Palin Dissenter Backpedals

Opinion | Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 4:03:08 pm PDT

Following Sarah Palin’s debate performance, Kathleen Parker has crow for dinner: Bridge to Somewhere.

What did they do with the other Sarah Palin?

I mean the one who bases foreign-policy experience on the proximity of Russia to Alaska and who speaks cutely about Vladimir Putin poking his little head into American airspace. Where did they put her?

The Palin who performed so miserably in one-on-one media interviews was nowhere to be seen during Thursday night’s debate with Joe Biden. Instead, the affable, tough, determined pit-bull-hockey mom presented to the GOP convention was back with a jaw-jutting, happy-warrior vengeance.

So, yes, I am relieved. I had been concerned that she would stumble badly and humiliate herself. No fair-minded person wanted that. In fact, she managed to control the debate in many respects by bridging from the question asked to the talking point she wanted to hammer.

Sarah was wonderful and the blowhard was blowhardier than usual.

7 solomonpanting  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 4:07:50pm
She was often too cute by half — winking and gosh-darning her way through the debate — but she did what she needed to do. Among other things, she declared a populist war of Us vs. Them — everyday, honest, hardworking Americans against Wall Street, greed, corrupt politicians, liberals, and, of course, the media.

How could someone like Parker not see that the media's portrayal and betrayal of Palin cast her in an unfavorable light? During the debate everyone was privvy to all of Palin's comments, not just those cherry-picked by one news source.

What? Afraid? Of what, you twit?! Somebody gonna ask her (the iPodder, of course), to suck up some responsibility perhaps instead of the Double Mocha DeCaf Grande?

She did better than most people figured she would. And let me say thanks to the ObamaMedia for drawing so much negative attention to her. You really piqued the nation's curiosity so 70 million people were drawn to that debate and watched her dress Biden down several times. After only 5 weeks compared to his 36 years! Imagine what an a** kicking the dems will have gotten by the time election day rolls around if she keeps this up. America is in awe. You have their attention Sarah. Run with that ball.

41 Sharmuta  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 4:19:33pm

Yeah- many had no faith in her. They need to ask themselves why and be honest with themselves. Blaming her performance with Couric & Gibson is a cop out. I think there are a number of so-called conservatives who need to take a long, hard look in the mirror and ask themselves- just what is conservatism? Because if this party is ever going to become dominate, "mainstream" if you will, we need to leave behind the notion of blue-blood, country club elitism and realize that working class folks, and middle income Americans make just as good a conservative as the cliched rich folks. To me- that's really where a lot of Palin's friendly fire has been originating, and it not only makes me sad, but angry too.

42 CanadianBacon  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 4:19:47pm

Nice to see that she can hold her own against a real, experienced politician. You know, the type that seems to hold out his total lack of accomplishment during all his years of elected service (look, no indictments) as his prime qualification for higher office.

Given a fair interviewer, she'd probably have never have been exposed to the harassment and ridicule she's endured since her announcement.

Of course, given neutrality in the media, we'd be hearing more about Obama's odious public history and less about Palin's private life.

What I don't understand is that so many of the people who turned against Sarah on the basis of the Gibson and Couric interviews were certainly sophisticated and knowlegable enough to know about videotape editing and the "wonders" that can be done.

re: #41 Sharmuta

Speaking as a middle-of-the-roader, I think main-stream conservativism is out at this point. Has been since they nominated McCain. Face it. McCain's not a conservative in the traditional mold. There are a couple things that matter here, as far as conservatism is concerned. Putting support behind McCain means they can't push a more conservative agenda in 2012. But to let McCain fail in 2008 means we suffer the devastation of an Obama presidency for a minimum of four years. The pendulum swings. It should swing, as far as I'm concerned, but even I've become concerned that the general direction has gotten too far leftward.

So, do they sit out in protest of a MOR presidential candidate, or do they stay home, let America lurch dangerously toward socialism so they can pick up the pieces, as did Reagan in 1980?

I'd say the stakes are far too high, and conservatives love their country far too much to let that happen.

