Can't anybody in Washington say something sensible about all these financial disasters? Obama and Pelosi are in a contest to say nothing as rudely as possible, but McCain nor Palin seems to have anything to say. Can't the campaign find some decent spokespersons? Not Fiorina, she hasn't a clue, that I can see.

You can see the article here:
Hackers broke into the Yahoo! e-mail account that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin used for official business as Alaska's governor, revealing as evidence a few inconsequential personal messages she has received since John McCain selected her as his running mate.
This is not true. There is no evidence to support this claim, and even the hacker is saying they found nothing to verify it, but the msm is promoting it.

Perhaps the problem (for the politician, not for the prophet) is that the truth might hurt.
Namely, perhaps Americans are not as rich as we like to pretend we are?
Whether it is the unemployed laborer who "states" his income to get a home loan... or a CEO who pimps his company to bankers knowing full well his company is worthless... it is all a sham.
How can any politician come out to the electorate and say "We've been buying houses that are too big, cars that are too expensive, and many are not working enough for what they area getting paid." Do you think that politician could get elected?
Near me is a large construction site (new school) that is nearing completion.... last night walking by it near sunset a lone workman - a plumber I suppose (he was fitting pipe), was working hard. He probably makes an ok living, but a decent living at that. However, for every one of him, how many others out there are just trying to find 6 figure incomes shuffling papers, or worse, just passing off schemes to others who are shuffling papers or scheming....?
Not that I believe abstract work is worthless - hardly, it is what I have done most of my life. Yet the lifestyles of so many Americans appear to me to be detached from the reality of the physical universe.

Obama runs a campaign of emotional opportunity. He uses the 24 hour news cycle to prey on the emotions of the weak. That needs to be understood.
Obama will take his shots in the morning so the media will play them all day long.
The McCain campaign is going to have learn that this response, while good, has to happen earlier in the day. McCain goes after Obama on his Fannie Mae contributions
If Obama uses what happened in Iraq today as an opportunity to advance his political career, I want his ass nailed to the wall and don't stop nailing!

This will help. The LGF Dictionary of terms. Moby.
------------------
Thanks, you beat me to it. Oh, what the hell, let's put it all for any and all to read.
Moby: An insidious and specialized type of left-wing troll who visits blogs and impersonates a conservative for the purpose of either spreading false rumors intended to sow dissension among conservative voters, or who purposely posts inflammatory and offensive comments for the purpose of discrediting the blog in question. The term is derived from the name of the liberal musician Moby, who famously suggested in February of 2004 that left-wing activists engage in this type of subterfuge: "For example, you can go on all the pro-life chat rooms and say you're an outraged right-wing voter and that you know that George Bush drove an ex-girlfriend to an abortion clinic and paid for her to get an abortion. Then you go to an anti-immigration Web site chat room and ask, 'What's all this about George Bush proposing amnesty for illegal aliens?'" The strategy has been frequently attempted on LGF and elsewhere, but has not been nearly as effective as Moby envisioned, since false rumors are easily debunked by fact-checking minions, and cartoonishly extreme commenters often get immediately identified as mobys and banned from LGF.

This is weeks old, don't know how I missed this, Charles probably had a thread.
British Deal With al-Sadr Betrayed Iraqi People.
The news about a secret deal between the British and anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr did not come as a surprise to us. Britain’s war policy has been clear for the past several years: the country demonstrated no readiness to make sustained efforts in a prolonged war, nor did it act as a serious partner determined to win the conflict.
There are three aspects in this British betrayal. First, striking a deal with the enemy; second, selling an Iraqi city to the enemy of their Iraqi hosts and partners; and third, by not informing their American partners of their plans, enabling the U.S. military’s reliance on an untrustworthy partner — something the British military leadership turned out to be.

