Some thoughts on the financial crisis.
Oil increasing by a factor of 6 in less than 15 months was a global blow to growth, it was the inevitable slip into recession that sent everything into freefall. Coupled with a war and several industries that never quite recovered from 9-11 and we are in the perfect storm.
Going forward, there are some smart things that need to happen with regards to financial institutions. First we need to restore the regional/state banks that were rolled up in mergers to give us the very institutions that were supposed to be "too big to fail." It turns out they were too big to let fail and we will be paying it off for a long time. Bank should be allowed to operate any number of branches in up to 4 contiguous states. All national banks can have up to 10 business offices in every state with up to 30 in in California, Florida and Texas. This arrange does several things- it restores post depression State based banking while fostering national competition. It is also advisable to re-establish the old interbank syndication of larger loans, this will force large financings to pass multiple risk analysis desks and share risk among institutions.
The next major change is to require insurance premiums to be paid by buyers in transactions and charge higher premiums for riskier transactions. Options and derivatives are not wrong top create, what is wrong is not to require purchasers of securities to pay a premium to a national investor protection fund that guarantees investors' holdings against messes like the one we are now seeing.
Savings, we need to build up more our wealth into savings accounts. Making the interest on the first 100,000 in savings accounts tax free will give a valuable advantage to basic savings and incentivize people people to not borrow up to their eyeballs.
We have experienced a humbling lesson over the last couple of weeks, we are not out of the woods yet. The good news is that even if the whole thing does melt into the sewers, the human capital of this nation will allow us to rebuild. I hope it never comes to that but we remain the wealthiest society in human history but we need to manage our affairs better.

Damn, that is good stuff. I like this best:
First we need to restore the regional/state banks
There is this dementia going around these days that "globalization" equals "centralization." We see it in the EU, we see it in any number of things. Clue bat: centralization tends toward monopoly, and monopoly ossifies. What's needed, as always, is healthy competition. That applies to banks, to business, and even to nations. Let a number of models exist, compete, and may the best one win.

McCain and Palin need to help the American people draw the connections between, sub-prime cheap money, Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac the democrats favorite charity organizations. Chris Dodd and Barney Frank protected these two agencies from reform --- want proof ? Go visit Stockton Calif where most of the foreclosures are in the state from bad loans to mostly lower income people who thought nothing of buying homes they could not afford with the help of the Fannie and Freddie Democrat Welfare plan...

What a charming Obama fan!
Dallas Mavericks' Josh Howard disrespects national anthem
In a video posted on YouTube, the swingman is shown at Allen Iverson's charity flag football game in July. When the national anthem is being sung, various participants are shown mugging for the camera. When the camera gets to Howard, he says: " 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on. I don't celebrate this [expletive]. I'm black."
Howard goes on to make a difficult-to-discern comment that includes a reference to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

No, but if she's not getting rattled by any of them, then those gotcha's aren't going to have much of an effect and the transparency of those attempts becomes all the clearer.
I think the more gotchas attempted the better - toughens her up for 4+ years more of this nonsense. If McCain's people have done a good job vetting, there's no there there. And it exposes the media's bias even further.
I don't actually mind having a hostile media, if they're fair. That helps keep everyone on their toes and makes sure everyone is doing their job.

One thought before I duck out:
Time was, "frontier" was a shorthand for the virtues that were considered to be essentially American.
Alaska is the closest thing to a frontier we still have. Yet it is precisely the fact that Sarah Palin is from this frontier area that her opponents are trying to use against her. "Small population," "hick mayor," "unfamiliar with the Big World," "unsophisticated": these are all ways in which her embodiment of the American frontier and its virtues are being belittled.
Will this be the election in which America overtly rejects its frontier roots for its landscaped roots in a planned suburban subdivision?
I live in a subdivision. It's been recently landscaped by the famous Carribbean blowhard, Ike.
So what part of my frontier heritage is at risk?

I am just saying that not all of her interviews should be hard ones.
I think that all of the candidates should have hard, soft and medium interviews. It lets you see how they react in each one.
For instance, if she was one way with Hannity and then a total shrew with Couric that would tell me that she can't handle the heat.
Compare and contrast.
I think she responded in the same manner with her first interview, although you could tell she was more nervous (as anyone would be in their first national interview) as she did in this interview.
In other words, she is who she is.

