I'm here. And I'm going to be back at the theatre tonight working lights for our new show that opened last night.
It will still be a few weeks before I can do the more physical stuff (building sets, cleaning, lifting etc), but so far it appears to be going fine.
Barely no pain, but still a lot of brusing and a bit of swelling around the waist and crouch.
My first official follow up visit is this coming Wed.

This whole thing really bothers me. I was reading up on the "deal" and it looks like the gov is willing to pay 700 billion to buy out the bad mortgage paper.
Yet, this in no way helps any mortgage holders who truely needs some help. This only bails out the lenders.
So, the lenders don't take a real negative hit but the borrowers who REALLY have taken a financial hit from the economy, job lost, out sourcing and so forth, they are still on the hook for every cent.
And a further burden have been placed on them in the form of taxes to pay for all this, which HAS to come from somewhere, which ususally means US.
Or am I missing something here?

Mr Dt told me to read this and then I had nightmares - from the blog of a weapons expert: Perfect Storm from Hell
When the USSR was falling apart, and in the aftermath of the USSR breakup, Iran spend a lot of money to hire some of the best Soviet biological war experts. The advanced biowar weapons that Iran has developed gives Iran a Global Strategic Weapon of Mass Destruction that can unleash levels of death among the populations of the major neo-con nations (USA, UK, France, German, Italy, etc.) very similar to that from a global strategic nuclear strike. This means that Iran and her allies have a MAD with America, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, German, Italy, etc. Most people think of biological warfare as anthrax and smallpox; they do not understand that there has been a major shift in technology. The difference between the old biowar (that most people think of) and advanced biowar (with its recombination DNA designer super killer viruses) is like the difference between an old Model T Ford and a 2008 Rolls Royce Phantom. Both are cars, or biological weapons, but there is a difference of several orders of magnitude.
Regardless of how a war against Iran breaks out, it is likely to very quickly escalate to the usage of WMD. There has been talk among USAF war planners of a 1,200 (some say 2,000 to 3,000 or more) target attack on Iran’s nuclear, industrial, military, political and religious infrastructure. If a foreign enemy were to bomb 1,200 or more targets in the United States what would be the response of the American government and it’s military? Actually the answer to this question is well known. The stated doctrine of the United States of America is to rain hundreds of hydrogen bombs (WMD) on the territory and people of such an aggressor; this has been our policy for approximately 60 years. Why do we presuppose that the Iranians would not do the same?

The acting fine, the quality of the production, fine, the subject matter, well, it's been done before, over and over.
It's called "Summertree" and it looks at Vietnam from the personal side of things, not the political side.
But, it was written in the 70's, it's got all the metaphors and hooks you would expect it to have to overly tug at your heart strings, I really consider it sophomoric (sp?) writing.
It's sort of like "Tuesdays with Morrie," with war as the subject. It's got the little kid (getting killed in various ways during the show), the motherly mom, the unfullfilled dad, the hippie girlfriend, all very surface, no depth, no nuance.
Our production, excellent, worth the two hours, the material, a 3 hanky show that the liberals will trip all over getting to see it.

Known as the Steel Magnolia in her youth, Miss Rice has guided the US through the war on terror, looked tyrants in the eye and faced down terrorist threats during her nation's darkest hours.
But a new book reveals that she was not so steadfast in facing down her own more personal enemies within the Bush administration.
Instead, Miss Rice was so fazed by former Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that she burst into tears at a meeting in the White House situation room.

One of the issues with bio weapons is that you only want a 25-40% mortality rate. You want a near 95% infection rate so that the citizenry are bogged down with sickness. When you begin to exceed that mortality rate the infected places just get written off as lost. The Capt Trips of Stephan King are fantasy unless you're using a doomsday weapon that kills both you and your enemy.

Re seatbelts on trains
Been meaning to ask this ... why are there no seatbelts on trains (thinking of recent terrible event in Simi Valley)?
For years there was scoffing at the idea that school busses needed to be safer inside, but I now see busses with highback seats, padded better than the steel rails that went across the back of seats (right at tooth level) when I was a kid. Seatbelts? I don't know if they've gone that far.
A year or so ago there was a bad crash in Atlanta of a leased bus carrying a college team, where the bus flipped over the railing and landed below -- I recall comments then that there would likely not have been such a severe list of injured and dead if there had been ... seatbelts.
The commentary on the Simi Valley crash was that people were flying unhindered through the air at 80 mph at the time of impact -- a situation that would have been prevented with seatbelts. Yes, there would still have been injuries and death, but I'd just as soon have a chance at survival with a seatbelt.
Anyone got any data here? Are we up against lobbyists from the bus manufacturers persuading our loyal elected officials against legislation? I'm NOT a fan of big government, but isn't safety at this level something that government should be handling? Thanks.

