Sad, sad day for a Dallas Cowboy fans.

On the previous thread, Pullus Iulius said (#138):

Sorry to go OT so early: A moonbattish friend apologized to me yesterday, saying that she and her family would have to pull against the Redskins today, and for the Cowboys. Apparently, whenever the Redskins have beaten the Cowboys in Dallas in a presidential election year, the Republicans have won the White House. Final score: Washington 26, Dallas 24 in an upset. Also, I was gratified to see no commercials for the 0bama thing during either the NASCAR or the NFL broadcasts. Discuss.

I hope this cheers you up!

I'm still unclear why there has to be a deal. GW Bush is on board, the democrats who have majorities in both houses of congress are on board, so just take the thing in and have a vote.

Especially in the house, there's no filibuster. If it's such a crisis, and it's such a great plan, vote it through on the party line and get POTUS to sign it.

Oh please let the GOP truly name names. The Dems cannot be allowed to get away with palming themselves off as the heroes here.

It's been bizarre since Thursday, when Barry apparently threw his tantrum in the big, important meeting, then flew away early Friday to play around in the debate hall. McCain flew right back to DC after the debate, Barry hit the campaign trail early Saturday, but was telling everybody he got the deal all wrapped up, and got all the pork thrown out.

And not a single republican argued or mocked his saying it.

And Paulson is still playing nice with his beloved Pelosi and Reid, like he has for at least a week.

ok, Pelosi, Frank and Dodd attacked, lied and spun the story of the bailout 180 degrees in their Hill statement and said that they never wanted the original bill as it was, so it was the DEMS who had to ride to the rescue to protect the taxpayers from government excess.

I wonder how then the Dems originally added all kinds of costly bells and whistles to the proposal, tried to rush the bill through the House blindly, and then took stock of voters outrage before adding much needed cuts and oversight? oh, so it was John McCain who spoilt the party and blew up the happy congressional family who so blithely tried to get the legislation done to shove the bill down our throats!

So help me, if in the Republican presser the speakers say only that is is a good bi-partisan agreement in which both sides worked very hard to get a good outcome, and thx to our Democrat friends blahblahblah.... I'm really, really going to crack...........

Hi folks - I need some input from all of you. My Dad lives down in Florida. He's old, kind of deaf without his hearing aids, had the house burn down a few weeks back and then last week he tripped trying to get to the phone in an unfamiliar house, ended up falling and fracturing his pelvis so now he is in a rehab center for the next two months. And he cannot hear on their phones at all.

So, we want to get him a cell phone so he can stay in contact with people. It need to have big buttons and not be too terribly complicated. Just looked at the Jitterbug - that's $147 and I'm not sure that we want to spend that much. Various family members can cover him with ATT, Verizon or Cingular plans. Do any of you have any ideas about a phone that is loud with big buttons? (The pictures on line just are not much help at all in judging size.)

The Eight Hundred Pound Gorilla in the room no one is mentioning is the Chinese. Wall Street sold a large pile of the toxic mortgages to them, and profited handsomely from the sales. (Do any lizards know how much exactly?) I'm hearing that they've basically told Wall Street "no more lending until you make good on the crap you sold us." That's why "foreign" (Chinese) banks are eligible to receive some of the government bailout money.

Without the Chinese lending to Wall Street, we have a huge problem. No one wants the American people to know how deeply Wall Street literally is in their debt.

Ah, you see Obama said he wasn't going back to vote "unless they needed him." And Pelosi said that those with a conflict of interest shouldn't vote. I figure that one of two things can happen here -

1. Obama stays away or does not cast a vote other than "present" - thereby confirming that he does indeed have a conflict of interest

2. He absolutely must go on record for or against and face the music - as in take the blame - if he wins and this doesn't work.

Looks like a win/win to me :)

The original bailout proposal had some 170 million, I think, earmarked for ACORN, La Raza and similar entities.

Mind-boggling, is it not?

Bear in mind that what has been published is specifically NOT the final draft on which they will vote. This is just a working draft open for comment. The ACORN provision could very well go right straight back into the final draft version. The game is not over until the vote is cast and the chickens are counted.

re: #68 runrabbitrun

like I said, I'm completely befuddled by the whole story line from the last week. First we have that bastard Reid screeching that McCain better come to town to sign on to the bailout. Then McCain shows up and brings the house GOP conservatives and their ideas with him, and suddenly Reid is screaming that McCain better get out of town.

