Financial Meltdown: The End of a Bad Era

Business | Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 8:19:11 pm PDT

A great piece by Michael Malone at PJ Media: The End Of An Era.

Living out here in Silicon Valley, the heartland of American innovation, it’s hard not to be appalled by the events taking place 3,000 miles away in the seats of American finance and government - and hard not to fall back on the ‘pox on both their houses’ attitude that polls say is increasingly common among American voters.

From where I sit, the United States government has embarked on two pieces of social engineering in the last few years. One was to make oil expensive as expensive as possible to drive people to greater use of alternative energy sources - because anything less would be irresponsible and destructive to the environment. The other was to enshrine home ownership (i.e., easy-to-obtain mortgages) as a new American right - because anything less would be unequal and racist.

None of us voted on these decisions - indeed, neither was even spoken about directly, much less debated. But nevertheless, both became national policy... and both have sparked national, now international, crises. Then, once they became crises, both were blamed on ‘greedy capitalism’, instead of what they really were: legislative interference into market forces.

Fine. We’ve been through this before, and no doubt we will see similar, government-induced crises again - inevitably accompanied by Administration officials and our elected representatives pointing at everyone but themselves.

But what makes this particular economic crisis so appalling, at least from this vantage point, is the sheer scumminess, corruption, short-sightedness and general incompetence of everyone involved. At least in the business world, especially in the take-no-prisoners world of high-tech that kind of venality and ineptitude either gets you fired or kills the company; by comparison, in Washington, it puts you in charge of the recovery effort.

That's a great quote. I'd like to add a quote of my own, from my new hero Tom Coburn. Sorry for the long post.

We have a patient with cancer, and they have secondary pneumonia because of the cancer and we're going to treat the pneumonia. But we're not going to fix the cancer. We're gonna ignore the cancer. Let me tell you what the cancer is. The cancer is Congresses for years upon years have totally ignored the Constitution of the United States and taken to us areas where we have no business being. There is no way you can justify in the US Constitution that the country ought to be the source of mortgages for homeowners in this country, and yet Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac control 70% of the mortgages in this country.

If anybody in America is mad about this situation, there's only one place they need to direct their anger, and it's right in the Congress of the United States. What we're going to do is we're going to continue to treat the symptoms rather than directly go after the cause that has created the greatest financial risk and peril this country has ever seen. We're not going after the cause. The cause is get back within the bounds of the Constitution that very specifically says where we have business working and where we don't. We decided that we would ignore the wisdom of our founders and create systems that are outside the enumerated powers that were given to us because we know better, we know better. We don't know better, it is obvious.

This body continues to spend more, authorize more, and create bigger and more intrusive government, limiting the power of the great American experiment to in fact supply an increased standard of living. We're in tough times, but they're going to get tougher until the American people hold this body accountable to live within the rules set out in a very wise, a very providential way that served this country well. We ignore this book, this Constitution at our peril, we are reaping exactly what we have sown.

Ironically, the speculative run-up in the prices of homes caused by the too easy availability of loans to buy them, has made them less affordable.

Has anyone actually spoken the real reason why this happened yet? The loans weren't enough to sink the investment banks, it was their losses on the derivatives they created to bet on the bundles of loans they created to provide a way to make more money on the loans they bought.

In essence, we're paying off somebody else's bet on a on a derivative inside straight at Wall Stret Vegas.

It all would have held up quite a few years longer without the forced energy stasis. We can stay more productive and creative than the rest of the world only as a factor of the energy we use.

Once energy becomes too expensive, then it's easier to use cheap labor offshore for problems rather than intelligence and automation.

25 stevieray  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 8:32:40pm

I saw this the other day. Its good as far as it goes, but I think he is missing the big picture... but then again, so is everyone else.

This is not just a problem in the US, its an even bigger problem in Europe. If you take a step back and get a better perspective, a common theme shines through.

Politicians like to give goodies to the voters, that gets them elected. But politicians hate raising taxes to pay for those goodies, that costs them their jobs.

Sometime back in the nineties, they figured out a way to give a goodies [home ownership] to the lower classes without having to pay for it with taxes... and they thought they were clever. Not so clever now, are you?

This is just another failed social welfare program... and the era that is ending is the era of the welfare state. All welfare programs bloat up, all welfare states collapse under their own weight.

