Obama the Messiah seems to have lost a bit of glow. To a rather amateurish opponent in debate. And I love the way PBS changed the rules. International Issues no linger the topic. How much would you like to bet that the Obama camp was informed, but McCain not so much?

19 JCM  Fri, Sep 26, 2008 9:41:46pm

Evening gang.

Been one of those days, but it's over. Sort out the damages next week. Got home and family first ya' know so the debate got shelved, listened to a bit while doing dishes. Obama is a naif, and needs to get mugged to understand the real world, talking to thugs is what the thug wants, while he talks, the centrifuges spin.

God Love Bill Whittle and his kidney stones. Wonderful stuff as usual from Bill.

Any way dishes are done, kids in bed, wife is crashed (she works tomorrow) and I'm winding down with an Arrogant Bastard Ale (curses on the Lizard who suggested it, it's damn good).

Emmanuel is hot even just pounding on a guitar, I'm gonna' have to buy an album or two.

Somewhere between "I'm Rich" and "I'm good looking" except for the very sad fact that the bottle is empty and I am flat busted broke and can't buy any more before next payday.

Seriously, I am at the stage where if it weren't for spell checker, I would be writing as incoherently as I would be speaking.

1984 Miss America Swimsuit competition, one piece.

Much better cut on those one pieces.

Also, looking at the second video versus the first reminds me of the problem of how some lenses will add weight unfairly where others won't. Something about the physics of light and round lenses.

The angle on the first video was not the best either. The second was a much better quality video and I think a much better quality photography.

The most important lesson for a photographer to learn is how to throw away bad shots. A good photographer learns that some images should never ever be shown to the sitter or the client. Only a very few good shots are worth keeping.

Home video, such as was the first, break that rule, and probably should not be judged as critically as I had done.

McCain started weak, stumbled once or twice, but grew in strength and confidence. the next couple of times they meet McCain will be using Obama as a dish rag.

What was the Lizard consensus on the debate?

I heard on little bit and Obambi sounded like he never heard of hunters.

I don't know about the consensus but the fact that MSM have to escoriate McCain's behaviour by calling him "troll", "angry", "disrespectful", tells you everything you need to know.

McCain showed a rookie politician how its done for 30 minutes. It was embarrassing.

Tipsy Lizards?

I didn't watch much of the debate. I'd come to the point that just a bit more politics would've caused me to OD. Instead, I picked up The Kid early, went shopping, to the park and then to dinner. I'm on the last Deighton novel with Samson as the protagonist, and I'm getting close to curling up with it.

Bleem used to work at Knut. I booked a couple gigs for his band when I was in the biz, years ago. Last I heard from him he was at Willie's. But that was years ago.

Of course, that store has been closed for at least a dozen years.

All I remember about Knut is, hey, there's a vintage Les Paul for $400 and it's still good, not dropping in value.

I thought he did that already tonight. Obama constantly had the look the he was trying to match democrat points with subjects in his head. And when he couldn't come up with anything, he said, "we don't need 8 more years of Bush." McCain looked calm, and talked conversationally. A lot of Palin's "hotness" is just that, not the physical, but the confidence, my first real love was not physically extreme attractive, but very confident and self assured. My wife built her career before we met and is also a confident self starter.

My favorite woman in the entire world, my lady in NYC, is the #1 achiever in her company (internationally famous makeup co. on 5th Ave), unbelievably tough, completely self-made, works her lovely butt off to pull down more scratch than my father does after 40 years in engineering (not to knock dad, but just to make a comparison), all without a college education, or gubmint handouts, or feminist groups, or trust funds. Just pure skill and hard work. And that's after she's been through family and childhood sh-t that would have broken almost anybody else, some of which I witnessed first-hand. And she still doesn't get what I see in her.

She's even starting to come around to Republican thinking, I think. Frankly I don't want her to agree with me TOO much, otherwise there is no intellectual excitement... Though I am still perplexed by her voting for Hillary. :P

I didn't read it all but I did see several criticisms of McCain not being strong enough, being crotchity, etc. I thought he was being too "nice" on the economy, not wanting to point fingers at dems, but he has a strategy for that. McCain basically came across as an experienced statesman who mocked Obama at times and Obama as an eloquent speaker without much experience.