Then we have Obama going out on Saturday morning and presenting the house GOP plan as if it was his own.

And Paulson happily giggling along with Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Schumer, Frank, et al.....

And again, if the White House and the party in control of congress want this deal done, they can do it today.

The U.S. needs a billion dollars a day to stay afloat. It is in nobody's best interests to dump their U.S. dollars. However, with international institutions dropping like flies, it's getting hairy. e.g. Fortis, Royal Bank of Scotland, etc. There is a cascading effect because of the international character of billions of dollars of financial derivatives.

No one wants the American people to know how deeply Wall Street literally is in their debt.

that could explain a few things...Paulson and Josh Bolten from Goldman Sachs, Bush friendly with the PRC, lord knows the libdems have no problem with selling us out to the PRC, nor does Obama

Obama's Monopoly Economic Bailout Plan

1. Everyone gets the same amount of money when you start.
2. All properties and utilities are split evenly.
3. If some jerk gains more money than others he must pay twice the going rate as a penalty...capitalist pig!
4. If you don't have enough money at any point during life you can make the rich guy pay your tax and bills.
5. The bank NEVER runs out of money...with Obama's Monopoly Bailout Plan every bank gets their very own Federal Reserve printing press.
6. There are no winners in life. If things get out of hand at any point the government has the right to collect everyone's assets...go back to number 1 and start life over.

Obama's hoping his Economic Plan will go into effect in January 2009.

A while back, Yellowstone National Park lost a huge portion of it's land and trees to fire...a crisis, if you will. I remember everyone claiming that the park would never be the same. The smart people (actual scientist...very similar to actual economist) knew that out of the destruction new life would arise and not only restore the park to it's former majesty, but provide the environment for even more growth and beauty. Especially in the house, there's no filibuster. If it's such a crisis, and it's such a great plan, vote it through on the party line and get POTUS to sign it.

Does this need 2/3 vote?

Nope, apparently they don't. My sis took it into her head about midnight last night to fly down there and see things for herself (she is a nurse). Truthfully realwest, we are all kind of looking on the two months in the rehab hospital as a blessing in disguise.

That fire was kind of funny in an odd sort of way. About a week before Dad noticed that the fire extinguisher had suddenly lost all its charge. The wife pitched a fit and refused to let him go buy a new one. At about the same time she refused to pay the homeowner's insurance. He snuck behind her back and paid it anyway. The stove suddenly went up in flames big enough to destroy the house when he turned on a pan to fry some fish. In the time he was breading fish for two. And when he went to use the kitchen phone it did not work. Luckily he was smart enough to immediately leave the house and go to the neighbors to call. Meanwhile the new wife (I've never met her) called the fire department from the bedroom phone, then reached through flames trying to turn off the stove and reach the baking powder to put out the fire. She has second degree burns all over her arms, face and neck. That was less than a month ago.

Now maybe that is all just strange coincidence. But as you know, as a scientist I don't put too much faith in "coincidence." And meanwhile, he at least has a TV - they've been staying at her daughter's spare house, where she has refused to let him cook and refused to hook up the TV. He has been very depressed.

Well, the Republicans made a few short statements and walked.

The Dems yakked and yakked and gave each other tons of praise.

The Republicans said McCain made a few phone calls.

The Dems tossed all sorts of credit to THE ONE for this bill.

/what to make of all this?

What can you say? McCain has given the GOP the finger time and time again. He is The Maverick, after all. Childish of them not to rally behind him, and sucks for, well, the 300 million Americans who would suffer under Obama. But then, that's politics for ya

re: #149 kiwidoc

I sent this to Charles, not realizing there was an open thread....

Watching the impending economical "catastrophe," I was struck with the memory of a more natural "catastrophe." A while back, Yellowstone National Park lost a huge portion of it's land and trees to fire...a crisis, if you will. I remember everyone claiming that the park would never be the same. The smart people (actual scientist...very similar to actual economist) knew that out of the destruction new life would arise and not only restore the park to it's former majesty, but provide the environment for even more growth and beauty. I can't help but think we could all learn a lesson from Mother Nature.

Yup - all those environuts that scream and yell about cutting so much as a twig in any of the national forests have no cause to then yell about forest fires.

