The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville— Nancy Pelosi has struck out.

He says that every time the talk about "fixing" the economy the price of oil goes up - that the lifeblood is being sucked out of our economy by oil and that no bailout means that the price of oil is going to tank and some of the biggest losers are actually going to be the oil producers in the ME that invest "their" money in our stock market.

Statement from McCain campaign:

From the minute John McCain suspended his campaign and arrived in Washington to address this crisis, he was attacked by the Democratic leadership: Senators Obama and Reid, Speaker Pelosi and others. Their partisan attacks were an effort to gain political advantage during a national economic crisis. By doing so, they put at risk the homes, livelihoods and savings of millions of American families.

Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill.

Just before the vote, when the outcome was still in doubt, Speaker Pelosi gave a strongly worded partisan speech and poisoned the outcome.

This bill failed because Barack Obama and the Democrats put politics ahead of country.

So, I was reading up on what the NJ House delegation had to say about today's events. To summarize:

Well, Steve Rothman has decided that the reason he voted against the bill was because it contained not enough money for a homeowner bailout.

That's right. let's ignore the multibillion dollar bailout for subprime homeowners last December. He wanted more.

Did I mention he's a Democrat.

Meanwhile, Scott Garrett says that the bailout was a bad bill and while the final bill included an insurance option, the Treasury was under no obligation to use it. It was still better than the one as first proposed, but not sufficient to protect taxpayers.

Oh, and he's a GOPer.

But we all know who gets blamed here - McCain and the GOP. Because that's how these things work.

re: #62 Tigger2005

The fact is a bill does need to pass. Time to roll up the sleeves and draft a good one.

From Dick Morris's piece this morning (pre-vote):

The Democrats and our politically-challenged president have failed to appreciate the difference between spending and lending. Treasury Secretary Paulson can be excused for not realizing it. Politics is not his thing.

But John McCain must realize the crucial distinction and must use his leverage to stop a taxpayer-funded bailout, insisting instead on loans and insurance.

If McCain stands firm, the Democrats will either have to pass the bailout package on their own, without Republican votes, and rely on Bush's signature on the bill to provide a fig leaf of bipartisanship, or they will have to cave in and pass the Republican package.

Either way, McCain comes out ahead.

If he gets his way, he gets credit for the bailout. If he doesn't, he can spend the campaign attacking Obama and the Democrats for spending $700 billion of taxpayer money.

If the Democrats don't adopt either course and play a game of chicken with the Republicans, their congressional status as the majority party dooms them to taking the blame for any ensuing collapse.

Voters can count.

They know that Reid and Pelosi are Democrats and that they control Congress. With this power comes responsibility.

And if the Democrats do nothing — that is, if they fail to use their majorities to pass a bailout or to cooperate with the Republicans in adopting the GOP version of the package — it is they who will get the blame for the catastrophe which will follow.

I e-mailed the one on SpaceX this morning to several of geek friends, and I've gotten 3 replies saying "great link" so far. One of the e-mails went out to my wife at school saying "It's a great one to show students".
... I may have goofed with the school system one. Charles is probably delivering a lot of bandwidth to support the video.

Responding to a partisan attack with a partisan attack. Not as strong as it could have been.

McCain should have been saying that the Democrats failed to maintain their own caucus, and McCain delivered enough GOPers had Pelosi been able to deliver on her side of the aisle. She did not.

Now, we've got to fix the mess we're in, and this is how we're going to do it.

We're going to roll up our sleeves and work to deal with the toxic paper at the source. We're going to fix the way that the government forced banks to lend to subprimes, and then we're going to work on helping banks get themselves healthy.

That means working on a way to deal with the toxic paper. It means assisting the banks in a framework of market capitalism, not with still more regulatory red tape that only served to drive this crisis in the first place.

Not so much about the economy as about the blame. Obama, the Dems, and their propaganda press toadies will all shackle the blame to the Republicans. I fear this was the day McCain lost the election...and the cost to our liberties will be catastrophic.

You're forgetting something: voter sentiment has been running better than 9-to-1 AGAINST the bailout bill. If the GOP gets the blame for this bill failing today, then either of two things will happen:

1) Democrats will pass an even more unpopular bill on their own, or

2) Congress will make the bill less unpalatable to voters, and then the Dems will have to concede the credit to the GOP (having already declared the GOP votes the deciding factor in the defeat of the first bill).

I don't think McCain should attempt to take credit for the number of GOP votes he delivered: most voters hated the bill in the first place.

McCain should indeed say that Pelosi couldn't wrangle her own party to save this bill. Then he should take your suggestion of presenting the House GOP alternative plan as the best way forward, along with the other legislative reforms you outlined.

193 calcajun  Mon, Sep 29, 2008 1:31:35pm

Good! We don't need a bailout. It was a bill designed to insure people against their own stupidity!

The Pelosi/Reid Congress last week bailed out the big three auto makers for 25 billion.

The subprime lenders got a bailout last year.

Let them burn. For the money they are planning on spending, you can buy up all the notes and bad mortgages in the country and have about 69 billion left over.

No matter what happens, this is all bad news for the McCain campaign. In politics, perception is reality and since people are perceiving this as all happening on the GOP's watch, then it's the party's fault--no matter what history we try to tell.

From Politico (this is leadership?!?):

Obama proven overly optimistic

Obama's prepared remarks, from earlier today in Colorado.

