Tenn. Democratic Representative's Son Focus of Palin Email Hacking

Politics | Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 4:01:35 pm PDT

It’s not a good idea to break into a vice presidential candidate’s email account: State rep says son focus of Palin e-mail hacking rumors.

NASHVILLE - State Rep. Mike Kernell said today that he was aware of Internet rumors about his son being the subject of speculation that he accessed the personal e-mail of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Asked whether he or his son, a student at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, had been contacted by authorities investigating the break-in of Palin’s account, he responded: “Me, no.”

As far as his 20-year-old son, David, he said: “I can’t say. That doesn’t mean he has or hasn’t (been contacted by investigators).”

Kernell, D-Memphis, cited the father-son relationship.

Note: there was really no “hacking” involved here. Just some good guesses combined with publicly available information, used to trick Yahoo’s password reset feature into assigning a new password to the account.

...The best part is that he is quoted as saying he didn't find any evidence that the account was used improperly (as in for secure state business). I noted this yesterday: Many state workers (me included) have a personal e-mail account so we don't end up using our work account provided by taxpayer dollars for personal reasons. It appears that Gov. Palin did just that.

...but that won't stop the donks from digging into the manure pile hoping to find a pony inside.

A first-hand account reported by the Associated Press suggested her account was vulnerable because a hacker was able to impersonate her online and obtain her passord [sic].

...

Using those details, the hacker tricked Yahoo Inc.'s service into assigning a new password, "popcorn," for Palin's e-mail account

The hacker "impersonated" Palin, and "tricked" Yahoo. Different words for "hacked." How about "lied" and "broke in."

Yeah but does he not need the old password to get a new one?

First offense, Daddy is powerful TN Democrat politician, the kid will walk out of the federal courthouse with a slap on the hand. His Daddy will whisper in his ear, "Nice work, son. Too bad you got caught."

Uhm, I don't think so. You may not be aware of how many Democrat politicians down here in TN have been sent to federal prison the last 3-4 years as part of a fed sting called "Tennessee Waltz". Harold Ford Jr's uncle, ex-Sen. John Ford, is now serving his first of five years for taking bribes from insurance companies to secure his influence in our state insurance program.

And that was in Memphis, where a trial (if it comes to that) would be held, most likely.

So if this shebang does end up as a federal criminal prosecution, he won't be getting any leniency.

Iranian president takes Obama up on offer

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad put Barack Obama on the spot Thursday, offering to debate with both U.S. presidential candidates when he arrives at the United Nations next week for its annual summit.

The fiery Iranian leader, who provoked a storm of controversy when he visited last year, said he would debate global issues at a public forum in UN headquarters if the candidates agreed.

Obama said early in his campaign that, as president, he would be prepared to meet the leaders of U.S. foes such as Iran and Syria.

These tatics are not unknown to the Obama Campaign.

Obama vs. Ryan

As the campaign progressed, the lawsuit brought by the Chicago Tribune to open child custody files from Ryan's divorce was still continuing. Barack Obama's backers emailed reporters about the divorce controversy, but refrained from on-the-record commentary about the divorce files.[8] On March 29, 2004, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider ruled that several of the Ryans' divorce records should be opened to the public, and ruled that a court-appointed referee would later decide which custody files should remain sealed to protect the interests of Ryan's young child.[9] A few days later, on April 2, 2004, Barack Obama changed his position about the Ryans' soon-to-be-released divorce records, and called on Democrats to not inject them into the campaign.[8]

Obama, in his public statements takes the high road, but Chicago machine operatives did the dirty work.

Sound familiar? Other do the dirty work and smearing, trashing and going after Palin. Obama takes the high road and says family is off limits.

In previous race he used technicalities to disqualify opponents. Obama avoided a straight up election on issue chosing instead political machinations.

Given Obama's history of Chicago politics as usual, why shouldn't I go the conspiracy route and think the whole is was an operation aimed at gaining exactly what the hacker stated he was looking for, official business in personal accounts. But with complete plausible deniablity on Obama's part.

To resurrect an old phrase:
What did Obama know and when did he know it?

re: #171 FrogMarch

It wasn't Sarah's password....that wasn't how the security was breached..The problem lies with Yahoo's email system -- it enables ANYONE to claim "hey, I lost my password, I think I need a new one" -- so you enter info to get a new password (you answer Yahoo's so-called security questions, such as "What is your birthdate?" all the questions and the answers are available -- if you're a public figure -- Sarah's birthdate, place of birth, everything, is out there...the hacker claims it only took him 45 minutes to get a "new" password (of his choosing). Anyway, the problem is with honest people (like Sarah) who when asked a "security" question, answer honestly...they give the correct info...Thus, the real problem is that Sarah was too honest...that's the bottom line.