Bullshit.
The right hates Obama's socialist values worse. Republicans do not want terrorists in the Lincoln bedroom. Catholic's who usually vote democrat are up in arms with Biden and his abortion stance. So far 55 bishops have publicly come out against him. Even the Knights of Columbus are taking out ads against Obama.
Obama is unlikable in a way that kennedy and clinton were NOT - and then there is Michelle: one of the sourest, most pessimistic, and low-class, as in tacky, sounding political wives I can ever remember.

Less than that, actually. Blacks are about 12.9% of the population nationally, although that varies from state to state. Here in Georgia, for instance, it's about 24%, I think.
I'm sure this was discussed earlier, but here's a link to the poll that basically says whites are all a bunch of racists therefore Obama is in trouble:
Poll: Racial views steer some white Dems away from Obama
Way way down, you finally get to this:
Lots of Republicans harbor prejudices, too, but the survey found they weren't voting against Obama because of his race. Most Republicans wouldn't vote for any Democrat for president — white, black or brown.

Seatbelts on school busses is not a good idea. As an old school bus driver, I can tell you the reasoning for NOT having them is this: A full sized bus can carry up to 72 small children. Should that bus catch fire, or hit water, the chances of a single driver getting them unbuckled is zero. Hence the high seats.

When the market for subprime mortgage derivatives like credit default swaps tanked, they had to be marked with a value of zero.
Everyone's books imploded.
What Paulson is doing is buying all the paper AND CREATING A MARKET FOR IT. The underlying assets, - the houses - DO have value, after all.

EXACTLY! When I worked at Nordstrom years ago - I finished wrapping a gift package and turned to the next customer who was across the jewelry bay behind me - a black woman - who angrily asked: 'Are you telling me that you really didn't see me?" I was so shocked. I had been facing the other side of the store wrapping a package - I did not have eyes in the back of my head. There also happened to be a high cupboard island filled with jewelry in the center of the jewelry bay - and she was behind THAT.
I was mortified that she was so dellusional to think that I could see through cases and wooden structures. She could have EASILY walked around to my side of the cases to get my attention.

And a Putin or a Chavez or a Wall-Street speculator that runs a leverage brokerage house is more a hunter than a professor or community organizer. Harvard Law School is not as valuable a touchstone to human nature as raising five children in Alaska while going toe-to-toe with pretty tough, hard-nose Alaskan males.

It might work if this year the Repubs weren't putting up two candidates famous for running corruption from both parties out of town on a rail.
If Mac makes it plain to the voters that Obama has ZERO record in fighting Dems who - like himself - had both pockets stuffed with cash from floundering financial rackets and their helmsmen, while Mac has been shown willing to wipe out fraud regardless of the side of the aisle supporting it, Americans would flock to pull the (R) lever.
"vote for Obama, leave most of the crooks right where they DON'T belong"
As for the right hating the bailout: A major depression would cost more jobs, more relief $$$, more bank, financial institution and industry failure, FDIC payouts, and ultimate make a trillion dollar payback for the taxpayer look like a day at the beach. And if repubs are repulsed by the government getting involved in a bailout scheme, let them imagine how much power government programs and makework projects would give Big Brother in the event of a broader economic meltdown.

Obama, the first black candidate with a serious shot at the presidency, accepted the Democratic nomination on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, a seminal moment for a nation that enshrined slavery in its Constitution.
Slavery is not mentioned once in the Constitution, aside from the amendment banning it. Article 1, Section 2 describes the method of counting people for apportioning representatives and refers to free persons, Indians, and "all others." It by no means establishes a constitutional right to own slaves.

Thanks.
No question that they should have belts and people can choose to wear them - actually - they should be mandated to wear them so that people don't go flying across the train and slam into others who are securely fastened.

And the super dry Colorado weather doesn't help. Most people who have spent a good amount of time in Colorado (I've been here 20 years), eventualy find out why leather looks like it does after many years of use.
But that's the nicest thing anyone has said to me in a long time. You are a woman, yes? LOL.

The blacks make up only around 25% of the total population. I suspect minority voters for nObama might be disappointed when he loses big.
"According to Census 2000 figures released this week, 36.4 million people, or 12.9 percent of the total population, reported as being Black or African American."
Yes there have been changes since 2000 but doubt the percentage has changed.