One of the GOP spokespeople DID sneak in the briefest of 'thankews' to John McCain for helping to get the bill turned around.... so what if that's bubkes compared to the Dems 10 minute barrage of attacks on Republicans earlier this afternoon, before they even got around to mentioning the status of the bill?

No, it's time to start jumping up and down because of the real fragility of the financial system. Do you suppose Congress works on weekends for no reason. This is a crisis.
There will be plenty of time to assign blame. In the meantime, the bill needs to be passed so that the world markets don't freeze up and cease trading. Yes, it is that serious.

That is what I've been thinking. He has always loved technology - his eyes light right up when he comes home and lays eyes on the laptops. All of the girls have offered to get together and give him one - he can't write well anymore but he can type like a speed demon. She flatly refuses to have one in the house.

The last time I talked to him before the house burned down she was suddenly screaming at him like a banshee - I've not heard the like in some time. I don't remember what it was about, but it was disturbing.

And since the fire she has kept him pretty isolated - the not even so much as a TV for a man that is still intellectually very vibrant really disturbs me.

We did mention right after the fire that maybe he should come home for "a while" - first thing he asked was if he could have a dog.

Absolutely furious. 100% furious. surely Bush isn't just letting his personal anger at McCain motivate him to hand the WH to Obama, and the congress to Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi in even stronger majorities?

Paulson's behavior has been shameful, as has GW Bush's....for at least a week. And I'm despairing of coming up with a good reason for it.

Um.

Have your sister contact the ombudsperson and request an audit. Anyone can do it, and a relative can make all the difference.

The wife's medical control only extends so far. Particularly if she stands to benefit substantially from certain kinds of actions.

We don't want to upset him by making any waves that we don't have to make. Right now he is safe, he is lucid so he is in charge of what they do to him medically and my sister is there. If at all possible we would like to just get him on a plane the day they let him out of rehab for a "few months" at home while the house is rebuilt. If we can get him on the plane with no fuss then he won't be going back.

Americans,

Any time there is this much dust in the air in Washington D.C. it means the two party evil money cult is up to no good. This time it looks like the Republicans are in the dark also. The Democrats are covering up something big, the prior crimes, or unknown crimes about to happen, or they know we are about to get on their snake trail.

All you have to do is look at them, its like a line up at New York worst
police precinct, you know down where the real dirt gets done, and the shifty "lying eyes" would make an Eagles song cover.

Tinfoil hat on now, they're prepping the socialization of the financial sector ahead of the coronation of their media blessed stooge (the Obama).

Every single thing you've written is disturbing.

Foundation Acquires Letters Sent From Prisoners of Nazi Concentration Camps

Letters secretly carried by children through the sewers of Warsaw, Poland, during the 1944 uprising. A 1933 card from a Dachau camp commander outlining strict rules for prisoner mail. A 1943 letter from a young man, who spent time in Auschwitz, to his parents.

The more than 250 World War II postal documents — cards, letters and stamps — have been acquired by an Illinois foundation from a private collector and will soon be on permanent display in a museum in suburban Chicago.

Again from the yahoo story:

A breakthrough came when Democrats agreed to incorporate a GOP demand — letting the government insure some bad home loans rather than buy them. That would limit the amount of federal money used in the rescue.

Another important bargain, vital to attracting support from centrist Democrats, would require that the government, after five years, submit a plan to Congress on how to recoup any losses from the companies that got help.

I think that's a pretty big victory for our side out of this mess.

After the war he wrote down his memories and then put it aside in a drawer. Now as an old man he met someone who took an interest in his story - and turned out to be a writer. kiwidoc (#149),

Well said.

Its sad when Bill Clinton is willing to place the blame on himself and congressional democrats, but GWB won't.

Bill Clinton actually a more honorable man than GWB? shudder but dammit, it's starting to look that way

My dad says that Bill Clinton is just a whole lot smarter than GWB

also says GWB's being a moron is why he was so easily steamrolled by Paulson et al (most of whom are Goldman Sachs alumni) into jumping on board the 700 billion slush fund for wall street bankers

File this under liberal hyprocrasy.

Got up early this morning....put on gospel music program on local non-profit radio. The one of the hosts is a pastor at a local Baptist church. Radio station is non-profit....tax exempt. They spent much program campaigning for Obama. Telling how we have to get him elected. Need to get registered to vote. How to get rides to the polls. Etc. I really don't have a problem with this.....but if this were a white conservative Republican doing the same thing.....

