Yaar, Happy New years! Charles, we are all brothers in arms here!

5 Amy  Mon, Sep 29, 2008 6:59:29pm

Thanks, Charles!

Actually, Rosh Hashanah literally means "head of the year." It's the New Year, and not a day of remembrance.
Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement.

6 freedombilly  Mon, Sep 29, 2008 6:59:38pm

And may we never forget Israel's simple right to exist. Complicated for some but not for the rest of us.

Works for me - but I am probably not a great authority on this - I have not been very good at adhering to the tenets of Judaism and I do not know nearly as much as I should. I started going to Temple with AH (who is much, much better), and I understand its important for my children. It hit me again at my nephews Bris last week - yet you see where I am tonight.

I was looking at campaign promises made by a candidate:

"We will crack down on mortgage professionals found guilty of fraud by increasing and creating new criminal penalties" 7/18/07 Washington

"I'll close the loophole that allows investors with multiple homes to renegotiate their mortgage in bankruptcy court, but not victims of predatory lending." 2/13/08 Janesville, Wis

"Obama will create a fund to help people refinance their mortgages and provide comprehensive support to innocent homeowners." Blueprint for Change

"When I am President, the first part of my plan to combat urban poverty will be to replicate the Harlem Childrens Zone in 20 cities across the country." 7/18/07, Washington DC

"As President, I'll create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund that would add as many as 112,000 new affordable units in mixed-income neighborhoods" 7/18/07 Washington DC

"I will also appoint a new Director of Urban Policy, who will cut though the disorganized bureaucracy that currently exists and report directly to me on how these efforts are going." 7/18/07, Washington DC

And the best for last:

Not pardon real estate developer Tony Rezko. Attributed to Obama spokesman Ben Labolt 6/5/08 Sun-Times. No wonder Rezko is talking his head off. ;-)>

Rosh HaShanna here in the US it's not as much fun. In Israel its like Christmas, shopping, dinners and parties, decorations, everyone is excited.

In my Russian class earlier this summer, we said in Russian what our favorite holiday was. The instructor asked me about Christmas. I said it was OK, but really just another day, and in fact, kind of a bad day since every thing shuts down. I had to admit, that is not the right phrase, that I was Jewish. Something I am pretty private about for obvious reasons. She looked at me like I was some kind of freak from that point on. She is a Kazakh and made it clear that the greatest insult in Russian culture is to call someone a Jew. I did Borat impressions the rest of the class. She hates Borat.

Some of you might remember my girlfriend died back in March and suicide was the probable cause, well after 6 months we finally got the autopsy report from the State of Tenn. M.E....yes this length of time is actually short, can take up to a year... she died of a massive heart attack and must have knocked a bottle of pills over while in distress making it look like she had taken her life. Her toxocology was clean as well as no alcohol present or any other substance. She was bi-polar and with the pills on the floor it sure looked bad...never assume anything, coincidence can lead to all sorts of conclusions.I was for 6 months a suicide survivor, and my heart will forever more go out to all who are,I cannot explain the hell in words...heart disease is not gender specific, she would talk of all the males in her family dying in their 40`s,her dad,grandfather,2 uncles and a lot of others...little did we know, she was 44 and looked and acted in perfect health and died of the exact same type of heart disease...sorry for the OT but wanted to set the record straight!

If he didn't have such a great sense of humor, would he have made liberals? I mean, look at their events. Huge puppets, little puppets, drummers, people in orange suits, people in costumes, people on stilts, horrible pink costumes, inflated scrotums, and hags with breasts hanging down past their waists, etc...

As extremely unpopular as this must sound, it must be said. Rosh Hashanah is not an American holiday. Congress should be at work fixing the banking crisis.

76 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Mon, Sep 29, 2008 7:34:56pm

The reply/quote thingies are not working for me.

So, Reply to Silhouette's #65

She (I am almost certain Silhouette is a she) said;

"Clearly, Lending Tree thought the bill would pass, and was already using that to sooth new customers into getting a new mortgage."

Which is part an parcel the main reason I was against this whole deal. Give us five years, we'd be five times as deep.

This (for a conservative) defines the word dilemma, and gives another definition to "cognitive dissonance".

Michael the Archangel, in my own "faith tradition" he is the warrior prince, protector of the Jewish people.