Both the Secret Service and FBI are looking into this. Seems that the hacker and anyone who posted the stolen emails could be liable for some time in the cross bar hotel. Just because they can hack/social engineer their way into someone's email account, shows their incredible lack of regard for another's privacy. I wonder if the hackers would like to have their life laid open for all to see on the internet.

Hypocrite, thy name is democrat. We've had leaked/recorded cell phone conversations, stolen email accounts, etc all from the 'rats who whine the most about government intrusion into the lives of terrorists.

Let's say some asshole breaks into your house and steals your stuff, and when you call the police they tell you that it's your own fault for buying those cheap locks from Home Depot that are so easy to pick.

Hey....not so funny. A few years back, a few of my neighbors (very rural neighborhood) and I were having problems with livestock being let loose or stolen, barns being broken in to, and one person had a car stripped in the drive. The comment from the cops, and I quote: "if you people didn't have such neat stuff in this neighborhood, you probably wouldn't be having these problems." NO JOKE!

re: #194 J.S.

So you are saying that this would never be a problem for Democrats?

Dear God! We have to win this election or women will continue to be treated like this for generations because the msm has condoned it with their own behavior. It's OK to run sexist smears and attacks against your opponents- no one blinks!

Believe me- women across this country will think twice about running for office because of this treatment, and it's the entire country who will lose out because many good, honest citizens (who happen to be female) will not want this sort of scrutiny for themselves or their family. And when we lose potentially good civic leaders- we all lose.

Incompetents. To find problems like this, they're supposed to set up their own account for testing. Use up bonus points and leave the book club.

I resent that comment. It usually takes an honest person getting screwed over to realize that there are people out there who will screw you over. It's a tough way to learn savviness, but it doesn't mean she isn't honest.

I agree with you. An honest, ethical and principled person rarely believes that anyone will actually do dishonest and unethical things. They're not stupid - they know that things like this happen, but they just don't believe they would ever be the focus of such antics.

Not only should she totally understand how web security works, which companies are effective at it, but Palin should be required to know how to do circuit analysis (both analog and digital) and have a deep understanding of "Design Patterns", too.

WLN! How the recovery coming?

Well, you opened a can of worms by asking me that. I feel fine. Not much pain at all, appetite has come back, I'm voiding ok, but haven't had a bowel movement in two days (mainly because I was not too hungry after the surgery).

I'm driving to the store, ran the vacuum in my apartment. Not sleeping to well, because Vicoden "wires" me instead of sedating me. That happens to some people on opiates.

But the weird thing is, I am bruised from the incision down to the scrotum as if someone beat my crouch with a baseball bat. Black and blue, doing a purple rain. And I am swelled up around the crouch, almost like I am carry a small baby low.

I when back to the acute care clinic last night, and the nurse said that that can happen, she checked me out, she said I was ok, the bruising and swelling should go away with in the week.

I've been doing vitals about 6 times a day. I have a good cuff here. Blood pressure good, temp good, heart rate good, incision area is not "fevered," and the areas where I've had some blood infiltrate, is soft, not hard. A little spot of dried blood about the size of a half-dollar on the bandage, no oozing, foul smells etc.

So, I don't know. I feel really good. But it seems all that hanging skin that I have from my weight lost over the last two years has swelled up and bruised really bad.

Any Lizards with medical training have any idea why so much swelling? This hernia was on the left side, I had one repaired 20 years ago on the right side and I don't even remember a scar after everything healed.

Re: changing someone's password without their permission

Is what this person did technically illegal?

Yes. Accessing another person's computer account is illegal in several different ways and at all jurisdictional levels. It is considered to be precisely the same as kicking in the back door of someone else's house and entering.

But it goes far beyond that. He didn't just illegally access her account. He stole personal emails. He stole her contact list. He stole the cell phone numbers of several family members and other individuals. And he posted all of that stolen information on a public forum with the intent of distributing it, knowing full well that it would cause harm. At this point, we're squarely in the realm of the Feds, who have very, very tough laws against this specific offense, in addition to those concerned with gaining illegal access.

I would guess that he's looking at between 15 to 20 years maximum, just on the two or three charges that are blazingly obvious, plus between a quarter and a half million in fines. The DoJ will undoubtedly file, or at least threaten to file, a whole dumptruck's worth of additional charges, just to leverage a plea bargain.

