Biden.... I have a history in the US Senate.... Of running off at the mouth for hours on end and not saying a damned thing...

2 Sharmuta  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:16:35pm

She's killing them with charm.

3 Occasional Reader  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:16:48pm

Smooth answer on the Constitutional VP role question. Good.

4 Killian Bundy  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:16:51pm

Biden has a history of getting things done in the Senate.

/gee, I wonder if Obama can name them

5 arethusa  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:17:16pm

OK, Joe...please stop smirking. Worse than O's interrupting.

6 LockeOn  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:17:24pm

Go Palin Go!

7 Sharmuta  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:17:52pm

Senator Puffy Eyes- the Executive Branch is outlined in Article II of the Constitution, not Article I.

8 She-ra  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:17:53pm

what is wrong with Biden? where should we start? He wants to be co-president?

9 Jim in Virginia  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:17:57pm

No, Joe, Henry Wallace was the most dangerous VP in US history.

You betcha.

re: #2 Sharmuta

Day and night from the shrew-ness Hillary is known for. Very refreshing.

12 Dar ul Harb  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:18:24pm

Biden's running against Cheney.

13 Sunlight  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:18:28pm

Gwenn Ifill lost all credibility when she called Governor Palin "dear" at the beginning. I used to like her on the MacNeill Lehrer Newshour, but she has lost her dignity in this. And Senator Biden is fantastically patronizing making faces, laughing at Governor Palin in alternation with seemingly trying to flirt with her. Nauseating to watch. Governor Palin is doing great.

14 arethusa  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:18:35pm

It was Ifill who said the V-P was legislative, not Palin!

15 ArmyWife  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:18:40pm

Biden looks angry - he just called Cheney dangerous. Cheney could mop the floor with the lot of them.

16 Slumbering Behemoth  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:18:49pm

Cheney: Most Dangerous VP EVAH!

17 ciaospirit  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:18:54pm

Biden is so much of the same. Exactly what Obama says they're not.

18 spidly  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:18:55pm

thanks to tina fey and the rest of the hollywood leftards painting her as a bimbo, I don't see how this can be even painted as a draw. she made a liar of them all

19 rw in san diego  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:19:01pm

What a stupid question, Gwen.

20 ciaospirit  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:19:21pm

23 Intrepid  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:19:52pm

This.Is.Sarah.Palin.

24 arethusa  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:19:57pm

Yeah, Reagan!

25 politicalinsomniac  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:20:11pm

I wish she could figure out a way to work Bill Ayers into the discussion. So much better if she brings it up than for McCain to MAYBE bring it up later in another debate.

If not now, when? I don't really see McCain going down that road next week or in the last debate.

26 MandyManners  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:20:21pm

Or Aaron Burr?

28 Dar ul Harb  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:20:31pm

Ifill's question is on what their weaknesses are.

Palin dodges it by challenging Ifill's statement that she "lacks experience," wonder what Biden's answer about his "lack of discipline."

29 She-ra  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:20:47pm

I like that Palin mentioned American Exceptionalism. Very important. "City on a Hill".

30 gooddad  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:20:51pm

41 Kosh's Shadow  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:21:56pm

Worst flaw in Biden? What, he didn't mention is tendency to run at the mouth, to talk too much, to use many words when few would do, to ....
Or his tendency to plagiarize?

42 Slumbering Behemoth  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:22:00pm

re: #21 devil in baggy pants

Funny (+1), but I'd rather go hunting with Cheney everyday for the rest of my life (especially if he buys the beer and ammo) than have Biden in the VP seat.

43 bryantay  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:22:02pm

I like that Palin mentioned American Exceptionalism. Very important. "City on a Hill".

Obama thinks we're fourth world, while Palin and the vast majority of this great nation still believes in our exceptionalism. Amen.

47 Dar ul Harb  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:22:11pm

Biden's sentiment caught up to him. He's 'bout to cry.

Poor guy.

54 Sharmuta  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:23:03pm

re: #52 spidly

did he tell that lie again just now?

What's the real story?