Now that you mention it--it does give me hope! Real hope, not the slogan. Reminds me that one of the best things McCain has said in the campaign, IMHO, "Nothing is inevitable!" Our choices matter. Wow, I better watch Lord of the Rings. I'm getting sentimental...

Lots of "uhs," too. It'll be a delightful 4 years living through the Messiah's stuttering while the MSM keeps tellig us how wonderfully articulate he is.

Name of my daughter's school - St. Michael the Archangel.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss...May she Rest In Peace and give you peace as well now.

35 days until the election. The following is the remaining debate schedule:

October 2, 2008: (Tickets) Vice Presidential debate, Washington University, St. Louis, MO

October 7, 2008: (Tickets) Presidential debate in a town hall format, Belmont University, Nashville, TN - Submit a Question

October 15, 2008: (Tickets) Presidential debate with domestic policy focus, Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY

McCain and Sarah have to do MUCH better to offset the financial crisis. Obambi has opened a 6 to 8 percent lead depending on the poll; even factoring in oversampling of demonrats, that's a healthy lead. Time for the gloves to come off. I believe that if both Sarah and McCain go for the jugular they can fluster Slow Joe and Obambi and gain some traction in key states. But my BP is going to be elevated for the next 35 days.

Full disclsure: not Jewish.

My understanding is that The Name (the one that begins with a Y) should not be in any form where it can be destroyed. Observant Jews don't put it out on the Internet. Many have extended that to the word God.

Interestingly enough, Pope Benedict recently put in place some rules to increase our (Catholics') reverence for The Name. We're not going to be singing it in songs anymore, among other things. I hope that does something to aid Christian-Jewish friendship.

I'm sorry, but aren't those two different kinds of money? One is investor funds, and one is taxpayer funds?

I was reluctantly accepting of the bailout bill, as many were. But even if they had passed the bill, the two groups of funds are still fundamentally different, aren't they?

The "fed funds" would buy up securities and that might make the market happy for a while, but nothing would have fundamentally changed in the rules. Why can't a real change be made in how these securities are traded? Can't that happen in addition to some sort of "buy-out/bailout"?

I presume those who were getting close to retirement got into conservative investments. When the economy comes back, I'm going to have a shitload of shares in my retirement to go up.

But they come from different sources - your tax dollars would be used to replace funds in ways that would "bail out" the mistakes of others, who may or may not be "tax payers" or "investors", all because of bad loans they either took out or granted to those who couldn't afford them.

Am I being too "dichotomous" here?

You're going to pay either way.

re: #99 jwb7605

Since this thread is in honor of those of the Jewish persuasion -- can I ask a really stupid question?

Why is it spelled G-d?

That doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not trying to offend anybody.

Although I am not Jewish, I can answer this question.

The root of this practice is found in the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

In deference to this command, the Name God gave for Himself to Moses (c. 1250BCE), spelled Yod, He, Vav, He when spoken was replaced with the title Adonai "Lord" to avoid accidentally misusing His name. This Name is sometimes called the Tetragrammaton ("the Four Letters") or HaShem ("the Name") rather than actually saying the Name. Over time, other references to God began to be treated with a similar respect so that words like God are not written in a pronounceable form: G-d.

In an similar way, in old handwritten Christian Bibles abbreviations were frowned upon except for abbreviations having to do with God, His titles, holy prophets and patriarchs and other holy people and angels. While regular medieval texts abbreviated everywhere, the usual practice for Bibles was that ordinary words were spelled out fully and only the most important words were abbreviated.

I have read elsewhere that Rezko is making a deal to talk before sentencing. This will come about before the election, so if he has any dirt on Obama, he will spill it in order to get a lighter sentence.
The dollar amount that Rezko raised, the 1/4 million is incorrect. It is around 160k.
The tie to the Iraqi business man is also correct.
Here is a link to the Chicago Tribune with the headline:

Attorneys tell AP that Ill. political fixer Rezko visits courthouse; they believe he's talking

snip:

Rezko, 53, a one-time millionaire real estate developer and fast-food entrepreneur, raised funds for many Illinois politicians — more than $1 million for Blagojevich. And in return he became one of the governor's key advisers.
He also raised money for Obama's Illinois campaigns but not for his presidential bid. Obama has donated $159,000 in Rezko-related contributions to charity.

