Tech Note: Referrer Domain Counting

Science | Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 7:01:14 pm PDT

The Most Recent Referrers page now shows the number of referrals from each domain in the past 24 hours, in a column labeled “Count.”

The code tries to identify subdomains like ‘hughhewitt.townhall.com’ or ‘environmentalrepublican.blogspot.com’ or ‘pajamasmedia.com/instapundit’ and count them separately, but it ain’t perfect. Lots of exceptions to catch.

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

Cool! I love stats. I was fascinated with "referrers" when I first signed up for LGF.

Sortable columns would be neat. Is that doable? Not that you HAVE to do that.....

Some head-spinning spin at one of those referrers:

Nuclear Disarmament

Conservative blogs such as Little Green Footballs are attacking Obama saying, “Barack Obama has a plan to get rid of all the nuclear weapons in the world,” referring to this article.

Nuclear disarmament sure sounds radical. One such radical who previously occupied the White House and sounded like this was Ronald Reagan, as even John McCain realizes. We are seeing sime similarities between Obama and Ronald Reagan on foreign policy–yet again. Sure, it might never be accomplished, but it is a worthwhile goal. On this issue I’ll take the side against the conservative bloggers, along with Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, and John McCain. George Bush is also on the other side, but it might have something to do with his difficulties in saying the word.

(I primarily like showing such comparisions between Obama and Reagan in the hopes it causes the heads of a few conservatives to explode. If it also causes the heads of some Clintonistas to explode, that’s fine too.)

17 Ward Cleaver  Tue, Sep 16, 2008 7:12:28pm

Charles, I'm sure it's a minor oversight, but when I click the link to the referrers page, I'm navigated off of this page. Most of your links open a new tab.

I'm noticing that Charles's "statistics" have been running higher... it seems like they are usually over 130k lately rather than the old days of 90-100k. And there are often more than 3k online rather than the old 2-2.4k. As the election approaches, I would expect those numbers to increase. LGF is pretty big. The curious and those who know that this is the place to go for what is relevant will begin to check in on a daily basis.

Drudge rocked a Presidency with a blue dress.

Charles rocked an election with a throbbing memo.

Democrats accuse locals of being racist toward Obama

YOUNGSTOWN — With the Republican presidential and vice presidential nominees in the Mahoning Valley today for a rally, two local Democratic state legislators said they believe a main reason polls show a tight race is because of racist voters.

“Race — that’s the only reason people in the Valley won’t vote for him,” said state Rep. Thomas Letson of Warren, D-64th, about Barack Obama, his party’s presidential nominee. “There are 1,000 reasons to vote for Obama and one reason why you won’t — race.”

Sebelius: 'Code language' hindering Obama campaign

Asked at a brown-bag lunch at the local library why the campaign is neck-and-neck, Sebelius said "code language" raising doubts about Obama is invalid because his life experience "has a lot more to do with me and my family."

"I think that the notion that, 'By the way, have any of you noticed that Barack Obama is part African American?' I think that is for a number of people difficult," Sebelius said. "I think we need to talk about the fact that that is a real issue."

I usually right-click all links. That brings up a little menu, and I choose "New tab" from the list. It is awkward at first, but it quickly become second nature.

I think you can also make your browser open all links in new tabs by default. The setting would probably be in "about:config", but that may only work for Firefox.

Interesting. Was just over on a torrent finder (was looking for a reference, not a download) and found that the DNC has a header up there urging people to register to vote for 0 and other "agents of change". A site that encourages illegal behavior running a DNC-sponsored ad...that just goes together like milk and cookies or chocolate and peanut butter, now don't it? Crooks got to be hanging together... 0 be getting desperate, calling out to the thugs...

(There is probably a vague racial overtone to those complementary items, but ask me if I give a flying f*ck at a rolling donut... I don't...)

(Truth be told, now there is a "You have just won a $1000 Wal-Mart gift card" header, so the DNC may be innocent (chuckle...snort..."innocent"...hahahhhahhahhahh a!)...no, really!)

