Politics | Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:43:58 pm PDT

Sarah Palin differs with John McCain on abandoning Michigan to the Democrats; she wants to get out there and keep trying.

So is there a little disinformation being spread by McCain's campaign, or is he sending Palin out for extra maverick points?

Sarah to McCain: "Well, John, do I have to drag you into the White House?"

10 lawhawk  Fri, Oct 3, 2008 12:49:57pm

The Pros of staying in MI: keeps Obama bogged down on trying to hold a state that should be a D leaner.

The Cons: Spending money on a state that has gone D the last two Presidential cycles and where it doesn't seem likely that McCain will break through.

The pros of leaving MI: spend the money and time where it will do the most good.

The cons of leaving MI: disspirited GOPers wondering where things went wrong.

I think it's an uphill battle to take MI, but the way they announced the pullout was bad - the timing especially.

Palin needs to really get out there, and do unto OH and PA that she wants to do in MI. They have similar demographics and polling suggests a far closer race there. Take those two, and Obama has a huge uphill battle. Palin could certainly connect there - and she's got to go to town after town all over the heartland to get out the vote and improve the outlook among the rank and file who are out of sorts. McCain has to get his game face on and really hit 'em hard. He needs to get angry - and start laying into the Democrats and their fecklessness over the whole bailout and the events that led up to it.

Since every Democrate is running against President Bush this fall, McCain-Palin should run against the Michigan Democratic leadership in that state.

Contrast their policies with Democratic ideas...the high taxes, over regulation, etc.

Methinks the pols got that one dead wrong. All they have succeeded in doing is postponing the hang-over.

Sarah should be hitting all the swing states that are culturally sympathetic toward her: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and all the old northwest. I guarantee she'll close the gap there and maybe even flip a few states.

43 Sunlight  Fri, Oct 3, 2008 1:01:31pm

Sort of OT: I was thrilled this morning. Sarah Palin did a really great job last night in the debate. My high school age daughter, whom I've been training to see how the press is acting as a marketing department for the Dem party, sat down to start her breakfast. She looked at the front page of our local paper and said, "Wow. This paper is really for the democrats, aren't they?" Then she proceeded to start reading out loud snippets (including the headline and first line of the first story on the front page) that she felt sounded like Dem marketing literature. We are a blue state (especially in the public schools) surrounded by a sea of red states, so I'm working to make sure they see this bias (it's actually beyond bias and the Dems should have to report it as in-kind donations) in these breakfast table "news"papers. I'm about to introduce her to lgf, powerline, instapundit, pjmedia, etc. She'll at least be able to spot it before she leave home! She's a good writer; maybe she could be a teen correspondent for pj or something.

44 Ben Hur  Fri, Oct 3, 2008 1:01:32pm

Hizballah is a much better community organizer than both Barry and McCain.

And they're pulling for Barry.

No brainer.

45 opnion  Fri, Oct 3, 2008 1:01:35pm

Sarah palin is a piece of work. She has been villafied in the most outrageous & gutteral ways. Yet she is enthusiastic, positive & ready to take the fight to the enemy.
McCain needs a wake up call. Let me torture a baseball analogy, McCain is like a starting picther getting lit up. He won't yield the mound to the closer, Sarah Palin.
She is his chance to win.

Keep Sarah and Todd in WI, MN, MI, OH and PA, with a couple of stops in the CO/NM/NV area. Have her and Mitt team up in MI, especially.

Mac should team up with Joe Lieberman and hit FL like they're planning on moving there permanently.

Where the hell are Huck and Fred? Both of them should be out there hitting the trail.

And send Mac with Rudy on a nine state tour of all the battlegrounds.

They need to get out there and hit it, HIT IT HARD!

When Barry Goldwater picked Bill Miller of New York to run as his VP everybody scratched their heads. Nobody had heard of him. Goldwater said "I like this guy because he drives Johnson crazy." Sarah does the same thing for all dems - especially the Beast. Give her to Michigan and she will devour their resources. Everywhere she goes she will draw a crowd. Every hand she shakes will be a vote in our column. Perhaps Sarah is our October Surprise.

