Don't worry about your car; you won't be able to drive it, because it emits too much CO2 and besides, the gas will be too expensive.
So if you can't take the bus to work, you'll have to retire.

81 LesLein  Sun, Sep 21, 2008 3:34:50pm

It's revealing to go back in time (New York Times, 1999) to see what was said about subprime mortgages:

In addition, banks, thrift institutions and mortgage companies have been pressing Fannie Mae to help them make more loans to so-called subprime borrowers. These borrowers whose incomes, credit ratings and savings are not good enough to qualify for conventional loans, can only get loans from finance companies that charge much higher interest rates -- anywhere from three to four percentage points higher than conventional loans.

''Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements,'' said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer. ''Yet there remain too many borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.''

Obama's advisor solved that problem.

Nobody can say we weren't warned:

In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.

''From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,'' said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ''If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.''

Yet she has been accused of believing the world is 4,000 years old, that the Flintstones were actual people, that men and dinosaurs co-existed, and similar stuff. Wonder if Olberman will pay a $100 bucks for every lie about Palin?

True. Several Trout farms in Southern Idaho have filed a lawsuit over water rights. If they succeed in getting the junior water rights curtailed, Eastern Idaho farmers who are also ground pumpers are going to have to idle a lot of ground next year.

But I don't think the problem is as bad as she is making it out to be.

It depends are where you are. It is a global problem tho'. The Saudis are no longer going to be growing wheat in a year or two because the irrigation requirements are draining the aquifers and they need the water for urban areas - and they are experts at desalination. It's a serious problem in China, where they have land that theoretically is arable - but no water.

Wanna talk about topsoil? No? Ok, hubby wants me upstairs for the Yankee stuff in a few minutes anyway.

Yes. Take Gaza, for example. Greenhouses used to hide tunnels; metal shops only building rockets; etc.

Does anyone know that Senate bill that Biden authored that essentially allowed the banks and other lenders to do exactly what they did to get the nation into this financial mess? I believe it was passed in either '99 or '00. Still researching.

After all, Pelosi and the Jackass Party take zero blame for what's up. What a pompous bitch she is!

It was Clinton who pushed for regulations promoting subprime loans. This was part of a larger banking law. From 1999:

And up until a few weeks ago, the Clinton Administration itself had threatened a veto of the legislation as it took various forms that raised a series of White House objections. In recent months, the administration objected most sharply to the issue of rules requiring that banks make loans in minority and low-income communities where they operate.

Gramm, an outspoken conservative who opposes the rules, last year managed to kill a similar bill that would have overhauled the community lending laws. The White House insisted that banks be required to have a strong track record in local loan-making as a condition for being allowed to expand into other financial activities.

re: #112 jones

Personally I think the problem is localized. For example. In Southern Idaho (high desert country) water is a problem. The farmers in Eastern Idaho have put so much land under cultivation that there wasn't enough surface water to irrigate it, so they drilled wells and use center pivots or the older wheel line sprinklers and have ended up draining the aquifer. This has in turn led to a shortage of fresh water down stream and hence the resulting lawsuit demanding a curtailment of their pumping. So in our area it isn't that there isn't enough fresh water, it's that it's being used for the for the wrong things.

The new Obama ad in Ohio is irritating in so many ways. He says that he thinks about his grandmother who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management despite many years of being passed over for promotions because she's a woman. He finishes in a high frenzy saying it's time to keep the promise of equal pay for an equal days work. "I want my daughters to have the exact same opportunities as your sons!"

Now, wasn't his grandmother the vice-president of a bank? Since when is that middle management? There there's this equality thing. How come Hillary was passed over when she is more qualified than he is? Hmmm? Then there's this daughter thing. His daughters don't have the same opportunities as my son. They have MORE opportunities because of affirmative action and the Civil Rights Act. So, hey, how about we get rid of those two discriminatory programs?

(cross-posted from an earlier thread)

Note this interesting post regarding professions of accountability, just below this Victor Hanson article:

J.E. Dyer comment:

One thing this great VDH piece reminds me of is a particular truth that has come home to me in the last few years.

It is this: That there is a type of wisdom that accrues to people in what I call the “accountable professions,” that people in the others may never develop.

In these remarkably wealthy, division-of-labor days, it is possible for millions of humans to get through life without ever doing anything for which the consequences of failure are concrete, immediate, and dangerous. This is the case for many in politics, academia, and the commmentariat.

