The Debate Is On

Science | Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 8:56:19 am PDT

Word is that John McCain will be participating in the presidential debate tonight after all.

Meanwhile, lots of people emailed to complain that Internet Explorer 6 was balking at loading LGF. It appears to be an interaction with the new ShareThis feature. I’ve made a code change that may fix it; if you’ve had the problem and it’s now fixed, please post a comment and let us know.

UPDATE at 9/26/08 9:47:46 am:

Good news — the same code trick that lets ShareThis work properly with IE6 also works with our popup calendar.

So you die-hard Internet Explorer users now get the ‘Daily Archives’ feature that other browsers have. It’s the button in the left column, right below the ‘Blogs’ menu, labeled ‘Daily Archives’ (oddly enough).

UPDATE at 9/26/08 9:53:10 am:

The trick: I simply moved the <script> tag that loads the ShareThis Javascript file out of the <head> section of the page and into the <body>, if the browser is Internet Explorer. This gets around a bug in IE that causes it to crash if certain operations are attempted before the page is completely loaded. From a code purist standpoint, it’s not very elegant; but it works, which is more important.

Fresh thread. Get your coffee and donuts and strap in tight, lizards, it's going to be a bumpy day until the debate is over.

This idea sounds just crazy enough to possibly work, so naturally it won't be given serious consideration. How great is our bureaucracy!

Hi Pals,

I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.

Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.

To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free.

So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.

Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.

That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket.

A husband and wife has $595,000.00.
What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?

Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved.

Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads

Put away money for college - it'll be there

Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs.

Buy a new car - create jobs

Invest in the market - capital drives growth

Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves

Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else

Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed
by one of our candidates for President.

If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!

As for AIG - liquidate it.

Sell off its parts.

Let American General go back to being American General.

Sell off the real estate.

Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't.

Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."

But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

How do you spell Economic Boom?

I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion

We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC

And remember, The Birk plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

Kindest personal regards,

Birk

T. J . Birkenmeier, A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Re public

PS: Feel free to pass this along to your pals as it's either good for a laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on how to best use $85 Billion!

As i said below - I hope McCain will answer each question with just one sentence - and use the rest of the allocated time to expound on this crisis and show how it was the Dems in Congress who have been the guilty aprty since Clinton.
I hope he tells on TV how B0 has benefitted from all this - and how the Dems have wrecked every opportunity to control this since 2003.

Not holding my breath ...

Sad to say, no likelihood of a McCain knockout tonight. Under the best of circumstances, we can hope for a split decision, on points. Most voters won't see the debate. They'll see gotcha clips on the news and read reviews in tomorrow's papers, most of which - let's face it - are already 90% written, needing only a few adjectives and a stray fact or two. Guess who is going to be made to look bad. It's like the polls coming out now: McCain starts out 10% down before the first sample is taken. The truth means little, today. It's all in the presentation.

I dunno. Viewership is predicted to be around 50 million, which sounds entirely plausible. The audience for the major convention speeches was in the neighborhood of 40 million. Given what's been going on, interest should be high. 122 million people voted in the 2004 presidential election, so 50 million is a pretty substantial share of the electorate.

Meanwhile- Obama and his hired hacks are frantically stealing talking points. Talking points that are ideologically incompatible with Obama becasue Obama is a communist.

Mornin', everyone.

Obama: I autographed a lot of magazine covers with my picture on them.

McCain: I was in Washington with almost every other Senator, except for Senator Obama, trying to prevent an economic crisis from getting worse.

I'm clueless on this Lehrer interview. Based on the comments in this thread evidently he helped 0 out of a gaffe. Any links?

Banks book the settled mortgage cash and work out the commercial real estate market paper (much better value retention here). Residential supply/demand imbalance fixed.

200 million into 85 billion equals 425 vs 425 thousand.

Just sayin.

Thank You Charles for fixing the IE6 as I could not get on to Little Green Footballs last night or early this morning but now all seems well.