Barney Frank and his creepy lover need to be exposed, as does Dodds, Reid, Pelosi and Kennedy for their part in this insane nightmare. As for Obama, who sits on the Senate Banking Committee but has no idea what they do, he represented ACORN in a suit to force Citibank to make these questionable loans, which the bank immediately tried to pawn off as a risky traunche. Of course he was just a black face in the suit, just there to lend color. His participation amounted to say his side was not ready to proceed. Bush again will disappoint. No investigation.
We now have Biden saying that Federal Judges should be able to rewrite notes and security contracts, and this dimwit, with his ignorant running mate, expect people tp loan money on such nonsense? Incredible.

Looks like Wells Fargo can forget about buying up Wachovia

Judge tells Wachovia to negotiate only with Citi

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Citigroup Inc said on Saturday that a judge ordered Wachovia Corp to refrain from negotiating with other parties, a day after Wachovia backed out of a plan to sell its banking operations to Citigroup and instead said it was selling all its assets to Wells Fargo & Co.

Citigroup said a New York state judge granted emergency injunctive relief to extend its exclusivity agreement with Wachovia. The exclusivity agreement bars Wachovia from negotiating with other parties.

I wonder of Wachovia told Wells Fargo management about the exclusivity agreement?

Part of the problem of "pulling out of this" as you noted, is that it often takes a political drive to make it happen. Case in point, Jimmy Carter so damaged America financially and militarily that Reagan had an easy time explaining to Americans they were better off with a change.

I'm not so sure, given the MSM's covering for the failures of liberal policy that McCain can make that argument, such that he hasn't even tried thus far.

Americans don't realize, well, most of them, that even though they judge congress to have failed us miserably, the economic circumstances we now find ourselves under are completely the result of liberal policy gone bad.

Historically, Reagan had it easy when he said, "Are you better off now..."

That's a hard argument to make when the MSM hasn't reported well enough the roots of our current economic crisis.

The population of the planet increases at THREE additional people PER SECOND.

Resources for all of these people are finite and running out.

Oil, water, timber, and all the other things that allow you to sit at your computer and read this, are running out.

The arguments about capitalism and socialism are spurious.

The underlying argument is this. Who is willing to define what is necessity and what is luxury? And then who is willing to enforce it?

In the meantime, three people per second arrive and want their own necessities and luxuries.

Could it be time to reconsider your breeding habits and stop pointing fingers at other people?

No. We need to be creative and come up with an alternative to both Capitalism and Communism since both systems have major inherent weaknesses and since Capitalism, even if it doesn't collapse immediately, is not a sustainable system given the energy and population crises the world is facing.

I'm a believer that a blue print for a new economic model has already been created, even if the finer details have yet to be worked out.

PROUT is an acronym for PROgressive Utilization Theory, a socio-economic philosophy that synthesizes the physical, mental and spiritual dimensions of human nature. The goal of PROUT is to provide guidance for the evolution of a truly progressive human society.

They were greedy and STUPID. I hear of many bitter retirees of Lehman, BS, AIG, ML et al who are ashamed at the failure of their former companies.

These were companies that survived generations and are now finished.

Tell me about it. For years I had to suffer being told I didn't know what I was talking about - but I worked with subprimes and HUD in the 90's and couldn't believe what was going down and then came back to NY and couldn't believe the packages that were being peddled. I was so upset by what I saw that I even put 401(k) into treasuries and CD's against everybody's entreaties to the contrary.

Those weren't investment bankers. They were gamblers and swindlers. And the times when I tried to ask them about the business behind this stuff they couldn't answer squat.

Sorry, all, just sent a note to a friend and wanted to post it here.

So John McCain, who stands SO FIRMLY against earmark, pork-barrel spending, pushed for and then voted 'Ay' to a bill with hundreds of millions of dollars in pork spending.

Not to mention that the statement, "This crisis is caused by greed on Wall Street" is stupid and hypocritical. And yet that's the line that John McCain spews every day, right alongside his buddy, Barack.

This is why I've disliked McCain for years

This is why I opposed him in the primaries

This is why I'm pissed he is our "best foot forward" for president.

Talk about underachieving: Barack Obama, or.. the guy who isn't -- lying, cheating, terrorist, no-account, never-done-nothing -- John McCain.

