Taheri: Obama 101

World | Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 2:00:56 pm PDT

Amir Taheri has a piece about his article on the Obama campaign’s discussions with Iraqi leaders: Obama 101.

At a meeting with Senator Hillary Clinton in Washington, I asked what she thought of the Bush administration’s negotiations with the Iraqis concerning security cooperation. She said she would not second-guess the president and would wait for the outcome of the negotiations. In a statesmanlike manner, Senator Clinton reminded me of the golden rule—one that is common to all mature democracies where the opposition is loyal and constitutional.

Today, Senator Obama is the leader of a loyal opposition in the United States, not the chief of an insurrection or a revolutionary uprising. What we are witnessing in the U.S. is an election, not an insurrection or a coronation, even less a regime change.

Obama should not have discussed the government-to-government negotiations with the Iraqis. That he did, surprised the Iraqis no end. Raising the issue with them, especially the way he did, meant that he was telling them that he did not trust his own government. The Iraqis could not be blamed for wondering why they should trust a government that is not trusted by the leader of its own loyal opposition. (There was also no point in raising the matter, because Obama did not know the content of the negotiations.)

An opposition leader’s foreign trips are useful as fact-finding missions. This means that the opposition leader listens to the locals, asks questions, and tries to get the political feel of the place. He is not there to lecture the natives or bad-mouth his own government back home.

Crap like this (be it in international politics or in my own office) makes it hard to have the moral fortitude to continue operating above board and with integrity. Just posted this to Typicalwhitey before the new thread went up. I like this part.

Obama might have attended a session of the new Iraqi parliament and congratulated the people of Iraq for defying death to go through one referendum and two general elections to build a new democracy.

He might have visited some of the good work done by over 1.2 million Americans, both military and civilian, who have heroically served in Iraq since its liberation.

He might have visited some of the wounded victims of terrorism, both U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians, to comfort them, and assure them of continued U.S. determination to fight the forces of evil.

He did none of those things during his eight-hour photo-op visit.

30 formercorpsman  Fri, Sep 19, 2008 2:10:30pm

In some way, I am glad some Iraqi leadership was able to deal with this head on.

I think often times, much of what gets picked up overseas for reporting and consumption is the regurgitation of the drivel here, and in Europe.

Having to arrive at the conclusion, that somehow your struggling attempt at democracy and freedom just might become political fodder for another's struggle at power.

At the very least, this brings a middle eastern country into the fold of what we are potentially all up against in the immediate future.

Yes. That's right. The modern progressive left-wing Democrat does not trust his own government. However, They DO trust Saul Alinsky and Noam Chomsky and Air America.

Left-wingers are in love with themselves. They see themselves are perfect entities entitled to power and they are willing to subvert anything to achieve that power - even if it means backstabbing.

NASA to hold press conference on state of Sun

WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a media teleconference Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 12:30 p.m. EDT, to discuss data from the joint NASA and European Space Agency Ulysses mission that reveals the sun's solar wind is at a 50-year low. The sun's current state could result in changing conditions in the solar system.

Ulysses was the first mission to survey the space environment above and below the poles of the sun. The reams of data Ulysses returned have changed forever the way scientists view our star and its effects. The venerable spacecraft has lasted more than 17 years - almost four times its expected mission lifetime.

The panelists are:
-- Ed Smith, NASA Ulysses project scientist and magnetic field instrument investigator, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
-- Dave McComas, Ulysses solar wind instrument principal investigator, Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio
-- Karine Issautier, Ulysses radio wave lead investigator, Observatoire de Paris, Meudon, France
-- Nancy Crooker, Research Professor, Boston University, Boston, Mass.

17 years of observations - and they are calling a press conference on "changing conditions in the solar system."

Prediction : global cooling on its way - buy a coat and maybe one of those cheap houses in Riverside, CA.

McCain said Friday that Obama will “leave this country at risk,” and he said multiple times that Obama will not put country first.

“People like Senator Obama have been too busy gaming the system and haven’t ever done a thing to actually challenge the system. Thats not country first, that’s Obama first,” McCain said.

I think there was a poll some months ago at the AKC and it was decided he should have a poodle.

Poodles are smart; they'd see right through him. But they are very loyal, so maybe.
On the other hand, standard poodles are retrievers even if the AKC doesn't think so.
When he loses, and WAB divorces him because he can't do anything for her (children) any more, he can get a yappy toy poodle and name it Michele.

The Obama family may be adding a dog to their household for the first time, but Republican nominee John McCain is ahead of the pack with 24 pets, including four dogs. Therefore, animal lovers may be ready to help him "fetch" the election. According to a recent Associated Press survey,"pet owners favor McCain over Obama 42 percent to 37 percent, with dog owners particularly in McCain's corner."

