Tech Note: Iconic Redesign

Science | Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 5:11:35 pm PDT

The icons for rating front page articles, comments, and spinoff links have been redesigned for a more consistent (yet colorful!) look.

And of course, once I started tweaking the rating buttons in Fireworks, I had to redesign the Favorites and Report icons as well, to make them match the style.

Be warned: some readers have reported a sudden desire for gumdrops upon seeing the new icons.

Charles, a music thread is called for......

Sing they can

Obama's presidential campaign is now getting an official soundtrack.

"Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement," which takes its title from an Obama campaign slogan, features Kanye West, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Wonder and others.

It will be available for sale only through his campaign Web site - $30 for a CD, $24.99 for a digital download.

/ or not......

20 BlueCanuck  Fri, Sep 19, 2008 5:23:29pm

Don't know if it's too late or not, but I missed all the fun in the earlier threads. Arrrrrrrrrr maties.

21 mamashawna  Fri, Sep 19, 2008 5:24:06pm

Repost from previous thread, just because I had such a great day:

Evening lizards! For all my fellow Puget Sounders/Washingtonians....Did the Puyallup today with the family. As soon as we dropped our boys at the rides, hubby and I headed to the Republican booth and loaded up on signs, buttons, and bumper stickers. My favorites: 'Re-elect Dino Rossi', and 'Republican- because not everyone can be on welfare'.

Anyway, carried my McCain/Palin sign around all day, and had 5 different people come up to me and ask where to get the sign. Told them EXACTLY where to go (booth number and all) in the new Americraft Showplex building that was built this past year. One elderly gentleman said 'Go Palin' as he walked away, and I replied with 'You got it!'.

he he he....Can's wait to see what happens on election day!

For those of you who don't know, check out [Link: [Link: www.thefair.com....]...] IIRC, it's the biggest state fair west of the Mississippi.

Did you catch this one out of a CBC commentator?

It's possible that Republican men, sexual inadequates that they are, really believe that women will vote for a woman just because she's a woman. They're unfamiliar with our true natures. Do they think vaginas call out to each other in the jungle night? I mean, I know men have their secret meetings at which they pledge to do manly things, like being irresponsible with their semen and postponing household repairs with glue and used matches. Guys will be guys, obviously.

[snip]

Doyle's job includes watching a lot of reality television and he's well-versed in the backstory. White trash — not trailer trash, that's something different — is rural, loud, proudly unlettered (like Bush himself), suspicious of the urban, frankly disbelieving of the foreign, and a fan of the American cliché of authenticity. The semiotics are pure Palin: a sturdy body, clothes that are clinging yet boxy and a voice that could peel the plastic seal off your new microwave

[snip]

Palin has a toned-down version of the porn actress look favoured by this decade's woman, the overtreated hair, puffy lips and permanently alarmed expression.

I'll have to check. She does have relatively thick fur, though.

Btw, the DNA test that I did has upgraded from 38 to 105 breeds. I just sent in a new sample today (at a reduced rate, as a repeat customer). Will be interesing to see what the new results are.

I was looking at the paperwork from the original one, and it indicated that since they only tested for the 38, if a primary contributor breed wasn't in the list, a breed farther back in the lineage might show up, which doesn't seem to have any relationship to the dog tested. I think that's how the Cocker Spaniel got in there. I can see Whippet in her face and in her speed...

Will know more in 4-6 weeks...

Mine honestly doesn't look fat, just big boned, so to speak. That said, I am going to cut back on her food some. I'm doing her like I did my last dog, which was just fill her (dry food) bowl up when it was empty. For years, I fed the last one out of a 25-lb of food free feeder, and she just ate what she wanted. Yes, McCain had to read the words, "I am a black air pirate" his captors wrote, after he broke down under torture.

That would be Tamron's new 28-300mm 3.6-6.3 XR Di VC (that's image stabilized for the non camera types). It's not all that much bigger than my old 28-300 lens from Sigma, and I can now handhold to 1 second with good sharpness, when anything above .3" would have resulted in a garbage shot.

Los Angeles blogger Juliette Ochieng has a lot in common with the man who might be the next president, Barack Obama. A lot.

