Biden Doesn't Know the Difference Between Gaza and the West Bank

Politics | Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 10:03:46 pm PDT

Another absurdly wrong statement from Joe “Foreign Policy Expert” Biden, who very obviously does not know the difference between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank:

Here’s what the president said when we said no. He insisted on elections on the West Bank, when I said, and others said, and Barack Obama said, “Big mistake. Hamas will win. You’ll legitimize them.” What happened? Hamas won.

I'm a catholic- not a particularly devout or observant catholic- but I do in fact know the difference between the Gaza and West Bank simply because Jesus' birthplace is located along the West Bank.

And call me bigoted or what have you, but I would rather have the Israelis as custodians of the Church of the Nativity than the Paleo-stinians who were celebrating and passing out sweets on Sept. 11th, 2001.

That in my opinion is the REAL change we need in DC, Someone who hasnt been corrupted by the DC crew, McCain is a maverick so to speak because he goes against the flow on some things. Biden and Obama have been in the political realm and are used to the strong arm tactics of the DEMORAT party.
Sarah Palin is about as far away from DC as you can get, and she is a people person.. I am voting for John McCain/Sarah Palin but the truth is I am voting for Sarah Palin.

CALL TO ACTION! "FREEPING FOR JESUS": THE VP DEBATE

I fully expect "Mighty Joe" Biden to crush Sarah "I-Shot-Bullwinkle" Palin like a grape. One thing I will not take for granted, however, is the industriousness of the right-wing spin machine. They will be out in full force tonight attempting to alter reality and voter opinion. This is our opportunity to help counter Repug spin, engage in a little psychological warfare and perhaps even influence a voter or two, if we're very lucky.
....
Vote early and vote often! You can vote multiple times on many of these polls by using different browsers (IE then Firefox, etc.) by deleting cookies from the poll site or just by voting over and over again.

Freep the debate threads! This idea from m16eib: Hit the debate threads on blogs and message boards and tell them how Joe Biden rocked the debate and how Sarah Palin left America with a big, steaming pile of moose poo. Many of these sites have discussions DURING the debate as well as after, so you can hit some of them early and lay some demoralizing verbiage on our opponents.

Obama Was For Palestinian Elections Before He Was Against Them

FLIP-FLOP #4: Obama Now Claims That He Opposed Palestinian Elections In 2006, But He Supported Them At That Time:

Obama Says That He Opposed Palestinian Elections In 2006. Obama: "There is no room at the negotiating table for terrorist organizations. That is why I opposed holding elections in 2006 with Hamas on the ballot. The Israelis and the Palestinian Authority warned us at the time against holding these elections, but this administration pressed ahead. And the result is a Gaza controlled by Hamas, with rockets raining down on Israel." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks At The Annual AIPAC Policy Conference, Arlington, VA, 6/4/08)

But During His 2006 Trip To The Middle East, Obama Met With Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas And Said The Election Represented An "Opportunity...To Consolidate Behind A Single Government." "Illinois Senator Barack Obama's journey to the Middle East took him to the West Bank Thursday for a meeting with the man elected to replace Yasser Arafat. ... For a time Thursday in the West Bank there was only the clatter of cameras as the newly elected president of the Palestinian authority, Mahmoud Abbas, met with Illinois Senator Barack Obama. At a meeting with Palestinian students Thursday, Obama said the U.S. will never recognize winning Hamas candidates unless the group renounces its fundamental mission to eliminate Israel, and Obama told ABC7 he delivered that message to the Palestinian president. 'Part of the opportunity here with this upcoming election is to consolidate behind a single government with a single authority that can then negotiate as a reliable partner with Israel,' said Obama." (Chuck Goudie, "Obama Meets With Arafat's Successor," ABC 7 News, [Link: obama.senate.gov,...] 1/12/06)

The Palestinian News Agency WAFA Reported That Obama Was Supportive Of The Palestinian Elections Being Held At Their Scheduled Time. "President Mahmoud Abbas met Thursday with the U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), in the Presidential HQ in Ramallah...President briefed the U.S. Senator about the latest developments in the Palestinian territories including the preparations for the legislative elections.... Abbas and Obama discussed the means of underpinning the American-Palestinian economic relations...Obama asserted the US supports and eager that the Palestinian legislative elections on its proposed time (January 25)."