Charles has that coded in the HTML – it's that target="_blank" attribute you see in the new comments box whenever you link something or reply to someone. He's making life much easier for us.

On some of those sites, there's probably a directive in the link that specifies "target=self", which forces the issue.
Otherwise, the browser should follow the tab default behavior property.

So, lets see. Referrals. Does this mean that the referrer has to have the URL for LGF on their site? What about someone who simply mentions LGF in passing -- that's not a referral, right?

So what Charles is measuring is the number of people who were reading site X who went directly to LGF?

Just wondering.

On some of those sites, there's probably a directive in the link that specifies "target=self", which forces the issue.
Otherwise, the browser should follow the tab default behavior property.

Use the "View Page Source", find the link, and check it out.

Why would some sites do that? You'd think they'd want to keep you on their page, not send you away.

This is disturbing to me:

The rumours, disinformation and hoaxes that prosper online should be ghettoised by a new website credibility labelling scheme, according to Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Good evening folks.

AIG gets Fed rescue in form of $85 billion loan

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. government on Tuesday seized control of American International Group with an $85 billion bailout aimed at averting a potentially catastrophic bankruptcy,.
The move comes just two days after the government refused to save Wall Street icon Lehman Brothers from a similar fate, immediately raising perplexing questions over the standards that the Bush Administration and the Federal Reserve are using in deciding which companies get help and which don't.
AIG had been on the brink of bankruptcy as a private market solution to the nation's largest insurer's problem failed to materialize. And the markets don't seem convinced that this loan will be the answer to all the firm's problems.
The Fed said that the negative economic fallout from AIG's failure was too great a risk.
"A disorderly failure of AIG could add to already significant levels of financial market fragility," the Fed said in a prepared statement. Interest rates would likely have risen, lowering consumer buying power and weakening the economy.

A default of AIG would have been catastrophic to the markets, no "maybe so" about it. Hundreds of billions of bond issues around the world, a lot of it local school districts and park districts and such in the US, would have potentially been in default if AIG had gone belly up and not been able to provide the required insurance back up for the issues. Those bond holders are people like you and me, our pension funds, and our money market fund accounts and so forth. It's not just fat cats on Wall Street that stood to lose and lose big.

Look for the market to rebound tomorrow. The Asian markets are already jumping. I'm glad that the Fed's did not cut the discount rate today, I'm also glad that they stepped in and provided this loan to AIG (and took a 79% equity ownership position)

I have criticized Fed Chairman Bernanke in the past. But I must say that he is handling this situation now about as well as is possible.

Anyway, Rush is simultaneously repulsive and fascinating. He's right on so many issues but his style of speech and incredible ego almost obscure his message. Ditto for the guy on Fox News.
I can barely watch Fox without cringing.

I'm on the edge of the boonies but it sounds like we get the same radio options.

Rush's on air ego is part of the shtick. He does it intentionally to rub liberals in particular the wrong way. If you listen long enough, you find a lot the ego is backhand humor on himself for the way liberals view him.

re: #16 Ward Cleaver

"Conservative blogs such as Little Green Footballs are attacking Obama saying, 'Barack Obama has a plan to get rid of all the nuclear weapons in the world,' referring to this article."

Actually, that is not the correct article (if you follow the link). LGF (in reality) linked to a video posted on YouTube and to an article in "Investors Business Daily". Obama was speaking to a lobbying group called "Caucus for Priorities", and Obama went on a rant against the United States military. The Investors Business Daily author wrote: "In a 132-word videotaped pledge (still viewable on YouTube), Obama agreed to hollow out the U.S. military by slashing both conventional and nuclear weapons." then LGF provided the link to the YouTube video. I hardly think that such "promises" of Obama's are reminiscent of Ronald Reagan. (Link June 7, 2008 LGF article here).

As Ward notes, it's more spinning to suggest that Obama is somehow "conservative." heh -- Obama is a radical Leftist.

