Nashville Running Out of Gas?

US News | Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 7:18:17 pm PDT

Received from a reader in Tennessee:

Nashville was 85% out of fuel today. We will probably be completely dry by the end of tomorrow. Lines at stations are 50 cars deep in some places, if they even have gas.

Don't know, but I filled up my hybrid today in Memphis, so we're not running out that I know of. And that tank'll last about a week.

For God's sake, outlaw price gouging quick! That way, we can have Nashville 100% out of gas.

Supply and demand. There's a relationship between the two that many people simply refuse to understand.

It's like there's some relationship between supply, demand, and price. Somebody research this, quick!

Heh.

We had the same thing in Montgomery as Knoxville. Prices blipped up last weekend, but have come back down, mostly.

35 NC State of Mind  Fri, Sep 19, 2008 7:26:56pm

re: #4 Sharmuta

Why?

LeRoy said some Nashville stations had reported double their usual fuel sales volume for a week, since Hurricane Ike came ashore in Texas.

They had been watching Geraldoand Shepherd and took their sensationalism too seriously.

We ran out of gas here in Knoxville Tennessee last week, the price jumped from about $3.50 to $5.00 a gallon when it happened, everywhere was outta gas for at least a day practically. It's just now returning back to normal at $3.39 a gallon.

This is a hurricane leftover, the pipeline to the midwest was shut down as a precaution. It takes awhile to ramp it back online to full cap. No big deal. On the other hand we need to drill, and build more pipelines so that one area getting hurricanes doesn't affect the economy, or weekend driving in NVL.

Good point.

Since the mean Republicans rejected the drill 50 miles away bill the Democrats will offer a new bill, drill only where the water is over 2,00 feet deep or where ice over 2,000 feet thick or in the Caldera of an active volcanoe or on the 6th hole of a country club in Orange County.

The State Department briefing today touched on the stalled Status Of Forces Agreement (SOFA) negotiations in Iraq. You know. The same negotiations Obama tried to convince Maliki to delay until the next administration.

QUESTION: What’s going on with the Iraq – the deal on U.S. troops in Iraq? There are reports that --

MR. MCCORMACK: With the SOFA?

QUESTION: -- negotiations have stalled again, the question of immunity.

MR. MCCORMACK: I’m not going to talk about the substance of the negotiations. They continue. There have been a lot of ups and downs in these negotiations. But we still believe that we will be able to come to some agreement.

QUESTION: By December? Obviously, that’s when, you know –

Yeah. we know.

73 quickjustice  Fri, Sep 19, 2008 7:36:39pm

I was living in Nashville in the late 1970s under President Jimmy Carter when the last gas crisis hit. Carter decided to ration gasoline rather than let the free market work.

Result: All the gas stations in Tennessee were out of gas by about Tuesday of each week.

I had to drive from Nashville down to a wedding at Fort Benning in Georgia one weekend. I was scared to death I wouldn't be able to find enough gas to get to Georgia and then back. Every gas station in Tennessee down to the Georgia border was out of gas. When I crossed the Tennessee-Georgia border, every gas station in Georgia was open, with ample supplies.

I quickly figured it out: President Carter made sure his home state had plenty of gasoline, while everyone else suffered. That's what happens when you give the power to allocate supplies to a politician, as opposed to free markets.

Hey all, I did hear on the radio today someone talking about there being a lot of fuel trucks put out of commission by Ike, and the fact that oil companies are, in many cases, three days behind in their deliveries. This could be a possible explanation for the situation in Nashville, especially if they are some distance from the nearest pipeline, thereby making fuel trucks more necessary for their supply. I know little about the geography of oil supply lines, so I could be totally off-base here. Just thought I would throw this out there.

111 jcw46  Fri, Sep 19, 2008 7:44:41pm

The price of fuel has spiked because (they say) of the shut down of pumping in the Gulf and that the refineries around the Gulf also closed down.
Drilling more won't do much good if the oil refiners don't build more refineries. Besides the gov't restrictions and the time and money to build them, refiners don't have much incentive to build more as this would drive prices down. All the mergers of banks, oil companies, media companies, telecom companies into large monoliths is now showing us that this path was wrong to take. The instinct of capitalists is towards monopoly as this maximizes profit and control. This is the achilles heel of a free-market capitalistic economy.