Washington Post Attacks Washington PostThe Washington Post's Michael Dobbs fact checks the ad this campaign released yesterday titled "Advice":
So what evidence does the McCain campaign have for the supposed Obama-Raines connection? It is pretty flimsy, but it is not made up completely out of whole cloth.
Pretty flimsy? As Dobbs goes on to say, that "pretty flimsy" source is his own paper, the Washington Post. The Post reported that Raines had "taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters." It then recycled that information into two more pieces, one of which was an editorial. But we're willing to make a deal. If Dobbs admits his newspaper is not a credible source, we'll take down the ad.

No Time for the FactsTime magazine’s Karen Tumulty accuses this campaign of racism for launching this ad targeting Senator Obama’s ties to Fannie Mae Chairman Franklin Raines. Why? Tumulty writes:
Obama's Fannie Mae connections are completely fair game. But this ad doesn't even mention a far more significant tie--that of Jim Johnson, the former Fannie Mae chairman who had to resign as head of Obama's vice presidential search team after it was revealed he got a sweetheart deal on a mortgage from Countrywide Financial. Instead, it relies on a fleeting and tenuous reference in a Washington Post Style section story to suggest that Obama's principal economic adviser is former Fannie Mae Chairman Frank Raines. Why? One reason might be that Johnson is white; Raines is black.
The only problem with Ms. Tumulty’s story is that we also released an today targeting Senator Obama’s extensive ties to Jim Johnson. The ad is called…Jim Johnson. And Ms. Tumulty might have been aware of its existence if she’d bothered to call this campaign to find out the facts (reporting) before indicting us for racism in a half-baked, late night rant. Tumulty also takes Obama’s response, signed by Mr. Raines, at face value. The Obama campaign says Raines didn’t advise the campaign, and Tumulty apparently wasn’t interested in getting to the bottom of that either. So we contacted Ms. Tumulty and told her of the multiple sources that tie Raines to Obama, including three separate instances in the Washington Post, none of which was ever challenged by Raines or the Obama campaign until yesterday.Tumulty did not correct her post, she simply responded “I grew up in Texas. I know what this stuff looks like.” Well, now we all know what hysterical liberal bias looks like as well.

I don't think there is anything that Obama could offer Hillary at this point that would induce her to take the VP slot. It would lock her out of a run for the top job for 8 years -- she couldn't challenge Obama in his re-election bid while serving as his VP -- and at her age, those extra four years from 2012 to 2016 make a big difference. Far better for her politically to let him fall on his sword so that she can tell the Democrat Party, "See? I told you so!"
Bill Clinton is doing his part, saying nice things about Sarah Palin's instinctive campaigning abilities while damning Obama with faint praise.
And even making the offer is totally fraught with danger for Obama: Mr. "I Have the Judgment to Make Up for My Experience" didn't choose Hillary at the convention, but now wants her? Why not then?

Don’t be shocked if you see the McCain campaign pull the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright out of mothballs in new attacks against one-time parishioner, Barack Obama.
It's pretty pathetic if that's the best they can come up with. Nothing new to offer? Out of ideas? No problem! Just besmirch the character of the guy running against you.
Instead of focusing on the issues the Republicans have only personal attacks to offer, some of them based on outright lies. If you're wondering why Obama is leading in the polls, this is why.
Charles, I've been an LGF fan since 2002, and during this election for the first time I'm feeling like your blog has become just the flip-side of Daily Kos. Hi, folks.
Last night I watched, "Sophie Scholl - The Final Days".
It's a powerful film about a small group of young Germans who published and distributed anti-Nazi leaflets during the war.
Now I'm going to have to buy a book and learn more about her and the other people in the White Rose resistance group.

Thanks for that....I'm helping Mr DT lose weight. He's never smoked or drank due to religious reasons.
Well, then the bottom line is there is no magic formula. And take that from someone who has bounced from average to 424 pounds at one time. I've done it all. I've tried it all, and what I have done in the last 2-3 years has been the most successful.
This time was the first time I tried just plain old keep physical, don't put calories in your mouth and maintain, maintian. It's really that simple, hard for a lot of us, but simple.