And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have agreed on an emergency rescue plan that is our best and only way to prevent an economic catastrophe.

Not so much.

UPDATE:

After seeing the bill fail, Obama scapped the originial script and talked of Rocky Mountain-like turbulence

And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have a responsibility to make sure that an emergency rescue package is put forward that can at least stop the immediate problems we have so we can begin to plan for the future. As I said, this is a hard thing to do. And right now Democratic and Republican leaders have agreed but members have not yet agreed.

There are going to be some bumps and trials and tribulations and ups and down before we get this rescue package done. It is important for the American public and for the markets to say calm because things are never smooth in congress and to understand that it will get done. That we are going to make sure an emergency package is put together because it is required for us to stabilize the markets and to make sure that when a small business-person wakes up tomorrow morning, he will be able to make payroll.

We are not going to lose jobs at an even faster clip than we are doing right now. I am confident we are going to get there but it’s going to be sort of rocky. It’s sort of like flying into Denver. You know you’re going to land but it’s not always fun going over those mountains.

The Pelosi/Reid Congress last week bailed out the big three auto makers for 25 billion.

That was a loan guarantee, IIRC. Just like the Chrysler bail-out loan, which was paid off early.

203 Irenike  Mon, Sep 29, 2008 1:34:26pm

Here's an idea. The government should take all the money it funnels to colleges and higher education, and use that to fund the bail-out. And if that isn't enough to solve the problem, then they should friggin' nationalize the whole university system, and put all professors on a salary equivalent to what my trash collector makes. Hell, all those lefty professors ought to be thrilled to be a goverment employee. They love government intervention so much, or at least that's what they say.

She needs to drive home everything Reagan in this encounter. Whatever anyone says, McCain is part of the establishment, just by virtue of his time in Washington.

Palin put the spark back in the GOP. Up until that point, it was going through the motions. She weathered the storm so it seems. Unless someone is holding on to some damaging information, the opposition did their best to destroy her, and they failed.

The devastation that could happen with a chaotic economic meltdown and MSM fed panic could be significant. It's one hell of a gamble to allow a strictly market based fix for a problem caused by Gov't meddling in the first place. I'm still not sure which side of this I fall on, especially with a couple homes upside-down on their mortgage/value ratio, even if I have managed to make all the payments on time so far.

There should be but no... Although Omar has said some very interesting stuff today...

“I do believe in them, and we need to put some guys around them, but we also have to consider do we have to shake the tree. We have to consider all those things…Look, this town and our fan base is about championships. They don’t want to hear we won 80–something games. They don’t want to hear that we got to the first round of the playoffs…This is not a young-team town. Those days are over. This is a town that pays, (pause), that’s invested in their ballclub, and ownership is committed to investing back, and winning, and getting to the playoffs, even in 2006, that’s not good enough here. I understand that here. We don’t start the year thinking, ‘OK, we’re just gonna get to the playoffs.’ That’s not what this town is about, and I can tell you as a General Manager that that’s not what I’m about. Our goal is to get to the World Series, win the World Series, and continue to win it, but the bottom line is we can’t even get to the playoffs so we need to find a better way to work hard at this.”

After at least 10 years (actually more) of professing to the world that all they want is an "independent 'Palestine'" on their homeland which includes Judea, Samaria, Gaza, and 1/2 of Jerusalem, Olmert (the traitor) offered it to them for a promise of peace. He then went an offered Syria all of the Golan Heights for the same worthless promise of peace.

After getting more than they could have ever expected...they do what they always do...see the weakness of Israel and demand more!

There is no downside to the Phakestinians choosing violence, and murder instead of less than all of Israel. Israel hasn't given them an "or else", so why take less than all?

Worst part is that once Israel gives away all of Gaza, Judea, Samaria, Jerusalem, and the Golan, there is no incentive for the Arabs to not take the next step of the Phased Plan, and (with the military advantage) attack, or simply destroy Israel by taking up the Terrorism in full force, and waiting the feckless "leadership" of Israel out.

Israel has already shown that no matter how much Terrorism, and attacks come from land they have traded in peace deals (Gaza for example) they will not go back in an resettle it. Thus, why should/would this be any different if/when they give away Yesha, and Golan? At that point, the Phakestinians no longer have any incentive to accept peace, and most logically would just start up again with Violence, and Terrorism until they can get more land from Israel, and eventually accomplish their stated goal of destroying it.

(that being said, this was all prophesied...)

Ugh, I need to get my head right for Tonight.....have a good one! Shana Tova!

Ladies and gentlemen,

This is not a big deal. 6% is a bump in comparison. I know your stocks and retirement accounts will suffer and if you are retiring soon, then I recommend later.

The bail out is NOT NECESSARY. Congress just has to change a couple of rules to allow the banks to sell off there bad debt, because that market is frozen. Tell your Congress man or woman to vote for a "MARK TO MARKET" change to the accounting reporting rules. This will open up the market to sell off. While the Demos were in congress they wanted to reduce another ERON and so they called on MARK TO MARKET changes that forced the banks to report losses immediately. It is a little more complicated than that so please don't panic.

Palin needs to be on fire in her debate.

She is the hinge upon how this door can swing.

I agree that Palin can help enormously, but I'm not allowing Mac to bail out on the leadership of his own ticket, dammit. If he can't see the problems that are sinking his campaign's ship, then he's going to be as blind as CiC. He's better than that, as his own bio shows - we can't have the meme out that he needs his less-experienced VP to rescue his @ss.

