How dreary — to be — Somebody!
How public — like a Frog —
To tell one’s name — the livelong June —
To an admiring Bog!

The three problems, according to campaign sources: The report was true, there were at least three other people in the room with Obama and Zebari to confirm the conversation, and there was concern that there were enough aggressive reporters based in Baghdad with the sources to confirm the conversation that to deny the comments would create a bigger problem.

Gigging, not to be confused with jigging, is an American South and Midwest practice of hunting flounder or frogs with a gig, or three pronged spear. The gig is a long (typically 8 to 14 foot) pole which has been tipped with a spear, usually with three barbed tines like a trident. Four-tined spears are also used.

Frog gigging is often done with a four-tined spear. Four-tined spears are quite good for frog gigging, as they are normally heavier and less likely to break, and also wider, giving the frog hunter more room for error when thrusting the spear-tipped gig through the frog.
Flashlights are usually used to locate the frogs by the reflection of light from their eyes. This technique seems to stun or daze the frogs, and it definitely makes it less likely for the frog to see an approaching hunter, or the incoming gig itself. A fishing license is required in some jurisdictions.[1] and frog gigging regulations are usually found in each state's hunting and fishing regulations.
Although capturing frogs with a net or clasp pole may be referred to as frog gigging by some, this is incorrect, as a gig is not being used. Handling frogs with the objective of releasing them may harm the creature because chemicals can easily be absorbed through their skin.
Frog legs are often cooked deep fried or sautéed.[2] The hind legs can contain as much meat as the legs of a medium-sized chicken. Traditionally they are breaded with a mixture of egg and bread or cracker crumbs. Frog legs, often imported from the Orient, are available at many restaurants or stores, particularly in the Southern United States.
The country music duo Big & Rich mentioned frog gigging in their song "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)". The band Alabama sang about it in Red River.
One of the most popular Texas A&M yells is "Gig 'em, Aggies!" and was created in preparation for a football game against the TCU Horned Frogs.

re: #30 hermeneutics

I'm reading something on flounder "gigging" now. Sounds interesting. Here's his text ...

When I gig from a boat, I use lighting that may be foreign to many of you. I have modified a metal car top carrier bar and fitted it with four sealed beam headlamps, the same kind we use on an automobile. They are mounted so they point straight up if the bar were mounted across the roof of an auto. The connections have all been waterproofed, and the wiring to the lamps is of six gauge, insulated copper.

I take the headlamp arraignment and drop it over the bow with a line attached to each side. I then draw the bar so that it is about one quarter of the way back from the bow and strapped across the bottom of the boat. If you picture this properly, you know that the headlamps are now pointed at the sea bottom. Once securely strapped in place, I connect the wiring to one of the three auto batteries in the boat.

Bingo! The bottom directly under the boat is lit up like a ballpark. The angle of the light to the front of the boat allows any eyes that are protruding from the bottom to be seen as I stand on the bow of the boat.

Now, all it takes is someone helping you pole the boat, or run an electric trolling motor!

Here is my favorite poem BY Emily Dickinson

Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.

We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labour, and my leisure too,
For his civility.

We passed the school where children played,
Their lessons scarcely done;
We passed the fields of gazing grain,
We passed the setting sun.

We paused before a house that seemed
A swelling of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible,
The cornice but a mound.

Since then 'tis centuries; but each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses' heads
Were toward eternity.

Russia halts trading after 17% share price fall

By Catherine Belton and Charles Clover in Moscow and Rachel Morarjee in London

September 16 2008

Russian shares suffered their steepest one-day fall in more than a decade on Tuesday, losing up to 20 per cent, as a sharp slide in oil prices and difficult money market conditions triggered a rush to sell.

The heads of the Russian central bank, the finance ministry and the financial market regulator met on Tuesday night for an emergency discussion on ways to halt the crisis.

We used to think that they were lost when they showed up on our backyard and we captured them and took them down to our ponds for release. A neighbor (and very knowledgeable environmentalist) told us that they were grass frogs and needed to be in dry areas! Sorry, frogs! We know better now. (And you are really cool).

From the Spectator article...