Why next week? Too early yet to get great bargains. For that we'll have to wait for a saturated market of "can't affords", like from 2 and 3 home-owning, over-leveraged families, or when all that sub-prime mortgage paper is gone through. No?

re: #193 stuiec
I concur. What is missing in this is an accurate assessment of Hillary's mentality.
Put simply, she is both power-mad and cunning. She has no loyalties to anyone except herself, and sees other people simply in terms of their usefulness to her in her quest for self-aggrandizement. With this mindset, she's not about to do something "for the good of the Party" that would in any way adversely impact her own ambitions.
Both she, and the Messiah, are Marxists at heart. But there's a fundamental difference, even there; he's basically a Leninist, and she's primarily a Stalinist with overtones of Trotsky. He's the "organization man" who dreams of being revered as a "secular saint". She's the vozhd (boss) who doesn't care what anyone else thinks about her as long as they do what she tells them- and know what will happen to them if they don't deliver.
Even if offered such a "deal", she wouldn't take it, precisely because it essentially takes her out of the running for the center seat, which is what she has lusted after since she was matriculating at Saul Alinsky's knee. For her, being that close to grabbing the reins of power, but not having them in her hands, would simply be unacceptable.
As for Obama offering it to her, he may be inexperienced, fantasy-prone, and ideological to the point of detachment from reality, but I doubt even he is asinine enough to attempt a repeat of the arrangement that Vladimir Ilyich had with Uncle Joe. Or at least, some of his advisors probably have enough knowledge of history to remember how that turned out.
cheers
eon

This may shock you, but most Americans actually can and do think independently of what the press tells them to think. The press can call it whatever they want, but the people who Obama needs to win over will see it as total capitulation to the Clintons, abject weakness, and bad judgment. In fact, Obama couldn't do anything to screw his chances with Hillary supporters more than to offer her the VP slot as (pardon the metaphor) "sloppy seconds." She'd pretend to consider it in order to whip up her PUMA base into a frenzy of outrage, then decline the offer -- and thus ensure that Obama definitely lost all chance of winning back her core supporters.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone in the Hillary camp was privately telling Obama that he needs to dump Biden for Hillary -- just to set him up for the rejection.

re: #193 stuiec
Look I am tired of everyone inflating things. He already has an overblown ego. p Why inflate things further? Why say, "....fall on his sword..."?
Perhaps, "fall on his dirk."
Yeah, that works.

Okay, howzaout this for a subject?
I have a well placd GOP friend on Capiol Hill who informed me yesterday that "The election is over. Obama is in." Why? "The trillion dollar bailout and the meltdown. The left will blame Bush and the right will hate the bailout."
That's the short version. Whaddayaall think?
Is said friend a confirmed moonbat anyway?
Trillion dollar bailout has blame enough for all, and Obama so far has only voted "present" on it, that's not the way for him to win anything.

I think the fact that he won the nomination shows how naive he and his advisors are. The winning strategy would have been to come in a close second to Hillary, demand and accept the VP slot, and then wait for the results in November: a win would give him 4 to 8 years of VP experience, and a loss would give him the ability to say, "See? I told you so" to the Democrat Party.
Unfortunately for him, he won the nomination. And unfortunately for him, he's just arrogant and vindictive enough to have spent the two months leading up to the convention rubbing it in the Clintons' faces, and to have passed over Hillary for the VP slot. (Not that she'd necessarily have accepted -- but the offer would have neutralized her as an enemy within the party.)
As you correctly set out, the enemies you have to worry about most are the ones nominally on your own side, because they're in a position to convince you to drop your guard -- and then strike without warning.

I just got off the phone with a longtime friend, who is like a second dad to me. He called me to tell me about a conversation he just had with one of his longtime friends, who works with one of the campaigns. I never asked which campaign. Take this with a grain of salt, I am, but, my friend is no bullshitter, is one of the most honest people I have ever met, and so are the friends he keeps. He tells me that Obama will be having an "October Surprise", by which, Joe Biden will be dropping out due to "Health Reasons", an annuerism and the Hildabeast will step in. Knowing my friend, and the caliber of his social circle, all staunch conservatives, I would not be surprised if it were correct, or close. I so hope it is NOT true.
Only if Obama also has a health issue, pulls a hamstring, and Hilda steps up to the front.
Also, of course, depends on the polls at that time. What if Obama/Biden is (heaven forefend) already ahead? What if Obama/Biden is already (please!) ten points and fifty electoral vote behind, would Hilda want to step in that?