My comparison was with respect to it being a loan, and what Lee did for Chrysler.

Would you think that is a relative example?

To some extent, yes. But Chrysler was a grain of sand on the beach compared to the size of the problem involved in this situation. You are talking potentially trillions of dollars of defaulted deals that would have happened if AIG went under. Not billions, trillions. You just can not have that.

I think the regulations will need to be changed. I think that the way in which loans are made and "securitized" (repackaged into secutities and resold) will have to be significantly changed and controlled in the future. Risk needs to be more clearly defined and clarified. Most people just do not understand the risks involved in these deals, and when that happens you have a potential for disaster.

We now have a decent chance to get through this without widespread bankruptcies of smaller banks and such. The next few weeks will be very crucial.

Ping,

I started driving my son to work at 10am and for the first time in my life, I heard Rush Limbaugh. When I pick him up in the afternoon, on the same channel, is ... oh, I forgot his name, the Congressman who was defeated here in Arizona -- Hayworth?

Anyway, Rush is simultaneously repulsive and fascinating. He's right on so many issues but his style of speech and incredible ego almost obscure his message. Ditto for the guy on Fox News.
I can barely watch Fox without cringing.

I'm on the edge of the boonies but it sounds like we get the same radio options.

herm -

Understand something, "El Rushbo" - apart from being a Political commentator - is an ENTERTAINER. By 12:06 PM Eastern, when he comes on - on WABC, he and I have read the same "show prep." AND being an ex-radio guy - As in TALK RADIO - on the FM Band - in the early 1970's - I listen IN AWE. He is what I WANTED to be back then - The Most Influential Radio Political commentator in the USA. We are nearly the same exact age, I still have more hair and a noticeably slimmer physique - AND - sorry Rush - a Better RADIO VOICE. So what - who cares? You were the man at the right juncture - and taught a lot of people that they were being fed a bunch of CRAP - CRAP that I accepted as "Gospel" 'til the early-mid 1990's. Thank you sir for your insights - as CONGRESS - backhandedly - in your honor - Named a US Post Office after your Grandfather - One of the FEW things that Congress has actually accomplished this year. Quite a C/V if I do say so myself.

The Red Cross had a fund raising drive so it could build the infrastructure and have the resources to respond to the next big disaster that came along, as well as provide for the incredible costs of responding to the people effected by 9-11. This was a few weeks after the attack when everyone was being wonderful, it was a golden moment in America. O'Reilly started a campaign to destroy the Red Cross because every dime wasn't being handed directly to "the victims." He then went after lefty celebrities, especially George Clooney, who were help Red Cross fundraising. Much of the bitter animosity that engulfed the US since then can be traced IMHO to the gasoline that O'Reilly decided to pour out.

Excellent article, especially the observation "they won’t let the facts get in the way of a good political narrative."

(one slight quibble, though. the writer states: "Surely he doesn’t really believe our presence in Iraq to be 'illegal'? No, he just doesn’t understand existing strategic agreements." hmmm...I am not entirely sure that Obama believes our presence in Iraq is legal -- in fact, Obama has repeatedly made statements that one of the first things he intends to do (once elected) is to investigate "war crimes" (and, no Obama doesn't mean he's going after al-qaeda -- he intends to go after and prosecute Americans as "war criminals." that's what Obama has suggested.)

The problem with O-Reilly is he thinks he is very smart, when he is blatant and banal. Can't watch him. I like the body language girl with the glasses though.

Well, OReilly did for cable news what Rush did for radio -- made it a place where conservatives and libertarians could go without being targeted or maligned. Thus, I'll watch Fox on those rare occasions I watch tv. Similarly, I've just started listening to radio and am trying to stomach Rush.

Yes, these guys are an acquired taste. I guess. I'll take your word that they're nice in person, but honestly, if I met such loud-mouthed, bombastic, ego-consumed men, I'd walk away in disgust.

