The Duck of Death

Science | Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 8:57:56 pm PDT

Well, the economy may be melting down, and Iran may be on the brink of nuclear weapons, but at least we don’t have gigantic geese the size of small airplanes with beaks full of razor sharp teeth.

Scientists have found a new huge and well-preserved fossil of a goose and duck relative that swam around what is now England 50 million years ago flashing sharp, toothy smiles.

The skull, discovered on the Isle of Sheppey off the southeast coast of England in the Thames Estuary, belonged to a huge ancient bird in the extinct genus Dasornis, which had a whopping 16-foot (5-meter) wingspan.

“Imagine a bird like an ocean-going goose almost the size of a small plane!” said Gerald Mayr of the Senckenberg Research Institute in Germany and a member of the team that studied the skull. “By today’s standards, these were pretty bizarre animals, but perhaps the strangest thing about them is that they had sharp, tooth-like projections along the cutting edges of the beak.”

Hey all y'all - gee I thought Charles was never gonna put up a new thread!
Anyway, I wanted to say a special thanks to LGFer Typicalwhitey who dared to face down the lion.
First please listen to this video (ya gotta go through a 15 second commercial) [Link: gatewaypundit.blogspot.com...]

Then y'all should know that Typicalwhitey had the brass to send this to: three other TV Stations, radio stations, the McCain Campaign Headquarters, her Governor and her Senators and Congresscritters.
It's apparently now on Drudge and I have had the distinct privilege of making some suggestions to Typicalwhitey about these District Attorneys and Sheriff's offices who are going to act as Obama Truth Squads. The Governor of Missouri, about 4 hours or so after Typicalwhitey sent the above video link to his office, issued a STRONG statement condemning this activity. I'm hoping that the FBI and/or the FEC to whom Typicalwhitey also wrote, will be investigating and perhaps suspending those D.A.'s and Sheriff's from their jobs.
HURRAY FOR TYPICALWHITEY!

Actually i have a good one to compete with this.

In Australia they have the Emu. But about 30,000 years ago (yes that recent) there were mammoth birds to a height of 3 meters still running around the plains of Australia.

Of course some smart Aborigine (Koorie if you prefer) found they tasted reeel good. So they died out because big drumsticks feed a lot of people.

And yes .. they were carnivorous bird.

You know, I can't help but wonder if at the time these creatures lived, was the density of the atmosphere much higher?

How else could they fly in the air that existed then? Were they made of balsa wood?

II haven't seen anybody do research into this and say, 'hey, the air had to be as thick as soup for them to be able to have sustained flight. Or they had to be made of fiberglass to withstand bad landings.

Because, face it, unless they were able to levitate, they WOULD have a few bad landings. And if that were the case they'd all be dead. No babies.

So maybe I'm missing something here?

re: #47 scrad

All you're missing is that very large airplanes fly in the atmosphere we have now. There's no aerodynamic reason why a Duck of Death couldn't fly in the same air.

In fact, assuming the climate was warmer then, the density altitude would have been higher than today. Which is another way of saying less dense.

Not the job of a public employee.
Notice they did not pledge to perform the same service on behalf of McCain.

Which I pointed out in my letter:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you concerning what I consider voter intimidation against Senator McCain supporters.

Per a KMOV TV news broadcast, found here: [Link: www.kmov.com...]

The broadcast states, per reporter John Mills KMOV TV, that Missouri law enforcement target anyone who runs a misleading campaign ad.

He further states that Missouri Prosecutors and Sheriff’s are joining a “Barack Obama Truth Squad” including Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer.

From what I am seeing here this means that any ad that they disagree with or that they consider “misleading” will be dealt with via law enforcement!

John Mills also states in his report that his information is coming directly from the Obama Campaign.

Is this legal? Should prosecutors and sheriffs be “targeting” those they disagree with politically, especially on “company time”?

Since they stated that this is being carried out against McCain ads at the instigation of the Obama Campaign, and apparently will only be used against McCain ads, does this not violate campaign laws to use law enforcement officials to target citizens whom they disagree with politically?