77 Sunlight  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:25:27pm

Back at the beginning, when Ms. Ifill asked who caused the current situation, Governor Palin *still* didn't say anything about Pres. Clinton's people moving into Fannie Freddie, and the disasters caused by insider corruption and patronage. I know about corruption and patronage because of where I live. Israel is having a conniption fit over a level of corruption that wouldn't even be detectible where I live (good for them!). We're watching a train robbery in progress, including with the sudden "meltdown" and bailout/rescue.

78 ciaospirit  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:25:36pm

It didn't take me long. It took me five years. WTF?

79 FloridaAnole  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:25:49pm

80 David IV of Georgia  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:25:59pm

He like clean coal because Scranton, the Northern neighbor of Delaware, is sitting on one of the largest beds of unprofitable clean coal in the world.

81 arethusa  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:25:59pm

Bork might have overturned Dred Scott

88 snowcrash  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:26:25pm

Democrats emotions are very close to the surface. . they can cry at any time.

89 Palandine  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:26:31pm

Biden's change of heart? Deciding to judge an SC justice on ideology, rather than on qualifications, as he'd originally done.

That's not a good change, Senator. It's disturbing that you don't see that.

90 Intrepid  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:27:08pm

Gwen just let Joe run over her (or she's giving him more time).

She had better give Sarah the same time.

Joe is absolutely swinging wild and looking even wilder in his eyes.

Five minutes left. Come on Sarah, re-load, aim and fire!

91 pink freud  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:27:18pm

92 Killian Bundy  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:27:19pm

What will get talked about is the spank O'Reilly put on Barney Frank.

"No Bill, he's only gonna like that!"

269 Wishing  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:48:01pm

He started debating when she was 2 yrs old...I feel sorry for the old guy lolol

270 Archimedes  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:48:04pm

Love the Shoeless Joe Jackson reference: Say it ain't so, Joe. Very American!

271 godfrey  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:50:53pm

Glenn has some good links on the debate.

Sully's probably stroking his Liza Minelli doll and sobbing into his mattress.

272 chukardog  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:50:57pm

get ready for a VERY nice Palin poll surge. this race is far from over. If McCain takes the gloves off on Obama in the next two debates Obama is done.

273 gooddad  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:51:15pm

Was the Katie Couric interviews 'Rope-a dope'?

re: #267 RedinLA

Well it's CNN. Are you really surprised?

275 Biff  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:52:01pm

Who in the McCain campaign decided to defang Sarah? She should have ripped Obama constantly. The biggest tragedy would be Obama being elected period. She just backed off and went for the folksy mom vote. She needed to go for the throat, not the heart. The only thing for the GOP is for McCain to rip Obama a new one in the next two debates. I don't think he has it in him.

276 godfrey  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:52:25pm

McCain needs to bring out the steel.

277 Rose Parade  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:53:12pm

I couldn't bring myself to watch it because I was so sure the so-called moderator was going to be a jackass. Glad to hear Sarah field-dressed Biden.

I just love how Palin takes so much abuse from the MSM and everyone keeps counting her out and then she gets on stage and belts it out of the park. The woman is just amazing.

Quick Vote on CNN
Who fared better in the vice presidential debate?
Sen. Joe Biden 76% 2088
Gov. Sarah Palin 22% 601
Neither 2% 66
Total Votes: 2755

wtf?

Now that Ron Paul isn't in the list, the crazy people have to do something with their time.

279 right_on_target  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:54:15pm

Biden has a problem, an emotional problem. It seems that he has yet come to closure regarding his wife's and daughter's death in the auto accident years ago. It must be eating him up if it affects him during a debate. How would it affect him in his future duties?

As a parent who has lost a son I know it is hard but I am at the point where I can talk about losing my son without choking up. It takes time, but 30 years is a bit much. Biden needs counseling help.

Palin did very well, I wish it were longer or have another.

280 nightintheruts  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:54:19pm

I just want to thank Charles and all of you for being here/there through this shit - it makes me feel better to know there are many many more out in this country that still care about what makes it great.

Huzzah! to Sarah. She rocked it for a newbie.

now to deal with the zombies who are looking to bite her in the media.

281 pittrader1988  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:54:23pm

I was spotty at watching it, but I think that Biden did what he needed to do.
He tells so many half truths that you don't know where to start at attacking.