I have no idea if it's the kid everyone is pointing at, but it looks pretty damning at the moment. If true, daddy's position in the Democratic party calls a whole 'nother raft of questions - and possibly some very interesting charges - into question.

Really? I did a search on Google, over 25,000 hits like this.

"Franklin D. Raines has been quietly constructing a new life for himself. He has shaved eight points off his golf handicap, taken a corner office in Steve Case's D.C. conglomeration of finance, entertainment and health-care companies and more recently, taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters."

Then I thought about it a bit, when claiming he's not an adviser, he used the word "IS". Classic...

You're all too hard on so.cal.swede. It's not that Palin wasn't internet-savvy enough. It's that her campaign and Secret Service team were evidently unaware of the potential threat to her accounts.

Politics is blood sport. You have to be ready.

First of all, the little twerp should be prosecuted. What he did is a crime, whether it can be proven in a court or just accepted on moral grounds.

That said, you are spot-on about MSM complicity. That they would run with a fabricated story on her emails, without ever questioning or exhibiting outrage at the privacy violations, makes me sick to my stomach and sad for my country.

They'd make the twerp a hero, if they could get away with it.

The "Hacker" Got Palin's Yahoo Account from the Democrats' Release of Her Personal Information -- With an Assist from the Washington Post

Remember when the Democrats improperly released that big file on Palin containing much of her personal information? Including most of her Social Security number?

They released Palin's Yahoo account identification, and the Washington Post printed it. On September 10th.

re: #400 willowone

Explanation of Obama's worldview as a community "organizer here:

[Link: www.theobamafile.com...]

"Both the CCRC and the DCP were built on the Alinsky model of community agitation, wherein paid organizers learned how to "rub raw the sores of discontent," in Alinsky's words.

Alinsky viewed as supremely important the role of the organizer, or master manipulator, whose guidance was responsible for setting the agendas of the People’s Organization. "The organizer," Alinsky wrote, "is in a true sense reaching for the highest level for which man can reach -- to create, to be a 'great creator,' to play God."

One of Obama's early mentors in the Alinsky method was Mike Kruglik, who had this to say to an interviewer of The New Republic, about Obama:

"He was a natural, the undisputed master of agitation, who could engage a room full of recruiting targets in a rapid-fire Socratic dialogue, nudging them to admit that they were not living up to their own standards. As with the panhandler, he could be aggressive and confrontational. With probing, sometimes personal questions, he would pinpoint the source of pain in their lives, tearing down their egos just enough before dangling a carrot of hope that they could make things better."

The agitator's job, according to Alinsky, is first to bring folks to the "realization" that they are indeed miserable, that their misery is the fault of unresponsive governments or greedy corporations, then help them to bond together to demand what they deserve, and to make such an almighty stink that the dastardly governments and corporations will see imminent "self-interest" in granting whatever it is that will cause the harassment to cease.

In these methods, euphemistically labeled "community organizing," Obama had a four-year education, which he often says was the best education he ever got anywhere."

Um, committing an act that may very well result in the theft of another person's identity is pretty doggone serious, in my book. What he did wasn't really "hacking"; he used a system to hijack a person's private e-mail account.

If he's 20 years old and has been computer / tech savvy, then he knew better. He knew very well that this was not right. And he did it anyhow.

Call me soft but I'm not so sure the hacker deserves jail time. If he has no criminal record and this was an isolated incident, and if noone was seriously hurt, then he may deserve only a substantial fine and community service.

..no worries. There ain't a chance in heck he'll receive more then a slight slap to the wrist.

After reading the MSM, I need a bottle of wine.

Those big plastic gallon-size bladder brands work good.

re: #387 SouthAmericanWay

Just to remind everyone, it all began with the Democratic Party's file on Palin, which included not only her Social Security number (as many may remember), but also this Yahoo e-mail address:

The "Hacker" Got Palin's Yahoo Account from the Democrats' Release of Her Personal Information -- With an Assist from the Washington Post

Remember when the Democrats improperly released that big file on Palin containing much of her personal information? Including most of her Social Security number?

They released Palin's Yahoo account identification, and the Washington Post printed it. On September 10th.

The Wash Post "journalist" Karl Vick was one of dozens sent to Alaska. His contribution was the travel smear 9/9, and a small anti-Palin protest 9/13 here in addition to the release of her yahoo email