In many disciplines, the question can legitimately be asked: how do we even know if someone has failed?

But we can’t say that about farming, or plumbing — or firefighting, practicing medicine, fighting wars, accounting, construction, banking, cleaning carpets, running a business, or raising children. The measures of effectivenes in these walks of life are exacting and often merciless. Irresponsible experimentation is much less common in these callings, and accountability is usually too swift to admit of buck-passing. Engineers, carpenters, bus drivers, and daycare workers all share this work environment. We can tell, very quickly, if they screwed up.

Not so of many academic disciplines, many politicians (legislators in particular), or pundits. We appreciate and thank them if they are good at what they do; if they are right; if they do courageous and inspiring things. But nothing much happens to them when they’re wrong — and there is, in fact, a whole segment of society to which they can repair to lick their wounds and be lionized.

Sep 19, 2008 - 9:29 am

That concept plainly points out the major differences between PROFESSIONS OF ACCOUNTABILITY and PROFESSIONS OF NO ACCOUNTABILITY.

Thus, the accrued ACTUAL wisdom of over a dozen years of personal accountability which Sarah Palin has acquired, versus that which Barack Obama or good ol' Joe "I think I have a much higher IQ than you do" Biden, and all of their fellow travelers, probably never will acquire. It just goes right over their head, as they're busy lording it over blue-collar workers and digging their hole that much deeper.

I just flashed on Harvard-trained Obama needing a teleprompter in every room of his house (including bathroom and bedroom), and even out riding his bike.

The REAL Wizard of Oz is sitting behind Obama's teleprompter curtain, typing out those inspiring words that he's learned to read so convincingly. Sure, he's charismatic! What do you expect? That's what it took for him to get where he is. But beneath the fluff, there's only more and more telepromptered fluff.

If Barack Hussein Obama was a pilot, just who would volunteer to ride in his airplane?

(As Toto knocks over Obama's teleprompter) "I AM THE ONE! ...PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE TELEPROMPTER! THE TELEPROMPTER! THE TELEPROMPTER! THE TELEPROMPTER! THE TELEPROMPTER! THE GODDAMN TELEPROMPTER! All right, y'all. We're gonna get this crisis fixed. That's right. We're gonna get it fixed. God's on our side. We've got good people. Gonna get this thing fixed for us..."

I logged on a few minutes ago and 34% percent had voted YES, 66% NO.

Obama is already offering positions in his Cabinet. 6 weeks BEFORE the election...

By the way, he has implicitly instructed Pelosi to reject the government's plan to prevent a financial meltdown. We know why: Hussein needs the country to collapse so that he can go up in the week's polls... What a patriot!

re: #175 ciaospirit

Compensation figures for his legislative staff reveal that Obama pays women 83 cents for every dollar his men make.

A watchdog group called LegiStorm posts online the salaries for Capitol Hill staffers. "We have no political affiliations and no political purpose except to make the workings of Congress as transparent as possible," its Web site explains. Parsing LegiStorm's official data, gleaned from the secretary of the Senate, offers a fascinating glimpse at pay equity in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body.

The most recent statistics are for the half-year from Oct. 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, excluding interns and focusing on full-time personnel. For someone who worked only until, say, last February 29, extrapolating up to six months' service simplifies this analysis. Doubling these half-year figures illustrates how a year's worth of Senate employees' paychecks should look.

Based on these calculations, Obama's 28 male staffers divided among themselves total payroll expenditures of $1,523,120. Thus, Obama's average male employee earned $54,397.

Obama's 30 female employees split $1,354,580 among themselves, or $45,152, on average.

Why this disparity? One reason may be the underrepresentation of women in Obama's highest-compensated ranks. Among Obama's five best-paid advisers, one was a woman. Among his top 20, seven were women.

Again, on average, Obama's female staffers earn just 83 cents for every dollar his male staffers make. This figure certainly exceeds the 77-cent threshold that Obama's campaign Web site condemns. However, 83 cents do not equal $1.00. In spite of this 17-cent gap between Obama's rhetoric and reality, he chose to chide GOP presidential contender John McCain on this issue.