Both were born to Kenyan fathers of the same tribe (the Luo) from the same province (Nyanza), and both of their fathers came as boys to America aboard the same airplane. Growing up, neither Ochieng nor Obama knew their fathers, who both abandoned their American mothers and left their American-born children behind. Both of their fathers returned to Africa in the early 1960s and became friends, bonding at Kenyan bars over their favorite drink — Scotch. Both Ochieng's and Obama's mothers contracted ovarian cancer. (Hers survived it; his did not). Both Ochieng and Obama were born in the U.S. in August 1961 — only weeks apart.

But for someone with parallel beginnings, Juliette Akinyi Ochieng is quite different: Evangelical Christian. Working class. Military veteran. Pro-life. Conservative Republican

SNIP

One spot he visited was the recently renamed Senator Obama Kogelo Secondary School in Nyang'oma-Kogelo, a village in equatorial western Kenya where Obama's roots go deep: His father, Barack Sr., was born there. His 86-year-old step-grandmother, Sarah, still lives there in a brick shanty with a tin roof and no running water.

Almost exactly two years ago, Barack Obama visited the school built upon land that, decades ago, Obama's grandfather donated. In anticipation of Obama's visit, the school changed its name to honor the village's most famous progeny, Barack Jr.

The school had only four classrooms. It lacked water, functioning bathrooms and even electricity. A third of its students were orphans. Its extreme need made Senator Obama's speech there all the more riveting for the village residents.

"Hopefully, I can provide some assistance in the future to this school and all that it can be," Obama said. Looking directly at the school's principal, Yuanita Obiero, and her teachers, he added, "I know you are working very hard and struggling to bring up this school, but I have said I will assist the school, and I will do so."

In the two years since, Obama has experienced a meteoric political rise, becoming the Democratic flag-bearer, authoring a best-seller and last year, with his wife, Michelle, earning $4.2 million. He bought a luxury home. Last year, he gave $240,000 to charities.

But apparently not to the Senator Obama Kogelo School. "Senator Obama has not honored the promises he gave me when we met in 2006 and in his earlier letter to the school," Principal Obiero has told the London-based, conservative tabloid EveningStandard. "He has not given us even one shilling. But we still have hope."

SNIP

Enter Baldilocks, who lives in a rough area of Los Angeles, is the caregiver for an elderly relative and worries, like most people, about her bills. She hasn't got millions and didn't attend an Ivy League school.

But she was embarrassed by her fellow Luo-American, Barack Obama. She rushed to fill the financial void, forming a California nonprofit to funnel money to the African school. With a flair for drama, she named it "Save Senator Obama Kogelo School" and held a mini fund-raiser. She's raised $3,500, so she's a long way from the $750,000 she wants to raise within two years.

Optics is not my strong suit, so I probably am getting the terminology all wrong. But basically: when light is shining, and you combine all colors in a beam of light, then yes white is the presence of all colors (i.e. as in starlight). In printed colors, or on objects that are perceived by us as possessing this or that color attribute, white is the absence of any other color (as in a blank canvas).

Makes for great caprese salads, too.

Now, to track and kill a bottle of wine.

BBL

Those are awesome! They're my older son's favorite. They're pretty easy to start from seed too. The only problem with them is they crack easily on the vine so you have to keep a close eye on them when it rains.

"Paper tigers"

re: #154 Racer X

Wow. Just friggin wow.

Thats all any of us will have if this moron gets elected. Hope. Maybe some change in our pockets.

Damn.

Have you read the whole thing? Baldilocks' story is amazing.

Added Ochieng, "I was raised a Muslim also ... but things change."

She speaks from experience. Long ago, Ochieng, her mom and her stepfather converted to Christianity, abandoning the Nation of Islam. Today, her stepfather is a Methodist preacher. And until the 2000 presidential election, Baldilocks was a Democrat.

There is irony in this: As much as she dislikes Obama's left-of-center politics and worries about his meteoric rise, she has benefited in a personal way: Media coverage of Obama's family unearthed information that gave her a window into her own, muddied origins.

Like Barack Sr., her father, Philip Ochieng, was one of Kenya's 81 best students, flown to America in 1959 during what was called the Mboya Airlift to study at U.S. universities and, it was then hoped, return to build their Kenyan homeland. The flight was financed by Martin Luther King Jr., Sidney Poitier, Jackie Robinson, Harry Belafonte and others.

Ochieng knew nothing of this. She has never met her father, now a writer in Africa. "I owe my existence to them," she says of the airlift's prominent financiers.