113 realwest  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 9:06:12pm

Well y'all I've read the article Charles linked to and I've fairly quickly scanned this thread and all I can say is that there is more than enough blame to go around - yes the government fucked up BIG TIME long before this "bailout" bill was necessary. But Big Business and truly, incredibly greedy and STUPID investment bankers and managers and fund managers are also into this way past their hips.
While all was going well, 27-34 year old "kids" (and I'm old enough to call 'em that) were WORKING THEIR ASSES off on the derivates and bonds and in turn those of them who were successful - and there were many hundreds who were, received "pittance" salaries of $100K a year and yearly bonuses of more than a million bucks - and thier bosses got much bigger salaries and obscene bonuses, given the crap that they were selling.
And those kids and their bosses - who weren't frankly that much older, spent their money on huge homes - mansions that their parents, who'd worked hard all their lives could never have afforded - I know, I represented probably 30 or more of 'em buying those $1,000,000 homes - and this was BEFORE the truly Predatory Lenders dipped their beaks in and ultimately sent the entire scheme falling on it's face and on US, the Taxpayer.
But I also think we had NO CHOICE but to go for the bailout bill - even the overwheliming pork laden one that was passed or we would, I believe, seen a meltdown of our - indeed, the Worlds - economies.
I was sorta preaching the gospel on this as early as 2001 when I was teaching Real Estate Law - none of this crap was "new" it's just that the people who invented it thought it was new because they were so young and didn't know ANYTHING about our history.
To say I'm disgusted would be an understatement equivalent to saying "Custer had some problems with the Indians at the Little Bighorn."
And of course wherever easy money (easy, OTHER PEOPLES' MONEY) goes, politicians will follow and then ultimately lead the way.

All this to implement the democratic policies to buy off the electorate.

The whole idea behind the subprime fiasco was to make sure that the dems could continue to count on wholesale support from the lower and lower-middle class for at least the next two generations.

And I'm not saying that they've failed either.

Well said. The "Masters of the Universe" saw the pigs breakfast Congress had set up and having no education or experience to make them think of a bigger picture than that on their plasma TV they went for it. We need tough kids so we can't cut them off and if we tried and really went socialist the same bastards would become the Commisars. THen we would be worse off. Now at least the lazy losers are in government and the over achievers are on the outside. What we need to do is get rid of the crooks and fools in Congress, who are replaceable anyway, and get rid of the rules that permitted this scam to develop. De-regulation did not cause this, bad regulation did. The uptick rule however was a regulation that should never have been lifted.

re: #120 gman

PROUT Summary:

Spirituality and Progress
Human beings are on an evolutionary path toward realizing their higher consciousness. True progress is movement that leads to self-realization and spiritual qualities such as compassion and love for all beings. Material or intellectual gains do not necessarily constitute progress unless they contribute to deeper, spiritual well-being.

The progressive orientation of society is maintained by making continual adjustments in the use of physical resources and mental potentialities in accordance with spiritual and Neo-humanistic values. Human beings are encouraged to construct economic and social institutions to facilitate the attainment of our highest potentialities.

Economic Democracy
Political democracy and economic democracy are mutually inclusive. PROUT advocates economic democracy based on local economic planning, cooperatively managed businesses, local governmental control of natural resources and key industries, and socially agreed upon limits on the individual accumulation of wealth. By decentralizing the economy and making sure decision-making is in the hands of local people, we can ensure the adequate availability of food, shelter, clothing, health care and education for all.

Fascism by any other name is still fascism.

Well I've been pushing for nukes for years now - but apparently only the French, who get 70%+ of their entire nation's electrical needs filled by nuclear power, were bothering to listen.
I'm for drill here, drill now.
I'm also for ANY kind of alternative energy (that doesn't cause folks to starve) that will work. But, realistically, Solar and Wind are a way off and natural gas can only cover so much (and it's SO MUCH more expensive than clean coal, which, contrary to Senator Biden, we do have PLENTY OF).
But we NEED to get back in the Manufacturing end of business - iirc, the Financial Services sector (which covers more than banks and Wall Street) was either our number one "industry" or closing in fast on our number one industry. A purrley or nearly purely service sector "private" economy is just too subject to the whims of people who actually, you know, make things.

Individuals should have complete freedom to acquire and express their ideas, creative potential and inner aspirations. Such intellectual and spiritual freedom will strengthen the collectivity. PROUT supports the creation of a world governance system having a global bill of rights, global constitution and common penal code in order to guarantee the fundamental rights of all individuals and nations, and to settle regional and international disputes. As the global economy becomes decentralized, it will be advantageous to also have a global political system.

They want a one world government AND local control of resources. Good luck with that, fascists.

Regarding French nukes, the French are actually trying to get a loan guarantee from the Department Of Energy for a centrifuge based fuel processing plant in New Mexico. Thing is, they are competing with a US firm (USEC) for the loan guarantee. The US firm is building a centrifuge plant in Ohio, and is the only US maker of fuel for Nukes. You'd think it would be a no brainer, but guess who is Governor of New Mexico - Bill Richardson, former Secretary of Energy. I hope folks in job deprived Ohio take note of that. Adding insult to injury, the French company (Areva) is partly owned by the French government and is already highly subsidized by them. So if they give the loan to Richardson's buddies, we will be subsidizing the French government so that they can sell us nuclear fuel.