Way OT, Sharmuta, just got that book you recommended on fascism today, will dig into it.
Dianna, from your postings on the Russian threads, I'm pretty sure you'd find this interesting, I just got a copy from the library. Written by educated soldier in the Russian army during the Chechen war, it confirms everything bad we think about the modern Russian army. Miserably led, corrupt to the core, stealing and selling arms and ammunition on the black market, etc. What I found interesting is the modern Russian Army's reliance on "contract soldiers", the paramilitary types we saw in Georgia. They're consciously trying to copy what they see as a professional US military, but are ending up with criminals and thugs of all types instead and their behavior shows themto have more in common with Attilla the Hun rather than professional Western, volunteer militaries.

What's this I'm hearing about Obiden mouthing off about taxes today?
In an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," Biden said wealthier taxpayers would indeed pay more under the proposals of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Under his plan, people earning more than $250,000 a year would pay more in taxes while those earning less — the vast majority of taxpayers — would receive a tax cut.
"We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people," Biden said. Of those who would pay more, he said: "It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut."

McCain and Palin are making a huge mistake blaming Wall Street for these failures of poorly managed and run companies.
Not terribly surprising to see McCain doing it, but if Reagan is Palin's hero, she needs to start emulating him more. He saw the nation through some very painful economic times in the early '80's and stayed the course. Too bad Bill had to be the one to benefit from the results.

the whole problem of this "bad debt" crisis is that it is being brought to a head by what I think are artificial time constraints. Even assuming that most of the real-estate that was bought with subprime loans was overvalued at the time of purchase, given some time, it may turn into fairly-valued real-estate.
The whole problem has been accelerated / exacerbated by the newly-introduced mark-to-market rules and the mistrust between financial institutions. It is a huge mess, but does not have to result in further implosion.

Katie Couric is as big of a democrat hack as Gibson. Don't be fooled.
Undeniably, but Katie is weaker than Charlie. Call me crazy, but I think Katie, in spite of herself, will be charmed by Palin. Just a hunch.
Or to put it another way: maybe Katie, in contrast to Charlie, is at least perceptive enough realize that trying to take down Palin is a losing cause, and will break ranks.

Except everyone is trying to liquidate now. Of course most house-debtors trying to sell are completely delusional about market price. Just read about it at:
your point about the fact that "everyone is trying to liquidate now" is taken - that is my point, too. The solution is not to *force* everyone to liquidate before everyone else (that creates a meltdown scenario).
IF (and It's a BIG if) the owners of "toxic" mortgage paper would take a bit of a haircut and let terms be stretched-out, then we might actually see a more orderly unwinding of this credit bubble. To everyone's benefit except that "naked" short sellers.

Can somebody tell me what it means to "sell short - naked"?
From Wikipedia:
Naked short selling, or naked shorting, is the practice of selling a stock short without first borrowing the shares or ensuring that the shares can be borrowed as is done in a conventional short sale. When the seller does not then obtain the shares within the required time frame, the result is known as a "fail to deliver."

re: #13 Ayatollah Ghilmeini
You almost have my vote for SecTres. Now, since the congress critters have been constantly pushing off the in-pending doom into the future what is your solution for ~2014 when both Medicare and Social Security are in negative territory?

Both were kept seperate from our personal account. If we communicated with officials from other communities about non official stuff, we could not use the official account. If we used the unofficial account for emergency reasons we had to post a copy to the official account as well.
It appears that Palin was in a similar boat. Had she used the state official account for family or personal business she would be in trouble. The asshacker needs his gonads handed to him on a charred stick. Investigation is the duty of law enforcement not nutjobs.

Denver college professor assigns students to write essay critical of Palin...
Welcome to the left-wing indoctrination factory. It's called college.
The rest of the story:
Metro State College is investigating a professor who asked students to write an essay critical of Republican vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin. One student said the instructor singled out Republican students in the class and allowed others to ridicule them.
"I was shocked, I was holy cow, this is just an open door for him to discuss politics with us," said Jana Barber, a student in the class.
Barber shared the first class assignment with CBS4 Wednesday. Instructor Andrew Hallam asked students to write an essay to contradict what he called the 'fairy tale image of Palin' presented at the Republican National Convention.
"What the faculty's responsibility is to provide opportunity for critical thinking and civic engagement so bringing something of relevancy into the classroom was the faculty's goal," said Cathy Lucas, spokeswoman for Metro State. "Should he have broadened it and included all the political figures, yes."
Metro State officials are investigating claims of bias, harassment and bullying.