McCain did an about-face this summer, woke up and replaced his clueless and faltering top managers quite effectively. He better smell the coffee now, too.

OT: Terror Sympathizing Spectator Trying to Influence Jury in Holy Land Retrial?

After jurors filed out of the courtroom for lunch Monday, U.S. District Judge Jorge Solis called out to a woman sitting in the front row of the visitor's gallery. The courtroom froze.

He asked her to come closer to the bench and show him the documents in her hand, and she held up a magazine. On one side was a map of what appeared to be Israel and the Palestinian territories. On the other, in huge bold-face, was a headline "HATE SPEECH" atop an article.

"There," said the judge. "That's what I saw." Are you trying to influence the jury with that? he asked.

The woman, standing in front of the judge's bench, mumbled something that sounded like no. He then told her that her conduct was improper, but told her she could still attend the trial.

Court security officers are now cracking down on material being brought into the courtroom.

I am inclined to agree. There is blame enough to go around to both parties, and it has become clear why the Republican Party is called the Stupid Party. Certainly the Democratic Party is the Evil Party, but their handlers and their fellow travelers in the media will be able to spin and cater to the common desire for a free lunch, and Obama will dazzle with all the brilliance of Lucifer.

371 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Mon, Sep 29, 2008 2:06:50pm

I can see how House Republicans balked.

Pelosi, instead of giving a speech calling for all to stand together, instead of addressing the legitimate concerns of both sides, instead of taking the high road, took the other road.

She began by heaping the whole mess on the Republican's, who wouldn't want to support her after that? I particularly found it obscene for her to blame Bush without referring to the extenuating circumstances of the war. Believe it or not, 911 cost this country a huge amount, I have heard it cost over a trillion or more in loses, damages, insurance payouts, airline stock equity and destruction of our tourism industry. Prosecuting a global war to make Americans safe has cost quite a bit too. And leaves aside the fact that a sizable chunk of the Clinton surplus she so lovingly referred to came at the price of the country not being ready to fight a war.

If she had been bipartisan, she might have admitted that members in her own party had not done right in some of the laws they passed and did not allow to pass. While Rep. Frank has truthfully worked hard on the bailout, he owes it to taxpayers to make up for his blocking regulation of Fannie and Freddie.

Speaker Pelosi, the first thing you do as a leader in a crisis is be 100% honest about the situation, try to bring everyone together to effectuate the common good. today you failed in that role. You did so at a critical time and you let the entire country down. You should resign as speaker. I would recommend the Democrats name Bill Clinton to act as Speaker until another can be named.

There is simply no forgiving your leadership failure Madam speaker and specifically your partisanship at a time when we needed unity.

373 zombie  Mon, Sep 29, 2008 2:07:50pm

When the economy grows, it grows slowly. Everyone smiles, and doesn't say a word, a mutually agreed-upon silence so as not to break the spell.

When the economy falters, it crashes spectacularly, like an orchestra falling down a flight of stairs. Everybody screams and panics and points fingers at each other.

And when the dust settles, the silent, unacknowleged climb starts again.

For some reason, we take continuous economic growth as our birth right, something we deserve. The inevitable (and natural) occasional downturns are perceived as an affront to human dignity.

And yet, in a few weeks, or even days, bargain-hunters will start to snatch up the undervalued stocks and properties, and the cycle will begin all over again.

I do not own stock. I am not being foreclosed on. I don't have a pile of uninsured money in a failing bank. So, to me, this is just a bizarre bit of performance art. And I'm quite confident that the world's economy will soon be back on its feel again and just keep chugging along, as it has been for uncountable centuries.

re: #311 pre-Boomer Marine brat

Yes, he was an actor.

Much as I dearly love John Wayne, watching him do that uni-faceted characterization in some of his roles does get to be a disappointment.

You never saw The Quiet Man? The Searchers? Wake of The Red Witch? John Wayne was a fine actor, he didn't "play himself" as many have complained, he put himself into his roles, a school of acting as legitimate as its opposite school, method acting. But don't take my word for it. USC's film school is sponsoring a retrospective of The Duke.

John Wayne was larger than life. An unabashed conservative. Two-fisted. Macho.

He was also a superb craftsman who worked with some of the landmark directors of the 20th century, including John Ford, Howard Hawks, William Wellman and Don Siegel. Though he died in 1979 at age 72, his legacy looms large.

So large that USC's School of Cinematic Arts, collaborating with Visions and Voices: The USC Arts & Humanities Initiative, is offering a three-day scholarly examination of the Duke titled "John Wayne: Actor, Star, Icon, Trojan."

"When you have a conversation with people about John Wayne, the feeling is, 'Ah, well, he wasn't that much of an actor,' " says USC film professor Rick Jewell. "But if you have really seen most of his work, you know that is far from the case. He was an extraordinary actor."

As well there should be. It's been time to clean House for a while. My choices are Debbie Havlverson (D) and Marty Ozinga (R). She's involved in the Illinois legislature as a Blagojevich ally. He's a political neophyte, but he is also the head of a large concrete company in Chicagoland.

I smell a rat.

The only reason Pelosi would have stood up there and trashed the Republicans when sensitive legislation, requiring crucual bi-partisan support was on the line, would be to sink its chances of passage.

I think the Dems realize their chances of election in November are increased inversely to how bad the economy gets. Fucking pathetic.

