Unknown score written by Mozart found in France
Mon Sep 22, 2008 11:36pm EDT

NANTES, France (Reuters) - A French municipal library has discovered a musical score handwritten by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in its archives, the Nantes town hall said on Thursday.

The one-page work, donated to the town by a private collector at the end of the 19th century, was until recently thought to be a copy rather than an original.

The unpublished score, measuring 16 cm by 29 cm (6.5 by 11.5 inches), is thought to have been written around 1787, according to an expert musicologist from the Mozarteum university in the composer's native city of Salzburg in Austria.

The score is undergoing a second round of expert investigations, Nantes authorities said.

I'm looking forward to hearing it played in the future. :)

But PUMAPac may still be open. They've had some great discussions lately on "race" and this election.

I go to some of their sites when I need a bit of an emotional "pick-me-up". They're always working to defeat Obama, in one way or another.

If all this is true to Roggio's information, the boat was headed for the Suez Canal - into the Mediterranean. For what?

The MV Iran Deyanat set sail from Nanjing, China, at the end of July and, according to its manifest, planned to travel to Rotterdam, where it would unload 42,500 tons of iron ore and "industrial products" purchased by a German client. Its arrival in the Gulf of Aden, Somali officials tell The Long War Journal, was suspiciously early. According to a publicly available status report on the IRISL Web site, the ship reached the Gulf on August 20 and was scheduled to reach the Suez Canal on August 27 - a seven day journey. "Depending on the speed of the ship," Puntland Minister of Ports Ahmed Siad Nur said in a phone interview on Saturday, "it should take between 4 and 5 days to reach Suez."

Seems any uranium on an Iranian ship would be heading toward Iran.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Didn't you have a question for me?

True - Slow overnight thread right? Background (trying to make a long story short) - I have observed, in my family and friends' families around me, little girls who are very outwardly gifted when they are very young, go on to struggle as they got into high school and college. Specifically, being pretty clearly analytical and good at math, then later not being good at/showing interest in math and sciences later on.

It seems to me something programmed into our cultural milieu, or rather that of the human race as a whole, that wants to tell girls they need to go do something else, leave this engineering/science/other-analytical-study thing to the boys.

Now I've got a little girl, she's 2 1/2, and she's unbelievably sharp. I just wonder how to keep that spirit alive, how to make sure she tells the messages sent by society to go to hell. Because there's so much that's out of my hands, and so much that's entrenched in the way we live as a whole that wants to keep her from being all she can be.

Or I should say be all she wants to be, because I want her to do whatever she wants. I just want to make sure that "whatever she wants" remains as open to her as it should.

Wow -- requiring the Defense Department to operate with cost-efficiency -- downright anti-American.

The difference is that I trust that McCain will ensure that the Defense Department will be capable of fulfilling its various missions to defend the United States, whereas I believe Obama doesn't actually care about that. An Obama presidency would be Bill Clinton's abject failure in Somalia writ large -- and it wouldn't be just a score of Army Rangers that would pay the price.

Monday is my TV night, and tonight was the first good one in a while.
Watching the newest exciting episode of the Sarah Connor Chronicals, I started to wonder. Has anyone else noticed the parallels between Sic-’em Sarah Connor and our own Sic-’em Sarah Palin?

Courageous, principled Sarah,
Both good looking, hard loving moms.
Both value ALL human life, even those with different agendas.
Both proficient in many types of weaponry.
Both are standing up to an evil that thinks of human life as a blight/parasite on the planet
Both must battle deceptive and elaborate plots to defeat her.
Both have been attacked by established powers as being dangerous and even insane .
Both realize to prevent evil from spreading, you have to fight hard for good,
Never blinking.

I like that.

Yes- girls are discouraged to follow through on math and science. Were I to have a daughter, I would get her engineering toys as a starting point. There are many varieties these days. I would get her involved in tools and fixing stuff. I would get her lots of science books. Puzzles, analytical toys and games- things like that.

I would also allow her her femininity. Sewing, cooking- these too require math skills. Let her be a girl, but teach her she can be anything and the boys can't hold her back and not to let the girls hold her back either. The lessons of this election should show us that women's sexism can and does impact other women just as much as the sexism of men.

The aim, [said federal regulators], was always the same: To shape the company's books, not in response to accepted accounting rules but in a way that made it appear that the company had reached earnings targets, thus triggering the maximum possible payout for executives..." re: #58 Intrepid

I think Obama is totally unprepared for campaigning in the YouTube era. Before YouTube, it was perfectly feasible to deliver one message to one audience and then deliver the opposite message to another audience, and expect that the two audiences would never compare notes.

