Sciencedebate 2008

Science | Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 9:57:11 am PDT

A grassroots initiative led by a group of concerned scientists has produced an excellent, highly detailed comparison of the presidential candidates’ positions on scientific issues, by asking both of them the same 14 questions and publishing their answers side by side: Sciencedebate 2008. Great stuff that you’ll never see in the TV debates.

Right off the bat with the first question- 0bama says he'll "increase funding" while McCain says he'll streamline regulations.

All I know is there isn't enough money in the world to pay for all the things 0bama says he's going to fund, and I think science and technology would be getting the short end of the stick. Didn't he say he'd cut funding to NASA?

11 victor_yugo  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:06:52am

I got in no prob.

And then quickly found out how little they each know.

Why can't their advisors actually understand what it is they advise about?

12 Fat Jolly Penguin  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:06:56am

Then again, McCain on general energy policies:

In the progress of other alternative energy sources -- such as wind, solar, geothermal, tide, and hydroelectric --government must be an ally but not an arbiter.

The Messiah:

My programs focus both on a greatly expanded program of federally funded energy research and development

They both want to increase the number of students taking science and engineering degrees, but actually, neither recognizes that students take degrees where they expect to get a job. With all the publicized offshoring, fewer students are going into these fields.
I'm not sure how to fix this; maybe when the government buys equipment and services, account for how much comes back in taxes from US employers and employees, and subtract that from the cost when determining the lowest cost supplier.

Cap and Trade is an economy killer. It essentially limits economic expansion.

17 Basho  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:08:05am

The energy responses (Question 3) shows the main contrast between the two candidates. Obama talks about investing in some new clean form of energy in the future, McCain talks about investing in clean forms of energy that actually exist in the real world.

18 simonml  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:08:08am

That sums up the philoshies of the two parties (although the Republicans have strayed from theirs lately). One party wants the spend money and take control, the other wants you to do it yourself, but will stand out of your way to allow that to happen.

NObama - National Security

"Technology leadership is key to our national security. It’s essential to create a coherent new defense technology strategy to meet the kinds of threats we may face—asymmetric conflicts, urban operations, peacekeeping missions, and cyber, bio, and proliferation threats, as well as new kinds of symmetric threats."

Thought he was going to gut weapon system development that use.....ummmm.... new technology.

" I will lead the nation to be prepared to meet this 21st- century challenge by investing again in math and science education"

Is this national security or a Harvard Debate Senator NObama?

31 Basho  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:12:32am

I noticed Obama's response on national security talked a lot about increasing military research, yet for some reason he failed to mention how he plans to eliminate missile defense and nuclear weapons.

33 jcm  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:13:33am

Obama the ignorant.
There can no longer be any doubt that human activities are influencing the global climate

McCain not far behind.
The same fossil-fuels that power our economic engine also produced greenhouse gases that retain heat and thus threaten to alter the global climate.

Is climate changing, yes, that's what climate does, change.

Do humans have a climate foot print? Maybe, but in comparison to the climate cycles it's minuscule at best and certainly not the climate driver.

Worse. 0bama's policies have the government spending money to "solve problems"; McCain generally wants to find ways to let private industry solve the same problems. We know how well central planning works in things like this.
I'm surprised 0bama didn't talk of several "five year plans" like the Communists used to.

While there is a lot of similarity in both candidates' positions, the contrast on HOW to achieve the results are strikingly vast. Obama wants more and more Nationalization, Governmental Regulation, Governmental Oversight, and Pie In The Sky Future Solutions, while McCain is for streamlining the process with less Government.

39 jcm  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:15:41am

On NASA:

McCain:

As President, I will --

• Ensure that space exploration is top priority and that the U.S. remains a leader;

• Commit to funding the NASA Constellation program to ensure it has the resources it needs to begin a new era of human space exploration.

• Review and explore all options to ensure U.S. access to space by minimizing the gap between the termination of the Space Shuttle and the availability of its replacement vehicle;

• Ensure the national space workforce is maintained and fully utilized; Complete construction of the ISS National Laboratory;

• Seek to maximize the research capability and commercialization possibilities of the ISS National Laboratory;

• Maintain infrastructure investments in Earth-monitoring satellites and support systems;

• Seek to maintain the nation's space infrastructure;

• Prevent wasteful earmarks from diverting precious resources from critical scientific research;

• and ensure adequate investments in aeronautics research.

The ONE:

There is currently no organizational authority in the federal government with a sufficiently broad mandate to oversee a comprehensive and integrated strategy and policy dealing with all aspects of the government’s space-related programs, including those being managed by NASA, the Department of Defense, the National Reconnaissance Office, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Transportation, and other federal agencies.