Then I open up my paper. They have a NYT store on McCain ties to gambling concerns. Hmmm, for years, those of us on the right have been wondering why we don't see stories on how Big Trible Gaming controls the Democratic party. It's amazing how it's only a story when one side does it.

Good evening.

So far the Plan seems to be having the intended effect:

ASIA MARKETS
Financials rise after U.S. bailout plan unveiled

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Asian markets advanced early Monday on financials such as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, as details of the U.S. government's $700 billion financial rescue plan were unveiled.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 Average gained 1% to 12,008.48 and the broader Topix index climbed 0.7% to 1,155.33.
South Korea's Kospi advanced 0.8% to 1,488.09 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 1% to 4,953.80, while New Zealand's NZX 50 index climbed 0.8% to 3,214.27.

In other news, the Bears are tied with the Eagles 7-7.

The one and only thing going for the Bears are they are going up against the only QB in the pros that I know of who is absolutely incapable of reading a blitz. Maybe the Bears defense can score a couple of times on picks.

Forgive me if I give the jaundiced eye treatment when, suddenly, somebody burst on the scene and says we need 700 bil pronto, and no time for debate. I was born at night, but it was not last night.

Complaints that flooding the country with unskilled and undocumented immigrants are having a negative impact on society and the economy go unanswered. When pressed to build a fence people in government claim it is too expensive.

Complaints that good American jobs are going oversees go unanswered. When pressed they say the free-market will sort it out ignoring the fact that those countries are not free.

But the moment the wallets of the politicians and their lobbyists are in danger, suddenly they find the money, suddenly they care about the American's losing their jobs, suddenly the free-market can't sort it out. I'm with you. I feel like I'm getting scammed.

From the yahoo story:

But Democrats surrendered other cherished goals: letting judges rewrite bankrupt homeowners' mortgages and steering any profits gained toward an affordable housing fund.

I'm guessing that was the ACORN provision?

There is this provision in Section 110:

Assisstance to Homeowners:

In the case of a residential mortgage loan, modifications under paragraph one may include:

(A) reduction in interest rates;
(B) reduction of loan principle; and
(C) other similar modifications

No mention yet that I've seen of a housing fund, but haven't read all.

this book has seen much work, creased corners, grease stains,
notes here and there... was much discussion about seeing a new wife
learning to teach herself to be a good cook for her husband and family

My mother learned to cook out of the 1947 version, blue and white plaid cover with a perfect imprint of the stove burner in black on the back. One of my best childhood memories. Dad wanted to keep her copy, so we girls have hunted up copies of our own - and replaced them a couple of times because finding one that has not been through the mill is rare indeed.

Now, legal plunder can be committed in an infinite number of ways. Thus we have an infinite number of plans for organizing it: tariffs, protection, benefits, subsidies, encouragements, progressive taxation, public schools, guaranteed jobs, guaranteed profits, minimum wages, a right to relief, a right to the tools of labor, free credit, and so on, and so on. All these plans as a whole—with their common aim of legal plunder—constitute socialism.

Agreed that Warren Buffet is always rooting for Warren Buffet. That does not mean he is incapable of analyzing the financial health of a particular business. Obama is a jerk who can't remember what he said three minutes ago. I believe NOTHING that he says. However, the dollar is propped up by debt & the confidence of the world that it is still THE reserve currency. The financial geniuses in government, Wall Street, and the SEC and bond regulators who created this mess are realizing that they do not know how to fix it. Again, there's plenty of time for blame. However there are real and international fires springing up every hour. The U.S. is doing its best to hold the ship together as fast as possible. Of course it is not good legislation. Who comes up with good legislation overnight in a crisis?

Then Bush truly is a moron. McCain ran in 2000 on campaign finance reform, and Bush signed it into law. He could have vetoed it.

The Gang of 14 got Roberts and Alito through confirmation.

If Bush is doing payback, it's because McCain called him and Rumsfeld out starting back in 2004 because they were losing Iraq. Even Joe "partition plan" Biden was calling for more money/equipment for our troops and more aggressive stance over there in late 2004...Bush didn't pull his head out of his ass about Iraq until the loss of congress in 2006.