OT: Today's stupid Evolutionary statement:

Differentiating seafood from other animal food sources

Pescatarians may believe that seafood is more acceptable to consume while killing land-dwelling animals is less acceptable. Generally these arguments fall into two categories: the belief that the ethics of slaughtering and consuming animals fall into a spectrum -- from microbe, to cockroach, and so on, until Chimp and Neanderthal -- putting more primitive (non-mammalian) sea creatures nearer the beginning of the spectrum; or that the environmental impact of farming sea-dwelling creatures is smaller.

Speaking as one of those who toils in the vineyards of the legal profession, I am f*cking sick and tired of lawyer jokes.

My clients, as a class, do the stupidest things, then come into my office and demand that I magically make it all better. They don't want to pay the cost of bailing themselves out from their own stupidity, and when you tell them what to do to fix the hole they've dug for themselves, they quote Meatloaf: "I'll do anything that you want, but I won't do that."

Lawyers grow gray trying to get clients to act intelligently in their own self-interest, and get crapped on continually for trying to rescue clients from the results of their own folly. If clients find that expensive, it is because there is a stupid tax.

i call it an aggravation tax.

If you read this, I dunno if it's true that a dog can't think at all. Cats may have some rudimentary thinking ability also. Dolphins, almost certainly. Pigs are supposed to be quite intelligent.

But from a purely evolutionary perspective, there's really no such thing as "more" or "less" evolved. By some standards, bacteria, viruses, and insects are more highly evolved than we are, because in terms of sheer numbers they are MUCH more successful than we are.

The jury is still out on whether our large brains are an evolutionary boon or an evolutionary liability. No other creature has developed the tools for its own destruction.

No problem; I'm sure I'll be able to sit up and take soup in a day or two.

Seriously, I take very little here personally, and didn't take that personally either--I just think that it is necessary for people to remember that lawyering is a profession which is filled with people who try to do what their clients claim they want done, and more often than not have to do it over the opposition of the very people that have hired them.

Those of us who've been doing this for some time are well aware that this is because the client is coming to us filled with embarrassment and self-loathing for having acted like an idiot in the first place, and is trying to recover his or her self-esteem by behaving towards the lawyer they have designated to help them the way s/he should have behaved in the first place towards the person who is giving them grief. But it can be wearying.

And, pity the poor paralegal who has to act as the gate-keeper!

Abe Lincoln, out riding the circuit, stops for the night at an inn. His fellow lawyers are all crowded around the fireplace, smoking and swapping tall tales. One calls out, "Hey Abe, you look like you've been to Hell and back!"

"I have," said Abe.

"What's it like in Hell?"

For every 320 Americans there is a lawyer — indeed, with 799,960 lawyers among a population of 255,600,000, America may have the highest proportion of lawyers per capita in the world. In England, there are 694 Englishmen per lawyer, in France 2,461 Frenchmen per lawyer and in Japan 8,195 Japanese per lawyer. Lest you think the Japanese are exceptionally poorly served, you may wish to reflect that there are 15,748 Koreans per lawyer, with a mere 2,813 lawyers for Korea's population of 44,300,000.*

Yeah, it's a shame the image most people have of Abe is that sad emaciated portrait taken near the end of the war. Abe was a tall, strong, and strapping fellow. I read a book that argued that had Booth missed, or his gun misfired, he would have been no match for Lincoln.

John Wilkes Booth was the Matt Damon of his day.

Part of the problem is, people who might otherwise become doctors become lawyers instead because it's too expensive to be a doctor. There's a personal injury law firm here that advertises itself as "lawyers who are doctors," 2 brothers both with medical degrees. So they use their medical degrees to stick it to the people who are trying to save lives.

I think some of our poodles can think. You see them looking at a piece of food, and you can almost tell they're thinking "How can I get that and not get caught".
Or after one dog goes upstairs at night, and I sit in the living room with two others, they used to go in the first dog's crate. Then he didn't want to go upstairs, until I closed his crate in front of him. Then he'd go, knowing another dog wouldn't get into his space.

I just watched that video and I have to tell you I was disturbed by the racially offensive imagery showing The One in a pig abattoir. Or it was a subtle wedge issue meme designed to alienate the important vegan lesbian vote from Obama. But for sure it was racist.

As irritating as that Ad may be, when you have a complicit Media feeding you talking points, ie., Rueters - it can get even worse. Maybe I am prescient but I think I just figured out the next talking point on why Obama was right about the surge - we never succeeded - it was only a matter of ethnic cleansing...

Expensive, though; he needed a special small backhoe that could get up our hill.