I'm not the only one:Powerline outlines WaPost bias
The Post has no headlines or stories about Obama. It probably recognizes that, as John noted today, Obama is a spent force in any positive sense, and that the best it can do for him now is to remove the spotlight while amping up the attacks on McCain.
The story about McCain "embracing regulation after many years of opposition" appears on page 1. Author Michael Shear, who has emerged as a top anti-McCain hatchet man for the Post (he also wrote the silly BlackBerry piece), makes no mention of the fact that in 2005, McCain cosponsored the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act, the strongest legislation introduced up to that time to control Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Given recent developments, no fair story about McCain's position on regulation could omit this fact. But Shear (who was assisted on the story by fellow Democratic partisan Anne Kornblut) was not about to let it stand in the way of his hit piece, as the Washington Post pursues its relentless campaign to help elect Barack Obama.
Panic in the aisles.

This is hilarious from "FAIR":
FAIR disputes MSM is shill for Obama
How a myth is made
Unsurprisingly, the public has come to believe these repeated declarations of media bias. A Rasmussen poll (Rasmussen Reports, 7/19/08) found that 49 percent of respondents believe that reporters will try to help Obama win, while 14 percent believe most will try to help McCain. Strikingly, “45 percent say that most reporters would hide information if it hurt the candidate they wanted to win,” while only 30 percent disagree.Such polls reveal the power of the right-wing media in America. The myth of the pro-Obama media is the same as the myth of the liberal press, and it has been created by a standard strategy: Right-wing pundits declare repeatedly and vociferously that the media are biased in favor of liberals; centrist media pundits, who generally prefer critiques from the right because they don’t make a structural challenge to their work, concede that they have a point; and progressive critics, excluded from both the pro-establishment and the right-wing talkshows that dominate the media, go unheard
So FAIR doesn't dispute the poll itself, but insinuates that right-wing talk radio has lied to the people about the MSM. Yeah right, good luck with that.

For those on the left, the more operative words these days are “mainstream,” “establishment,” or “traditional.” And if one is feeling particularly aggrieved, the description of choice is increasingly — and surprisingly — “conservative.”

Obama seems to have shored himself up in the polls and is either barely leading or virtually tied.
I find myself feeling profoundly uncomfortable with the realization that the economy is flooded with possibly uncollectible debt at the federal, state, local and commercial level, and an inexperienced, naive, self-deceiving, stunningly narcissistic America-hating marxist with backing from two very wealthy people (Soros and Buffett) behind him might actually become president, while the mortal threat of a death-worshipping civilization that wants to drag the world back to the days when illiterate unwashed masses bowed in terror before bloodthirsty, wrathful gods is completely misunderstood and ignored by that same Marxist and the people who elected him.
I'm hardly a panic-monger, but I really, really feel uncomfortable with the above nightmare coming true. I simply can't imagine a greater cataclysm, other than the sun going nova or Mars colliding with the earth.

But it sure is whining isn't it? Are Powerline mobies too?
Please stop with the doom and gloom/woe is us meme! The MSM is in the tank for Obama - we've known that for 18 months now when they helped him basically cheat his way in the caucus/primary season and helped him beat Hillary. We see it every day. No need to remind us of it all the time! It's not something that can be changed right now, so there is no need to get in a dither over it.
The point to keep in mind, though, is this: after 8 years of GWB (who is despised by the media and the left), a Republican candidate who is not in the springtime of his life and who has lost many conservatives because of his immigration stance, and a VP pick who is now more reviled than Bush ever thought of being - we're still either a point or two ahead or tied in most polls.
Republican candidates always bloom late, usually within a couple weeks of the election. I read while ago that at this point in the 2004 election, Jon Kerry was ahead in the polls by 14%. And.He.Lost.
Here - this is a map that will make you feel better. It's from Dick Morris, and it should make you feel better.

The only time that Democrats reach across the aisle to Republicans is when they think they can pop the Republicans in the nose.
I want to hear about how Gov. Rossi would order the whole State audited from top to bottom. Just the talk of an audit will give the Dems in this State a serious brown shorts problem.

No.
Is your dry cleaners? how about your plumber?
Most businesses are small businesses that operate out of 1 or 2 bank accounts and have a line of credit with a personal guarantee.
The "titans" that are biting the dust were playing games with derivatives and credit swaps that amounted to ponzi schemes. They deserve to die. When they die that doesn't mean the stocks people bought through them go away (they don't) and it doesn't mean all banking goes away (plenty of banks never played in these "markets").
It means some self adoring bozos got what was coming to them. unfortunately, many around those bozos get hurt too, but it doesn't bring the world to an end.