Biden is notorious in the Senate for his long-winded questions and his inability to limit his comments to questions during interviews and floor debate, and Republicans and the McCain campaign have been banking that Biden's ego and frustration over the lack of attention focused on him will drive him to overcompensate during the debate.

"But we're not going to let that happen," says the Obama adviser. "When Joe wants to get in a zone, he can get in the zone and stay there. He really wants to be in the zone for this debate and he is working hard. I saw him work hard to prep on the Roberts and Alito confirmation hearings. He's working twice as hard on this, because the stakes and the rewards are so much higher."

The dems are gonna lose that debate. Know why?

Because they are prisoners of their own tunnel vision, and can't see the forest for the trees.

The new agency would have the authority, which now rests with Congress, to set one of the two capital-reserve requirements for the companies. re: #5 saltmarsh

Can't I just eat my tadpole...

I just want to eat my tadpole.

Tying the tadpole reference in with the earlier evolution thread, here's Julie Andrews singing ''When You Were a Tadpole and I Was a Fish'' to Kermit the Frog.

The song is loosely based on this long poem called "Evolution," originally written in 1895 by one Langdon Smith (1858-1908) and polished/lengthened over subsequent years. The first stanza is:

When you were a tadpole and I was a fish
In the Paleozoic time,
And side by side on the ebbing tide
We sprawled through the ooze and slime,
Or skittered with many a caudal flip
Through the depths of the Cambrian fen,
My heart was rife with the joy of life,
For I loved you even then.

(If you wanna get picky, neither amphibians nor true bony fish came along until a few hundred million years after the "Cambrian" period! But both groups were certainly around by the mid-Paleozoic.)

And after subsequent stanzas covering millions of years of evolution, it ends with the four lines:

Then as we linger at luncheon here
O’er many a dainty dish,
Let us drink anew to the time when you
Were a tadpole and I was a fish.

In one underclass meat market class I took, the prof gave the entire polysci semester over to the radical commie grad assistants.

The students would sit around in class with big newspapers in front of their faces, take their shoes off and put their feet on the chairs in front of them, and laugh and giggle all class long...

Also, do you have to have an account in Kozistan to vote in that poll?

Actually I have no idea who he is polling.
But you cannot vote in this poll, apparently he is calling people.
Here are his "demographics":

Men............ 516 (47%)
Women........ 584 (53%)
Democrats ....387 (35%)
Republicans... 284 (26%)
Independents .329 (30%)
Other/Refused .100 (9%)
White ............802 (73%)
Black .............145 (13%)
Latino ............140 (13%)
Other/Ref........ 13 (1%)
18-29 .............199 (18%)
30-44 .............360 (33%)
45-59 ..............302 (27%)
60+ .................239 (22%)
Northeast .........244 (22%)
South ...............316 (29%)
Midwest ............303 (28%)
West ...............237 (21%)

He also shows that women prefer Obama 53 to 41
That is simply not true.

WOW:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a prominent Hillary Clinton supporter and member of the Democratic National Committee’s Platform Committee, will endorse John McCain for president on Wednesday, her spokesman tells CNN.
The announcement will take place at a news conference on Capitol Hill, just blocks away from the DNC headquarters. Forester will “campaign and help him through the election,” the spokesman said of her plans to help the Republican presidential nominee.

Forester was a major donor for Clinton earning her the title as a Hillraiser for helping to raise at least $100,000 for the New York Democratic senator’s failed presidential bid.

In an interview with CNN this summer, Forester did not hide her distaste for eventual Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

“This is a hard decision for me personally because frankly I don't like him,” she said of Obama in an interview with CNN’s Joe Johns. “I feel like he is an elitist. I feel like he has not given me reason to trust him.”

I don't know.
She has been on fire lately at her stops.

Biden is a blowhard and I don't believe that type of guy can intimidate Palin.

I don't believe there IS a type of guy that can intimidate Palin. She certainly wasn't intimidated by any of the big-league politicians in her state, and she had to debate all of them.