You think we have it bad?
What Russia’s stockmarket collapse means for Russia and for its neighbours
Partly as a result of the storm hitting all emerging markets (see article) and partly because of jumpy nerves following the war with Georgia, the markets in Moscow have been crashing. On September 17th and 18th the authorities halted trading in shares and bonds after the benchmark RTS share index fell 21% earlier in the week. It is down nearly 60% since its peak in May. The finance ministry pledged $60 billion to prop up the banking system; much of it seems to have gone offshore.

re: #345 Intrepid
Can somebody tell me what it means to "sell short - naked"?
In classic short-selling, you Intrepid has to borrow 100 shares of BigCorp from Mandy in order to sell them to itellu3times. Sometime later, Intrepid buys 100 shares of BigCorp on the open market, and returns them to Mandy, who being very sweet, has not even charged you for the honor. In fact, they way this works, the broker does the deed, and Mandy doesn't even know she's been sweet. Sweet, huh?
So, if BigCorp has 1,000,000 shares, at most 1,000,000 shares of BigCorp can be sold short at one time (though they can be sold fifty times a day!).
In naked short selling, Intrepid can sell 100 shares of BigCorp to itellu3times without even borrowing them from Mandy or hardly telling BigCorp about it at all. So, if Intrepid is very, um, Intrepid, he can sell 100,000,000 shares of BigCorp for pennies to all in the land, just out of the goodness of his heart. Of course, now BigCorp is unhappy that their stock is selling for pennies, and nobody quite knows why! Everyone panics, BigCorp now sells for 1 penny/share, Intrepid finally closes out the transaction when he buys 100,000,000 shares at 1 penny/share that he sold for 3 pennies/share, and laughs all the way to the bank - which unfortunately is now closed.
The End

The way I look at it, people used to come to my house to discuss official city policy with me. They felt comfortable doing so. Is there a crime in talking to non official people in a relaxed location? I see none. Assassination Press has no business publishing anything stolen from Palins personal account. Good analogy. That's exactly why they just need to enforce the naked shorting law that's been on the books for at least 75 years.
Unless they have to physically borrow the shares, it's not hard to imagine a few heavy hitters actually short selling more shares than the entire float! Which would, of course, drive the share price into the ground and any legitimate buying counterpoint would be absolutely futile.

I have 12 pairs of the exact same socks! Take that! Infernal sock stealing machine! Have to re-stock every year or so. Throw away 7 socks when I give up.
There's some physics theorizing behind this. Some speculate that an air bubble gets caught in the toe of the sock, causing it to float to the top. Then the spin cycle hits and off it goes with the water over the top lip, powered by centrifugal force. Out with the water, and down the drain.

One out of two is doing well.
I remember that one of the worst classes I had there was an entry level biology class with a crazy moon bat who spent most of his class time hating Reagan.
Actually the other class I had that last semester was Western Civ. First time I Watched "All Quiet on the Western Front". Very moving film. One thing I distinctly remember from that time was I woke up with a bad back, could hardly move, yet I forced myself to go to class and do my exam. Had to suck it up.

My deep thought on the financial mess before bedtime.
A lot of people who couldn't afford houses got greedy and "bought" them. Others leveraged their homes to the hilt for boats, other luxuries, granite counter tops, etc. and got caught out when it all went to hell. A lot of people were greedy, a lot of businesses were greedy, and congress aided and abetted all of them.
It seems like it would be easier if we all lived within our means. I KNOW I'm reading too much into it, but if you watch that free credit report dot com commercial (and if you watch cable, you can't NOT see it)--the second most recent one, with the bike--the idiot hippie is singing about FINANCING a one-speed bike. Everything I've seen of Palin on Youtube and C-Span before August, i.e. her interviews in Alaska, her performance at the gubernatorial debates etc. have been great.
So I am a bit disappointed with her two interviews so far.
Specifically, she should:
1.) Stop saying "also" so often.
2.) Stop saying too much in these interviews, i.e. trying to impress.
3.) Stop using soundbites from her RNC acceptance speech. It's wearing a bit thin.
Don't get me wrong, I think she's a terrific candidate, I just wish she would revert back to the way she handled interviews etc. before 8/29. Yes, its a different stage for her now but that shouldn't bother her.