59 Beasterman  Fri, Oct 3, 2008 1:03:49pm

Ours in MN went from about $3,200 to $5,500/year (ouch!) and we jumped the appraiser (almost literally) and he dropped the valuation some. In fact, many DEMs belong to the "I got mine & I'm going to see to it no one else does" club. What is striking is the clever way they fool the poorer. Look, we raised taxes on the super rich that in fact no rich guy actually pays. He hires clever tax lawyers & accountants to see that he does not.
What bugs me is how their constituents keep buying into it.

98 DeafDog  Fri, Oct 3, 2008 1:12:20pm

I posted this on a previous thread, but I think it's also relevant here....

My favorite moment in yesteday's debate was when she talked to the people telling them not to let this happen to them again. For those caught up in the real estate credit frenzy, she was making the classic self-reliance argument without being belittling. She wants to help you help yourself, and not promising that she could solve your problems for you. It was brilliant!

I know BHO promises to solve everyone's problems for them, and for some people they do not want to hear anything else. But if there are any reachable people in the audience, she reached them.

The Michigan economy has been underperforming for years. Why? Well, there are many reasons, but at least part of the issue are govt. programs that promote government reliance. Letting Palin try to reach those folks may work...maybe I'm just dreaming, but it's a happy dream so leave me be.

You're right on all counts. He's looking to impose some form of toll or tax for people coming into Manhattan (son of congestion pricing) to pay for transit upkeep; MTA considers yet more fare hikes; property tax breaks are going off the table and hikes are considered; and a commuter tax is being proposed (anyone from outside NYC that works in NYC would be taxed).

At a time when Wall Street is looking for reasons to cut costs, he's going to send companies elsewhere - like into Jersey City or out of existence altogether.

And don't get me started on Bloomberg and term limits. /wouldn't want to see me go on a rant.

The non-binding resolution on “Combating the Defamation of Religion” is intended to curtail speech that offends religion -- particularly Islam.

Pakistan and the Organization of the Islamic Conference introduced the measure to the U.N. Human Rights Council in 1999. It was amended to include religions other than Islam, and it has passed every year since.

In 2005, Yemen successfully brought a similar resolution before the General Assembly. Now the 192-nation Assembly is set to vote on it again.

Now that the bailout bill is a done deal (for good or ill), Mac can take a few days for debate prep before the Townhall in Nashville next Tuesday. Considering the fact that he had no real prep time for the first one, he came out with a tie, and half the debate was about economics.

While Obama had a couple days prep time in FL prior to having his lazy ass hauled into Washington by the Pres, he still couldn't come out ahead in a subject that is supposed to be a dem winner.

And town halls are McCain's home court, while Obama stumbles like a fool.

where can I find a good demographic breakdown on Michigan population?...I know obama will take detroit and dearbornistan, ann arbor...but I got to think future VP Palin will play real well out of the main population areas and the Upper Peninsula, do the populations of the areas I mention out weigh the rest of population of the state? I know Detroit metro has got to be a couple of million people? or am I wrong?

Well, the city of Detroit itself is mostly Black, and Dearborn has some Arabs, but they are a minority, and and even smaller minority of them are muslims. They're vocal, but small. Oakland County is mostly white collar, middle and upper middle class with pockets of blue collar. Macomb County is mostly blue collar with some white collar. Livonia and Downriver is similar to Macomb County.

Leaving the Detroit area, you have Ann Arbor, which is full of Democrats. Lansing is a mix, even with Michigan State next door. Grand Rapids is rather conservative, and religious (Palin would be a major hit here), as well as the west coast from St Joseph to Luddington. Flint has a lot of blue collar union folks (UAW mostly). The Tri-Cities (Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland) are more removed from Detroit and Flint, and have a more conservative population. Up North is more conservative, and they have a bunch of hunters who would hate BHO taking away their guns.

Crossing the Straits of Mackinac, the eastern Upper Peninsula is mostly rural with some blue collar folks in Sault Ste Marie. The western Upper Peninsula is also rural with a mix of blue and white collar folks in Marquette and Houghton. Even though both have sizable universities, they aren't exactly bastions of liberalism, especially Houghton.