Whether we like it or not, the gov't can play an important role in keeping the playing field fair and diversified enough so that no one player can grab all the marbles. This goes against most cons instinct for less gov't but hey there are no absolutes. Life has always been a balancing act.

We were discussing this last week in regards to the steel industry. There are now three major steel mills, and they have an oligolpoly. They keep introducing price increase after price increase despite constant (futile) protestations.

The ones I named of course aren't the only ones.
Drug companies that increase the price of drugs they sell the most of.
Cable companies that increase prices for wire already strung.
Even Sat companies that raise prices for access to satellites that have already paid for themselves.

The list goes on.

Hopefully maybe some of these monoliths will begin to see that it really isn't in their interest to be so large. It makes them vulnerable and they are like a sumo wrestler; no nimbleness to react quickly to sudden changes in the weather or political unrest.

The blind stupidity and greed of people who should know better just makes me want to bang my head against the wall sometimes.

Johnny Horton The Battle Of New Orleans

In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans
We fired our guns and the British kept a’comin.
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin’ on
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
We looked down the river and we see’d the British come
And there must have been a hundred of’em beatin’ on the drum
They stepped so high and they made the bugles ring
We stood by our cotton bales and didn’t say a thing
We fired our guns and the British kept a’comin.
There wasn’t nigh as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin’ on
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Moore County, Tennessee is dry because the tourists at the distillery were going into Lynchburg, getting drunk at the White Rabbit Saloon, and tearing up the town. Dang, and I thought it was just because the moonshiners didn't want the competition. My parents had a place on the mountain about 100 miles from Nashville and it was in a dry county but it was full of moonshiners. I think that county is allowed to sell beer there now but no liquor by the drink. I just got back from a biz trip to St. Louis and went to the Budweiser factory and you could only get 2 beers at the end of the tour. But it was free and free beer is always good.

Bush Urges More Nuclear Plants and Building Refineries on Bases

President Bush said today that he wanted the United States to build more nuclear power plants, turn unused military bases into refineries and raise sales of more efficient cars to make America less dependent on foreign fuel sources.

The Senate minority leader, Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, called President Bush's initiatives "little more than half-measures and wrongheaded policies that will do nothing to address the current energy crisis or break the stranglehold that foreign oil has on our nation," The Associated Press said.

Mr. Reid said that a plan by Senate Democrats would offer more tax incentives - double the $8 billion approved by the House - and funnel more of the money to renewable energy sources and energy-efficiency measures.

Rumor once had it that Johnny Horton was the real person behind the notorious "Johnny Reb" persona in the early-mid '60s. Many jaw-dropping racist songs (some of which were unbelievably catchy, however) were released under the name "Johhny Reb" -- but current scholarship now believes it was a "group pseudonym" that any singer who wanted to release a racist song would use. Horton may have been one of them, or may not. We will probably never find out. I know a historian who has some of the records, so I've heard a few of them. You literally can't believe what you're hearing, racism-wise. But the melodies are sometimes hit-worthy, and the wordplay amazing. It's an entire hidden genre of music that few know about today.

Maybe it should be, but it isn't. There's a weird provision in the U.S. Constitution, related to the repeal of Prohibition, about the power of the states to control the sale of alcohol within their borders.

This is what the amendment says..

Section 2. The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use there in of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited.

That assumes the State law being violated is itself Constitutional. But Roe vs Wade overturns that. Its the same right to privacy mentioned in that ruling that should make it illegal for a State to ban use of intoxicating liquors.

Unions on the inside for Bush's energy policy

One area that Hoffa sees as beneficial for union members is the exploration of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska for oil and natural gas.

The Teamsters see at least 25,000 new jobs associated with exploration of the site, and will try to help the president make the case that it can be explored without hurting the environment.

But Daniel Becker, director of the Sierra Club's Global Warming and Energy Program, reiterated the group's opposition to the plan. "The centerpiece of the president's plan is to pillage the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for a six-month fix of oil. The Congress has said no because the American people have said no. That's an unacceptable destruction of a very special place." Participants in the meeting said Cheney would not guarantee that any jobs in the proposal would be union jobs or, in response to a question from the Steelworkers union, that new pipelines would be made from U.S. steel rather than cheaper imports.