Interesting article.

re: #161 Wishing

Hey 3 wood! Glad you made it! I am interested in hearing your thoughts regarding, WHAT NOW?, what with The Deal falling through. You may have stated that earlier today and i missed it.

Well this morning I predicted the market dropping at least 300 points and got called a twit among other things for saying that.

My thoughts:

I did not like the bill all that much either but it was better than nothing in my view. But, the reality is the plan got voted down and we then lost (by that I mean everybody out there owning stock) over a trillion dollars in capital out of the market today. I think we will loose another trillion or so tomorrow. Multiply that by a factor of ten and you start to get a feel for the economic damage this screwing around is doing.

Those lost trillions would have paid for the plan, bad as it was, several times over. GM is out of credit now. Other businesses are running out of credit. The damage to the economy is adding up.

Never the less, there are several things that can be done tomorrow without Congress. I just heard Gingrich a little while ago, and it was very similar to some of what I've been saying.

1. The SEC needs to waive the mark to market rule tomorrow morning before the markets open, That would create several hundred billion in liquidity instantly.

2. The SEC needs to reinstate the "uptick" rule on short sales.

3. The Treasury needs to get the FDIC to raise the insurance on deposits up to at least $1 million per. $2 million would be better. That would help stop the cash drain from the banks.

4. They need to start drafting an insurance plan (won't work but will at least get passed) and drop the buy out plan (would have worked but will never pass).

5. Look for the Fed to do a half point discount rate drop, the market has already priced it in.

The Asian markets are melting down tonight last I saw, down another 6% to 7% and counting, look for another severe drop on Wall Street tomorrow.

I think unemployment will get to 10%.

I think several hundred banks will fold.

Well, what is for sure is that we will not see another bill on the table to be considered until Wednesday, when the Senate comes back. So the congress-folk have a couple of days to prove to us they can do the job we elected them to do.

And the markets will fly all over the place, I'm sure.

Given the fact that housing prices inflated so grotesquely for the past number of years and bottomed out in the past year, the DOW might do so as well.

What might be considered is that the Fed and Treasury would go into something like an "appropriations bill" mode - offering only the minimum amounts necessary in order to keep the credit market flowing. But pin-pointed for the business lending industry, in order to keep businesses going.

Just until a better bill can be passed.

It is followed by a thing on the nature of the 10 commandments (which I'm watching now), and how our understanding of them have changed. Close, very close, but no cigar. Yod, He, Vav, He, is an acronym representing "I Am That I Am", not a name, but rather a statement of fact. In that context G-d (whose many names are unknown to us), is most properly referred to as, "That Which Is."

As we (Jews) neither speak, nor write the name of G-d in Hebrew, so too do we extend this custom into the English language, although it is essentially meaningless to do so.

BTW, I have it on very good authority that one of the many names of G-d is Hershel, but don't tell anybody that I told you.

Hey 3 wood: I'm curious if you've ever read The Way the World Works by the late Jude Wanniski and, if so, what you generally think about it. Like most people here, I'm only a "layman" when it comes to economics, but it seems to me that his model (really a re-statement of Classical Economics) is the only one available that actually offers an explanation for the Great Depression. (I saw your post this morning where you said that your graduate studies were on that topic.)

In many ways, his description (pp. 137-152) of the Senate discussion on the Smoot-Hawley tariff from Jan. 1929 up to Black Tuesday (when it was finally clear that a tariff deal would be done [and would include both agriculture and industrial tariffs]) reminds me the current situation, with the market up and down on the likelihood of the deal. However, of course, at that time the market was hoping that a deal on the tariff would not be struck, and today the market is hoping that a deal will be struck to solve the credit crunch.

But what does he really have to offer in this thing? Nothing, because all he knows is how to be a good candidate, nothing of how to be a true leader.

He ran in the primaries as a true liberal, and now he's running to the center so he can get elected. He knows nothing of life in the center, so he's winging it.

One can only lead when one is inside one's strength zone. The "One" here is out of his league, so he needs Pelosi et al to carry his water in this. He pontificates about the issue, but his words only come from what his advisers tell him "sounds good".

I'm really looking forward to the next debate in Nashville, which is town hall style. Regardless of the topic, he'll uhm, uhm, oh, uhm, er his way through it, and make John McCain look good.

Smoot Hawley had a contributing factor true, but it was a large combination of things.

