According to Hitchens, Obama may be right about something:
Recent accounts of murderous violence in the capital cities of two of our allies, India and Afghanistan, make it appear overwhelmingly probable that the bombs were not the work of local or homegrown "insurgents" but were orchestrated by agents of the Pakistani ISI. This is a fantastically unacceptable state of affairs, which needs to be given its right name of state-sponsored terrorism. Meanwhile, and on Pakistani soil and under the very noses of its army and the ISI, the city of Quetta and the so-called Federally Administered Tribal Areas are becoming the incubating ground of a reorganized and protected al-Qaida. Sen. Barack Obama has, if anything, been the more militant of the two presidential candidates in stressing the danger here and the need to act without too much sentiment about our so-called Islamabad ally. He began using this rhetoric when it was much simpler to counterpose the "good" war in Afghanistan with the "bad" one in Iraq. Never mind that now; he is committed in advance to a serious projection of American power into the heartland of our deadliest enemy. And that, I think, is another reason why so many people are reluctant to employ truthful descriptions for the emerging Afghan-Pakistan confrontation: American liberals can't quite face the fact that if their man does win in November, and if he has meant a single serious word he's ever said, it means more war, and more bitter and protracted war at that—not less.

Which "they" do you mean? McCain or Obama?
(Unless you mean Them!)
McCain's people. There was an item in the Post today.
McCain's surge in New York polling comes at a time when his national operatives have rebuffed requests from New York campaign chairman Ed Cox, a Manhattan lawyer and son-in-law to former President Richard Nixon, to spend some serious campaign money in the state."Ed was told, 'You have no money for a campaign here, so why should we spend any?' " a nationally known Republican operative told The Post.
"The McCain people think of Ed as a nice guy, but there's no money for an organization in New York, so they ask, 'Why go in?' " the GOP operative continued.
The Republican operative, meanwhile, sounded downright gleeful about the political fallout from US Rep. Charles Rangel's failure to pay income taxes from the rental of his luxurious villa in the Dominican Republic.
"Rangel has turned into a big liability for the Democrats, and his troubles are playing into the 'anti- politician' mood around the country," he said.
I guess I should reiterate they're talking serious money, so I'll assume they're spending some cash, but likely not much.

But does anyone seriously think Obama is got the stones to escalate the war in Afghanistan? This is the guy who said he wanted to get rid of all our nukes, and severely curtail military development and spending.
Like everything else Obama says its empty rhetoric. He's pushing the Afghanistan theater now because we're not clearly winning there, and its a way to focus attention away from the war we ARE winning (that he was against all along).
More important, no matter WHAT the rhetoric, does anyone REALLY think that Obama would prosecute a war in Afghanistan (or anywhere else on the planet, for that matter), better than Naval academy grad/ fighter pilot John McCain would?

Regarding your residency in Newark...
In my old synagogue, the most dyed in the wool liberals were the people who lived in the whitest sections of the neighborhood. People from these areas told me that they wouldn't dare shop in broad daylight on the street I lived on for fear of the "rougher element."
It was a forceful education in the fact that people who adhere to "liberal" views live in a self-imposed bubble, and that their reality is in fact a fantasyland.

Beach erosion. Looks like they're going to have to move the village soon. If the old guy that told me the story was correct, the move won't be for the first time. Naturally that wasn't mentioned. I was told that the settlement used to be at the north end of the island. It's not more that 50 or so yards wide up there now.
It was moved south years and years ago because of ..... beach erosion.

OT:
Obama's treacherous negotiations with the Iraqi government will have to be examined by the Mainstream Media, now that the McCain campaign has publicly questioned The One's shady antics in Baghdad:
At this point, it is not yet clear what official American negotiations Senator Obama tried to undermine with Iraqi leaders, but the possibility of such actions is unprecedented. It should be concerning to all that he reportedly urged that the democratically-elected Iraqi government listen to him rather than the US administration in power. If news reports are accurate, this is an egregious act of political interference by a presidential candidate seeking political advantage overseas. Senator Obama needs to reveal what he said to Iraq's Foreign Minister during their closed door meeting. The charge that he sought to delay the withdrawal of Americans from Iraq raises serious questions about Senator Obama's judgment and it demands an explanation.