In the course of just a few weeks the price of the big bailout may exceed the entire cost of the war effort in Iraq. But instead of liberating millions it will do just the opposite.

The problem is that the government won't let small rejections of loans happen and so lots of bad loans build up over the years resulting in a catastrophic failure. The government's red lining policy, accompanied with their backing up of banks financially, results in lots and lots of bad loans over a long period of time. Well, reality can't be fooled. Real value can't be faked, and so a collapse is inevitable. This is how the crash of '29 occurred. The government had a "cheap money policy", in which the banks were forced to give out unsafe loans. So, instead of hurting a person here or there in a small way, everyone ended up getting hurt in a big way for a long period of time.

Free markets work, governments don't.

I love this verse:

We fired our cannon ’til the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind

Guaranteed to warm the very cockles of a PETA-bot's heart!

Hi zombie! Hope you're well tonight! I agree with you and even more so where books are concerned. Lost in the (non-story) about Palin's bookburning were the stories from a couple of years ago about several school boards (at least one in San Francisco) banning Mark Twain's "Huckelberry Finn" because Twain had Huck using the word Ni**er eleven times in that book and therefore the book was racist. I wrote to all of the school boards Identified and educated them about the book: it was written by someone from a Southern leaning (heavily) state, Missouri, during the Civil War (the state, not the book!) who was criticized unmercifully by his neighbors for writing that book because it was so anti-segregationist. Yup, ban a book that sought to advance the cause of integration when integration was EXTREMELY unpopular in a lot of quarters because the author, a GREAT American (IMO) used that word eleven times.
Racism ought to be exposed wherever it rears it's head and whether or not it has a catchy beat; you are absolutely correct about that.

There's a lot more money to be made making the huge compressor housings and pumps for Nuclear reactors, along with all the plumbing, but the Steel Union heads are seeing that that gets offshored.... idiots.

Well a significant part of the financial situation right now comes from the Community Redevelopment Act, passed and gleefully signed into law by Jimmy Carter and "refreshed" by Bill Clinton so as to make it easier for people with poor credit risks to sue lenders who failed to give them a mortgage loan. So rather than fighting off a gazillion lawsuits the lenders made the loans and then sold them to anyone they could as fast as they could - ultimately giving rise to the sub-prime mortgage situation and the bundling of those loans into pools which folks like Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers issued bonds, secured by those pools of crappy loans. And many of those bonds were insured by AIG on the strenght of the amount of loans in each pool.
I frankly see the US government spending or guarantying the spending of Taxpayer dollars here the same way the government would spend taxpayer dollars if someone were to declare war on the US because, and make no mistake about this, the US economy is under siege and it doesn't all come from fat rich cats; a lot of it is from overseas and especially the Middle East.

Point is that the Democrat domestic plan is DOA except for the rick of greater domestic intrusion and behavior control. The only other difference is that McCain will build the military, good union steel jobs there.

re: #414 zombie

That's the Democrats/MSM's primary strategy: create a financial meltdown before the election.

That's some pretty strong language there. The problem with it is that no one can predict what the USA would look like on the other side. The Democrats or Republicans for that matter can not predict what the outcome of such a grand experiment would be. Its pretty easy to see how such turmoil would turn everything so upside down that no one could hold together any kind of political coalition. And thats all the Democrats are. A political coalition of people who would otherwise hate each others presence in the same room. Especially if things were scarce.

There is a great pent-up need for Horton in the American public that is not being fulfilled by our contemporary culture. I sensed that need, and satisfied it.

...

I wrote that as a joke, but now that I think about it -- it's absolutely true.

Horton sang songs that were pure, unadulterated Americana -- quintessence of patriotism, completely unapologetic. Simple, upbeat, unforgettable. It seems from this thread that his songs branded themselves on the souls of a lot of people who heard them as youngsters. Many people, it seems, have an unarticulated pining for the world Johnny Horton represented. Now, seemingly, lost forever.

Baseball instead of music, but I like this line from "Shoeless Joe" by W.P. Kinsella (spoken by "J.D. Salinger"):

"I don't have to tell you that the one constant thought through all the years has been baseball. America has been erased like a blackboard, only to be rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked time with America has rolled by like a procession of steamrollers. It is the same game the Moonlight Graham played in 1905. It is a living part of history, like calico dresses, stone crockery, and threshing crews eating at outdoor tables. It continually reminds us of what once was, like an Indian-head penny in a handful of new coins."