Commodity prices shot up during WWI so farmers went into debt and bought a lot of property (sound familiar). Then prices dropped and a lot of the farmers went bankrupt.

People bought a lot of investments they did not understand in the 20's (sound familiar) and then when the market dumped out they lost their shirts.

The Fed's stood by and did noting a let the money supply contract by about 30%. Banks credit froze up (sound familiar) and President Hoover raise taxes killing off any income growth there may have been.

I see a lot of similarities to today.

What might be considered is that the Fed and Treasury would go into something like an "appropriations bill" mode - offering only the minimum amounts necessary in order to keep the credit market flowing.

That's not what's need here. They need to smash down the credit freeze door with the most massive money maul anyone's ever seen, smoke all the toxic mortgage derivatives in the room, rescue all the market confidence, and declare to the world, we're good.

The 700 billion bail out is a drop in the bucket to the capital that is vanishing form the system. This is want is frustrating me so much.

The greater point is being missed here, I think, cause there is so much resentment toward Wall Street in general.

We are losing trillions in capital every day to save 700 billion from helping out Wall Street.

Only with oney you can tie up for at least 5 years.

We have to understand, we are badly damaging our economy with this screwing around. There is no switch to throw and make it all go away.

It's like running a car with no oil in the engine.

After this melt down is over I think it will take 3 to 5 years to grow our way out of this.

Most of the rest of the world thinks we have lost our minds and are becoming very leery of putting money in our markets now. This is fundamentally changing how the financial markets work and how foreign investment will deal with us.

We spit the bit and they are taking their cash and walking.

there was enormous amount of intermarriage, that can be tracked genetically

Research in the late 20th century demonstrated that Tay-Sachs disease is caused by a genetic mutation on the HEXA gene on chromosome 15. A large number of HEXA mutations have been discovered, and new ones are still being reported. These mutations reach significant frequencies in several populations. French Canadians of southeastern Quebec have a carrier frequency similar to Ashkenazi Jews, but they carry a different mutation. Many Cajuns of southern Louisiana carry the same mutation that is most common in Ashkenazi Jews. Most HEXA mutations are rare, and do not occur in genetically isolated populations. The disease can potentially occur from the inheritance of two unrelated mutations in the HEXA gene, one from each parent.[3]

Whoa! Now that's interesting . . .

re: #200 David IV of Georgia

Interstingly, that 2 hour program on History Channel International tonight about the nature of the Ten Commandments... they explained that the commandment about not taking the Lord's name in vain actually came from a tradition back then that names of gods and of God had power. You would invoke the name of a supernatural being, and particularly of God, as an oath. That is, you were making a binding statement. As in, "I swear by God that this is true. If it is not true, let God strike me dead!" And also, some kinds of supernatural beings, by invoking their name, you were ordering that being around, you were telling that being what you wanted him/her/it to do, and God was saying, by this commandment about taking His name in vain, "No, you are NOT to go ordering ME around. I created YOU. I tell YOU what to do. Never forget that!"

Somewhere along the line, that commandment about not taking the Lord's name in vain lost its meaning, and came to be wrongly associated with foul language and stuff. That was NEVER the intent.

Sure, it all revolves around the concept of credit, loans, and what is called the Multiplier Effect.

When you deposit a dollar in a bank (I'm going to use very round numbers here) the bank keeps 10 cents in reserve and loans out the other 90 cents. That 90 cents then ends up in some other bank account somewhere and the process is repeated over and over again. In general terms, for every dollar of new deposits, a bank can loan out $10 dollars (thus expanding the economy)

Well, when money (capital) dries up and is taken out of the system (bank, wall street, wherever) you also contract by a factor of about 10 times too.

So take the loss on value to the market over the last few days, multiply it by 10, and see what you got.

That is real damage to the economy.

And it dwarfs the 700 billion.

We would have paid for this many times over if we had fixed this damn thing over the weekend.

I've always found it odd that the very thing that most distinguishes use from the other primates, perhaps the very thing which drove our evolution to what we are, the use of tools, is not taught to the best and brightest of our children in our educational system.

In high school, I was one of the "A Track" students destined for college, and therefore denied the opportunity to learn the use of tools. Only the "dummies" took shop courses after the 8th grade, so there they were, learning how to tear an engine apart, while I was learning how to diagram a sentence. Never made any sense to me. If I hadn't gotten a job at a gas station while in college, I'd have never learned a wrench from a jigsaw. I'm sure that it's still like that.