I'm looking for a VP - I announced my candidacy here a few days ago. Some other lizards did as well. We all appear to be very, very qualified as we noted we had done some community organizing. Someone here even made money with a community garage sale.
Need to go meet some heads of state - hey, I shock hands with W, does that count? I also shook hands with Bill Clinton, but I would prefer we keep that under wraps.

Ohio has a "golden week" - Sept 30 to Oct 6 - in which you can REGISTER AND VOTE all in the same day.
[Link: www.dailykos.com...]
That means no 8 hour lines, no finding out you aren't registered and being stuck, no phony provisional ballots, etc. This is our chance to really GOTV before the other side goes into full gear with their SOTV campaigns (suppress out the vote).
But... we need help. Whatever you can give...people, cars, money, all of the above. And if you can't do any of those things, rec this diary and forward the message on. Details below.
There is a Democratic PUSH to use this opportunity and similar ones to sign up people and have them vote for Obama on the spot.
You know what to do. Go Ohio.

Time
(Mason, Waters, Wright, Gilmour) 7:06
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.
R.I.P. Richard (aka Rick) Wright, Pink Floyd keyboardist.

Hubby had rotator cuff surgery last month, which ended up just being the impingment type--open him up, make sure everything is open and clear, no real tendon or ligament work done. But that meant he couldn't throw the son around for toileting, baths, etc. So I had to take time off from work and do that plus get some help in to make sure I didn't collapse. He's doing great now; still doing therapy to get his muscles back up to speed.
We finally figured out some of my health issues and things are better than they were. I go in next week to see if the doctor agrees with me (heh), but I see good signs.
Work is crazy since I've been away. I'm getting back in to the office close to 30 hours a week now, and my to do list is starting to approach four feet. In 8 point type.

Remember how I keep telling you guys my in-laws are Dem/Lib whackos in Vermont? Well this morning I wake up to this gem in my email box from my FIL:
*I THINK I UNDERSTAND THIS ELECTION A LITTLE BETTER NOW*
I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....
If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're
"exotic, different." Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim. Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable. Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.
If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.
If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian. If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a true Christian.
If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society. If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.
If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's. If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one
DWI conviction, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
OK, much clearer now.

Is that what it is? I thought they were clearly demonstrating their inability to think outside the box and, you know, do some of it themselves. Silly me.

Yo Obama, ya'll just got served.. It's on!
If this is true, it is the clearest violation of the Logan Act since the Logan Act was passed. Not to mention how bad it makes you look when you are trying to extend troops in Iraq in private while saying the exact opposite in public. but then again Obama is a politician, despite what he claims.

It's telling that BO and Plugs are now energized and have left off the Palin hits. And what has energized them?
The failure of Lehman Bros, potential failure in other institutions, and a 500 point drop in the stock market.
They're jazzed because they can try and tie it into Bush/McCain, even though millions of people could be financially harmed by it.
How was McCain energized, just two short weeks ago? By choosing a running mate who connects to every day Americans, and who vows to reform Washington and to also focus on energy independence. All Americans would be helped by the achievement of these goals.
Shows a sure gap in the "Who Loves America?" question.

I hope McCain take this to the wall. Media has been slack on Obama for way to long. Perhaps Charles can make this item a thread? (hint, hint)
Its a good story, but I suspect it won't have legs. Obama has essentially flatly denied it, taking a swipe at McCain's veracity to boot.
Here is a more balanced report, including Obama's response to the article by Taheri:
[Link: www.politico.com...]
"This article bears as much resemblance to the truth as a McCain campaign commercial. Barack Obama has consistently called for any Strategic Framework Agreement to be submitted to the U.S. Congress so that the American people have the same opportunity for review as the Iraqi Parliament," said Obama spokeswoman Wendy Morigi. "Unlike John McCain, he supports a clear timetable to redeploy our troops that has the support of the Iraqi government. Barack Obama has never urged a delay in negotiations, nor has he urged a delay in immediately beginning a responsible drawdown of our combat brigades."
While the story rings true, short of audiotapes of the meeting, this ultimately comes down to who you want to believe.