Harry Reid has been spending a lot of time attacking John McCain for causing all the problems with the economic "fix". Since the Dems control congress they don't need to ask anyone to help them as they can just vote it through if they want to. They must be nervous about forcing this on the country and need someone else to blame as usual -- especially since most of the country doesn't want to bail out Wall Street for a problem created by the Dems in the first place.

Harry Reid is such a small mean little person. How is it that America is stuck with a no talent hack like this in the Senate anyway?

I like it.

It would be interesting to know if the Republicans want an investigation put into the bailout bill. The Dems and the President are in too much of a hurry to get this done.

re: #7 obageegee

I hear about this yesterday, it's a shame the math is way off and this plan only provides $425 per person. Wishful thinking I guess.

re: #92 df91103

The only problem I see with this is where the zeros were put.
Do the math.
You get $425.00 not $425,000.00
Maybe you can get a new set of tires that are properly inflated.

-df

So, the ''cost'' of this bailout is (only) $425 per adult in the USA?
I had heard it was ~ $10,000 per taxpayer.
Do THAT many adults in the USA NOT pay any taxes?
Yikes!

Unless I'm much mistaken, you've misplaced your decimal point by 3 digits.

$85 billion divided by 200 million
is
$85,000,000,000 divided by 200,000,000
which is the same as
$85,000 divided by 200
which gives us each $425.

Too bad...

Banks book the settled mortgage cash and work out the commercial real estate market paper (much better value retention here). Residential supply/demand imbalance fixed.

And back to business we go.

.

In Mass, there are plenty of vacant or under-occupied commercial buildings, while the demand for housing and the low supply has driven up the prices, so it wouldn't work here.

Suddenly (no stinky you won't have to delete this one) there is a ruckus and the cameras pan to Obama's left. Obama has a stunned but resolved look on his face as several serious looking men in black suits and narrow ties come onto the stage. "Senator Obama" one of the men says matter of factly, "I am Special agent Jones, with the FBI. We have a warrant for your arrest.".......

So, the debate is on and we've got folks who think that McCain is going to stick it to Obama and that this will uncover Obama's weaknesses and expose him as nothing but an empty suit.

How exactly did that work out during the Democrats debates? He somehow managed to survive 'em, even though you had Biden saying he had no experience, he was attacked on his paucity of record, and lack of achievements to his name.

He managed to glide on through.

Now, he's going up against McCain, who's not exactly the greatest orator on the planet, and the deck is stacked against him because of the economic mess (CW always seems to favor Democrats in economic mess).

What does McCain have to do?

He's got to hit Obama on Georgia - showing how he came out authoritatively and decisively on day 1, and that Obama finally came around to the McCain position 72 hours later.

He could and should hit on Iraq - that Obama's prescription for Iraq was a prescription for mayhem and destruction, and that the situation in Iraq improved only because of the bold position to engage in a troop surge that stabilized the situation and enabled the political advances we're now seeing there. Going wobbly only gives the terrorists a chance to make a recovery.

We have to continue attacking terrorists where they hide, and that means maintaining a vigorous military, increasing the size of key units, and anticipating future threats, including missile defense, which Democrats repeatedly have sought to kill. That's unacceptable when you have North Korea and Iran threatening with missiles and nuclear technologies.

We don't want a Cold War, but someone must stand up for our friends and allies around the world when confronted with Russian aggression.

Etc...

Will he do that? Can he do that? We'll see tonight.

If Obama is elected (God forbid), he could pardon Blago. And Rezko, and everyone else he knows who is or should be in prison. A limited time offer from the feds could make him talk -- basically, he'd have to decide to take a good deal before, say, the last week in October, or gamble that Obama wins and gives him a get out of jail free card.

Back when I joined the Marines in '93, several base commanders allowed anyone over 18 to purchase beer, just no hard alcohol. Think they've repealed that rule. Overseas in Japan had the same rule for a while

A brief aside: Regardless of campaign strategy and tactics involved in the Bailout, the next POTUS is going to have his administration saddled with, and probably defined by, the impact of the deal currently being worked out. One would think whoever the POTUS will be would want to be in the room when that decision is made. It is a bit more important to governance than a debate.