The Cloward-Piven Strategy. It describes their agenda, tactics, and long-term strategy.

The Strategy was first elucidated in the May 2, 1966 issue of The Nation magazine by a pair of radical socialist Columbia University professors, Richard Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven. David Horowitz summarizes it as:

The strategy of forcing political change through orchestrated crisis. The "Cloward-Piven Strategy" seeks to hasten the fall of capitalism by overloading the government bureaucracy with a flood of impossible demands, thus pushing society into crisis and economic collapse.

Cloward and Piven were inspired by radical organizer [and Hillary Clinton mentor] Saul Alinsky:

"Make the enemy live up to their (sic) own book of rules," Alinsky wrote in his 1989 book Rules for Radicals. When pressed to honor every word of every law and statute, every Judeo-Christian moral tenet, and every implicit promise of the liberal social contract, human agencies inevitably fall short. The system's failure to "live up" to its rule book can then be used to discredit it altogether, and to replace the capitalist "rule book" with a socialist one. (Courtesy Discover the Networks.org)

Hijacked arms headed to Sudan, not Kenya

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: A U.S. Navy spokesman says a weapons shipment on a Ukrainian ship hijacked by Somalian pirates was headed to unknown buyers in Sudan, not Kenya.

Lt. Nathan Christensen, a deputy spokesman for the U.S. 5th Fleet in Bahrain, says it is not known whom exactly in Sudan the weapons were meant for.

A 5th Fleet statement Monday says the ship was headed for the Kenyan port of Mombassa, but that "additional reports state the cargo was intended for Sudan."

but what I'd like someone to tell me is why we have the treasury secretary running around for two weeks now spreading such panic about our economy? i've heard from him about Armageddon, about how companies can't make payroll, people can't get car loans or student loans, etc. why is it these stories are not being reported on? why is it that this bill was so unpopular with mainstreet America if all these devastating things are going on? if these things were happening, wouldn't the calls to congress for action be like 100 to 1 in favor of taking quick action.

Citigroup to buy Wachovia banking operations

NEW YORK - Citigroup agreed Monday to purchase Wachovia's banking operations for $2.1 billion in a deal arranged by federal regulators, making the Charlotte-based bank the latest casualty of the widening global financial crisis.

The deal greatly expands Citigroup's retail franchise — giving it a total of more than 4,300 U.S. branches and $600 billion in deposits — and secures its place among the U.S. banking industry's Big Three, along with Bank of America Corp. and JPMorgan Chase & Co.

But it comes at a cost: Citigroup Inc. said it will slash its quarterly dividend in half to 16 cents. It also will dilute existing shareholders by selling $10 billion in common stock to shore up its capital position.

In addition to assuming $53 billion worth of debt, Citigroup will absorb up to $42 billion of losses from Wachovia's $312 billion loan portfolio, with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. agreeing to cover any remaining losses. Citigroup also will issue $12 billion in preferred stock and warrants to the FDIC.

The remainder of Wachovia will include its asset management, retail brokerage and certain select parts of its wealth management businesses, including the Evergreen and Wachovia Securities franchises. It will continue to be a public company under the Wachovia name.

The agreement comes after a fevered weekend courtship in which Citigroup and Wells Fargo & Co. both were reportedly studying the books of Wachovia Corp., which was weighed down by losses linked to its ill-timed 2006 acquisition of mortgage lender Golden West Financial Corp.

Wachovia, like Washington Mutual Inc., which was seized by the federal government last week, was a big originator of option adjustable-rate mortgages, which offered very low introductory payments and let borrowers defer some interest payments until later years. Delinquencies and defaults on these types of mortgages have skyrocketed in recent months, causing big losses for the banks.

Wachovia shares, which had slumped as the global credit crisis intensified in recent months, dropped $8.20, or 82 percent, to $1.80 as trading resumed Monday afternoon. They had traded as high as $52.25 over the past year.

The FDIC asserted Monday that Wachovia did not fail, and that all depositors are protected and there will be no immediate cost to the Deposit Insurance Fund.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, in a statement Monday, said he supports the "timely actions" taken by the FDIC "which demonstrate our government's unwavering commitment to financial and economic stability."

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said in a statement that the sale of Wachovia's banking operations to Citigroup would "mitigate potential market disruptions." Paulson said he agreed with the FDIC and the Fed that a "failure of Wachovia would have posed a systemic risk" to the nation's financial system.

The deal is essentially a vote of confidence in Citigroup's capital strength, said Sandler O'Neill & Partners analyst Jeff Harte in a note to investors. "We are skeptical that the FDIC would have brokered a deal to sell Wachovia's assets and liabilities into weak hands," he said.

These House Republicans are so stupid!

Don't they understand that they're opening a new era of leftist dominance, not only in the Presidency, but also in the House and in the Senate, as long as the one opened in 1932, for two decades in the White House and for six decades in Congress?

I ask all who wish to answer: is it all over for McCain?

Why would you think such a thing? This will be off of the news cycle pretty quickly and in the meanwhile the Russian nuclear navy is steaming to the Western hemisphere to hold war games in our back yard for the first time in history. That is McCain's bailiwick by a very long shot.

Banks are cutting off business loans at this time. These guys will offer you a loan at an ungodly interest rate for processing your credit cards. They make money off your credit card service fees and the interest off the loan. A lot of small businesses use revolving credit to meet payroll...that line is gone.

