50 'Buzziest Blog Posts' - LGF is #3

Politics | Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 2:06:21 pm PDT

I think it’s supposed to be an honor to be on this list of the 50 Buzziest Blog Posts of All Time, but Nerve.com’s description of the Rathergate affair amounts to a really dumb conspiracy theory.

3. “Bush Guard Documents: Forged” 9/9/04

Sure, this post helped give us four more years of George W. Bush, but can you blame the blogger? As he points out here, CBS fell for an obvious trap — an attempt by the right-wing to change the topic from Bush’s actual military service to a debate about the alleged lies of the “liberal media.” Dan Rather went down in flames for somebody else’s mistake, and Kerry, who could’ve challenged Bush far more forcefully to clear up the mess, went on to lose the election. Thanks, Little Green Footballs.

An “attempt by the right wing to change the topic?” They’ve got to be joking. Every person involved was a fanatical leftist, from Mary Mapes all the way down to Bill Burkett. They tried to pull a tremendous scam on the voters with a last minute hit job based on fraudulent documents, and they got caught. Never attribute to convoluted conspiracies what can be easily explained by obsession and stupidity.

But you’re very welcome, Nerve.com.

Palin disinvited from Iran rally

The organizers of an anti-Iran rally Monday rescinded their invitation to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin after Democrats protested that her presence would turn the event into a political rally, McCain campaign and Jewish community sources said.

/but it was okay when just Hillary was invited

The things leftists will do to void the electoral process.

LGF - Kingmakers!

/"There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone."

So... Kerry would have needed widespread, un-debunked lies in order to win... got it.

Also, Dan Rather not vetting Dan Rather's sources (or even, you know, looking at the damn document and thinking about what typewritten text looks like) is not Dan Rather's mistake, but somebody else's... got it.

37 Intrepid  Thu, Sep 18, 2008 2:18:20pm

I saw an LGF thread on the Hillary Clinton Forum (PUMA site) just an hour ago. It was from a post in May where Obama's ties to Soros and ACORN were explored.

Reading at that site gives me great pleasure, as I never thought I'd see die-hard Clinton fans spurring each other on to listen to and defend Rush Limbaugh.

It's a topsy-turvy world, I tells ya!

54 johnnyreb  Thu, Sep 18, 2008 2:23:15pm

OK, Charles breaks up a scheme by the left wing media (aka Dan Rather) in an attempt to influence a national election for President of the US by using documents that any 5th grader could tell were fake, and all he gets is 3rd place?

If this was the other way around and Republicans had tried this, it would still be in the news every day of this election cycle.

55 LoFlyer  Thu, Sep 18, 2008 2:23:36pm

LGF's finest moment, and I was proud to be a part of it. It's kinda interesting watching the MSM implode over Palin. (Hint to MSM, sometimes its better to lose a battle but win the war. Palin is just a battle, Viewer confidence in the MSM wasn't real good to start with. Like 25 percent approval rating, and now the MSM is lying through the teeth 100 percent of the time with Palin. American's are not dumb and your ratings are dropping like rocks and Fox's ratings are climbing like a eagle. Any intelligent human would start recognizing a cause and effect in the ratings game. Unfortunately your fanaticism over Obama's socialist agenda has clouded your logic and cognitive functions. You are about to lose the war on viewer preference.)
The funniest thing is how the MSM is portraying the Email hacker is the victim, and Palin as the avenging angel of doom.
/Frack 'em and the horse they rode in on....

Also, Dan Rather not vetting Dan Rather's sources (or even, you know, looking at the damn document and thinking about what typewritten text looks like) is not Dan Rather's mistake, but somebody else's... got it.

Recall from LGF at the time....Big Dan Rather had been working on that story for 3.5 years. Started soon after the 2000 election, he had fantasies of taking down President Bush with a big October 2004 surprise. Some speculation is that his plan wasn't panning out, hence the use of the fake docs. Also remember that his plan was to run the story in October, but word got out about it so he was forced to do it early.

This person seems just insane. I'm just so tired of their tedious nonsense. It's all like a giant Andy Kaufman prank and rational people are the targets.

68 zombie  Thu, Sep 18, 2008 2:29:16pm

This brings up an important point:

The Left tried a wide variety of dirty tricks in 2004. Charles stopped one of the biggest ones cold in its tracks, with the Throbbing Memo. Other dirty tricks were also debunked (though less conclusively). In 2008, they announced "No more Mr. Nice Guy" and acted like the glvoes were off.

And yet here we are with 48 days to go, and where are the dirty tricks? The smears against Palin hardly count -- they are absolutely infantile and counter-productive.

Where are the dirty tricks against McCain?

A judge just threw out the "McCain isn't a US citizen" attempt. FAIL.

Air America/Randi Rhodes' claim that McCain was treated like a VIP and given cushy treatment in Hanoi was simply laughed out of the universe. FAIL.

Pointing out the his wife is a rich beer heiress -- who cares? FAIL.

They are trying to get her into a scandel. The email hacking was an attempt to dig up dirt. Using her political enemies in Alaska and passing them off as normal people...kind of there.