If this story is false (and again, it appears difficult to sort out the truth here) Taheri may not be responsible for the error.
Its possible in speaking with Taheri the Iraqi foreign minister may have shaded things for political reasons (internal, or external).
Its possible Taheri slanted his remarks, and its also possible (though pretty unlikely) that there was a legitimate misunderstanding.
But if you ask me if this report seems plausible. . .I think it does.

But with respect to the impact of this story (not its veracity) it comes down to who is perceived as more of a "thug", the Iraqi foreign minister, or Obama.
Obama has already claimed the story is false. So where does it go from here?
Plus, Charles raises a good point about the author Taheri's credibility. Taheri has a less than perfect reputation that way, and even if the story is true, his participation casts some doubt over it.

Because...back before it went all P.C. it was one of the funniest and best shows ever...
Trapper and Hawkeye...classic duo.
My fave M*A*S*H* episode:
"Captain Tuttle"
The plot is that the guys are stealing supplies to give to a nun who runs an orphanage. Of course they don't tell the nun they're stealing, but explain that her benefactor is one of the camp's finest officers, a "Captain Tuttle." Word about Capt. Tuttle gets out, and everyone is curious about him. Trapper and Hawkeye keep building him up into this selfless, heroic, incredibly handsome, saint-like figure. People start to feel like they know him even though they've never seen him. Finally a decision is made to give an award to Captain Tuttle. The whole camp turns out, only to have Hawkeye appear holding a parachute.
SPOILER
Hawkeye announces that Captain Tuttle was choppered to the front to do some field surgery and jumped ... without his parachute. "Good luck, doctor, in that great waiting room in the sky," he eulogizes, saluting. Col. Blake chimes in, "He was the best damn O.D. we ever had!"
The episode where General MacArthur is supposed to visit the camp is great too: After all the preparation, with Radar standing in as MacArthur and Hawkeye and Trapper constantly sabotaging things, MacArthur suddenly arrives ahead of schedule ... only his jeep speeds right through the camp, and he barely looks up until he sees Corporal Klinger standing by the road, dressed like the Statue of Liberty and holding a torch shooting sparks. He rises halfway up in the still moving jeep and salutes.

And of course Jane Fonda is the poster child of Hollywood anti-war celebs. If they all died in DUI accidents tonight the country would be far better off.

And a photograph which seeks to resemble paintings which ape photography is the sort of self-fellation which has rendered the art world the irrelevancy it is today.
Now THAT would be an art form.

re: #329 ploome hineni
who benefits from this story?
why would an IRAQI go out of his way to discreditObama?
unless he thinks Obama is a dangerous liar
Multiple people may potentially benefit from the story: Taheri, the Iraqi foreign minister, McCain, etc, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're all "in" on it, or speak to its veracity.
Why would the IFM try to discredit Obama? Maybe he's angry at how the Iraqi Prime Minister sucked up to Obama at his visit (so there could be internal political reasons). Maybe, as you say, he simply believes that McCain would be better for Iraq (or for other reasons).
But again, none of these motivations necessarily point to the veracity of the story.
The next question is "why now"? The meeting in question isn't that recent, so why is this story emerging now? (I'll posit the timing to intent by its author, Taheri).
And lastly, whether the story is true or not, and even if it "goes away" in the American press, it doesn't just "go away". If Obama loses the election, he's still a sitting US Senator. If Obama wins, now he's essentially called the Iraqi Foreign minister a liar. That alone could potentially have serious ramifications to future US/Iraqi relations under an Obama administration.

If I were that artistic, I'd never leave my home.

These are photographs which are distorted by the photographer so as to look like paintings - not paintings at all. They are the opposite of Hyper Realism.
Hyper Realism is a form of painting or sculpture. Norman Rockwell's paintings approach photographic realism, and are wonderful. The naturalist painter Robert Bateman is another wonderful hyper realist.