I would appreciate your attention to this matter as I feel it is a direct violation of free speech, of voting rights, it is not being applied to both candidates ads and it is directly targeted at McCain voters

78 Purple Prose  Sat, Sep 27, 2008 9:27:45pm

The amazing thing about evolution is that through random mutation of DNA some quite unexpected and extreme-seeming organisms can arise, like Obama, but in the end it is the more practical organisms that leave more offspring and win out in terms of the gene pool. One great adaptation may win out one day, but it's the next day and the next day, when you're up against a multitude of competitors, that matters. And big size may make you a hit for one day, but when things change and it's the ability to burrow under the ground and survive a cold winter (or a longer period because of darkness and coldness because an asteroid has hit and filled the upper atmosphere with dust), it's flexibility and robustness and not sheer size that matters.

Evolution is a tinkerer, and just being big is not guarantee of success. In fact, big size is more often a liability, if resources become limited. So we live in a world of small organisms like insects and medium-sized organisms like us. They are the most adaptable to changing environments, and so able to leave the most offspring, through thick or thin.

McCain is not as tall as Obama. This is obviously not at all related to evolutionary fitness, but, what the heck, Obama sucks. He is a dinosaur, even if he is young. McCain is an adaptable creature, who was a fighter pilot, then one who suffered great torture and then rose to a position of great accomplishment. Obama is just a big bird who had Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers blowing to keep him aloft.

Obama is a dinosaur, who will whither as soon as the climate changes. McCain is an adaptable mammal, who can adapt to anything.

Three guys get to heaven,Bob, Larry and Bill, and before they enter St. Peter warns them "whatever you do don`t ever, ever, step on a duck. Once one quacks, they all do, and they make a terrible racket".

Bob enters heaven and immediately steps on a duck. So an angel comes up to him and chains a large hairy ugly woman to him for eternity, and says " I told you not to step on a duck".

The next week Larry steps on a duck. An angel comes to him and chains a very ugly woman to him for eternity and says "I told you not to step on a duck".

Bill hadn`t stepped on a duck since he had gotten into heaven, then one day an angel comes up to him and chains a beautiful supermodel to him.

He asked her why she was there and she turned to him and said, " I don`t know what you did, but I stepped on a duck."

They were serving as campaign supporters.
Not the job of a public employee.

Obama lied in his ad when he said the legislation he co-authored with Lugar would secure loose nuclear weapons. That piece of legislation never once mentioned loose nuclear weapons. And besides if there were really nuclear weapons for sale on the black market, the people holding them would never ever enter negotiations with the USA.

By the standard raised in that video, the officials would have had to ban the debate last night!

I assumed he walked into a duck bar.

I was hunting one day near a local lake when I heard voices coming from beyond a sand hill. I climbed up the dune, and looking arround saw three ducks on the water below. A moment later, I again heard the voices and realized the ducks were talking.
Amazed, I blurted out " you guys can talk?"
One of the ducks looked up, and with a sigh said" yes, we are capable of inteligent conversation."
"So, what are your names? what do you do?" I asked.
The nearest duck said, "my name is Quack, I swim arround on this lake all day. occasionally I dive under the water and blow bubbles."
The second duck then said my name is Quack Quack, I swim arround on this lake all day. occasionally I also dive under the water and blow bubbles."
Turning to the third duck, I asked, " Are you Quack Quack Quack?"
"No," he replied, "I'm Bubbles."

Typicalwhitey,
thank you got charging forward and getting the word out there on this chilling strong arm tactic that obama is trying to use in missouri to intimidate american citizens from exercising their 1st amendment rights.
his egregious behavior seems like something we would have witnessed in russia in november of 1917, w/ stalin shutting down free speech as he took over the country.
obama's tactics reek of blatant and calloused disregard of what our constitution guarantees us all.
it is really shocking to see those public officials in missouri give a press conference and decree that they are effectively shutting down the 1 st amendment (basically to ensure that obama gets elected.)
they should be jailed.