"If you're reading this article online, you probably do know about astroturfing, but your friends who are less computer savvy do not: Astroturfing is the attempt to create the feeling of a grassroots movement by planting stories around the web through the use of paid or volunteer spammers."

He and his partners consider virtually everything about ASK to be top secret, from its client roster and revenue to even the number of its employees. IPOs were killed by Sarbanes Oxley.
They died a long time ago. The accounting costs for a public company start at $6 million a year. try taking a company with a gross of $35 million public with that millstone around its neck.
Private Equity doesn't "dry up" btw. Assets are losing value, but cash is unaffected. If an asset you have produces cash, its value will adjust upward once this is over. If it isn't, then you may not have had that valuable of an asset. If you have or are associated with a business that produces a cash flow, you will be fine.

2) Justifications for the decisions that were made should be coming from Congress. Why did the dems and your boy 0bama stop reforms in 2005?

$20 dollars a month for riding a bike to work? Sounds great if you don't have to worry about stuff like snow. And that amount of money would barely pay for maintenance on a bike. Either one tire or 2 tubes. take your pick. Having spent a summer biking to and from work awhile back I went through about two tires and four tubes. I would have to ask her "why?"
Is it because NYC is a very small place with a circle of people who are panicked? Finance folks hang out with each other in a very small world. They have the flu. That means everyone on the planet has the flu.
It will be a depression for anyone in the financial services industry, yes.
But fear will give way to greed. People with $ will lend it to businesses that produce cash and are therefore sure to pay it back. Mortgages are still a safe bet when you lend to qualified buyers.
But the people who were tweaking the black-scholes equation and maxed out the credit card doing it are going to feel real pain. And they hang out with folks like Orman and Greenspan.

Yeah I don't buy this whole "bike to work" in our modern economy. In the old, old days you lived in the city and took public transportation to the factory. Or you lived in the village and worked on a farm. With housing and modern offices where most people work zoned in such ways as it makes it impossible without cars. A legacy of the 1950s.

Are you in a state that is in play right now? If so, you may be seeing some of those ads. If not, like me, you probably won't see many of them, if any at all. Everything is focused on the battle ground states. If you're from a solid blue or a solid red - sorry.
I wish I could see some of them too, but my state is solid red and have no senators in jeopardy, so I don't want them throwing any money into our media markets.

From the Wall Street Journal today:
Barney's Rubble
In fact, Mr. Frank was publicly arguing for an increase in the size of their combined $1.4 trillion portfolios right up to the day they were bailed out. Even now, after he's been proven wrong about a taxpayer guarantee, he opposes Treasury's planned reduction in the size of the portfolios starting in 2010, according to a quote attributed to him in this newspaper last week. "Good luck on that," he reportedly said. Mr. Frank's spokeswoman hung up the phone when we sought confirmation Tuesday.
In a few days it will be very clear who is to blame for the recent financial problems. Democrats.

Each tire cost on average $15, and tubes were about 6 dollars. Not to mention other parts and wear and tear.
and extra food, plus being funky when you got to w*rk and double funky when you got home, plus bad weather, and people deliberately trying to hit you with their cars (happened to me, i was chased even), plus......

I bet if I had a reasonable bike I could save money in the spring to fall period. A 6 mile commute would only take half an hour to 45 minutes with the traffic. What is the health downside to breathing exhaust fumes compared to breathing in a internally air circulated car? For exercise, one can always bike around the neighborhood at 6AM when there is no traffic and on weekends. The exhaust is a real problem.