Rock Stars Oppose Bush's Energy Plan and Ask Fans to Join Them

Rich celebrities F*ing with your quality of life again

Riled by an energy plan they call a sop to business and a grave threat to the environment, Crosby, Stills & Nash and about a dozen other popular bands joined together over the summer to stir their fans to action, as Congress prepares to consider significant energy legislation this autumn.

Part of an effort, organized by the drummer Michael Diamond, or Mike D., the founder of the Beastie Boys, with the help of several major environmental groups, performers as disparate in style and following as Jackson Browne, Moby, Matchbox 20 and the Barenaked Ladies have permitted volunteers to canvass their concerts for signatures against the energy plan. Most, like Mr. Crosby, have urged fans to sign petitions at the stadiums or online.

Just say you are welcome.
I went to a management seminar many years back, and one lesson was in how to reply to a compliment

They said Thanks,
I said don't mention it.
Next time, they didn't.

The boss said thanks,
I said think nothing of it.
When he passed out year end bonuses, he didn't think about it.

The list was long.

I think it is hard for me to just say you're welcome because I really enjoy my job, Iraq deployments and all. My friends and family who are not in the army think it is really a difficult thing to do, and for some people it is, but for me, it is just a really cool job. For example, right now I am counting down the days until I get to deploy somewhere, anywhere again, because I am just so bored. I need to get a mission and go do something, fast. My biggest fear in life is being bored to death. There was a whole section on my need for variety and stimulation in my psych eval.

Johnny Horton records are among the most-played on the jukebox in the bar in the small Alberta town near my home. Even now.

Back in the late '50s, Johnny Horton and Johnny Cash were touring as a double bill through the Prairie provinces. No jetliner travel for them in those days, just the two of them in a car on a road trip. They drove from Edmonton, Alberta to Prince Alberta, Saskatchewan (IIRC) and on the road, they composed a song, "Girl From Saskatoon", which Cash later recorded. If you listen to the song, you can pick up little bits of local color that make it obvious they had been down that road.

And I sorta suspect that George Soro's and his buddies has a lot to do with it.
The problem with letting the economy or at least the Wall Street, Banking side of it go to hell is that SO many millions and millions of Americans are invested in it - either directly or through their pension plans, 401-K's and IRA's. If we were to let "free markets" ride NOW, we'd suffer a depression that would make the "great" Depression look like a walk in the park.
And if the US econonmy crashes and burns, then the World's economy will crash and burn.

So rather than fighting off a gazillion lawsuits the lenders made the loans and then sold them to anyone they could as fast as they could

Yes, the myriad of ways regulations get us are simply unforeseen and maybe unforeseeable.

- ultimately giving rise to the sub-prime mortgage situation and the bundling of those loans into pools which folks like Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers issued bonds, secured by those pools of crappy loans.
Same with the enormous increase in the cost of oil.

Also, that government money used to back up the failed institutions (government caused) isn't new value, it's money that would otherwise be invested into innovations and new goods and services. Was it Henry Hazlitt who came up with the idea of the "Broken Window Fallacy"? A broken window is a loss. The money that goes to repair it could have gone elsewhere.

It was so bad that it sounded made-up, as if someone spliced together a bunch of the "ums" and "uhs". But it was absolutely authentic. Well, this is what decades of Gramscian whoredom and the dumbing down of the population leads to. If he is elected, G-d help us.

I was just listening to a clip from Obama's press conference today, on the web archives of Hugh Hewitt's radio show today, Dean Barnett filling in. Someone asked him about the bailout costs and if there should be a cap. His answer was an complete mumblings stammering mess. I'm talking second after second of "um-uh-uh-and" and finally said "wake up on Monday and keep doing what they've been doing". I mean, the guy had not the slightest idea how to answer in any halfway intelligent manner. That this guy is the leading candidate for president is just so totally surreal and deeply disturbing.

When the chips are down, America unites. And when that happens America's enemies are not safe anywhere. If outsiders think Republicans and Democrats can be "mean" to each other, they should see how mean Americans can really be when outsiders become a common enemy.