But today, if you tell Muslim-American groups one thing and Jewish-American groups another, the two messages can appear side-by-side on blogs of both groups. You can't get away with going to the Knesset and talk about an undivided Jerusalem and then go to Muslim and Arab and pro-Palestinian leftist groups and tell them you weren't serious. You can't say you never supported infanticide and expect that people won't hear the justification you gave when you cast four votes against born-alive infant protections. You can't talk about your wonderful Christian pastor and not expect that his racist, anti-Semitic and anti-American rants won't become universally known.

How about if your libs take responsibility for their greed and their mismanagement of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac during the Clinton years? The libs were in charge all the way up until now, not the conservatives. And the chickens have come home to roost. True to form, however, they are blaming and pointing fingers at everyone but themselves. But that's to be expected.

'night all...

GWB has been president for eight years; Republicans controlled Congress for six of those eight years. The heads of the regulatory agencies were appointed by Republicans. Like Obama, McCain has taken lots of money from the financial sector.

The Dems may not have entirely clean hands, but they are hardly alone in that respect.

That's a start.

First two - he's stuck to his guns regarding tax cuts, no matter the consequences. Second, he got an endorsement that he subsequently rejected. Yet he did not spent almost 20 years in the man's church.

When will we see Barack Obama come out and unequivocally reject "Black Liberation Theology"? He sat in that church for almost two decades, was married in that church, had his children baptised there and had them sit through most of their lives listening to that indoctrination.

He changed his mind about offshore drilling - GOOD FOR HIM! Not a minus at all.

His immigration stance is what most conservatives fault him for. He's for a form of amnesty that most conservatives don't want, yet he's still for it.

You show me one instance in which Barack Obama has stood against the democrats during his Senate career. One instance. He's been a party man all along. Or he hasn't voted. Much easier to skip out, I guess.

It's a contest between a "Party Man" and a "Maverick". Guess who most of America wants?

I'm not saying McCain doesn't know a lot about the world. I think he does. But this article is not proof of it. He is campaigning full-time and preparing for a nationally televised debate at the end of the week. I doubt he has a lot of time to craft detailed op-eds. As the paper says, Obama has been invited to submit something, and, I suspect such an article will, indeed, appear shortly, also making reference to the topics you mention.

And all this goes for your own kids, and to a little lesser degree other kids that you're around a lot.

(since he is giving his name to it)

It'd suck to learn that some staffer or floosy writes his stuff for him on a whim like this. People here in Australia wake up in the morning, open this particular national newspaper, and I assume would expect it to be at least a little honest!

I'd wager that if you sat McCain and Obama down and gave each a test on the articles they'd supposedly written, McCain would score rather higher on what was published in his name than Obama would on what was published in his. And McCain's writers have more material to work with in terms of McCain's past policy statements and proposals.

re: #105 HD Woman

Isn't it a bit more plausible that McCain dictated the rough outline and a staffer wrote it based on Senator MCCain's instructions?

I think either could be true. Presumably, he has "area experts" (i.e., experts in various regions) who would know what to say. And, to Aussie Stinger, I wouldn't presume to say what the details of the internal process are, except that a task like this would go to a staffer/advisor in some way. Whether and in what form it would come back to McCain for approval I couldn't say.

But i want to be clear that, by saying McCain likely did very little of the writing of this piece, I'm not disparaging McCain in this area. I do think he knows a lot about history, the rest of the world, defense alliances and such.

True -

Now I've got a little girl, she's 2 1/2, and she's unbelievably sharp. I just wonder how to keep that spirit alive, how to make sure she tells the messages sent by society to go to hell. Because there's so much that's out of my hands, and so much that's entrenched in the way we live as a whole that wants to keep her from being all she can be.

.

Encourage her interests, protect her from poison minds. My daughter was, fortunately, encouraged to take advanced math and science classes in high school. She continued on to a degree in Applied Science. Girls / women are capable of doing whatever they choose to take on. If the choice involves heavy lifting, they find a way to accomplish it. I don't normally comment on military matters in order not to make a fool of myself. But what you suggest sounds like a good beginning, what you'd do before putting boots on the ground. I don't think you could change the regime without troops there.

if the country was stable, you'd likely be right, but it's not: it's an autocratic collection of thugs trying to keep the lid on an unhappy populace. cut it up into sections (the geography helps), destroy the governments C3I and ability to influence the population, and encourage dissent that already exists via satellite TV, and by taking out any reserve transmitters the govt pops up with, along with the occasional night time stealth raid on targets of opportunity in support of uprisings.

don't mention anything, don't claim anything, just do it and sit back and watch what happens....... "We're as surprised as anyone at the breadth and power of the opposition in Iran..."