From The Daily Telegraph:

US economy: Wall Street bailout analysis - revolt on Main Street
Hours after President George W. Bush put his dwindling prestige on the line to plead for his Wall Street bailout bill, his Republican colleagues in Congress cast it aside amid a revolt from Main Street.

By Toby Harnden in Washington
Last Updated: 9:07PM BST 29 Sep 2008

As the House of Representatives rejected the £380 billion bill and went back to the drawing board, political farce turned into political crisis. Congress – one of the few national institutions to be even more unpopular than Mr Bush – was in a state of paralysis.

The proximity of the November 4th election – when all 435 seats in the House are up for grabs – as well as the interlocking problems of Mr Bush’s lack of political capital and the anger against Wall Street and the Washington class doomed the bill.

No Republican wanted to vote for a bill that their own leader Representative, John Boehner, had just described as a “crap sandwich” and that outraged constituents from coast to coast saw as an immoral formula that left taxpayers footing the bill for the fat cats.

Hey, is there something wrong with me? I've been making a circuit of the blogs and most of them seem to be in full Chicken Little mode. And this includes Conservative Blogs. It's almost like they've been taken over by Mobys. The distress seems to be centered on the fact that several Republicans did not vote for this monstrosity, therefore the GOP is entirely to blame (ignoring the 93 or so Dems who voted no, too) and now Obama is a shoo-in for the presidency, there willl be wall to wall Donkeys in the House and the Senate, and on and on and wailing and gnashing of teeth. Newt G. now saying Reps should have voted for it.

Frankly I can't see how panicking is going to help matters. Also, the Senate is going to pass its own version, after which this thing has to be hashed out in conference . This will take a few days, anyhow. Nevertheless, some are saying McCain is toast, blah blah blah. I can't understand this reaction at all. Somebody please explain.

Moreover, the Fed will make a total of $620 billion available to other central banks, expanding ongoing currency "swap" arrangements with them where dollars are traded for their currencies. That's up from $290 billion previously in such arrangements.

Pelosi's Rant [Shannen Coffin]

House Republicans are suggesting that Nancy Pelosi's floor speech scared some of their rank-and-file away. But equally importantly, did it scare away some of her own rank-and-file? Between the railing about "failed Bush economic policies," and dramatically emphasizing the "SEVEN. . . HUNDRED . . . BILLION. . . DOLLARS," it is a wonder that anyone wanted to vote for the bill. Wouldn't the job of the Speaker in that situation be to try to solidify her own party and draw in as many Republicans as she possibly can? Or is it simply to set up the blame game for later? Perhaps Nancy knew when she took the floor that there was no way that the bill was going to pass, and thus she decided to let er rip. But tactically, this speech seems pretty ill suited for an end game of passing the bill. Not a particularly bright move by the Speaker.

Some co-workers and watched this thing playing out, pooled our pennies, and bought three blue-chips when the market tanked around 1:00. We're already up for the day. This is a good time for bargains. Grab onto the energy stocks!

I was very disappointed in McCain's missed opportunities Friday night. For example, we didn't lose the war in Viet Nam, as McCain stated. We won the fighting; what we lost the public relations campaign, and a Dem Congress cut off funding - which effectively ended the war. Sort of like what the Dems wanted to do with Iraq this year.

When Obama started in on "you said Iraq would be a quick war, that the people would see us as liberators..." McCain should have said "And that's all true. We were in Baghdad in the blink of an eye. We won the war. In hindsight, which is always 20/20, we didn't run the peace that well. But we're new at running a peace where people stay in control of their country; we've never waged war, taken over a country, and not broken the back of that country before (in Japan and Germany, we destroyed their society and built it back in our image). Lesson learned; from now on, we should absolutely crush everybody we invade.

"As for being hailed as liberators - we were, and I have the video to prove it. The ordinary people loved us then and they still love us now. The Kurds love us. Who doesn't love us is the Al-Queda and Madhi elements in the populace. But we're killing them as fast as we can."

So anyway, I concur with everyone here who is praying that McCain can get out there and communicate that this is the fault of FOOs (friends of Obama) and federal regulation won't make it any better. Lifting some federal regulation - such as eliminating cap gains taxes on mortgage backed securities, suspending mark to market accounting rules - will fix the issue. Although I would like to see uptick and no naked short selling come back, since the shorts drove my company's stock price into the dirt.

THE UNKNOWN 20 TRILLION DOLLAR COMPANY
by Flemming Funch
2003-10-30

There is a busy little private company you probably never have heard about, but which you should. Its name is the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation. See their website. Looks pretty boring. Some kind of financial service thing, with a positive slogan and out there to make a little business. You can even get a job there. Now, go and take a look at their annual report. Starts with a nice litte Flash presentation and has a nice message from the CEO. And take a look at the numbers. It turns out that this company holds 23 trillion dollars in assets, and had 917 trillion dollars worth of transactions in 2002. That's trillions, as in thousands of thousands of millions. 23,000,000,000,000 dollars in assets.

As it so turns out, it is not because DTCC has a nice website and says good things about saving their customers money that they are trusted with that kind of resources. Rather it is because they seem to have a monopoly on what they do. In brief, they process the vast majority of all stock transactions in the United States as well as for many other countries. And - and that's the real interesting part - 99% of all stocks in the U.S. appear to be legally owned by them.