Yesterday, ABC news investigative blog has the following story subjects:

Palin 24
McCain 2
Biden 1
Obama 0

I think that is the dirty trick. Just keep hammering and hammering on the Governor.

Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott's 2002 endorsement of Strom Thurmond's pro-segregationist platform — and TPM's breaking of the story — helped boost the legitimacy of blogs as news gatherers even as it signaled the decline of Lott's career.

Lott didn't endorse Thurmond's pro-segregationist platform, he just said that Thurmond was a good guy. Or am I wrong?

And now one of their own may have a son who broke a federal law by hacking into Sarah Palin's private e-mail account?

This may not bode well for TN dems this November.

That is one of the most dishonest paragraphs I have ever seen.

Dan and Mary Mapes fell for the work of a KNOWN KOOK because THEY WANTED IT TO BE TRUE.

My father, a four-decade veteran of the USAF and the 147th/111th TANG, was called by one of Mapes' gremlins and chewed him a new anal orifice.

Indeed, among the pop culture idiocy and flash in the pan nonsense cited, Charles actually accomplished something of value---he helped expose and destroy and effort to destroy a President.

I'm surprised they didn't dig up any posts to add to this list at the National Enquirer site, referring to the earliest signs of John Edwards' affair.

How irritating to the left such a post would have been, possibly depriving the nation of a President (or VP) who was only proven to be a liar and a cheat.

Now if only we could convince the lefties that paying higher taxes is not the true definition of patriotism. I can understand charitable donations to worthy causes. But higher taxes to grow government might reasonably be regarded as unpatriotic if the higher taxes finance handouts for the lazy, non-tax paying able-bodied folks. All at the expense of the working, productive members of society. And raising taxes to inject socialist programs that model our nation's economy after the failed model of communism is no patriotic endeavor.

Maybe I shouldn't pay much attention to the polls, but a number of them look not so good for McCain today. I am depressed at the thought of an Obummer presidency.

I'm not looking or paying attention until after the VP debate and at least 2 out of the 3 Presidential ones. They mean nothing until then, IMHO

That was the son of a Democrat congress lady from Milwaukee. Can you believe the lack of outrage. Imagine if a conservative Republican's kid did the same thing.

Actually it was the son of a Democrat congresswoman, the son of the Democrat former acting mayor of Milwaukee along with an out of town Democrat "activist" that did the tire slashing. It was an "prank" they code-named "Operation elephant take-down". Fortunately they were all caught and, even better, got jail time.

BTW, the son of the congresswoman goes by the name (and I'm not making this up) "Supreme Solar Allah".

I know what a bunch of costumed patriots thought of taxes as they dumped tea over the side.

261 zombie  Thu, Sep 18, 2008 3:15:10pm

The Left has now had FOUR YEARS to reproduce the memos on a 1972-era machine. FOUR YEARS. And they haven't done it. (They probably haven't even tried, because they know it's impossible.)

They've also had FOUR YEARS to explain how the default settings of the 2004 Mac version of MSWord just happened, by sheer random blind luck, to match every single detail, every serif on every font, every kerning space down to the last nanometer, of a document supposedly written on a typewriter in 1972. And in that four years, they have once again failed -- and once again they probably didn't even try, because they know that there is no explanation -- other than what Charles proved, beyond any doubt, that the documents are modern forgeries.

The case was closed, permanently, mid-way between the second and third throbs, five minutes after he first posted it. Game over.

Sadly, I know many people in that cult. Hell, I'm related to people in that cult.

I haven't talked to any of them in the last week, since the Rosenberg's fellow spy finally confessed, but I doubt it would have any effect on their belief system in any case.

Actually, I learned early in life to recognize the symptoms of cognitive dissonance because of this very case. Listening to the adults say, "The Rosenbergs were framed -- AND we're proud of what they did!" was once of my formative "A ha!" moments.

State rep says son focus of Palin e-mail hack

NASHVILLE - State Rep. Mike Kernell said today that he was aware of Internet rumors about his son being the subject of speculation that he accessed the personal e-mail of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Asked whether he or his son, a student at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, had been contacted by authorities investigating the break-in of Palin's account, he responded:

"Me, no."

As far as his 20-year-old son, David, he said: "I can't say. That doesn't mean he has or hasn't (been contacted by investigators."

Kernell, D-Memphis, cited the father-son relationship.

He said he had talked to his son today, but that he talks to his son regularly.

He declined further comment.

Attempts to reach the younger Kernell for comment were not successful.

That figures.

There they go again... When I worked for the Army Department in the 1970's the IBM Typewriter issued to my office was more or less the same type issued in the late '60's and early '70's. NO WAY could it do the spacing and kerning tricks on the "Rathergate Memo." To do that you needed - minimally at the time a "VYDEK" word processing machine (Historic Sidelight - Vydek was a division of EXXON of all people) even IBM "MTST's" and "MCST's" couldn't do the spacing. Amazingly, my Gateway Model 400 with MS Word could - set to default, Times New Roman and 12 point print. At the time I also had an IBM short carriage Selectric I ball typewriter ("borrowed" - too long a story to get into here) which couldn't do it either. CBS was caught and COLD BUSTED on this one - Rather's and Mapes' departures confirmed this FACT. the Rathergate
story made me a reader. My distant cousin's seizure by HAMAS and your forbearance, Charles, made me a contributor.