Biden: Here’s what the president said when we said no. He insisted on elections on the West Bank, when I said, and others said, and Barack Obama said, “Big mistake. Hamas will win. You’ll legitimize them.” What happened? Hamas won.

When he says "ON the West Bank," he speaks as if he's talking about the west bank of a river. Judea and Samaria extend 25 miles towards the west (and they go up thousands of feet.) Some river bank.

This area has this name because the Arabs had nothing else to call it. The land has never been in their history so they've never had a mental image of this land as being anything other than its geographical position near a river (and even this is an invention only several decades old.)

"West Bank" says nothing about anyone. It would be like calling a town "Rock Next to a Tree" or "20 Foot Ditch." It isn't even an affectionate name for a supposedly much loved landscape.

No one calls him/herself a "West Bankian." There are still Samaritans, though. "Good Samaritan" is a term in use today. No "Good West Bankians," though.

Biden thinks he knows the Middle East, but he's as clueless as Jimmy Carter.

I think Sarah rocked tonight. But to be fair, Biden is also an excellent debater. I think both Biden and Sarah are better debaters than Obama or McCain.

But to the subject of this post, when the elections were held, they were held in both West Bank and Gaza. So I guess to be 100% accurate, Biden should have said the "Palastinean territories" or, as most Israelis would say, "Judea and Sumaria." (Not sure about the spelling.)

So not a big gaffe. Even my grandma knows the difference between the West Bank and Gaza, so I'm sure Biden does as well.

No matter. Obama is still likely to win, but Palin just made herself a credible candidate for 2012.

Example. At least try to get your facts straight.

True, Hamas' victory was sweeping. However, they carried 5/11 districts on the West Bank, compared to 4/5 districts in Gaza.

Hamas isn't considered by and large to have political legitimacy in the WB at all. They have mayors there and they cause a lot of trouble, but citizens of the West Bank, even in Ramallah and Hebron, begrudgingly accept Fatah's rule there.

Hamas won the election by a landslide, it's true. But it won that election in Gaza, it established its powerbase in Gaza, it has been headquartered in Gaza for a good, long time and it is now in control of, you guessed it, Gaza - not the West Bank.

There's nothing scary about a U.S. President and Vice President talking about the "two state solution" in general (since it's not going to happen.) The Arabs will never accept any sort of deal that doesn't come with an end to Israel's existence. They've never wanted a state in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza. They only want Israel gone.

No worse than Obama/Biden, but no better.

Obama is a million times scarier on the subject of Israel because he has advisors who belong to the "Let's just knock some heads together for their own good" Middle East policy (which can be translated as: "Let's force Israel to do things that would get thousands or hundreds of thousands of Jews killed [G-d forbid] because we know better than Israel what it takes to make peace.")

Obama would try to force suicidal moves on Israel whereas McCain/Palin will not.

This is a huge difference.

Of course Biden knows where the West Bank is, it's where FDR spoke on television in 1929. Right?

Or it's on the other side of the East Bank, just off Wall Street.

I got that too, when I clicked the green "vote" button. But it worked when I clicked the picture of the candidate (Palin imho). :)

It's not adjacent to the Left Bank in Paris?

Biden's ignorance on nuclear matters is a bit astonishing considering his 35+ years as a Senator. His assertion that Pakistan has missiles capable of hitting Israel vastly overstates the case. Pakistan has tested IRBM's in the 2000 km range with an operational cruise missile in the 220 km range. Distance between the two countries is about 3000 km.

I know the difference between the West Bank and Gaza, and I didn't need 35 years in the Senate either. Perhaps I'm qualified to be Vice President?

Lady, I would voter for you or Mandymatters in a flash.

No, because that would be opposite the Right Bank...and there is nothing "Right" in Europe.

Ah! It finally worked! Yay. So far 52% Biden, 47.3% Palin, 0.7% neither.

I am voting for John McCain/Sarah Palin but the truth is I am voting for Sarah Palin.

you are not alone in that feeling. my vote was a foregone conclusion, but the only reason i won't be holding my nose in November is because i'm voting for her.

Palin should have mentioned that Hamas endorsed Obama. Ahmed Yousef, prime minister of Hamas endorsed Obama in an interview on WABC radio, in April.