Jamie Gorelick, Mistress of Disaster
It's not often that one person plays key roles in two -- count 'em, two -- trillion-dollar disasters. Welcome, my friends, to the world of well-connected Democrat Jamie Gorelick.
Though she had no training or experience in finance, Gorelick was appointed the Vice Chairman of Fannie Mae and served in the role from 1997 to 2003. During that six-year period, she earned over $26 million.
During Gorelick's tenure, FNMA suffered a $10 billion accounting scandal, an ominous harbinger of the firm's looming troubles. One of the falsified transactions helped FNMA hit earnings targets for 1998, which triggered bonuses for top executives including nearly $800,000 to Gorelick.
In 2002 Business Week interviewed Gorelick concerning the health of FNMA. She responded, "We believe we are managed safely. We are very pleased that Moody's gave us an A-minus in the area of bank financial strength -- without a reference to the government in any way. Fannie Mae is among the handful of top-quality institutions."
Less than a year later regulators "accused Fannie Mae of improper accounting to the tune of $9 billion in unrecorded losses."

Yes, and the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac thing just really came out on Monday, Lehman Bros was yesterday, AIG today. It does take a bit of time to get ad copy written and produced, and then farmed out to media outlets.
Do you want some sloppy, half-assed commercial that has no substance? Or do you want good, facts-based, take no prisoners pieces? Why do you think the dems have been particularly silent (except for Obama, of course, and Nancy Pelosi, who couldn't keep her trap shut to save her life) these last three days? Why would Harry Reid admit that he didn't know what to do about the crisis, instead of instinctively blame it all on George Bush?
Harry Reid knows the democrats are mostly to blame for a good deal of it, and that can be backed up by voting records.
Give it time and stop with the panic!

The Real Culprits In This Meltdown
The untold story in this whole national crisis is that President Clinton put on steroids the Community Redevelopment Act, a well-intended Carter-era law designed to encourage minority homeownership. And in so doing, he helped create the market for the risky subprime loans that he and Democrats now decry as not only greedy but "predatory."As soon as Clinton crony Franklin Delano Raines took the helm in 1999 at Fannie Mae, for example, he used it as his personal piggy bank, looting it for a total of almost $100 million in compensation by the time he left in early 2005 under an ethical cloud.
Franklin Raines is currently one of Barack Obama's chief economic advisers.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I have noticed there is some discussion of stocks going on. I like/and have been buying railroads. they seem more resistant to high energy prices (compared to trucking) and usually pay a dividend. Dividend-paying stocks are important to me. Dividends can't be faked or be a victim of 'creative bookkeeping'. The company has to produce the dividend money every 3 months. I view this as a sign of the company's good financial health.
I hope you all will permit me to re-post a comment I wrote on the previous thread. What I wrote means a lot to me and I want it to be well known among the lizards. When you read it you will understand why. Here I go:
I want to go off-topic for a minute and talk about something that came to my attention today. I spend more time in the lounge then here on the threads, but some lizards have been expressing concern about my financial health due to all the market swings lately. Yes, I am a day-trader and yes my stock portfolio has taken a small hit , but nothing massive and ruinous. In fact, I have been on the stock-trading sidelines the last few weeks because I know that conditions like this usually cause more losses then gains. I just wanted to say that I am truly touched that fellow lizards would express this much concern for someone they have never meet ( I have only meet about 5 lizards in person). this concern means a great deal to me. I think this concern is a reflection on Charles, the great site he has built, and the wonderful people this site attracts. Again, thanks for your concern for me.

Obama's money troubles are going to force him to go off the trail quite often and beg for more cash. And I'm expecting to hear of an ad about last night's Hollywood extravaganza very soon, complete with quotes.
And look at the big money folks McCain picked up just today - Donald Trump (billionaire) and Lynne Forester de Rothschild (gajillionaire, with friends who also have gajillions of dollars).
Today was a good day for Mccain, over all. Got those two new major endorsements, and Palin took part in her first Townhall Meeting today, and by all accounts did quite well. And she had her second media interview on Fox's H&C, which is #2 in the ratings nowadays.

I was thinking it was just me who believed that. Geez...even short-haul Providence & Worcester pays a dividend. Problem is, IMHO, not enough railways are publicly traded....of course you have companies like Union Pacific or Canadian National to blame for that for gobbling up other Class 1 long-haul railways as well as various reigonal carriers.