93 Catttt  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 4:35:34pm

I think where McCain fails as a conservative, Sarah picks up the slack, and that's why it's she that's getting the scorn, and not McCain. The so-called conservative beltway people are fine with McCain because he's country club even if he's less conservative. A sick Huffington Post article.

Bombing by terrorist William Ayers --- morally eqiuivalent to when John McCain dropped bombs on N. Vietnam -

Every time I think of William Ayers, I also think of John McCain, because they are of the same era, and they both believed in the efficacy of violence. According to an article in Friday's New York Times, McCain once said of Ayers, "How can you countenance someone who was engaged in bombings that could have or did kill innocent people?" He had to use that "could have or did" because no one knows if bombs Ayers built actually killed anyone -- let's say that the odds are against it. Likewise, no one knows whether the bombs John McCain dropped on North Vietnam ever killed anyone...But, of course, John McCain's defense is that he was performing his patriotic duty, and that's what William Ayers would have said, too. I remember the Vietnam War.

Depends on where you are. Here in Central OH semiautomatic Kalashnikovs, and similar rifles like the SKS, are quite common. Mainly because they, and their ammunition, are significantly cheaper than "traditional" sporting arms like Remington .308 bolt-actions (which start at around $700 +) and .30-30 Winchester lever actions (which are now hitting four figures due to collectors snapping them up).

149 lifeofthemind  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 4:51:35pm

Once again written for an old thread but I'll post here.
The pivot point is Chicago and to an extent Columbia. Frank Davis is in Chicago on the South Side during the 1930’s to 40’s, Saul Alinsky takes classes at the Unversity of Chicago and is doing Community organizing in the South Side of Chicago neighborhoods that suround the University starting in the 1930’s - 1960s, William Ayers comes from outside of Chicago and returned to the city in 1968 with the SDS, his now wife Bernadine Dohrn spent the years from 1961 to 1967 at the College and Law school at the University of Chicago. Are there any clear links between Alinsky and Ayers? Ayers father had connections with the wealthy and liberal trustees at both the University of Chicago, Northwestern and the Law firm that employed Sidley Austin that employed both Bernadine Dorn and Michelle Obama.

It is possible that Obama’s mother was the 14 year old girl that Frank Davis bosted of seducing. Ten to fifteen years later young Barry (as he then was) is looking up to “Uncle Frank” as a mentor. He goes straight from Columbia, where he lived only blocks from Ayers, to Chicago where he joins an Alinskyite organizing effort, then he goes to Harvard and returns to Chicago where he joins Ayers in dispensing millions of dollars in support of further radical organizing.

I guess I'd agree. What I like more and more about Palin, is that she is really Me (the growing up, working-class, fargo-living, me), and countless other people like Me, who have voted nearly their entire lives as Democrats and failed to recognize anything other than the personal satisfaction that We've voted with the "Common Man" against "Big Business, Big Oil, Tax Cuts For the Rich" and any other tired, old proletariat cliche the sociali-, er, um, liberals offer up.

And frankly, Govornor Cutie Pie reminds me of my little sister. My little sister is incredibly cute, an absolute sweetheart, exceptionally kind to everyone, and all who have met her absolutely adore her.

That is pathetic...it's worse than pathetic. In fact, it's disgusting.

According to Wiki, Ms. Smiley has a history of assinine reasoning.

Wiki

In an article for Slate shortly after Election Day 2004, she wrote:

"The election results reflect the decision of the right wing to cultivate and exploit ignorance in the citizenry...I suppose the good news is that 55 million Americans have evaded the ignorance-inducing machine. But 58 millions have not...Ignorance and bloodlust have a long tradition in the United States, especially in the red states...The error that progressives have consistently committed over the years is to underestimate the vitality of ignorance in America...The history of the last four years shows that red state types, above all, do not want to be told what to do - they prefer to be ignorant. As a result, they are virtually unteachable...Listen to what the red state citizens say about themselves, the songs they write, and the sermons they flock to. They know who they are - they are full of original sin and they have a taste for violence."

