Biden Lied About Obama Not Supporting Hamas Election

Politics | Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 8:58:46 am PDT

That’s right—not only did Biden confuse the West Bank and Gaza, he blatantly lied when he said that Barack Obama did not support the Palestinian elections that put Hamas in control of Gaza.

During His 2006 Trip To The Middle East, Obama Met With Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas And Said The Election Represented An “Opportunity...To Consolidate Behind A Single Government.” “Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s journey to the Middle East took him to the West Bank Thursday for a meeting with the man elected to replace Yasser Arafat. ... For a time Thursday in the West Bank there was only the clatter of cameras as the newly elected president of the Palestinian authority, Mahmoud Abbas, met with Illinois Senator Barack Obama. At a meeting with Palestinian students Thursday, Obama said the U.S. will never recognize winning Hamas candidates unless the group renounces its fundamental mission to eliminate Israel, and Obama told ABC7 he delivered that message to the Palestinian president. ‘Part of the opportunity here with this upcoming election is to consolidate behind a single government with a single authority that can then negotiate as a reliable partner with Israel,’ said Obama.” (Chuck Goudie, “Obama Meets With Arafat’s Successor,” ABC 7 News, http://obama.senate.gov, 1/12/06)

The Palestinian News Agency WAFA Reported That Obama Was Supportive Of The Palestinian Elections Being Held At Their Scheduled Time. “President Mahmoud Abbas met Thursday with the U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), in the Presidential HQ in Ramallah...President briefed the U.S. Senator about the latest developments in the Palestinian territories including the preparations for the legislative elections.... Abbas and Obama discussed the means of underpinning the American-Palestinian economic relations...Obama asserted the US supports and eager that the Palestinian legislative elections on its proposed time (January 25).”

7 Honorary Yooper  Fri, Oct 3, 2008 9:01:32am

Senator "Commie" Joe Biden was really full of lies and half-truths last night during the debate. However, I thought he was going to burst a blood vessel in his forehead at one point in the latter half of the debate. Most of his debate talk during that time was given in a low growl rather than just a talk.

Biden's 14 other lies.
[Link: ace.mu.nu...]

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people's health insurance coverage -- they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska -- she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it's not a windfall profits tax.

9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation -- he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won't pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

Biden lost not due to what he said, but due to his body language. Biden was losing his cool several times during the debate. He almost popped a blood vessel at one point. His face was very red during the second half of the debate. He kept slurring his words as the debate went on. And as for how Biden spoke, he was growling in the last 20 minutes. Sure. Knew his stuff? I think it has already been pointed out here this morning that he DOESN'T know his stuff. And this is only the start. I have seen fact checkers that have over 20 problems with his facts. Maybe you should wait a while and research this a little more before you go shooting off you mouth.

Unfortunately, the perception is the reality, and the vast majority of the viewing public does NOT know Obama's voting record, McCains, the exact details of their tax plans, where Gaza is, what Hizb'allah is, etc.

This what absolutely infuriated me. Biden was forcefully spouting hot air, and Palin was letting him get away with it again and again.

I agree. She did well, which was a victory. But to say she won might be a stretch. Biden came off as a bit weary, etc, but he knew his stuff.

What is the criteria for winning a debate? Considering the list of factual inconsistencies being exposed by Biden, does he lose points (however points are counted)? Does he get a penalty for outright lies (Obama, Hamas election)? How about Palin's score? Do you only get credit if you answer, whether it is factual incorrect or a lie? And you lose I guess if you don't lie about a topic?

How are debates scored nowadays? Is it like ice skating? Stack the judges in your favor?

re: #55 Cognito
Well, that may be true in a strict debate context, but as JFK proved in his debates with Nixon, he spoke "directly" to the American People, rather than debate Nixon's policy points.
And as for Biden's grasp of foreign policy issues, given that he's spent 35 years in the Senate, and for most of that time on the Senate Foreign Relations Committe, he made a number of errors and mistatements which you know a Republican would've been excorciated for making.
Palin's best line of the evening (out of several) was: "I'm glad to be able to speak directly to the American People without the filtering of the MSM" - or words to that effect.
Let's face it, the MSM HAD to conclude that Biden won the debate or risk making Charlie and Katie look like the ratbastids they are.

Reminded by Tim Russert on Russert's Saturday night CNBC show, about how Vice President Cheney predicted U.S. troops would be welcomed as “liberators” by the Iraqi people, New York Times Iraq reporter John Burns corrected Russert's presumption that Cheney was misguided: “The American troops were greeted as liberators. We saw it. It lasted very briefly, it was exhausted quickly by the looting.” Burns added: “I think that the instincts that led to much that went wrong were good American instincts: the desire not to have too heavy of a footprint, the desire to empower Iraqis.”

1.) "Sleazy" Joe, if Barrack Obama was president (IBOWP), Saddam Hussein would still be "leading" Iraq, threatening the Middle East and killing his own people.