How quaint. Did you just get out of a time machine from December 8, 1941? I used to think this way too. That was before just a day or two after 9/11/2001 I heard American citizens bloviating about how we 'deserved' it.

Welcome Back, Carter

Jimmy Carter rabbit incident

Upon closer inspection, the animal turned out to be a rabbit. Not one of your cutesy, Easter Bunny-type rabbits, but one of those big splay-footed things that we called swamp rabbits when I was growing up.
The animal was clearly in distress, or perhaps berserk. The President confessed to having had limited experience with enraged rabbits. He was unable to reach a definite conclusion about its state of mind. What was obvious, however, was that this large, wet animal, making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth, was intent upon climbing into the Presidential boat.

That is really a Communist tactic. They want to exacerbate any grievance to make life as difficult as possible. This creates a populace that is ready for a change, any change, to alleviate some of the misery. Then the Revolutionary vanguard steps up to the plate and overthrows the government, which then begins to form a Socialist Worker's Paradise.

With all of the purges, pogroms, and mass arrests that form the backbone of the Socialist State.

But as to whether or not I personally witnessed or remember anything that I study -- that shall remain unknowable!

Since I don't pay attention to popular culture as it's happening anyway, even if I was that old, doesn't mean I'd remember it. Hell, I recently saw a discussion of popular music in the '90s, and 95% of it I had never even heard of -- yet I lived through the era.

Walked down 8th street in NY today and passed 8 to 10 closed storefronts in a 2 block stretch. Very bad.

I was just in Hartford last week and didn't hear one word about it. Strange and disturbing.

8th Street's been on a downward spiral for quite a while now. It's sad to remember how vibrant it used to be in the 70s and 80s. (I wasn't around for the 60s.) Now it's nothing but trashy shoe and cheap clothing stores with the occasional goth jewelry place.

Did you know that when Twain lived in CT, there was a young Black man who had just been admitted to Yale Law School. The local papers were all aglow that a Black Man was in Yale Law School. Of course, he had to work two full time jobs to pay for tuition and room and board. Twain contacted the President of Yale and said he wanted the young man to get a full ride - scholarship, books, room and board and Twain would pay for it. Annonymously.
That young black man graduated 3rd in his class and went on to become an associate of a young black man in an all black law firm down south (sorry don't remember the state) and the new young associate was the only assistant Thurgood Marshall had in developing and ultimately winning the famous case of Brown vs. the Board of Education.
And some schools wanted to burn Mark Twain's books.
BTW, in case you haven't guessed it yet, ALL of the schools that wanted the books burner (or banned) were in Elite Leftist School Districts.

The songs actually started coming out in 1959, the same year Horton recorded his "Johnny Rebel," which was a hit - - and which may have been the inspiration for the pseudonym.

He may have started the genre, then died, and it was continued by others.

The "Johnny Rebel" that did the racist music ripped off his name from Horton's song, which actually speaks very powerfully to a lot of the points that Realwest was making last night that many Southerners were fighting for things other than just attempting to hold on to "the peculiar institution".

I saw you a-marchin' with Robert E. Lee

Exactamente. That is the Obama/Dem/MSM strategy in a nutshell. And it is the very reason he chose "Change" as his motto.

The one flaw in their plan is that the trick dates back to 1905, if not earlier, and we see through it like a piece of Saran Wrap. Obama is betting the American public is gullible and unfamiliar with communist "regime change" strategies. We're betting that Americans have wised up.

How'd the interview go?

Thanks so much for asking. I'm on pins and needles. I feel that I nailed 2 out of the three major job responsibilities. But the third is something I have no direct experience in - they will either decide that the third piece can be learned or they will have someone who can meet most of all three requirements. I am SO strong the first two, but it's that third piece that is in question.

I HATE interviewing! My resume should speak for itself and employers should be lining up outside my door bidding for me to join their firms!

I think I need to adjust my expectations!

I was at the McCain-Palin Rally at the Anoka County Airport today

The public address system sucked.

I was halfway down the very large hangar at the north end of the airport (someone could really play football in there) and about half the time it sounded like SP and JSM were blessing the cheese makers.

It would have really helped to have another set of loudspeakers about halfway down the hangar.