Sounds a lot like "The One" doesn't it?

Everybody is really pissed about the bailout plan congress just passed. Nearly all the house are up for re-election this November. I see the possibility of a Republican sweep of the house, and maybe the Senate. Even if the Obamination happens to win, he would be basically a lame duck through his whole presidency if this occurs. Palin made the comments about Ayers earlier today in both Colorado and at a rally in California. Is California in play?

*is confused*

I read somewhere that the conservative "silent majority" (ok, maybe not a majority, but certainly a "many") in "out-state" CA are rallying, stimulated by Palin, and while it may not be quite enough to tip CA to McCain, there is a possibility when factoring in the upset Hillary supporters.

If you go to [Link: www.realclearpolitics.com...] you will notice in the "Battleground States", CA is not an "Other state" in that category. RCP average for CA is Obama by 13%, but look at the trend. You will see McCain accelerating.

You also must discount the polls by some, as I believe Kerry was winning in the polls nationwide and even in the exit polls, but Bush won because people lied to the pollsters. My conservative wife lied to one recently here just for fun.

I would advise McCain Palin to go with four day media cycles and expose one by one the type of people that BO has hung out with. starting today with the Ayers stuff, I'd keeping hitting that and letting it play out in the media for about 4 days. Next I'd role right into Rezko for another 4 day cycle, then Wright another four days, then Khalidi, and on and on. keep BO on the defensive and stretch the stories out for weeks so the public suddenly sees the light, that there is a pattern of shady associations. of course all along you never let up on the central themes of inexperience, tax raiser, unfit to lead, dangerous on foreign policy, etc.

Likewise, no one knows whether the bombs John McCain dropped on North Vietnam ever killed anyone...But, of course, John McCain's defense is that he was performing his patriotic duty, and that's what William Ayers would have said, too.

[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

Do people like that still exist? How many times has that line of "thinking" been crushed under the weight of reason.

Lesson number one:
Killing murderers is good. It protects innocent lives.
Killing good guys is bad. It targets innocent lives.

McCain killed murderers, that was good. Ayers killed or attempted to kill innocent lives, that is evil. McCain good; Ayers evil.

I really wonder if there are some people who just can't think logically. They just can't comprehend basic truths and so you have to deal with weirdos like that who really think they are insightful people.

/yes, we Buckeyes are practical - we're also cheapskates

cheers

eon

For the very reasons that the AK-47 is used by guerrillas around the world is also the reason a lot of folks here like them so much (the semi-fire mode version). They are cheap, the ammo is cheap, they are effective and easy to fire as well as easy to maintain. They are also fun to fire. I used it off and on in the Army and they are even more fun to fire in full auto.

re: #172 Sharmuta

That's just it, Noam- real conservatism is for the little guy and gal. Many of them don't know this however because they've been so lied to by the left and msm. This is part of what makes Sarah so great, and why the left is so damned worried about her- she can break that stranglehold on a lot of people's minds, and they know it. That's why they're so terrified of her.

That is the best and most plausible explanation I have heard to date on PDS. I think you have put your finger on it.

It also helps to explain the disdain coming from the Conservative elite. The common thread there is a general mocking of 'populism'. Sarah Palin is a huge contrepointe to the status quo on any end of the political spectrum. Terrific, I haven't felt so anti-establishment since the 60's

A 10 point swing is not to be taken lightly. And if it was due to the Bradley Effect, then perhaps we can count on it again on Nov 4.

At this point, I don't think they are reliable. These markets (I play the non-money ones sometimes) tend to follow polls quite closely, and often have greater margins than the polls do. Therefore, if McCain's polls go up, expect the odds to become more even again. But they also - like Zogby, who was right in 2004 - tend to adjust closer to the election because of their sense of what's happening on the ground.

So, if in two weeks the same odds apply, then worry.

It's a stock market of sorts. Consider it like horse racing where people are betting *real money* on who wins, which makes a completely different kind of "indicator" of what is to happen. It can be manipulated, either by money to profess a result, or to trick other betters into mistakes, just like the stock market.