I'd give Governor Palin a better than equal chance of getting the base in the state out to vote and making it at least cloase, if not winning the state. Remember, Michigan went for Reagan in 80 and 84, and GHW Bush in 88. They also had a pretty popular Republican governor before Granholm. Engler won three terms as governor before he had to step down due to term limits.

That memo should be used to beat Obama's head in in Colorado, yet thats the last we'll hear of it. Damn! If a competent person was running the campaign, instead of the "Bob Dole Crew" nothing would go unused. Why do we get a pistol like Sarah Palin, and then waste every opportunity to put Obama away. What they are in fact chanting is "Omega, Alpha", to signify and end to the "old" way of doing things (the way this country has traditionally been governed) and the beginning of a "new" way of doing things (Obama's socialist vision for the future direction of this country).

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

So now we all see the difference between a senator and governor - a governor fights ahead and wants to lead, a senator wants to concede, and collaborate.

Were those McCain's words? Fight with me? I willing to fight but not if he hires Andrew Cuomo and Al Gore to advise him.

John, may I call you JOhn? Now is NOT the time to collaborate!

I think Governor Palin could do extremely well in Michigan.
As pointed out, they have had popular GOP governors.

Not the least being Mitt Romney's father.

I don't think it is a "lost cause" at all.

That is no improvement. It is a chant of, by, and for revolutionary shock troops--for whom Obama is the Leader.

Exactly my point. Thank you for clarifying it better than I had.

In fact, I think the implications of "Omega, Alpha" are far worse than those of "Alpha, Omega".

Then you have to factor in the fact that Obama is a Chicago politician. That does not fly well in most of the state, let alone most of the Midwest outside Cook County.

I think that may be some of the resistance to Obama in Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

They're arming up for a fight now. CitiGroup v. Wells Fargo.

CitiGroup Lawyers are streaming from the ramparts, screaming battle cries of "Violation of Exclusivity, Terminate and Don't Proceed, and Tortious Interference."

Wells Fargo, under command of Chairman Richard Kovacevich, has lined up their shield wall, bristling with pikes and axes, and is prepared to receive the charge, chanting "$7 a share, Solid Deal!"

This could be interesting.

None at all for blocks. Maybe a couple here or there on the side of the road (where they aren't supposed to be placed). Four years ago there were Kerry/Edward signs all over the place. I can't say I understand the tactic of announcing you're pulling out of a state. At a bare minimum, keep your mouth shut and let your opponent continue to waste dollars there.

It also sends an unpleasant message to loyalists in that state: "Sorry, but we're not interested in your support."

And what does it say about how you will conduct yourself once in office? "Israel? Well, that's a lost cause; none of our allies are offering any support, so let's just bail and hope we do better somewhere else."

I just don't see how this is a good plan.

Ah, ok, thank you for clarifying. If you watch the very beginning, at the point where the Obama Youth stop and stand in a line, as they chant the one at the head of the line stops chanting, then the next stops, then the next, and so on.

When it is only the last guy in line you can hear him say "Omega, Alpha". You may have to turn the volume up because the last guy is not very loud, but the chant clearly ends on "Alpha" not "Omega".

Also, I read the text part of the original YouTube video before it was taken down. The text said that the chant was "Omega, Alpha", intended to signify an end to the "old way" of doing things and the beginning of a "new (read: Obama's) way" of doing things.

Hope that helps.

Listen closely to the clip. They all end on "Alpha" when they stop chanting. We hear "Omega" first because we are trained to listen for "Alpha" and then "Omega". These kids are saying exactly the opposite.

It still a creepy video with some very fascist undertones.

Not in the least bit comforting. The Nation of Islam built itself on recruiting gangbangers from prison, and the streets. That is the basis of its paramilitary "Fruit of Islam" bodyguards.

The thought of an Obama civilian "compulsory volunteer service corps" with somewhat more military discipline molding the same raw material in the service of furthering his domestic policies is...not comforting.