The close and documented links of Obama, the liar, and Ayers, the unrepentant terrorist, are becoming clearer and clearer. Stanley Kurtz publishes his first article on their relationship and their shared radical educational goals:

Obama and Ayers
Pushed Radicalism
On Schools

Excerpts:

The Chicago Annenberg Challenge was created ostensibly to improve Chicago's public schools. The funding came from a national education initiative by Ambassador Walter Annenberg. In early 1995, Mr. Obama was appointed the first chairman of the board, which handled fiscal matters. Mr. Ayers co-chaired the foundation's other key body, the "Collaborative," which shaped education policy. ...

One unsettled question is how Mr. Obama, a former community organizer fresh out of law school, could vault to the top of a new foundation? In response to my questions, the Obama campaign issued a statement saying that Mr. Ayers had nothing to do with Obama's "recruitment" to the board. The statement says Deborah Leff and Patricia Albjerg Graham (presidents of other foundations) recruited him. Yet the archives show that, along with Ms. Leff and Ms. Graham, Mr. Ayers was one of a working group of five who assembled the initial board in 1994. Mr. Ayers founded CAC and was its guiding spirit. No one would have been appointed the CAC chairman without his approval. ...

CAC translated Mr. Ayers's radicalism into practice. Instead of funding schools directly, it required schools to affiliate with "external partners," which actually got the money. Proposals from groups focused on math/science achievement were turned down. Instead CAC disbursed money through various far-left community organizers, such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (or Acorn).

Mr. Obama once conducted "leadership training" seminars with Acorn, and Acorn members also served as volunteers in Mr. Obama's early campaigns. External partners like the South Shore African Village Collaborative and the Dual Language Exchange focused more on political consciousness, Afrocentricity and bilingualism than traditional education. CAC's in-house evaluators comprehensively studied the effects of its grants on the test scores of Chicago public-school students. They found no evidence of educational improvement. ...

Mr. Ayers is the founder of the "small schools" movement (heavily funded by CAC), in which individual schools built around specific political themes push students to "confront issues of inequity, war, and violence." He believes teacher education programs should serve as "sites of resistance" to an oppressive system. (His teacher-training programs were also CAC funded.) The point, says Mr. Ayers in his "Teaching Toward Freedom," is to "teach against oppression," against America's history of evil and racism, thereby forcing social transformation.

The Obama campaign has cried foul when Bill Ayers comes up, claiming "guilt by association." Yet the issue here isn't guilt by association; it's guilt by participation. As CAC chairman, Mr. Obama was lending moral and financial support to Mr. Ayers and his radical circle. That is a story even if Mr. Ayers had never planted a single bomb 40 years ago.

The Net is certainly trouncing newspapers, but newspapers are still the quoted source for much of the information that ends up online.

TV News is the main way people get information and the libs control it. The media has got to be worth at least 20% of Democrat votes. Take away their voice and who would seek out liberal opinion (in the way they have to seek out conservative opinion)

since riding a motorcycle is no more a right than is driving, the states have a right to regulate in anyway they wish, hence helmet laws.

The state is the goverment of the people, if the people are smart and active enough, the people wishes rule in place of the insurance companies that try to pay off government officials.

rather than force this issue, with the resultant downside to society (reduced organ donations from accident victims) why not do a trade off?

I'd rather not "trade off" my freedoms.

Bells ringing....I AGREE WITH BILL CLINTON! I AGREE WITH BILL CLINTON!

Speaking to reporters before his Clinton Global Initiative meeting, the former president described Palin's appeal by adding, "People look at her, and they say, 'All those kids. Something that happens in everybody's family. I'm glad she loves her daughter and she's not ashamed of her. Glad that girl's going around with her boyfriend. Glad they're going to get married.'"

Clinton said voters would think, "I like that little Down syndrome kid. One of them lives down the street. They're wonderful children. They're wonderful people. And I like the idea that this guy does those long-distance races. Stayed in the race for 500 miles with a broken arm. My kind of guy."