McCain: Increase and support exploration and discovery. Obama: Increase the federal bureaucracy.

Gee, that's a hard choice. Not.

42 Sharmuta  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:16:03am

McCain on National Security:

As President, I will strengthen the military, shore up our alliances, and ensure that the nation is capable of protecting the homeland, deterring potential military challenges, responding to any crisis that endangers American security, and prevailing in any conflict we are forced to fight.

0bama:

As president I will also ensure that our defense, homeland security, and intelligence agencies have the strong research leadership needed to revitalize our defense research activities and achieve breakthrough science that can be quickly converted into new capabilities for our security.

Mr. 0bama- what about winning?

On Genetics research 0bama says:

I also recognize that the power of modern genetics has raised important ethical, legal, and social issues that require careful study. For example, new developments in human genetics allow individuals to be informed about their risks of various diseases; such information can be useful for diagnosing and treating disease, but it can also be misused by employers or insurers to discriminate. For this reason, I have been a long-time supporter of the recently passed Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act. In addition, concerned about the premature introduction of genetic testing into the public domain without appropriate oversight, I introduced the Genomics and Personalized Medicine Act of 2007 aimed at ensuring the safety and accuracy of such testing.

56 Kosh's Shadow  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 10:23:57am

McCain did say that he supports private space development, but I wish he'd come out stronger for that. In particular, the government should guarantee purchase of a certain number of launches, meeting certain parameters, at a certain cost, and then stay out of it until private industry develops those launchers. That is, no government money until delivery, but guaranteed if the launcher meets straightforward specs - weight to specified orbit, vibration and temperature within limits, etc.
And that means the government can't have its own system after the current Orion project, unless industry doesn't deliver. We need to complete Orion, because it could take longer for private projects, given where Orion is now in development, and because most private ones will be unmanned at first.

The Committee plays a major role in the development of technology policy, specifically any legislation affecting communications services, the Internet, cable television and other technologies. Actually, it is more:

Vostok Ice cores showed CO2 rises lags temperature, (yep CO2 isn't the temp driver) by 800 years, which coincidentally is the time it takes the oceans warm up. Warm liquids have a lower Pco2, which means as oceans warm they release CO2.

Yeah - what a surprise!

Thing is - they did that here, 11 years ago. What a dreadful awakening; more rules, less money (gotta look after the poor, work-shy people first, see!), and the latest instalment in this saga was that the govenrment forced a couple of astronomy/astrophysics research institutes to join up - and cut their grants.
Thus, the world-famous radio-telescope at Jodrell banks is looking to be closed - for the lack of 8 million ££ ( about $14 million).

6 Guilty in Australia's Biggest Terrorism Trial

Jurors in Australia's biggest terrorism trial found six Muslim men guilty of being members of an extremist group that plotted to wage what prosecutors called "violent jihad" in the city of Melbourne. Four other men have been acquitted of related charges. From Sydney, Phil Mercer reports.

The jury found Abdul Nacer Benbrika, a Muslim cleric, guilty of planning to stage a violent religious war in Melbourne three years ago. Five of his followers were convicted of forming a terrorist organization.

The court was told that Benbrika's group had planned to attack a high-profile Australian-rules football match in Melbourne that attracted almost 100,000 fans. The prosecution also said the men had discussed killing the former Australian prime minister, John Howard, and identified railway stations as possible targets.

The cleric allegedly told his supporters that it was permissible to kill women, children and the elderly

Yes and no. Greenspan pumped excess M3 into the economy starting in 1996. That money will find something to speculate in, be it tulips, internet stocks or housing. Some of the loans were obviously done under political pressure, but some of them were done because people wanted to loan money to anything. If there is anyone I fault in this, it is Queen Elizabeth. When she knighted Sir Greenspan she should have slipped with her sword a bit. [kidding on that of course, but this is largely the result of Easy Alan].

After a quick skimming, the basic breakdown seems to be;

Obama - Expand current programs and make new ones (i.e. more spending)

McCain - Do more with less and go with what works (i.e. revisions and cutbacks)

Well, I'd go better than what McLame said on some of the stuff he's "advocating".

Health care - Get rid of most (not all) of the Gov't meddling/rules. Most of all, get rid of the lawsuit industry by pusing for "loser pays"!

Climate change - no such animal as CO2 greenhouse gases causing it. Try to eliminate dumping in the atmosphere and water, yes, but all the rest is heresay/speculation/bad science.