Best part of this whole mess that's the Obama campaign? He's not funding a lot of senatorial campaigns on the trail. Might see a big shift come November in Washington.
Let's see: Obama picked up about 10 mil last night in Hollywood, and had a record month in August, taking in 66 mil. But his burn rate is 80% per month, so by the end of September, he'll be hurting for more cash.
John McCain and the RNC has 300 mil, and will probably be taking in much more surrounding the debates.
But the RNC is funneling money to the down tickets, Obama is not. And the DNC is lucky if it has two nickels to rub together after their convention is paid off. Not much help from them for the down tickets.
Susan Estrich tonight on Greta VS said that the reason Obama's blowing through so much cash is because of his bloated staff. And although they may pull out of states they know they can't win, they'll still beef up staff in states they're fighting in. No savings there.
And pardon me if I'm wrong, but I just don't perceive Joe Biden as a big-bucks donor draw.

I was led to believe that was a byproduct of the ethanol boom. He probably still likes them for slightly different reasons and reportedly has BNSF (stock symbol BNI) and Omaha-based Union Pacific (symbol UNP) in his portfolio.
Aside from Providence & Worcester (PWX) and Canadian Pacific (CP) the railways seem to be riding out this tempest rather nicely.

I've read a lot about that, but the problem is decreasing amounts of track and lack of investment in rail cars. This is especially lacking in the West where interstate semi distribution of goods is totally dominant.

There are some relatively new or expanded reigonal railways (Reading & Northern; Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern; New York, Susquehanna & Western; Montreal, Maine & Atlantic; Paducah & Louisville; Montana Rail Link; Western New York & Pennsylvania not to mention the RJ Corman family of shortlines) that purchase lengthy-but-unwanted sections of track from the long-haul railways and provide a better level of customer-oriented service that the larger railways didn't provide when they were serviceing the industries along the line. I think it's a good business model and think it's a shame that some of these companies aren't publicly traded (with the exception of Providence & Wrocester or the Genessee & Wyoming family of lines).
Part of their marketing strategy is to explain how many tractors trailers a single carload could take off local highways.

The intrusion into Sarah Palin's email inbox was not merely a scummy invasion of privacy. It was also almost certainly a federal crime, one that the FBI and Secret Service are investigating. (And the Secret Service tends to look at this sort of thing ... personally.) This isn't merely part of "politics ain't beanbag," it's criminal. And anyone encouraging these criminals or utilizing the fruits of their crimes is tossing in with the criminals. I think we'll see in the next couple of days which side the media and Obama's campaign (but I repeat myself) stand on.

Maybe that's why our Yorkie loves cukes and tomatoes.
Possibly, but a more likely reason is that dog, just like cats, need the nutrition from those to help with their night vision. Cats' and dogs' eyes use nutrients from non-leafy veggies (even if they're actually fruits) to maintain the reflector membranes in their retinas.

I attended a Madonna's concert last Tuesday. Professional staging, sound, lightning, half themes boring for my taste, awful wardrobe overall and thousands of subliminal shots in four big screens: from nazis, kids with AK's, wars, you know, all politically correct crap mixed which ended with four pictures of Mr. Hussein Obama along the stage that faded away after three or four seconds, not milliseconds. People cheered.
There are also idiots like those who cheered that don't have a clue of what McCain/Palin means but believe any media garbage. It may be obvious, but I'd be afraid of this since they can vote and this happened before in Spain.
(Spain is sinking at a higher rate that the rest of Europe and that twit of zapatero has rushed heading for a tour starting in Syria, Asia and even New York (where nobody will go and meet him, no one of the US government have already met him) just to show he is doing something.
Beware of Obama, he is copying the bipolar behaviour and tactics of this imbecile, specially the way to tell the biggest lies without a blink.