I saw a clip of a three-way debate she was in with her primary opponents in the Gubernatorial race. The two men were at it hammer-and-tongs, and she interrupted them and said, "I think we owe it to the people of Alaska to have a higher level of discourse than this." It was the kind of moment that Moms dish out to squabbling children every day.

So when Biden starts any kind of schtick to intimidate or condescend to Palin, she'll skewer him like a fat pig and set him to roasting.

Their perceived mandate of the "overwhelming majority" of the people will be up in smoke. Their standing as statesmen in the legislative branch will be openly up for scrutiny. The party will fracture, but the base will still be there somewhere where the true middle was all along. Abandoned by the conservative branch and rejected by the radicals, a smaller core party will exist in a lesser form.

The non-violent left will try to have a voice outside the box again, and eventually will fall back into the coalition. It may be tougher to redeem credence with those who felt increasingly alienated as the party turned from nanny government to overt socialism.

It will take years if not decades for them to recover if a successful presidency breeds another. But I think that they are being taught valuable lessons about the resiliency of American patriotism and support for country at all cost. A reformed dem party will someday be back on top, but it won't be just around the corner.

That's if they don't win in November. I'm betting on that.

Personally I believe it is kos just propping up his minions on his website.
kos becomes irrelevant if McCain wins.

Totally disagree, there -- I think it'd be an Obama victory (не дай Бог!) that would completely take the wind out of kos's sails, since kos is all about reacting against the Rethuglikkkan Establishment.

re: #235 really grumpy big dog Johnson

They felt like they had an Overwhelming Majority mandate back in 2004 too, right up until they lost the election by 5 million votes. Seems like they have this false sense of security brought on by ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, and also sort of CBS. And NYT, Washington Post, blah blah. Not hard to see the reason for their arrogance. You think they'll snap out of it if they lose this year. I don't know, though.. I've seen Nancy Pelosi in all her snideness and I think they'll die before admitting they aren't loved by all.

I'll take that bet and raise you 10. I don't think they'll ever learn. They didn't learn from Gore's loss; they didn't learn from Kerry's loss. They continue to put up far left pols that the people don't want. The far left will keep control of the party because the middle of the road conservative democrats are too nice to take it away from them.

re: #234 stuiec

I heard that one reason Alaska's senior Republican senators were ticked at Sarah was that when she became Governor and attended a Legislative session, she got so ticked-off at what she saw, she told them, "It looks like you need some adult supervision around here."

It went over like a loud fart in church, but you get the point......

re: #215 Typicalwhitey

Fascinating: the Democrats split their party in two, and the winning faction's leader did nothing of any consequence to unify the party (other than strong-arm the leaders of the defeated faction, the Clintons, into making some public statements). He didn't help Hillary with her campaign debt, he didn't give her the VP slot, he did nothing to win over her supporters. And the anger he let fester spilled over into the PUMA phenomenon, of which this is the latest and most high-profile example.

Contrast and compare: the Republicans were split into at least three, between the McCainiacs, the Huckabites, and the Other Conservatives. The winning contender spoke well of the defeated factions, tried to win them over -- and in the end, chose a running mate that energized the defeated factions to support his candidacy. He didn't try to force party unity or create the illusion of party unity: he unified his party.

The Democrats are reaping the fruits of their own internal divisions. They're following the model of the Bolsheviks vs. the Mensheviks, except that the Bolsheviks had the luxury of using real bullets to persuade the Mensheviks to get with the Party program (or die).

254 neocon hippie  Wed, Sep 17, 2008 12:12:12am

I doubt that McCain will win NY but he may reduce the margin by enough there and other blue states to help with the popular vote total so it won't look too close.

Yeah, really. But not long after Sarah became Governor on an ethics platform, I was really tickled to see a big photo of a politician wearing handcuffs, right on the front page of the Anchorage Daily News. How often do you get to see that?

I'm not saying that Sarah was directly responsible, because I don't know the exact sequence of events, but a series of cleanup actions like that in conjunction with Gov. Palin at the helm, is why her approval rating here in Alaska has consistently been over 80% for almost 2 years now.

an Obama victory (не дай Бог!)