Also a woman fainted about ten feet away from me when JSM and SP arrived.

According to the TSA (they ran the metal detector checkpoints) there were over 13,000 people at the rally.

Read (don't watch the movie) Gone With The Wind. It is a fascinating account of the times and give such an accurate portrayal of BOTH sides that you will question more than you can answer. I am re-reading it after 30 years of reading the book. Get past the movie and read the incredible prescient narrative presented by Ms. Mitchell.

re: #534 realwest

Very interesting story, real. Here's a little more detail about it.

I'm not so sure about the idea that it was "elitist leftist" school districts that either banned or tried to ban Twain's books, though. I looked online for info about where and when his books had been banned, but couldn't find much. Perhaps you can help.

Yeah. Sad to see, for sure. He seemed so clued into the evil of the Mansons. Yet in re-reading the book, I can see him falling for the Manson mystic and only his position kept him from becoming a disciple, himself - he came close, and the underlying currents of the story reveal to me today, some 40 years later, that he may have succumbed. So maybe his BDS is not so surprising.

I think there is a whole bunch of people out there who can't handle the realities of the world. Either because they are constitutionally unable to cope or because they witnessed, or endured real life trauma and they cannot or do not ever want to cope with it again.

Perhaps the Helter Skelter author falls into the second category. Delving into the psyche of a whacko like Mansen might do it that to a person.

Instead of accepting that war is war, these people have to find another way to explain it to themselves--i.e. bush/hitler/chimpy

If you know Rush, then you know that he doesn't think that way. IIRC, he was referring to those few who are would take certain simple jobs, and I know he balanced it out with "Stupid, dumb Americans". He was referring not to a whole population, but to a small cross section.

Here's the whole quote from ABC news in context, it was a piece on Nafta:

Second, the quotes of Limbaugh’s are out of context.

Railing against NAFTA in 1993, Limbaugh said, "If you are unskilled and uneducated, your job is going south. Skilled workers, educated people are going to do fine 'cause those are the kinds of jobs NAFTA is going to create. If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid people, I'm serious, let the unskilled jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do -- let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work."

Not one of his most eloquent moments, to be sure, but his larger point was that NAFTA would mean that unskilled stupid Mexicans would be doing the jobs of unskilled stupid Americans.

And I still don't want National Health Care. But I would surely like to see some accountability for pharmacuetical companies. Nope, because after the O.J. Simpson trial he wrote a book, "Outrage: The 5 Reasons O.J. I hear you. America develops 90% of new drugs. They got to make up those R&D costs. Israel does a lot too. Like I said, scammers are killing us. The drug companies sell the drugs at a lower rate to other countries. I don't have the answer. The government could help for people who really need it. Lots of abuse of government programs. Lot of selfish politicians.

That is just f*cking sick.

Who was it upthread who said Americans stick together and get mean together when faced with a common threat?

That was a long time ago, in a very different America.

That was an America where blacks really WERE second-class citizens, women really WERE denied the same opportunities as men, American Indians were much poorer than they are now, and Jews were barred from living in many neighborhoods, and yet every one of those groups knew they had it 1000X better in America than they'd have it under the Fascists and they thanked God (or the Great Spirit) for it every day.

Myself, I knew that America was gone just a day or two after 9/11/01. The rubble of the towers was still burning and American citizens were saying out loud that we "deserved" it. And nothing was happening to them. Angry mobs should have been dragging such people into the streets and kicking the sh*t out of them.

Well he was extremely active - as was his then girlfriend Bernadine Dorhn in writing the new manifesto of resistance in 1980 and Ayers and Dohrn later became legal guardians to the son of former Weathermen David Gilbert and Kathy Boudin after the boy's parents were convicted and sent to prison for their part in the Brinks Robbery of 1981. Kathy Boudin was, btw, convicted of the felony murder of a police officer and the wounding of an Armored Car driver.
As for the timing you may be correct, but the fact is that the VERY LAST US Troops left S.V. in April of 1973; so the numbers of US Troops (which had been in excess of 495,000) who departed Vietnam when that bombing occured couldn't have been more than about 10,000 if that.
They both were and still are unrepenatent murderers, who wrote the Declaration of War on The US for the SDS Weather Underground.

Yes - let's talk about Obama and preferential bank access.