I kid you not.

On the alternative energy front, ocean power (from waves) may end up being cheaper than solar or wind. It is certainly plentiful.

re: #122 Irene NYC
Hi Irene - in the article, he says "The other was to enshrine home ownership (i.e., easy-to-obtain mortgages) as a new American right - because anything less would be unequal and racist." And that is bang spot on. Except for ONE LITTLE THING - the overwhelming majority of Americans, regardless of race or ethnicity, have always wanted a home of their own, free standing, Condo, Coop, semi-detached, you name it.
But we unintentionally made things a tad too easy for our (Baby Boomer Generation) children, who did the same to their children. Not since 1975 has any American had to FIGHT in the Armed Forces of the US in any kind of significant sized war. Or any war for that matter since we no longer have a draft. And the idea that little Johnny or Janey should perhaps help pay for college with part time or summer time jobs also sorta went the way of warfare - suddenly, Mom and Dad were looked upon as being perhaps "underachievers" themselves for not being able to pay the ever skyrocketing (and unjustifiable skyrocketing) costs of a college education. And thanks to the Billy Ayers of the world (and he had PLENTY OF HELP) our education system has slowly dropped to something of a joke.
I'm not looking to get flamed here, but just what the hell does a degree in Womans Studies prepare someone to do to actually earn a living (and Woman's Studies is only one "major" of many similar types)? So we prolonged adolescence - with kids coming home to live with Mom and Dad - cause they couldn't find work that was "suitable" for them.
Public Education, with the direct involvement of mostly leftwing teachers and administrators made being responsible for youself go out of style. That which the military draft created - among other things - a large group in one generation who learned discipline and the ability to think like and stand up as an individual and ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY for their own (and others) lives somehow got lost.
And we need to reinstitute THAT a helluva lot more than we needed this bailout bill.
And we still do cause we are on the edge of being a "Nanny State" (a precipice which a President Obama would push us over, I'm afraid).
But you know, accepting responsibitlity for your own actions is HARD TO DO. And we can't upset little Johnny and little Janey too much or else they'll lose the "self-esteem" we GAVE TO 'EM. Just a bad joke of an idea and series of ideas or philosopy.

George Soros is one of the most powerful men on earth. A New York hedge fund manager, he has amassed a personal fortune estimated at about $7.2 billion. His management company controls billions more in investor assets. Since 1979, his foundation network -- whose flagship is the Open Society Institute (OSI) -- has dispensed an estimated $5 billion to a multitude of organizations whose objectives are consistent with those of Soros. (The President of OSI and the Soros Foundation Network is Aryeh Neier, who, as Director of the socialist League for Industrial Democracy, personally created the radical group Students for a Democratic Society in 1959.) With assets of $859 million as of 2005, OSI alone donates scores of millions of dollars annually to these various groups, whose major agendas can be summarized as follows:

* promoting the view that America is institutionally an oppressive nation
* promoting the election of leftist political candidates throughout the United States

* opposing virtually all post-9/11 national security measures enacted by U.S. government, particularly the Patriot Act
* depicting American military actions as unjust, unwarranted, and immoral
* promoting open borders, mass immigration, and a watering down of current immigration laws
* promoting a dramatic expansion of social welfare programs funded by ever-escalating taxes
* promoting social welfare benefits and amnesty for illegal aliens
* defending suspected anti-American terrorists and their abetters
* financing the recruitment and training of future activist leaders of the political Left
* advocating America’s unilateral disarmament and/or a steep reduction in its military spending
* opposing the death penalty in all circumstances
* promoting socialized medicine in the United States
* promoting the tenets of radical environmentalism, whose ultimate goal, as writer Michael Berliner has explained, is “not clean air and clean water, [but] rather ... the demolition of technological/industrial civilization”
* bringing American foreign policy under the control of the United Nations
* promoting racial and ethnic preferences in academia and the business world alike

To view a list of many of the more important organizations that support these agendas and have received direct funding from Soros and his Open Society Institute in recent years, click here. (Comprehensive profiles of each are available in the "Groups" category of DiscoverTheNetworks.org.)

Top Iranian Mullah declares solidarity with Hamas.

TEHRAN (Iran): Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that Iran will stand beside the Hamas government in Gaza and that Israel is weakening and on the path to eventual destruction, state television reported.

Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters, called Hamas' Prime Minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, a “mujahed”, saying “the Iranian nation will never let you be alone.''

Khamenei said Israel “has weakened day by day. Today, officials of the Zionist regime acknowledge that they are moving towards weakness, destruction and defeat,'' according to state television.