That the TV station that broadcast that had no comment on it, methinks that, competition being what it is, Typicalwhitey's letter is going to stir up a newstory on at least one of 'em. Which will, necessarily lead to other MSM outlets -even if just at the Missouri/Kansas City/St. Louis regional area at first.

Attention all lizardoids what can we learn conclusively from this article (which by the way has NO photographic evidence) tell us?

#1 Scientists found ONE fossil (specifically the skull)
#2 Where the fossil was found.
#3 The Fossil is bird like with teeth and is the size of a small plane.

What we don't know from the article...
#1 Where there more than one of these creatures? (be honest does the article say there was more than one fossil found?)
#2 How old the fossil is? (yes the article say 50 million years but how do we know that without documentation of index fossil or chemical dating results?)
#3 Who found the fossil? (is this person an objectionable inquisitor? or someone who is financially compensated for making such a discovery?)

Please Don't get me wrong I"m not Disputing the claim of the find.

But if this Article was posted on some Moonbat site it I have in some faith that it would be a little more investigated than this?

I Welcome any feedback please..

That was what was happening here, and it was frightening to me to see that video clip with those officials speaking as if they had every right to do what they were doing, without even mentioning that they would provide the same "public service" for McCain.
I was also completely perplexed by the news station reporters seeming to be completely oblivious to what the were reporting - like it was no big deal!

Obama is a thug, as you say, imo. And this is a frightening look at what life with an Obama presidency would mean.

He becomes more and more arrogant and seems to feel more and more entitled every time he speaks.

Wouldn't the entire "crisis" go away if we simply changed the
mark to market rules. Like, say, use a floor for 30 year mortgage securities.

Why should a bundle of 30 year mortgages be worth less than 50% of their basis? Their collateral (the house) is worth at least half.

Don't count on it, they will just raise the percentage rate.

1) In Michigan they track two metrics. Your home's appraised value and its taxable value. And during the boom the appraised value shot up like a rocket while the taxable value was tied to the rate of inflation. So now while home values are dropping, it is entirely possible that your home's appraised value will drop like a rock while its taxable value will continue to rise. Someday in the future the two will meet perhaps. But for me at least there is still a $50,000 difference.

If the assessor had to comply with Marked to Market it would have cost me more during the boom, but I would be saving more now.

As for increasing the Millage rate, that requires a local vote. And millage increases never ever pass these days.

Congressional Leaders Announce Breakthrough in Bailout Bill Negotiations

Congressional leaders and the Bush administration last night struck a historic accord to insert the government deeply into the nation's financial markets, agreeing to spend up to $700 billion to relieve Wall Street of troubled assets backed by faltering home mortgages.

Negotiators emerged from a marathon session in the Capitol about 12:30 a.m. to announce that they had reached agreement on a proposal to give Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. broad authority to organize one of the biggest government interventions in the private sector since the Great Depression.

Full details of the plan were not immediately available. Lawmakers said their staffs would continue working through the night to commit them to paper. Under the plan, first put forward by the Bush administration in a late-night meeting with lawmakers just 10 days ago, Paulson would be authorized to purchase mortgage-backed assets from struggling firms in hopes of easing a credit crunch that has pushed global markets to the brink of collapse.

I don't think the entire crisis would go away, but changing THOSE rules would go a LONG way to banks being able to loan money again. The collapse of the credit markets (even to folks with GREAT CREDIT) is I'm afraid immenent because the banks don't have the capital to invest or loan because of that mark to market rule.
But we also need to totally repeal the Community Reinvestment Act to prevent lenders from HAVING to make mortgage loans to people who not only have poor or bad credit but also don't have or can't show sufficient income to carry the damn loan!

consider the "Community Organizer" role Barack Obama is so proud of. It is no secret Obama worked for ACORN in Chicago where part of his work was suing financial institutions to force CRA compliance. It is no secret he continues to support the goals and strategies of ACORN. This would put Obama neck deep in creating the problem he is now asking America to send him to Washington to fix.