Embryonic stem cell research? Not on my watch! Embryo stem cells are almost useless, they have a high cancer/mutation rate. Not even going to mention the moral problem with "harvesting" embryos for the stem cells.

Energy? Drill! Give incentives for coming up with new energy sources (but we need to get the Gubmint out of the research end and encourage private sector). We have a lack of brainpower to solve these problems due to lack of motivation (read: money) and edumacated people.

National Security - Kill the terrorists and anybody that harbors them. You listening, Iran and Pakistan?

Water - Set the private sector loose on solving the problem. We waste a tremendous amount right now, and with population pressures we can't afford the waste now.

Research - See "serendipity", otherwise known as "Bread cast upon the waters". Keep Gubmint interference to a minimum, encourage where necessary.

Summation: Less Gubmint involvement, more private sector. This applies to darn near everything.

Get out of my pocket, Freddie and Fannie!

No, not at all. He was just a real Renaissance man. Poet and author, as everyone knows, but also a successful musician, composer, cartoonist, screenwriter and narrative writer.

He was a military man, and got his start as the cartoonist for the Stars and Stripes paper.

And if I remember correctly, he wrote the music and lyrics for a song that Johnny Cash sang. A little ditty called "A Boy Named Sue."

I could go on.

Technology leadership is key to our national security. According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.

While in Iraq, Obama also tried to persuade the US commanders, including Gen. David Petraeus, to suggest a "realistic withdrawal date." They declined.

Here is a link to a video showing that Sarah Palin's former Pentacostal church (the one she grew up in and belonged to until recently) teaches that terrorists attacks on Israel are G-d's punishment of Jews for not believing in Jesus. The first half is background information on her faith (speaking in tongues, etc.). The second half speaks more specifically about her church's views on Jews and Israel. What is implied is that Sarah Palin's foreign policy will be directly motivated and guided by her fundamentalist beliefs. If the church, or her direct line from God, tells her "Jews should be punished", what then?

Can anyone point me to a rebuttal of the following:

Here is a link to a video showing that Sarah Palin's former Pentacostal church (the one she grew up in and belonged to until recently) teaches that terrorists attacks on Israel are G-d's punishment of Jews for not believing in Jesus. The first half is background information on her faith (speaking in tongues, etc.). The second half speaks more specifically about her church's views on Jews and Israel. What is implied is that Sarah Palin's foreign policy will be directly motivated and guided by her fundamentalist beliefs. If the church, or her direct line from God, tells her "Jews should be punished", what then?

The other thing by opting out of public funding Obama has to fund raise. McCain doesn't. Fund raising takes time and money.

I know, but the Orion won't be ready when the current purchase of Soyuz runs out. This would be an alternative to giving the Russians more money.
And it would have the side benefit of jump-starting some real development in space.

Look back at the way the airlines were developed. The Post Office had an airmail system. They started flying the planes themselves, but got out, and contracted to private companies. That was the start of the airlines, because they could carry passengers as well as mail, and had the airmail fees to buy the planes and get started.
We need something like that for space - the government should be the customer.

In July, Obama spent $57 million — more than any prior month and more than the $51 million he collected that month. A large chunk of that cash went to the salaries of his expanding field operation.

So- take off $6 million to pay for the month before, and now he's having to use that $60 million to pay for ads and travel in states that should have been safely his. Plus he still has to raise more. The guy's not the best strategist.

Obama and Iraq

Barack Obama's campaign rests
On calls for troop withdrawal
"To keep them in Iraq," said he,
"'Tis opposite of moral."

Yet does Obama himself hold
By that which he solicits?
There is a tale not fully told
Of overtures illicit.

The troop withdrawal he sought to slow
So he could take the credit
And like the communists he knows
The history he'd edit.

His pandering to Daily Kos
Is all that he affirms
All heedless of objective fact
And costs in human terms.

Can be sung to the tune off "Yankee Doodle", except it doesn't have a chorus.

There's a whole lot of hot air. Wind farm projects get a whole lot of opposition, and not just from the oil companies and energy companies that use conventional power sources.

You've got bureaucrats who don't know how to get these projects approved, especially the offshore wind power projects. So, they talk about how we have to go green, and yet they do nothing to make it happen or drag their feet and things go far slower than the urgency portrayed by the eco-leftists. In some ways, that might be a good thing than pushing us to use technologies that provide little to no benefit (see biofuels that use food like corn as a source).