"We cannot be interested in who would get credit for finding a solution and who would be blamed if an agreement cannot be reached. We must put our country first to solve this economic crisis. Because in the end, that's what leaders do in times of crisis."

I agree, but only in reference to the back story stuff. One reason why I enjoyed the movies so much was that I could see when Peter Jackson inserted Simillarion stuff into the story that wasn't in the novels. I actually think he improved on the story too. Tolkien was way too much in love of the english language IMHO.

Me Too! Suppossedly there was some "to-do" with the writers about cutting that part of the story. I thought they got the TreeBeard down pat tho.

The audio of the Silmarillion was excellent. I found myself having to rewind because I was enjoying listening to the "performer" so much I wasn't paying attention to the story. It is very involved. I ended-up taking notes --and adding to the Family Tree's included with the book.

Amazing how much Tolkein put into it. The whole backstory to Shelob was so detailed.

Gall points:

Obama, the #2 recipient of Fannie/Freddie donations in the Congress, and bosom buddies with Jim Johnson, has the nerve to claim that was warning about the coming credit crisis (when McCain actually sponsored legislation to deal with this BEFORE Obama was even elected!):

Two years ago, I warned that, because of the subprime lending mess, because of the lax regulation, that we were potentially going to have a problem and tried to stop some of the abuses in mortgages that were taking place at the time.

Last year, I wrote to the secretary of the Treasury to make sure that he understood the magnitude of this problem and to call on him to bring all the stakeholders together to try to deal with it.

Obama thinks he knows more about the mortgage mess than the Secretary of the Treasury, and needs to "educate him"?@#$hole.

When I heard him say it during the debate, my alarms went off.
I've just never heard of this, and it doesn't sound right to me.
As above, the gov't *did* effectively run a mortgage service, but that's not at all the same thing as actually purchasing homes and selling them later at a profit, as Obama claimed.

Here it is again, in full context:

LEHRER: Before we go to another lead question. Let me figure out a way to ask the same question in a slightly different way here. Are you -- are you willing to acknowledge both of you that this financial crisis is going to affect the way you rule the country as president of the United States beyond the kinds of things that you have already -- I mean, is it a major move? Is it going to have a major affect?

OBAMA: There's no doubt it will affect our budgets. There is no doubt about it. Not only -- Even if we get all $700 billion back, let's assume the markets recover, we' holding assets long enough that eventually taxpayers get it back and that happened during the Great Depression when Roosevelt purchased a whole bunch of homes, over time, home values went back up and in fact government made a profit. If we're lucky and do it right, that could potentially happen but in the short term there's an outlay and we may not see that money for a while.

Now six years ago, I stood up and opposed this war at a time when it was politically risky to do so because I said that not only did we not know how much it was going to cost, what our exit strategy might be, how it would affect our relationships around the world, and whether our intelligence was sound, but also because we hadn't finished the job in Afghanistan.

Reality check.

In 2002 Obama was an Illinois State Senator who had just announced a run for US Senate. There was little political risk to Obama opposing the war at the time since as a State Senator he had no say in the imminent war vote.

This was his anti-war speech.

Note that his position on Iraq seems to be frozen in 2002. He made the same points tonight that he did six years ago. Which is OK, I guess, but he STILL hasn't talked about winning the war, only ending it.

Doing a cursory scan of New Deal I, and New Deal II, I see nothing involving purchasing of housing. I may have to dig a little deeper.

In reality, there is probably little real "gotcha" value if this is true, but it would be another in a series of historical gaffes by the Obama campaign.

And it speaks badly to Obama's grasp of the current bailout situation if he has a wrong perception of what Roosevelt did during the Great Depression.

Kos and DU are posting links to and packing every on-line poll they can find.

Interesting. So they're pulling a luaP noR here. They'll therefore get highly-skewed results that will then give them, and the Dems in general, a false sense that they're winning big-time... which will then lead to a certain complacency.

Which means they'll be doubly shocked when the election results go really, really hard over the other way come November.

Truth is, loading the results of these non-scientific polls is really not a very bright thing to do: They should really want to see more naturally-occurring numbers, so that they can gain a better idea of how things are actually going for them, but a lot of these guys are simply lazy-thinkers: After all, they make all their decisions based on feelings, not on logic and fact.

Well, they have the "repeat a lie often enough and it will become truth" bit down. So they try it, time after time, with poll results. They don't really get the cognitive disconnect there, though. Because they're stupid.