You know, I'm not a bad writer. I've earned a living writing letters and promotional materials for a non-profit organization for over 15 years. I've also been interested in politics for a long time. But something has always held me back from trying my hand at writing political columns. I've always known what it was, but Kathleen Parker has really helped me put my finger on it.

It's that, in the pressure of meeting deadlines and trying to say something relevant, and without all the facts at hand, I might write something stupid and have it in print and read by hundreds of thousands, helping to form opinions and reinforce existing opinions, and by the time I rush to my editor with a retraction it will be too late to prevent the worst of the damage.

I simply don't understand what is motivating conservatives to be so negative and discouraging at this stage of the game. We have to go with the ticket we've got. We have to go all out for the next 4 weeks. People and nations have faced worse odds and come out victorious. We must make up our minds that whatever we might think of McCain OR Palin, President Obama is simply not an option.

Please ... if any conservative columnists are reading this, and you feel the imp of the perverse nudging you to write a column criticizing McCain or Palin, kick it the imp the nuts and tell it to go away. You can criticize them all you want AFTER they've beaten Obama.

I think where McCain fails as a conservative, Sarah picks up the slack, and that's why it's she that's getting the scorn, and not McCain. The so-called conservative beltway people are fine with McCain because he's country club even if he's less conservative. They're less comfortable with Sarah because while she's a conservative, she's middle class. Elitism isn't just a phenomenon of the left.

357 AceR  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 5:31:16pm

I posted this on the overnight thread, but wanted to post it here where it is more appropriate. I am a first time poster at LGF...and I love this site!

I want to comment about Sarah Palin and the left's derangement on her nomination for VP. As a recovering lib (uber Democrat since 1972, recovery began in 2000), I am not surprised by the left's reaction to her. I recall when Reagan won the election, I thought the world would end because I thought Reagan would destroy all that Carter and Johnson had worked to achieve. My liberal friends and I labeled him Satan, deranged, and senile. Surprisingly, I prospered exceedingly throughout the Reagan years, and I witnessed the tearing down of the Berlin wall and the end of the Soviet Union, but I never gave him props for all he accomplished.

I also remember Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court and how I knew nothing about him, but it didn't stop me or my lib friends from bashing him unmercifully during our coffee breaks at work, because he was nominated by the "enemy". We delighted in Anita Hill's testimony and were vindicated and celebrated when his nomination was withdrawn.

With Palin, I see the very derangement that I possessed for so many years coming from the left. Hordes of reporter/investigators from the main stream media are dispatched to Alaska to dig up dirt on her. Her family is assaulted by the media's hinting at incest, and a mother/daughter coverup with the birth of her baby boy. Magazine publications vilify her and prominently make her cover page with hints about scandals. Low lifes create porn videos and naked paintings because they hate her so much and delight in the ultimate embarassment and debasement of her. And her baby who suffers with Down's is hooted at by the left as a missed opportunity for what abortion really means...elimination of a life that is not worthy...and that Sarah made the wrong "choice".

Even when she kicks Biden's butt in the debate after only 5 weeks on the national scene, she is pooh-poohed by the leftist media as an amateur and a wholly scripted automaton. Then they nod to each other and coo and purr about how Biden won the debate on substance and how Obama was so insightful to pick Biden as his running mate.

They can't fault her accomplishments---they simply diminish them by calling her the mayor of a small town and a mother of 5 who neglects her duties to her children. The hatred on the left is palpable, and I encourage anyone who is still sitting on the fence about the McCain/Palin ticket to take a fresh look at how Obama/Biden has conducted their campaign through the hate-filled main stream media.

I am ashamed that this behavior goes unchecked, and I refuse to subscribe to anymore publications that feed this kind of sickening derangement.

The left can't make her go away, except by trashing her and her family, and hoping that some of the crap they throw at her sticks on election day. I would rather have 1 Palin than a thousand Biden's; 1 McCain than a million Obama's. I thank Sen. McCain for selecting Gov. Palin.