And
re: #348 lifeofthemind
Hmm, you're two posts are somewhat dissimilar, though newsjunkie_ky was talking about Katrina and lifeofthemind was talking about 9/11, but I will say that if lifeofthemind is correct about 9/11, they shoulda kicked O'Reilly off the air.
I was on the Board of Directors of The American Red Cross of Greater New York (yeah, that whole wordy thing is the name for the Manhattan based chapter of the Red Cross) for two years before I quit.
The Red Cross does do somethings really, really well. But frankly both 9/11 and Katrina were too big for the Red Cross to deal with. Red Cross is, or was when I was on the board, entirely funded by the United Way and individual donations. United Way was getting low on funds cause of some much publicized bad things and so kept cutting TRCOGNY budget and forcing us to cancel program after program. And they are, Lord knows, bureaucratic to the nth degree. But a lot of Red Cross's problems come from lack of steady and LARGE funding of their programs.
I personally guaranteed that if the RC broke it's deal with United Way to never go after Corporate America for charitable donations, so that I COULD go after corporate America for donations to the Red Cross, that we'd make at least twice as much dough.
The RC refused and so I quit the board.
I also agree that the Salvation Army seems at least to be better funded and is much less bureaucratic.

O'Reilly, I basically never listen to nor watch.

Hannity is another case study, skills very complementary to Rush, you listen to the Hannity show for the guests, not the callers, and not especially Sean. You listen to Rush for Rush about 80%, the callers about 10%, Paul Shanklin stuff and the occassional interview, when he does one.

Just in terms of communications, it's all quite interesting. The real question is just how much influence Rush really has, I've debated that with various people, Washington insiders seem to both hate him and try to write him off. Well, he sells a lot of product, that much is clear!

NEW YORK - Second in the broadcast network competition to talk to Sarah Palin: Katie Couric.

The CBS anchor will spend two days on the road with the Republican vice presidential candidate as well as presidential hopeful John McCain, the network said Tuesday.

Couric's interview material will be aired Sept. 29 and 30 on the "CBS Evening News" and "The Early Show."

It's timed for just before the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate between Palin and Democrat Joe Biden.

ABC's Charles Gibson had the first in-depth network interview with Palin last week. She's also talking to Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity this week.

re: #395 neocon hippie

Here is part of a letter that McCain sent to Obama after he felt Obama lied to him:

snip:

I would like to apologize to you for assuming that your private assurances to me regarding your desire to cooperate in our efforts to negotiate bipartisan lobbying reform legislation were sincere. When you approached me and insisted that despite your leadership’s preference to use the issue to gain a political advantage in the 2006 elections, you were personally committed to achieving a result that would reflect credit on the entire Senate and offer the country a better example of political leadership, I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable. Thank you for disabusing me of such notions with your letter to me dated February 2, 2006, which explained your decision to withdraw from our bipartisan discussions. I’m embarrassed to admit that after all these years in politics I failed to interpret your previous assurances as typical rhetorical gloss routinely used in politics to make self-interested partisan posturing appear more noble. Again, sorry for the confusion, but please be assured I won’t make the same mistake again

Hm, another one that I don't know if it's been posted yet:

Obama picks up about $9 million in Hollywood

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Barack Obama partied with Hollywood celebrities Tuesday night and with the help of Oscar-winning singer and actress Barbra Streisand raised an eye-popping $9 million for his presidential campaign and the Democratic Party.

The night was split into two glitzy events, a reception and dinner costing $28,500 each at the Greystone Mansion, followed by entertainment by Streisand at the nearby Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. About 250 people were expected at the dinner and about 800 at the entertainment, which cost $2,500 a ticket.

It was a day of contrasts for Obama. Earlier in the day, the Democratic presidential candidate spoke about the public's deepening economic anxieties and portrayed Republican challenger John McCain as out of touch with the needs of hardworking people.

Then he flew to California for a night of hobnobbing with Hollywood notables.

McCain groused about Obama mixing it up with celebrities. He told a rally in Vienna, Ohio on Tuesday that Obama "talks about siding with the people, siding with the people just before he flies off to Hollywood for a fundraiser with Barbra Streisand and his celebrity friends. Let me tell you my friends, there's no place I'd rather be than here with the working men and women of Ohio."

