Tech Note: Iconophobia

Science | Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 5:23:37 pm PDT

We have some new icons in that little information area that shows up at the bottom right of each post; they replace the text links that used to be in that section. The number of comments for each post is now shown with larger digits, followed by the icons:

When I was a wee lad we had to chisel words out of stone tablets then carry them uphill 10 miles through driving snow to school and if we made one little mistake carry them uphill all the way home, chisel everything off and start again, then before bed had to do all our chores!

In Firefox I can make the fonts larger or smaller by ctrl and moving the wheel on the mouse up or down. The argument I have with icons is that I can never remember what they mean. It is nice to scroll over them and see the words to tell me what they are. Larger print is better for all of us over 40.

Killian's correct, I'm just saying congress is congress.

Absolutely those congress critters should get the comeuppance.

But the (D)s control congress, and the control the process.

You notice how they aren't afraid to drag oil company execs in for a measly 8% profit margin, but the biggest financial meltdown not ONE DAMN PEEP about hearings or investigations.

They know who'd get hung in congressional hearings, they can't control it, there will be no hearings.

A toothless bail / buy out will go through, the treasury will eventually get it's money back. The same nincompoops who brought us social security, medicare, medicaid and all the other holes to through money in will find more holes to through that money in.

It needs to be fixed the right way, 3 Wood had it right earlier with his 6 points.

re: #43 godfrey

So what's all this from Killian B that "it's not a bailout" and we're going to "profit" from all this?

It's hardly a "bailout" if we get the 700 billion back with interest.

How Main Street Will Profit

Critics call this a bailout of Wall Street; in fact, it is anything but. I estimate the average price of distressed mortgages that pass from "troubled financial institutions" to the Treasury at auction will be 65 cents on the dollar, representing a loss of one-third of the original purchase price to the seller, and a prospective yield of 10 to 15 percent to the Treasury. Financed at 3 to 4 percent via the sale of Treasury bonds, the Treasury will therefore be in a position to earn a positive carry or yield spread of at least 7 to 8 percent.

/if Congress just spends what we get back, instead of reducing our debt with the proceeds, then it's just more deficit spending

On closer examination, the comment icon looks like a rendering of Mohammed and the @ symbol resembles "Allah" in Arabic, much like the blasphemous ice creams sold by Burger King in London.

Let the seething commence!

O'Reilly totally whitewashed the report, practically absolved Winner. Not one word to advise people about the practice of astroturfing.

He's your typical numnutz, can't be bothered to really research only a "mall" segment on his program. Now we get the trivia quiz.

Wheel of Fortune...

Pathetic.

108 Kailen  Wed, Sep 24, 2008 5:57:28pm

I like the new icons. However, Firefox is giving me some trouble with this web site anymore. Previously, I had been unable to open the "Show Top Rated Links" on the main page, it would just sit there and load forever without actually doing anything. With the newest Firefox, 3.02, I can no longer log on to the main page (but logging in through the comments section still works). The same thing happens, it just sits there loading forever without doing anything.

Anyone else seeing this?

/if Congress just spends what we get back, instead of reducing our debt with the proceeds, then it's just more deficit spending

heard the former finance minister of Japan comment on things yesterday on some program. he said the most importing thing that we could do and japan didn't is shore up the housing market early. Get people buying again and builders building again. Otherwise you get a spiral of uncertainty that just raises the cost of funds for the rest of the economy.

I don't read the leaked comments before a speech, but I assume the President is going to try to make us feel better about ponying up for a mess created by greedy irresponsible businesses and greedy irresponsible people. I am not an economist, all I know is that I'm mad as hell bout living right all my life and the only reward I get is to bail out others. There's got to be a better way.

Mind open, but the President will have to work hard to convince me.

The job had power on Monday after the storm. I have been at work every day since, as it is safer than home. ;)

We got power at the house after five days, so not too bad, considering that I know lots of people still without. The entrance to the nearby elementary school is in a neighborhood still replete with generators.

I've had the "top rated links" problem before (and reported it). Doesn't happen to me every time, but when it does it throws some javascript errors (oh look, there goes one now: "Error: uncaught exception: Permission denied to call method XMLHttpRequest.open") and appears to lock up in a loop.

Not running Firefox. I use k-Meleon (which runs the Gecko engine... don't know if they rolled their own javascript).

Looking to favorite a really old entry (at least 2+ years ago). It's a Palestinian woman being shown crying against the backdrop of a wall (I think). And then there is a second photograph, zoomed out, of the 400 photographers taking her picture, revealing it for what it really is: a staged photo op. Anyone help me with a link?

I think the photos you are talking about were taken during the period of time described here: 2006 Lebanon War Photo Controversies.

Article may help you narrow down the dates; you may also follow some of the article's links and find the exact photo you are looking for.

The book Debt Virus by Jacques S. Jaikaran also explains the creation of money from debt. I sent a copy to my senator some years ago, but he claimed he did not have time to read it, and returned it.