In the old days, when you owned stocks you would have the stock certificates lying in your safe. And if you needed to trade them, you needed to get them shipped off to a broker. Nowadays that would be considered very cumbersome, and it would be impractical to invest via computer or over the phone. So the shortcut was invented that the broker would hold your stocks instead of you. And in order for him to legally be able to trade them for you, the stocks were placed under their "street name". I.e. they're in the name of the brokerage, but they're just holding them in trust and trading them for you. And you're in reality the beneficiary rather than the owner. Which is all fine and dandy if everything goes right. Now, it appears the rules were then changed so the brokers are not allowed any longer to put the stocks in their own name. Instead, what they typically do is to put the stocks into the name of "Cede and Company" or "Cede & Co" or some such variation. And the broker might tell you that it is just a fictitious name, and will explain why it is really more practical to do that than to put it in your name.

The problem with that is that it appears that Cede isn't just some dummy name, but an actual corporation that DTCC controls. And, well, if you ask anybody about this, who actually knows about it, they will naturally tell you that it is all a formality. To serve you better, of course. And, well, maybe it is. DTCC seems like a nice and friendly company. It is a private company, owned by the same people (major U.S. banks) who own the Federal Reserve Bank. And if they all stick to their job, and just keep the money and your stocks flowing smoothly, I'm sure that is all well and good. But if somebody at some point should decide otherwise, and there's a national U.S. emergency and/or the U.S. government becomes unable to pay its debts, well, they might just not give you your stocks back. Because legally they own them. Something to think about.

I'm thinking this is a good thing. If we live upon an artificially inflated economy and in artificially inflated living standards, let it drop.

Sure, many will lose their jobs, and my 401k will go poof to fill in the gap where the fake money was, but I say let's drop our living standard then, maybe we were living too good after all. Maybe we couldn't really afford to support people without money after all?

They still need to absorb the bad debts thought and here is my take on why.

The CRA forced banks to make unsound loans.

If I were McCain here is what I would say:

The CRA was a well intended bill but what it has actually done is put people into loans that they simply cannot repay.
My suggestions are as follows:
1. REFORM the CRA guidelines and make them tougher but more fair to the American people. Reinstall the minimum 10% down and 34% house payment ratio.

2. Pass this onerous bill because like it or not, CONGRESS forced the banks into this situation.

(Reminder: This article was written in 2003)
.

Shr_Nfr answered you this morning when you posted this on the dead thread.

The DTC exists to allow folks to trade stocks and not have to go have them transfered on the company's books. If I have a stock certificate and I sell that to you, the certificate must get re-registered with the bank or whatever that is the company's agent for that. Now, let us consider the volume of stock trades on the NYSE, NASD, etc. It would take a large army of people to re-register all those trades every day. To get around this, brokerages deposit the share certificates with the DTC and the get a credit for the number of shares they deposit. The shares get re-registered with DTC. Much like throwing your money in a pot and then getting a slip of paper for the amount you threw in. Unlike a bank, this pot does not have any leaks, the total in it stays the same until somebody wants a stock certificate. When you trade a "DTC eligible" stock what happens is that one party gets its account reduced by the number of shares traded and the other party gets its shares increased by the number of shares traded. Basically a "within the bank" transaction like moving money from account A to account B in the same bank. The company's agent never gets into the loop. When you request a share certificate on stock you own at your brokerage, your broker has to go to DTC and have them go to the company's agent to re-register the stock and issue a certificate. Obviously, this costs a lot more time and money and so most brokerages will charge for it. There are periodic paranoid stories about the "Elders of DTC" being behind all sorts of stuff. Sorry, but they are really out to lunch. The DTC exists so that you as an individual can buy a stock in the morning and then sell it any time you want (in a margin account, otherwise you will have to wait till the trade settles 3 days later, known as Reg-T in the investment industry). It is a highly prosaic company with the sole purpose of making it easy for you and/or your mutual fund to trade stocks and keep the company's transfer agent out of the loop. There is nothing to see. There is no great conspiracy.

I worked in the investment biz for 15 years before I retired. I know what I am saying

Ah. I was not aware of Rush Limbaugh in 1995. I still voted Libertarian in 1996 (because Dole was such a cipher), but I voted for Bush in 2000, mostly because of Gore's connections with the Chinese. These convinced me that not only were the Democrats merely worse than the Republicans, but that they actually harbored cadres of treachery.

Which is certainly true today. ...

I'm wondering what the author believes is the cause of the fannie/freddie meltdown.

I think the point is that the bad loans occurred outside the auspices of the CRA. That is, it was greed rather than an effort to increase home ownership among low-income families that led to the bad lending.

It wasn't the CRA, in other words, that produced condo-flipping as a get-rich-quick method.

Sometimes I think Mac is deliberately triangulating for independent/moderate political benefit, sometimes I think that he is operating in a stubbornly apolitical, idealistic mode, i.e., refusing to compromise his maverick status, even if the prize slips from his grasp.

If it's the former, his lack of clarity on his ideological status is a plus; after all, he has right-wing Palin at his side, moderating worked for Clinton and heaven knows it's the strategy the Obamites are banking on. If it's the latter, however, Mac's stance may be admirable, but is it functional while playing in the congressional junkyard with vicious attack dogs?

Were the condo-flippers the people defaulting on loans?