Sharmuta had earlier posted a link to this at the Politico

In July, Obama spent $57 million — more than any prior month and more than the $51 million he collected that month. A large chunk of that cash went to the salaries of his expanding field operation.

His expenses for August were a bit higher because of the extensive advertising he aired that month — including a run of commercials during NBC’s broadcast of the Beijing Olympics.

They are spending it like there is no tomorrow.

Real:
He had 66 Million left at the end of July
He had 77 million left at the end of August after pulling in 66 million in August.
That means he had to have spent about 55 million in August!
That is a burn rate of about 80%!
He CANNOT keep that up.

Meanwhile McCain and the RNC will have about 300 million to spend in two months.
Obama would have to raise 100 million in Sept and Oct in order to keep pace.
He will not and cannot do that.

His fundraising is also killing the down ticket Dems. People are donating to him and not the DNC.
If he would have taken the public financing then the DNC would be raking it in and that would help elect more Dems to Congress.

She did two rallies for Obama in Ohio this past weekend.

Interesting.

I wonder why she pulled out of the Iranian rally, even though Palin has not firmly committed to attend?

Clinton aides were furious. They first learned of the plan to have both Clinton and Palin appear when informed by reporters.

"Her attendance was news to us, and this was never billed to us as a partisan political event," said Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines. "Sen. Clinton will therefore not be attending."

A McCain-Palin campaign official, speaking on condition of anonymity because Palin's schedule for Monday has not been announced, said only that Palin tentatively planned to attend the rally.

Yep, from your link: Hillary was talking to "1,650 supporters in an Akron high school gymnasium"
and "At a rally in Elyria earlier Sunday, Clinton delivered the same line, receiving the same enthusiastic response from a crowd of 1,200 — many wearing "Hillary for President" T-shirts leftover from her bitter primary fight with Obama."
I suppose every little bit helps, but I kinda think Obama needs Hillary to get out in front of more than 2,800 people in Ohio (to say nothing of getting them to get rid of their Hillary T-Shirts!).

481 Typicalwhitey  Tue, Sep 16, 2008 9:58:58pm
Last week, Joe Biden delivered the following insightful, thought-provoking remarks to an energized and enthusiastic crowd in West Palm Beach, Florida. As quoted by the Washington Post, the would-be Vice President said:

"If Barack Obama grew up in my neighborhood in Scranton or Claymont or Wilmington, Delaware, he would have been the guy who had my back. If you're looking for a very sophisticated Harvard graduate who went to Columbia undergrad and was president of the Law Review, he's totally intellectual. Baby, you ain't seen nothing yet. This guy is steel."

Can someone translate this into English or explain to me what Senator Biden means?

I'd like to hope it's that middle class voters have started to recognize what Obama's tax increases will do in an already damaged economy - and that if he does as he says he will (you can never be sure with him) he's gonna let the Bush Tax Cuts lapse, which means everyone making, iirc, over $45,000 a year will be paying more taxes each year. Or that he's acted more like a "Superstar" than the person representing the best hope for the Common Man.
But who knows?

Illustrating previous comment, the political ads for the Colorado congressional races are all over the airwaves right now. When you add the Obama and McCain ads, there is more money being spent on political ads by the parties than all other advertising combined.

The congressional ads being aired are running at least three to one GOP over the dems, which is illustrative of the lack of depth their campaign coffers have right now.

I think those are pretty good-siAzed audiences for a person who isn't running. As for the T-shirts, I think the Obama team is more interesed in who they vote for than what they wear!

But then it wouldn't be all about the "O" then would it?

LOL

You seem to be repeating yourself!

At his burn rate he can't afford to share. Plus he opted out of public funds which means he has to fund raise, that takes money. McCain doesn't.