If you listen to it, it seems clear (at least to me) that he was basically trying to say that all this wonderful volunteerism will make us more "secure", by making everyone like us more, etc. etc. Of course, he says even THAT wrong, and mixes it all up when talking about "recruiting" and "calling to service", not to mention throwing in "doubling our Foreign Service" - uh, Foreign Service officers aren't "volunteers", Barry, they're paid.
It's a hash of foggy ideas, as usual, but I really don't read anything in it REMOTELY like the "he's gonna arm gangbangers to be the Obama Brown Shirts!" hysteria I've seen here from time to time.

Once upon a time I knew how to link up 2 computers using STR (synchronous transmit receive) so they could talk to each other.

Saw an article on Yahoo a month or so ago. "Surprising places to buy appliances". What was the surprise? Lowes and Home Depot. But made me very happy to hear..."but Sears goes above and beyond any of the above companies listed when it comes to any problems."
Paraphrasing, but, loves me some Sears.

Call Sears....should be at least as effective or more effective then top loader...particularly if it is new. Replaced a very good machine that wore out this year with the front loader...thought I was at the airport in a jet taking off...sounds like a jet engine in the spin cycle....and dry, very dry. And if I use hot water, even more so.

The producers of the IRA drama "Fifty Dead Men Walking" have taken the unusual step of distancing themselves from incendiary comments made by the film's star, Rose McGowan.
The actress caused a stir at the Toronto Film Festival last week when she said she would have joined the Irish Republican Army had she lived in Belfast during the Troubles. She said she could understand why people turned to violence during that time in Northern Ireland.

Here are two thoughts on that.
1. It would take an incredible amount of money to purposely attack any one of these companies, much less the lot of them. And an incredible amount of nerve, because results were not at all guaranteed. Say, $100m/day, for a week or three, per company. Tens of billions of dollars put at risk.
2. The failure of these institutions involves another incredible amount of money, quickly building towards a trillion dollars. This money has effectively vanished. One has to wonder if and when it will reappear.
Meanwhile, it is being replenished by diluting the dollar, a tax on us all.

Jennifer Rubin at Commentary had this to say about the Palin disinvite:
Biden’s Refusal to Appear At Iran Protest Caused the Disinvitation of Palin
Here’s the latest news on the withdrawal of the invitation to Sarah Palin (and all other politicians) to Monday’s protest of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — withdrawn by the sponsor, the Council of Presidents of Major Jewish Organization. COMMENTARY has learned that Joe Biden was invited to the event in the wake of Hillary Clinton’s refusal to appear on the same stage as Palin — and he declined. In an e-mail to me, Biden spokesman David Wade said that “we’ve had longstanding commitment to speak at National Guard Convention on Monday in Maryland.”
After that, the decision was made to disinvite Palin — who is, let us recall, the chief executive of one of the 50 state of the union as well as the vice-presidential candidate of one of the two major parties in the United States. According to Ben Smith of Politico:
The appearance that the non-partisan group was aligning with the Republican ticket put the group and its president, Malcolm Hoenlein, under heavy pressure from Jewish Democrats, including members of the conference, members of Congress, and the liberal group J Street, not to give Palin a platform, sources said. Hoenlein told the McCain campaign that he would have to rescind Palin’s invitation or cancel the rally.
The question is: Was Hoenlein put in this position because of a decision by the Obama team and its supporters to treat Sarah Palin as though she were not a legitimate political figure with whom major Democratic politicians can or should share the stage. The McCain camp has issued a statement in the candidate’s name:

You may need to have the cable co recycle the router and assign you a new IP address.
No - when I did this, the router has an IP address (or something) - I had to do this when I set up my router and although I was completely confused by the whole process, eventuallyit worked LOL. We have 3 computers and I had to do it for each one.

You need to call the cable company and tell them what the cable modem/router MAC address is.

So it's sorta curious - talking about AmeriCorp and Peace Corps and a Civilian National Security force as powerful etc. as the military so we don't have to expect the military to do everything.
I actually wonder how the hell it ever got into a draft of his speech in the first place; I mean who wrote it and what was he/she or they thinking?

