The six millionth comment is worth something...how much of the 700 billion will it buy down?

That is apparently the "real" magic number.
I'm backing up a thread, now.

Fought red-lining
Obama represented Calvin Roberson in a 1994 lawsuit against Citibank, charging the bank systematically denied mortgages to African-American applicants and others from minority neighborhoods.

"I don't recall him ever standing up and giving an impassioned speech -- it was a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff," said Fay Clayton, the lead lawyer on the case.

"He was the very junior lawyer in that case," said attorney Robert Kriss. "He had just graduated from law school. I don't recall him being in court at any time I was there. I was the lead lawyer for Citibank and he was not very visible to me."

Kriss, Clayton and every other co-counsel and opposing counsel interviewed for this story praised Obama's legal ability, temperament and everything about his courtroom demeanor, even though, they agree, he didn't say much in the courtroom. Many are now donors to his campaign.

On Feb. 23, 1995, Obama billed 2 hours and 50 minutes for an appearance before Judge Ruben Castillo on behalf of his client, and also for reviewing some documents in advance of a deposition. That cost Citibank -- which ultimately had to pay the winning side's fees -- $467 at Obama's hourly rate of $165.

Miner commanded the higher rate of $285 an hour. During his appearance before the judge, Obama said he would need more time to file a response to a motion, and the judge agreed. That was all Obama said during the half-hour hearing.

His final bill on the case was 138 hours, or $23,000.

You went to Sweet Briar? I so wanted to go, I was accepted, I was packing up my horse and every pink and green thing I owned (which was a lot back then) and wanted to go - but then....

I was accepted to Stanford - with a large scholarship offer. So Daddy said "Stanford it is, my friend". That summer I met ArmyHusband - and fell in love - and got married - and barely escaped being killed by my father -

Flash foward and I ended up going to Texas A&M for my undergrad. There are many hidden jokes in here.

re: #96 jorline

Ahhhhhhh looks like it's all there zombie.

Surprising since it looks like a new account.

True story:

In 1934, a relative of mine didn't want to turn in his $20 gold pieces when Roosevelt took us off the gold standard and recalled all gold coins (and replaced them with paper money). Like a lot of people, he didn't trust the government. So he put them all in a big glass jar and buried it.

On his deathbed 35 years later, her told his now-grown daughter where the jar was. After he died, she tried to dig it up, but couldn't find it. Finally, sometime in the late '70s I think, she along with another family member found the jar. It was packed with mint condition $20 St. Gaudens gold pieces.

They were worth so much, numismatically, that she sold them all and used the money to buy several tracts of land -- which were later developed.

She recently died a very wealthy woman.

So let that be a lesson: Don't mock the "bury it in the backyard" method of investment!

Start a mass movement. Everybody tomorrow do an Obama. Announce that you are not going to work and instead go parading around telling everyone that you are smarter than they are. When your boss calls you can drag yourself in but only if you kick over the table in his conference room. This accomplishes two, count them folks two, things.
1. It makes a bold artistic statement.
2. It gives me a shot at your job when you get canned.

Great story, zombie. That generation knew who couldn't be trusted.

My grandfather was like that. We have journals he kept during the depression in southern Calif. He held down three jobs and bartered for food. He would list in his journal, which we still have, about trading eggs and chickens for mending fences.

His entire adult life was spent at swap meets throughout Calif...I could never figure out why he needed 15 complete sets of wooden shaft golf irons. Before he died he was taking classes on repairing TV's at the local college. If you bought the parts he would repair your TV for free.

On Fridays and Saturdays he would walk to seven different banks he had deposits in. He would drink their coffee and eat their donuts and take their free pens. When he finally died we found about $1000 scattered in those seven banks...buried in the house, under the floorboards they found over 150K...LOL

I loved my grandfather..what a neat and unique man.