I think it means that Biden doesn't know what the expression "has my back" means.
I can think of a lot of folks I'd like to "have my back in some "rough" parts of town, but NONE of them are Columbia or Harvard grads, that's for sure.
Unless, of course, Biden meant that metaphorically and really meant that Obama is so smart, he'll cover Biden's intellectual dishonesty.
But if Obama's "really steel" I hope for his sake he starts to show it soon - I mean this race is AWFULLY CLOSE at this point for a guy running against Bush and who has had the MSM in the tank for him since the beginning of the primary season.
But basically, I think it was just Biden trying to sound like a tough guy.

Hardly. If it was desperation city, they'd be hoarding their cash for the last stages of the campaign. They are flush with funds right now, Obama isn't. Most people don't realize that anyone in the state of Colorado can mail ballots well ahead of election day, and centralized in-person polling begins a couple of weeks before the actual election date, when voting is only at the precincts, or drop-off of unmailed ballots at the election HQ.

The party war chest has more funds than McCain's. That's why in the key states the ads are running non-stop all day.

Don't forget that for a long time McCain was the shoe-in candidate while Obama was scrambling to knock HRC out of the race.

They asked to speak to the adult with the closest birth date (Lie #1, I chose mine, wife's is closest )

They asked me if I was a registered voter (Y), if I was a Democrat, Independent or Republican told her Independent, we are registered Independents, we switched in 2006 from the GOP as a protest.

She asked me if the election was held today who would I vote for - (BIG Lie #2) told her Obama. She asked a dozen or more questions, like race, age, who I voted for in 2004 (Bush) Did Biden hurt or help (OK lie #3 i said help) Palin hurt or help- nope told the truth on this one, big time help So when you see the polls come out for Ohio, just think of little 'ole liar me and that the numbers are higher

I certainly agree that she has had a dramatic effect on the race. It will be interesting to see whether it holds up for the next six weeks. There's some evidence that the early positive reactions are falling off, but it's really too soon to tell.

But then a funny thing happened: Palin seems to have lost some of her luster. Since Sept. 13, Palin's unfavorables have climbed from 30 percent to 36 percent. Meanwhile, her favorables have slipped from 52 percent to 48 percent. That's a three-day net swing of -10 points, and it leaves her in the Sept. 15 Diageo/Hotline tracking poll tied for the smallest favorability split (+12)** of any of the Final Four. Over the course of a single weekend, in other words, Palin went from being the most popular White House hopeful to the least. But then a funny thing happened: Palin seems to have lost some of her luster. How many Romney supporters are making big scenes out of switching sides and supporting the other team?

Romney did not come out of the primaries with a faction large enough or full of enough piss and vinegar to upset the convention if they so chose.

Hillery had that. Hillery had earned a place at the decision making table in a way that Romeny and no other Republican had with McCain. Romney lost the primary by a country mile. McCain won the whole game. Obama won with damage.

Obama could have done more I think with Hillery. I don't think he had either the smarts or the druthers.

The PUMA phenomenon is significant. If Obama can't diffuse it, it will have the potential to split the Dem party in half before the election.

Puma is different from the few people reporters find. The DNC convention had a strong negative relationship with the puma people. You can see it on Youtube. It represents the DNC trying to disenfranchise women voters, and Sen. Obama trying to subvert caucus counts as he did in his first election.

Not a pretty trend by Sen. Obama. The working figure is 18 million voters. It's estimated that 10-30 percent of them could switch to a GOP, GREEN, or Libertarian vote.

The obamabots are downright condescending and nasty in Hilary forums like the kostards they are. Very Misogynistic. They are worried about something?

Most investors know the market is moving into Triple witching where the options, index options, and index options on futures expire (plus single stock futures expire).

Some derivative positions must be closed out starting on Wednesday and going until Friday of this Week.

See: Triple witching hour

If there were a time for a Foreign entity to Wreak Havoc on USA markets Now would be the Time. The leverage employed in the options and futures markets is tremendous.

It’s just a hunch but, I think someone or some entity, is panicking the US market for profit.