How many shitty loans would have been made without the fear of people like Obama's former law firm suing and the every present threat of the democrats investigating? I don't know the percentages but I'm sure there are a lot of financial institutions that figured they could get the grievance mongers off their asses. Another question is whether or not fannie and freddie would have imploded if Clinton's HUD had not authorized them to purchase billions in subprime securities and count them towards a "public good" that encouraged affordable housing.

To my mind those individuals should be exposed and ridiculed until even they feel shame and admit that they are not worthy of the trust they have been given; and every honest man involved in the solution should be calling them out by name, initiating and propagating embarrassment upon them at every turn. But, then, maybe every honest man claiming to be part of the solution is already doing that and maybe it sounds like silence.

WHILE subprime loans deeply penetrated low-income and minority groups, a new study suggests that more upper-income borrowers and more whites took out such loans than any other groups.

What about rightie professors? More to the point, what about the professors whose work is in science and engineering? The People's Republic of China did just that and went one better, sending the faculty to reeducation camps, on a salary of 1000 calories bread, plus not quite all the water you can drink.

Now, they're in a slow, painful rebuilding process. Orchards cannot be regrown in a day, and if you want an advanced technical civilization, somebody has to think about the fundamentals.

Donald Knuth {author of the art of computer programming} observes that many people work at staying on top of things. His job, he says, is to try to get to the bottom of things.

re: #72 Mike McDaniel

You are so right! That is what we have to be afraid of. Our economy is sound, and I wish to hell that John McCain had stuck to his guns when he said as much. Our financial sector is in a mess of the Dem's making, but banks are not the economy. That said, if we do not introduce liquidity in to the market in a SANE way, the lack of available lending will tank the economy. Having our government buy up bad debt is NOT sane.

The problem is that our government has imposed stupid rules on asset valuation, thus reducing the appraised value of banking assets. Lower asset values means that banks cannot lend the money that our markets need due to rational rules regarding ratios of assets to borrowing.

The other problem is that our government has sucked up every god-damned nickel that they can squeeze out of our economy and have kept squeezing! Capital gains and corporate taxes should be ELIMINATED! In the real world, corporations do not pay taxes, they collect them from the shareholders and consumers.

But I am trying to speak rationally here, and politics is not rational. The masses of asses would rather blame the big, bad corporations for their woes and take more government largesse for "free." After all, while McCain is promising to cut government, Obambi is promising free health care, free college, free money and a pony. How the fuck is McCain supposed to compete with that?

Trick or Treat.

165 economists sent the following letter to Congress on Wed Sept 24 2008 regarding the Treasury plan as outlined on that date. It does not reflect all signatories' views on subesquent plans or modifications of the bill:

To the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate:

As economists, we want to express to Congress our great concern for the plan proposed by Treasury Secretary Paulson to deal with the financial crisis. We are well aware of the difficulty of the current financial situation and we agree with the need for bold action to ensure that the financial system continues to function. We see three fatal pitfalls in the currently proposed plan:

1) Its fairness. The plan is a subsidy to investors at taxpayers’ expense. Investors who took risks to earn profits must also bear the losses. Not every business failure carries systemic risk. The government can ensure a well-functioning financial industry, able to make new loans to creditworthy borrowers, without bailing out particular investors and institutions whose choices proved unwise.

2) Its ambiguity. Neither the mission of the new agency nor its oversight are clear. If taxpayers are to buy illiquid and opaque assets from troubled sellers, the terms, occasions, and methods of such purchases must be crystal clear ahead of time and carefully monitored afterwards.

3) Its long-term effects. If the plan is enacted, its effects will be with us for a generation. For all their recent troubles, America's dynamic and innovative private capital markets have brought the nation unparalleled prosperity. Fundamentally weakening those markets in order to calm short-run disruptions is desperately short-sighted.

For these reasons we ask Congress not to rush, to hold appropriate hearings, and to carefully consider the right course of action, and to wisely determine the future of the financial industry and the U.S. economy for years to come.

Signed (updated at 9/27/2008 6:00PM CT)

Alvarez Fernando (University of Chicago)

--etc, etc. down through "Z" in the alphabet. 165 names total.

--Doesn't it make sense to query this expertise of a broad representation of true experts in the economic field, on how to handle this crunch per what we the people really need and want?

Why should we trust foxes (Paulson, Bernanke etc.) to build -- and guard -- our henhouse with their own proprietary 'tools', when we have dedicated economists who want to transparently do it right?

Paulson's personal net worth is reputed to be over $700,000,000. What would be so wrong with him pulling together 1,000 of his rich pals and having THEM collectively bail out the bilge of their own boat, instead of helping them to pump their bilgewater over into our children's boat? Where's their ethical sense of patriotic fairness, decency, and gratitude to this system that made them so rich?

As others have said it is confidence that is key. Homeowners that got jacked with 5/1, 4 way arms need to made confident in their mortgage and their ability to pay. Some of the high roller salary perks need to be recalled. As an average consumer it is certainly nice to see all these CEO's screw these companies up as part of their expertise and then walk away rich. We need a special law for them short of tar and feathering them. It does nothing for my confidence in the government or in the financial markets to let a single one of them walk away scot free.

These local mortgage companies and escrow agencies that cooked books need to be dissolved and the perps tatooed.

The average homeowner wanting to buy a house for the first time is essentially at the mercy of the brokers terms. There is little they can do to benefit themselves in negotiations that doesn't cost more money then they have. Everything is going into the downpayment.