By the way, this Russian phrase, ne dai Bog, is pronounced approximately like the English phrase "knee die bog" -- with the strongest emphasis on the "bog," which means "male deity" or (when capitalized) "the Judeo-Christian God."

The ne dai part means "don't allow," so the whole thing is "Don't let it happen, God!" -- or more loosely, "Heaven forbid!" You can express the opposite just be dropping the negative element "knee" and just saying "die bog," which conveys "(may) God (be) willing."

Statistical theory says that the size of the sample doesn't have to relate to the size of the population, but that the larger the sample, the tighter the margin of error. A sample of 500 has something like a +/- 5 percent margin of error (or is it even greater?).

That's it, exactly. Obama's acting as though winning the nomination means that the Hillary supporters are obligated to swear fealty to him. McCain is acting as though winning the nomination immediately faced him with the challenge of winning over the supporters of the guys he beat. Truly, bullying vs. leading.

Maybe we'll find out.

I hope Sarah doesn't get much apprentice training from Dick Cheney, though. He's pretty creepy.

Read the book "VICE - Dick Cheney and the Hijacking of the American Presidency", by Lou Dubose and Jake Bernstein. Published by Random House. Quoting from page 178,

"Lawrence Wilkerson was Colin Powell's assistant for the four years Powell served as Secretary of State. In the Army and at State, Colonel Wilkerson has paid careful attention to bureaucratic structure and power. Watching the White House from the perspective of the State Department, and trying to cover his boss's back, Wilkerson figured out who was in charge.

It wasn't George Bush.

Within the largest vice presidential staff in the history of the office, Dick Cheney set up his own shadow National Security Council staff -- something no vice president had ever done before. In this unprecedented arrangement was another glaring peculiarity. The vice president's national security staffers read all the e-mail traffic "in, out and between" the president's NSC staffers, Wilkerson says. Yet the President's staff isn't allowed to read the communication of Cheney's staffers. "Members of the President's staff sometimes walk from office to office to avoid Cheney's people monitoring their discussions", says Wilkerson. "Or they use the phone."

Here's a related article describing DAVID ADDINGTON, DICK CHENEY'S SECRETIVE CHIEF OF STAFF.

Also take a look at THIS VIDEO of Dick Cheney giving a speech, and joking with David Rockefeller about being a Director of the Council on Foreign Relations, and keeping that fact from his constituents back home.

Creepy. It's safe to say that Sarah Palin indeed has her work cut out for her.

Any fans of the hit TV series "24" out there?

Re Paul Revere #49 who asked: Who checks fact check.org?

I recently stumbled on a web blog that I think is a great source of facts. It goes way beyond factcheck.org. This place (unlike factcheck) links to an abundance of primary source information. Usually, you just get links to news stories. Not at this place.

[Link: iusbvision.wordpress.com...]

They have more factual information on the left's "Palin scandals" than you could possibly hope to find in any one place. I was overwhelmed with information.

Here is "About Us"

IUSB Vision staff is made up of IU South Bend students and alumni who have a more traditional, libertarian, or conservative viewpoint as opposed to the ‘think progress’ Marxism, far leftism, or pick your favorite euphemism, that is often presented as academic truth by so many academics today. We write about what ever we find interesting.

We are also dedicated to educating those who point at anyone who is not a far left ideologue and screams “FASCIST”. Someone has to explain the values of free and fair markets, and liberty tempered by restraint and personal responsibility, because our universities are not getting the job done.

You wont find the most graceful use of rhetoric or even perfect grammar (after all we are publicly educated), but what you will find is some of the best news and analysis that can be found anywhere.

No, I don't work for them. I just think they are a great help in dealing with liberals who never have facts.

Good morning, littleoldlady!

I'm on a throttled Internet connection at work, and can't see youtube here.

I did see a great Canadian political ad on the TV when I was in town this evening. Video image of a lottery ticket, with the header that reads: "Dion's Scratch and Lose."

The silvery coating gets "scratched off" in an animation, and it reveals a videoclip of Liberal party leader Stephane Dion criticizing Conservative PM Stephen Harper for having had the temerity to lower the federal sales tax (aka GST) by 2%. Voiceover: "You lose! $1200 lost to the average family when Dion increases the GST."