I cringe at what will happen to this country that I love should Obama win the presidency. He will usher in many more liberal judges who will truly undo all our founding fathers worked so hard to achieve in the Constitution. And, executive novice that he is, Obama will be held captive by ultra-left "advisors" like Soros, Ayers, Johnson, and lets not forget Jeremiah Wright and those like him. He will be forced to bend to their will on every issue, whether social, financial, or security related and any hint of bi-partisanship on his part will be quickly slapped down. Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Murtha, Obey, Boxer, and the rest will be giddy with their unchecked power. And Hollywood will throw a 4-year party to celebrate their big win. Is this what America wants?

I've volunteered for the McCain/Palin ticket, and I've contributed money to their campaign --- a first for me (I am 57). I hope those who can spare some time or cash in the next few weeks can do the same. Thanks for listening.

True, but looking at the court demographics, the only almost "sure thing" for replacement in the next 4 years is Stevens. While it would be nice for him to be replaced by a conservative judge, Obama naming his replacement wouldn't change the balance of the court in the near term.

Obama's damage to the judiciary would be far more widespread by his circuit court nominations.

Yes, let's hope Scalia and Thomas take a page out of Stevens's book and hang on till there's a President of their own ideology in office. And this is why retaining as much equity in the Senate as possible is important: limit Obama's choices in judges.

Too many hard-core conservatives are waiting for the second coming of Ronald Reagan and will never quit doing so. I think Charles Krauthammer is in this category, as well as a couple others at NRO.

CK is losing my respect more and more every time he damns Sarah Palin with faint praise on Brit Hume's show. It's making him look like he's a DC elitist, albeit a conservative one.

While I don't listen to him often, Rush has won my respect by pulling himself together and strongly supporting McCain/Palin, even though he disagrees most vociferously with many of Mac's stances.

I've mentioned this several times, but I read quite a lot at the Hillary Clinton Forum, and one thread was asking why conservatives have seemingly given up on beating Obama. One poster remarked, "Why does it seem that republicans always start to eat their own in the home stretch?"

A good question, I think.

So, the battle has finally begun. McCain has recognized that the battlefield has changed. Governor Palin has been promoted to handle this war, much in the same way Petraeus was; She is a young general but she has good instincts. Attacking Obama on his associations is a strategy that was delayed too long. But, she will carry it out with ease because she has credibility. She is a proud American.

BHOis entirely vulnerable on Ayers. Time to smoke him out. Hannity is doing another installment this weekend on this subject to dovetail the "weak" piece in the Times but to support Governor Palin's comment.

Next, take on Wright, the Million an March sponsored by an anti-semite, and then let us look at BHO's book which is a play book for Socialism.

Finally, McCain has seen the light. Sarah Baracuda has been woefully underestimated - their mistake. Lets get to work.

(Lastly, I saw this You tube on the Fannie Mae associations of BHO, Governor Palin should hit that one hard).

Keep posting, Acer!

What made you see the light? Was it a gradual thing?
Any key moments?

Welcome. You know when I read that it makes me wonder why others on your former side cannot grasp your epiphany.

{pre-Boomer Marine brat}

Thank you. It was very sudden--she was fine until Thursday afternoon. I took her to the vet before 8 AM Friday morning, and the vet discovered two masses in her abdomen. The vet kept her comfortable throughout the day, and stayed opened past 4 so that my boys, my mom, and I could say goodbye.

She didn't suffer, she was unwell a very short time, and we got to say goodbye. We were very blessed.

You're tops in my book, Pre-B.

I do NOT deserve that.

Thank you, anyway.

Highwaymen said, "Stand and deliver." Are you double-dipping in rogue stereotypes?

I'd like to think, if JFK were alive today, he'd punch Barack Hussein Obama right in the nuts.

I love you Noam.

Talk about defacing a beautiful woman.

Archimedes-

Saw the picture, looked at the yellow dressed woman, would not want to associate with her unless I were her Drug Dealer, and then on an "In G-d We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" basis.