She'll be glad she did this, and be all the better for it. It's a very good thing to know how things work, and acquire an appreciation of Man's spark of divine light. Good for her!

Gotta catch some Z's. Catch ya down the road.

Coincidentally, and perhaps inspirationally, it's also St. Michael's and All Angels Day. Somehow the overlap of these two observances strengthens my optimism and determination for the days ahead.

A little more info about the medieval holy day that known as Michaelmas.

Apparently it was primarily observed by Christians in the British Isles, but not so much in mainland Europe. From this, and the fact that it occurs a week after the fall equinox, I would deduce that it originated as a Christianized replacement for some pagan autumnal festival indigenous to the British Isles -- possibly involving naked Druid chicks and the ritual burning of Nicholas Cage.

re: #305 BaseballMom57

Mazeltov! (I'm not sure I spelled that correctly, not being Jewish and all!)

It's really two words -- mazel means "luck" or "fortune" and tov means "good." In Hebrew, the two vowel letters in mazel are considered to be "short" -- hence, they're usually not written -- but the long "o" in tov IS always written. And written Hebrew goes right-to-left, so it looks like:

vot lzm

Or, to use the actual Hebrew letters:

מזל טוב

This is just by way of saying that the Latinized spelling can vary a bit -- mazal and mazel are equally "correct."

As far as how to say it, in English we use a more "Yiddishized" pronunciation -- rhyming mazal with "nozzle" and giving tov the same "o" sound as in "coffee," and thus:

"MAW-zuhl TAWV"

But in Israeli Hebrew, mazal is stressed on the second syllable, and tov has the long "o" as in "Rome." So it's pronounced:

"muh-ZALL TOHV"

Unless, of course, you happen to be one of the many Israelis who habitually use the Yiddish pronunciations for certain traditional phrases -- to the annoyance of other Israelis, who find Yiddishized Hebrew to be grating on the ear.

P.S. I'm not Jewish -- I'm just going by what I've been told by native speakers of Israeli Hebrew!

312 Throbert McGee  Tue, Sep 30, 2008 7:28:10am

Following up on #311: From more Googling, I find that mazal originally came from mazzaztu, which meant "arrangement of stars" (i.e., "constellation") in Akkadian, an ancient linguistic cousin of Hebrew.

Thus, the word formerly had astrological significance, and the intermediate sense between Akkadian "constellation" and Hebrew "luck" would've been something like "auspicious sign in the heavens."

re: #62 kevinmumaw

In my Russian class earlier this summer, we said in Russian what our favorite holiday was. The instructor asked me about Christmas. I said it was OK, but really just another day [since] I was Jewish. [...] She looked at me like I was some kind of freak from that point on.

There's another issue that could've been going on with your teacher: In traditional Russian culture, "Santa Claus" and decorated fir trees and gifts for the kids and big family dinners at whatnot were associated with New Year's (Novyï god), and not with Christmas (Rozhdestvo), since Tsarist times -- i.e., since long before official Soviet atheism was a factor.

Rozhdestvo -- which literally translates "Nativity" -- is strictly a solemn holy day of the Russian Orthodox Church, and the very faithful observe it (in early January, not Dec. 25) by going to church for a Mass approximately eleventeen times as long and boring as a standard Eastern Orthodox service.

Thus, there was no reason whatsoever for Russian Jews and other non-Christians to avoid "Santa" and decorated trees, etc., since all these things have always been part of an entirely secular New Year holiday. So this may have been part of the reason that your teacher thought you were weird to not celebrate the American Christmas -- possibly she didn't understand that the secular holiday and the religious holiday are not as readily separable here.

Or, then again, your teacher may have just been a classic Jew-hater...

She is a Kazakh and made it clear that the greatest insult in Russian culture is to call someone a Jew.

The great 20th-century poet Marina Tsvetaeva had an unforgettably pithy quote on the pervasiveness of Russian anti-Semitism:

"Some people pronounce the word yevrei [Jew] exactly as though they had to mentally translate it from zhid [k*ke]!"

(In the original, for those who know some Russian: Vy slovo "evreï" proiznosite tak, tochno perevodite ego c "zhid".)

Which is to suggest that even when Russians are outwardly polite to Jews, one suspects that inwardly they are looking for horns.