Flash to another instance of the same ticket. The animated scratch-off reveals a videoclip of Stephane Dion plugging his carbon tax proposal. Again, the voiceover says, "You lose. The carbon tax will siphon thousands of dollars from the pockets of ordinary Canadians." Final voiceover: "Dion's Liberal party, a risk you cannot afford."

I'm sure I didn't get the wording exactly right, but that is the gist of it. Apparently there are a series of ads on the same theme, employing other gambling metaphors. I had quite a chuckle when I saw it, as I have always thought of those "scratch and win" lottery tickets as "scratch and lose" tickets, and I'm delighted to see them use the same terminology in their ad.

One of my co-workers was sitting with me in the pub when this ad came on TV, a guy who came to Canada from eastern Europe a couple of years ago. He turned to me and said, "They got that right." Believe it or not, we had never discussed politics. Too cool!

Sheesh, here comes "Shariah-compliant" securities.

[Washington Times]

The first clue that something is wrong with Wall Street's next big thing is that it is Shariah-compliant. The next clue is how Shariah-Compliant Finance works. Like subprime, it is a black box, in which management and investors alike are told to trust in the experts. In this case, the experts are Shariah authorities who are accorded exclusive responsibility for determining whether investments are "pure" (halal) and therefore acceptable, or "impure" (haram) and not.

As an important monograph on the subject recently issued by the McCormick Foundation and the Center for Security Policy (for copies contact the Center at [Link: www.SecureFreedom.org)...] makes clear, these authorities are, unsurprisingly, adherents to Shariah. A number of them explicitly embrace its call to jihad (including a former senior member of the Dow Jones Islamic Index, Sheik Taqi Usmani). This "holy war" is to be waged where possible through violent means, where necessary through "soft" means like Shariah-Compliant Finance. For this reason, such Islamists call SCF "financial jihad."

See: Shariah-Compliant Securities

Heh! Russian grammar, she is a tricky thing -- I understood what you meant, but the way you said it makes it sound like "I fucked you." And, as I'm sure you'd agree, no sensible person would fuck Obama with a 10-foot-long secondhand dick from Rent-A-Penis.

However, you simply can't go wrong wishing that voters will tell him vam pizdéts! (вам пиздeц).

Pizdéts is an abstract and not directly translatable obscenity derived from the Russian word for "c*nt" (which is pizdá), but it basically conveys "What a buttfuckingly horrendous turn of events this is!" And vam means "for you," so you can put 'em together for "Ha-ha, it must totally fucking suck to be you!"

On the other hand, nam with an "n" means "for us," so if Obama wins, you can say nam pizdets, implying "we are so deeply screwed" or "we're dead meat."

Okay, just in case anyone is put-off about the frog's legs discussion way up-thread here's the gospel truth from someone who partakes.

1. Yes, they're very good.
2. Taste like chicken? Maybe, just a little. Doesn't everything? They're white meat. They're good.
3. Jump or twitch in the pan? Jump? No. Twitch or move? Yes. If they're very fresh. If that grosses you out or you just don't want to put up with it, simply make a slice all the way to the bone right behind the knee. Cut the tendon. No more movement. The back of the leg muscle will bunch up, however.
4. The discussion of gigs as tools was exactly right. My favorite gig has a latex surgical tubing strap attached at the butt end. I can stretch the hose and close my hand on the gig's shaft. Then, point toward the target, release my grip and the gig is propelled by the stored energy in the tubing. It takes just a bit of practice, but less motion is needed during the hunt which means less chance for the bullfrog to see movement and escape.
5. In my state both a fishing and a hunting license is required.
6. I still don't understand that Texas Aggie, "Gig 'em" thing.
7. Try them, they're great.

Ahhh, fond memories of chasing bullfrogs on the shores of ponds and lakes.

Living outside Merced, California in the early '60s, my dad and I would wade in the slow-moving waters of a nearby creek, with a bright flashlight, a 3-meter gig (barbed frog-sticking trident) and a gunny sack, until we had 60-70 pounds, Blue...