I am, too. Historically, before Imperial Russia became (a) Imperial, (b) expansionist, and therefore (c) dangerous, the country everyone else in Europe worried about (besides Prussia) was Poland. Tough military, and as Tom Clancy observed (in The Hunt For Red October) always a class act in the intelligence business. And it was a Polish king, John Sobiewski, who kicked the Muslims' slats at Vienna.

Of course, I have it on good authority (from a friend who is damned proud of his Polish heritage) that the Poles themselves were the originators of a lot of such jokes. He says that it was a very effective way to get other countries to underestimate them. Then, whammo.

My guess is that they'll be just as tacky. I keep calling stainless the "harvest gold of the 2000s". Black and white are the only classic colors for kitchen appliances.

IIRC free Poles were heavily responsible for cracking Enigma.

Exactly. The "bombes", the calculating machines that were used at Bletcheley Park to run the numbers that were fed to Colossus, Alan Turing's mainframe computer, were Polish designed, the initial six plus plans being smuggled out of Poland through Sweden before the country fell to the Germans and Russians.

Several of the early British SOE (Special Operations Executive) shortwave radio transceivers used in occupied France and Europe by resistance groups were designed and built by Polish experts, as well, working at the RCA plant at Letchworth. The B.P. 3 and A.P. 4 transceivers, the ones produced in the greatest numbers for the clandestine services, were the most advanced radio units of their day, being both the most powerful and most compact radios of their type in the world. The British considered them superior to any of their "home-grown" designs, including the famous Paraset, which was an excellent unit itself.

Senator Edward Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, even Hillary Clinton get the "golden rule" of politics. Obama doesn't get it.

then again - Obama and his angry "doesn't get it" left have been trying to back stab the war effort for years.

I think you can leave Sen Kennedy off that list as he was dealing with the Soviets behind Pres Reagan's back. Crank up the Way Back machine Sherman and use the archives from Hot Air which carry a story: The Kennedy KGB letter Updated with info about the NIE leak:

"...That document is a memo regarding an offer made by Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts via former Senator John Tunney, both Democrats, to the General Secretary of the Communist Party, USSR, Yuri Andropov, in 1983. The offer was to help the Soviet leadership, military and civilian, conduct a PR campaign in the United States as President Ronald Reagan sought re-election. The goal of the PR campaign would be to cast President Reagan as a warmonger, the Soviets as willing to peacefully co-exist, and thereby turn the electorate away from Reagan. It was a plan to enlist Soviet help, and use the American press, in unseating an American president..."

re: #220 Outrider

By trying to second-guess the present administration in its negotiations with Iraq, Obama ignored a golden rule of American politics. I first learned about that rule from Senator Edward Kennedy more than 30 years ago. During a visit to Tehran, Kennedy received a few Iranian reporters for a poolside chat. The big question at the time was negotiations between Washington and Tehran about massive arms contracts. When we asked Kennedy what he thought of those negotiations, his answer was simple: He would not comment on negotiations between his government and a foreign power, especially when abroad. That, he said, was one of the golden rules of American politics.

Taken for the article Charles posted. Of course it's just one example involving Iran.

Why do they have polls for likely and registered voters? Do people actually say they are registered but may not vote? So the Gallup registered poll today has Obama ahead but the likely voter poll is tied. I don't get it. Why not just have one poll. Has anyone here been polled and were you a likely voter. What question determines the likely voter other than the obvious. Do they ask questions as to why you may not vote? Just wondering ...

And 10 years ago they wanted to approve me for 2-3x what I thought I could pay. The brokers also only wanted to show us houses at those prices. Then one made a mistake in calculation, showed us ones I felt that I could afford, and we bought one. I'm paying half the average rent in the area, property taxes are low for the area as well (and we just voted to keep them that way, but I did vote for the extra $100 or less a year to keep the police and fire departments staffed better).
And I'm sure the house is worth twice what we paid.

I waited 30 yrs to buy a house. Now my house payment is equal to my car payment.

Unfortunately, a few years ago, I was without a well-paying job for 20 months, and I'm still paying off the debt from that. (I did find some low-paid part-time teaching positions)
But if I had gone for a more expensive house, we'd be in Casa Cardboard now.

Sixty-four percent of U.S. citizens age 18 and over voted in the 2004 presidential election, up from 60 percent in 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. Tables from a November survey also show that of 197 million citizens, 72 percent (142 million) reported they were registered to vote. Among those registered, 89 percent (126 million) said they voted. In the 2000 election, 70 percent of citizens were registered; and among them, 86 percent voted

Registered, and likely to vote are different things.

I've been polled a number of times. First they ask if you're registered, then they ask how likely you are to vote in November. I would answer "I will vote even if I have to rise from my deathbed to do it," but I usually just say "very likely." Lots of people register when they get a drivers license or a library card, then forget about it.

And - something you don't catch from the media's airbrushed portraiture - he oozes aggressive, arrogant vibes, seems to be suppressing a lot of anger...I think he could be BAD NEWS for America. re: #260 FrogMarch

Behold: the unhinged left.

snip...