This has probably already been said, but the FBI and USSS are investigating the hack and publishing of Gov. Palin's email account. Even if you think she has something to hide, most all vigilante acts are still criminal acts... It (hacking her account) is a stupid and unethical stunt that will likely get someone convicted.
It seems funny that those who cry loudest about the government prying into domestic phone calls and such to look for terrorists seem to see no wrong in prying into Palin's emails. I wonder if the reason they fear the domestic "spying" is that they, if they had this ability, would use their finds to hurt and blackmail and can't conceive that others may be more scrupulous and ethical.

I'm glad that some do see the problem with private citizens revealing such information, regardless of motive or reason. Outside of official investigating of crime, there is no ethical reason for such behavior. I, unlike Slashdot, have no problem with the gov't conducting such surveillance, so long as there is proper oversight and accountability. I thought that was his pet project in Nairobi....
Kenya, I think.
Both were born to Kenyan fathers of the same tribe (the Luo) from the same province (Nyanza), and both of their fathers came as boys to America aboard the same airplane. Growing up, neither Ochieng nor Obama knew their fathers, who both abandoned their American mothers and left their American-born children behind. Both of their fathers returned to Africa in the early 1960s and became friends, bonding at Kenyan bars over their favorite drink — Scotch. Both Ochieng's and Obama's mothers contracted ovarian cancer. (Hers survived it; his did not). Both Ochieng and Obama were born in the U.S. in August 1961 — only weeks apart.
But for someone with parallel beginnings, Juliette Akinyi Ochieng is quite different: Evangelical Christian. Working class. Military veteran. Pro-life. Conservative Republican.
SNIP
Recent visitors to her site cannot miss her new mission: Making good on a promise to a Kenyan school named in honor of Barack Obama.
It's a promise, she says, that Barack Obama broke.
In August 2006, Senator Obama toured Kenya, his first trip to his father's nation. Thousands of Kenyans welcomed him, international media followed wherever he went, and glowing stories flowed forth.
One spot he visited was the recently renamed Senator Obama Kogelo Secondary School in Nyang'oma-Kogelo, a village in equatorial western Kenya where Obama's roots go deep: His father, Barack Sr., was born there. His 86-year-old step-grandmother, Sarah, still lives there in a brick shanty with a tin roof and no running water.
Almost exactly two years ago, Barack Obama visited the school built upon land that, decades ago, Obama's grandfather donated. In anticipation of Obama's visit, the school changed its name to honor the village's most famous progeny, Barack Jr.
The school had only four classrooms. It lacked water, functioning bathrooms and even electricity. A third of its students were orphans. Its extreme need made Senator Obama's speech there all the more riveting for the village residents.
"Hopefully, I can provide some assistance in the future to this school and all that it can be," Obama said. Looking directly at the school's principal, Yuanita Obiero, and her teachers, he added, "I know you are working very hard and struggling to bring up this school, but I have said I will assist the school, and I will do so."
In the two years since, Obama has experienced a meteoric political rise, becoming the Democratic flag-bearer, authoring a best-seller and last year, with his wife, Michelle, earning $4.2 million. He bought a luxury home. Last year, he gave $240,000 to charities.
But apparently not to the Senator Obama Kogelo School. "Senator Obama has not honored the promises he gave me when we met in 2006 and in his earlier letter to the school," Principal Obiero has told the London-based, conservative tabloid EveningStandard. "He has not given us even one shilling. But we still have hope."
As the Standard reports it, Principal Obiero explained, "We interpreted his words as meaning he would help fund the school, either personally or by raising sponsors or both, in order to give our school desperately needed modern facilities and a face-lift."

And the crony got to keep the millions that were supposed to be spent on it.
YEAH RIGHT.
anyone got a link to this.

Lord, give me the serenity to accept that which happens in my life, the courage to fight against the foul, the heart to help those around me, and the common sense NOT TO PISS MANDY OFF

Rothschild just pointed out the hypocrisy of Hillary re: equal pay. BHO pays women on his staff 77 per cent of what he pays women. She noted that Sen. McCain has more women in higher positions than BHO. And, she noted that the victim in the Tail-Hook scandal went to Sen. McCain.
Ooh. She just tore a few strips off of BHO.

Do I gotta? That little brown circle in the middle always reminds me of Obama's "victory sign."