Obama Top Fundraiser on Wall Street, 1st qtr 2007
Wall Street puts its money behind Obama - June 2008
Update: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Invest in Lawmakers. Obama #2

Obama is a scumbag.

Both McCain and Obama have taken plenty of money from Wall Street.

And how about Washington? Both John McCain and Barack Obama sounded reform and fix-it themes after the Lehman Bros., Merrill Lynch, AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac horses had already left the barn. Obama said, "Today offers more evidence that too many folks in Washington and on Wall Street weren't minding the store." McCain, an outspoken advocate for less government and more deregulation, issued a TV ad stating that, "Our economy in crisis. Only proven reformers John McCain and Sarah Palin can fix it. Tougher rules on Wall Street to protect your life savings."

But that mostly sounds like campaign hokum. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign donations with the same furor with which the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracks deadly viruses, bankrupt Lehman Brothers, to cite just one example, has given $9.2 million to members of Congress since 1989, with 54 percent going to Democrats. New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. "Barack Obama top the list of all-time recipients for the company, collecting $410,000 and $395,000 respectively," while Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., took in $181,450.

According to the center, "Lehman employees (this election cycle) have made their firm one of the top contributors to both Obama ($370,000) and John McCain ($117,500)." AIG, the insurance giant on life support, gave $116,400 to Schumer; McCain received $103,000 and Obama, $82,600. Meanwhile, people associated with Merrill Lynch, newly bailed out by Bank of America, gave $394,300 to McCain; the company was his largest contributor; Obama received $229,100. At those prices, taxpayers got about as much congressional oversight as they could possibly stand. The results are playing out on the evening news. Members of Congress weren't minding the store, they were the store. In the end, the calamity will cost us much more than Cristal.

No, he was elected in 2004. He launched his presidential campaign in 2007. It only makes sense that both McCain and Obama would have collected lots of money from Wall Street. They are running big, expensive, long-term campaigns, and Wall Street is where the money is.

/so, brass tacks, Obama is a hard core socialist, true or false?

False. Also, just heard an interesting fact on a replay of a news show re McCain having taken 10 times as much from officers, directors, and lobbyists of Fannie/Frieddie as Obama. That could be the case if most of Obama's contributions came from other employees, which would make sense as they are located in a blue part of the country. The news announcer cited the Federal Election Commission. Their web site isn't the easiest to sort through, but I'll check it out . . . . tomorrow.

I live in the Nashville area, I drive a 18-wheeler truck, and I spoke to various fuel tanker drivers that are working their butts off since Hurricane Ike. Here's what is going on: think of a rolling brown out of electricity. There isn't enough electrical generating capacity to power every home all at the same moment of peak demand. The power company cuts power to segments of the grid for short periods before restoring power to that segment and cutting power to another segment, and on and on. That's what is happening with fuel supply in the area.

The fuel pipeline(s) from the shut TX refineries are only running about 20-25% capacity. To supplement this lessened pipeline supply companies are supplying fuel by tanker trucks. The fleet of tanker trucks can't supply the volume of the pipeline to everyone, everywhere so those tanker trucks are concentrating their deliveries to one area, and then to another area, and then to another area. The week before Knoxville, TN area was short of fuel.

Also, when fuel supply is constrained below normal the refiners or the companies sitting between refiners and retail dealers, put outlets on "allocation". Those outlets can't buy as much fuel as they want to pay for, they are limited by some formula which promises fuel first to outlets of name-brand fuel and the remaining fuel is sold to unbranded fuel outlets. Think rationing.

The refineries are coming back on-line quickly and things will return to pre-hurricane conditions within a week or two. BTW, even on a good day there isn't enough fuel to supply everyone if they rushed to the gas station on the same day. That panic buying just exaggerates the shortage. It's probably best to stop driving full-time with the gas needle between 1/4 and E adding a small amount frequently, which is what it seems most people do. Fill-up and then re-fill when it gets between 1/2 and 1/4. That way if you have to wait a day or two for fuel it's not an emergency.

But the news media reinforce the view that it's best to panic early and avoid the rush.

Are hurricanes new? No?

re: #731 tscottme

So it's private industry rationing which will abate quickly. Great post!