I wonder why some people that eat meat criticize hunters? Maybe they have never visited a factory farm or a slaughterhouse. A packing plant has a "knock time". That is when the assembly line is started up and the first cow has a bolt shot into it's head and it gets chained up for slaughter. Every piece of meat has a bit of inhumanity attached to it. My old man always taught me gun safety and to respect the wildlife. He loved animals. We would only kill what we could eat. He watched many more animals in their habitat then he ever killed.

I don't hunt anymore. I remember what grueling work it was at 10 years old carrying around a shotgun in 4 foot drifts of snow. It does build some character, especially when the old man wants to hunt from 6 AM to dark thirty.

We used to buy cute baby chicks by the box full. They lived in squalid henhouses that looked a lot like a prison. The manure would get two feet deep. The chicks grew up to be mean and to provide cheaps eggs. Nothing like seeing my grandmother chase down a chicken with a coat hanger and wring it's neck. That was dinner. Plucking them was miserable. I could never do it well enough. McNuggets are so much easier.

60 Minutes made sure to give Obama the advantage of going last in both segments. They also used those awful over the shoulder shots (McCain's shoulder) like they did with Sarah Palin. None for Obama of the parts that I watched. All of Obama's shots were very flattering. They showed McCain's nice home and land in Arizona. Obama followed and the first thing he said was that he came from "humble" beginnings. Obama also gives the impression that he was raised in Kansas. When was that? Anyone notice how many of the greens are anti-capitalist and pro-socialist? And communism and socialism has a god-awful record of pollution. I'll never forget the picture of Russian children swimming in a radioactive nuclear bomb crater. They talk a good game, but they expose their population to pollution 20 times worse than America...
/And the MSM buries the story!

"Green" politics are simply a socialist special interest. The Euro Green movement is nothing more than a thinly veiled way to run a communist party without the stigma of carrying the actual name.

It is a non-partisan wedge issue that is unecessarily politicized, with the panacea for modern ecological dangers (and everything else, ever) having already been provided by Karl Marx, prophetically, over a hundred years prior.

The whole 'green' movement in America isn't really any different. It is the same with so many 'counter culture' movements that have absolutely nothing to do with anything that they profess to champion. They are politicized specifically to appeal to as many segments of single issue voters as possible.

A lot of that is being exposed even to the electorate now with the rabid attack on Palin by these 3rd waver 'Feminists' who are just off shoots of those 60s era prominent 'Feminists', whom had all previously been prominent Marxists until they got on the special interest bandwagon and put a smiley faced approach to their promotion of a totalitarian ideology. Why, we want to make everyone equal! Who can disagree? We want to save the planet? Who can disagree with that movement?

They would gladly see all people, men and women lose hard fought for civil rights as long as it damaged and worked to dismantle the institutions of capitalism and western culture, to pave the way for their antithetical political ideology. They wouldn't do much to save the planet either.

The Kyoto Fraud that exempted 'developing' countries shows that, and so does Earth Priestess Gore's Quad-Mansion, Jetsetting, Motorcade parading eco-nightmare lifestyle. If it is reality, or even if Gore just believes what he preaches, he would be an inhuman monster. I'm going to give the 'Greens' and their Priests the benefit of the doubt and assume, rather than being Captain Planet villians wantonly and willingly destroying the planet, that they are just Commie frauds bent instead.

Also, has anyone mentioned the Community Lending Act as the source of all this crap yet?

Do you mean the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA)? Great IBD editorial about it here. So SOMEBODY's mentioning it -- just not the leftist-dominated MSM.

Need to save it for purification purposes. So you can love that dirty water.

I watched on How It's Made a while back how they purify water so it's fit to drink. What they start with is disgusting. Ewww!
I think this show is from the Canadian East Coast - out here in the NW, we get our water from mountain reservoirs.

My question...who is the chairman of the banking committee, what did he know, and when did he know it? Also, has anyone mentioned the Community Lending Act as the source of all this crap yet?

I'm finding little on the about the Community Lending Act. Might it be known as the Community Reinvestment Act ?

watch it, link to 100 consertive sites, link to the RNC, have them link to other sites, it will stay the same %'s, its pure liberal PBS bull shit.

Was watching WETA earlier, D.C.s public station. Had a nice 30min docu thoroughly eviscerating the Constitution. Gave a good explanation of its status as a 'living breathing document'.