According to a friend of mine who is from the Big Apple (born and bred and now living and working here in the wilds of central OH), there are two kinds of New Yorkers.

The first kind are like him. They have the accent, the attitude, and the "don't mess with me" look. They're the city workers, the nine-to-fivers, the cops, the firemen, the doctors, nurses, teachers, you name it- the people who make a city work. They generally like people like Governor Palin, because they see her as one of them. (He likes her and McCain both, BTW.)

The other kind of New Yorker is the kind he calls "New Yorker New Yorkers". Defined as the kind of people who read, write, and appear in ads in, the New Yorker magazine.

Have you ever looked at the models in their ads? Every one, without exception, has a disinterested, almost hostile look on their face, as if saying to the readers,

I am far above you in every way imaginable. How dare you even look upon my perfection?

And the rest of the magazine reflects this. Even the covers, where it is entirely normal to see a cartoon of a woman smiling as she leans on a pet-shop window- looking at babies for sale. The sign even says, "Babies". (Translation; children are an accessory and a fashion statement, not actually people.)

The pages of the New Yorker (and yes, I read it every week) are full of this sort of shrillness on virtually every subject. But they wax especially psychotic on the subject of Those Unnatural Monsters Who Have Dared To Challenge The Messiah Obama.

My friend does not read the New Yorker. He says that it is written by, and for, the trust-fund babies, models, artists, and other "trendy types" who are the main reason that he is now an Ohioan. Because thanks to them, the Big Apple is no longer a good place to be, in his estimation.

And these are the people who are quoted in this article. Who do not realize that their contempt for those they regard as 'peasants' will, one day, come back to bite them on their patrician backsides.

And this November is when they may just feel the chomp.

cheers

eon

No mystery there. You thought it looked good, because it DID look good.

It's not like we really know something objectively true about colors now that we didn't know then!

There's a method to the madness. There is an under-the-radar group that sort of "decides" what colors are going to be the latest fad from year to year. Highly influential, whether it's kitchen appliances, clothes, cars, house paint, just about anything. Seems to have started up in the early 60's, which is basically when we started seeing Harvest Gold and Avocado Green and all that:

OK. Somebody has to say it, and since nobody else will do it, I guess it'll have to be me.

Barack Obama, each day, appears more and more to me as a "deep sleeper", stealth terrorist, sent here most likely from his college Pakistan days specifically to worm his way into the highest office possible and inflict fatal damage on America, the Great Satan.

I'm not a conspiracy nut. I don't belong to any militias or rabid right-wing action groups. My background is very middle of the road, and I'm a respected member of my community. But I can no longer listen to an unending string of both his dangerous associations, and his even more dangerous presumptuous actions, and avoid my conclusion: he intends great for this country.

He cannot be let off in politically correct conversation as just another liberal elitist. He appears to have designs, a plan. He's not even waiting for the formalities of an election. His plan is in fact in motion already. The family, the church, the entourage are all "cover", well planned cover.

We are in great danger.

The United States controlled the area that Weyland-Yutani was mainly interested in. Hence, when the s#!t came down on LV-426, the U.S. Marines went in.

As a New Yorker, I can tell you that I love all hard-working New Yorkers with honest jobs. But the New Yorker magazine was ruined decades ago by Tina Brown after it was acquired by Conde Nast. She added layers of English condescension and class consciousness that hadn't existed before. And she abandoned any pretense of literary seriousness in favor of a frivolous, pseudo-modern, gossipy, liberal style.

When I see people reading the New Yorker on the subway, I know that they're usually impressionable tourists with literary pretensions. Too bad the New Yorker no longer delivers for them, and that they don't even realize it! ;-)

I like you, Wrath, but you know you can't just put up info like that without backing it up. Has the Bush administration lied about Obama's involvement in this meeting?

Oh....

The politico staff

Why would you give msm political hacks any consideration? What do they know? McCain has come out swinging with how many new ads today? Give them a chance to work. Sounds to me like the hacks at politico want to dampen any enthusiasm we might have from seeing McCain on the attack.

re: #411 willowone

msnbc link affirms this; Congress's authorization and that it was important that that there be strong bipartisan support for any agreement so that it can be sustained through a future administration. He argued+ it would make sense to hold off on such negotiations until the next administration+

and another curious paragraph

"My concern is that the Bush administration--in a weakened state politically--ends up trying to rush an agreement that in some ways might be binding to the next administration, whether it was my administration or Sen. McCain's administration," Obama said. "The foreign minister agreed that the next administration should not be bound by an agreement that's currently made[Link: firstread.msnbc.msn.com...]

Ah, but the last paragraph bothers me more. I mean, there are some treaties and agreements that presidents need to end (Bush did that with some of the old agreements with the USSR), but I would hope that Obama would see the administration trying to negotiate in good faith.