Palin, the governor of Alaska, became an overnight star when Republican presidential candidate John McCain tapped her for his running mate. Her family, including her Down syndrome baby, Trig, her pregnant 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, and her husband, Todd, four-time winner of the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race, have garnered intense media interest.

"I get this," Clinton said. "My view is ... why say, ever, anything bad about a person? Why don't we like them and celebrate them and be happy for her elevation to the ticket? And just say that she was a good choice for him and we disagree with them?"

The MV Iran Deyanat set sail from Nanjing, China, at the end of July and, according to its manifest, planned to travel to Rotterdam, where it would unload 42,500 tons of iron ore and "industrial products" purchased by a German client.

SNIP

Suspicion has also been cast on the ship's crew, half of which is almost entirely staffed by Iranians - a large percentage of Iranian nationals for a standard merchant vessel. Somali officials say that the ship has a crew of 29 men, including a Pakistani captain, an Iranian engineer, 13 other Iranians, 3 Indians, 2 Filipinos, and 10 Eastern Europeans, possibly Croatian.

The MV Iran Deyanat was brought to Eyl, a sleepy fishing village in northeastern Somalia, and was secured by a larger gang of pirates - 50 onboard and 50 onshore. Within days, pirates who had boarded the ship developed strange health complications, skin burns and loss of hair. Independent sources tell The Long War Journal that a number of pirates have also died. "Yes, some of them have died. I do not know exactly how many but the information that I am getting is that some of them have died," Andrew Mwangura, Director of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Program, said Friday when reached by phone in Mombasa.

News about the illness and the toxic cargo quickly reached Garowe, seat of the government for the autonomous region of Puntland. Angered over the wave of piracy and suspicious about the Iranian ship, authorities dispatched a delegation led by Minister of Minerals and Oil Hassan Allore Osman to investigate the situation on September 4. Osman also confirmed to The Long War Journal that during the six days he negotiated with the pirates members of the syndicate had become sick and died. "That ship is unusual," he said. "It is not carrying a normal shipment."

If anyone had any doubts about the ONLY motive Democrats are delaying the "bailout" - which they will approve in the end, anyway:

Democrats in the Senate and House believe that if they can string out negotiations on the federal financial markets bailout through Tuesday, "we can get everything we want and more, including solidifying the Obama campaign," says a Senate Banking Committee staffer working for the majority.

"Let's see what the White House has to say when the market is cratering again."

Ibrahim Mohammad-Nabi, Deputy CEO of Iran's shipping company also confirmed that no Russian or Syrian nationals were aboard the vessel, rejecting claims made by another Puntland minister that an international crew operates the ship.

DoT press release on the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.

Washington, DC--The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control today designated the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), and 18 other affiliated entities, for providing logistical services to Iran's Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL).

"Not only does IRISL facilitate the transport of cargo for U.N. designated proliferators, it also falsifies documents and uses deceptive schemes to shroud its involvement in illicit commerce," said Stuart Levey, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. "IRISL's actions are part of a broader pattern of deception and fabrication that Iran uses to advance its nuclear and missile programs. That conduct should give pause to any financial institution or business still choosing to deal with Iran."

Our government designated IRISL 20 days after it was seized. Before 9/4/08, the pirates were was getting sick and dying.

Once in direct contact, the pirates told Osman that they had attempted to inspect the ship's seven cargo containers after they developed health complications but the containers were locked. The crew claimed that they did not have the "access codes" and could not open them. The delegation secured contact with the captain and the engineer by cell phone and demanded to know the nature of the cargo, however, Osman says that "they were saying different things to different people." Initially they said that the cargo contained "crude oil" but then claimed it contained "minerals."

"The secrecy is not clear to us," Mwangura said about the cargo. "Our sources say it contains chemicals, dangerous chemicals." IRISL has flatly denied the ship is carrying a "dangerous consignment" and has threatened legal action against Mwangura.

The Overreaction against Islami Charities.

However, from the evidence available at the time of writing, one of the repercussions of 9/11 has been hyper scrutinization of Islamic charities by the United States government that uncomfortably recalls the McCarthy period.

SNIP

But is it necessary to dignify the publication of such analysis, fortified by extracts from heavily biased intelligence websites, with the authority
of major university presses?1 Such books disrespect the normal requirement that serious social researchers should check their information from different sources, make allowances for their own prejudices and those of informants, and situate their findings in a broad political context. Two recently published books of this kind on Islamic charities allow no voice whatever to the charity workers themselves or their beneficiaries. Smearing of a bona fide charity’s reputation can seriously wrong its trustees and staff, and destroy their ability to help the people for whom it was set up.