More evidence that we need more refineries ASAP.

re: #721 JustMyView

You only can dismantle corrupt bureaucracies like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae when they get into so much trouble that their mismanagement and damage to our economy stands egregiously and publicly exposed, like now. We should take advantage of this "teaching moment" to wind them down (gradually if possible) to limit their ability to damage our economy in future.

This is a New Deal program gone horrible bad, and is further proof that the New Deal failed. (Read Shlaes's The Forgotten Man for more details). It also exposes the folly of the Democrats, who continue to peddle these programs as virtuous, because they make credit available to people who can't afford to repay the loans. We'd be better off making outright cash grants without requiring repayment. At least such a program wouldn't threaten to bring down the entire financial system around our ears, and we'd book, and calculate the degree to which we could afford, those grants correctly.

Everyone knows that both McCain and Obama took money from these entities, although McCain's receipts seem much smaller relative to his time in the Senate. And McCain led an effort to give them more oversight and supervision when they last got into trouble in the aftermath of the Raines scandal.

Obama did worse than nothing: he advocates for more of the same, and half the country seems to believe him.

re: #683 JustMyView

You continue to claim that Obama and unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers were merely casual acquaintances? That shibboleth was discredited months ago by many sources.

Tom and Bill Ayers were Obama's main political sponsors in Chicago. Bill Ayers put Obama on the Wood Foundation, and Tom used his social and political connections to get Obama into Harvard Law School and Sidley & Austin. Check out Steve Diamond's blog for the details.

I live in the Nashville area, and yes there were long lines in Nashville. Lots of stations with no gas. Cars along the side of the road out of gas. The spouse drove around for an hour looking for a place with gas yesterday so we'd have enough gas to drive 30 minutes to the airport. He didn't get why I thought that was funny. Last night we flew to Knoxville - lower prices, no lines, plenty of gas. When I get back to Nashville Monday, if there isn't any gas, then I have a good excuse to miss work. A blessing in disguise.

re: #642 JustMyView

There's an FBI report that says that unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers's wife, Dohrn, likely placed the bomb that killed that San Francisco cop. And Ayers likely knew exactly what she was up to.

So Ayers's claim that "no one was hurt" by the Weather Underground bombings is nonsense.

Grainger County, TN (on Rt 25W between Knoxville & Morristown, home of the downtown SkyWalk) has the very best tomatoes in the world. And the thriving metropolis of Bean Station has some beautiful lakes and rivers nestled amongst the mountains. Wish I could convince the Ms. that it is where we should be looking to move to.

Drill here. Drill NOW. Build nuclear powerplants. Build refineries. In Kansas, New Mexico, South Dakota and elsewhere to minimize a 'target rich environment' like we have now. And straight to h3ll with the watermelon environmentalists. corrupt politicians and the washed-up rock stars that say otherwise!

739 Godwrestler  Sat, Sep 20, 2008 7:17:31am

The same thing happened in Tallahassee. A friend of mine in Tal. called me last night and told me everybody is having to drive out town to get gas. Someone sent a text or email which created a panic

740 MadJadBad  Sat, Sep 20, 2008 8:29:28am

Ike got squeezed between 2 high pressure systems, funneling the winds NE. In SW Ohio, we got pummeled last Sunday with a 100-year wind storm that cause wide spread power outages. I saw a traffic light spinning around on its support wire. I've never seen anything like that around here. No one expected such strong, continuous winds. I was lucky because in my neighborhood the power was restored the next day, while 800,000+ meters still had no power. The result was that everyone flocked to my neighborhood for gas, food and ice and supplies were quickly depleted. Last time I bought gas was Thursday, but only about 10-20% of the stations were out of gas. Prices peaked around $4.08/gal and are now around $3.85.

741 tgibson1962  Sat, Sep 20, 2008 12:10:10pm

Reporting from Atlanta, most stations only have premium unleaded which is "high test" for those of us old enough to remember.

742 Keith  Wed, Sep 24, 2008 12:12:40am

Figured I'd stop by to report that Nashville is *still* largely out of gas. On Monday when I drove to work there was one station along the way that had any gas, and there was a line of cars waiting to fill up. I worked from home yesterday since my car is about out of gas, and tonight I drove around and there are NO gas stations that have gas in my area that I could find. It's bizarre.