“Definitely, the world of Islam will see that day and hope the existing generation of the Palestinian people will watch the day Palestine is at the disposal of the Palestinian people, in the hands of the landlords,'' he said at prayers marking the Islamic Eidal-Fitr holiday that ends the holy month of Ramadan.

Khamenei has predicted Israel's downfall in the past, like Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Khamenei has repeatedly called Israel a “cancerous tumor'' that need to be removed from the Middle East.

So is the "nuanced" position of Obama to meet with this guy instead of Amadinejad? What, exactly, is the difference? Perhaps his staff of 300 foreign policy advisers could work that one out.

Hey ggt! I'm actually not feeling better tonight - not feeling worse, either.
As for the feisty - well I just can't stand this entire "Nanny State" philosophy or attitude. Damn it, SOMEONE HAS TO PRODUCE - produce something of value, be it hybrid autos, alternative energy or like manufacturing something.
No one who is physically or mentally capable of working should be able to rely on the government for a living - and that includes EVERYONE - no, NO prerences for woman, Blacks, American Indian, Latino-Americans, Gays, people under 50 years of age, or any other "sub-group".
The only thing I want government - Federal or State - to do is insure a level playing field and uphold the laws of the land - after we've cleared out affirmative action and "preferances" and bullshit loans to folks who can't afford them. To hell with it, it took me 30 years after getting the equivalent of a PhD to be able to buy my first home* - now folks under 30 feel cheated if they don't own at least a 4 bedroom, 2+1/2 bath, two car garage, granite effin' countertops and stainless steel appliances. TO HELL WITH IT, MAKE THEM EARN IT.

*Fairness caveat here: I lost a ton of dough in my first divorce and an even larger amount of money went to a charity; I probably could have owned a home 10 years earlier than that without the divorce and that charity.

Mandell, stated she didn't agree with Sarah on everything, that she is a democrat, that she Mandell supported the failed Equal Rights Amendment campaign but the crowd exercised tolerance. Ms. Mandell will get a lot of angry calls from the hard left, but she embraced the moment and stood with Sarah Palin. When Palin took the mic, the people exploded. Everyone stood during her entire 30 minute address.

Thousands Flock to Carson to Hear Sarah Palin

Palin was introduced by Shelly Mandell, president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Organization for Women, who described herself as a lifelong Democrat.

In rarity for a Republican event, Mandell bragged about her efforts campaigning for the failed Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and her support for Geraldine Ferraro, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 1984.

"I know Sarah Palin cares about women's rights," Mandell said. "As vice president, she will fight for you. She cares about our children and she cares about women's lives."

Palin says it's time to 'take off the gloves'

The Republican hit the familiar topics of the economy, energy and defense, but offered a few surprises as well.

The first one came with the woman who introduced Palin, lifelong Democrat and president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization For Women, Shelly Mandell. While NOW has endorsed Democrat Barack Obama as best representing women's interests in the race, Mandell has taken a different view.

"This is what a feminist looks like," Mandell told the crowd. "Like Gov. Sarah Palin."

Palin picked up from there, saying, "We're going to shatter the highest glass ceiling in America."

Yikes. Like I said, bad move with Bros Before Hos.

You reap what you sow. I welcome the PUMAs, and will enjoy running our woman against theirs in 2012.

re: #212 nightintheruts
I don't think so. Course you need to realize that although I did serve in Vietnam, I wasn't drafted. I went cause, well, that's just what realwest men did throughout my family's history - both sides - when our nation called, we served.
But the draftees I served with VERY QUICKLY picked up on the discipline and the "gung ho" (which means "working together") essence of the military. And I was an enlisted man and because of that shared barracks, tents and foxholes with other folks who came from totally different cultures than my own - and we learned from each other and learned the value of what each other's cultural background brought to our common ground.
And again, I can't speak for the miltary today (other than the evidence is there to prove the point) but it seems to me that today's military doesn't "give" anyone self-esteem - you still HAVE TO EARN IT. You still have to EARN the respect of the other troops you serve with. And, God forbid you're in a combat situation, you HAVE to depend on other troops and they HAVE to depend on you to do your job, no matter how difficult it may be.
Kinda the reverse of a lot of what we see in society today.

Take it from me, Max Darkside, things are going to get much worse before they get better and the bail-out bill is only a screwdriver in a toolbox, not a magic pill. The Congress is saying "See, we tried to help. See, we did something", but the answer will be later, "Sorry, it didn't work out too well, but we did try...".