We need consider the sophistication of the viewers watching the zillion+ dem debates - Political junkies like you, and donks. Only the junkies could see Barry for what he is. Tonight America watching. This will be the biggest viewer turnout in history. McCain et al = genius'

States used to set their own drinking ages until the early 1980s. It was during this time that the Feds used what amounts to extortion to convince them to raise it to 21. They also used the same methods to enforce the 55mph speed limit for so long.

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00.

it's wonderful till you verify the calculations.

the correct answer to this equation is 425.

Not 425,000.

I figured that out too. Not quite the same without the extra three zeros. But here is another calculation: How much for each of those 200K American adults would it cost for the proposed $700 billion government bailout? The answer is $3500. Heck, as opposed to a new Great Depression, I'll take that deal any day. Especially on a long-term payment plan with low interest, which only the government can assure. I understand that some people pay $3500 or even more to buy fancy surround sound flatscreen TVs made in China, so it can't really be that big a deal, huh? It is NOT the economics of this thing, it is the toxic politics in Washington, and particularly the Democrats desire to keep and extend their insane tentacles of power. -- Ruthless

Latest on the credit markets:

Central banks attempt money-market rescue

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. Federal Reserve and other major central banks agreed to pour billions of dollars of additional liquidity into the financial system Friday, scrambling to shore up short-term debt markets frozen by the reluctance of nervous commercial banks to make loans to each other.
Despite further liquidity injections, key short-term borrowing rates remained elevated. That's a sign the money markets that banks use to ensure they have adequate capital to meet near-term operating needs have virtually seized up, analysts said.
"The financial industry is now on life support, kept alive by massive emergency injections of liquidity from the Federal Reserve," said Bernard Baumohl, chief economist at The Economic Outlook Group in Princeton, N.J.

Tick, tock Congress.

Many voice anger over $700b outlay

A series of hastily arranged demonstrations were held yesterday to protest the plan, including one on Boston Common and one outside the White House. Some US lawmakers said they were flooded with calls and e-mails from constituents expressing concern. And public opinion polls showed widespread opposition.

A Suffolk University/Boston Globe poll of 400 Massachusetts residents this week found nearly twice as many people opposed the White House proposal as supported it. About 49 percent disagreed with the plan, while 29 percent agreed with it.

Thanks. It's good to have you and other Chicago lizards to straighten me out.

If THE MANCHILD speaks Southern Black I am going to lose it! WE HATE fake Southerners!

Foreign policy is connected to our economy. Several foreign leaders this week met with Bush concerned about the current situation. I think this is one time when Americans will not tune out if the subject does a U-turn to economics. I agree it can be tedious, but not with all these poker chips on the table.

Does anyone know anything about Senator Gregg and how he might handle this? He has been appointed by McConnell to represent the Senate. Why not Shelby? And Corker from TN needs to put a Cork in it. He was slamming McCain for coming back! Did he forget which party he belongs to?

Rush is not confident that Dodd and Frank are going to pay. I guess in reality I never thought they would either, but I sure was hoping.

And why is Fox reporting WaMu has failed constantly without adding JP Morgan Chase bought them up? My Lord, we cannot find a port in the storm anywhere!

re: #189 unrealizedviewpoint

Since there's talk of browsers, let me ask - is the continual crashing of Firefox-3 a common occurrence? This browser must crash 3-4 times daily. I sure was happier with the older version.

Yes, that is a common complaint over at the FF user forums and bugzilla. There are a few causes, like a flash video on one of the tabs that can cause this.

Downloading the Adobe Flash version 10 beta seems to fix that one, but there are a few other reasons as well.

re: #372 loppyd
From your link:

Fewer than four in 10 Republicans, three in 10 Democrats and one in 10 independents said they support the package.

Fifty-seven percent said they think the bailout is needed to prevent a serious recession. Even so, only 35 percent said they think the plan would resolve the financial crisis, with doubters in the majority in both parties and among independents.

The poll found a standoff over which presidential candidate would do better handling the financial crisis, with about a third opting for Republican John McCain and about the same number preferring Democrat Barack Obama.