Michelle Malkin is on the wrong approach. She sees the ship sinking and wants no holes plugged but doesn't realize she is standing on the deck.

It's essentially irrelevant who exploited the faulty regulations to their benefit the most. The majority of the blame isn't being laid at the feet of the people who couldn't pay back their loans, but the people that provided them in the first place to people who did not deserve them. It shouldn't be any surprise that the people who benefitted the most from the scheme were economically savvy, upper middle class folks, and not the abjectly poor. It's also still more about who didn't pay back the loans, not who took them out in the first place.

Only about half the bad loans were CRA backed. Half is still a lot. Regardless, according to an acquaintance who worked in the loan department of a non-CRA bank, she was still hounded by organizations saying that the banks 'discriminatory' lending practices were being put under government scrutiny. They were essentially told to issue more bad loans.

A possible compromise? (If the Republican leadership still has any balls, that is) Don't think this has been proposed by anybody, it's just what I would hope somebody on "our" side would have the cahoneys to get in front of the cameras and put forth, and really stick it to the Dems.

1. grant some immediate relief to the mortgage companies...say 75 billion or so, to just stem the tide, with the assumption the next Congress, if needed, can debate on giving more, but ONLY if these next conditions are met...

2. the immediate granting of exploratory rights to the American oil companies to previously prohibited areas of the continental United States, it's immediate coastline, and Alaska. If we are going to put more inflationary pressure on oil prices, we'd better have the option of increasing domestic supply

3. in addition to 2, the promise the next Congress first priority be on energy policy, including full and open debate for a week (just my own arbitrary timeline, by the way) on the merits of increasing domestic oil supply

4. immediate Congressional hearings on the CAUSE of this current fiscal mess, from both the principles inside the corporations and agencies involved, AS WELL as putting certain members of Congress who have SEEMED TO RUN INTERFERENCE for those entities to explain their actions...to whit, it is time to put people like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd in FRONT of the committees, instead of being members of them. To get to the bottom of this, these hearings should take place through ALL of October, and finally...

5. the immediate cancellation of ALL federal funds to the renegade organization ACORN, whose main occupation seems to be engineering VOTING FRAUD all across this country.

If these conditions are met (and have this said with a BIG smile), we can start taking the steps to resolve the most critical elements of this crisis. This is the Republican plan, we just need Democratic support to make it happen.

Then stand back and let Hell break loose

I think this would be a great idea, but somehow I doubt anybody would have the courage to do it. Our current political leadership reminds me of a Joseph Wambaugh line: "real men have b*lls that clang when they walk...our leaders have b*lls that chime". So this is probably just alcoholic wishful thinking

The republican's have it in the bag and if they drop it we're done. Pelosi made an ass out of her self today. She doesn't know the difference between a punch boil and a toliet. McCain needs to take advantage of it and get the republican's idea's added to that friggin bill. Eliminate the capital gains tax and give us a friggin break, because we did nothing to cause this shit and why should we pay! Make the CEO's pay the money back and put their asses in jail. All it would take is an audit, unless that is useless now that so much time has passed and they have shredded the evidence. The Dems are a disaster. This started when Clinton allowed investments and mortgages to coexist in a bundled package. The people running this shit then opened the gates to the masses and gave balloon mortgages to low income families, at the same time selling the bundles under the table to China and then giving the money back to the Dem's in campaign contributions. The people the dem's propose to help are the one's who are out of homes and we are all feeling that heat in our 401K plans!

Barrack Obama profited from this deal and he is keeping as far away from it as possible and slinging mud over the fence. Just like Pelosi today it is all about me to these people.

the only problem is McCain is forever wanting to reach out across the aisle, he will probably not allow it. but the time for reaching out is over. this is trench warfare now. all ahead flank.

I am sorry from what I have seen of Palin she is embarassingly stupid.

Managed to clean up entrenched corruption, reduce spending and lower taxes. (Not to mention live a real life.) The characters I care about are not the ability to win some BS media quiz show pretending to be an interview.

From what I have seen of you, you are easily manipulated by a corrupt and biased media.

PS: What has Obama ever accomplished?

Her record as a governor is abstract to the public she will and is being judged by her media disasters. I hope that she does well against Biden the mouth but fear she will be shredded. One more Couric style disaster and she is toast.

You seem to be very impressed by the media. But most Americans are catching on [zogby poll]. How do you explain the hugh crowds and enthusiasm whenever she has a public appearance?

She is a beautiful woman who could possibly be the POTUS... it doesn't get more exciting than that.

You have made the classic mistake of underestimating the American people. We will surprise you.

Sarah is everything Obama ain't.

Evidence: Never in history have cross-party attacks been as vile and puerile as the attacks on Sarah and her family. Her potential political power can be measured as it is directly proportional to the number and kinds of attacks against her by the Liberals. I doubt that Sarah has ever voted 'Present' even once.

What else do we see in todays news? Obama Truth Squads are spreading out across America to bring the force of law to prevent free speech. What else do we see? Essentially, Obama taking the 'Present' position on the Bailout Bill. This guy has balls! In the face of a national crisis he can stand up and tell America that he feels their pain and that there will be a tomorrow!

The House Republicans stood against the Bill. They put the fear of God into enough Democrats that they too bailed out on the BailOut Bill.

To paraphrase: If it were not for the House Republicans, there would be no Republicans at all. Thank God for the House Republicans! Can I have an Amen!