330 lifeofthemind  Mon, Sep 15, 2008 12:02:47pm

This is how Obama spends when it is monopoly money. Imagine if he gets real money to play with. McCain strikes me as the type of person who turns out the lights when he leaves a room and shuts the gate after he passes through. Military families are not wealthy but they can be raised with the cultural attributes of how to handle money and power gracefully. That means being comfortable in using it but also respectful of where it comes from and not abusing it. To do so is vulgar. For examples in film of old fashioned military family culture see Noel Coward's "In Which We Serve." For a perfect example of what we expect from an American Aristocracy see "The Philadelphia Story."

Obama tries to hard, at everything. He is ostentatiously ascetic, no birthday presents or personal pleasures for him. He thinks it shows rectitude but in reality it just shows his egocentrism. He has no idea how to handle wealth or work with people who have wealth. He either works for them as an angry self denying lounge act or he manipulates them while concealing his contempt. Neither approach can last.

No money, no campaign.

Everything before hand will matter not a wit if his campaign goes silent for want of cash in October.

And to top it off- he's having to fight to retain states like MN, NY, MI, PA.....

The conditions could not have been better for the dems to get one of their own in the White House this election. Unfortunately for them- they put up a dud with no real campaigning experience- not to mention experience in general. Amazing how they've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Reposted from dying thread:

SHOCKA! Christians believe that you have to believe in Jesus to get into heaven!

I have heard Rabbis say that the Holocaust (as well as terrorist attacks) are a "wake up call" grom G-D. If you believe that EVERYTHING is from G-D, it's logical to assume that terrorist attacks and the Holocaust are also from G-D, however humans are given the free will to act to stop it.

That's different than sitting in a church week in week out for 20 years listening to a preacher say "G-D DAMN America."

Palin received a glowing endorsement from Chabad. It's always the secular Jews who get all hysterical over Christians expressing Christianity.

re: #261 Kosh's Shadow

I know, but the Orion won't be ready when the current purchase of Soyuz runs out. This would be an alternative to giving the Russians more money.
And it would have the side benefit of jump-starting some real development in space.

Look back at the way the airlines were developed. The Post Office had an airmail system. They started flying the planes themselves, but got out, and contracted to private companies. That was the start of the airlines, because they could carry passengers as well as mail, and had the airmail fees to buy the planes and get started.
We need something like that for space - the government should be the customer.

Take a look at the DC-X program that McDonnel-Douglas did for the BMDO's SSTO program - NASA turned 'em down cold for the Boeing X-33 which will never fly. The Delta Clipper was actually FLYING, and under $25M to boot! It would be flying today if Boeing hadn't of greased the palms of the NASA exec's...

Don't get me started on Boeing...

That encapsulates to me the entire left wing desire for showmanship over achievement. The only thing I'm irate about is that we hold a Lehman bond.

Yikes.

Well, I'm no authority, but I'm watching the jitters with interest. I'm not terribly worried, even with AIG's troubles.

The only thing I'm irate about is that we hold a Lehman bond.

It's at times like these I feel so much better that all my wealth is invested in Hummel figurines.

If you know what you're doing, yes. If you're a novice, I'd wait.

re: #375 just another four-letter word

Take a look at the DC-X program that McDonnel-Douglas did for the BMDO's SSTO program - NASA turned 'em down cold for the Boeing X-33 which will never fly. The Delta Clipper was actually FLYING, and under $25M to boot! It would be flying today if Boeing hadn't of greased the palms of the NASA exec's...

Don't get me started on Boeing...

JAFLW

Actually, the DC-X was rejected for the Lockheed-Martin VentureStar, which, like the Shuttle, tried to put too much in one basket - new Al-Li tanks, linear aerospike engine (which did work), new type of composite construction. Sure way to spend too much and get little in return.
We aren't familiar enough with launchers to take a lot of steps in the same craft; that's why I support throwing it open to private companies. Each will work on a few ideas, and get those right; then the best ideas can be used in the next generation, with its own improvements. In other words, evolutionary improvement.

There is a private company trying to resurrect the DC-X now.

Last word was 80 to 90 cents on the dollar. Not good, but I've seen worse.

If Chocolate was an investment strategy I would be rich instead of just fat.

You need to diversify. I've got half my assets tied up in commemorative NASCAR plates, with a small account dedicated to the fluid special-edition off-shore silver coinage.

We're witnessing a historic campaign alright, folks!

How to go from virtual shoe-in to meltdown in two months.

It seems to me that the start of his wobbly wheels was that campaign rally in Berlin. People did not like his dissing America & campaigning on foreign soil.
Then the football stadium narcissist acceptance with the Greek Columns.
The Wheels started to come off.
Then Sarah Palin, the wheels are almost off, but he could rally I guess.
It does look bad for him though.