Ya' know, Great van Susteren is a nice-looking woman. She's no Miss America contestant (and who among us is?) but, she has a nice set of cheek-bones, and a really fantastic jaw-line. And, she has a nice, piercing gaze.

The same could be said of Nancy Pelosi. Not being able to blink accounts for the piercing gaze.

Compare that with crap like fairly odd parents or ed edd and eddy, where bathroom humor and snot rules.
no comparison

Take a closer look at Fairly Odd Parents. Each one is a morality play about the unintended consequences of your actions. With the added bonus of bathroom humor and snot.

Grandpa sounds GREAT! Carry on his good name. If he was still alive I'd ask permission for him to adopt me!

A very loving man as well. I could never figure out why my father was cold hearted most of his life.

When he was dying in the hospital, he would not eat his dinner and would hide in his nightstand. When my grandmother would leave the hospital he would hand her the food and tell her to take it home for Tina...his pet chihuahua. He knew he was dying and wanted to make sure Tina had a good meal.

I'm like my grandfather...I still get a kiss and a hug from my 14 yo son each night and I hope he never stops.

349 Steffan  Thu, Sep 25, 2008 7:22:33pm

Zombie, have you heard this one?

This is a story that could only happen in Berkeley---militant tree sitters accused of racism. And the funniest part is that the Berkeley Daily Planet reported this story with a completely straight face as if tree sitters are some sort of a legitimate group like Teamsters or Ruthenian-Americans (Tom Selleck is one). It seems that the tree sitters (union or non-union?) have been living up in the Berkeley trees for almost two years protesting the construction of a high-tech gym at the UC Berkeley campus. You can see a video of the "wonderful" life of these tree sitters in the upper right. Meanwhile the Daily Planet reports on the racism charge leveled against the tree sitters:

“[R]acism against our minority student athletes ... underlies much of the opposition to our student athlete high performance center,” declared UC Berkeley Chancel-lor Robert Birgeneau in a letter sent to two major donors to the school.

That allegation in a June 27 letter stunned the recipients, Berke-ley residents and long-time university donors and supporters Thomas and Janice Boyce.

The appearance of the letter, given to this newspaper by a third party, comes as the campus is launching the public phase of a $3 billion endowment fund-raiser, with Birgeneau in the lead.

The chancellor’s letter followed earlier letters from the couple questioning the university’s handling of the tree-sit protest at the now-leveled grove at Memorial Stadium, as well as the expense of rehiring campus police chief Victoria Harrison.

Go read the whole thing. It's a keeper.

Not sure my comment was about Greta; more of a comment I think on what the market (read Fox execs) pushed her to do. I don't blame her for doing it; I probably would, too - paid for the surgery several times over. The only real point is that her appearance is - like the ones you point out - a product.

ah, sorry to hear you are so down.
It's unfortunate, isn't it, that all we can do is sit here and "take it", whatever "it" happens to be. I think people are feeling powerless, and that feeling alone is causing some panic. We like to believe we are in control of our lives, and we trust the gov't and business to conduct things as they should be conducted, to avoid things like this in the first place.

Yeah, but then it got complicated. I took a job that I really can't do. All my testing and profiling said to stay away from a job like this, plus it pushes my physical limitations.

Of course it wound up being moot, The weekend after I finished training, I fell down at home, broke my ankle, got a ligature separation, and sprained my back and wrist.

Had two interviews while I'm down and out, but haven't heard back. If I don't hear anything I'm probably going to try and go back to work next Wed.

Awww... I was all excited about winning, but we're several tens of thousands of comments away. Maybe that lottery ticket'll pay off better.

Will there be a rule against a "Six million and onest!" post?

re: #421 HD Woman

This is toooo weird, on my home pc, I can open every website except LGF.

I get an error message: internet explorer cannnot open the internet site. operation aborted

any thoughts as to what it could be?

Same error on my IE.

I glad, well not glad per se, that someone else has this problem.

It just started today so I'm using Firefox to access.

Any ideas what's causing this?