Here are some things I wanted to hear but didn't:

Barack stopped Fannie and Freddie reform, along with the Dems
barack is the second leading receiver of campaign cash from Fannie and Fred
barack's advisors used to be CEO's of fannie and fred

A missed opportunity.

She is charming, but repeats words too often. I don't get the feeling that she knows the details of what she is talking about; but unlike the other side, I do believe that she has principles and adheres to them. I think she has a compass that guides her.

Is she too "next door" like for most people to vote for her?

The moderator sucked. No other word for it, sorry. Chick ought to never be allowed to do a debate again.

282 godfrey  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 7:55:24pm

Biff, my only thought is that the McCain team is waiting to spring McCain on Obama. Palin is out there to secure the people who aren't looking for the strong attacks. That isn't reassuring, especially if McCain doesn't step up and start working him over.

re: #275 Biff

That is essentially what the Republican spokesperson on ABC said. I just switched there, as I figured they would be discussing it. She felt that she missed connecting with those who were still not sure, while she spoke instead to those who were already her base.

To hear that from a Republican was a bit unnerving. I imagine the polls in the next few days will let us know.

I want Sara Palin to win soooooooo much.

Yipes! The hamsters got their revenge. Spell check isn't doing anything!

I keep my perfect record. I did not watch.

287 avspatti  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 8:01:26pm

Biden's eyes look strange to me. Don't know exactly what it is.

288 sparrowlake  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 8:01:30pm

I missed the debate except for the last few minutes. Palin's closing statement was much better than Biden's.
Now I'll be staying up half the night to watch a replay - I hope it'll be worthwhile.

For the 1000th time,

Online polls are useless. Please consider that most conservatives walked away from CNN ages ago, so that tells you what their audience thinks.

Same with the drudge poll. It means nothing.

re: #289 astronmr20

That was a joke considering I previously posted that I voted twice on drudge. I was raised in Chicago. I get it.

291 pittrader1988  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 8:04:07pm

Biden has hair implants, and he has had his eyes done.

292 sleepyone  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 8:04:12pm

Palin did fine. Nothing spectacular, nothing dismal. I'm not disappointed nor am I changing my vote or staying home like some defeatists have been spouting.

Regarding those that say she sounded unsure of herself at times: I do think it's probably difficult to sound convincing repeating the talking points and platform of the top of your ticket when you may disagree with some of it.

I'll even say that Biden did fine with his audience. I don't buy a word that comes out of his mouth but his base will not be disappointed.

Frankly I don't know if this debate will help sway the so-called swing voters in either direction, if such voters even exist.

293 apocolypse yesterday  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 8:20:02pm

Both CNN and MSNBC had poll results (not online) that Biden won.

Sure, keep telling yourself that Biden won.

re: #262 OldLineTexan

Yep, but tfk knew that already.

It has been decided since McCain won the Repub nomination that the border, the crime, the drugs, and the railroaded LEOs are non-issues.

All these problems are big-time national security issues, to my way of thinking. If a country doesn't control its borders and support those who wear its uniform in harm's way guarding its borders, its national security is in trouble.

So I'm being a bit optimistic I know, but I still have my fingers crossed: I think once McCain/Palin are in office, they will figure things out fast. No borders, no security. Same thing, I'm hoping, for the whole illegal immigration problem-- we have to get a lot tougher or we're looking at becoming a third-world country before we know it.

McCain/Palin (R) and good congresscritters like Tancredo (R) are our only chance. Forget the (D)'s, that's a disastrous report card grade, national security-wise in particular.

295 yesandno  Thu, Oct 2, 2008 8:28:47pm

In the long run, Biden had to defend his record. Palin had to defend John McCain's. And that made her job all the more difficult. She did very well doing just that...and being honest about the fact that there are differences between McCain and her.

Grown up behavior and we so desperately need grown ups these days.

These "undecided" voters have to be the most ... well, if any of them are lurking, I don't want to insult them too much.

BUT FOR GOD'S SAKE, OBAMA IS A F*CKING COMMIE!

DU and Kos link to every single poll, telling their members to vote.

That's why these online polls are so worthless.