So does Barack Obama. But for Baldilocks, their links fall apart in real time. From her modest home in South-Central she has launched a small effort for a village she has never seen. If she embarrasses a presidential candidate she doesn't support, and earns the enmity of the black community, so be it.

HUH? Could you please leave out the big words, like "the", "or", "is"...LOL.

So, I assume that folks have heard by now that al Qaeda's Zawahiri's disembodied voice showed up on a video today. It had a few production issues - someone hacked the al Qaeda sites where the videos were supposed to show up, but they're here now. ABC says that US, German and Malaysian authorities helped thwart the distribution.

What'd he have to say? Well, his focus is on Egypt for starters. He makes note of the recent rockslide that killed nearly 100 people in Cairo earlier this month and the lame government response. I think that's pretty relevant. Zawahiri is Egyptian, and his focus on the Egyptian regime under Mubarak is quite noteworthy. I'd be watching for future attacks in Egypt to destablize the regime there.

Also, according to ABC:

Al Qaeda also showed a video it said was captured from a US bounty hunter, Keith "Jack" Idema, as he appeared to threaten to kill an Afghani citizen during an interrogation.

The US denies that Idema is a government agent, and the Afghan government sentenced him to prison.

A pirate walks into a pub with steering wheel sticking out of his fly. The bartender says to him, "Excuse me, but do you realize there is a steering wheel in your fly?"

The pirate says, "Aaarrrggghhh! It's drivin' me nuts!"

Interesting.

Link is to a Time article.

I am confused now. Did Obama abandon this school after pledging support? Or did he return to help open a new Science laboratory?

Something sounds fishy.

Old story, Obama visited once 15 years earlier or so, then shows up and cuts a ribbon and makes a speech promising to help. Then he leaves them hanging. In Obama'sor Biden's minds passing a bill that sends some other person's money around the world counts as charity on their part.

I have had no problem with Firefox and PDF.

I have been known, however, to click the wrong "x" and close down everything, rather than just the tab I wanted to close down.

SUGGESTION:
Go to tools, options, and
1) MAIN - for "startup" have selected "show my tabs from previous firefox session"
That way, when I close out everything by mistake, when I reopen I come back to exactly where I was before
2) TABS - choose this and select what how you want your tabs to work.

Well, if you're a guy, you would probably find her very attractive. Dark hair, typical fox babe, but absolutely tore this wild haired hag from this church a new one. Both my husband and I watched it, and both agreed we would not want to piss her off. Did a great job in calling bullshit on this gal. You might be able to look her up on the fox website.

I'll do the research, after all God does good work and I rarely get ladies really angry, well not real real angry. Maybe I better forget it.

As long as this is thread is "Redesign" oriented ... I have a suggestion:

How about a special background color for posts that exceed a certain number of up or down-dings?
Say "puke yellow-green" for down dings, "light pink" for updings?
It would make "pinheads and patriots" easily located.

Since that would amount to a single "if" evaluation, I'm thinking it wouldn't slow things down all that much.

Then again, Javascript/Ajax is not one of my stronger coding strengths.

Surfed from an earlier thread to a NYT piece on the Troll culture that was good. Annoying thing about that paper if it was all illiterate trash it would be easier to deal with. Anyhow I think we do (I hate to say this) need a law that makes it very clear that harassment fraud or malicious intrusion are crimes and that there is no right of privacy to impede an investigation. We need good technical means built in to the web to permit law enforcement to trace these creeps. I know I am about to get hit with a torrent of accusations that I would empower jack booted thugs but the more I think of the harm these deranged sociopaths can inflict the more I think we need to go after them.

Agreed. Those of us with nothing to hide have nothing to fear. My company monitors our internet activities, why can't law enforcement.

But I sometimes find Greta is "tone deaf" - someone says something that just begs for a follow-up question, but she already has her next question formed and so she moves on. Yes, but with reflected colors, white is the absence of all colors.

Aren't most colors, technically, reflected except for black? It's the wavelength that bounces back to your eye that gives an item color.  In white, all wavelengths bounce back, but in black no wavelength bounces back.  So black would be the absense of all colors, since no light bounces back from black.  The only colors that might not be reflected would be colors shined in your eyes through colored filters, like the red cap on a flashlight, and then only when shined in your eyes.  When shined on something else, again it's reflected light that gives your eye the color of something.