Housing prices continue to fall. The S&P House price index is falling with no end in sight. More and more bad loans, those Adjustable Rate Mortgages with balloons, are coming due every month. The 5 year ones, from 2003, while this balloon was still forming, are now arriving with grossly insufficient property values and limited refinance options. People are finding they owe, in the NET, $100's of thousands, that they don't have. One person we know personally is on that doorstep November 1st. They didn't even know what "balloon" meant. People with 2nd mortgages are getting letters to cough up the $ because the load to value is no longer there. Do you have a 2nd mortgage? Watch out. You may need to write a check for the balance soon. Credit limits by credit cards are being cut, which increases your charged-to-available ratio, which is hammering your credit rating which causes your credit card rates to go through the roof.

And it goes on.

Get used to eating potatoes for a while.

I love that video. that picture.
That's one of those moments that will live on in the name of freedom.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

--Thomas Jefferson, Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776

May it [the Declaration] be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all,) the Signal of arousing men to burst the chains, under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings & security of self-government. That form which we have substituted, restores the free right to the unbounded exercise of reason and freedom of opinion. All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of God. These are grounds of hope for others.

--Thomas Jefferson, letter to Roger C. Weightman, June 24, 1826, ten days before Jefferson's death on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence

And everyone knew it.
On the whole, based on my personal observation, draftees were very good troops in Vietnam and - at least at my low level infantryman's job, did as well or even better than those of us who had enlisted at about the same time period they got drafted.

I sometimes think that Naturalized Americans are more "American" than many who were born here and take that FREEDOM for granted.

Thomas Jefferson survives.
--John Adams, last words (attributed), July 4, 1826, a few hours after Jefferson's death

I agree with Adams. I certainly hope he does.

In this situation of this Assembly, groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the Contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger we had daily prayer in this room for the divine protection.- Our prayers, Sir, were heard, & they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending providence in our favor.

To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth- that God Governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings, that "except the Lord build the House they labour in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and bye word down to future ages. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing Governments by Human wisdom and leave it to chance, war and conquest.

--Benjamin Franklin, July 28, 1787, speech to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia

We have rules that have served us well for a very long time. As long as we can live within them we must. ACORN however, has signaled that they will not abide by those rules. They have thus made themselves our enemy. I'm with you, if they by fraud take this election, we will need to consider all of our options for our next move.

I spend a lot of time in S.E. Asia; Singapore, Malaysia mostly, multiple times per year. Been to Bangkok and Saigon/HMC once each only. The people are so very nice and the service is wonderful. Most of my friends over there are in KL and in the state of Sarawak on Borneo.

If Obama wins, I predict a Red State separatist movement. The Red States are for the most part the bread basket and the energy producers. If Obama abruptly brings the military home, they will disproportionately head for the Red States, and they will be pissed. It will become very obvious, very quickly, that the Blue States intend to suck the Red States dry, and then tax them for the privilege. Look at the geography and see who controls the US. It isn't Obama and the Democrats.

Let's hope that Palin gets a "Meets or Exceeds" on her performance appraisal and if so, 12 years in the White House.

313 Max Darkside  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 11:20:53pm

But then, for her sake, personally, I hope not 12 years, because it would grind her down to a nub and into a gray haired old lady.

314 Biff  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 11:23:43pm

The Democrats are recruiting foreign mercenaries to fill the Blue States a and permanently shift the balance of political power. At a point in the very near future, there will be a de facto two Americas: the politically powerful Blue America, and the resource powerful Red America. At its heart, the USA is still a confederation of states.

315 Biff  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 11:25:51pm

A voluntary confederation of states.

I work as a financial advisor and many things have crossed my desk regarding the meltdown. This is one that has not gotten any coverage but worth taking a look at. O/T just saw American Carol-very funny-not a great movie, but some really great laughs. The audiance clapped several times during the movie and at the end. I am still smiling! Much needed after a lousy week.

IF (big if) Obama/Biden win, Sarah Palin will become a giant pain in their necks. She will be seen and heard often. She is the next President one way or another.

318 Biff  Sat, Oct 4, 2008 11:30:28pm

For this not to happen, McCain needs to bury Obama this week. (Figuratively, of course.)

McCain needs to use the debate to unload on little Barry Soetero. Blast him with everything. It's the only way to get this message passed the meda editors. I just hope that McCain remembers that his concept of honor and Senate protocol should not stand in the way of a GOP victory and the defeat of the dangerous and deceitful BHO.

As bad as this mortgage debt problem is keep in mind that it is minor compared to the problem not far down the road when the boomers start to retire. Most have a couple years of savings and then they will be totally broke demanding that everyone else bail them out. This current stuff is the opening act. I feel sick.

re: #38 MrSnuggles

It is almost reasonable to believe that the left orchestrated this economic collapse in order to take power and institute socialist policies. Almost.

