oops, thats a bad start) showed 1% of males considered themselves homosexual and .6% of females, likewise.

We are told that their behaviour is normal.

Luckily I managed to make it through grad school with only one class on Freud- that on the history of Psychology.

Freud saw only disturbed people, and he really wasn't able to do anything for them. Combine that with his own demons- including his drug addiction- and the statement sounds more and more like rationalization.

MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.

Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.

People want to go back and I can understand that, but for pete's sake use some common sense. Fortunately Ike spared us in NW La, we only got 2-3 inches of rain where I am at and wind blew pretty bad, our people are cleaning up and the AEP SWEPCO did a stellar job of restoring the electricity for our area. Fortunately Ike spared us in NW La, we only got 2-3 inches of rain where I am at and wind blew pretty bad, our people are cleaning up and the AEP SWEPCO did a stellar job of restoring the electricity for our area. Schools will be out for Texas until power is restored. now my mom has to listen to her 76 year old cousin gripe 'til the electricity is back on.

Wow, SWEPCO? What town are you in?

I just wondered if you want any reports on goofiness at LGF. There are so many new features now! The rounded reverse video is one of the neatest ones.

Don't know if everyone has seen the news. Lehman Brothers is filing for bankruptcy and Merrill Lynch is merging with BofA. Dow Jones futures are down 300 points.

Some of these big companies are going to have to fail on their own, with all the pain that WILL cause, in order to start fixing the fundamentals in this market. We the taxpayers can't keep bailing out people and businesses that make bad financial decisions.

Still, looks like between oil volatility and the financial sector, Monday should be an interesting day.

If Jesus had been a community organizer he would have convinced the locals to be aggrieved about the money changers in the Temple, and they would have mounted a demonstration. He wouldn't have placed himself out front.

If Jesus had been a community organizer, he wouldn't have had to turn water into wine at Cana; there would have been a protest and the local wine merchants would have created a set-aside program.

If Jesus had been a community organizer, he would not have had to do the miracle of the loaves and fishes, because the Galilean WIC program would have furnished enough vouchers for the entire population to be fed.

A thousand updings!

The government caused a lot of the problems as far as I'm concerned. They refused to fix Fannie and Freddie and they pressured banks to make loans to people that were clearly not qualified in the interest of fairness. Not saying that banks don't share a lot of the blame, but the government proved why they shouldn't get their paws in business.

U.S. asset prices whipsaw as Lehman talks falter

On Sunday, a rare emergency trading session opened in New York to allow Wall Street dealers in the $455 trillion derivatives market to reduce their exposure to a potential bankruptcy filing by Lehman.

U.S. regulators and bankers were making last-ditch efforts on Sunday to prevent toxic assets from ailing Lehman Brothers spilling into global markets and rupturing investor faith in the international financial system.

While the fate of the U.S. financial system was the focus of most early trading, initial reports that the passing of Hurricane Ike through country's energy production centre had not severely damaged infrastructure in Texas saw benchmark oil prices fall more than to $2 to a six-month low below $99 a barrel.

Enough with the dribs and drabs, let's blow it all out, give me the capitulation!

Maybe Barack Obama can answer for all "community activists" as to whether they helped bring about the current financial crisis...

In the 1980s, groups such as the activists at ACORN began pushing charges of "redlining" - claims that banks discriminated against minorities in mortgage lending. In 1989, sympathetic members of Congress got the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act amended to force banks to collect racial data on mortgage applicants; this allowed various studies to be ginned up that seemed to validate the original accusation.

(snip)

Sound crazy? You bet. Those "outdated" standards existed to limit defaults. But bank regulators required the loosened underwriting standards, with approval by politicians and the chattering class. A 1995 strengthening of the Community Reinvestment Act required banks to find ways to provide mortgages to their poorer communities. It also let community activists intervene at yearly bank reviews, shaking the banks down for large pots of money.

Banks that got poor reviews were punished; some saw their merger plans frustrated; others faced direct legal challenges by the Justice Department.

What's the point?

/if the market totally collapses (not going to happen), they're not even edible with a nice vinaigrette

If I've got a shitload of silver dimes (/Blazing Saddles) that I bought at a buck a piece and they go up to 2 bucks a piece, that's 100% profit, which is cool.

If the zombie apocalypse comes (not the good Zombie kind), they actually do have an intrinsic value that could be useful for barter.

True that. But, as you note, if the economy doesn't completely collapse, there are still buyers and coin shops, so I could sell them.

Anyway, I'm not Jill Survivalist with my life savings in pre-1965 dimes--I'm pretty well diversified, and this is just a sideline thing. :)

Saudi Arabia Leaves Opec

Expulsion of U.S. Ambassadors to Venezuela and Bolivia

Two Russian Bombers land in Venezuela

The Link about OPEC leads to:

Saudi Arabia walked out on OPEC yesterday, saying it would not honor the cartel's production cut. It was tired of rants from Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and the well-dressed oil minister from Iran.

As the world's largest crude exporter, the kingdom in the desert took its ball and went home.

As the Saudis left the building, the message was shockingly clear. “Saudi Arabia will meet the market’s demand,” a senior OPEC delegate told the New York Times. “We will see what the market requires and we will not leave a customer without oil."

OPEC will still have lavish meetings and a nifty headquarters in Vienna, Austria, but the Saudis have made certain the the organization has lost its teeth. Even though the cartel argued that the sudden drop in crude was due to "oversupply", OPEC's most powerful member knows that the drop may only be temporary. Cold weather later this year could put pressure on prices. So could a decision by Russia that it wants to "punish" the U.S. and European Union for a time. That political battle is only at its beginning.

This could get interesting.

re: #183 Dahveed

The government caused a lot of the problems as far as I'm concerned. They refused to fix Fannie and Freddie and they pressured banks to make loans to people that were clearly not qualified in the interest of fairness. Not saying that banks don't share a lot of the blame, but the government proved why they shouldn't get their paws in business.

The mortgage shenanigans couldn't have occurred without Fannie and Freddie. The shaky borrowers were too big a risk, the lenders needed a way to make the loans, but lose the risk.

Enter the Feds.

The risky loans could be bundled with others and sold en mass to the government. That's what fueled the bubble -- risk laundering.

Aussie Scientists: Eating vegetables induces brain shrinkage

MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.

Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.

This explains a lot, actually.

Wow. Proud to be a carnivore. Well, mostly, anyway.

..and still no sun spots. We are in for a very cold several decades....

SOHO MDI Continuum Latest Image -now.

Alec Rawls is perhaps best known for his coverage of the Flight93 Memorial flustercluck, but he's had a few articles about implications of the current prolonged solar minimum on climate.

Non-homogeneity of sunspot numbers a problem, but the more important record of solar activity is in the geologic record

Global warming alarmists knew cooling was coming, were hoping to secure restrictions on economic activity first

Global warming Idiots: "Sunspot and temperature correlations do not prove causality."

BHO's stated position on Global Warming might as well have been scripted by Al Gore, Maurice Strong, and George Soros:

Barack Obama's plan on GLOBAL WARMING

Obama: Climate change most serious environmental issue

If it was just snake oil, it wouldn't be so bad, but this broad agenda to "control" climate has been carefully designed from the beginning to do serious damage to western ecomomies. Strong has indicated that his goal is to undo the industrial development and diminish the economic power of the west.

I can attest to that. For years I ate little red meat, not as a conscious choice it just happened that way.
Recently I've had a craving for meat and now have the means to buy it and the wherewithal to cook it properly. Man! It has made a difference in how I feel and I believe has helped me regain better short term memory. Of course this is all subjective and all but I do feel better.