The problem is then, not realizing or willing to admit that they've been deluding themselves all along, they all scream "election fraud" when the only poll that actually matters doesn't match their consistently bogus tracking polls.

This time, should Obama lose, they're going to whine "Bradley effect".

It's not that bad a city. Really strange kinda when you look at it from all angles. You have skyscrapers next to three story buildings in the downtown core. Lots of green space no matter where you go. Old and new is side by each. And lots of history here too. One day I am going to have to do the walk from Montgomery's Tavern to the battle of the Upper Canada Rebellion. Just for kicks. I have been to Old Fort York when I was younger. Been up the CN Tower, 9 years after watching it go up. The stories I have of this city, and I have only lived here for about half my life.

As a follow-up to my observation the other night about a couple of McCain/Palin lawn signs springing up seemingly overnight, a few more houses set up some equally prominent Obama/Whatshisname lawn signs- seemingly in direct response to the appearence of the McCain/Palin ones.

Honestly, not really.
No real big gaffes by either candidate.
Neither of them really hit anything out of the park.
A few pokes by each towards the other, but nothing that hit a vital organ.
If you are familiar with the two candidates neither one said anything particularly out of character or off the beaten path.
Obama was anti-Bush, anti-corporation, and anti-war.
McCain stressed his significant foreign policy experience.

I was in Colorado, traveling every week on business that entire season. I voted absentee, not that it matters since I live in Texas. The people I was on the road with were all dedicated liberals. So on election day, I listened to them and nodded early in the day, while they squawked gleefully about their coming victory. Then I holed up in my hotel room and watched the proceedings. If you'll remember, the dems were still trying to figure out a way to claim the GOP stole Ohio as election night ended, but when I went to sleep it was obvious which way things were going. That's hilarious. I had heard about the 2 or 3 Big Five accounting firms that had paperwork literally go out the window. Well, the interesting thing is that why the debate was going on, Obama continuously dropped on the Intrade market and McCain kept going up.

After the MSM started putting out their distortions the prices went back to where they were before the debate.

In other words, when it was up to viewers themselves to judge this, McCain was winning. When the pundits started working their mouths, the tide turned.

Kissinger makes it clear, Obama is a Liar

Henry Kissinger believes Barack Obama misstated his views on diplomacy with US adversaries and is not happy about being mischaracterized. He says: "Senator McCain is right. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level. My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain. We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality."

So no money quotes from tonight's debate then?

As a follow-up to my observation the other night about a couple of McCain/Palin lawn signs springing up seemingly overnight, a few more houses set up some equally prominent Obama/Whatshisname lawn signs- seemingly in direct response to the appearence of the McCain/Palin ones.

Right now it averages out to a 3:2 ratio in favor of McCain. A little too close for comfort, but not bad for a blue state.

i'd put some Pallin signs up, but HRH is convinced the moonbats will suddenly storm the castle if we do. the fact tah they have no cojones doesn't seem to enter into the debate.

re: #360 rednaxela

Well, the interesting thing is that why the debate was going on, Obama continuously dropped on the Intrade market and McCain kept going up.

After the MSM started putting out their distortions the prices went back to where they were before the debate.

In other words, when it was up to viewers themselves to judge this, McCain was winning. When the pundits started working their mouths, the tide turned.

Well, unless you think the composition of real time intranet traders matches those of undecided voters, even if you are right, it doesn't mean much.

Perhaps intranet options traders are market-savvy, and therefore intrinsically favor McCain as the obvious free market candidate. (I don't know, but it seems plausible).

Also, I'd suggest that options traders aren't always "right". The options market didn't predict the demise of WM yesterday. I know as I sold WM calls just the day before. . .as oblivious as everyone else. Not only are these worthless today, but so is the entire damn company.

A year ago, Hilary Clinton was WAY up ahead on the options market, and I actually though about shorting her. (Wish I had, retrospectively).

re: #405 looking closely

I agree with all that, but it there was definitely a correlation between what was going on in the debate and what happened on Intrade.

I.e. when Barry said "I've got a bracelet too" he went from -0.2 to -1%.
or when McCain called him on the tactics/strategy distinction, Barry went from -2 to -3%.

I just think instinctively, people watching this knew McCain was doing better. But of course many folks didn't see it and will only hear and read what the MSM's going to say and that will play out better for Barry.