I am to lazy to log in. When I got the new modem and could not connect, I called the cable company. One of their techs had me try a number of things and finally had me wire the modem directly to the computer. He said I would have to call NetGear to get them to reset the router or do something to get the router compatible with the new modem.

Aaaargh! Missed your post.
Not from the cable company...but the modem is, as the old one was acting very weird. The router is a NetGear router.
From "acting very weird," I get that you are personalizing your hardware in an anthropomorphic fashion. Therefore, call the cable company. :D BUT - have something to do while you are on hold.

re: #754 itellu3times
Good evening - I've been sorta wondering all week about the economy and how it seems to have had the wheels fall off at the same time.
I honestly DON'T think it's any sort of conspiracy. Look at Fannie and Freddie - thanks to the Community Redevelopment Act passed by Carter and "reinvigorated" by Clinton, lots and LOTS of poor credit risks were encouraged (and a lot of the encouragement came from the mortgage brokers) to sue lenders who wouldn't give them a mortgage, some "enterprising" youngish brokers thought geez, ya know if you apply some rigorous forms rules (as to documents) ya could either sell 'em by the bushelful to Fannie/Freddie OR bundle them up in pools, and issue bonds GUARANTEED by those pools of mortgage loans - that way you can sell those bonds at a lower rate of return(because they are, after all, guaranteed by the mortgage pools) and make a killing on the spread. And hey, while we're at it, lets get AIG to insure those bonds based on those mortgage pools.
And so it came to pass for nigh on a decade that this crap went on - folks who really didn't understand homeownership (whaddya mean I gotta pay for the heat, the roof - the plumbing!) coupled with tons of lender's violating what USED to be FDIC rules in the aftermath of the S&L Scandals of the early 90's about lenders giving out home equity lines of credit second mortgages on property the simulataneously made first, purchase money mortgages on, but which rules were "relaxed" as long as home values were inflated and sooner or later, all the dominoes would fall - the homeowners, the lenders, the bond issuers and the insurers (primarily AIG but not exculsively) - and go BOOM!
As pissed off as I am about the investment bankers, mortgage brokers and all, and as much damage has been done to retirement funds and IRA's, think about this: the weaker dollar REALLY screws over the Chinese and the United Arab Emirates and other middle eastern investors who invested a buck and will now, if they are lucky, will get repaid at something siginifcantly less than a buck.

Palin isn't against creationist beliefs. She's against using the power of the State to put those beliefs into science courses. There's just no scientific case at all for creationism. The State wants children educated, but religious education is not the work of the State. The government can stick to teaching English, math, history, and scientific science, and butt out of teaching religion.
Isn't this a good clean conservative position on the subject? And what does Sarah have to do, to establish the sincerity of her faith? Isn't her willingness to carry Trig to term proof enough?

Scared the snot out of me, but I didn't think much of it at the time. Was John Birch into logical progression?
I gather he was capable of logical thinking when given a clue. A story you won't come across in the John Birch Society literature (if they're still around?)--
"The" John Birch was given an OSS 2nd Lieutenant commission (US Army) in WWII basically because he'd been a missionary in China, and as you'll recall, the Allies were very involved in fighting the Japanese there.
As fate would have it, one day 2nd Lt Birch wandered into a US Army quonset hut in Middle of Nowhere, northern Burma and saw that there were a number of army officers playing --God forbid-- poker! Gambling no less, actual money on the table, and heaven forbid, can that be liquor in those bottles?
Lt. Birch raced over to the table, turned it over, and started in on saving the gamblers' souls with his best Hellfire and Damnation sermon. Sadly he was interrupted by an uncouth army captain, who punched Birch's lights out without waiting for the Amen.
Birch sorta vanished into history at that point, bearing with him the logical lesson that thou shalt not interrupt the captain's poker games. Especially when the captain is winning and has just filled a straight flush. (Whatever the Chinese commies whacked Birch for, it wasn't for rudely interrupting games of chance, I'm sure.)
The captain went on to meet another lieutenant, a tall blonde nurse anesthetist at the new field hospital up the road a ways.
Captain A, USAAF, and Captain M, USANC, married after the war and went on to have two sons, my brother and I. And yes, Dad still snuck out of the house occasionally for a poker game somewhere, even with Mom not entirely approving. Time's caught up with both of them, sadly, but they're still together in a nice veterans' cemetery, adjoining plots.