"Another actuarial company has already said McCain has a 92 percent chance of surviving through two terms, and said he has another 8.4 years left in good health.

“I’ve seen remarks that (McCain) has a 1 in 3 probability of dying. That’s greatly overstated,” said James Brooks, a senior actuary at the Atlanta-based Bragg’s, a company that specializes in predicting mortality and morbidity.

Obama has a 98.5 percent chance of surviving his first term, and is expected to have another 21.9 years of healthy living, according to Brooks."

[Link: www.bostonherald.com...]

I remember back in 1980, back when Larry King was just late night radio hack, King was yammering on about Reagans age (I think he was 68). A caller pointed out that actuarially, it was more likely than not that Reagan would live long enough to serve 2 terms. King dismissed that as "absurd". Reagan lived another 24 years.

I remember this 28 years later. It pissed me off.

Who was the last POTUS that smoked? (cigarettes - not cigars, tobacco, not medicinal herbs)

Why, I'm glad you asked that!

After poking around on the Intertubes, I found the following tidbit of potentially true information:

A cigarette burning from the end of a holder became the trademark for Franklin Roosevelt. Warren Harding, who utilized every tobacco product, also found no problem lighting up whenever and wherever the urge struck him.

Howard Taft kicked the cigarette habit after his election as president. Dwight Eisenhower who rolled his own, sustained four packs a day, but quit cold turkey before his presidency. Lyndon Johnson used three packs a day until his heart attack forced an end to the habit.

Look at the 12V power outlets in your car. Those used to be for cigarette lighters. How long till the car companies change them to USB ports?

Never happen. USB port can't handle the power draw for the accessories that people want to plug in now. They may offer both, but unless they come up with a new power port, the "cigarette lighter" port will be with us for a long time.

Johnny Quest was one of the first victims of moonbat television censors. They said it was "too violent" for kids. God forbid, Doctor Quest actually let Johnny and Hadji shoot real guns at crocodiles!

Later, the claims of racism were thrown at it, although ironically it was the first children's TV series with a sympathetic non-white character (Hadji, who from his turban style is most likely a Sikh.)

I don't know. I stopped because the doc said it wasn't good for my blood pressure, which I have been trying to stablize for a number of years now. I smoked 2-3 packs a day.

A pipe wouldn't be a good substitute for me, since it's the nicotine and it's effect on my heart rate and blood pressure that is the issue.

My lungs, even after 40 years of smoking, are amazingly clear. I had no breathing problems, hacking, or all that common lung stuff.

It was simply I needed to stop my intake of nicotine. That's why I didn't even try using the patch or gum, I just went cold turkey (same as I did the booze 2 years ago).

I can't get my spinoff links to work, so I'm posting this in here and reporting it.

A biologist reviews an evolution textbook from the ID camp
By John Timmer
[Link: arstechnica.com...]

The politics of exploration
Ars book reviews typically focus on works for the general public that we consider significant and insightful. But today we're making an exception: the work in question is meant for school children, and it's an atrociously bad book. So why review it? Because, unfortunately, it may well turn out to be very significant. The leading lights of the Intelligent Design Movement, the Discovery Institute, have written this textbook on evolution, and they are doing everything they can to make sure it gets into schools.

In response to a column I wrote a few months back, one of the authors of the text, called Explore Evolution, kindly sent me a copy. What follows is not a comprehensive examination of the information contained in the text (which would require more text than EE itself), but rather a summary of the history and politics that make the book significant, and my own perspective as a biologist on how that context produced a text that's wildly inappropriate for use in a science classroom.

This doesn't mean that I won't mention the scientific evidence that's referenced in EE, but I generally won't delve into it in extensive detail. For the most part, extensive details aren't actually essential to understanding the problems with EE. So, with that caveat, we'll do as the Discovery Institute has, and start with the politics.

As they, whoever they are, say: Read The Whole Thing.