2.) (IBOWP) Libya would still be in the final stages of their nuclear program.

3.) (IBOWP) Syria, most likely, would still be in Lebanon, not isolated, and probably not participating in peace talks with Israel.

3a.) (IBOWP) Israel probably would not have destroyed Syria's nuclear facility by working so closely with the US Administration and Dick Cheney. Instead Obama's advisors (such as anti-Israel Jimmy Carter and his sidekick Zib) would have certainly advised against it.

4.) (IBOWP) The US would be more vulnerable to attack in the absence of the Patriot Act and our ability to filter suspected foreign phone calls.

5.) Our relationship with the conservative French government would has been repaired nicely. (Thanks to GWB)

6.) (IBOWP) Al-Queda would have free reign in Iraq.

For the first (maybe second) time I feel sympathy for you.
Yes I too think Palin won the biggest part of the entire debate: showing that she could stand up with the "big boys" in a public debate and hold her on and then some - but you seem to be judging the debate on the kind of "scoring" done at school or college debates and on that point I think you are missing the basic points being made here (and elsewhere): for Biden, the Foreign Policy Maven, to make the kinds of mistakes he made ("the country north of Israel" is one of the milder ones) and some of the outright distortions and factual inaccuracies he made, he DIDN'T "win" the debate EVEN on a standard debating type of scorecard (where points are usually deducted for inaccurate factual statements). But I regret that YOU are getting all the flak on this.

X number of questions, 90 seconds for primary response, 120 for rebuttal.

You have to pick and choose what to lead with, and what to respond with.

Palin's biggest strength was to say "tomorrow the Pundits will start analyzing and fact-checking". That process takes about 72 hours, usually, to 'complete'.

I think Palin did as well as possible given the circumstances. MSM has two choices: (a) decide the VP debate was inconsequential and ignore the fact-checking, or (b) cover for Biden/Obama.
I don't know which route they'll decide on.

I think Palin did as well as possible given the circumstances. MSM has two choices: (a) decide the VP debate was inconsequential and ignore the fact-checking, or (b) cover for Biden/Obama.
I don't know which route they'll decide on.

Haha, if we've been watching the same race I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Definitely B. Why ignore when you can just pass off obama campaign lies as news?

I liked her riffing on 'I may not answer what the moderator wants, but I'm going to speak directly to the people', or something like that. That was great.

re: #179 Occasional Reader
Spot on post and, iirc, the American Taxpayer (well, at least the government) actually made a profit on some of the RTC/FDIC dealings in the early '90's.
But I don't understand the FDIC objecting to WellsFargo taking over Wachovia instead of Citigroup, given that the WellsFargo take over requires no money from the FDIC nor does it requre that the FDIC eat a lot of the crappier loans made by Wachoivia.
It's like the FDIC is LOOKING to take a hit this time.

Nasrallah was probably driven out of Lebanon--and into Syria, in a Lincoln Town Car.

I prefer to think they had to smuggle him out in a donkey, like Vincenzo Cortino.

Yeah, I liked that A LOT. I think a closer quote would be "I appreciate the opportunity to speak directly to the American people without the filtering of the MSM".
Take that Katie!
BTW, did you catch the open mike comment made by Gwen ("what's a conflict of interest?") Ifill to Biden after the debate "You did great Joe you and Obama are right on" or words to that effect.

203 realwest  Fri, Oct 3, 2008 9:54:13am

No, I didn't watch the whole thing, but that would be GAFFETASTIC if the moderator said that.

Sorry guys, have to totally disagree on this post. This is a semantics issue at best. Everybody supported the ELECTIONS, the elections weren't necessarily a bad thing, the question is do we support the results. I wouldn't call this a lie. Biden clearly was saying Obama didn't support Hamas, not that he didn't support having open elections. How can that've been a bad thing?
Now, being willfully oblivious to the fact that the people on the ground love Hamas and hate Jews is indeed a terrible sin. But elections, regardless of their horrible outcome, were a step in the right direction.

Re: Joe Biden Lied ... Do these people even know the truth themselves any more? Or do they just make it up from day to day to suit their audience? I know, I know, dumb question.

Whoops, I was totally wrong, I didn't read the transcript and gave Biden the benefit of the doubt. I'm an idiot. He was wrong and he lied big time.

The only error I could see for Gov Palin was calling the Afghanistan Commander McClellan (who was Lincoln's Civil War General before U.S. Grant). A minor error compared to Sen. Gaffetastic's plethora of errors. Gov. Palin skewered Biden and did it with a smile. She is unique in federal politics a national treasure. I've seen so many dour faces in NYC on dems after this debate, there is no plausible possibility that Biden came close to winning. I even heard Andy Sullivan's faint screaming (like the sound of a horcrux that's been magically killed) after the debate. The repubs also see that this was a clear win for Palin. The troops are ready to go, and are only waiting for McCain to put in an equally stellar performance and bring a gun not a popsicle to his remaining debates.