Take them home, clean and skin them, and put away in our deep-freezer what couldn't be fried in butter and eaten that night... and considering that MOST of our frogs were in the 20-30 inch category with thick thighs bigger than chicken drumsticks and more tasty (clean, white meat) we were doing all right, and living off the largesse of the land!

When we built our new facility they put in a fitness area with a track, but for 20 years all they've had is crappy 4th-hand equipment, and not much of that either. Someone finally persuaded management to invest in some first class gear. There's like 12 pieces of brand new quality exercise machines, mostly Nautilus, a whole 2 racks of dumbbells, several benches, elliptical machines, reclining bicycle machines, treadmills ... it's awesome. And they're planning to do even more, like putting in a new sound system and LCD tvs.

Hope

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I remember a time not so long ago when America was a capitalist stronghold, where free market trades increased wealth, and blue chip companies ruled the indexes with large traders making zillions.

Feels like yesterday ......

Hold on .. IT WAS YESTERDAY !

I am sick unto death with having to vote for the lesser of 2 evils.
I consider McCain most definetly not a RWR conservative and with the pick of Palin, he has allayed(not removed) my fears of a dem lite administration.

Palin is there to secure the vote for the Republicans. And Biden is just er .. um .. well .. he's there.

408 pingjockey  Wed, Sep 17, 2008 5:15:20am

Chrissy Marhews has gone off the deep end. Called Gov. Palin an "empty vessel".
HEY! Chrissy, your guy is the empty head atop the empty suit!

Biden being 'there' is debatable! Palin is having a campaign event in Pa. I think, 5 to 7 thousand expected. Plugs is having one too...about one thousand 'hoped' for. Mwahahahaha!

411 littleoldlady  Wed, Sep 17, 2008 5:18:10am

I have to get to work...

/I owe, I owe...and all that jazz.

But I'm going to leave you with the simplest and most definitive explanation of how we got into this mess in the first place. (I'm sure this has been linked before, but what the heck!)

The subprime crisis.

Did anyone else think their was more than a little sarcasm when Bill Clinton said "Obama really knocked it out of the park with his choice of Joe Biden?" I expected all the delegates to bust out laughing.

Morning Lizards!

What's shaken? I see Michelle Malkin is on FNC right now.

416 opnion  Wed, Sep 17, 2008 5:22:08am

Good Morning, Wazzzzzzzzzup?
FNC is reporting that Barry will be dragging the teleprompter everywhere.
Think about it, even outdoor events. Imagine if McCain did that, I am sure that the MSM would be understanding.
The guy can't speak without a teleprompter without fumbling & stammering.
Would it be racist to wonder if his educational experience just might have been boosted by Affirmative Action?

re: #394 kcladderman

Right and everyone Pro Obama

That's a somewhat paranoid view. Here's the list of topics:

1. Squabble between Florida candidates re who took money from whom

2. GOP Jewish group accused of anti-Obama push poll

3. Points out that McCain staffers have had important connections to troubled organizations, as he accuses Obama of doing

4. Florida budget issues

5. Squabble re advertising in Florida races; McC not mentioned

6. Why is Obama campaign focusing on Carly Fiorina?

7. Obama will visit

8. Voter registration issues

9. Mortgage issues

10. Report of push poll against Obama

I'm having a hard time seeing how that adds up to the whole list being pro-Obama . . . or even relevant to Obama.

Just saw that. The feminists should be celebrating Palins' accomplishments. But, since she is a conservative woman, and therefore by definition off the reservation she must be destroyed. The party of JFK and Scoop Jackson has sunk to the level of sewer scum.

Operation Choas operatives should go to all those events and unplug it.

Barry UnPlugged.

That's what people need to hear.

The good news is this means he'll be even more unequipped to deal with the debates, lack of recent on-his-feet practice.

To answer your question, if Mac did this, the MSM would eat him alive as old and infirm.

Couldn't find anything, but, if your premise is that all of these guys have sticky fingers/dirty hands, I won't argue with you.

The page that I was linking to contains a set of short items re politics. The item re the fundraiser seems to have disappeared since I first linked to it. Sorry about that, but, again, if you're interested, you can check it out yourself.