Good Point
I don't see it happening (Hillary stepping in for Biden a month before the election) There is no "UPSIDE" for her. She stays out, Obama loses, Hillary is the party favorite for 2012. She acceptes VP, they lose, she's in Edwards country (losing VP on the ticket, next time around not much support) She accepts and they WIN , makes it hard for her to run against him in 2012 in a Dem primary

What I sent yesterday.
To: 'malcolm@conferenceofpresidents.org'; 'howard.rieger@ujc.org'; 'rubinm@ujafedny.org'; 'millerm@jcrcny.org'; 'sgutow@thejcpa.org'
Sirs and Madam:
As a Masorti Jew (a member of [congregation] in [city], California), I am deeply ashamed that respected Jewish organizations succumbed to partisan pressure and rescinded their invitation to Gov. Sarah Palin to address the rally against Ahmadinejad’s appearance at the United Nations. Why would you allow partisan organizations to dictate policy to you?
Gov. Palin’s appearance at the event would have ensured a far higher profile and far more extensive media coverage of the event, leading to many more American citizens learning about the grave danger Ahmadinejad’s regime poses to the USA as well as our ally Israel. Given the misperception many Americans have that America engaged in the Iraq War only at Israel’s bidding, it’s essential that the American public understand the threat Iran’s regime poses to the USA and American interests, and not regard it simply as a parochial concern of Israel and American Jews. Disinviting Gov. Palin was a major blunder and failure to advance the agenda against Iran.
Best regards,
[stuiec]

It was a bogus threat -- the IRS would not have done anything against the rally sponsors, and those sponsors should have stood erect and told the groups making the threat to pound sand.
A similar threat was made by the Clinton administration in the 2000 election cycle, against any churches which "engaged in political activity"- that being defined as saying anything in favor of policies the GOP supported, or even criticizing the behavior of, for example, a certain sitting President at the time. The term "separation of church and state" being used as the justification for the "policy".
One unintended consequence of this, for the federal government, was that for the first time in U.S. history, churches declined to allow the U.S. Census Bureau the use of their facilities for testing of prospective census takers. Citing "separation of church and state" as the reason for the refusal.

Just once, before I die Lord. Once. That's all I ask.
My mom's family is from Chicago. At my grandparents' 35th anniversary, the WHOLE family had a surprise party for them. As part of the program, my brother and our cousin (aged 9 and 7 at the time) dressed in White Sox and Cubs uniforms and sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."
Oh. how I'm pulling for the Cubs!

When the Red Sox won in '04, I got a call from my 87 yo grandmother. The last time the sox won, was the year she was born. Same month. I got a call after the final game ended around midnight, she was whooping and hollering. I had never known her to care much about baseball, and was surprised b the call. She informed me she had been preying for it all her life like all of us, but never mentioned it out loud so as not to jinx. Coulda knocked me over with that proverbial feather. Took her to opening day, '05. She still talks about it.

Can you imagine the sheer will it would have taken, though, for a person as nakedly ambitious as Obama to be in the position to win the nomination and to turn away from it? Somewhere along the way, he must have convinced himself that he was, in fact, qualified for and capable of doing the job of President. I hope that loss of perspective will result in a fatal blow to his Presidential aspirations for good -- but I doubt it will.

Well, I do blame the majority of the Jewish community for continuing to support a corrupt Democratic party - because they are majority Democrats themselves. I am furious about the rally and even more furious that Jewish community leaders are so gutless that they won't come out and state what a disaster the leftwing-led Democratic party has been for this nation. But hey! I'm not surprised, this is just history repeating itself. As for supporting Israel against Iran - feh! Hillary's and Obama's feelings are more important.

As I brought up in another thread, Biden is concurrently running for re-election in the US Senate.
If he has to drop his VP bid for "health reasons" he'd have to also drop his Senate bid for the same reasons (or at least make himself extremely vulnerable to being overturned in an upset challenge)
Why would he agree to do this? Why, especially, would he do it, when he's a total egomaniac, and has been eye-ing the White House for at least a decade?
I just don't see it happening.
As to Hilary as VP, that's a desperation move anyway. There is still bad blood between the Obama and Clinton camps. I could see Obama TRYING to make that move *if* he were convinced he would lose otherwise, but right now he's ahead (albeit marginally) according to most polls. He probably still thinks he can pull it off, and he well may be right.
So I discount this "Hilary Switch" theory.

I am hoping that a number of American Jews who were looking forward to hearing Sarah Palin speak will now see what Stalinists the Jewish Democratic groups are, and be willing to make a break with them. These Democratic groups are, after all, the same folks who now denounce Joe Lieberman as a traitor.