My favorite made up conspiracy theory about Rathergate is the one that says the TANG memos were scanned from GWB's FBI file when the Clintons had them in their possession. But instead of xeroxing all those pages and removing them from the White House (Sandy Berger's pants weren't big enough) they used a software program that scanned the pages of text into Word documents. Every good law office has that software.

Which made them really bad for blackmail material, so they pawned them off on John Kerry's operatives.

Sorry for responding way late--out with the dogs.

I used an IBM Executive model (not a selectric, with the idiot ball that the type was arranged on). The Executive had proportional font, so when I made a mistake on the letter m, I had to backspace 3 times. Most letters were worth 2 spaces, and i and l were only 1 space. It COULD NOT do sub or superscript. I had to release the paper, ooch it up a little, and type my footnote number that way.

The ribbon was actually a thin one-time use film, where, if you didn't shread it, you could sit and read all the documents typed using that spool of one-use ribbon film.

The finished product looked, relatively speaking, great.

-S-

The only thing that could have possibly done any of this at that time was the IBM Mag Card system. And there is no way the Texas NAG would have had one then. Us active duty people didn't even get them until 1983 or so. And they were finicky and the mag cards were very sensitive to any magnetic fields.

This is unbelievable. Chicago Mayor Richie Daley is complaining about the AIG bail out. Not the cash per se , but that it should have gone to education.
Hmmm, the Chicago Public School System gets more money per pupil than most state school districts. The return on investment? Any kid that can spell their own name right the first time is considered a serious intellectual.
It is not about money, it is uncaring parents, semi-literate teachers & corruption.

re: #353 mich-again

My favorite made up conspiracy theory about Rathergate is the one that says the TANG memos were scanned from GWB's FBI file when the Clintons had them in their possession. But instead of xeroxing all those pages and removing them from the White House (Sandy Berger's pants weren't big enough) they used a software program that scanned the pages of text into Word documents. Every good law office has that software.

Which made them really bad for blackmail material, so they pawned them off on John Kerry's operatives.

"mich" -

In which case, either the Kerry Campaign or CBS or both deserved to get Pwn'd due to "Stu-Pid-Did-I-Did-Ity."

Everybody who has not seen it--or not seen it recently--should watch Preston Sturges' movie, "The Great McGinty"--which begins with a bum voting more times than anyone else on election day.

People should also check out the original film of "The Front Page," starring Pat O'Brien and Adolphe Menjou, for a nicely cynical view of reporters and politicians by a former reporter.

Palin disinvited from Iran rally

/but it was okay when just Hillary was invited

Unbelievable. This could only have come from the rally organizers, the people at the top. Did they really think that Palin would turn the event into a political rally?

The answer is no. This event clearly was organized as a democrat faux-show of support for the blocking of Iranian nuclear ambitions, but as with other faux-shows, it was nothing more than dust on the wind.

Think about it. Why would any rally organizer disinvite the most intriguing VP candidate of at least the last 100 years from a "non-partisan" event? The answer is painfully obvious.

Better late to the thread than never, but just wanted to say that the Throbbing memo incident was what brought me to LGF. Charles Johnson is living proof that one person can make a difference.

Same old lie. The "documents were forged, but the facts were right" crap we've heard a million times.

Move along, nothing to see here.

LGF has shown itself to be a capable guardian for the truth. Charles deserves much credit for his vigilance.

I just sent this to LGF using the Contact feature but am reprinting it here in the comments section for anyone who might be interested:

I'm enrolled in a Politics & the Media class at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) and among the required reading texts is one titled "American Media Politics in Transition" by one Jeremy D. Mayer of George Mason University. You should check out this piece of ****. Chapter 11, The Internet and the Future of Media Politics, mentions Rather-gate but does not give credit to LGF; this despite LGF being on a list of most popular blogs on the opposite page. Having to read & study this text from cover to cover was so painful for me. It is riddled throughout with blatant left-wing bias (despite containing a whole chapter devoted to the evils of bias) and outright lies. And yet my distinguished PhD prof made it required reading and gave a mid-term on it yesterday. About an inch thick, comprised of some 300-odd pages, it's a sorry-ass excuse for university level teaching. You should see all my margin notes written in red with exclamation points as I encountered one example after the other of unveiled liberal tilt, artful omissions, half-truths and lies. Author Mayer should be ashamed of himself; McGraw Hill should be ashamed for printing this piece of shit, and my professor (Dr. Leonard) should be ashamed for indoctrinating Poli-Sci majors with this propaganda. I thought you might be interested in knowing this text that mentions LGF (on an outdated list even though the text was written in 2008) is out there. And I thought you might want to read Mayer's treatment of Rather-gate. -- Yankee Sojourner