IIRC, the other day Rush said this is the left's "October surprise".

The left knew/knows perfectly well that McCain will be too "polite" to condemn Dodd, Schumer, et al. He had his golden opportunity in the debate w/ Obama, and let it slide by. Realistically, that was his only chance - it was the one time the MSM couldn't censor him, because they had to provide the leftist lemmings with the OBAMA debate. It was the only opportunity for McCain to speak to ALL of the voters - not just the conservative choir.

Praying, praying - that in next week's debate McCain will at last throw some gas on the fire and expose the liberal Congress and the truth of what they've been doing to our coountry and our Constitution.

327 Peterus  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 2:23:46am

Perspective from the other side of the pond: Europe is totaly screwed by psuedo-liberal social engineers from your side. Market economy got a big hit, for the faults of etatism. Media obviously distorted it lefty style and it seems to general public that that's greedy capitalism's fault in 100%. My father who is interested in politics had completely no idea where this crisis came from. Community reinvestment act? Where FM and FM came from, who created them and who sheltered them?

That's some really, really bad stuff comming down. World at risk of neo-communal policy. Left may embark on:
Employ pricy social engieenering and concentrate on cutting market out, while growing goverment involvment in social issues. If (or rather WHEN than IF) it leads to a economic crisis - blame the market.
Repeat until power of goverment is absolute.

The worst part is that I can't even see any viable counter-tactic. General population won't even trust most sincere article if it's from "right wing media", on the other hand non-right wing media won't see a problem in grinding free market to the ground, while lefty media will cheer while watchin it.
You - americans - have to do something. Uncover the fraud and punish severely those who commited it. It has to be obvious and visible in plain sight what caused the crash and who's responsible so even the most stubborn anti-makert media will be forced to publish articles on it (after all they still need "some" credibility).
If nothing happens and - even worse nothing happens and UE goes into deep recession (to spice it up, we do have business cycles ending right now, short stagnation was in store anyway) - say hello to etatistic democratic totalitarism in place of allies from western civilisation.

328 Peterus  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 2:27:47am

BTW Democrats defended themselves short while ago with "it's a crisis - we gotta act now, and leave finding guilty for later". Now USA acted (and prolly next generation will pay for this), elections are close and democrats are prone to winning it riding this issue! If this is not the time to go on offensive - when will it be?!

At least in the business world, especially in the take-no-prisoners world of high-tech that kind of venality and ineptitude either gets you fired or kills the company; by comparison, in Washington, it puts you in charge of the recovery effort.

The corrupt democrats are in charge of covering their corrupt asses -- with our money.

Could it be time to starve the beast?
What would happen if millions of Americans went to their HR reps tomorrow and filled out new W4 forms and checked the boxes to end withholding.
I am NOT saying Do Not to pay your taxes just write the check at 11:59 pm on April 15th.
End the cash flow to the United States Imperial Govt.

That to me might be the only way for the taxpayers to get their attention.
A tax revolution might be our last chance before real revolution becomes the only option.

I sent my Santa Cruz brother The Thomas Sowell article and even printed out his entire biography Harvard - Cornell - Stanford - 90 articles in professional journals.

And this is what he wrote back:

Hi Susan,

How can anyone believe any of this ?

One article you sent me said Dodd was 3rd highest

reciever of contribuitions from FannieM. This last
article
you sent said Dodd was #1 reciever.

Which is it, and does it matter ?

Wow, it's really endemic throughout the U.S. I have an acquaintance, a financial planner, no less, who replied to an e-mail suggesing he view 'Buring the House Down' and a YouTube presentation of one of one of Congressman Thaddeus McCotter's speeches opposing the bailout , with a comment that it was time to 'fix the problem' and worry about the causes later.

To quote DT OMG OMG OMG!

336 BingoBunny  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 7:28:19am

Can anyone show a single thing that caused this bailout, that this bailout ends? I haven't seen that this will do anything except send more money after the cash that has already been lost.. the low morgage rates for poor people will not only continue, but will get larger, and courts will have the power to change them so the poor have even less to pay back. But it will be paid back.. by borrowers who can afford their loans.. guess what?.. the judges Barrak appoints will also have the power to make your loans higher.. From what I read they (the courts) could if they want even go back to people who have paid their loans off and tell them to pony up some more money. I expect to see morgage loans modeled after our great income tax rates.. yep you make too much for the 2% loan.. too much for the 10% loan.. too much for the 15%.. welcome rich boy you get the 20% loan.. or we'll just tax it out of you.. either way it's ours not yours.