Sounds rather moonbattish to me.

What a can of worms that would be.

basically investigation are more a political game.. in which one party blame other.... what we are talking here is about humanity, which is universal...

the problem is not allowing them in our countries, but the problem is that we think that after allowing them in our countries we are done with all of our responsibility. A better approach will be to attack that mentality, that enforce other human under subhuman treatment (which also include genitally mutilated womens)...

we need to ask those genitally mutilated applicants to stand against genitally mutilation .. rather then enjoying their life... its a far bigger duty on them, then on us .... to fight the evil from which they ran.

we had given them support and shelter to fight the evil, not to live on our mercy !

in short, people need to be made self-aware ..... rather then make them accept submission !

re: #303 MandyManners

I think they're Gramscian Whores of the Caliphate.

The UN has been the coalition of petty dictators since it was founded. It is structured to give them clout. Initially it worked ok for us since in 1945 the only place with piles of dictators was Latin America, and those guys had been (with the exception of Argentina) our allies in the war. Then decolonialization came and tin-pot dictators favorable to the Soviets sprang up everywhere. Khrushchev strategy was to use "wars of national liberation" to embarrass the west and to create a world-wide web of alliances while breaking the ring around the Communist bloc that Truman and Eisenhower were trying to construct.

It worked; the modern day Caliphate is the product of thirty years of Soviet planning. Meanwhile, the arab nationalists have been planning their grand new caliphate since the 1920s. Hannah Arendt explained the plan in an essay written in 1943: use oil to drive a wedge between Europe and the US; take advantage of Britain's wartime and post-war weakness to break up (with the full support of the Nazis) the British Empire; to establish their own "Commonwealth" to replace the British Commonwealth.

The only problem with their initial plan was that the Nazis weren't as successful as they hoped (despite Anwar Sadat's attempts to organize a military coup to aid Rommel in the conquest of Egypt) and that cooperation between Arab and non-Muslim Arab states proved to be lacking.

315 Lucius Septimius  Tue, Sep 23, 2008 4:59:48am

From an article in today's WSJ:

Throughout the hard-fought Democratic primaries, Mr. Obama maintained his cool even in the face of some tough Bill and Hill tag-teaming. The way he shrugged off attacks was a huge part of his appeal.

But now Mr. Obama seems to be exchanging his JFK face for a Bob Dole mask. His campaign sends out email after email complaining of McCain "lies." He makes an ill-advised joke about lipstick on a pig that his audience clearly applauds as a snarky put-down of Mrs. Palin, and he does not have the grace (or good sense) simply to apologize and move on. Just last week, he told supporters to "argue and get in their face" when they talk to those who do not share their political affiliation.

This is not the Barack Obama who inspired millions. This is not the Barack Obama who is likely to persuade all those white working-class Hillary voters that he respects their values and will look out for their interests. In short, Mr. Obama needs to relearn the lesson that propelled him to a historic nomination: cheerful and optimistic generally trumps cranky.

Unfortunately for the dems, "cranky" is probably the real Obama insofar as it is a corollary to his narcissism. If people don't respond to his aura the way he thinks they ought to, he seems incapable of any response but to get testy.

The more we see the man behind the curtain, the less attractive he becomes.

I was just speculating on how much quantity of 'normal' shipping traffic there is in the international waters just off the coast of Israel. IF a freighter with a questionable radioactive cargo (from Iran, in this case) went chugging up the coast of Israel, I'm curious as to just how close they could get before raising suspicion. Sounds like the plot of a book that I once read.

I forget: Are international waters 12 miles offshore?

I can't remember who said it, but some media dude said he would pay big money to be a fly on the wall of the voting booth when the Clintons cast their ballot, because he suspects they will be secret McCain voters.

Doing pretty well...gaining strength, though I think I overdid yesterday. Otherwise, life is good...heading up to 83 degrees today with bright sunny skies...yuk.

the house blend or dark roast at Starbucks is usually more authentic than their lattes or whatever else

I like the house blend at Seattles best..
But coffee is like wine..we can all disagree and all still be right.

Grumble grumble, nope, it's over at the brothers house collecting dust. Cant afford to drive it until after I pay my oral surgeon, got an appointment on the 30th....

ploome - can you buy this stuff online? Sounds really good!

I still maintain most local roasters/coffeehouses are far better than SB. My best friend owns a large amount of SB stock, and it's a friendly argument-starter when I mention drinking anything but.