How it is apparently impossible to tell what obscure terms like 'cruel and unusual' actually mean. It is a shame that late 18th century America, much like ancient Atlantis, Thule, and Lemuria before it have become nothing like myth and we have no historical records of this fantastical time to tell us what the Founding Fathers might have possible meant by their esoteric, and almost indecipherable phrasings.

I hear a lot of complaints about the cost of our top notch military from leftists all the time. I wonder how much money we could save by immediately defunding and then retroactively fining overtly political entities yet publically funded organizations like PBS and the ACLU?

re: #432 StinkHammer

The revisions also allowed for the first time the securitization of CRA-regulated loans containing subprime mortgages. The changes came as radical "housing rights" groups led by ACORN lobbied for such loans. ACORN at the time was represented by a young public-interest lawyer in Chicago by the name of Barack Obama.

HUD, in turn, pressured Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to purchase more subprime mortgages, and Fannie and Freddie, in turn, donated to the campaigns of leading Democrats like Barney Frank and Pelosi who throttled investigations into fraud at the agencies.

Barney Frank is the current Chairman of the House Banking Committee. Chris Dodd, Chairman Senate Banking Committee. Chris Dodd is also linked to the Countrywide scandal. If I were a Democrat, I would do everything within my power to deny deny deny until this election is over, because it looks like the housing collapse falls squarely at their feet, to include Obama. And of course, that is exactly what the Democrats are doing.

re: #425 yah

I know. When I read back up the posts and saw that the percentages hadn't changed in quite awhile, I wondered, "What the hell?" The stats wizards in here explained it so well that even I could understand.

Our congresswoman said awhile back that the illegal immigration issue doesn't poll high. Well, no, and it isn't going to, as long as respondents are asked which issue concerns them the most - the economy or the Iraq war. But I guarantee you that people are really fed up. The US is losing manufacturing jobs, and 600+ of the remaining ones were held in a single plant in MS? And neither McCain nor O-word addresses this issue at all. They're fighting over which of them can deliver the most effective Spanish-language ad.

Polls - *spit*.

And Barack Obama is number 2 in contributions from Fannie Mae, despite being in the Senate for only 4 years. If I were McCain, I would ask Obama how he supposes he was able to rise to the number two position in contributions from Fannie Mae, ahead of John Kerry, 2nd only to Chris Dodd (Chairman of the Banking Committee), after only 4 years? I would pay to see the look on Obama's face. No teleprompter in the world can answer that one. What did Fannie Mae get for its money? I know exactly what they got. They got protection from investigators looking into its practices...practices that led to the near collapse of our economy last week.

Nope, it won't happen. I have quite a few friends who still Jimmy Carter was a good guy and a great humanitarian.

The liberal mindset is such that no amount of new information can seep through the rock-hard skull to reach the brain.

That's why we are doomed.

In other words, today's "predatory lending" was "social justice redress of historical lending inequities"--until the bill came due, and the reason for the lending inequities (the inability of some people to repay what they borrowed) was re-confirmed.

Well the answer to historical inequities wasn't to give more handouts aka "subprime mortgages", but to educate minorities so they could get better paying jobs and actually afford real mortgages.

It's only patriotic when it's dissent against Republicans. The typical double standard. Like McCain's 13 cars is awful, but Kerry's was none of our business. Larry Craig's sexual proclivities...awful...Barney Frank...OK. GW Bush guard service...awful...Clinton Draft Dodger...no problemo.

Oh yeah, and if you ask a liberal they'll say that 8 years of Bush justifies 100 years of left-hate. Anything goes with them.

The dems consider it patriotic only if you criticize Bush and the Republicans. Can't criticize 0bama. They can't yet call it unpatriotic, so they call it racist.

So Palin is not a Mosoe murderer, eh? Well maybe you can explain this Mr. Smarty-pants: the moose aren't taking this sitting down anymore & are starting to fight back against the redneck rightwing Christian moose haters.

The moose insurgency EID!

About 100 miles south of Anchorage my brother and his wife were going 50 mph when a moose ran directly out onto the highway in front of them, creating a mess much like those photos. Their SUV had a strong roll-cage so they didn't get squashed by the moose. Their car stopped dead in the middle of the road, with the dead moose lying in front of the car. Sis-in-law had a lap full of 5 gallons of steaming moose nuggets, dropped there when the moose pushed in the windshield. Bro said she wasn't easy to live with for awhile.