In the context of the video "Omega, Alpha" is most certainly not a reference to Jesus in any way, shape, or form. Palin is simply not qualified for national office. Should the need arise, she doesn't have the stuff, at least at this point in time, to run the country. She may be quick and tough -- I don't think so, but others in the Lizard community think so -- but she simply hasn't been steeped in the issues long enough, and I seriously doubt her ability to become so.

By putting her on the ticket over vastly more qualified men and women alike, McCain acted irresponsibly, and, in my view (as with his positions on coercive interogation and Guantanomo, to name a few) has put our country at risk.

I'm not an Obama/Biden supporter, but an experienced Democrat ticket may be better than a ticket where the top guy is unpredictable (war with Russia over Ossetia anyone?) and the next in line is too unaware to know that she's out of her league.

Dirty Harry said it best when he said: "A [woman] has to know [her] limitations." Palin doesn't know hers.

They can say all day long that it means something different or they've reversed it to mean what they want it to mean, but the fact that he would use something that is a religious reference underscores my point. He could've used Latin as he did on his faux presidential seal. Or even better, German, since he's rallying Obama Youth. If there weren't so many other religious inferences in his campaign I'd probably let this go.

Biggest load of bull I've seen in a long time. Thanks for the good laugh.

#228 Slumbering Behemoth

They can say all day long that it means something different or they've reversed it to mean what they want it to mean, but the fact that he would use something that is a religious reference underscores my point. He could've used Latin as he did on his faux presidential seal. Or even better, German, since he's rallying Obama Youth. If there weren't so many other religious inferences in his campaign I'd probably let this go.

But they (not "he") used Greek, as many fraternal orders do. Sorry, but it is not a religious reference. It is a reference to the Greek alphabet.

Omega: the end of the Greek alphabet, the end of the America we know.
Alpha: the beginning of the Greek alphabet, the beginning of a New (Socialist?) America under Obama.

QUESTION OF THE DAY. CAN WE STAND FOUR YEARS OF OBAMA JUST TO FINALLY GET RID OF MCCAIN, ONCE AND FOR ALL, AND LET SARAH RUN IN 2012 TO BEAT THE PANTS OFF OBAMA AFTER HE SHOWS HIS TRUE COLORS? This is something I'm really pondering. On one hand it scrares me to death because I'm really afraid of what Obama will do to this country but on the other...maybe its just what we need in order get our country back on even keel...an internal cold-civil war of sorts. McCain has done some really dumb things and even though I know he's a good man and patriot, something just doesn't set well with me. On the other hand, Sarah has more in her than 10 John McCains and it's not because she's goodlooking. I could close my eyes and listen to her and the sound of her voice and the words behind them are much prettier than the rest of her. McCain has brought a world of hurt upon conservatives in general and Republicans in particular. This is NOT a time to compromise but there is no way in hell John's going to change his ways. I tempted to say don't vote for him and be done with it. Then, I get scared again. This has got to be the most fucked up election I've ever seen in the 32 years I've been voting.

re: #193 Sharmuta

I live right next to a University (liberal, of course) in a very liberal town in Arizona and I am pleasantly mystified that there are very few Obama bumper stickers or lawn signs...it's weird! There are even less McCain stickers, but that was to be expected. Did see one NOBAMA bumper sticker!

We may just find out in 30+ days.

Now consider this. Obama's Supreme Court judge picks. Those folks last a lot longer than 4 years. Does that help the McCain pill go down a little easier for ya?

Don't give up on Michigan! Sarah's husband and a whole team of his buddies should go and actively campaign all over that state. Those down-to-earth guys would connect with the people of that state who are also at heart salt-of-the-earth folks.

Don't give up anywhere, and dig into your pockets to help our side win this election! It's the most important one I can remember.

Clinton carried Michigan twice, Gore and Kerry carried it too. Hell, Dukakis was less than 300K votes from carrying the state. I understand wanting to play in every traditional swing state, but as much as I think McCain shouldn't have been as overt about it, how can you reasonably expect him to piss away money in a state he probably can't win?

When she's done with Michigan, send her to Caulifornia!
Isn’t it nice to see someone that can, “get it done?”
I wonder if Sarah has a sister that is available? *sigh*