337 rustynail  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 7:41:20am

In my last post I mentioned a video titled 'Burning the House Down'. It was a very hard-hitting short tracing the causes of the 'housing crisis' back to their roots and naming present figures in congress and elsewhere who contributed to the debacle and have profited from it. It has been repeatedly taken off YouTube due to complaints by TimeWarner of copyright violations. Since TW is identified as a big contributor to some of the corrupt politicians, their complaints are suspect, to say the least.

That said, I believe it has been revised and reposted. Does anyone have a link to the latest version? Also, can anyone explain why the author doesn't just get rid of the material (I thinks it's just audio clips) and get on with spreading the word?

338 rustynail  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 8:49:26am

Answering my last post (am I talking to myself here?). If you go to YouTube and search for TheMouthPeace (watch spelling), it takes you to videos by the producer of 'Burning The House Down'. Here are direct links to two versions:

I evidently don't know how to properly post a link, sorry. Guess anyone interested may have to copy and paste the above two links. Worth the time.

339 Peter Verkooijen  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 9:01:59am

This article is dead-on. McCain should run on this, but he won't, so he'll lose. Welcome socialism!

340 Mosse  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 10:25:15am

Welcome socialism, indeed! See the earlier postings re: Cloward-Piven strategies from the mid-1970s: [Link: www.americanthinker.com...] The idea of "forcing political change through orchestrated crisis" is exactly what's going on. McCain HAS to take the gloves off and name ALL of this -- from Obama/Axelrod to the "revolutionary" groups on the college campuses who are intimidating students into supporting Obama, to the rampant, ongoing vote fraud. If he doesn't, we're sunk.

341 SumGi  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 10:25:58am

A good friend and long-time democrat by heritage confided in me last night that she wasn't sure she could vote for Obama because he didn't have an 'American name'. (I proceeded to provide her with a long list of other reasons not to vote for him.) I don't fault her for her ignorance since I know how busy she is with her career and large family. To her credit, she knew instinctively that he was not a good candidate. She just needed more information to convince her.

The thing that caught my attention was that she only felt comfortable admitting this to people she knew well. I had heard about this PC induced phenomena, but this is my first real experience with it. Nov 4 could be a real nasty surprise for the Dems.

We need to spread the word to everyone who will listen about the Democrats complicity in this meltdown. If we don't do it, who will?

342 Miss Molly  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 1:16:14pm

All the politicians who protected Freddie Mac and Fannie May need to be pointed out as those responsible for creating a large part of this financial mess. I am referring to Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Waters from California and of course many others. The entire country needs to know just how responsible they are for protecting all of the corruption that went on with these institutions. How much more damage do we have to take from these people?

343 nines09  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 2:17:13pm

As I stagger wildly about, I regret my inability to get them pesky words to line up properly into proper paragraphs and sum up my feelings exactly. Mr Malone, I thank you.

344 Spar Kling  Sun, Oct 5, 2008 2:19:00pm

I was really surprised at the 70% figure for the percentage of mortgages controlled by Freddie and Fannie! Then, the perpetrators of the disaster rush in pretending to be the heroes of the situation, and the media slather it over by blaming Bush and McCain, the very ones who warned Americans of the impending disaster.

Even in Russia there are people that still believe in Communism and have no end of excuses, as there would be in the U.S. should the socialists manage to drive our economy completely into to the ground. Naturally, they will say that they tried to save our economy, but the disasters in the Bush administration were simply too great to overcome!

It's their religion, and because they just *know* it must be right, they are unwilling to consider the evidence against their case.

Unfortunately, this type of stubbornness is common to all humanity and is exacerbated by listening only to those with one's own point of view and only those facts supporting one's own cause. And frankly, I'm as susceptible as you are. That's why when I debate with my socialist friends, we can never agree on the underlying facts and principles.

For example, the other day, my friendly opponent argued that the United States is the only industrialized country in the world that does not recognize the *Right* of the people to free health care. "Yeah," I argued, "That will give you a free aspirin ever year after waiting 6 hours in a line." He insisted that the Canadian health care system was one of the best in the world, much better than that in the U.S. including lower infant mortality, etc. I countered with the things I've seen written by Canadians complaining about their lack of accessible health care made them come to the U.S.

Google Canadian Health care to see what I mean. Many of the references agree that with minor exceptions in remote provinces, the Canadian system is sweetness and light; some others say that it is terrible.

So, which is it? And what hope do we have in persuading anyone that collectivist solutions are much less efficient than competitive ones?

- sk