So if Bush is selfish, foolish, callow enough to toss the nation over to Obama, Reid, and Pelosi because McCain was right about Iraq a full 2 years before Bush dropped his "stay the course" rhetoric...well, screw him.

Agreed. We have been living beyond our means for a long time. That alone hacks me off, since I live responsibly, pay my bills on time, and only borrow for major expenses, like a house. I even pay cash for my cars.

I can't take much more of this 'winning' stuff. I ain't used to it.

Don't worry about it. Eagles just scored again.

Our good friend realwest, with all his health problems, would have put up a stronger defense.

Is it possible someone pulled a trigger for this crisis to explode now, before the elections? I believe this crisis was going to happen but the timing is just to beneficial to Obama to be coincidence.

Don't trust him and his ilk.

Yes, congrats to the Cubs and to the Brewers.

Thanks for the good wishes but my team does not deserve to be in the playoffs. They choked for a week.

By the way, I'd appreciate your prayers. I have a 2nd interview tomorrow for a possible new career level position (I retired from my previous career in August).

Pray that it goes well for me, please.

I will pray for it, whether you tell me what the new position is or not!

This is awesome awesome awesome.
McCain better get on it!

ad suggestions for McCain:

Pictures of Barney Frank and Chris “the senator from Countrywide” Dodd. Explain to voters that although the Democrats are saying this is all the fault of the Republicans not regulating, we’re in this $700 billion dollar mess because Democrats in Congress wanted Wall Street to hand money over to people who couldn’t afford these mortgages, and then these same Democrats wanted big donations from Fannie and Freddie. So they protected their financial friends and blocked regulation that might have stopped this disaster. The Clinton administration tried to stop them. The Bush administration tried to stop them. Alan Greenspan tried to stop them. Ben Bernanke tried to stop them. But no one could stop them. Now they’re saying its everyone’s fault but theirs. America: you don’t live in Barney Frank’s district and you don’t live in Chris Dodd’s state. You can’t vote them out of office. But you can vote against the Senator who voted with them and who wants to be President with your money. With Barney Frank in the House and Chris Dodd in the Senate, can you afford Barack Obama in in the White House?

Mama W. you making the holiday trip down here to buy some goodies from the Swedish bakery on Clark St this year?

I might order online this year. Since my father in law ran over my mother in law last Christmas and killed her, we may tone down the festivities a bit this season. We always took the trip together. This year I think I may do it differently. We'll see.

You are certainly doing your part to spread the message! (I have sent it to everyone I know, and many, many people I don't. Oh, you're in my email log? Watch this!)

I didn't get a sweetheart loan. Did you? My neighbors didn't. My folks didn't. My Aunties didn't. I'm pissed, and I'm going to keep linking that video.

Away with the whims of governmental administrators, their socialized projects, their centralization, their tariffs, their government schools, their state religions, their free credit, their bank monopolies, their regulations, their restrictions, their equalization by taxation, and their pious moralizations!
And now that the legislators and do-gooders have so futilely inflicted so many systems upon society, may they finally end where they should have begun: May they reject all systems, and try liberty; for liberty is an acknowledgment of faith in God and His works.

This "bailout" will make the problem worse.

Our elected leaders are lying to us, they don't have a clue.

The only solution is Economic Liberty, less government interference in the Free Market.

If you support government intervention in the current "crisis", then you are, by definition, a socialist. Socialists are not bad people, just ignorant of human nature.

This is how democracies end, and fascism begins.

427 lewisge  Sun, Sep 28, 2008 6:23:17pm

I just read through the draft of the bailout bill.

As someone who spent years dutifully paying off their mortgage and carefully managing credit, sections 109 and 110 just turn my stomach.

Also, the Oversight Board is anything BUT independent. It is the fox guarding the hen house. It is the same cast of characters who created this mess in the first place. Again… it is nauseating.

I'll watch Huck again.

I'll admit I didn't give the enterprise a fair chance - it just seemed too weird and unsettling to me, even the concept of a recently retired Presidential candidate so soon turning to what I feared expected would be club-style entertainment. But now I'm learning that the show was more subtle than that; personal political commentary & advice in a patriotic, country style. I'll try to give 'Huckabee' another shot, but I kinna say I'll be able to hang in there when I recall some of his compassionate conservative and evangelical-right views.
